Toyota Motor will pay to fix about 650,000 Prius models worldwide for a coolant pump glitch that could cause the top-selling hybrid to overheat and lose power, the automaker said. The repair campaign covers Prius cars for the model years 2004 to 2007. The bulk of thecars, or 378,000 units, are in the United States. The Japanese automaker said it had not received any reports of accidents or injuries from problems with the pump, which circulates coolant for the hybrid system.2010 Toyota Prius(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET) Major automakers, including Toyota, often conduct repair campaigns that are separate from safety recalls filed with U.S. regulators in cases where they determine that a defect does not present a safety risk. Toyota said the design of the electric water pump let air bubbles enter the system, slowing coolant circulation and allowing the hybrid's components to heat up. The heating up of the components could trigger a warning light. If left unattended, the Prius could overheat and drop into a "fail-safe" mode where engine power would be reduced, Toyota said. Toyota said it will begin notifying owners of the Prius repair campaign in the United States in early December. The automaker has used a different pump design on the Prius hybrid since 2007 and uses a different type of pump for other hybrids, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said. Toyota will cover the cost of the repairs, including more than $100 in labor for each Prius fixed at a U.S. dealership. The repair campaign on one of the best-known Toyota vehicles comes at the end of a year in which the top global automaker has struggled to distance itself from a damaging series of recalls and concerns about its quality management. Since last November, Toyota has recalled about 14 million vehicles worldwide, including about 11 million in the United States.

0 Vote(s)

Energy Secretary Steven Chu today warned that "time is running out" for the U.S. to be the global leader in clean-energy technologies because China and other countries are racing ahead.Chu gave a speech at the National Press Club where he suggested that the U.S. is reaching a "Sputnik moment" where political leaders and the general population will realize how the U.S. has fallen behind other countries in science and technology. (Credit:DOE)In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite to orbit the Earth, one of the seminal moments in launching the government-led space program in the U.S. The space program captured the imagination of engineers and scientists at the time and yielded advances in many fields.Chu said that the U.S. needs to fund research in clean-energy technologies in order to stay apace and take advantage of the economic opportunity that cleaner energy technologies represent globally."America still has the opportunity to lead in a world that will need a new industrial revolution to give us energy we want inexpensively and carbon free," he said during his presentation, which was Webcast. (Click for PDF of slides.) "I think time is running out."The stimulus package provided a one-time investment bulge in a range of fields, including research to invent new technologies and loan guarantees to scale up existing products. Before the stimulus, though, the percentage of money dedicated to energy research and development has trended down since 1979, Chu said.He said there are risks in the status quo which were detailed in a report called Business Plan for America's Future which was authored by business leaders including Bill Gates, venture capital investor John Doerr, GE CEO Jeff Immelt, and former Lockheed Martin CEO Norman Augustine. The report said there are many benefits to moving to a cleaner energy system in the U.S., including public health, protection from climate change, and cleaner air, but none of these are recognized by the free market. Also, the scale of investment required in new energy technologies in beyond the scope of commercial companies, which is why the government should fund research and development.Cutting research and development during the a slow economic period is "like removing an engine from an overloaded aircraft," Chu said, quoting former Lockheed Martin CEO Augustine.Chu said the Energy Department has established two new research channels: ARPA-E, which is focused on breakthrough technology research within three to five years, and Energy Innovation Hubs, where larger groups of people at universities focus on specific areas, such as bio energy and building efficiency, for several years. One lesson that the U.S. can learn from China is the importance of long-term planning and investment, Chu said. The ARPA-E program, which is taking on challenges such as cheap electric-car batteries capable of a 500-mile range, could suffer from short-term policies. Although it was created as an agency a few years ago, it was first funded through the stimulus package and it is now in danger of not being renewed. He added that the U.S. can collaborate with China and India in development and testing out new energy technologies. Continuing energy-related policies pursued by the Obama administration faces a tougher time after the November elections where Republicans gained control of the House. But even politicians who are skeptical of climate change should recognize that investing in green-technology research and development is an economic decision, he said. "I am hoping that the United States can recognize the economic opportunity that virtually all the western European companies have recognized, that countries in Asia have recognized, and that developing countries have recognized," he said. "I am an optimist we will wake up and seize the opportunity...The U.S. still has the greatest innovation engine in the world."

