(Credit:Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)Match.com will start checking its members against a national sex offenders registry. The company expects to start the new policy in 60 to 90 days, Match.com told CNET this morning, and confirmed that the policy will both affect both new and existing members.Match.com has been considering the option for a while, but yesterday's decision was hastened as a result of the attention brought on by a lawsuit filed last week, spokesman Matthew Traub told the Associated Press yesterday.A woman in California has sued Match.com, claiming she was sexually assaulted by a man that she met through the online dating service. Arguing that the woman had no idea her date had been convicted of sexual battery, the suit is seeking an injunction to stop anyone from joining Match.com until the company sets up a process to screen for convicted sex offenders.Match.com president Mandy Ginsberg told the AP that the company had been hesitant to implement such screenings due to their "historical unreliability." But discussions with advisers over the past few days convinced Match.com that certain improvements have made sex offender registries more accurate, prompting the dating service to reverse its stance. To conduct its screening, the company will tap into a national registry of sex offenders set up by the federal government. This registry pulls together information from the 50 states and other U.S. territories and lets users search for sex offenders by name as well as location.Since the registry relies on coordinating data from a variety of different local sources, Match.com is cautioning that these types of checks can still be highly flawed."It is critical that this effort does not provide a false sense of security to our members," Match.com said in a statement sent to CNET. "With millions of members, and thousands of first dates a week, Match.com, like any other large community, cannot guarantee the actions of all its members. Match.com is a fantastic service, having changed the lives of millions of people through the relationships and marriages it has given rise to, but people have to exercise common sense and prudence with people they have just met, whether through an online dating service or any other means." Match.com advises its members to read and follow the safety tips that it posts on its Web site to better protect themselves both online and offline.Update at 11:10 a.m. PT:Added statement and information from Match.com.

0 Vote(s)

Monday we brought you more details on the upcoming HTC Droid Incredible 2, and now it appears that the smartphone will land at Verizon Wireless on April 28. According to a tipster, there's a 99 percent chance that the upgrade to theDroid Incredible will go on sale two weeks from today "barring any unforeseen complications." We still don't know pricing, but we suspect that it will cost in the $199 range with service. We also got to peruse the marketing flier, which confirms that the handset will offer a 1GHz processor, a front-facing camera for video conferencing, and dual CDMA/GSM support for roaming to more than 200 countries. The candy bar design looks pretty standard, though it should sport a slim profile and a sizable touch screen. Thanks, VZW_Rep

0 Vote(s)

Motorola and Huawei Technologies have patched up their legal differences in disputes over the potential sharing of trade secrets. The companies announced today that they've entered into an agreement to settle all litigation in two separate legal matters, pending certain conditions.China-based Huawei has agreed to withdraw its lawsuit against Motorola and Nokia Siemens Networks. The suit, filed in January, sought to block Motorola's sale of its wireless equipment business to Nokia Siemens on the grounds that Motorola could reveal certain Huawei trade secrets to Nokia Siemens.Related links&149' Huawei sues Motorola over sale to Nokia&149' Motorola selling network gear biz for $1.2 billion&149' Huawei rebuts 'misperceptions' of U.S. authoritiesIn return for settling the suit, Huawei will received an undisclosed amount of money from Motorola to transfer its commercial agreements with Huawei. The agreement also allows Nokia to actually use certain confidential information revealed to Motorola about Huawei in order to manage the networks that it set up around the world using Huawei technology. The $1.2 billion deal that would see Motorola's wireless networks and employees transferred to Nokia triggered the lawsuit by Huawei. Since Motorola has sold Huawei's wireless equipment for years, its employees are versed in Huawei's products and technology. Seeing Nokia Siemens as a competitor, Huawei alleged in its suit that any Motorola workers who moved over to Nokia could reveal certain trade secrets. On its end, Motorola has agreed to dismiss a claim against Huawei in a legal action in which Motorola sued Huawei for allegedly stealing trade secrets as part of a corporate espionage case. The matter also involved a networking company called Lemko, with which Huawei had a reseller agreement. In 2008, Motorola sued five former employees for sharing information with Lemko."We regret that these disputes have occurred between our two companies," Greg Brown, president and CEO of Motorola Solutions, said in a statement. "Motorola Solutions values the long-standing relationship we have had with Huawei. After reviewing the facts, we decided to resolve these matters and return to our traditional relationship of confidence and trust. I am pleased that we can again focus on having a cooperative and productive relationship."

0 Vote(s)

Security company Barracuda Networks was itself hit by a security breach over the weekend that exposed certain information from its databases. An unknown hacker, who apparently took credit for the break-in, launched an attack that exposed a list of Barracuda databases along with the names, phone numbers, and e-mail address of various Barracuda partners. The attack also uncovered the e-mail addresses of different Barracuda employees along with their passwords. Though the passwords were encrypted, they were done so using a hashing algorithm called MD5, which is considered by many to be a flawed and outdated encryption method. The attacker grabbed the information using an SQL injection script, which can exploit security holes in a database to retrieve or modify data.In a blog posted yesterday, Barracuda Executive Vice President Michael Perone acknowledged the breach of the corporate Web site data. Perone confirmed that only names and e-mail addresses were captured and that no financial information was stored in the databases that were hacked. Even though no vital or secure data was stolen, the incident is still an embarrassment for Barracuda, which is in the business of providing security to its corporate customers. And in allowing such a cyberattack, the company admitted that it made a mistake.Pointing to a series of events that led to the breach, Perone explained that Barracuda's firewall was accidentally put into a passive monitoring mode and had essentially been offline during maintenance since Friday night. That gave the attacker an open door to sniff around the site in search of security holes. The attacker eventually found one in the form of an SQL injection weakness in a PHP database script, which allowed the data to be exposed. The incident reminded Barracuda of a few key points, explained Perone: 1) You can't leave a Web site exposed for even a day or less' 2) Vulnerabilities in code can happen far away from the data you're trying to protect' and 3) Companies can't be complacent about coding practices or other operations, even with a firewall in place.Perone added that Barracuda has been notifying people whose e-mail addresses were exposed and that the company apologizes for the incident.

0 Vote(s)

Apple has come out the victor in a three-year-old patent infringement suit that would have cost the company more than $625 million for infringing on patents held by Mirror Worlds. The case, in which a jury had found Apple liable last October, targeted the Cover Flow, Spotlight search, and Time Machine features found in Apple'sMac OS. The October jury ruling was fought by the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology company with an emergency motion to stay. In that motion, Apple said the damages were too high and urged the court to re-evaluate the evidence. In the court's ruling today, which was picked up by Bloomberg, the case was turned in Apple's favor. In the conclusion section of the court's findings, U.S. District Judge Leonard Davis noted that while the jury's take on the case is important, the group might have been swayed by Mirror Worlds' argument, which the court was not sold on factually:"The jury often relies on the representations of parties, who bear the burden of being accurate and complete and living up to the representations they make to the jury. No matter how attractive a party paints the facade of its case, it is worthless without the requisite foundational support. It is the Court's job to inspect that foundation, and where it has not been properly laid under the law, to set aside the verdict to protect the reliability of our jury system. In this case, Mirror Worlds may have painted an appealing picture for the jury, but it failed to lay a solid foundation sufficient to support important elements it was required to establish under the law. Accordingly, the Court rejects Mirror Worlds' case as to infringement and damages, while affirming it as to validity and inequitable conduct."Mirror Worlds was founded by Yale University computer-science Professor David Gelernter. In its original claim, the company had accused Apple of infringing on its patents with its Mac OS X operating systems going back to 10.4 "Tiger," as well as in its iOS devices including theiPhone, iPods andiPad. An Apple representative declined to comment, and legal representatives for Mirror Worlds did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

