(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)From the string of hybrids we've seen at CNET lately, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, the Infiniti M35h, and the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, it's clear that you can do a lot more with the technology than get good mileage. Although all of thesecars get better mileage than their conventional gas engine equivalents, they also get considerably more power. Forget the mild-mannered Prius, these hybrids are exciting.Volkswagen's Touareg Hybrid makes use of a supercharged direct-injection engine and an electric motor to hit 60 mph in about 6 seconds. It also represents a new generation of Touareg, featuring a whole new cabin tech suite, with niceties such as a navigation system with 3D maps and an advanced voice command system. It is the most technically advanced Touareg to date. Read our review of the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid.

0 Vote(s)

Xperia Play: Don&39't call it a PSP.(Credit:Sony Ericsson)I bought a PSP Go a year ago. Why Because I believed the PSP could transform, become something more than it's been. Perhaps, even, achieve the promise I first felt when I held the very first PSP in my hands back in 2005. It was a magical device back then. It drew crowds, turned heads. Waiters and subway riders wanted to know what it was that I was holding, how they could buy one. My parents were fascinated. Friends wanted to hold it. A Sony portable device hasn't achieved that original PSP magic since--certainly not once theiPhone made its 2007 debut. To some degree, the circa-2005 PSP is the standard to which I wanted to hold aPlayStation Phone. Once rumors began spreading about such a device last year, I held a little hope out that the time had finally come for a gaming handheld to branch out, try new ideas. Could a portable gaming handheld climb back into relevance as a smart device, post-iPhone and Android11 must-have features for a PSP Phone (photos) I had my ideas of what I wanted in a PSP Phone. The Xperia Play, detailed in Barcelona today, just doesn't cut it. To its credit, the Xperia Play does look like a potentially excellent Android phone. In fact, an Android OS was something I hoped a PSP Phone might have. Unfortunately, the Xperia Play looks like it'll do a lousy job of being a PSP--or, a Sony NGP.Xperia Play lacks the full PSP library, not to mention the NGP's: Android-playable PlayStation games aren't the same thing, and a paltry 50 titles at launch doesn't sound promising. Existing owners of PSP content are up a creek, and will have to repurchase games. No dual-analog pads! Buttons and a physical D-pad are ok, but the real appeal of a gaming phone lies in an analog stick. The Xperia Play uses a touch-pad zone with virtual analog--in essence, no different than touch on an iPhone oriPad. This hasn't solved the control issue for hard-core gamers--instead, it's a lateral move. Weird design: The asymmetrical feel of the Xperia Play's flip-up screen doesn't resemble a PSP at all. It's not even as elegant as a PSP Go. It bothers me. Does it bother you It's an estranged cousin to the NGP: Unlike the iPhone and iPod Touch, which are practically fraternal twins, the NGP and Xperia Play have as much in common as you do to that odd relative who moved away years ago to live in the desert. Despite possibly debuting in the same calendar year, these two devices aren't synonymous, and don't share the same games. One can't substitute for the other, meaning an even more fragmented PlayStation universe.Hands on with Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (photos) Maybe one of the most bothersome parts of the Xperia Play, the one that feels like a bad harbinger of its future as a gaming handheld, is its strange name. "Xperia Play" doesn't mean much to anyone. Why not use the name PlayStation Phone Or PSPhone It feels like Sony's hiding from the association, which is bizarre--this is, after all, a gaming-oriented phone. It has a flip-up control pad instead of a keyboard. Why not make it crystal clear As part of an Xperia lineup of smartphones, the "Play" seems to take a backseat to the phone itself, and to its Android functions. The Sony NGP ended up being the new Big Idea in gaming. Meanwhile, the Xperia Play stands off to the side, a secondary story to the NGP's next-gen graphics and capabilities. The two ideas never merged, never became one. Instead of a PSP Phone, SCEA and Sony Ericsson ended up unveiling a new PSP and a new phone. This isn't a PSP Phone. This is an Android phone that happens to play a few PlayStation games. It's not enough to take on Apple's App Store. Maybe it wasn't intended to be, but it's also something I'm highly unlikely to ever want to buy.

