(Credit:USPTO)A new Apple patent filing unearthed by Patently Apple points at an interesting prospect for productivity hounds on theiPad: bringing the multi-desktop "Spaces" feature found inMac OS X to the realm of the touch-screentablet. Called "device, method, and graphical user interface for manipulating workspace views," the 2009 application, which went live on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's site yesterday, describes a device with a touch screen that has "a plurality of workspace views." When enabled, the idea is to let users jump around to their various screens with finger gestures, turning the 10-inch screen into a just a window of a larger work space. The various toggles for surfing around these work spaces are described as gestures, including pinching in various parts of the screen as well as a five-finger tap and pinch.Similar gestures appeared, and still grace the iPad in the form of a feature that had been made available to developers since an early beta of iOS 4.3. Apple had experimented with allowing users to not only jump back to the home screen with a five-finger pinch, but also pull up the multitasking bar with a four-fingered swipe, and even jump between open applications by swiping multiple fingers across the screen. This functionality never made it to the build of iOS 4.3 that went out to users, though can still be enabled by marking the iPad as a development device within Apple's Xcode software. Some developers with applications that made use of multi-finger gestures complained that the feature could send finger-happy users skipping off to another application by mistake. What's interesting about this patent is that it's not just single applications that are being described as taking up the whole view, it's full on desktop work spaces. Patently Apple suggests this is Apple considering bringing the full version of Mac OS X to a tablet, versus the company's iOS software based on the patent's image section alone, which depicts OS X screenshots in the examples. The other curious tidbit to be gleaned from the application is that Apple is exploring gestures that can be assigned to specific parts of the screen. This adds an extra layer of complexity to what users need to learn, but extends some of the gestures used on tablets in a similar fashion to what the company has done on the multitouch trackpads found on MacBooks and with its Magic Trackpad accessory. The important thing to point out here is that this is just a patent application, and is in no way a surefire bet that the company plans to bring the functionality to existing devices. Even so, it does give a hint at some of the additional things the company's Mac OS and iOS platforms can share with one another, something that's going to be of keen interest to users of both in the run-up to 10.7 Lion and the next major version of iOS, the latter of which is expected to be unveiled at Apple's WWDC event in June.

0 Vote(s)

Google is the world's most valuable brand, according to a brand valuation company's list of the top 500 global brands.Assigning a dollar amount to Google's brand, BrandFinance raised the search giant's value to $44.2 billion this year, up 23 percent from $36 billion last year.Google often embarks on ventures that aren't necessarily commercial but have a positive impact on its brand rating (AAA+), which is the highest in the list, according to BrandFinance. One example includes Google's online services designed to help rescue efforts after the natural disasters in New Zealand and Japan. To determine the world's top brands, BrandFinance pulls together different financial and business criteria and assigns benchmarking scores to calculate the value of a brand. This year's rankings were based on data taken on December 31 of last year.Following Google on the list was Microsoft with a brand value of $42.8 billion, up from $33.6 billion in 2010. In boosting Microsoft to second place from fifth place, BrandFinance pointed toWindows 7 and Bing, which both debuted in 2009 and have garnered generally positive reviews since.Other tech players at the top of the rankings include IBM in fourth place and British mobile carrier Vodafone in fifth. But one major company that shot up in the ranks was Apple.Moving to No. 8 on the list from No. 20 last year, Apple's brand value increased by 45 percent to $29.5 billion due in large part to the "unrivaled loyalty and affection" that the company commands within its sector, BrandFinance said.Nokia was one tech company that didn't fair as well. Struggling in the smartphone market due to competition from Apple and Android, Nokia saw its brand value drop to $9.6 billion from $19.8 billion last year. Like other industry watchers, BrandFinance is waiting to see if Nokia's new deal with Microsoft can help revive its standing. With the surge in social networking, Facebook joined the BrandFinance Global 500 list for the first time with a value of $3.7 billion based on the brand's popularity and huge growth in customers.''The rise of the technology brands has been expected for some time, although Nokia's fall shows that it is tough to stay at the forefront of such a dynamic industry," BrandFinance CEO David Haigh said in a statement. "Over the last couple of years, we have found that, across many leading companies, senior management are increasingly using brand valuation dashboards to monitor the health of their brands throughout the year in order to make better informed strategic marketing decisions. And in a nod to Apple's brand, the Business Journals today named the company its Grand Award winner in its annual American Brand Excellence Awards. Now in its eight year, the awards recognize brands that best meet the needs of small and mid-sized businesses."Apple has become the premier business brand, and as the leader of thetablet category with theiPad, Apple is redefining how we work," Godfrey Phillips, VP of Research for The Business Journals, said in a statement. "Our study (which comes out on Monday) found that nine percent of business owners currently use an iPad for business." Apple also was the top winner in the technology area, while Verizon Wireless was the top brand in the telecommunications category and Staples was No. 1 among retailers. "The American Brand Excellence Awards are unique in that they represent how business owners and managers feel about the companies that best support their businesses and help them succeed," Michael Olivieri, Chief Revenue Officer of American City Business Journals, said in a statement.

