iOS 5 comes with Twitter integration.(Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Twitter is playing a notable role in the upcoming iOS 5, but Facebook isn't. And now, speculation abounds over why that's the case.Over the weekend, Betanews reporter Joe Wilcox offered up several plausible reasons Facebook didn't earn the same iOS 5 cred as Twitter. He pointed out that the world's largest social network is, in some ways, a competitor to Apple's App Store by encouraging application development on its platform. He also explained that the two companies have very different philosophies on user content: Apple wants to use the cloud to sync it with other devices, while Facebook wants to keep it in the cloud.Twitter is readily available across iOS 5. Users will be able to tweet photos from the device, as well as sync the social network with their contacts list. YouTube,Safari, and Maps will also feature tweeting integration.By not offering deep Facebook integration in iOS 5, Apple is a rare company turning its back on the social network. According to Facebook's Web site, it now has over 500 million active users around the globe. That user base has prompted a slew of companies, including set-top box makers, software developers, and Web site operators to integrate Facebook into their respective products. And along the way, Facebook has benefited.According to the social network, over 250 million people "engage with Facebook on external Web sites." Moreover, about 10,000 sites per day are integrating Facebook.Though Apple's decision to not follow the crowd with Facebook integration might have something to do with the competitive nature between the companies, it might also have something to do with their shared history.Last year, when Apple unveiled Ping, its music social network in iTunes, Facebook integration was pulled at the last second. Though Apple never explained the full details of the breakdown between the firms, CEO Steve Jobs said in an interview with AllThingsD that Facebook wanted "onerous terms that we could not agree to."Following those statements, more details emerged on the disintegration in the partnership between Facebook and Apple. Citing anonymous sources, AllThingsD reported last year that Facebook blocked Apple's access to its application programming interface after the companies couldn't come to an agreement and Apple tried to access it anyway. Though Facebook typically allows for open access to its API, AllThingsD sources said the social network signs deals when a service could have a major impact on its functionality or if accessing user data comes into play. Now, months later, Facebook still isn't available in Ping (though Twitter integration is), and from time to time, claims pop up that relations are strained between Facebook and Apple. Neither company, however, has confirmed that.Even so, Steve Jobs has a long history of remembering snubs.A couple years ago, for example, Apple's formerly strong relationship with Google soured over the search giant's release ofAndroid. Jobs took a not-so-public stand against what he reportedly believed was Google's betrayal by competing against his company'siPhone. Early last year, Jobs took aim at Google in a town hall meeting with employees, sharing his belief that the search giant's "Don't be evil" slogan is nonsense. He also hinted at his displeasure with Android. "We did not enter the search business," Jobs said to his employees about Google. "They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them." Whether or not Jobs has that sort of distaste for Facebook is unknown. But something kept deep Facebook integration out of iOS 5. And so far, neither Apple nor Facebook is talking: the companies did not immediately respond to request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

There's some rough news for Topeka, Kan., the city that courted Google's ultra-high-speed municipal broadband project by changing its name to Google. The Mountain View, Calif., tech giant announced Wednesday that the lucky city that gets to be its broadband guinea pig not only isn't Topeka, but it's Kansas City, Kansas--just an hour's drive away. Ouch.More than 1,100 communities had applied since the call for applicants was announced about a year ago. Kansas City will first see the new developments next year, and Google is already looking for additional communities to join the test."Over the past decade, the jump from dial-up to broadband has led to streaming online video, digital music sales, videoconferencing over the Web, and countless other innovations that have transformed communication and commerce," a post on the official Google blog explained. "We can't wait to see what new products and services will emerge as Kansas City moves from traditional broadband to ultra high-speed fiber optic connections."Keep in mind that this is the smaller of the two cities known as Kansas City--the bigger and more famous one is across the state line in Missouri, and is likely a larger test bed than what Google was looking for. The Kansas City that's actually in Kansas (Google, did you intend this to be confusing so that more people would Google it) has a population of about 150,000 and is generally considered a suburb of its Missouri sibling."In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community, and develop relationships with local government and community organizations," Google wrote. "We've found this in Kansas City. We'll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext, and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future."Google commemorated the decision with the release of a YouTube video featuring soundbites from Google executives like co-founder Sergey Brin and Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette, along with prominent Kansas City citizens ("this is probably going to be the most buzzed event in the history of Kansas City," one said)."It is a privilege for us to deploy this high-speed network together with the hard-working people of Kansas City," Brin said at the conclusion of the video.