0 Vote(s)

Yahoo today offered an apology toWindows Phone 7 users affected by an inefficiency that left some with larger than usual data usage. The data problem had cropped up shortly after the launch of Microsoft's latest mobile venture, with some users finding their allotted cellular data use going up to an unusually high rate. Microsoft acknowledged the problem in mid-January following a query from the BBC and later said that it was an unnamed third-party's fault. Last night Microsoft fessed up that Yahoo was that third party and that the issue centered on its Web mail service. This was following a packet sniffing investigation by tech blogger Rafael Rivera, who discovered Yahoo was sending back larger than usual amounts of data every time the phone checked for new mail. "Tens of millions of people check their Yahoo Mail from their mobile device each day, and we know they want their mobile mail experience to be fast, rich, and real-time," Yahoo said in a statement. "While our default settings on all mobile platforms realize this approach, we have determined that an inefficiency exists in the synchronization of e-mail between Windows Phone Mail clients and Yahoo Mail, which can result in larger than expected data usage for some users."Yahoo reiterated that a fix for the problem was on the way, and will be here "in the coming weeks," but that for now users needed to dial back how often Windows Phone 7 devices check for mail updates. Yahoo also noted that the data issue was not affecting other phone platforms and apologized for any inconvenience to users. There's no word yet on whether the fix can be made without users having to update their phone's system software.Update at 7:22 p.m. PT: Yahoo has issued an additional statement about the issue to CNET, noting that it's not present on other mobile platforms:Yahoo! Mail is widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, including those running on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, and RIM. The issue on the Windows Phones is specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail and does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. Yahoo! has offered to provide Microsoft a near-term solution for the implementation they chose, and is encouraging Microsoft to change to a standard way of integrating with Yahoo! Mail, which would result in a permanent fix.

0 Vote(s)

REDMOND, Wash.--Microsoft is making a change to its policies forWindows Phone 7 that will allow applications to more easily run when the screen is turned off.Until now, applications that wanted to run when the screen was locked had to get the user's explicit permission. Under new rules announced on Friday, programs can do so without permission--provided they first demonstrate to Microsoft that they only use a reasonable amount of battery life (allowing more than six hours of use for an app playing audio and more than 120 hours for a program that does not play audio).(Credit:Microsoft)The move comes as the first Windows Phone 7 devices have gone on sale in Europe and Asia, with the first phones hitting the U.S. market on November 8.The policy change is a matter of both convenience--audio apps, for example, make sense to play when the screen is off--as well as fairness. Many of Microsoft's own apps, including application downloading, e-mail syncing, andZune playback and downloads are all allowed to happen in the background."This is an example of us continuing to listen to customers," Microsoft's Charlie Kindel said in an interview at Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference here. "We think it is a much better experience."Some developers have complained that Microsoft allows only certain tasks to run in the background and also that its applications do things that third-party programs cannot. Background music playing is one such feature, while another is direct control of the camera for tasks beyond basic image capture. Microsoft has allowed, for example, hardware makers like LG to do an augmented reality app, but that is not something an ordinary developer can do using the available tools.Kindel reiterated that Microsoft plans to add more controls and programming interfaces over time but has no plans to allow developers to write native applications. Third-party applications have to be written for either Silverlight or XNA development environments.