0 Vote(s)

World of WarCraft Cataclysm had stellar sales in its first month, topping 4.7 million units sold for the expansion to what was already the world&'s most lucrative online game. It&'s further proof that video game launches have become like premieres of Hollywood blockbusters, both in the dollars consumer spend and the time they devote to the product. Cataclysm sold well even though Call of Duty Black Ops was selling at the same time and raking in $1 billion in a month. At $40 apiece, the expansion generated an estimated $188 million in retail sales in its first month. Try to find a movie that has done that &8212' and that keeps paying off an annuity to its creators &8212' and you won&'t find many.Blizzard Entertainment, publisher of the game and a division of Activision Blizzard, launched the game on a larger scale this time, simultaneously releasing the game in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on Dec. 7. It followed up with releases in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau on Dec. 9.On the first day, Cataclysm&'s sales topped 3.3 million sold. By comparison,World of WarCraft&'s previous expansion pack Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million units on its first day in 2008 and The Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million units on its first day in 2007.The growing popularity of World of WarCraft is all the more amazing because it still charges a subscription fee of $15 a month in most regions. At the same time, a sea of free-to-play games have grown up around it. Those games offer free play and then let users pay real money for virtual goods. Many games, such as Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons Online, have attempted to turn around their sliding subscription revenue by shifting to free-to-play.Blizzard managed to stoke demand with a huge makeover, which took the form of a cataclysmic disaster which tore the older World of WarCraft landscape apart under the auspices of the arrival of the dragon god Deathwing. Blizzard also introduced thousands of new quests, new lands, and new races to play, said Mike Morhaime, chief executive of Blizzard.Prior to the launch of Cataclysm, World of WarCraft&'s subscriber base was 12 million global players. At $15 a month, those players generate more than $1 billion a year in revenue. That doesn&'t come for free: The company puts hundreds of developers to work on the game. But it can easily afford the expense for a media property that keeps on giving.Next Story: Smartphone owners paid less for apps in 2010 Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: ECOtality raises $10 million from ABB, Viridity raises second roundPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Dean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Vimeo pitches itself as a YouTube alternative that features more original, high-quality content. Today the company is unveiling a new initiative that could make Vimeoa4a4s videos even better, as well as attract a new audience of aspiring filmmakers.Titled a4AVimeo Video Schoola4, the project involves more than 800 video lessons and tutorials covering different aspects of filmmaking. Therea4a4s a Video 101 series created by the Vimeo team, which covers the basic steps of creating a film, like choosing the right camera and simple editing techniques. Therea4a4s also a a4ADSLR Basicsa4 series created with videographer Philip Bloom, which talks about how to use DSLR cameras. And this effort isna4a4t just about creating new videos, said Blake Whitman, Vimeoa4a4s director of community and product. In fact, it was largely a response to behavior that was happening on the site already, where users would see a video that used a cool shooting or editing technique, so they posted comments asking how it was done. In response, filmmakers sometimes created behind-the-scenes tutorials showing how they achieved specific effects. With Video School, Vimeo highlights those tutorials, both in a special Video School section on the website, and with links strewn alongside relevant videos. This isna4a4t the first effort from Vimeo (which is owned by online conglomerate IAC) to develop its filmmaking community. It also held its first video festival and awards earlier this year.Next Story: Is Yahoo about to kill Delicious Previous Story: Microsoft jams JavaScript from partners in its Hotmail messagesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Vimeo Video SchoolCompanies: Iac, VimeoPeople: Blake Whitman Tags: Vimeo Video SchoolCompanies: Iac, VimeoPeople: Blake WhitmanAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Reasonable people understand this by now: environmentalists aren&'t all tree hugging vegetarians with unwashed hair a4" not that there&'s anything wrong with that a4" and tech enthusiasts aren&'t all oblivious to the burgeoning problems of energy consumption and e-waste. Still, it&'s tough to shop online for geeks who want to be environmentally responsible, and nouveau hippies who covet gadgets. Why It&'s easy to find green gifts in the beauty, fashion, home or kids category. Many retail websites, however, bury their great green electronics pages rather than highlighting them, and making them easy to find from the homepage. We&'re looking at you, Target, Walmart, Sears and BestBuy, sites that don&'t have green tech or eco-friendly sections or search filters that make it easy to find the water-saving, solar, LED and more earth friendly tech items they carry.Maybe big retailers don&'t want to come off too specialized, or maybe they&'re worried about implying other products they sell, outside of a special &''eco&'' section, are somehow environmentally wasteful. Let&'s admit it. Some of those electronics are wasteful. A wino, or possibly an arthritic sommelier could make the electric corkscrew worth its weight in rare earth metals. But who really needs a portable watermelon cooler Gift shoppers can&'t rely on the media&'s picks entirely, either. Several guides have recommended stuff this season that&'s either utilitarian, or expensive enough to wilt mistletoe.Treehugger suggested a $670 eMeter that measures a users&' energy consumption at home. Inhabitat suggested a water clock that duplicates time-keeping features of a basic mobile phonea4" but hey, it runs on lemon water so it&'s &''eco.