This diagram shows the workflow of micron-beads of hydrogen in a fuel cell vehicle.(Credit:Cella Energy)Researchers developed a new, low-cost technology that makes hydrogen fuel safer to store and use, inching clean fuel vehicles closer to reality.Coaxial electrospinning is a new technology developed by Cella Energy, a spin-off from Britain's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Also called electrospraying, the process absorbs and encapsulates hydrogen gas in a microscopic sponge formed by nano-fiber hydrides. The plastic beads storing the chemical hydride are 30 times smaller than a human hair, making the microbeads flow like liquid through a vehicle's fueling system. The beads can safely be exposed to air and require less heat to drive off the encapsulated hydrogen that is used to propels the vehicle. Spent beads are stored in a separate waste tank and get recycled when drivers refuel their vehicles. For consumers, this breakthrough means they can refuel fuel cell vehicles quickly and safely without fear of the pump bursting in flames. Most fuel cell vehicles store compressed hydrogen gas in either 5,000 or 10,000 psi tanks. And although all fuel is combustable, fuel cell detractors often warn that hydrogen gas posses a safety threat to drivers. Last year, a hydrogen refueling station in New York exploded during storage tank refueling due to a faulty hose apparatus. However, this new hydrogen storage technology makes the refueling process much safer. Coupled with hydrogen fuel that's produced using renewable energy, such as SunHydro's solar-powered refueling stations, the new technology offers drivers a fast and safe clean fuel.Source: Reuters via Yahoo News

0 Vote(s)

Sorry guys. CloudGirlfriend.com is currently little more than a &quot'coming soon&quot' screen... garnering thousands of hits.(Credit:Screenshot by Eric Mack/CNET)When we at CNET first heard about Cloud Girlfriend--a yet-to-launch service that creates your dream girl and then puts her on display so all your social-networking connections can admire her witty status updates and wall posts--we turned a wary eye to the calendar. Less than a week to April Fools' Day. What are the odds that a start-up that creates fake Facebook girlfriends is itself a fake We found a couple of red flags: 1. The Web site is currently a polished but simple "launching soon" placeholder that looks to have taken about two minutes to put up using a new service called Launchrock.2. The purported business model completely misses out on the substantial market for cloud boyfriends: Step 1: Define your perfect girlfriend. Step 2: We bring her into existence. Step 3: Connect and interact with her publicly on your favorite social network. Step 4: Enjoy a public long-distance relationship with your perfect girl. But then we found the brains behind the operation, a financial analyst for San Diego-based wireless company Remec named David Fuhriman who swears it's the real deal. We had a number of questions for Fuhriman, and he answered most of them, kind of...As Fuhriman put it in an e-mail to CNET, the premise behind Cloud Girlfriend is all about boosting your online persona:"CloudGirlfriend.com's tagline is, 'The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one.' Providing social proof is important part of the dating process. We all look to cues to help us navigate through life," he said. "People who use the site don't want to be labeled, so they can use the site to jump-start the process of changing social perceptions about themselves."In other words, your pretend Facebook girl will use your wall to make you look a little more... date-able. This is sounding more and more like an Ashton Kutcher movie.Fuhriman goes on to declare that "CloudGirlfriend.com is not a new virtual porn site or an adult chat service," but instead a means for fulfilling the top tiers in Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Yes, he's serious."CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow's higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship."Fuhriman says the service will be operated by real people, not bots, and promises that it won't ruin the legitimacy of your favorite social network, making the very prescient observation that "...there will always be more profiles of dogs and cats on social networks than there will ever be of Cloud Girlfriends." The Cloud Girlfriend co-founder did leave many of our questions unanswered, though. No word on when the service will launch, how much it might cost, or what considerations are given to the poor dude who is inadvertently outed as a "cloud dater." Also no word on plans for "Cloud Boyfriends" any time soon. Then again, who needs one when "Text Boyfriends" are already available for two bucks a weekSo while the ladies can look forward to those romantic 140-character sonnets, the gentlemen among us will continue to wait for perfection from the cloud and take our other virtual girlfriends on fancy beach vacations.

0 Vote(s)

&34'Inception&34' is now available on Facebook--for 40 Credits.(Credit:Warner Bros.)After the launch of "The Dark Knight" rental on Facebook earlier this month, Warner Bros. Entertainment is expanding its product offering.Early this morning, the company released five more films that the social network's users can watch from the site. The newly available films--"Inception," "Yogi Bear," "Life As We Know It," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"--are available to rent on users' individual Facebook pages. As with "The Dark Knight," users who want to stream the rentals over the Web need to apply Facebook credits to rent the movies. However, pricing will vary. Whereas "The Dark Knight" is still available for 30 Facebook credits (about $3), the newer releases, including "Inception," "Yogi Bear," and "Life As We Know It" are retailing for 40 Facebook credits (about $4). The two "Harry Potter" films are available for 30 credits. When Warner Bros. launched rentals on Facebook earlier this month, the company made it clear that it was done solely to test the waters and find out if people want the ability to pay for and watch films on the social network. Warner Bros. Digital Distribution President Thomas Gewecke said at the time that it was "a natural extension" of his company's digital distribution efforts.Social media is becoming an important tool for film studios to both promote and generate revenue off their movies. A few weeks ago, Paramount Pictures premiered the trailer for its upcoming film "Super 8" on Twitter. The movie, which is being produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams, was the first to have its trailer premiere on Twitter. But if it's rentals users are after, they will have access to Warner Bros. content for 48 hours from the time of purchase. Users can watch the movies in full screen, pause at any point, and resume when they get back to the social network. Viewers can also post comments and interact with others while watching the film.Warner Bros. rentals are available only to customers in the U.S.

0 Vote(s)

As promised, the Home Shopping Network has begun previewing some of the new features that are part of an upcoming "mid-April" update to the Nook Color that we reported on a few days ago. Barnes & Noble has confirmed in a press release that the update would include the new app store but HSN is the one talking up the Nook Color's upcoming ability to watch Flash videos. In this video captured by a YouTuber (who interrupted a gaming session to shoot the vid), the HSN presenters play a little fast and loose with the facts. For instance, they say there aren't other devices that currently support Flash, although the Samsung Galaxy Tab does, some Android smartphones like the Motorola Atrix do, and the Motorola's Xoomtablet is on the verge of officially getting Flash support (we've been running Flash 10.2 Beta for Xoom). The presenters also say Gizmodo called the Nook Color the best Android tablet. It did--but in 2010.Alas, HSN doesn't really show anything new in its preview except to highlight bullet points touting the new features, which also include an e-mail app.(Source: YouTube via Mashable)

