(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)We expect a fair amount from a phone that represents Sprint's first investment intoWindows Phone 7, is the United State's first CDMAWindows 7 phone, and is the first of its OS to ship with the long-awaited addition of copy/paste. Thankfully, the HTC Arrive delivers. There are a few points of concern, but for the most part, the Arrive is a likable smartphone with a great keyboard and a handy tilting screen that makes a good addition to Sprint's lineup.
Chrysler is fitting an EPA-patented hydraulic drive system into its Town &amp' Country minivan.(Credit:Chrysler)Today, Chrysler and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced they would cooperate on adapting a hydraulic hybrid drive system for a Town & Country minivan. The EPA owns the patent on hydraulic hybrid systems, and currently is testing the concept in large commercial vehicles, such as UPS vans. Ford and the EPA developed a hydraulic hybrid diesel SUV in 2004 that was cited as getting 85 percent better fuel economy. In current use, the hydraulic hybrid system stores kinetic energy in hydraulic fluid tanks, releasing the pressure to drive a vehicle's wheels. Similar to an electric hybrid, if there is enough pressure in the system, the engine can shut off when the vehicle is stopped. Hydraulic pressure provides a boost for acceleration and can get the vehicle moving from a stop. The EPA says overall fuel economy increases 30 percent with the system, while city economy increases 60 percent. For the Town & Country, Chrysler envisions a series hybrid application, where hydraulic pressure is the only force turning the wheels. That pressure is created through regenerative braking and from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. The hydraulic fluid tank, referred to as an accumulator, holds 14.4 gallons at 5,000 PSI.The main challenge for Chrysler and the EPA in this new project is to make the system more compact, taking it down from its commercial size deployments to a size that can be fitted into a passenger vehicle. Don't expect to see a hydraulic hybrid Town & Country on the market anytime soon. Chrysler is exploring multiple fuel-saving technologies, some of which come from new owner Fiat.

0 Vote(s)

The clock is now ticking for consumers to file claims against Nvidia for defective graphics processors. As a result of a class action settlement, consumers were allowed to begin filing their claims related to the cost of repairing laptops that contained the defective chips on Thursday and have until March 14 to file a claim. But this settlement shouldn't be confused with a series of large payouts by Nvidia to PC makers dating back to July 2008. Models affected include older MacBook Pros.(Credit:Apple)Nvidia's problems began back in 2007, as CNET has reported, when defective Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) began showing up in laptops from Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell--among others. Nvidia responded for the first time officially in July 2008. At that time, Nvidia took a charge of $196 million. The company took additional charges over the next two years, which, in total, were close to half a billion dollars. No small part of this money has been allocated for PC makers (also referred to as original equipment manufacturers, or OEMs) that, over the last few years, have been making repairs to laptops from Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell. Most laptops affected are older models shipped in 2008. So, then, what is the class action about This is settling consumer claims, which Nvidia describes as a "group of customers who wanted remedy [because they] didn't get a repair from their OEM, or they didn't know to get a repair from their OEM, or they felt that their repair wasn't satisfactory," according to a statement from an Nvidia spokesman. (A list of the affected models is here.) Symptoms are described as (PDF) "distorted or scrambled video on the notebook computer screen...No video on the notebook computer screen even when the notebook computer is on...Random characters, lines or garbled images on the notebook computer screen," among other issues. In response to the settlement dated August 12, 2010, Nvidia issued this statement. "We can confirm that Nvidia has settled litigation concerning a weak die/packaging material set in certain versions of our previous generation MCP (media and communication processor) and GPU products used in notebook configurations." The statement continues. "Notice of this settlement has been sent to potentially affected eligible customers. Claims are being processed through a third-party administrator who is working directly with our customers. Consumers who believe they are affected and wish to file a claim should read the notice and follow the instructions that it sets out. As previously announced, our second-quarter financial results reflected costs associated with this settlement." However, starting on page 24 of the settlement, Nvidia also stated that it "has denied, and continues to deny, all allegations of wrongdoing or liability" related to the claims. And it goes on to say that it is settling "solely because it will eliminate the burden, expense, management distraction and uncertainties of further litigation and the concomitant distraction of resources and efforts from their business."