0 Vote(s)

Apple is in a dispute over the use of the iPad name in China.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)A company that claims it owns the trademark on the name "IPAD" in China says it will sue Apple for infringing on its ownership in that market, according to the Financial Times. The report, published today, weaves a complicated international legal tale surrounding Apple's efforts to secure the trademark name on its popular touch-screen tablet. Here's the gist: Taiwanese contract manufacturer Proview makes displays, but formerly sold a tablet PC named I-Pad, a trademark it registered in China and other markets like the EU, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Mexico between 2000 and 2004.The sales of the device apparently didn't go well, and in 2006 Proview sold the "global trademark" on IPAD for just over $55,000 to a mysterious U.S. company called IP Application Development, whose acronym is IPAD. Turns out, that company was likely a front for Apple. When Proview ran into financial trouble and its assets in China were seized, the creditors attempted to sell Proview's trademarks. That's when Apple stepped in. Apple is suing Proview and asking that Proview be forced to hand over the trademark in China to IP Application Development. The dispute over the trademark is still ongoing, but Proview Chairman Yang Rongshan told the FT that it plans to sue Apple "for damages in China and in the U.S.," according to the report.Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.IP Application Development is the same company that began registering the iPad trademark in the U.S., Canada, and other places in January, just before Apple officially introduced theiPad.Apple ran into a snag with its U.S. application for the name, too, because Fujitsu already owned it. Two months after Steve Jobs introduced the iPad, and a week before it went on sale, Fujitsu handed the trademark over to Apple.

0 Vote(s)

Google is putting its Place Page listings in a more prominent spot, highlighting within regular search results and adding &34'Places&34' as a search refinement on the left-hand navigation bar.(Credit:Screenshot by Tom Krazit/CNET)Google will take another swing at the Yellow Pages today, integrating local business listings directly into search results. The company is set to launch Google Place Search as a standalone search option, much the same way Google users can search for images, news, or products. It will bring the Google Places listings that business owners can claim into the main search results pages, rather than confining them to searches done within Google Maps as was the case prior to today.Google has been encouraging local restaurants, hardware stores, and dry cleaners to "claim" their business within Google by adding their Web site, telephone number, hours, and other relevant information to a form. That generates a listing for the place within Google Maps, and allows searchers and patrons of that business to leave reviews. Now for regular Google searches like "sushi restaurants san francisco" (I know I use this example every time, but there are some really good ones) users will start to see a new search result that is sort of a combination of a traditional Google search result and a Google Maps search result, with a link to that location on Google Maps, reviews aggregated from around the Web, and a 1- to 5-star rating of that business. In addition, Google will put a direct link to that business' "Place page," which could be previously found by clicking "more information" on a Google Maps search. The move highlights the Place pages much more prominently, which Google hopes will encourage more and more businesses to list their wares on Google before the company's massive search audience. The special search results will appear when Google thinks it can predict your search query has local intent, but searchers can also force a results pages of just Places listings by selecting "Places" from the left-hand navigation panel on a Google search results page. The change should start rolling out over the course of the next few days around the world.