0 Vote(s)

Even in the wake of Japan's Fukushima nuclear crisis, nuclear power remains a safer and cleaner choice for China than coal, Pan Ziqiang, the chairman of the science and technology committee at the China National Nuclear Corp., said today. Before Japan's earthquake and tsunami, Beijing was bullish about the prospects of nuclear power in China, fast-tracking the approval of dozens of reactors along the coast as part of a wider plan to ease dependence on heavily-polluting fossil fuels.Since the quake, China has been at pains to show that its existing nuclear facilities are completely safe, and has already suspended all new project approvals pending a nationwide inspection into reactors and construction sites.China's cabinet, the State Council, also said it would also "adjust and improve" its plans for the sector."We've recently drawn up recommendations saying that these inspections [announced by the State Council] are completely necessary, but I personally believe that the nuclear power development plan should not be changed," Pan, an industry veteran of nearly 60 years, told reporters in Beijing."Everybody knows atmospheric pollution from coal is very serious...Nuclear basically has no harmful pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions are 1 percent of a coal-fired power plant."Many of the projects currently under construction use tried and tested designs from Russia, France, Canada, and the United States, but China will also build the world's first "third-generation" AP1000 reactor, built by U.S.-based Westinghouse, a unit of Japan's Toshiba.Related Stories: &149' Japan reels from earthquake, nuclear crisis (roundup) &149' Energy CEO: Costs, not safety, block new nukes &149' Will Japan's nuclear crisis affect U.S. energy debate &149' Nukes 101: Up close and personal with nuclear powerChina will also be one of the first countries to build new European Pressurized Reactors designed by France's Areva, prompting critics to claim that China has become the testing ground and shop window for unproven technologies.Pan said the dangers had been exaggerated."From a safety perspective, up to now China has never had an incident higher than level 2. From the 1950s when development began, there hasn't been a single death caused by radiation--not one--and there hasn't been a single fatal disease [caused by radiation]. Of course, there have been skin burns, and 10 people were killed in a work accident in 2007, but this is very far from the amount of deaths from China's coal industry."Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident has been rated at level 5 on the IAEA's nuclear event scale, the same as the fire that destroyed the core of Britain's Windscale nuclear plant in 1957, but lower than the level 7 accident at Chernobyl in 1986.Pan said the impact of the Chernobyl accident, the worst in the industry's history, had also been exaggerated. He noted that a World Health Organization report in 2005 put total fatalities at 56, far lower than had previously been estimated, and found no evidence of increased cancer risks apart from an initial spike in thyroid cancer among children drinking contaminated milk."We need to adopt stricter management and strengthen the safety culture and our monitoring [but] I think we should accept nuclear development."China's official capacity target still stands at 40GW by 2020, but many in the industry--including Pan--have said a target of more than 80GW would be feasible.Officials from both the government and its two state-owned nuclear contractors have stressed that China's plants are far more advanced than Japan's stricken Fukushima complex, which was first commissioned four decades ago.China's coastline is also less vulnerable to the sort of catastrophic tsunami that struck northeast Japan, they have said. There have been no serious safety accidents at China's existing nuclear projects, but the scale of its future plans has alarmed experts worried about a shortage of qualified technical staff as well as a lack of transparency.Yesterday, the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp. opened its Daya Bay nuclear facility to selected journalists from nearby Hong Kong. International media were not invited to participate.Rumors of leaks from the plant last year led to protests in Hong Kong, and the company promised to be more transparent when it came to monitoring possible radiation problems in the region.Inside a nuclear power plant (photos) Story Copyright (c) 2011 Reuters Limited. The company plans to build these turbines in three sizes, with the largest able to fit into a shipping container.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)The top prize went to Hydrovolts, a Seattle-based company that makes a hydrokinetic turbine designed specifically for manmade canals. Flowing water turns adjustable wings to generate electricity. The company's plan is to sell the turbine to landowners and facility operators that have a steady-flowing canal. One advantage of this approach is that there shouldn't be a need for environmental reviews because it's an artificial environment, according to the company. The runners-up were Philadelphia-based Blackgold Biofuels, which has a process for converting fat, oil, and grease from wastewater treatment facilities into biodiesel fuel' and Oakland, Calif.-based Fogbuster, which is also separating fat, oil, and grease (FOG) from wastewater without using chemical plants. Other companies in the competition focused on different areas, such as membranes that improve the efficiency of desalination plants or drawing usable energy from water distribution systems.ImagineH2O, which was started by people from Harvard Business School, organized the competition to bring attention to energy in water distribution and treatment. California, which has to pump much of its water long distances, uses 19 percent of the state's energy on water. Different forms of power generation have wildly different water requirements as well. Nuclear power uses 720 gallons of water per megawatt-hour of energy produced, compared to 140 gallons for natural gas, 30 for solar photovoltaics, and 1,060 for concentrating solar power plants, according to Dow Water and Process Solutions. Supplying fresh water to people around the world, the focus of today's World Water Day, is obviously vital. But water technologies tend not to attract entrepreneurs and investment in part because in industrialized countries water is relatively inexpensive as a resource and facilities are run by cash-strapped municipalities.

0 Vote(s)

I packed the damaged set into a box with a check for $6 and a note describing the failure along with my contact information, and two weeks later I received a brand new set with a note from Koss thanking me for my initial purchase.I often field user complaints about the durability of headphones and the unwillingness of companies to stand by the build of their products. I urge all those people to check out the Koss Porta Pros. The company continues to offer its no-questions-asked lifetime warranty, and I'd be hard pressed to find another vendor with the same level of customer service.
Aboard the Startup Bus, Team Bouncr watched the highway roll by while using the window as a see-through white board. AUSTIN, Texas--And so the Startup Bus has come to a stop. After three days on the road to get here from San Francisco, the coach full of "buspreneurs" I've been traveling with since early Tuesday morning has arrived for the South by Southwest Interactive Festival--historically abbreviated as SXSWi--and the chance to vie for the title of best startup created on the fly on the highways of America.Counting those aboard sister buses from Chicago, New York, Miami, and Cleveland--as well as on a second bus from San Francisco--about 160 entrepreneurs have crisscrossed the country building all kinds of applications and services while contending with poor Internet connections, even worse food, and little or no sleep. For me, this has been eye-opening. I've never spent time at any of the so-called startup weekends that have been popping up with increasing frequency, so I've never been immersed in the kind of all-you-can-code, -design, and -build intensity required by the rules of the Startup Bus.Those rules tasked the buspreneurs with forming teams from among strangers, conceiving of ideas, and executing, all before SXSWi begins on Friday. On Monday, one team from each bus, plus a seventh, at-large, team, will get the chance to pitch its new product or business to a team of as-yet-unknown judges. The first six teams will be chosen by the Startup Bus organizers, while the seventh will be picked by public voting. The buspreneurs file off the bus from San Francisco, having just arrived in Austin after three days on the Startup Bus.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)It's been an inspiring experience watching the teams on my bus work. I'm easily distracted, so I don't know if I could concentrate long and hard enough to complete the job by Austin. But these folks seem to be effortlessly getting it done, despite fatigue and the temptation of casual conversation, beer, or, heaven forbid, a nap.But from the six teams on this bus, just one will get a chance to showcase its work and potentially win funding, the attention of mentors, placement in an incubator, or even all three. Perhaps the at-large team will be from our bus, but the odds are against it. For me, having gotten somewhat attached to these teams--call it Startup Bus Stockholm Syndrome--that seems too bad. But odds are odds.Earlier this afternoon, Jonas Huckestein, who's running our bus, stood in front of everyone as we made our way across the seemingly endless expanses of West Texas, and explained that there were in fact two deliverables each team had to produce. One is a Web presence for its application or business' The other is a 1- to 4-minute video showcasing the work, and the basic story the team wants to tell. In addition, teams have to finish uploading all their work to a central Startup Bus repository by midnight tonight since, Huckestein said, all work must be done by then. Anything finished after that won't be seen by the judges.Huckestein did say that discussions were under way to come up with a system where two teams from each bus would get a chance to square off for the judges in a kind of semifinal, but he couldn't guarantee it. In other words, your best bet for getting in front of the judges is to be the best on your bus. Good luck with that. For those coming from San Francisco, driving for countless hours through the deserts of the West has been a particular challenge owing to the scarcity of strong wireless Internet. That means, it would seem, that the teams coming from the east, who drove through more developed territory, could be seen to have a bit of an advantage, as they wouldn't have had to struggle so much to get online. Then again, not being on those buses, it's hard for me to confirm that that's true. Indeed, I haven't heard those kinds of sour grapes from anyone here. That's been my own sentiment, feeling protective of my buspreneurs over the dozens I didn't get a chance to spend three days with. The buspreneurs gather up their gear after arriving in Austin outside the famous Driskill hotel.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)Now, having reached Austin, the trip is over. As anyone who follows my work knows, I am a big fan of being on the road, so as much as I love SXSWi (and the overall SXSW music and film fest), I'm feeling a little melancholy that there are no more miles to go.I'm not sure my fellow riders feel the same way. For them, the work is done, and the partying is just beginning.Stay tuned for coverage from the final Startup Bus presentations on Monday, and in the interim, watch this space for full coverage of SXSWi, and check out CNET's special SXSWi editions of Buzz Out Loud.