&'' The biggest stinker was NetworkWorld&'s recommendation to give the automatic, electric composter as a gift. Who&'s naughty enough to get that one (It&'s not even solar-powered!)The most environmentally friendly gifts one can give are probably not things a4" shipped from far away, delivered by diesel trucks, destined for the landfill a4" but digital goods, like a must-read e-book or a membership to a streaming video site. We know.Digital goods lack that whole je ne sais quoi of handing a loved one something they can tear open. Hopefully, it&'s wrapped in 100% recycled and recyclable paper. We suggest using the comics sectiona4" save a tree and a little piece of the print news business. Here at TechCrunch, we found a six-pack of sites that either specialize in, or have designated sections and great search filters for what we call green tech. These should help you find sustainable gifts for tech heads that are actually worth coveting, and should arrive in time for Christmas if ordered on or before December 15th. 1. Think Geek&'s Power &amp' Eco-Friendly section features a boat load of solar chargers, and LED lighting. The refillable, chemicals free air horn could delight a sports fan who&'s into green tech, too. 2. GoGreenSolar.com is a specialty store with products to please home improvement and gardening enthusiasts, from a solar power generating system that doubles as a back yard cabana (about $10,000) to efficient LED grow lights for budding botanists ($30 and up). 3. Amazon.com has a special Amazon Green section. It&'s not featured in home page navigation, but a quick search on the word &''green&'' leads users there. The special section&'s Green Electronics category features everything from energy-efficient laptops and netbooks to information on recycling the old to make way for the new. 4. The Overstock.com electronics section includes quick links to &''Made in the U.S.A.&'' gadgets, and &''Refurbished&'' items. Refurbishing is recycling, which makes it automatically green. Buying locally produced anything tends to eliminate emissions generated in shipping from far away. The United States also has stricter environmental regulations than China and other exporters. 5. 21st Century Goods, a specialty retailer focused on &''off-the-grid&'' lifestyles, offers plenty of cute eco-friendly gadgets, from hand-cranked mini-USB device chargers ($14) to solar-powered flag pole lights that would make a good present for a proud patriot ($60-$130).6. Dont&' let the yoga mats scare you at Gaiam. The sustainable web store also sells: recyclable water filters for home chefs and health nuts who crave pure hydration' energy-efficient hair dryers for the style addicted, and for the outdoor adventurer, a hand-operated, snake bite and insect poison extractor (a weird and inspiring stocking stuffer). Also worth noting: If you have a giftee with a guilty conscience but a steady jones for Apple products Belgrave Trust sells a $10 sticker that represents carbon offsets to counter the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists estimate are produced by the manufacture and use of one of Apple&'s laptops or iPads over its lifetime. (image above)For gift givers across the pond, this site delivers eco-gadgets to the Euro-paying market: EthicalSuperStore.com.
About a month ago, we noted that LeWeb would be getting a bit more TechCrunch flavor this year. For the seventh iteration of the popular tech conference based in Paris, France, organizers&nbsp'Geraldine and Loic Le Meur decided to make their startup competition a bit more like a mini-TechCrunch Disrupt. That is, of the 16 startups launching, 3 will get time on the big stage to present in front of everyone and a winner will be chosen. And that won&'t be the only TechCrunch influence felt.As you can see on the just-released program for LeWeb &'10, TechCrunch names are all over the agenda.&nbsp'A group of us are slated to interview some of the big names in tech on stage during the two-day conference, which takes place on December 8 and 9 this year. And there seem to be a range of other interesting talks and panels as well.A taste of the highlights:Leaders from Google, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Mozilla, Foursquare, WordPress, EA, MySpace, UStream, Evernote, Microsoft, PayPal, Nokia, RIM, and more on stage. You can learn about how to get your company acquired (with people from Microsoft and Twitter). You can learn about how to create a top mobile game (with the CEO behind the company responsible for Angry Birds). You can hear about innovation in other parts of the world, such as Japan (with the CEO of&nbsp'DeNA).You can hear about where the media is heading (with people from CNN and Techmeme).A partner at DST will talk about investing hundreds of millions in Zynga and Facebook. You can learn about the building of a solar pane plane.Howard Lindzon, Gary Vaynerchuk, Leo Laporte, Dave McClure, Yossi Vardi, Dave Morin, and more will all be on hand for talks. And, of course, the Disrupt-like startup competition finals with be hosted by our own&nbsp'Michael Arrington and August Capital partner David Hornik. For a longer intro, be sure to check out Loic and Geraldine&'s full rundown in the video below.