0 Vote(s)

Discussing U.S. innovation at CES are (from left) CES President Gary Shapiro, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, Cisco CEO John Chambers, and GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)AtCES, a show that's about nothing if not rapid innovation, three high-profile CEOs sat down today to dissect the complex web of factors that they say hinders the U.S. from keeping pace with the rest of the world. Speaking on an "Innovation Power Panel" this morning moderated by CES President Gary Shapiro, Cisco CEO John Chambers, GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt, and Xerox Chairman and CEO Ursula Burns agreed that a faulty education system, plus policies around exports and the highly emotional issue of immigration, all hold sway over the pace of U.S. advancement. "We have D minus in education' we need to work on bettering this," Burns said. Government and business should work together to raise educational standards, Immelt asserted, focusing specifically on K-12. "Our interests are clearly aligned." Cisco CEO John Chambers (left) listens as GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt makes a point during a CES panel on innovation. (Credit:James Martin/CNET) But while President Obama is trying to force partnerships with businesses, government, and education through foundations, Burns said, many people won't invest unless they see "outputs," adding that education is failing, in large part, because those outputs are not there. But education isn't the only obstacle, the Xerox CEO said, turning to tax policies and high employee costs in the U.S. Chambers says he has a preference for hiring in America, but current condition are working against it. What's more, foreign profits bear the burden of getting double-taxed--once in their country of origin and once when they return to the U.S., Chambers said, a policy he said encourages companies to invest foreign profits overseas, hurting investment at home. Unemployment in this country would be instantly reduced, he predicted, were companies allowed to bring profits back. That said, jobs go where the markets are, Immelt stressed. "I never apologize for putting a factory in China if my growth is going to be in China." The good news, in his eyes, is that American workers are more competitive than they were 20 years ago. Focusing more on the plusses, Immelt noted that the U.S. is "still the most innovative and entrepreneurial country in the world." Lower-level employees have more access to top executives than in other parts of the world, he said, and employees are more willing to express their opinions in America than in other countries (a point that Malcolm Gladwell tackles in his book "Outliers"). Each CEO also had the chance to briefly detail what his or her company does to stay innovative, and all focused--not surprisingly--on things like decentralized management' investing financial and human resources in R&D' and being quick to market.
The European Union wants stronger rules that would give people more control over how their personal information is used by online companies like Google and Facebook. The EU has directed its European Commission arm to draft proposals for new rules governing online data, looking to address a variety of questions: What happens to your personal data when you board a plane, open a bank account, or share photos online How is this data used and by whom How do you permanently delete profile information on social-networking Web sites Can you transfer your contacts and photos to another serviceThe new rules could require online companies to clearly explain to their users what personal information is collected, what happens to that information, and how people can modify or delete that information. Both Google and Facebook have found themselves once again in hot water over privacy issues. Google admitted last month that it grabbed e-mails and passwords while taking photos for its Street View service. Facebook recently revealed that some of its app developers had been selling user information to a data broker.Beyond addressing key questions and concerns about online data, the EC is also looking to set up a common set of rules that all 27 members of the EU would follow. The goal is to cut down on the current red tape and confusion that exists among businesses and law enforcement officials over online data collection.Released yesterday, the EC's proposals (PDF) are expected to drive further discussion and debate on the topic of online data. These proposals will be the basis for the new rules that will be proposed next year to revise and modernize the EC's 1995 Data Protection Directive, which laid out regulations for protecting personal data and allowing the free flow of that data.European citizens and other stakeholders have until January 15 of next year to comment on the new proposals."The protection of personal data is a fundamental right," EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said in a statement. "To guarantee this right, we need clear and consistent data protection rules. We also need to bring our laws up to date with the challenges raised by new technologies and globalisation. The Commission will put forward legislation next year to strengthen individuals' rights while also removing red tape to ensure the free flow of data within the EU's Single Market."