0 Vote(s)

You'll be able to get the electric Model S sedan with an impressive 300 mile range next year, but it will cost you a hefty premium over the base model.Tesla Motors last week provided a snapshot of the development of the Model S, an all-electric luxury sedan critical to Tesla's financial success. Thecar is now in alpha testing and the company plans to start delivering them to customer with reservations in the middle of next year.Tesla plans to offer three models of the Model S based on driving range--160 miles, 230 miles, and 300 miles. For comparison, the battery-electric Nissan Leaf has an estimated range of about 100 miles. The company said it plans to finalize pricing and options this summer, but in a company blog indicated the cost difference between the different models and expected release dates. The first Model will be a limited edition Model S Signature Series with the full 300-mile range expected for delivery in North America in mid-2012. That will cost $20,000 more than the base model, which is $57,400. The 230-mile range option costs $10,000 more than the base model.People who buy any of the Model S options will be eligible for a $7,500 tax credit, which effectively knocks the starting price for the base model to $49,900. Tesla said the shorter-range options will be ready for delivery later in 2012. The base model's batteries can be charged overnight with a 220-volt charger.Tesla projects that next year it will produce between 5,000 and 7,000 vehicles in its California factory and ramp that up to 20,000. The company received a $465 million loan from the Department of Energy for the Model S plant. In terms of battery life, Tesla said drivers can expect the lithium ion batteries to retain 70 percent of their initial capacity after seven years of 100,000 miles.

0 Vote(s)

Hacks for the Nook Color are being sold on eBay, pre-installed on microSD cards.(Credit:eBay)Hacking or rooting the Barnes & Noble Nook Color has become a commercial venture for some, and that has plenty of Android enthusiasts calling foul.In recent days folks on eBay have started selling hacks for the Nook Color pre-installed on microSD cards, which start around $60 for 4GB cards and work their way upwards. Installing one of the cards in the Nook Color's microSD slot allows users to override Barnes & Noble's "closed" Android-based Nook firmware with an open Android system that supports running a multitude of Android apps. "Modders" have been "porting" various "rooted" versions of the Android OS to the Nook Color, including a preview version of Honeycomb (Android 3.0), which is designed fortablets. This has made the affordable though slightly underpowered Nook Color ($250) a popular item with Android enthusiasts who don't want to shell out bigger money for true Android tablets like the $799 Motorola Xoom. Over at the Android Police Will Shanklin was dismayed at the turn of events. He urged readers not to pay money for a Nook Color SD card that runs Honeycomb.People have the right to buy or sell whatever they want (subject to their respective locales' laws), but the fact that people are paying this much for a pre-loaded SD card baffles me. See, the nice thing about the internet is that there are instructions for things like this that pretty much anyone with a few minutes of time and the ability to read can follow.Typically, an 4GB microSD card costs less than $10 on Amazon. An 8GB card goes for around $16.Android Guy, the listed seller of the above item, is marketing his card as superior to competing products on eBay. "This auction provides you with a 8gb microSD cards with a root that will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb with app market with step by step, easy to follow, instructions for accessing the Android market," he says. "No other dealer is offering step by step instructions for this process."Others on the Internet are, of course. And more hardcore modders will point out that running a hack off the microSD card is for novices' you get better performance running it from internal memory. How many people are "rooting" their Nook Colors is unknown, but we suspect that the numbers remain relatively small (as an overall percentage) or Barnes & Noble might try to take more action to combat it. Obviously, Barnes & Noble's intention is to sell a lot of e-books through its e-reader, and that's part of the reason the Nook Color is priced as reasonably as it is.Any way you look at it, we'd strongly encourage you not to buy one of these cards on eBay. They are, as the Android Police says, a "ripoff."

0 Vote(s)

If you happened to be watching the Super Bowl, you might recall that the Motorola Xoom was the next coming of flower power. It was the epitome of a humanity that would overcome the Big Brother nature of that identikit behemoth that is Apple. It may well be that no one at Verizon got--or, perhaps, bought--the message. For Verizon's view of the Xoom seems entirely in keeping with its strategy when it launched Droid. This thing's for boys. It's for boys who get excited about GigaHertz. It's for boys who love them some "Vendetta."If you are the sort of person who gets excited about a 3D graphics engine and a gyroscope, you will be rushing to your Verizon store to zoom off with your Xoom. But if you're one of the homemakers, senior citizens, Hell's Angels, or project managers who simply loves youriPad and cannot wait for the iPad 2, you might pause to consider whether the Xoom might be, well, a little too high tech for you.My accountant tells me he bought a Droid and had to take it back to the Verizon store because he simply couldn't work out how it, well, worked. So it will be fascinating to see what will attract buyers to the Xoom. Will it be the sense that you're in a rocket ship Or will it be something more considered, more graceful, and more, well, sensitiveSome might wonder whether the tagline "Grab it and it Grabs you" offers the right kind of sensitivity.

0 Vote(s)

Motorola&39's Xoom is priced at $799 with 3G, upgradable to 4G.(Credit:Motorola)A new entry on Best Buy's site shows the Xoom priced at $799 for a version that is 3G-capable and upgradeable to 4G. The 10.1-inch tablet is expected to give theiPad a run for its money, just as Motorola's Droid phones have done in the smartphone space. The Xoom will pack a dual-core Nvidia processor, a 1,280x800 resolution display, and dual cameras. Available in stores Thursday, the tablet has a 32GB flash drive and 1GB of system memory. The iPad 3G--priced at $729 for a 32GB model--by comparison, has a single-core Apple A4 chip, no cameras, and a 1,024x768 display. The iPad is also not upgradeable to 4G. Of course, all of this could change when the iPad 2 makes an expected appearance. The second-generation iPad is expected to have a dual-core processor, improved graphics silicon, and dual cameras, among other new specs. One of the most anticipated features of the Xoom is Google's Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating system that has specifically been designed for tablets and taps into Nvidia's dual-core Tegra processor to deliver "PC-like performance" and multitasking. Best Buy also lists a number of accessories for the Xoom such as a dock, a Xoom case, speakers, and a wireless keyboard--all from Motorola. (Via Engadget)

0 Vote(s)

We even took the unprecedented step of investigating the benefits of code provided by the independent developer community to try to improve XT performance."If you think you've heard this joke before, it's because you have. The Behold II from Samsung also ran into a wall of sorts when it came to updates.
Putting together chemical structures in Microsoft Word with the Chem4Word add-in.(Credit:Microsoft)Microsoft today announced that its chemistry add-in for Word is now freely available for download and tweaking by the open-source community. The tool, which was released in beta form in March of last year and has since been downloaded 250,000 times, lets users create and modify chemical information inside of Word 2007 and 2010. This includes chemical formulas, labels, and 2D structures that can more easily be worked on than with Word's standard formatting tools. Also known as Chem4Word, the add-in was developed through a partnership between Microsoft Research and three professors at the University of Cambridge. As part of the move to a v1 release, Microsoft has handed over the project to The Outercurve Foundation, which is putting it in its Research Accelerators Gallery where open-source community members can make changes to it."By shifting the project to the Foundation, we are encouraging scientists around the globe to engage, contribute, enhance, and support the original authors on this project," Outercurve's executive director Paula Hunter said in a blog post on the group's site. "They have done some heavy lifting, but I am sure will welcome new collaborators," she said.Since the move to Outercurve's gallery, project collaborators are already planning to bring 3D functionality to the tool, along with vector graphics rendering, and improved performance.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday launched the Urban Technology Innovation Center, an initiative to test ways to improve building efficiency. The center is a partnership among the city, universities, and businesses that aims to identify effective green building technologies. A location has not yet been chosen, but Columbia University, City University of New York, and Polytechnic Institute of New York University will be involved. One of the better examples of energy efficiency retrofits through green technology is the Empire State Building.(Credit:Empire State Building Co.)It will be funded by $250,000 from the New York City Economic Development Corp., and the three universities will provide money in kind. The group is also seeking funding through memberships. IBM will be involved in the research by providing computing technology to analyze building performance and evaluate products, said Florence Hudson, an IBM energy and environment executive who was involved in the project's formation. The center will be looking for "test beds" for building efficiency, she said today in a phone interview. A company could, for example, install more efficient windows and an upgraded heating and cooling system. By gathering information on how they perform, researchers can evaluate which products perform better than others."When you have more information about a building, you need to know what to do with it," Hudson said. There are already examples of how IT can tie into building management systems to optimize performance, though they are not widely used. Recently at IBM's headquarters in Armonk, N.Y., software found out that two compressors for heating were working at once, using more energy than was needed. The system sent an alert to the building manager who fixed the problem and thus saved energy. With the Urban Technology Innovation Center, participants are expected to share the results from test cases in New York to help improve understanding of effective building management techniques and technologies, Hudson said.

