Duke Nukem Forever is coming on May 3.(Credit:2K Games)Nearly 14 years since it was first announced, Duke Nukem Forever finally has a ship date that--at least most hope--2K Games will stick to.The publisher announced today that its long-awaited title will be landing in North America on May 3. It will hit store shelves internationally on May 6. The game will be available on theXbox 360,PlayStation 3, and PC.Duke Nukem Forever players will control the brash character as he attempts to save the world against "pig cops, alien shrink rays, and enormous alien bosses." Following in its tradition, Duke Nukem Forever will be aimed at adult audiences. According to 2K Games, the title will allow users to "read adult magazines [and] draw crude messages on whiteboards," among many other exploits. As one might expect, the game has a Mature rating. The very fact that Duke Nukem Forever is even coming to store shelves anytime soon is something that many thought would never happen. The title was first announced in April 1997 as a followup to the popular Duke Nukem 3D. The game was initially supposed to be released in 1998. However, that year, the game was delayed after its developer, 3D Realms, decided to switch from the Quake II game engine to the Unreal engine. As the 1990s came to a close and a new millennium started without the release of Duke Nukem Forever in sight, many believed the title would never launch. However, every so often over the past 10 years, gamers heard some updates about the title, giving fans hope and critics even more opportunity to pan the game for its unprecedented delays. Finally, last year, 2K Games announced that Duke Nukem Forever would be launching. The company said that Gearbox Software was developing the title, taking over from 3D Realms. Now that a release date has been announced, the Duke Nukem Forever saga is seemingly coming to a close. And not even the game's developer can believe it."When I said goodbye to 3D Realms and the original Duke Nukem 3D team in 1997 and soon after founded Gearbox Software, I never in my wildest dreams imagined that a day like today would come," Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford said in a statement. "Today I am proud, humbled and even astounded to announce that the day is coming at last for all gamers to be a part of video game history: Duke Nukem Forever will launch worldwide this May."It's about time.

0 Vote(s)

Tens of thousands of reportedly hacked iTunes accounts have been found on Chinese auction site Taobao, but the company claims it is unable to take action unless there are direct complaints, according to news reports. The Global Times reported last week that as many as 50,000 illegally obtained iTunes accounts were sold on China's biggest consumer auction site. The Beijing-based newspaper also interviewed a seller who admitted the accounts were hacked but did not reveal how they were obtained.Taobao, however, said that to protect its users, it would not be taking action until it has received a formal request. In a statement carried by BBC, the company said: "We take all reasonable and necessary measures to protect the rights of consumers who use Taobao, of our sellers and of third-parties. Until we receive a valid takedown request, we cannot take action."Read more of "Chinese auction site touts hacked iTunes accounts" at ZDNet Asia.

0 Vote(s)

The Philips BDP7580 is due out in April for $499.99.(Credit:David Carnoy/CNET)LAS VEGAS--If you always wished you had a Blu-ray player equipped with wireless HDMI to stream video from across the room to a wall-mounted TV, Philips has a new solution: the BDP7580 wireless HDMI Blu-ray player.Due out in April with a price tag of $499.99, the BDP7580 offers 3D playback, NetTV, Netflix, and Blockbuster streaming, as well as Philips MediaConnect, which allows you to stream content from your PC to your TV via a Wi-Fi connection. NetTV is Philips' integrated Internet TV feature that offers a built-in browser for accessing standard Web sites, including Facebook and Twitter. The Vudu video streaming service is also available as part of NetTV. Philips was showing the BDP7580 in action at a hotel suite here atCES and we watched some 3D content (that's why the picture on the screen looks blurry--because it's in 3D). All in all, it seemed to work well without any hiccups, and while the $500 price tag is pretty high, it's not as outrageous as what some of the earlier wireless HDMI options cost.

