Microsoft today urged customers to apply fixes for holes in Internet Explorer, including one being exploited in attacks, and for vulnerabilities in Windows Server Message Block (SMB) client and server software as part of a whopping Patch Tuesday. The company released 17 bulletins resolving 64 vulnerabilities, nine of them rated "critical" and eight rated "important." However, 30 of the vulnerabilities are addressed by one bulletin, a kernel update that is rated "important," that was discovered by one researcher. First priority is MS11-018, a cumulative security update for IE that is rated critical for IE6, IE7 andIE8 on Windows clients, but does not affect IE9. The company is aware of limited, targeted attacks against one of the holes, Jerry Bryant, group manager for response communications at Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, told CNET. The bulletin also addresses problems uncovered in the Pwn2Own contest at CanSecWest last month. Two vulnerabilities associated with the bulletin are being exploited in the wild, but they require attackers to set up a malicious Web site and lure victims there to compromise their computers in a drive-by attack, said Josh Abraham, security researcher at Rapid7. Also high priority, according to Microsoft's TechNet blog, are two SMB-related bulletins. One, MS11-020 is in SMB Server and affects all supported versions of Windows. It could allow an attacker to take over a server by creating a specially crafted SMB packet and sending it to any open SMB network share. Meanwhile, MS11-019 addresses two vulnerabilities in the SMB Client that could enable an attack if an attacker sent a specially crafted SMB response to a client-initiated SMB request.Bryant said that with an exploitability index rating of "one," he expects to see exploit code in the wild within the first 30 days after the release of the bulletin. Other software affected by the updates, which are detailed in this security advisory, include Visual Studio, .NET Framework and GDI+. Also today, Microsoft unveiled a new Rootkit Evasion Prevention tool and said it would apply Office File Validation, which is built into Office 2010, to Office 2003 and 2007. The Rootkit Evasion Prevention tool for 64-bit Windows systems will make it easier for antivirus products to detect and remove installed rootkits, which offer admin access to a machine and remain hidden from view by bypassing driver signing checks done by winload.exe. Adding Office File Validation to older versions of Office, which Microsoft announced in December, enables files to be scanned before they are opened and opens in Protected View or alerts the user if anything out of the ordinary is detected, Bryant said. It is included in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. "About 80 percent of Office vulnerabilities have to do with file parsing and this functionality mitigates the majority of those," he said. "While this is obviously a good development this feature doesn't stop the recent Flash zero-days we've seen," said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior antivirus researcher at Kaspersky. "After all, those are simply using a feature from Word and not a bug. Hopefully Microsoft will be able to back-port the Office 2010 sandbox at a later date, as the sandbox is able to stop the Adobe Flash zero-days." Adobe warned yesterday of a critical hole in Flash Player that is being exploited in the wild to take control of computers or cause them to crash.

0 Vote(s)

A rendering of what the inside of the Hotel Moskva will look like when reconstruction is completed.(Credit:Hotel Moskva)Apple might expand its retail stores into Russia, with a new location situated inside the reconstructed Hotel Moskva in the heart of Moscow.A report published yesterday by Apple retail store tracker ifoAppleStore cites anonymous sources who say that Apple's senior VP of retail, Ron Johnson, and Bob Bridger, who is the vice president of real estate, were in the area taking a look at the space, though had not yet finalized any paperwork. If opened, the location would be Apple's first retail store in Russia, filling the gap left with no direct online sales from the company, and would serve as an consumer-targeted alternative to the network of resellers and the authorized distributors.Notably, Russia received the second largest number ofiPad 2s from eBay during the two weeks of post-launch reseller activity the site released exclusively to CNET last week. Russia topped Canada at 500 imported iPad 2 units, more than doubling the 215 it had snapped up during the same time following the release of the first-generation device. That's certainly a good sign that there's a hungry group of customers looking to get their hands on new Apple gadgets. Last year Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited Apple's campus as part of a tour of Silicon Valley, where he met with Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The purpose of the trip was to boost high-tech businesses in Russia, as well as to invite U.S.-based companies to plant roots there. Medvedev left that visit with an iPhone 4 as a gift from Jobs, which was later found to be locked to AT&T's cellular network.

