Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates couldn't be more pleased to see his company acquire Skype."I think it's a great, great deal for Skype," he told the BBC in an interview published yesterday. "I think it's a great deal for Microsoft."Microsoft announced its intentions to acquire Skype last week in a deal valued at $8.5 billion. If and when the deal closes later this year, the VoIP provider will become the Microsoft Skype Division under the leadership of its current CEO, Tony Bates.Gates, who said he used his influence as chairman of Microsoft's board of directors to help ease the deal through the approval process, told the BBC that the combined firm will vastly improve the state of video conferencing."The idea of video conferencing is going to get so much better than it is today," he said.Microsoft has already said it plans to integrate Skype's technology into the Kinect motion-gaming device and the Windows Phone platform. Microsoft also plans to connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, andXbox Live.

0 Vote(s)

About 1,000 apps are downloaded every three seconds.(Credit:Screenshot by Don Reisinger/CNET)Apple will be awarding one lucky (and timely) person a $10,000 iTunes gift card to commemorate the download of the 10 billionth App Store app.The easiest way to win the prize is to download the 10 billionth app from the marketplace before entry forms are submitted from Apple's site. In order to make it fair to those who might not want to download more apps to their devices, Apple is offering a "non-purchase method" for entering the sweepstakes. Those folks need to fill out an entry form to join in.People who opt for the non-purchase method will be able to win by submitting their entry form just prior to the 10 billionth app's download. There are some limits to Apple's giveaway. For one, entrants must be 13 years of age or older to participate. Apple is also limiting user involvement to 25 downloads or entry-form completions per day.Apple has established a countdown page for folks to see how many apps have been downloaded so far. As of this writing, the site shows over 9.7 billion downloads, and about 1,000 apps were reportedly being downloaded every three seconds.Apple's App Store growth has been impressive, to say the least. The company tallied its first billion downloads in 2009, just nine months after the App Store's launch. It announced back in June that 5 billion apps had been downloaded. But when it comes to giveaways, Apple is starting to fall short. When 13-year-old Connor Mulcahey downloaded the one billionth app, he was given aniPod Touch, a MacBook Pro, and a Time Capsule, in addition to a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

0 Vote(s)

The iPhone 3GS is getting a price cut.(Credit:Apple)Starting tomorrow, you can get your hands on theiPhone 3GS for $49 both at AT&T stores and on the carrier's Web site. The iPhone 3GS, which was first made available in 2009, had its price slashed to $99 last year. Apple, which hasn't made any announcement about changing its price for the iPhone 3GS, is still selling the device on its Web site for $99. However, considering that AT&T is reducing the price of the smartphone, it would only make sense for Apple to do the same.Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The iPhone 3GS lacks some of the refinements that consumers can find in the iPhone 4, such as a Retina Display, FaceTime video chatting, and an improved design. The iPhone 3GS does run iOS 4 and comes with either a black or white back plate, making it a fine alternative to the iPhone 4 for those who don't need the new features.Only new customers willing to enter into a two-year contract or upgrade-eligible customers can take advantage of the reduced pricing.