0 Vote(s)

We&'ve just received about a half dozen rapid fire tips all showing the same thing: the Facebook app Sendible compromised in a major way.It appears that several of the largest Facebook Pages including Google, Coca-Cola, YouTube, South Park, The Daily Show, Team Coco and others are now sending out a malicious link to all of their followers that reads &''Change Your Facebook Background Here!&'' Obviously, don&'t click on it.A few people who did click on the link reported that it took you to a page outside of Facebook that asks you for some information about you. The bottom of the page reads &''Powered By AWeber Email Marketing&''.The weirdest part is just how many other Facebook users are &''liking&'' these links. We&'ve contacted Facebook about the issue and will update when we hear back from them. But these accounts compromised seem to suggest that this link is showing up in tens of millions of feeds right now.Update: And it looks like most of the malicious links have now been taken down. But more tips are coming in that the attack is ongoing and other links keep popping up. Still no word yet from Facebook on the incident.Update 2: From Mazy Kazerooni:The Sendible hack hit Lil Wayne&'s Facebook page (15 MM fans). I&'m an admin, blocked the app. They tried to post multiple timesUpdate 3: And now Sendible is saying it wasn&'t them that was hacked, instead this may be a Facebook security exploit:Just to clarify, Sendible was not hacked.
Tumblr, the fast-growing, well-funded startup which offers a simple blogging service, stumbled rather badly this weekend. Its site went down for what appears to be almost 24 hours and took its usersa4a4 blogs down with it.The good thing is that Tumblr is back, and apparently without any loss of data &8212' now I can go back to reading about hipster puppies! But in an atmosphere where you see a flood of complaints whenever therea4a4s any downtime on Facebook, Twitter, or, more relevantly, blog-hosting site WordPress.com, a day is an eternity. The VentureBeat team would be throwing chairs through windows if our hosting service ever went down for even half that long. And while the length is unprecedented, todaya4a4s downtime wasna4a4t an isolated incident. Tumblr has been experiencing growing pains for a while now as it tries to keep up with rapid traffic growth. In a new blog post, the New York-based startup acknowledges the problem:Yesterday afternoon, during planned maintenance that was not intended to interrupt service, an issue arose that took down a critical database cluster. This brought down our entire network while our engineers worked feverishly to restore these databases and bring your blogs back online. While you might feel like youa4a4ve gotten used to seeing errors on Tumblr recently, know that this is absolutely unacceptable to our team, and unacceptable for a platform determined to be the best place in the world for your creative expression.Frankly, keeping up with growth has presented more work than our small team was prepared for a4" with traffic now climbing more than 500M pageviews each month. But we are determined and focused on bringing our infrastructure well ahead of capacity as quickly as possible. Wea4a4ve nearly quadrupled our engineering team this month alone, and continue to distribute and enhance our architecture to be more resilient to failures like todaya4a4s.The outage comes as Tumblr is rumored to be closing a $25 to $30 million round led by Sequoia Capital. This could lead to some awkward conversations with investors, but hopefully the new money is what the site needs to keep things running smoothly.Previous Story: Google&'s Andy Rubin explains the Nexus One flopPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: blogging, downtimeCompanies: Tumblr Tags: blogging, downtimeCompanies: TumblrAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Microsoft said earlier today that its future version of Windows will run on chips based on ARM&'s chip architecture. In front of a huge crowd at the Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer showed once again that the software worked fine on test systems based on chips from Intel, Qualcomm (Snapdragon), Texas Instruments, and Nvidia (Tegra 2).If these ARM-based rivals can succeed in the market with their chips, they could break Intel&'s near-monopoly on Windows PCs. And if Microsoft can do it, Apple probably can too.You can see the demo for yourself in the video. Each different chip has its advantages. The Nvidia chip, for instance, can display software with lots of rich graphics. The significance of this can&'t be understated. The demo shows that the future version of Windows is running, although there&'s no telling when it will arrive. And the fact that it can run on both Intel and ARM hardware means that Microsoft stands poised to get its Windows software into PCs, phones, and tablet computers now.Previous Story: Android 3.0 for tablets looks like a leap beyond iPad for Google (video)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CES, CES 2011, chips, Consumer Electronics Show, Snapdragon, Tegra 2, WindowsCompanies: Arm, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, Texas InstrumentsPeople: steve ballmer Tags: CES, CES 2011, chips, Consumer Electronics Show, Snapdragon, Tegra 2, WindowsCompanies: Arm, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, Texas InstrumentsPeople: steve ballmerDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Research in Motion is off to a slow start with its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Production of the device is in full swing, though only at a mere 150,000 to 200,000 units a month, according to sources at component suppliers who spoke to the news site Digitimes.Shipments of the PlayBook could be ready as early as February, the part makers say. With the tablet expected to be released in the US some time in March, the current production output would give RIM a limited stock of the device. If the PlayBook proves to be wildly successful, RIM could easily find itself unable to meet consumer demand. The company previously said it would have 1 million PlayBooks available at launch &8212' now that number looks closer to 500,000. RIM can&'t really afford to have anything go wrong with the PlayBook&'s launch, as it will have to contend with upcoming Android-based tablets, like Motorola&'s Xoom, as well as Apple&'s iPad 2.RIM is also reportedly restricting production of the PlayBook to hardware manufacturer Quantaa4a4s Taiwanese plants. The company is worried that bootleg hardware