0 Vote(s)

Facebook&39's new Like presentation, along with the older Recommend presentation.(Credit:Screenshot by Steven Musil/CNET)Is Facebook getting ready to show its Share button the doorThe social-networking giant recently released an update that adds Share button functionality to the Like button, perhaps presaging the phasing out of the Share button. When a Facebook user clicks the Like or Recommend button on a third-party site, a full feed story with headline, blurb, and thumbnail is generated on the user's wall. Users will also have the option of commenting on it.Previously, unless third-party publishers chose the Like with Comment version of the button for their site, users got only a link to the story in their recent activity section on their wall. Now the Like, Share, and Recommend buttons will all generate the full story with headline, blurb, and thumbnail. The change should drive more referral traffic to third-party sites and perhaps reduce user confusion over how the buttons work. But because the content will now be more prominent on user's walls, some may be more reluctant to click the Like button. Facebook is apparently no longer supporting development of the Share button, having removed it from the developers documentation section of the site, and a search for Facebook Share in the developers section redirects to the Like button documentation page. Facebook representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

Sifteo cubes, which are scheduled to go on sale this Fall, interact with each other wirelessly.(Credit:Sifteo)LAS VEGAS--After being demonstrated as a concept almost two years ago at the TED conference, Sifteo cubes are gradually making their way toward becoming an actual shipping product.Today, as the fledgling company got ready to demo the product at CES, it announced that it would soon be launching an Early Access Program that would give consumers the opportunity to buy its much-anticipated interactive cubes at a discounted price before they go on sale nationally in the fall.Just what are Sifteo cubes Well, that's a little difficult to explain, but they're basically a form of digital interactive tiles or blocks that respond to each other wirelessly. Think of them as 21st century dominoes.Sifteo co-founders David Merrill and Jeevan Kalanithi, who first came up with the prototype for the cubes when studying human-computer interaction at the MIT Media Lab, say that "Sifteo cubes are a brand new way to play games using wireless 1.5-inch blocks with full-color screens that respond to motion and start interacting with the player and each other, as soon as they are picked up and moved around."To play with Sifteo cubes, you have to first install Sifteo's software (Mac or Windows) onto an Internet-connected computer and then buy games and apps from Sifteo's online library, which is accessible through the software. The games are then downloaded wirelessly to the cubes via a USB wireless link. For best performance, the company says users should play within a few feet of the USB wireless link (about 20 feet is the maximum range).Sifteo's initial collection of titles will include games for adults, learning puzzles for kids, and games people can play together. The company will launch its Early Access Program in the next few months. You'll be able to join the program for a discounted price of $99 (normally $149) and receive the Sifteo pack: three cubes with a charging dock, USB wireless link, and AC adapter' and 1,000 points to purchase games and apps from the online store. You can also buy anything in the Sifteo store (up to $200) for 50 percent off until June 30.We'll have more photos and video once we get a full demo of the cubes on the floor of CES. For now, you can check out this video from the TED conference (note: the new cubes are now slimmer).

0 Vote(s)

Mozilla has disabled 44,000 older user accounts for its Firefox add-ons site after a security researcher found part of a database of the account information on a publicly available server. The file had passwords obscured with the now-obsolete MD5 hashing algorithm, which has been rendered cryptographically weak and which Mozilla scrapped for the more robust SHA-512 algorithm as of April 9, 2009. The older database didn't end up anywhere dangerous, Mozilla believes."We were able to account for every download of the database. This issue posed minimal risk to users, however, as a precaution we felt we should disclose this issue to people affected and err on the side of disclosure," said Chris Lyon, Mozilla's director of infrastructure security, in a blog post about the database exposure yesterday.Mozilla notified affected users of the problem by e-mail yesterday, it said. "Current addons.mozilla.org users and accounts are not at risk," Lyon said.Password security has become a more prominent concern after a hack of Gawker blog sites earlier this month. Even with passwords obscured by strong hash algorithms, user names can be valuable in further hack attempts, especially when people reuse the same password on multiple sites."Unique passwords are a requirement, not a luxury," said Chester Wisniewski of security firm Sophos in a blog post about the event.