0 Vote(s)

Best Buy is trying a novel approach to tempt Super Bowl watchers to buy more electronics. The retailer will officially launch a buy-back service designed to lessen consumers' concerns about tech obsolescence, Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn said in an e-mail to customers. The program could also help increase electronics recycling rates. The Buy Back program is sort of an insurance policy, letting consumers get some money back for their gadgets while the goods still have some value--at least to somebody else. After purchasing a TV, mobile phone, laptop, Netbook, ortablet with the Buy Back program, a buyer has two years to bring it back and get a percentage of the purchase price as long as it's in good condition. Rates range from 50 percent within 6 months to 20 percent for between 18 months and 2 years. Between 2 years and 4 years, TV buyers can get 10 percent of the purchase price. If goods don't have any resale value, the electronics will be stripped down for parts or recycled in the U.S. as part of Best Buy's existing in-store recycling program, a company representative said last month.A growing number of buy-back services are aimed at tech consumers looking to get some money for older electronics. Secure TradeIn, a division of ReCellular, said it intends to spend $10 million in preparation of consumers trading in older smartphones for a newVerizoniPhone. Another buy-back provider is Gazelle, which shows consumers a gadget's residual value online and sends a shipping label.

0 Vote(s)

&34'Portrait of the Artist&39's Father&34' by Albrecht Durer.(Credit:Screenshot by Don Reisinger/CNET)Google Street View is going indoors.Starting today, folks can explore 17 museums around the world using Google's Street View technology, the search giant announced in a blog post. Dubbed Art Project, the initiative lets users view artwork from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the National Gallery in London, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, among others. When users choose a museum, they can opt to walk through its many halls, or learn more about a particular piece of art with an information pane to the right of the program's interface. According to Google, Art Project has more than 1,000 images of artwork available for detailed exploration. In addition, each museum chose a single artwork in its collection to be photographed in gigapixel resolution, allowing users to see the piece rendered with 7 billion pixels.Exploring museums with Google Art Project (images) "You can zoom in to see Van Gogh's famous brushwork or watch how previously hard-to-see elements of an artwork suddenly become clear--such as the tiny Latin couplet which appears in Hans Holbein the Younger's, 'The Merchant Georg Gisze,'" Google said in its blog post.To capture the experience of actually being at the museums, Google commissioned a new vehicle it's calling the "trolley." The vehicle moved around the museums and, like its counterparts on the streets, recorded images used to piece together 360-degree views. More than 385 museum rooms are represented.Google has also included a "Create an Artwork Collection" feature in Art Project, allowing users to save views of artwork they fancy. They can also add comments to the artwork and share them with others.Going forward, Google plans to add more museums and works of art. Until then, you should have plenty to keep you busy, with all the many pieces across the supported museums.