0 Vote(s)

More than a year ago, when talk of perceived problems with AT&T's wireless network hit a fever pitch online, I was among those who asserted that the performance problems some were having were due to the iPhone, as AT&T had become the first network to have to deal with millions of people using smartphones all the time. As an AT&amp'T iPhone user, I say, welcome!(Credit:Geeky Gadgets)Sure, smartphones had been around, but not in the numbers they hit when theiPhone 3G came out, and people didn't devour data as much as they did once the App Store opened. I blamed the problems mostly on iPhone users, like myself. (And I wasn't the only one.)That said, if Verizon, as expected, announces an iPhone for its network tomorrow, and, as expected, some AT&T users jump ship for the new carrier, it might actually be a good thing for AT&T--and its remaining users.Analysts from the Yankee Group estimate that 2.5 million iPhone users on AT&T might migrate to Verizon in the first year due to AT&T's overtaxed network, and that represents about 3 percent of AT&T's 93 million customers (though estimates range from 1 million to 6 million). But those are iPhone users, which use the lion's share of AT&T's wireless data. (Some estimates put it at as much as 65 percent.)A migration on that scale means AT&T might take a small revenue hit, but it also means that much of the data that those 2.5 million iPhone users eat will be freed up for the other several million iPhone users. Some analysts suggest that Verizon will sell 13.2 million iPhones in 2011, including subscriber turnover from AT&T, which is expected to sell 8.8 million itself, even with competition from Verizon. This is all academic, though, as the expected Verizon iPhone is not yet available. There's no telling how many users will switch, though it's almost certain that some will. One more variable to consider: AT&T's 3G is based on GSM's HSPA, which tends to be faster than Verizon's CDMA-based 1xEV-DO rA. It's possible AT&T iPhone users who switch to Verizon will actually get slower 3G speeds than they had before, which might cause some backlash that could keep some users from switching.AT&T Executive Vice President Larry Solomon noted the possible difference in speeds, saying, "The iPhone is built for speed, but that's not what you get with a CDMA phone. I'm not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane."This was, of course, a way to try to talk up his own network while throwing a slight diss to the competition. But Solomon can't keep that small percentage who are frustrated with AT&T's coverage issues from leaving for what they think might be greener pastures, and that might be OK. Freeing up 3G bandwidth on its network while losing little in revenue is a good thing for AT&T--and its users.

0 Vote(s)

You may be able to get your sweetie a Verizon iPhone this Valentine&39's Day.(Credit:Kent German/CNET)On the heels of Verizon's announcement of a special press conference on January 11, Boy Genius Report says a source has confirmed that Apple has blacked out retail employee vacation time for February 3 to February 6, covering a possible VerizoniPhone launch weekend. When I was a manager at an Apple Store here in Portland, this was a fairly common occurrence for big launch days. Generally these employee vacation blackout days would come months in advance, allowing our staff to make plans around those dates. This of course is only a theory, but in my experience we never had a blacked-out weekend that was not a launch (generally the iPhone orMac OS X).The regions of the United States that BGR has knowledge of have all confirmed these dates as blacked out. Verizon is expected to make the big announcement on January 11 (at 11 a.m. no less), most likely confirming they will finally be bringing Apple's iPhone to the vast Verizon network. The timing all makes sense with Verizon easing contracts to allow for upgrades, the continuous flow of parts photographs and speculation, and with Valentine's Day just two weeks later. The last remaining mystery seems to only be that of specs. Many are hoping for Apple to jump aboard the LTE 4G bandwagon and compete with 4G smartphones running Android, announced at CES. As I, and others, have noted, this is not likely, as Apple's business move to join Verizon would be to gain market share in the rapidly expanding smartphone sector. Were Apple to limit the Verizon iPhone to LTE customers, it would minimize market penetration and lose out on most of Verizon's subscriber base. Until 4G is more prevalent, Apple will most likely stick to CDMA-based versions of the iPhone. I wouldn't expect an LTE version until 2012 at the earliest. Are you making plans to line up for Verizon's iPhone Are you switching from AT&T Let me know your plans in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

The Uno electric scooter is a unique beast: an electric scooter that looks like a mini-motorcycle and folds up into a Segway-like scooter balanced on two wheels. A prototype of the Uno III, the latest invention from BPG Motors, will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show, its first public showing. It's aimed at urban dwellers, most likely in Europe, where there is a strong culture around motorcycles and scooters, said BPG Motors CEO Brad Harkavy.Uno electric scooter goes for eco-chic (photos) View the full galleryThe company plans to begin producing these electric scooters in limited quantities in about a year with mass production planned after that, according to Harkavy. It will be priced similarly to how high-end Vespa scooters are, which cost between $4,000 and $7,000, he said. The Uno III is styled like a high-performance racing motorcycle but it's much better suited for getting around town than around the race track. Its top speed is limited by scooter regulations at about 35 miles per hour and its range is 30 miles. But the Uno has some unusual features that its designers hope will add to its cachet and utility. Most dramatically, it works in two modes. In its "motorcycle" driving mode, it operates like a typical electric scooter. Its self-balancing mode, enabled by a gyroscopic control system, is when the front wheel pulls back off the floor and tucks itself in between two rear wheels. That unicycle-like mode gives it a three-foot turning radius and makes the scooter nimble enough to move in tight spaces. The owner could, for example, bring the Uno into an elevator and store it inside or operate in city centers where there are a lot of pedestrians, said Harkavy. A driver can shift from self-balancing to driving mode while the scooter is moving. The two rear wheels have their own suspension and electric motors, giving the driver better driving control when in motorcycle mode, according to the company.Started as high school science projectIn thecar-heavy culture of the U.S., scooters and electric bikes appeal to a small niche of drivers. But in other parts of the world, two-wheelers are far more common, making them good candidates for electrification. By some estimates, there are already 120 million electric bikes in China, a vehicle segment that has grown rapidly in the past decade. BPG Motors was founded by Benjamin Gulak who, when in high school, decided to start building a cleaner electric scooter after a trip to China, where dirty two-stroke scooters are common. It became a high school science project and then a company in 2008. It was funded in 2009 by private investors. Its scooter is less polluting than a gasoline-powered scooter because it's electric, but the designers are clearly trying to make it cool as well. The Uno III is actually the third vehicle produced by BPG Motors in the space of about 18 months. Previous designs, which brought a good deal of media interest, had the self-balancing mode but did not fold out as fully as the Uno III or have the same styling. In the last few years, a handful of companies have formed to develop electric motorcycles and scooters, but these products are still trying to get a real foothold in the U.S. Harkavy expects to find initial interest for its scooter with trend-setters in the U.S., such as celebrities, but a more receptive audience in Europe."We're definitely focused on the urban scooter buyer but someone looking for more unique vehicles and something quite stylish," he said.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Some of the companies that manufacture parts forApple's iPad are anticipating the company may ship 65 million of the tablet devices in 2011, according to an article in today's DigiTimes. That number far outstrips current market estimates of about 45 million. As recently as this past summer, 25 million iPads in a year was considered a staggering number. The estimates come via LG Display and Samsung, two of the companies that Apple has enlisted to build the display technology for the iPad. Looking at the 65 million figure as well as the fact that LG shipped 1.5 million iPad panels in November and Samsung shipped 1.2 million that month, DigiTimes assessed that this reflects not just Apple's optimism about the growing popularity of tablets but also potentially the sense that Apple may be "overbooking" its orders of panels. The iPad debuted in April. Analysts have guessed that Apple's total 2010 iPad sales will turn out to be around 10 million, outpacing sales of the original iPhone.DigiTimes, which is based in Taiwan, has been keeping a close eye on iPad parts manufacturers of late, primarily because of the likelihood that details may emerge about the technical specifics of a rumored second-generation iPad that may be released before spring.