0 Vote(s)

President Obama today cited Apple CEO Steve Jobs' product success as an example of a person who Americans should "expect to be rich" as an incentive for others. Responding to a reporter's question, the president prefaced his comments about Steve Jobs and Apple by saying, "What is...a fact is that people in the top 1 percent, people in the top one-tenth of 1 percent, or one-hundredth of 1 percent have a larger share of income and wealth than any time since the 1920s. Those are just facts. That's not a feeling on the part of Democrats. Those are facts." President Obama speaking today during a White House press conference.(Credit:whitehouse.gov)Which segued into the comments about Apple. "And something that's always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot at the American dream. And that should be our goal. That should be what we're focused on. How are we creating opportunity for everybody So that we celebrate wealth. We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that's a good thing. We want that incentive. That's part of the free market," he said. Obama also cited his confab with some of America's top CEOs on December 16, including Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Intel CEO Paul Otellini. "All of us have to be in a conversation with the private sector about what's going to ensure that we can export and sell our products instead of just buying exports from someplace else. How do we make sure that the green technologies of the future are made here in America And how do we get all these profits that companies have been making since the economy recovered into productive investment and hiring That's a conversation that I had with the 20 CEOs who came here, and that's a conversation I expect to continue in the months ahead," he said.

0 Vote(s)

Analyst firm Gartner today released a forecast of revenue associated with software as a service (SaaS) within the enterprise application software market and it shows that cloud and hosted services are growing at a rapid pace in the enterprise. For the sake of clarity, Gartner estimates that 75 percent of the current SaaS delivery revenue could be considered a cloud service, and that figure could exceed 90 percent by 2014 as the SaaS model matures and converges with cloud services models.Gartner forecasts that SaaS revenue will reach $9.2 billion in 2010, up 15.7 percent from 2009 revenue of $7.9 billion. The market is projected for stronger growth in 2011 with worldwide SaaS revenue totaling $10.7 billion, a 16.2 percent increase from 2010 revenue. There are a number of interesting aspects that Gartner noted in a recent blog post:An increasing number of enterprises are using a variety of SaaS applications from multiple vendors that were procured and deployed without participation from IT, creating management issues and challenges.SaaS deployments are becoming larger, with deals more frequently appearing in the range of thousands to tens of thousands of users within large enterprises.Social media and social software are becoming increasingly integrated with SaaS solutions, as social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are leveraging customer service, sales and marketing initiatives. In contrast, recent research indicates that social software has the lowest adoption rate by buyers of SaaS solutions.Content, communications, and collaboration (CCC) continues to lead the enterprise SaaS market with worldwide CCC revenue on pace to reach $2.9 billion in 2010, followed by customer relationship management revenue of $2.6 billion. As SaaS and cloud services continue to proliferate, there is a clear risk that enterprises could be lulled into a false understanding of what they are actually buying. And as Gartner notes, hosting and application management are not synonymous with SaaS, nor do they necessarily comply with the definition of cloud computing. Whether or not applications are truly "cloud" probably doesn't matter at the moment, but the time will come when enterprise use cases will require more specificity around how and where applications and systems are deployed and managed.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft today unveiled the next iteration of its Silverlight technology, Silverlight 5, which the company said will improve things like media playback and the time it takes to develop applications, along with adding support for 3D and hardware acceleration. "There's been a lot of angst on this topic in the last few weeks," Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president for Microsoft's developer division, told attendees of the company's Silverlight-focused Firestarter event at its headquarters in Redmond, Wash. "Let me say upfront that there is a Silverlight future, and we think it's going to be a very bright one."Questions arose as to Microsoft's commitment to Silverlight development back in late October at the annual Professional Developers Conference, where there was little talk of the runtime. Instead, a sizable focus of the keynote went over how the company was building in faster, and more robust HTML5 compatibilities into Internet Explorer. Microsoft quickly responded to concerns by saying that the technology was still a very important part of the company's development efforts, and later offered up a free, Silverlight-focused Firestarter event as "just like an extra day of PDC, dedicated to Silverlight."Guthrie explained that while Microsoft was focusing heavily on HTML5, it was just one piece of the developer puzzle, and that technologies like Silverlight and the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) made up a technology portfolio. "Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses," Guthrie said. "The flexibility of having each of these is a strength of this platform." As for what's next for Silverlight, Guthrie detailed some of the new features coming to version 5, which the company says will arrive in beta form in the first half of 2011, with a final release later in the year. The company polled users and developers alike using an idea submission and voting page that had some of the most-voted on features rising to the top. Guthrie said more than 21,000 votes had been cast, and that the company had built about 70 percent of those voted-on items into Silverlight 5. New to Silverlight 5 will be extended support for high-definition video content, with support for hardware video decoding. This offloads some of the processing power for decoding an HD movie from the CPU to the GPU. Guthrie promised that this would let end users stream 1080p video on something like a Netbook, as well as save battery life along the way. It also paves the way for 3D Web applications, such as games or interactive interfaces with the use of a new GPU-accelerated 3D API.Silverlight 5 will also include a playback tool called Trickplay, which adds variable speed playback to audio and video. This will let users speed up or slow down the media they're ingesting without affecting things like pitch. As Guthrie joked, the technology will give people stuck having to watch recorded video or audio transcripts at work a faster way to get through them and get on with their day. One of Silveright 5&39's new media features is Trickplay, which lets users adjust the speed of audio and video without affecting pitch.(Credit:Microsoft)Other media tweaks include support for remote controls, DECE-approved content protection, as well as a new power management feature that can tell when you're watching a video, so it won't let the screensaver turn on. The feature also works the other way, so if you've paused something you're watching, it now knows, and can re-enable your power saving settings. As for improvements to what developers can do with their applications, Silverlight 5 will let desktop applications span into multiple windows--something Microsoft said had been the top-requested feature. This effectively lets desktop Silverlight apps perform more like traditional software applications. Also new is support for low-latency networking, which Guthrie explained as being important for applications such as stock trackers, where data may be needed in real time. Version 5 also adds support for data binding debugging, which Guthrie promised would speed up bug hunting on large and complex code structures.Matching the push for advanced typography on the Web, Microsoft has added some improvements to text and printing in Silverlight apps. There is now support for OpenType fonts, as well as multi-column text flow, so that text can go across the page much like you'd find in a desktop publishing application. On that same note, Silverlight 5 adds an API for rich vector printing, so that whatever you print from an application looks just like what you're looking at on-screen.Guthrie did not give a precise date for when the software would be placed in developers hands beyond saying that the first public beta would arrive in the first half of 2011. He also noted that the final features for version 5 were still being worked on. In the past, Microsoft has unveiled new versions of the software at its design-focused MIX conference, where Silverlight first made its debut. However, version 4 was introduced as part of last year's PDC event, before being finalized in April.