0 Vote(s)

Venture capitalists expect greater investment next year, while CEOs of VC-backed firms are looking at more work and more hiring, according to a report (PDF) released today by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and Dow Jones VentureSource.Among the venture capitalists polled for the "2011 Venture View" survey, just over half (51 percent) are looking for investment to pick up next year. Only 24 percent expect it to stay level, while the same percentage believe it will decline. CEOs running venture-backed companies were also optimistic, with 58 percent eyeing an increase in venture investing next year and 64 percent planning to turn to VCs themselves to raise more financing.(Credit:NVCA)Looking further at their own businesses next year, 82 percent of the CEOs polled expect to add staff, 50 percent are likely to improve compensation packages, and 60 percent are looking at higher sales from overseas markets.Focusing on specific sectors, investment in information technology (IT) is expected to increase more than in the life sciences and clean tech areas, according to VCs, a reversal from the past few years. Three hot areas of IT will be consumer Internet and digital media media' cloud computing' and mobile/telecom. However, consumer Internet/digial media and cloud computing may actually see some "froth," or overinvestment, from venture capitalists. When asked whether fundraising will grow, decline, or stay the same in 2011, venture capitalists were split pretty evenly across the board. But many of them see more investment coming from limited partners. Finally, a healthy number of VCs (63 percent) and CEOs (64 percent) expect the overall U.S. economy to improve next year, prompting corporations to spend more on technology, add staff, and improve their compensation packages."The market was so troubled in 2009, the sentiment was that things had to get better in 2010," NVCA president Mark Heesen said in a statement. "It turns out our predictions were correct and in the past year we have moved beyond the financial crisis and returned to doing what we do best--building great companies...While the venture industry will continue to evolve, and likely contract, the companies we fund will continue to grow, innovate, and drive the U.S. economy."The survey polled 330 venture capitalists in the U.S. and 180 CEOs of U.S.-based venture-backed companies between November 29 and December 10.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Google)The word "spiderman" appeared in books in the 1920s, long before the famed Marvel superhero debuted in the early '60s. And the term "smartphone" was in use during the first decade of the 20th century, a century before anyone picked up their firstiPhone. How do I know all this By using a new tool from Google called the Ngram Viewer. Launched by the search giant yesterday, this tool lets you trace the usage of a word or phrase during the past five centuries--five centuries!--by seeing how often it's appeared in books over that time span.Courtesy of the folks at Google Labs, Ngram Viewer can work its analysis as a result of Google's sometimes contentious digitization of vast quantities of books--more than 15 million since the project began in 2004. The Ngram tool draws on what the company calls "a subset of that corpus" totaling more than 5 million books, around 4 percent of all the books ever published. By tracing the 500 billion or so unique words that show up in those 5 million books, the tool can offer a glimpse into their history and popularity over the years.Ngram Viewer works rather simply. After you enter a word or phrase (up to five words), the tool displays a graph charting how frequently your term has appeared in books over that half a millennium. By default, the Ngram Viewer taps into books written in English. But you can change that to a different "corpus" or category of books, such as American English, British English, English Fiction, Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Spanish. You can vary the years tracked, all the way from 1500 to 2008 or anywhere in between. Providing a wide range of years gives you more of an overview, while narrowing the years lets the tool graph a word's usage in a more granular fashion year by year. You can enter multiple terms to compare their popularity. For example, typing the two terms "frankfurter" and "hot dog" shows that frankfurter's usage has remained steady over the years, but the hot dog has continued to jump in popularity since the early 1920s.But although the Ngram Viewer can tell you how frequently a certain word or phrase has shown up in books, it can't tell you why. Nor can it necessarily explain the meaning of that word or phrase at the time it was used. So discovering that the word "android" first appeared in books in the mid-18th century is interesting, but did it mean the same to an Enlightenment reader that it does to someone in the era of GoogleYou can, however, select a certain year or range of years to view a page that lists the books with your chosen word or phrase. By clicking on a specific book you can see the actually digitized pages, which in some cases can provide a bit of insight into how the word was used at the time.Researchers at Harvard University gave the project its helping hand by providing the actual datasets used to generate the information. An article on the new tool published online yesterday in Science Magazine calls it a "quantitative analysis of culture using millions of digitized books."Though Ngram Viewer sounds like a tool more for scholars and linguists, anyone with a penchant for words and the history and evolution of language should enjoy taking it for a spin.