0 Vote(s)

At $250 million, the company has three times as much funding as it did last year. It also lost $150 million in investing activities. In a statement, the company pointed out that revenues were up compared to last quarter &8212' a 10 percent increase from $28.4 million.Right now, Tesla has $96.6 million on hand. Roadster sales will wind down in 2011 as the company focuses on gearing up the $42 million former NUMMI factory in Fremont for production of the Model S in 2012, which it says it is on track to do.It&'s been a quarter full of news for Tesla. It made its first recall of 439 Roadsters due to a potential fire hazard in the car&'s wiring. The company recently announced a $30 million investment from Panasonic and also reached an agreement worth $60 million to electrify the Rav4 for Toyota, which also previously invested $50 million in the company.Tesla has said in the past it will likely lose money until at least 2012.
In a post this weekend, I wrote about how the cable tv industry was finally stepping towards the cliff. And we&'d learn more today when Comcast, the largest U.S. cable operator, reported earnings. Well, the numbers are out, and it&'s not a surprise.275,000 Comcast subscribers cut the cord last quarter. Its subscriber count is down 3.5% from the same quarter last year. To be fair, some of that loss was offset by a gain in 219,000 digital cable subs. Revenue was up as customers bought higher priced bundles of tv, internet and phone service.During the earnings call, Comcast blamed the drop on the lousy economy. Always a handy excuse. Sure, many people are struggling right now, and it makes sense that the high cost of cable is an expense they can no longer afford. Comcast said, based on exit interviews, only a &8216'small number&8216' seemed to cut the cord for over-the-air signals, and they are not planning to switch to internet tv alternatives.Comcast&'s exit interviews run counter to other reports. MediaMall Technologies, maker of PlayOn, digital media server software that let&'s you watch over-the-top video on TV, says 30% of it&'s customers have canceled cable after using its box. Perhaps they weren&'t Comcast customers MediaMall Technologies estimates its customer base saves $24 million a year in cable fees.Boxee&'s CEO made the point on CNBC yesterday that his box won&'t necessarily lead to cord cutting. &''Instead, it will usher in a generation of people that never get cable.&'' He predicts with Boxee, they won&'t see the point in cable, just like young people don&'t see the point in a landline phone. The CEO of Verizon, Ivan Seidenberg made the same point last month, saying young people are &''not going to pay for something they don&'t need to.&'' He also says &''over the top is going to be a pretty big issue for cable.&''Another company to keep an eye on is Clicker. It launched a year ago at TechCrunch50. Clicker bills itself as &''the simple way to find, share and watch TV online.&'' Many viewers agree, based on feedback to my earlier post. And one more thing. No, not Apple. Actually Yahoo. You don&'t hear much about new products at Yahoo. It took the tech community 20 hours to notice Yahoo Mail&'s first redesign in five years. But, 600 million user strong Yahoo has a product called Yahoo Connected TV, which gets you access to movies, tv shows, and other web services. It&'s already built into TV&'s from Samsung, Sony, LG, Vizio, and Toshiba. Crunchgear reviewed it last year.I haven&'t even touched on mobile and DVRs vs Live. Maybe a future post. But, you can&'t tell me cable tv is not an industry being disrupted. Not overnight, but now live on tv.CrunchBase InformationComcastBoxeePlayOnClickerYahoo!Information provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

CRM and cloud giant Salesforce.com is shelling out $170 million to fully acquire its Japanese subsidiary, Salesforce Japan, from VC firm SunBridge and other stockholders. The subsidiary was formed in 2000 as a joint venture between Salesforce and SunBridge. Until now, Salesforce has the majority control (with 73 percent) but is purchasing all outstanding shares from the VC firm and other stockholders. Salesforce says the joint venture agreement has subsequently been terminated with the acquisition. It appears that the reasoning behind the move is financial. Salesforce says that Jaapan is the largest revenue contributor in Asia Pacific for Salesforce, and &''acquiring full ownership in Salesforce Japan allows Salesforce.com to further benefit from the growth in the Japanese cloud computing market and integrate and align its financial and operational functions.&'' In the first half of 2010, Asia Pacific sales accounted for 14 percent of Salesforce.coma4a4s revenue, which is an 11 percent increase from the same period in 2009. A few weeks ago, Salesforce announced that it would be adding a new data center in Tokyo to support a growing customer base in Japan. Clearly the company sees the country as a valuable revenue stream and counts Japan-based Canon and Fujitsu as customers.CrunchBase InformationSalesforceInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