0 Vote(s)

George was built in 1950 and is one of the first humanoid robots ever made. After 45 years powered down in a garden shed--how British--George is back online. George was created over the course of three weeks by former Royal Air Force officer Tony Sale, now 79. Having refined the design in four previous versions made of Meccano and cardboard, the then 19-year-old Sale built George in from aluminum and duralumin from a crashed Wellington bomber. He's been languishing in a shed for nearly half a century years--George, not Sale--before emerging to take his place in the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park. George the Robot stands 6 foot tall and can walk and talk, but has sadly lost the capacity to use his photocell eyes to locate and home in on an illuminated bottle of beer.
The developers behind the Kno, a student-focused tablet computer with a pen input, are in talks to sell off their hardware business and focus exclusively on software, according to tech blog BoomTown. The Kno is designed to replace textbooks. The idea is to use pen input to recreate the same kind of tactile satisfaction that comes with smattering massive math textbooks with notes, something most finger-controlled tablets can&'t offer. So it does make sense that the developers behind the Kno might want to leave hardware concerns to another company and focus on delivering software that students will actually use. Pen-enabled tablet computers have actually been around for some time now, but haven&'t quite caught on with students because they just aren&'t a good enough replacement for textbooks. And there isn&'t any kind of indication yet as to whether the Kno&'s software will buck that trend and finally kill the textbook. The Kno already has enough deals in the bank to shift its focus to software a4" the company is working with Cengage Learning, McGraw Hill, Pearson and Wiley, and will beginmarketing the tablets at 10 college campuses across the country initially. The hardware market is also growing increasingly saturated, with Hewlett-Packard recently announcing a tablet running on Palm&'s WebOS mobile operating system and the Motorola Xoom shipping soon a4" and that&'s not to mention the iPad and other existing competitors.Kno plans to release two versions of its tablet computer a4"a single-screen device for $600 and a double-screen clamshell device for $900.The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company has raised $55 million to date, including the$46 million it raised in its most recent round of fundraising last September.