0 Vote(s)

Are you friend obese Is the burden of too many Facebook friends weighing you down Do you spend your days so concerned about those hundreds who hang on your every word that you can no longer function as, say, the CEO of a major tech companyJimmy Kimmel, the talk show host who isn't Jimmy Fallon, has a solution. He would like you to observe National Unfriend Day.On November 17, he encourages you to remove some of the friend fat in your life. William Shatner helped Kimmel in his announcement by philosophizing: "These people on Facebook..they're not your friends. That's all."So cast off those people whose updates reek of rancor, whose babies dribble with unhappiness, whose dogs look as uninteresting as their owners. Eliminate ex-lovers whose bodies and lives have sagged. Unfriend everyone whom you haven't seen in real life within the last 10 years, unless they have emigrated to another continent or are currently serving five years for illegally downloading cartoons.Tell your parents: "Look, Mom and Dad, I'm downsizing my life. I'm paring down my pairings. And you're just one of the pairings that has to go."I know that many of you have mathematical tendencies, so you might also try to simply delete every second friend on your bloated list. Choose the odd or even numbers, I don't mind. Then see if you really miss anyone. See if you suddenly receive more conventional missives of pain, like emails, phone calls, or, most excitingly, late-night visits to your door. Then, as your current lover, half-sister or supervisor stares at you with miffed mien, whisper to them as gently as you can: "It wasn't my idea.
(Credit:PayPal)PayPal rushed a fix out today for itsiPhone app after learning that it contained a flaw that could be used by attackers to trick PayPal users into divulging their account information. The authentication vulnerability in PayPal's iPhone app could have allowed someone to conduct what is called a "man-in-the-middle" attack, PayPal spokesman Anuj Nayar told CNET. In such an attack, people who happen to be accessing their PayPal accounts over an unsecured Wi-Fi network could be tricked into thinking they are on the legitimate PayPal site when they aren't. Only PayPal's iPhone app, which has been downloaded more than 4 million times, is affected' the Android app nor the company's Web site are affected, Nayar said. iPhone users will have to download the update from the iPhone app store to secure their phones. "We don't believe any customers have been affected at all, and if there were any affected they would be 100 percent covered by PayPal," he said. The Wall Street Journal reported on the matter today after being contacted by viaForensics, the mobile security firm that discovered the problem. PayPal learned of the problem yesterday from the newspaper, according to Nayar. "As soon as we found out, we moved to push a fix to address this vulnerability," he said. Nayar complained that viaForensics put users at risk by publicizing the information before giving PayPal a chance to fix it. "We work closely with the security community and...we ask them to report to us before going public," he said. ViaForensics could not be reached for comment late today.