manufacturers in China would get their hands on the tableta4a4s designs if it were produced there. Restricting production to Taiwan would also help protect the devicea4a4s security specifications &8212' something thata4a4s extremely important to RIM, since it still needs to convince businesses (and more importantly, their IT departments) to adopt the device.Therea4a4s still apparently room for RIM to ramp up production of the PlayBook at Quantaa4a4s Taiwanese plants, but I predict the company will keep production low until it sees just how much US consumers and businesses want the device.Via Electronista Previous Story: Canada&'s Real Ventures announces lean startup program for gamesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Blackberry, BlackBerry PlayBook, tabletsCompanies: Quanta, RIM Tags: Blackberry, BlackBerry PlayBook, tabletsCompanies: Quanta, RIMDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Mobile community Mig33 has brought together 40 million registered users on humble feature phones around the world. They play games, socialize, and browse the web using Mig33&'s mobile-first platform. Now the Singapore-based company is launching a game developer program to raise the profile of social mobile games on its platform.Mei Lin Ng, co-founder and vice president of marketing at Mig33, said in an interview that users in the emerging markets where Mig33 is strong are already enthusiastically playing games. To boost the activity, the company is creating a formal platform so that users can play each other in multiplayer games, pursue challenges in games, and view leaderboards. The new program will radically expand the company&'s game offerings, which already enjoy about 1 million game plays per day.The game platform is a lot like other mobile social game platforms, where users can play the games for free and can buy virtual goods with real money.Such virtual economies are generating a huge amount of revenue on platforms such as Facebook, online game sites, and the iPhone. But Ng said that her company has users in developing regions such as Africa and Asia.Game developers who will use the platform include Blue Leaf Games, a game company in South Africa. Blue Leaf Games released Moonbase, a massively multiplayer online strategy game, yesterday on the Mig33 platform.Other developers include TheMobileGamer in Southeast Asia, creator of Club Wars, and Kooky Panda, a Beijing-based developer with more than 300 Flash Lite games. Among Kooky Panda&'s games is Kooky Pets, where users can care for pets and create pet homes.Ng said the company will support a variety of phone platforms, including J2ME (Java), WAP, and the mobile web. Mig33 can make money on the game platform via revenue sharing. Ng said the platform lets developers concentrate on making good games while Mig33 handles the job of spreading a game via a mobile social network.During 2010, Mig33 has been making a big push to create social entertainment on its mobile platform. The company has launched more than 1,000 virtual goods, items for avatars (virtual characters), and games. The members of Mig33&'s network currently buy about 4 million virtual gifts per month and exchange nearly 1 billion Mig33 messages every day. Mig33&'s competitors include China&'s Tencent, which operates the huge QQ social chat network, and Japan&'s DeNA, a mobile social gaming company.Mig33 is in the midst of raising a round of funding. Investors include Japan&'s Gree. Ng said more game developers will be signed up over time. The company will also add new platforms, including Android, as Google&'s platform spreads to emerging countries.Next Story: Investor Vinod Khosla scoffs at smart grid wannabes Previous Story: PG&038'E exec: Why the smart utility must evolvePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: mobile social gamingCompanies: Blue Leaf Games, Kooky Panda, Mig33, TheMobileGamerPeople: Mei Lin Ng Tags: mobile social gamingCompanies: Blue Leaf Games, Kooky Panda, Mig33, TheMobileGamerPeople: Mei Lin NgDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Back in April, we noted that Google was about to escalate the so-called &''location wars&'' by reworking and rebranding their Locale Business Center as Google Places. They&'ve since done a lot of work on improving the area (despite an on-again/off-again war with Yelp over results) and they&'re clearly feeling good about it. How do I know Because starting today, they&'re going to add Place results to Google Search in a major way.Place Search will now reside on Google.com when you&'re doing a search that Google believes is attempting to discover a location. And it will also have a home in the left toolbar (you know, where &''Images&'', &''Videos&'', &''Shopping&'', etc reside) as &''Places&'', which a user can click on to just get location results. In their blog post, Google notes:One of the great things about our approach is that it makes it easier to find a comprehensive view of each place. In our new layout youa4a4ll find many more relevant links on a single results pagea4"often 30 or 40. Instead of doing eight or 10 searches, often youa4a4ll get to the sites youa4a4re looking for with just one search. In our testing Place Search saves people an average of two seconds on searches for local information. While it&'s in the process of rolling out, you can use this link to see what it will look like. As you can see, a search for &''Chicago museums&'' will bring up seven or so museums place pages it believes you may be looking for. If you want more of these place suggestions, you can click on the &''more results&'' link at the bottom of the seven. Or you can click on the Places left sidebar item. The big question, of course, is what this means for all of Google&'s competitors also in the location space You&'ll note that Google rather prominently links to results from sources of place information like Yelp and CitySearch, so some of them could actually benefit from this new style of result. Still, many of them will no longer be the number one result for specific place searches. That could hurt. That said, this new layout should be much easier for people doing the actual searches to parse and find what they&'re looking for.For their part, Google should make a killing on the sponsored links related to place searches. As you can see below, they&'re already populating a ton of these right below the all-important map on the right side. Many place results have sponsored links along the top as well.CrunchBase InformationGoogle PlacesInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