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon Wireless is gearing up to get more devices on its recently launched LTE 4G network. The company today announced 10 LTE 4G devices at the Consumer Electronics Show, all of which will be available in the first half of 2011.The company showed off four smartphones, two tablets, two mobile hotspots and two notebooks with LTE 4G capabilities &8212' a big improvement over its current batch of LTE devices, which thus far amounts to several USB modems.LTE, short for Long-Term Evolution, is a wireless technology capable of significantly faster speeds than current 3G, or third-generation, wireless-network technologies. Its main competition is WiMax, though LTE appears to be winning the standards race.As expected, HTC&'s Thunderbolt was announced, and we also saw the LG Revolution, Motorola Bionic and Xoom tablet, and several devices from Samsung &8212' including a new 4.3-inch smartphone, a mobile hotspot and a LTE Galaxy Tab. In terms of computers, Verizon showed off an HP Pavilion notebook and a Compaq netbook. There&'s also an LTE version of the Novatel Mifi, which lets you share the LTE connection with up to five other devices.Verizon also brought representatives from Skype and Activision on stage to demonstrate how they will take advantage of 4G speeds. Skype says that its next mobile version will be &''deeply integrated&'' into Verizon&'s 4G phones (and we assume tablets), all of which feature front-facing cameras for video conferencing. Activision showed how 4G could benefit multiplayer in mobile games, using Rock Band Mobile as an example.I had brief chance to play around with the Thunderbolt, and it felt just as fast as the Nexus S. In a live bandwidth speed test, the phone got an average download speed of around 18Mbps, and an upload speed of around 2Mbps.Verizon was still coy about how the LTE phones would manage simultaneous voice and data connections. Some phones would support simultaneous data/voice, while others won&'t. No real explanation was given for the discrepancy. The company also isn&'t ready to talk about its 4G pricing plans yet.Next Story: Privacy setting on Facebook financials to change in 2012 Previous Story: Is online video killing the rerun market for broadcastersPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 4G, Bionic, CES, CES 2011, Galaxy Tab, LTE, Thunderbolt, XoomCompanies: activision, Compaq, HTC, motorola, Samsung, Skype, Verizon, Verizon Wireless Tags: 4G, Bionic, CES, CES 2011, Galaxy Tab, LTE, Thunderbolt, XoomCompanies: activision, Compaq, HTC, motorola, Samsung, Skype, Verizon, Verizon WirelessDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Hulu unveiled some new features today that could help users discover more content on the TV- and movie-watching site, as well as make it a little more social. The biggest addition is the ability to create playlists. The way ita4a4s described on the Hulu blog, this feature should work the way youa4a4d expect &8212' whenever you find a video that you want to add, you just hit the a4A+a4 button and then either create a new playlist or add the video to an existing one. Playlists can be shared publicly or just be created for private use.YouTube has a similar playlist feature, and as on YouTube, this seems to create a new way for users to explore the site. Rather than just seeing whata4a4s featured on the front page or searching for their favorite show, viewers can also discover less obvious or popular videos. And it sounds like therea4a4s a lot of content to explore, with Hulu chief executive Jason Kilar claiming in November that the site has 260 million content streams (each movie, episode, or clip is counted as a single stream).Therea4a4s one drawback that immediately comes to mind: Much of the full-length content on Hulu is only available for a short time. For example, many TV shows only include their five most recent episodes on the site, making the older content available only through the Hulu Plus subscription service. So if you want a playlist that isna4a4t completely useless in a month, you&'ll have to focus on clips, not full episodes (again, kind of like fan videos on YouTube). Among the playlists already created by Hulu editors, the majority seem to focus on clips, including the best clips from Family Guy and a series of short segments that summarize the romance between Jim and Pam in The Office. The ability to create and share also gives users more reason to actually create a profile on Hulu, which in turn gives Hulu more information about its viewers. The other new feature is a redesigned navigation bar, which allows you to explore the site through a general a4Abrowsea4 option (rather than forcing you to focus on movies or TV) and through sections for a4Amost populara4 and a4Arecently addeda4 content.Next Story: Could Kodak&'s patents threaten photo-sharing sites Previous Story: Obama praises the success of Apple&'s Steve JobsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: online tv, online video, playlists, web TVCompanies: Hulu Tags: online tv, online video, playlists, web TVCompanies: HuluAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