0 Vote(s)

I heard from Mike Arrington this morning. Good to hear the familiar voice now wrapped in the aura of rich and retired. Of course, hea4a4s no fool and realizes quitting is not an option. If we stop doing whatever that is, we throw life in the dumpster. Nothing good follows. He may be crazy but hea4a4s not stupid. How come youa4a4re not writing for us, he begins. Actually, he tries first to confirm some rumor hea4a4s either been fed or made up about Salesforce. I recognize this is as a test, designed to illustrate my ethically challenged new reality now that I work for Marc Benioff instead of just plain admiring what he and his company are doing from the alleged neutrality of the media. That while asking me to resume writing: Please deliver your debunked credibility to my (uh, AOLa4a4s) firebrand flagship disruptive media leader. So I remind him of the numerous times Ia4a4ve sat next to him as he rides around town beating the story out of some hapless deer caught in his headlights, and that hea4a4s getting nothing because Ia4a4ve seen this movie. Unfortunately, what he really wants is for me to write some of this patented stream of consciousness drivel for him so I can be ignored and berated by the 12 year olds who are just waiting to push me into the grave and shovel the worm-riddled dirt over my irrelevant pundit ass.By now Ia4a4m sure Mike is rethinking the idea, but at the time he called he was hoping Ia4a4d deliver some wisdom about the recent apparent retirement of Microsofta4a4s second Chief Software Architect, Ray Ozzie. Aside from some mean spirited but amusing Fake Steve and a smattering of reporting, most observers seemed content to go after Steve Ballmer and let Ray move on in graceful peace. But Arrington has a good instinct not only for what he does but also for the stuff others find interesting as the Big Picture spools on.What he smells is this: Ozzie has moved on emotionally to reboot his imagination, his sense of wonder at what we can do when we honor that which is indistinguishable from magic with our time. Ita4a4s a powerful signal, that the grass is greener outside the Microsoft moat. Ita4a4s that fateful moment of a divorce, when one or both realize ita4a4s time to jump so that the healing and rebirth can begin sooner. Is covering a divorce a good way to spend my time No, and why not. I miss the old Microsoft when Bill was King and we balanced awe and fear of the juggernaut that was Windows and Office. But now Jobs is King and the Cloud is an endlessly rejuvenating hub of innovation and opportunity. Windows is just a coat of paint, vital to keep the cracks from forming and the termites from digging in, but not a place from which we daydream. Office is well-maintained, clean, freshly swabbed down with the bracing smell of antiseptic. But so what. Do I need a document to memorialize ideas or a file structure to file them or a location to store them No, no, no. How many millions of iPads need to be sold to underline the profound nature of the disruption. I dona4a4t care about the container, I love the iPad because ita4a4s like the fourth wall we break through in the comedy club and become part of the scene. The stream is a living breathing thing, and we intuit that we cana4a4t freeze dry information while ita4a4s in the process of being born. The idea is the first breath thata4a4s taken, the document is a shelter to protect the child until it can find the confidence to enter the dialogue, and the location of the spirit thata4a4s unleashed is TBD.Wea4a4re captivated not by the mechanics of the system but by the glimmer of awareness it suggests. Lotus Notes was like the liftoff from the surface of Tranquility Base: it was logical that it would work but amazing that it actually did. It may be hard to remember what it was like before the Web, but Notes was ungainly and hacked on top of a Windows that should have been called Window. Notes validated the idea that Windows was a platform you could build something bigger on. The collaboration is the computer. With Notes, Ray discovered what happens when we think across boundaries. The very physicality of the chicklets, little rooms you could open up and rummage around in, code you could attach to make things happen even when you were out getting drunk or asleep. The idea that we could not only tame the neck-bolted Frankenstein that was Windows but that we could collaborate and free associate right under the noses of IT. No sexier than 5,000 Facebook friends, but for its time a landscape that drew me in and taught me that IP tunneling over the public net could produce a secret world hidden in plain site like the rooms we carved out of plowed snow banks as the day kept the snow malleable before night turned our work into smooth ice.Ia4a4m not here to argue with Sir Tim and the WWW, but I remember what came before and after and that everything about Notes a4" from its complexity to its economics to its underlying assumption that collaboration could even be practical at all a4" changed who I was and what I expected. I was a child of the 60a4a4s, a creature of first the 61 Yankees of Mantle and Maris and Kubek and Richardson and Berra and Skowrun and on and on, and then the Beatles of John and George et al, and then Kubrick and Annie Hall and: now what The dream is over It was no longer what I wanted to do when I grew up but instead 4 dead in Ohio.Constructing the future on the 2001 soundstage and dragging McLuhan out from behind the sign was the inflection point, but when Woody Allen delivered the line a4ABoy, if only life were like this!a4 he was simultaneously making it so. Say what you will about the hairballs, but Notes made it so if you wanted to spend your time that way. It bound me to technology in a way that before was childa4a4s play and after became a lifea4a4s work. Yes, bad things could happen to good people, but good things too.But Raya4a4s not done and neither are we. In fact I think Ray wanted to go out and play and didna4a4t want to ask permission any more. I think it went something like this:Hi, Steve ita4a4s Ray. Listen, I quit. No, no, ita4a4s not you, I just dona4a4t want to spend another damn minute thinking about Saving Private Windows. How long I was thinking about tomorrow. Oh, well then how about right now. Ia4a4ve been writing this stupid memo for hours now and Ia4a4ve run out of nice things to say about Sinofsky and the rest of those idiots. Steve, youa4a4re the best but every time I write milestone it auto-corrects to millstone. In the time wea4a4ve been chatting, Jobs has taken down 2 more carriers, bought and sold Disney, and almost rebooted the Mac as an iPad charging stand. Now wait a minute Steve. Thata4a4s not right. I did stay here and finish what I started. I know, Ia4a4m just too nice about this, have been all along. Should have just shot one of those Office guys and ported it to the iPad whether you liked it or not. I told you it would be huge from minute one. Bill would have done it in a New York minute if he thought it would save the company. By the way, have you heard the new Neil Young record Ita4a4s an angry world, you know. What are you going to say Youa4a4ll have to shout to be heard over the gloating. Just say Ia4a4ve gone insane and you had to do this for my own good. Of course I was just kidding about 3 screens and a cloud. Ita4a4s just the cloud. Jobs has all the screens. Rename it Sharepoint Azure and then drop Azure. Try it: wea4a4re all in on the Sharepoint Cloud. Then rename Office Xboffice and Windows Phone the xPad. No, SharePada4a4s not bad either. See, Steve, ita4a4s going to be fine.