0 Vote(s)

What could possibly go wrong(Credit:iFeng)In what's apparently a move to display the message "I play safe," some Chinese kids are attaching condoms to their cell phones. Instead of keeping their jimmy hats in their pockets or wallets like us puritan Westerners, the young and hip of the Far East are just putting it out there, saying, "Look, I use condoms." Good for you, proactive Chinese teens! The phone charms are called "Interesting Imported Condoms," and the wrappers feature zodiac signs or popular cartoon characters such as Astroboy. This, it seems, helps the phone charms appeal to teens, a demographic for whom condoms can be important. We're not saying, though, that these "Interesting Imported Condoms" should be brought over here. In fact, InventorSpot notes that the condoms are generic, with no manufacturer, type, or expiration date shown. This writer wouldn't trust his health, or the next 18 years of his life, to a mystery like that. He thinks that instead he'll stick with the dispensers in his local dive bar. Then again, maybe these condoms aren't meant to be used but rather just to say, "Seriously, I'm careful, you should be too." If so, there's nothing wrong with that.

0 Vote(s)

TheiPad is expected to encounter a crush of competition in 2011. A manager at Atmel, which supplies chips to tablet makers, talks about how he thinks things will shake out in the non-Apple tablet market in 2011. Atmel supplies the touch-screen controller chip for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The 7-inch screen size will be popular, but large tablets will also emerge, says Atmel.(Credit:Samsung)Binay Bajaj, a product marketing manager at Atmel, which makes touch-screen controller chips for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the HTC Evo 4G and Motorola Droid phones (among other devices) talks about how tablets debuting in 2011 will come in a variety of sizes that move the tablet experience beyond today's 10-inch iPad. Atmel is slated to supply chips to a host of tablets in 2011. Q: How many products does Atmel see comingBajaj: We think there's going to be 10 to 15 products launching early next year. What will make these tablets different than the iPadBajaj: There will be all kinds of screen sizes available. You'll see 8.9-inch, 11.6-inch, 12.1-inch. Predominantly, 10.1-inch and 7-inch. But some consumers will say the resolution that I see on a 10 inch doesn't fit my video watching experience, so I'll go for an 11.6 or 12.1. Will that volume be high Probably not. But as you increase the size, you add more [chip] processing to it. You can provide better multimedia and gaming. And different display resolutions make watching high definition videos more crisp. What else does larger screen size get youBajaj: As the screen sizes become larger, the user can lay more things on the screen, you can easily rest your palm on the screen [without triggering a response]. There's something called "palm rejection." We support that. And unintended touches, which you can reject. We call it "grip," touching the screen from the side. We have something called "grip suppression." In spite of the grip, you can still use the device. What about 7-inchBajaj: Like I said, there will be all kinds of screen sizes available. I would say 7-inch feels better in the hand [for some users]. For these people, 10-inch is just slightly too big. What will be the predominate non-Apple operating environment, in your opinionBajaj:Google Android is clearly a very popular operating system. The application base is growing very rapidly. There will be more and more Android tablets. Android is going to be in the lead. Do you see tablets eroding the laptop marketBajaj: Clearly, an erosion is going to happen. We are hearing that there is big erosion on the Netbook. The tablet gives you an always-on, always-connected experience connecting to the cloud. And as cloud computing becomes more prevalent, there's going to be more tablets.

0 Vote(s)

It should come as no surprise that Apple and Android are the two "most desired" smartphone systems, according to a new Nielsen survey of mobile phone users. But the results vary a bit based on the people who were surveyed.Among current smartphone owners questioned by Nielsen, the survey results out today show that 35 percent are looking to buy aniPhone as their next device, while 28 percent plan to go for an Android phone. But among those who currently own a feature phone and want to upgrade to a smartphone, 25 percent are eyeing an iPhone and 28 percent will likely opt for an Android device.(Credit:Nielsen)To define the difference: smartphones run a third-party operating system, such as Apple's iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia's Symbian, and they support third-party mobile apps. Feature phones use a proprietary OS, are typically unable to run third-party apps, and usually have other limitations.Among age groups, the iPhone proved slightly more desirable than an Android phone to people 18-24, 25-34, and especially those 55 and older, according to Nielsen. Those 35-54 preferred an Android device as their next phone by a slight margin. And by gender, women favor the iPhone as their next purchase, while men are more interested in Android.Smartphone owners were more decisive than feature phone users about their next device in terms of operating system. Among those who presently use a feature phone, 25 percent said they were "not sure" what their next phone would be, compared with only 13 percent of smartphone users who were equally uncertain. People 55 and older were also less certain than younger users over which mobile OS they'd want for their next phone.Overall, 29.7 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers use smartphones, compared with 70.3 percent who still have feature phones. The most common smartphones platforms in the U.S. are the iPhone's iOS and the BlackBerry OS, each with 27 percent of the market, while Android now holds a 22 percent share, according to Nielsen's data.(Credit:Nielsen)

0 Vote(s)

Next week at the D Mobile technology conference, Real Networks will demonstrate its first new major consumer product in a long time, a cross-platform media management service. The as-yet unnamed product is in two parts: software that consumers run on their computers and mobile devices that will watch for new content they store on them' and a Web service that can collect that media and stream or load it to any of the devices the consumer owns.Real's new-since-January CEO Robert Kimball believes that this product will address a major pain point for consumers and bring Real back to the public eye after years of decline. But he was clear with me that Real's consumer-facing media player (remember that) accounts for less than a tenth of the company's business and that he doesn't expect a major boost from the new service. Currently, the bulk of Real's business is in its gaming platform, its licensing of technology, and, primarily (37 percent of revenues) the back-end and white-label service Real provides to wireless carriers. But even there, Real has a lot more potential than market: about 38 million mobile subscribers use Real-developed online services, out of a potential addressable market of 700 million people, Kimball says. Real Networks CEO Robert Kimball(Credit:Real Networks) Kimball says Real has no intention of competing with Apple to build a media store, even though it does provide media store technology and services to carriers that they pitch under their own brands. In fact, Kimball says, the media aggregation service will make iTunes and other media stores more valuable to consumers by enabling them to move their content around to all the devices they have, no matter what technology platforms they're using (except for all-Apple users' Kimball admits people who live completely in the Apple cocoon don't need an aggregator). The service will handle music, videos, and photos. It will respect digital rights and not enable streaming of protected content (in other words, movies and TV shows), but it will make it much easier to move music files and playlists between devices. The first version will focus on mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and computers. Future versions may work with living-room devices like digital video recorders and game consoles. Also not in the launch version is support for users' subscriptions to streaming services like Netflix or Pandora. The service will work with media files you own, not rights to stream. Keeping in mind that we haven't yet had a demo of the product, it sounds like a reasonable and potentially useful product to help consumers tame their media archives, although with important gaps in coverage. It could, if Real sticks with it, bring the company back to public awareness. When I said to Kimball that there's a whole generation of technology users that have never heard of Real, he said, "I view that as a good thing, because we get a chance to make a first impression." It has in fact been that long since Real has been a major player (sorry) on the consumer's desktop. But without some potential for revenue generation (and by that I mean actually selling media, not pay-for-cloud-storage fees, which I don't think will add up), this is not going to move the needle much for Real's bottom line.Previously:RealNetworks plots cloud media management service early in 2011.RealNetworks: A tale of opportunities missed.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft'sXbox 360 is very clearly a gaming device, but as it turns out, a growing chunk of users are spending time using it for other things.Speaking to attendees of BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference in New York, Dennis Durkin, corporate vice president and chief operating and financial officer of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, said that 40 percent of Xbox Live members in the U.S. are spending their time on the console on non-gaming activities. That includes things like watching streaming movies on Netflix, listening to music content on theZune and Last.fm apps, and eyeballing friends on Twitter and Facebook."What we found is the core gamer might be the person who brought the console into the house, but as you widen the choices of content, it broadens what people can do with the system," Durkin said.According to Durkin, those same members are also spending an average of three hours online, per day.Microsoft currently has some 25 million Xbox Live subscribers, half of which pay for the premium version of the service, which can be paid for in monthly allotments, or by the year. Microsoft also recently increased the cost of the paid service for the first time since its inception by 20 percent, for what was quoted by Xbox Live's marketing senior director Craig Davison to be tied to increasing costs for infrastructure and securing content. Xbox Live wasn't the only focus of Durkin's presentation though' he also talked up the Xbox's Kinect motion sensor accessory, which hit shelves last week. Durkin did not go into specifics on sales numbers, but did say that the company has seen considerable demand. "Everything we've been shipping has been selling," he said. Citing reports by retailers like GameStop and Toys "R" Us, Durkin noted that the standalone Kinect accessory has also been sold out at most retailers, unlike the version which ships as part of a console bundle.Durkin also hinted at some of the advertising opportunities the Kinect opens up for Microsoft and its Xbox Live platform--particularly in getting a better breakdown of who is using the console. "It's hard to track though with a controller-based system," Durkin said. "Kinect brings a really interesting opportunity as it relates to that. Obviously with Kinect, it has facial recognition, so we can cater what content we present based on who you are."Durkin then offered up a situation where someone in a mixed household comes to use the system and gets a different set of Marketplace content presented to them, with different ads. The same technique could be used to serve up advertisements aimed at groups, when the Kinect could tell that you were in a room full of people, Durkin said. "Those are the kinds of things we can do when you add the sensor to the equation. There's a bunch of experiences in that."