Disney&'s top video game chief Graham Hopper just announced to the company&'s employees that he is resigning from the division that he ran for more than eight years.Disney did not give a reason for the departure. But it&'s clear that the video game industry is going through a lot of disruptions as social and mobile games join console and PC games as the drivers of growth. Executive departures in this context aren&'t that surprising.Hopper is leaving his job as general manager of Disney Interactive Studios, which has seen huge investments and big title launches in recent years. Its upcoming holiday title, Tron Evolution, is a companion video game for Disney&'s big holiday movie, Tron Legacy. Hopper was able to spearhead the development of such titles. Back when Hopper took over, Disney didn&'t have much credibility in video games.Over the years, Hopper&'s goal was to triple Disney&'s revenues and its investment in video games, building a large collection of internal game studios to make a wide variety of games. But Disney&'s game business went through a lot of changes recently. Disney bought Tapulous, the maker of iPhone music games, for an estimated $33 million. It also bought social game company Playdom for as much as $760 million to break into the market for social games on Facebook and MySpace. In a surprise move, Playdom chief executive John Pleasants became the co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, overseeing the properties Disney acquired.Pleasants thus became Hopper&'s boss while Hopper&'s previous boss, Steven Wadsworth, resigned in September. Now Pleasants will take charge of Hopper&'s responsibilities as head of the game studios. It seems evident that Disney is unifying its game and internet properties under one executive. It probably didn&'t help that Disney&'s game business was losing money, despite its heavy investment in games.Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger discussed the change that placed Pleasants in charge of the Interactive Media Group and its game division in a recent call with analysts.&''By putting John Pleasants in to run games, not only will he focus on turning those businesses into profitability but [he'll focus on] diversifying our presence in the business, so wea4a4re not reliant on one platform thata4a4s obviously facing challenges,&'' he said. &''Ita4a4s our goal not only to be profitable, but obviously to get there by shifting our investment.&''Here&'s the complete resignation memo from Hopper below:Dear friends and colleagues,It seems like yesterday I was given the wonderful opportunity to lead the Disney Interactive Studios team and build a 21st century games business worthy of the Disney brand. Since taking on the challenge, I discovered we all enjoy a shared passion for great games, a vigorous creative environment and working together as a collective team which has made every day here worthwhile. After more than eight years at DIS and 19 years at Disney, the time has come for me to move on from the company and set my sights on new horizons. During December I will transition my responsibilities to DIMGa4a4s co-president, John Pleasants, who will continue to manage and oversee DIMGa4a4s collective gaming strategy. As I look back, I am so proud of what wea4a4ve accomplished. Our global games business has grown dramatically, we continue to attract and develop some of the best creative talent in the industry, we create award-winning products, and wea4a4ve reached our target to become a top-five publisher on Nintendo platforms. This was all accomplished by the hard work of every DIS employee and a strong collective belief in the vision we set out to execute on many years ago. We have put Disney on the map in video games, and for that, we should all be extremely proud. As we ship our upcoming titles Disney Epic Mickey and TRON: Evolution, we can be confident that we continue to create, market and deliver high-quality, best-in-class games that both entertain and delight players. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you and I wish you much success.GrahamNext Story: The latest in the hunt for HP&'s CEO: Pssst.