So you&'re still looking for gifts. Well fret not &8212' thanks to our increasingly close relationships with our mobile devices, accessories for phones and tablets also make great gifts. Here are a few cool stocking stuffer ideas that will appeal to anyone.Phone and tablet casesOur mobile devices these days often feature large slabs of glass. And while thata4a4s great for enabling the proliferation of touchscreen technology, it also makes our phones and tablets ticking time bombs for scratches, cracks and shattering unless theya4a4re protected somehow. So consider a case for the clumsier members of your friends and family. Theya4a4re available in most retail stores these days, and you can also find a wide selection in Apple stores and cellular carrier retail locations. For the iPhone and iPad, I recommend cases from iSkin, a company that offers a wide variety of attractive designs that are strong enough to let your device survive a tumble. Your choices are more limited where it comes to Android phones, but generally you can find cases at the phonea4a4s respective carrier retail spots. Accessory Geeks has a wide selection of Android cases and accessories, but it may be too late to order in time for Christmas.GelaSkins: An easy way to customize mobile devicesInstead of a case, you can opt for a GelaSkin &8211' an adhesive print that can spice up the design of phones, tablets, ereaders and more. The skins are designed specifically for individual devices, so they generally fit without issue. Theya4a4re also easily removable and dona4a4t leave any residue on your device. The company has artwork available from over 100 artists, and each design looks completely original.Ia4a4ve tested a couple of GelaSkins over the past few months, and Ia4a4ve found that they get more attention than just a plain iPhone case. While they wona4a4t offer much protection for your devices, they sure do look cool.Agloves: Touchscreen capable gloves for the coldWinter and touchscreen devices just don&'t mix. Normal winter gloves have a layer of insulation that prevent capacitive touchscreens from recognizing your inputs. Enter Agloves, a company that has developed winter gloves knitted with conductive material. They&'re affordable at around $17.99, and while thin, I&'ve found that they stand up to below-freezing temperatures fairly well.Headphones: Because stock headphones usually stinkModern smartphones do more than just phone calls, email and texts &8212' they also serve as portable music players. Ita4a4s criminal that Apple still includes terrible earbuds with iPhones, and most other phone manufacturers are guilty of the same thing. So do your friends a favor, and get them a pair of headphones that dona4a4t stink. You dona4a4t have to pay much for good sound &8212' you can snag Sonya4a4s EX71 earbuds for a mere $13.89 on Amazon. If youa4a4re willing to spend a bit more, Sennheisera4a4s CX500 earbuds are a tremendous value for around $40. You can find a wide variety of headphones in retail stores, but beware of brands that youa4a4ve never heard of. Noise-cancellation headphones sound great, but are usually expensive, so seek out a4Anoise isolatinga4 sets instead.Go digital: Gift apps, music, games and moreOne of the great things about digital marketplaces is that ita4a4s incredibly easy to gift things without ever having to worry about shipping or delivery charges. On iTunes, you can gift apps, games, music, TV episodes (but not whole seasons, sadly) and movies to people instantly. Androida4a4s Market isna4a4t robust enough yet for that, unfortunately, but you can always gift music, TV, and movies via Amazon. My recommendations for digital gifts: The addictive new iPhone/iPad game Infinity Blade' Terriers, yet another great TV show canceled before its time' and the Scott Pilgrim iPad app (which is technically not giftable because it relies on in-app purchase, so you&'ll have to gift $50 of iTunes credit so your friends can buy the issues on their own).Next Story: BlackRock leads $30 million round for biofuels company LS9 Previous Story: AOL picks up unified profile provider about.me just four days after launchPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: apps, cases, gifts, headphones, smartphones, tabletsCompanies: Agloves, Apple, GelaSkins, Google Tags: apps, cases, gifts, headphones, smartphones, tabletsCompanies: Agloves, Apple, GelaSkins, GoogleDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