0 Vote(s)

Opera Mobile, a full-fledged browser, is now available in beta form for Android phones.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)The browser wars have extended to mobile devices, and that's good news for consumers.Last week, Mozilla released a second Firefox beta for Android. Yesterday, Opera released its first Opera Mobile beta for Android. Neither is ready for prime time, much less used on more than a tiny fraction of phones, but already I see them as a step forward. Why Because now there's an important new front in the browser wars. And while that means more stress for browser makers and more testing for Web developers, it holds the potential to dramatically improve browsing for the rest of us.Today's browser market on personal computers is on fire. Programmers for all five of the major browsers--Internet Explorer,Firefox, Chrome,Safari, and Opera in descending order of usage--are working to add major new features to benefit users. Among the biggest changes are performance and a host of new Web technologies.I don't expect themobile browser market to be as fluid and dynamic as the desktop browser market. But I do expect improvements from the competition. That might even be secondary improvements. Browser companies copy good ideas liberally from one another--tabs, password and bookmark synchronization, hardware acceleration, and any number of Web technologies that grow up into standards. That means, for example, if Google hears that enough people like the forward button in Opera and Firefox, not just the back button in the built-in Android browser, perhaps Google will add it in.Another example: JavaScript speed tests are all the rage for desktop browsers as browser makers seek to top rivals on this crucially important Web technology. They're a relative rarity among mobile browsers, but Mozilla and Opera both pointed them out. Expect that publicity effort to be contagious.Maybe even others will benefit. There's plenty to like about Apple's iOS devices--responsiveness, a richly populated App Store, a slick user interface. But there's one thing iOS users have to like whether they want to or not: the browser. That's because Apple bars other browsers from the iPhone, excepting some quasi-browsers such as Opera Mini, a relatively passive vessel for boiled-down Web pages sent from an Opera proxy server that does the heavy work of reading the Web page. Opera Mobile, by contrast, is a full-fledged browser engine on its own but makes no appearance on the iPhone. One big drawback of having browser choice is that, at least on Android's default setup, the user is presented with a choice of browsers to complete the request every time an application presents a Web page link. Tap on the Amazon Kindle app's store link--what browser do you want to use Follow Web address from the Twitter or Facebook apps--what browser do you want to use You can set one to be the default browser for handling such requests, but Apple's approach enforces a cleaner process. Mozilla&39's Firefox for Android is now in its second beta version.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET) Another drawback is that the alternative browsers can be an awkward fit. Firefox and Opera Mobile are chiefly cross-platform products that sometimes mesh awkwardly with prevailing Android interfaces. Opera Mobile has yet to wire up the eminently useful menu button, but instead presents its own toolbar of options taking up precious screen space all the time. Using an Android trackball moves a little mouse pointer that looks decidedly alien on an Android phone, and you can't use the trackball to move from a username to a password field, like you can in other Android applications. The Opera interface will be familiar to Opera users on any number of other devices, but in the big picture it's probably better to fit in with the Android ways.So browser choice means complications, but my preference still is to be able to pick my own browser. On top of performance and interface differences, some browsers offer services to unify your mobile and PC experience. With browser services for synchronizing passwords, including as Firefox Sync and Opera Link, passwords stored on a desktop can be remembered, for example. Some Firefox extensions work on the mobile version, too.Computer industry executives love to profess their fondness for competition--usually when asked about how they feel about a rival's superiority in some way. I always suspected that it's often lip service: they'd rather have the more comfortable position of dominance. But as cliche as the idea is, competition really can be healthy, especially in areas such as Web browsers where it's relatively easy swap one out for another.IBM's mainframes, Digital Equipment Corp.'s servers, Microsoft's Windows--these technologies are among those that achieved dominance over rivals that led to a dangerous complacency. Apple has been leading the mobile industry around by the nose, but it doesn't have that much dominance. So perhaps, indirectly, browser competition on Android will even help those in the iOS world. It's hard to imagine somebody switching smartphones today just because of the browser, especially with market barriers such as two-year service contracts. But it's also hard to imagine that mobile browser makers will be immune to the competitive zeal of the desktop browsers.

0 Vote(s)

Ask has been fighting for search market share for a long time, but Google has just been too strong.(Credit:Screenshot by Tom Krazit/CNET)Add another name to the list of technology departments destroyed by Google. IAC, the parent company of storied search engine Ask.com, has decided to cut 130 engineering jobs and halt all work on developing an algorithmic search competitor to Google, according to a report from Bloomberg. Ask.com will still operate as a questions-and-answers site, but plans to use search technology from another company--not named in the report--to power search on its site. An Ask.com representative confirmed the news and issued a statement. "Today's move is a reflection of our shift in strategy to focus on delivering the best Q&A service on the Web and in developing technologies that provide answers to the millions of questions asked by our users every day," the company said. "Ask has been very vocal that this is our heritage and it's why our users come to us time and time again." Also, in a blog post to employees, the company said it would be closing offices in New Jersey and China. "As our loyal staff knows best, Ask has taken a lot of flak through the years, fairly and unfairly, for not having a focused, cohesive strategy, for ping-ponging across different approaches and marketing tactics," Ask.com president Doug Leeds said in the post. "The current team ended that. We know that receiving answers to questions is why Ask.com users come to the site, and we are now serving them in everything we do." It's been nearly suicidal to challenge Google in search since around 2004, when it took over the search market share lead. It now has around 65 percent of the market. Nonetheless, Barry Diller, CEO of IAC, agreed to buy the former Ask Jeeves in 2005 for $1.85 billion with hopes of gaining a piece of the lucrative search ads market. Leeds conceded in an interview with Bloomberg that Google had just proven too difficult a competitor. According to ComScore, Ask.com had just 3.7 percent of the search market in September, just barely ahead of AOL, which uses Google to power its search results. But Ask.com was one of the few companies that was still attempting to find its own way to crawl and index the Web. Yahoo has given up its efforts, outsourcing its back-end search functions to Microsoft's Bing and attempting to redefine itself as a user-interface search company.