This is a guest post from Shaherose Charania, founder and chief executive of Women 2.0, a social venture that aims to increase the number of female founders of technology startups. Ms. Charania previously served as the director of product management at bothJAJAH (acquired by Telefonica/O2) and Talenthouse, and as a managing partner at Opinno.Women 2.0 is not an organization just for womena4" we created the name when some colleagues and I went to the Web 2.0 Expo conference in 2006 and asked, &''Where are the women in the web 2.0 movement&'' We didn&'t see them represented there. Women 2.0 is more about diversity, inclusion, technology and startups that are likely to create jobs and wealth, and otherwise improve our lives and work. We have a clear goal of advancing high-growth businesses and innovation in technology. Last night, as part of our Women 2.0 Startup Competition Pitch 2010, we heard pitches from an eclectic group of tech startups with female founders. Women were definitely represented. The eventa4" which was organized end to end by my co-founder Angie Changa4" took place at Twilio&'s headquarters in San Francisco. Finalists demoed everything from mobile payments, language learning and expense tracking apps, to a tween social network and waste to industrial products technology.Teams that qualify for our competition include at least one female co-founder. She doesn&'t have to be the chief executive, but that is what we saw in more than 80% of the teams this year. Competitors must also be in a beta stage with their technology. We excluded startups that had already obtained more than $2 million in funding. The competition drew 130 qualified applicants this year. Business ideas poured in from around the world. We had applicants from New Zealand, Turkey, Korea, Germany, Canada, Russia, Israel, Brazil, the U.K. and of course the U.S. Given the volume of strong applications we received, we decided to give out three industry awards for web, mobile, and cleantech pitches. Our judges were investor and tech all-stars: Cindi Choi (SunPower), Cynthia Ringo (DBL Investors), David Weekly (PB Works), Gautam Gupta (General Catalyst Partners), Janice Roberts (Mayfield Fund), Julia Hartz (Eventbrite), Maria Kermath (AT&amp'T Interactive), Naval Ravikant (Angelist) and Rachel Pike (Draper Fisher Jurvetson). The cleantech category winners (photo, left) won a meeting with angel investor and social innovator, Esther Dyson. Judges picked Biolumber. Cofounder Kristin Kaune explained&nbsp'that her company takes plastic headed for the landfills and makes it into &''lumber&'' that is as light as wood, and as strong as steel. Biolumber could reduce landfill waste significantly, I think. Our web prize went to a company called Apply In The Sky, co-founded by Emily Chiu and Chiara Piccinotti (photo, below right). They are trying to make the process of applying for business school easier on the applicants, they said. The team earned a meeting with Mike Maples Floodgate co-founder, serial entrepreneur and investor. I think Apply In The Sky is in a space that needs serious help. No company that I&'ve seen is tackling the application process for b-schools, specifically. They&'ve designed a nice, lightweight application for a very intense process. I think they&'ll succeed with strong outreach to future MBA students. PrePay Nation took our mobile industry prize. The company provides a payment service for users of basic feature phones. They take advantage of existing transaction technology that works to track minutes or allow you to buy more on these phones. Rather than reinventing the wheel, they&'re using a top up approach that helps people transfer money to each other, or deliver micro-payments without the expenses and complexities of a wire transfer or money order. Women 2.0&8242's Pitch director Aihui Ong told me she thinks PrePay Nation has a huge market opportunity with American immigrants who are predominantly users of basic feature phones. An investor who judged the mobile track, Gautam Gupta from General Catalyst Partners, told me Prepay Nation seemed promising to him because the company leverages several trends in the mobile ecosystem to provide their unique remittance service. The company&'s cofounder Jessica Bishop (in photo below) says PrePay Nation in 2011 should grow its business in North America, while expanding into the Middle East, Europe and Australia, and developing further integrations with mobile operators.I was personally excited to see Women 2.0 teams thinking in a geographically broad way about their market opportunities, and including team members from other parts of the world. Many teams had intergenerational founders, with men and women alike. You would not expect that from reading the constant press on the collegiate genesis of Facebook. But there is another technology startup reality. Women 2.0 startups are not like Facebook, but I mean that in a good way.Women from all over the world, and all ages are starting tech companies, and they don&'t exclude men. It&'s not just consumer web or healthcare, but every industrya4" we are thrilled to be among the first to see and review their technologies, and generally support their growth. In the past three years of Women 2.0 Pitch Nights, we had to go home after celebrating to prepare meeting agendas or product requirements for our &''day jobs&'' at Silicon Valley startups. This year was a different experience for me and my co-founders. Today, we&'re happy to announce that The Kauffman Foundation is giving Women 2.0 a $50,000 sponsorship for our next six months of programs and events. The foundation normally funds non-profits, but we operate as a for-profit, for-good entity which makes us especially grateful for their support. With the funding, we&'re getting ready for our 2010 Founder Labs. It&'s Women 2.0&8242's pre-incubator program for aspiring entrepreneurs who aren&'t ready to quit their day jobs. Once they&'ve created a minimum viable product over five weeks at Founder Labs, we hope they will, however, strike out on their own.