0 Vote(s)

Forrester Research just released a new report on mobile augmented reality (AR) that says few companies are delivering &''real&'' augmented reality (AR) today.Augmented reality overlays digital information over your view of the physical world in a mobile device&'s camera view, as pictured left. It currently works by using a combination of the mobile phonea4a4s camera, compass, GPS data and other sensors to identify objects in the field of view, retrieve relevant data and overlay that data over the camera view. For example, you could point your camera at a building to get information about apartments for sale or the history of the building. The Forrester report says that AR requires object recognition on the mobile device itself as well as 3D rendering to superimpose images on the real world and that only a few companies like Metaio and Total Immersion provide this. Visual search like Google Goggles and GPS browser-based experiences such as that provided by Layar don&'t meet that definition of AR.Forrester also concludes that AR isnot yet scalable or mature. VentureBeat highlighted some of the problems (and possible solutions) with mobile AR technology at the start of 2010.Thus far, few consumers are using the technology. Layar is ahead of the pack with 1 million active users, while Metaioa4a4s Junaio mobile AR solution has been downloaded500,000 times.Mobile AR will merge with other technologies like location-based services, visual search, image and facial recognition and barcodes, predicts Forrester. In fact this already started to happen in 2010. In February we saw an application called Recognizr which combined facial recognition with AR to recognize people and pull up profile information. Both companies involved in Recognizr were acquired in 2010, facial recognition companyPolar Rose by Apple and interface specialists TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) by Blackberry-makers RIM. Metaio combined visual object search with AR so you can point your camera at everyday objects and get information about them. More recently, we saw the wonderfully useful WordLens which translates Spanish text to English (and vice versa) in the camera view in real time.In spite of these provisos, Forrester is optimistic on the future of mobile AR and expects more blue chip companies to join the AR fray in 2010. Currently the space is dominated by startups. The report points out thatQualcomm opened an AR research center. And eBay classifieds recently partnered with Metaio.Funding for mobile AR companies in 2010 went mainly to Layar (which did two rounds, 3.4 million in February and 14 million in December) and gaming companies like Tonchidot which received 12 million.Next Story: The best and worst in mobile 2010: It&'s all about Apple and Android Previous Story: Game companies raise record $1.05B in 2010, up 58 percentPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: augmented reality, visual searchCompanies: Forrester, layar, Metaio, Qualcomm, Total Immersion Tags: augmented reality, visual searchCompanies: Forrester, layar, Metaio, Qualcomm, Total ImmersionCiara Byrne is a full time techie and part-time writer.
A startup called Affectiva said that it wants to change the way advertisers and researchers judge the effectiveness of an ad. With its upcoming Affdex service, companies should be able to use consumersa4a4 webcams to record their faces as they watch a video. Then the company can measure the response &8212' both the emotions consumers&' felt and how strongly they felt them.Waltham, Massachusetts-based Affectiva spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. The company has already raised $2 million in funding from its founders and Lingfield AB, and it just won a $650,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.Affectiva has one product available now &8212' Q Sensor, a wearable device for measuring emotions. But co-founder Rana el Kaliouby said that the NSF grant will help the company launch Affdex as an online service, which could be used much more broadly. The goal, she said, is to a4Ademocratize market researcha4, making it possible for a small company to quickly and affordably test their content on a large group of consumers. For example, if you wanted to create a promotional video for your company, you could test out an early version on Affdex to see if consumers responded positively.Without Affdex, this kind of pre-release testing is usually performed in a lab, and the emotional analysis required a4Apainstakinga4, frame-by-frame analysis of video footage, el Kaliouby said.Therea4a4s at least one other startup interested in this kind of analysis &8212' Affective Interfaces, which launched in fall 2009. Despite the similar names and concepts, el Kaliouby said the two companies are taking different approaches. Affectiva can measure more complex emotions, like confusion, she said. You can see can see a simplified demo version of the Affdex technology here.
DEMO Fall 2010 alumnus Bump.com, a social network that links people through their car license plates, has raised more than $1 million in its second round of funding, VentureBeat has learned. As the DEMO Spring 2011 conference wraps up, Bump.com&'s funding news demonstrates how the event, which VentureBeat coproduces with tech publisher, IDG, often sees graduates move on to greater and greater business success.CEO Mitch Thrower wouldna4a4t disclose exactly how much the company raised in its Series B-1 funding round, but said the round was oversubscribed a4"meaning there was more offers for funding than Bump.com was willing to take from investors. The round was closed in a little more than two weeks, Thrower said. (The service is not to be confused with Bump, a content-sharing application for the iPhone.)Bump.com users take a picture of a license plate and pass a message along through the Bump.com application. If the driver of the other car has registered their license plate with Bump.com, he or she will receive a text message or an email message. They can decide from there whether they want to respond. Drivers spend more than five years in their cars honking at each other when they could be actually communicating with each other, Thrower said. There are a lot of applications outside of the social networking aspect as well. There are billboards in Los Angeles that track more than 250,000 license plates every day. The company is also setting up shop at the Coachella music festival in April a4"where it will track license plates as they enter the music festival and deliver discounts to songs played by bands at Coachella.Thata4a4s a lot of license plates and data. So the company works on Amazona4a4s AWS cloud servers instead of running the service on in-house servers. The company makes money by supplying users with a subscription similar to AAA a4"it includes free towing and discounts to some other companies. Around 7 to 10 percent of users that claim their license plate on Bump.com end up converting to paid users, Thrower said.Bump.com also partners with other companies to help deliver better advertising data. Partners, for example, might ask how many motorcycle riders pass through a part of the freeway in a given part of the day a4"and Bump.com can deliver that kind of information. The actual site is launching a closed beta at the South by Southwest music festival in Texas later this month. Bump.com has raised $1.1 million from an initial funding round led by angels and money from the founders and employees. Bump.com was founded in 2009. The companya4a4s first round of funding, which closed before it presented at the DEMO Fall 2010 conference, was also oversubscribed.Next Story: DEMO: MobileNation lets anyone become a mobile app developer Previous Story: DEMO: JetStreamHD lets you stream media to your iPad with no hasslePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: driving, license plate, social networking Tags: driving, license plate, social networkingMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