0 Vote(s)

Coverity tallied various flaws in Android 2.2 that can lead to security vulnerabilities.(Credit:Coverity)Coverity, a company with tools to check for programming problems that pose security risks, has found 359 of them in a scan of the Android source code. There are 88 high-risk problems and 271 medium-risk problems in the source code underlying the Android kernel used in HTC's Incredible phone, the company said Tuesday. Android uses the Linux kernel, but the Android-specific components have a higher defect rate than mainstream Linux, Coverity said. Some good news for Google, though, is that the defect rate is still lower than the industry average of one defect per 1,000 lines of code. Specifically, Android's kernel was less than half of that--0.47 defects per 1,000 lines, Coverity said. Some bad news is that the Android-specific code had more problems."We found that the Android-specific files had a higher defect density (0.78 defects/kloc) than any other component in the system (the other components consist mostly of files unmodified from a Linux kernel). In addition, the Android-specific files had more high-risk defects than any other component," Coverity said in the report. The number and proportion of defects are higher in Android-specific areas of the Linux kernel, according to Coverity.(Credit:Coverity)One issue with Android, along with many other open-source projects with dispersed participation, is pinning down just whose job it is to fix a problem."Accountability for Android software integrity is fragmented," Coverity said in its report. "The problem is no different with Android than what we see across open source. Android is based on Linux, which has thousands of contributors. Compound that with the Android developers from Google, the contributors to Android from the larger development community, and OEMs [original equipment manufacturers such as phone makers] that supply components for specific configurations of Android to support different types of devices and the lines of accountability are quickly blurred."

0 Vote(s)

Union Square Ventures, the New York City firm that was an early investor in Twitter, is raising a new $200 million fund, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It looks like Fortunea4a4s Dan Primack was the first to report on the filing, which shows that Union Square has raised $135 million for the fund so far. According to one of Primack&'s sources, this fund is targeted at later-stage investments in more mature companies, an idea backed up by the fact that John Buttrick, formerly of private equity firm LiveWire Ventures, is listed as a new partner. (Union Square partner Fred Wilson declined to comment since the firm hasna4a4t finished raising the money.)If ita4a4s a later-stage fund, ita4a4s a relatively small one, not much larger than the firma4a4s $156 million second (early-stage) fund. For example, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp' Byers has set aside $250 million just to invest in social networking startups through its sFund, and is reportedly raising more than $1 billion across various funds.Wilson seemed to address the issue earlier this month, in a blog post that was published the same day that Twittera4a4s new $200 million round led by Kleiner Perkins was revealed, along with the $3.7 billion valuation. Union Square sat out the new round, as it had the round before, and while Wilson didna4a4t address the Twitter deal explicitly, he complained about firms that are so eager to own a big sizable stake in a company that they&'ll increase their investment size as the valuation gets driven up.This practice, Wilson said, is a result of firms investing a4Alarge funds of other peoplea4a4s money.a4 He added:Our firm could raise more money if we wanted it and needed it. But I think raising larger funds will ultimately lower the returns we can deliver to our investors and we have resisted doing that.Previous Story: Groupon set to raise nearly $1BPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Companies: Union Square VenturesPeople: Fred Wilson, John Buttrick Companies: Union Square VenturesPeople: Fred Wilson, John ButtrickAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Game consoles are becoming the portals to entertainment in the home. The latest evidence of that is the impending launch of the Vudu on-demand movie-streaming service on the PlayStation Network. On Nov. 23, PlayStation 3 owners will be able to access the Vudu library of more than 4,000 high-definition movies via their game consoles. The movies will feature 1080p HD and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.Vudu&'s movies include a lot of recent Hollywood hits, indie films, and other new releases. You can pretty much use this to deliver a movie theater in your home. For two-night rentals, you pay $2.Last month, Vudu announced that its movie service would be available on the new Boxee set-top boxes and the Boxee software on the PC. The point is to help the company spread its movie content to as many platforms as possible, said Edward Lichty, general manager of Vudu.Susan Panico, senior director of the PlayStation Network, said that Sony&'s goal is to make its network into a leading entertainment hub for digital content. Players who have a free PSN account can download the Vudu app from the &''media&'' category of the PlayStation Store and then access it under the video icon on the PS 3&'s cross media bar (XMB). New customers get a $5.99 credit.Rivals include Apple TV, Amazon, Cinema Now, and Xbox Live. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Vudu has 55 employees. It is owned by Wal-mart.Previous Story: Glam Media hires like crazy, on track to overtake AOLPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Dean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Details continue to leak out about Goldman Sachsa4a4 $450 million investment in Facebook (even though neither company has actually confirmed the deal). I think the most interesting tidbit comes from Dan Primack at Fortune: While some writers and analysts have suggested that the Goldman investment is a prelude to Facebooka4a4s initial public offering, Primack (citing a a4Asource who manages money for high-net-worth clients a4 including Goldman clients who have been solicited to invest in Facebooka4) says ita4a4s actually a way for the company to stay private.Facebook plans to use some of the money to buy back its shares from employees, he says. Goldman wants to raise $1.5 billion from its clients (on top of the $450 million investment) to invest in Facebook, but the amount that Facebook accepts will be determined by employee interest in the buyback, Primack says. The idea is that as interest grows in purchasing shares through services like SecondMarket, Facebook wants to stay under the Securities and Exchange Commission&'s 500-shareholder limit. If Facebook crosses that limit, it would have to disclose the same financial information as a publicly-traded company.(The SEC is reportedly investigating those secondary markets, particularly the disclosure rules for the companies and investors. The Facebook-Goldman deal is reportedly increasing the SECa4a4s interest.)Goldman clients definitely want to buy into Facebook, according to Primack and a report in the Wall Street Journal, who both say that Goldman has decided to stop accepting new investors on the deal tomorrow. Primack says the firm has already received $3 billion worth of investment requests. The other details reported are more on the fun side. Goldman is telling its clients that Facebook has more than 600 million registered users, according to Business Insider. (The last publicly disclosed number was 500 million.) And if you want to see Goldmana4a4s hush-hush note to investors about Facebook, you can read it here.Next Story: Smart grid&'s Silver Spring to unveil Prius charging technology Previous Story: Samsung shows off HDTVs with virtually no ugly bezelsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: secondary marketsCompanies: Facebook, Goldman Sachs Tags: secondary marketsCompanies: Facebook, Goldman SachsAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Cabana, an online service that lets developers quickly create a mobile application for the iPhone or other mobile devices, announced today that it is coming out of beta at the Launch conference in San Francisco. The application lets developers drag buttons and other simple functions onto a test screen for a mobile application. They can then dive into a flow-chart style interface that basically lets them program the app with some simple functions. They can add external services, like a Twitter or Instagram module, or simple functions like a refresh button or paging to the previous screen.Cabana is essentially trying to be the WordPress of mobile app development. Just as WordPress and other simple blogging services made it easy to quickly create websites, Cabana is trying to make it easy to quickly create a mobile application if a designer has a good idea. That&'s because many of the best ideas come from designers, not programmers, said Reeve Thompson, Cabana&'s founder. But the best use case for Cabana would be turning out a prototype for an iPhone or Android application as quickly as possible, said Gowalla co-founder Josh Williams, one of the event&'s judges. If someone has a good idea and they want to pitch it to a potential client or investor, Cabana might be the best way to go about getting the idea onto the iPhone and in front of an investor, he said.Cabana makes money by charging its users for the individual tools they used in their application when they decide to publish the app. That means they pay a flat fee for including a Twitter module, an advertising widget or adding the camera application. But it&'s free to try out the service and play around with its interface. Cabana also plans to start up a marketplace where users can share functions and widgets for app development.Next Story: Overstat: The easiest way to test your website Previous Story: Apple shareholders fail to force management to talk about succession planPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, app development, HTML5, iPhone, launch2011, mobile appCompanies: Cabana Tags: Android, app development, HTML5, iPhone, launch2011, mobile appCompanies: CabanaMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
