The Lexus CT 200h makes the cut on our roundup of the most fuel-efficient new vehicles.(Credit:CNET)Top 5 fuel sippers--hybrids (photos) Many of you come toCar Tech looking for high-tech cars with Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, and high-tech infotainment systems with audiophile-quality stereo systems. Some of you are just looking for the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible. For the latter group, we've rounded up 10 of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road today. What's most interesting is that, particularly with the hybrids, the most fuel-efficient vehicles are often also among the most high tech.Top 5 fuel sippers--nonhybrids (photos) To keep things simple, we've set a few rules for this throwdown. First, we're separating hybrids and conventional vehicles into separate categories--otherwise, we'd only be looking at the Top 10 hybrids. We're also using EPA-estimated combined fuel economy for the most recent model year as our metric to keep things fair. Additionally, only cars that use an internal combustion engine are included (sorry, Nissan Leaf) and we're restricting the list to those that are available for purchase today (sorry, plug-in Prius). Finally, we've also restricted our lists to new cars. (We understand that your 1980s Rabbit/Civic/Metro averages 40 mpg and we agree that it's a sweet ride, but you won't find it on these lists.)Feel free to share your experiences with these 10 fuel sippers and your mpg anecdotes in the comments below.Update: It was pointed out that we missed the new 2011 Lexus CT 200h in our hybrid roundup, so we've gone back and added it. Unfortunately, that means that the Lexus HS 250h gets bumped to number 6 and no longer makes the Top 5 cut.

0 Vote(s)

What can one say about Charlie Sheen that hasn't been said already By Charlie Sheen. It seems that there is still more. For Sheen himself today, perhaps not content with having the "Today Show," ABC, Howard Stern, and countless other radio shows as outlets, joined Twitter.Yes, Twitter.com/CharlieSheen contains the verified words of one man who some accuse of being two and a half.It seemed as if the star of a show currently suspended by CBS and Warner Bros. because of his somewhat eccentric behavior was first going to gauge just how popular he was. So you will be turned into a pillar of Hercules when I tell you that he amassed more than 50,000 followers without bothering to even tweet. That's what happens when you have, as Sheen confessed to the "Today Show," tiger blood and Adonis DNA.(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)When he finally decided to tweet his way into history, Sheen made sure it would be memorable: "Winning..! Choose your Vice... winning chooseyourvice http://twitpic.com/455ly9."You will assuredly want to know what was contained in the twitpic. Well, it was a picture of Sheen and one of his two live-in goddesses. I'm not sure if it was the blonde or the blonde. Anyway, he looked happy with her, as she held her Naked juice and he held his chocolate milk.Once he got into the tweeting swing, Sheen showed confidence. His next tweet was: "Just got invited to do the Nancy Grace show... I'd rather go on a long road trip with Chuck Lorre in a '75 Pacer....Such forthright and wise tweeting has already earned Sheen more than 500,000 followers. You can understand why. Who could not be moved by his Twitter tagline: "Born Small... Now Huge... Winning... Bring it..!" Isn't that how we'd all like to beYou might also be wondering whom Sheen is following. Well, there are, at the time of writing, 12 apostles. Among them are Alyssa Milano, Piers Morgan, and Howard Stern. More importantly, he is also following Nick Swisher of the Yankees and the great, impossible- to-mimic San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson.Wilson was recently in LA to advise Sheen on the potential production of "Major League 3."The original "Major League," in which Sheen starred, was one of the 20 greatest movies ever made. One can only hope, therefore, that Sheen will develop into one of the 20 greatest twitterers on the planet. The signs are good. The self-described "rock star from Mars" clearly has his own style, vernacular, and purpose.Soon, one hopes, he will be offering his unique perspective on the issues of the day. Like the Charlie Sheen crisis, for example.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Microsoft)Windows 98 may have been retired long ago by the vast majority of users, but the operating system is still driving more traffic than the nascentWindows Phone 7, according to Web advertising company Chitika. The ancient Windows operating system--which has about 0.04 percent worldwide OS market share, according to Net Market Share--secured about 0.019 percent of all traffic on Chitika's ad network at the beginning of January. By contrast, Windows Phone 7 captured a little less than 0.010 percent market share. It gets worse. Chitika found that Windows Phone 7 has 0.44 percent "as much traffic asiPhone and Android combined." Chitika has grown to become a sizable advertising network. Founded in 2003, the company said it works with over 100,000 Web sites and serves about 3 billion monthly ad impressions. The data it referenced in its report was taken from those 100,000 sites. As alarming as Chitika's latest numbers might be for Microsoft, it's important to note that Windows Phone 7 has spent very little time on store shelves. The mobile operating system launched in Europe and Asia in October and was made available to U.S. customers in November.Microsoft announced in December that 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices had been sold to retailers, though the company didn't say how many products had actually made their way into consumer hands.