AdaptiveBlue, the developer of social recommendations app GetGlue, has just raised $6 million in new funding, according to an SEC filing. From the looks of the filing, it appears that Time Warner, RRE and Union Square Ventures all participated in the round.GetGlue allows users to check-in to their favorite shows, music, movies and books, and see what their friends are enjoying in real-time. With each check-in, users earn points and stickers from GetGlue and other major brands. The app also allows users to rate their favorite shows, movies, music and books and receive personalized suggestions. You can also share check-ins with your Twitter and Facebook friends, rate lists of popular shows, movies, music and books, receive weekly new releases and customized recommendations, and access existing reviews, clips and ratings for 20 million movies, books and albums.A Time Warner investment is a big vote of confidence for GetGlue, which seems to have made a growing business out of TV and movie check-ins. The startup has struck a number of high profile deals with media companies for branded partnerships including HBO, Fox, Showtime, PBS, TwiT, and Universal Pictures. And via these partnerships and new mobile offerings, GetGlue has been steadily growing. The startup officially hit 10 million monthly check-ins and ratings in September, up from an average monthly rate of 5 million ratings and check-ins in previous months.CrunchBase InformationGetGlueInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Earlier today, Winamp released a new version of its Android application that allowed users to sync their music wirelessly with their Windows desktop (disclosure: Winamp and TechCrunch are both owned by AOL). It&'s a great feature, but in the race to become the &8216'iTunes of Android&', another contender may already be about to lap Winamp. We&'ve been tracking DoubleTwist and its close affiliation with Android for over a year now. The company offers a desktop media player that looks a lot like iTunes (which is no accident given the &8216'iTunes for Android&' theme), anda4sit&'s added support for the Android App Store, a music store through Amazon MP3&8242's API, and a directory of Podcasts. Today it&'s launching what&'s probably its coolest feature yet: wireless sync, which they&'re appropriately dubbing &8216'AirSync&'. And it&'s not just for music a4"a4sDoubleTwist will let you wirelessly sync your movies, music, and photos.Given how powerful the feature is, setup is relatively painless. Install the latest DoubleTwist client for your Mac or PC, then download the new version of the Android app. Set your phone to connect to the same Wifi network as your computer, fire up the Android app, and hit the new &8216'AirSync&' button. The desktop app will detect your phone, ask you to key in a passcode (this is similar to the Bluetooth pairing process), and from there you can configure the application to sync music, photos and video (photo sync is only available on Windows for now, but is coming soon for the Mac version). All in all, the process takes around three minutes, though the sync itself will take significantly longera4sa4"a4spossibly hours a4"depending on your Wifi speed. There is one caveat though: DoubleTwist&'s Android application has historically been free' that&'s still true for the basic functionality, but you&'ll have to upgrade to a paid version if you want AirSync a4" it&'s a 99 cent upgrade for the first 10,000 users, and then will jump to $4.99 for everyone else. The coolest part about AirSync is that after the initial setup, everything should work automatically. Whenever you walk within range of your wireless network, DoubleTwist (the desktop client) will detect any new content on your phone and sync it back to the computer' you can also sync new content from your computer back to your device. This means that you can go out and shoot some videos on your phone, and, provided you don&'t walk immediately to your computer after getting home, they should already be waiting for you when you sit down at your desk (Ok, this also assumes you leave your computer on). It&'s quite impressive. Unfortunately there appear to be some issues a4"a4smy phone got very sluggish during one sync a4"a4sbut I suspect DoubleTwist will iron most of these out over the next few weeks. In a word, this is the future. Whethera4sDoubleTwist or Winamp or an official solution from Google becomes the standard, a world without annoying tethering is clearly the way things are headed.a4sDoubleTwist is the first that offers such deep integration, and it&'sa4sdefinitelya4sworth checking out.Given the timing of the launch (which was originally slated for yesterday but was pushed til today to QA test a new version), I reached out to DoubleTwist to see what they thought of Winamp&'s release. Aside from pointing out some feature differences (Winampa4sdoesn&'t support Macs and is for music only at this point), they also had this to say a4"a4sthey&'re not exactly mincing words:In general, we do not consider Winamp a competitor as they are geared towards a specific subcategory of users who dona4a4t mind endless menus, preferences and options. We are more focused on the mass market, average user who just wants to make the most out of their device without being overwhelmed by technology.CrunchBase InformationdoubleTwistInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