0 Vote(s)

The mobile SkyFire browser for the iPhone sells itself: It lets you play Flash video on the iPhone. Who wouldna4a4t want that So ita4a4s no surprise to learn that the browser has already raked in $1 million since it hit the App Store last Thursday, TechCrunch reports. The browser sells for $2.99, and the company says that its download numbers were over 300,000 for the weekend. After Applea4a4s 30 percent cut of the pie, that leaves SkyFire with over $700,000. The browser is also available for Android, Windows Mobile, and Nokia phones &8212' and notably, ita4a4s free on those platforms.SkyFirea4a4s journey to success on the iPhone has been a storied one. The company submitted the app for Applea4a4s approval in early September, and at the time we argued that Apple would have very little reason not to accept the browser. SkyFire announced the app was approved earlier this month and that it would be hitting the App Store on Thursday, November 4. But due to popular demand, SkyFire pulled the app after its servers &8212' which encode the Flash video into an iPhone-ready format &8212' got overwhelmed. The company proceeded to accept purchases in batches as it strengthened its servers for the onslaught of iPhone users. While SkyFirea4a4s technology lets iPhone users view most Flash video on the web, it doesna4a4t offer access to other Flash elements like games or animations. Hulu is also blocking the app from converting its Flash videos &8212' so iPhone users remain stuck with Hulua4a4s official app. Ita4a4ll be interesting to see how long SkyFirea4a4s sales remain strong, as ita4a4s an accurate depiction of how many users are fed up with Applea4a4s anti-Flash policy.Next Story: Airbnb lies down with VCs, wakes up with money Previous Story: The biggest phone makers in the world are falling behindPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Flash, iOS, iPhone, smartphones, videosCompanies: Apple, Skyfire Tags: Android, Flash, iOS, iPhone, smartphones, videosCompanies: Apple, SkyfireDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Ita4a4s easy to go overboard with Apple rumors, and thata4a4s what I fear is happening with this little tidbit: a source tells Cult of Mac that the rumored iPhone Mini will only stream media over the cloud, and it wona4a4t have any storage onboard to play back media. Now think about this for a second. What does Apple have to gain by implementing such a horrendously un-user friendly design Would the company that invented the iPod really prevent users from storing music on their device Especially when that device may also be running on AT&amp'Ta4a4s notoriously unstable 3G networkThe argument Cult Of Maca4a4s source gives is that Apple is looking to cut costs as much as possible for the smaller iPhone. By removing flash memory used for storage, one of the most expensive components in the iPhone, Apple could easily shave a significant chunk off the cost of building the device. The device will instead contain just the bare amount of memory necessary to stream media, potentially from Applea4a4s MobileMe service, which we reported yesterday may end up serving as a digital locker for usersa4a4 media.I just dona4a4t buy it. Apple could save money in plenty of other ways that wouldna4a4t cripple the iPhone Mini as much. In particular, Apple could just keep producing the same A4 chip and other hardware used in the iPhone 4 for the iPhone Mini, meanwhile reserving the more expensive new hardware for the iPhone 5. It certainly makes more sense than Apple creating a device that is fundamentally incompatible with the way the iTunes Store has functioned since it launched in 2003.And then if you consider how much cheaper flash memory is getting these days, Apple may not end up saving that much at all by forgoing onboard storage. Will Apple eventually release a device that will only stream media from the cloud Sure &8212' but thata4a4s going to be a while from now. Apple, a company that always thinks about user experience, would most likely wait until 4G cellular networks are more readily available before they force users to only stream media. Additionally, Apple needs to build up the infrastructure to stream media via MobileMe and the iTunes Store at a moment&'s notice.Herea4a4s what I think Cult of Maca4a4s source is trying to say: the iPhone Mini (or Nano, or whatever) will have significantly less storage than a typical iPhone. Most likely 8 gigabytes of storage &8212' the same as the lowest end iPhones right now. Apple wona4a4t prevent users from storing their own content, because that would be crazy. But since it has a small amount of memory, Apple will likely push the ability to stream media via MobileMe as well.Streaming, therefore, will augment the iPhone Mini, but it wona4a4t be the only way to consume media.Calling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