0 Vote(s)

A computer-generated images shows Romeo the robot doing chores around the house. The future is going to suck when someone makes a robotic lawyer.(Credit:Aldebaran Robotics)In the not-too-distant future, your aging parents may be reciting "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo" in times of need.Aldebaran Robotics, a Parisian company known for creating the pint-sized Nao robot, is working with major French research organizations on a new assisted-living humanoid bot named Romeo. Set to debut in prototype form late next year, Romeo is a 4.5 foot, 88-pound autonomous companion that aims to assist the elderly and disabled with daily activities. The robot with the romantic-hero moniker could do things like keep tabs on owners' health and summon medical assistance if something appears to go wrong' keep track of small objects such as eyeglasses and remote controls' and help with tasks like taking out the trash, opening and closing doors, or fetching a snack from the fridge. Romeo has an intuitive computer-human interface based on gesture and voice control. As far as we can tell, though, it does not recite lovestruck Shakespearean sonnets. A computerized rendering of Romeo the helper bot.(Credit:Aldebaran Robotics) Still, even Shakespeare's Juliet might shed the Capulet name for Romeo's "four-vertebra backbone, articulated feet, partially soft torso, and composite leg exoskeleton." Aldebaran also boasts that Romeo has 37 degrees of freedom, and is enhanced with sensors in the eyes, feet, and backbone. (Rodolphe Gelin, head of cooperative projects at Aldebaran and one of the engineers leading the development of Romeo, goes into more technical detail in this IEEE Spectrum interview). Romeo will carry a hefty price tag of 250,000 euros ($327,500) when it becomes initially available to project partners and university researchers. Albebaran plans to offer an improved version for hospitals and nursing homes, and eventually roll out the robot to consumers. Romeo wouldn't be the first humanoid robot designed to keep the elderly company. Others include Robovie R3, a half-size humanoid designed to assist the elderly and disabled in everyday tasks like grocery shopping and navigating train stations. And Robosoft has delivered Kompai R&D robots for trials with older people people living alone in their own homes, living in residential care homes, and living at home but attending day care. While it remains to be seen how seniors will get along with these robots, I envy those who get to be tucked in by Romeo. Perhaps the affable bot will purr: "Good Night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow."

0 Vote(s)

Get me for just one cent.(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)Well, hello, Amazon. How nice to see you and your selection of Verizon Droid smartphones for just a penny. That's a great price for any cell phone, but it's quite a steal for devices like the HTC Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid II, Droid X, and Droid Pro. And you'll even give us a credit on the $35 activation fee Sure, we'd have to sign a service contract and buy by November 29, but that's still a great deal.Amazon Wireless isn't stopping with Verizon, either. For 1 cent and a contract you also can get AT&T's Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria, Motorola Backflip, or Motorola Flipout. Sprint customers also can get in on the deal with the HTC Hero, Samsung Intercept, and Samsung Moment. At this point, however, we wouldn't recommend the Moment--it's a year old, for starters--even at that price. In the coming days, we'll be reporting on more cell phone deals for the big holidays shopping weekend, so stay tuned.

0 Vote(s)

Over the last few weeks, you may have noticed that the official TechCrunch Facebook Page is more happening than ever, with better updates and, soon, regular weekly contests for our readers. And that&'s only the beginning a4"a4syou&'re going to start seeing similar improvements to our Twitter account, Buzz, and most important, TechCrunch itself. Today, we&'d like to introduce Elin Blesener, our community manager. As TechCrunch has grown in readership, it&'s become home to a vibrant community of tech enthusiasts, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and plenty of other remarkably intelligent (and good looking) people. Unfortunately, the site has also attracted its fair share of trolls and spammers. We want our comment threads to be places of engaging discussion, constructive criticism, and the occasional funny quip a4" but we&'re finding that things get out of hand all too often. Elin is going to help us get things back on track. We&'ll be releasing a set of guidelines in the near future that focus on helping improve our comments, and Elin will help keep the conversation in check both in our comment threads and across our other social media accounts. She&'s also equipped with a banhammer, which she&'ll use if she comes across any users who are consistently being spammy or offensive. But we don&'t think she&'ll need to use it too often. We also have some other exciting plans to help engage our community, but we&'re not ready to talk about them just yet. So welcome Elin! You&'ll be seeing her name a lot more often from now on. And don&'t worry, your usual gang of TC writers will be as active in the comments as ever.

0 Vote(s)

MasterImage 3D, which lets you see 3D on smartphones without wearing special glasses, can now do the same thing on 7-inch tablet computer screens.Stereoscopic 3D isn&'t for everyone, but most people prefer the glasses-free technology. On big screens, it still doesn&'t look good. But MasterImage 3D does a reasonably good job of doing glasses-free 3D on smartphones, based on what I saw at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. With constantly improving technology, stereoscopic 3D might actually be attractive some day.It has a long way to go, but MasterImage 3D keeps moving the ball forward. The Hollywood, Calif.-based company is showing off its new 3D technology at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona this week. The company is also showing off a 3D user interface, akin to a holographic image, from content partner Scaleform at the show.MasterImage 3D uses a cell-matrix parallax barrier, which delivers a wider viewing angle, brighter image, and portrait/landscape modes &8212' in contrast to 3D displays that use a striped approach. In other words, MasterImage 3D presents detailed images to your left eye and right eye in a way that doesn&'t result in ghosts or double images. Roy Taylor, general manager of MasterImage 3D&'s 3D Mobile Display division, says that they&'re very close to making the holographic chess game from the original Star Wars film. Now that would be a sight.Next Story: Cooliris&' new LiveShare app refocuses on photo-sharing Previous Story: Sony&'s undead game console: PlayStation 2 sales hit 150M after 10 yearsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 3D, glasses-free 3DCompanies: MasterImage 3DPeople: Roy Taylor Tags: 3D, glasses-free 3DCompanies: MasterImage 3DPeople: Roy TaylorDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