0 Vote(s)

The X-47B comes in for a landing on March 4 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.(Credit:Northrop Grumman)Almost from the very beginning seven decades ago, flying wings have been something of a specialty for the aircraft company founded by Jack Northrop. The 1940s saw the XB-35 experimental aircraft. The late 1980s brought the B-2 bomber. Now Northrop Grumman is pushing ahead with the X-47B UCAS (for unmanned combat air system), a prototype going through its fledgling stage en route to the goal of demonstrating in 2013 that an unmanned, tailless, strike fighter-size aircraft can land on and take off from an aircraft carrier.Earlier this month, the X-47B made just the second and third flights (from dry land) of its young career, not long after completing its maiden flight in early February. With the pair of flights, both of which took place in the first week of March at Edwards Air Force Base in California, Northrop Grumman said yesterday that it has begun the process of "envelope expansion" that will take the UAV through a range of altitudes, air speeds, and operating weights. Both flights saw the X-47B reach an altitude of 7,500 feet, up from the 5,000-foot accomplishment in its February debut. It flew as fast as 200 knots in the March 1 flight, which lasted 39 minutes, and up to 180 knots on March 4 over about 41 minutes. One of the results that pleased Northrop Grumman is that the flush-mounted air data system, an aspect of its stealthy, low-profile design, was able to accurately sense and communicate air speed. The envelope expansion phase will entail a planned 49 flights at Edwards AFB, over the course of which the flight requirements will get more and more complex, before the X-47B moves to the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Md., later this year. Stress testing for the X-47B AV-2 included dozens of hydraulic jacks pushing and pulling on the airframe.(Credit:Northrop Grumman)Northrop Grumman's contract with the U.S. Navy calls for two aircraft, not just this first one. The second one, referred to as AV-2, is still at the company's assembly and test facility in Palmdale, Calif., where it recently wrapped up stress tests intended to show that the airframe can tolerate the rigors of combat maneuvers--tests included those mimicking a 3-G symmetrical pull-up and a 2.4-G rolling pullout--and of using an aircraft carrier as its runway."The proof tests validate the structural design of the aircraft, and give us confidence that we can operate this plane safely and reliably in all anticipated carrier environments," said Janis Pamiljans, vice president of the Navy UCAS program for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector, in a statement earlier this week. "In particular, we now know that AV-2 can handle the stresses, strains and dynamic loads associated with catapult launches and arrested landings on the carrier deck, and air-to-air refueling."About that air-to-air refueling: The two X-47B aircraft are identical, the company says, except that AV-2 will be kitted out with aerial refueling equipment, with the goal of demonstrating unmanned aerial refueling in 2014. Northrop Grumman is also working on an aerial refueling project, under the auspices of the DARPA KQ-X program, that aims for an autonomous fill-up involving a pair of Global Hawk UAVs in 2012.The AV-2 aircraft will head to Edwards AFB later this spring.

0 Vote(s)

Socialcam has a Path-like view of videos on its iPhone app, but the real trick is how easy it makes it to share videos instantly with Facebook and Twitter.(Credit:Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET)Socialcam is hardly the first mobile app to record and share videos. Remember 12 Seconds Didn't make it. But not because it was the wrong idea. As Socialcam shows, video sharing from a mobile device can work extremely well. The secret is the execution.Socialcam has technical tricks as well as social ones. It starts uploading your videos as soon as you start recording. So when you press "stop" and go to upload your video, you may find the progress bar already pretty well filled in. If you take a video and you don't have a connection, the app will just store it until you do. You don't have to worry about it. Socially, the app ties into Facebook smoothly. You can tag your friends in your videos as soon as you take them, and this puts the vids on their walls--so people will actually see your videos even if they're not Socialcam users. Sharing on Twitter, or on e-mail or SMS, is also a simple operation. Socialcam is great for sharing video of friends on Facebook, but it could also be an important app in citizen journalism and revolution. Like Instagram, the even-easier-than-Twitpic photo sharing site, it makes sharing media so simple that it fundamentally alters the experience, when compared with previous products that did the same thing. Socialcam is a production of Justin Kan's Justin.TV. I first met Justin at a party in 2007, when he was still live-streaming from a camera mounted on his head. He's gotten smarter about video since then. Justin.TV is a growing video business, but as Kan told me at the Socialcam launch party, the Justin.TV app still requires too much work for the everyday user. It requires people to know if they want to stream video live, or record first for playback later' also they need to worry about their Internet connection. Socialcam does far less than the mobile video studio that Justin.TV is, but it takes so much of the thinking out of the equation that it makes doing video much easier. Because of that, it is likely to become a more powerful and important service. Here's a Socialcam video from the product's launch party, which I attended in the line of duty Tuesday night. I didn't stay long:

0 Vote(s)

SoloPower&39's solar collectors are flexible and can be adhered onto a flat roof.(Credit:SoloPower)SoloPower said yesterday that it has conditional commitment from the U.S. Department of Energy for a $197 million loan guarantee to build a factory in Oregon. The company plans to start construction of a plant in Wilsonville, Ore., in the second quarter of this year. Once operating, it will be able to turn out 400 megawatts worth of solar panels per year. The move gives San Jose, Calif.-based SoloPower the financial wherewithal to expand beyond a smaller demonstration plant in San Jose. The company has also gotten a loan and tax credits from the state of Oregon. The company makes flexible solar collectors using thin-film solar cells made from a combination of copper, indium, gallium, and selenium (CIGS). Rather than the traditional glass-covered rigid panel, it makes thin strips which are designed for quick installation on corporate rooftops. It's the third thin-film solar company to receive a DOE loan guarantee, a program designed to provide relatively low-cost financing to companies seeking to commercialize new technologies. Colorado-based Abound Solar, which makes cadmium telluride thin-film panels, received $400 million in a DOE loan as part of $510 million in financing last December. In an interview earlier this year, DOE Loan Guarantee executive director Jonathan Silver said that thin-film solar is one technology with which U.S. technology companies have an opportunity to edge out global competitors, particularly low-cost Chinese suppliers using traditional polycrystalline silicon solar cells. The loan guarantee program, which could be scaled back as part of budget cuts, has yet to deliver a clear winner in solar. The first recipient of a DOE loan was Solyndra, which also makes a specialized solar collector for corporate rooftops but, like all solar companies, faces ongoing cost competition globally.

0 Vote(s)