Intel said today that a new category of &''micro servers&'' is growing fast as power efficiency and density of computing rise to the forefront. As a result, Intel wants to introduce standards to the market to foster its growth. The world&'s largest chip maker normally designs server chips to run as fast as they can within a given power level so that it can be used in a traditional board and rack configuration within a data center. But the micro servers &8212' created by companies such as SeaMicro (server pictured right) &8212' try to pack a lot more single-chip boards into a smaller space with much lower power levels and asmaller overall footprint. If these micro servers take off, Intel may be able to stave off low-power rivals such as ARM from taking a chunk of the server business. These micro servers are a new vector for innovation in servers and Intel wants to foster their growth. The question is whether a standard will slow the market down or broaden it so that lots of companies can make more money in the market.Intel expects that micro servers could become 10 percent of the total server market in the next four to five years.Boyd Davis, general manager of Intel&'s Data Center Group, said that Intel plans to create micro server chips that consume as little as 10 watts by 2012. Today, Intel&'s Xeon server chips run at 45 or 30 watts. In the coming months, it will offer a 20-watt Xeon chip and a 10-watt Atom chip designed for servers. The micro server vendors have created &''density-optimized&'' servers, or those with many small one-socket servers that share a chassis, fans, and switching to get higher efficiency and density (or more processors in a given space). They can get four times as many servers per rack, run on fewer fans and power supplies, and can still run a full range of single-processor applications. The idea is that certain applications will work better on many low-power dense servers than on a handful of more powerful but power-hungry servers. SuperMicro and SeaMicro have introduced non-standard machines in the recent past. But Dell, Tyan, Quanta Computer and Intel are moving toward standard modules.Intel said that the micro servers will be appealing to web site hosting companies that have lots of customers with relatively low-traffic web sites. The company says that developers will be able to analyze their softwrae running on a range of Intel-baesd micro servers in a new Intel Micro Server Evaluation Lab.The micro servers are not unlike low-power blade servers launched years ago. But at the low end of the market, Intel said there is enough computing power to do the job right.SeaMicro uses 32-bit and 64-bit Atom processors in its small servers today. It can cram 256 dual-core Atom processors in a box that is just a quarter the size of a traditional rack, and it uses a quarter of the typical energy.SeaMicro feels that the opportunity for low-power, purpose-optimized servers is well above the 10 percent of the total server market in the four to five year timeframe that Intel has suggested, said John Turk, vice president of operations at SeaMicro. But he said this announcement from Intel recognizes there is real opportunity. SeaMicro is not working with Intel on the standards, as it naturally feels it has an advantage now. But it is encouraged that Intel is pushing for innovation in the micro server market. In the big picture, Intel probably loves the fact that SeaMicro is an ally against ARM. Andrew Feldman, chief executive of SeaMicro, said in an interview that the fact that Intel has put an Atom chip on its server roadmap is a huge recognition of the fact that micro servers are a good idea and that Intel is serious about heading off a threat from ARM. That threat from ARM isn&'t imminent, but it will likely come.&''These are all good steps,&'' Feldman said.Intel&'s own interest is in seeing lots of server vendors selling the best possible micro servers. So Intel is essentially motivated to help SeaMicro&'s server competitors. It&'s a combination of competition and cooperation.Gio Coglitore, director of Facebook Labs, said on the call, &''We aren&'t trying to cram a desktop processor into a server anymore.&''Coglitore said that Facebook has tested micro servers and believes that deployment will happen in the 2011 and 2012 time frame.Next Story: Google moves forward with NFC mobile payment tests while Apple backs down Previous Story: Flickr head of service announces his departure from YahooPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Atom, micro servers, XeonCompanies: Dell, Intel, SeaMicro, SuperMicro, TyanPeople: Boyd Davis Tags: Atom, micro servers, XeonCompanies: Dell, Intel, SeaMicro, SuperMicro, TyanPeople: Boyd DavisDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