RelayRides, a crowd-sourced car-sharing service similar to Zipcar, has raised $5.1 million from August Capital and Google Ventures, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.VentureBeat reported that Google Ventures was investing an undisclosed sum into RelayRides back in December. It looks like the round is nearly complete a4" the company still wants to raise an additional $770,000, according to the regulatory filing. The document lists Howard Hartenbaum of August Capital and Joe Krauss of Google Ventures as investors in the round.RelayRides lets any car owner list their vehicle on a site and rent it out in a way similar to Zipcar&'s car-sharing service. Once listed, RelayRides sends a representative to attach a device to the car that lets any other RelayRides member access the car once reserved. The car owner sets the price, which is usually around 10 percent less than other car sharing services, and notes what time of the week the car will be available for rental. The car owner gets 65 percent of the total rental fee, and RelayRides picks up 15 percent of the fee as a transaction cost. The rest of the rental fee goes toward insurance policies. Borrowers still have to pass a background check that ensures a clean driving record, even though there is an insurance policy in place.RelayRides has been active in Boston for about nine months now, and the company was founded in November 2008. Zipcar is the site&'s obvious competition a4" which already has wide distribution across the country and plans to go public in the near future. Angel investors accounted for $600,000 of the round, while the remainder of the funding came from Google Ventures and August Capital.[Photo: pedrosimoes7]Next Story: Microsoft paying Nokia more than $1 billion to go Windows Phone Previous Story: Majesco moves into Facebook games with Parking Wars 2 launchPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: car share, car-sharingCompanies: August Capital, Google Ventures, RelayRides, Zipcar Tags: car share, car-sharingCompanies: August Capital, Google Ventures, RelayRides, ZipcarMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
photo a4s 2008 David Goehring | more info (via: Wylio)Chicago Breaking Business News is reporting that Groupon has walked away from $5-$6 billion offered by Google in widely covered deals talks.a4sCiting two sources, the report says that the deal did not go through and that the company might still elect to IPO in 2011.If these reports are true, than this will be the second time Google will have failed to go into local,a4swith Yelp talks also falling through. And walking away from that amount of money is pretty incredible. However the situation could very well still be fluid and the companies could continue to flirt until Groupon either goes public or take perhaps even more money from investors. This has been a very leaky negotiation, basically negotiating through the press, so this could just be Groupon&'s way of playing hard ball through a strategic leak. Your move Google.Update: We&'ve heard froma4sa third source that the deal is in fact off and that Groupon&'s revenue run rate is now at $2 billion instead of the oft-quoted $500 million.CrunchBase InformationGrouponGoogleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
