(Credit:ComScore Video Metrix)Once again, Google sites, primarily YouTube, easily bested all other online video services in February, research firm ComScore revealed today in its Video Metrix study.Over 169 million people watched online video in the U.S. last month, tallying over 5 billion viewing sessions. A total of 82.5 percent of the entire American Internet audience watched at least one video on the Web last month. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of those people--over 141 million--watched video content on Google sites for a total of 1.8 billion viewing sessions. Microsoft's video services came in second behind Google with nearly 49 million unique viewers. Those folks tallied just 297.7 million viewing sessions on the month. Yahoo sites rounded out the top three with 46.7 million unique users totaling 200 million viewing sessions in February.Facebook saw a notable uptick in viewing in February. The social network, which secured the fourth spot last month, saw over 46 million viewers enter into 170 million viewing sessions. In January, Facebook had 42 million people sit through over 122 million viewing sessions. Vevo, which came in second in January video rankings with 51 million users and over 121 million viewing sessions, dropped to fifth last month with only 45.9 million viewers. However, its viewing sessions nearly doubled to 222 million in February, ComScore found. With all that video they're watching, Americans were destined to watch ads last month. According to ComScore, over 3.8 billion ads were served up in February for a total of more than 1.6 billion minutes. The average viewer watched 30 ads on the month. In terms of total ads, no other provider could beat Hulu. The company served over 1.1 billion ads in February for a total of 454 million minutes. The average Hulu viewer watched 48 commercials.

0 Vote(s)

The number of infected Web sites tracked by Dasient has doubled in the past year to more than one million. (Credit:Dasient)More than 1 million Web sites were believed to be infected with malware in the fourth quarter of last year, nearly double from the previous year, according to figures released today by Dasient. Malvertising, advertising containing malware, also is on the rise, with impressions doubling to 3 million per day from the third quarter of 2010, Dasient said in a blog post. "The probability that an average Internet user will hit an infected page after three months of Web browsing is 95 percent," the company said. The news corresponds with information released this week by another security firm. An analysis of than 3,000 Web sites across 400 organizations last year found that 44 percent of them had serious vulnerabilities at all times, while 24 percent were frequently vulnerable for an average of at least 270 days a year, according to WhiteHat Security, which provides Web site testing and security services for companies. Meanwhile, only 16 percent of the sites examined were found to be rarely vulnerable, the report said. About 64 percent of those sites had at least one information leakage vulnerability, which inched past Cross-site scripting as the most prevalent vulnerability, WhiteHat said. Neither WhiteHat nor Dasient identified the Web sites they analyzed or disclosed whether any of the biggest Web brands were among those with malware or vulnerabilities. Dasient researchers wanted to see how easy it would be to spread malware on social-networking sites and created some test accounts to spread various types of links. More than 80 percent of the dozen unidentified sites it tested allowed through links that were on Google's Safe Browsing list, while all of them allowed through links that led to a benign drive-by download. In another test, the researchers posted an ad whose click-through links led to a benign drive-by download and found that the social-networking site kept the ad up for more than three weeks before pulling it. The ad had the headline "Click for a security test," led to a site at "hackerhome.org," and said a Windows calculator would pop up if the computer was vulnerable.

0 Vote(s)

Apple's current iPad(Credit:Apple)TheiPad 2 may be delayed until June due to production issues. At least, that's what one Taiwanese brokerage firm is claiming. In a research note released today, Yuanta Securities analyst Vincent Chen said that manufacturer Hon Hai has run into issues with the production process in light of thetablet's new design and is working on a fix."Our supply chain checks suggest that iPad 2 shipments will be delayed from April to June (time to market), owing to production bottlenecks at Hon Hai after Apple made design changes before Chinese New Year," Chen said in the note sent to CNET and other publications. Chinese New Year began February 3. (Editors' note: Not long after this story was posted, AllThingsD reported that, according to multiple sources, Apple plans to host a press event March 2 to introduce the iPad 2.)Makers of components for the iPad 2 have "pretty much complied with new changes in the design by now," said Chen, but Hon Hai has encountered challenges with the new production process. With the delay, Chen said, iPad 2 shipments during the second quarter will be limited. That could give the growing lineup of Android tablets a brief opportunity to grab more customers. However, the risk to Apple will still be on the downside as the analyst believes that Apple fans will be patient enough to wait for the new iPad rather than switch to Android. For 2011, Chen is forecasting iPad shipments of 30.6 million, though with the two-month delay, that number could drop to as low as 23 million. One possible kink in Chen's prediction: several retailers have already been running low on the current iPad, with a few vendors out of stock completely on certain models, according to the 9to5Mac enthusiast site. Such short supply is typically seen as a sign of an impending new release from Apple.Ironically, the current iPad was the target of similar rumors almost a year ago when an analyst with Canaccord Adams claimed that production problems would push out the tablet's debut by a month to late April. At the time, Apple was saying it would launch the iPad to consumers in late March and missed that timeframe only by nose, releasing the device in the U.S. on April 3. The global debut of the tablet was delayed by a month as a result of higher-than-expected demand in the U.S.Though Apple has yet to reveal what customers can expect from an iPad 2, several reports assert the new tablet will offer a faster processor, thinner case, and built-in cameras both on the front and back, among other features. A few initial reports also claimed the iPad 2 would feature a higher-resolution Retina display, but some analysts now say the tablet will likely offer the same resolution as the current model.Apple told CNET the company would not comment on rumor.Updates at 9:50 a.m. and 10:52 a.m. PT:First, to include information directly from analyst Vincent Chen, and second, to make note of a report saying Apple plans to unveil the iPad 2 next week.

0 Vote(s)

PicPlz, a photo-sharing start-up, has released a programming interface that lets applications tap into its tools for uploading and applying artistic filters to images."We think that allowing developers access to our upload and filter pipeline brings something different to the table than "just another photo-sharing API,'" the company said in a blog post yesterday. "We're pleased to announce that in the past 2 weeks we've had well over 100 developers apply to be part of our API (far exceeding our expectations)."Opening an API lets programmers tap into the abilities of a Web site or operating system, turning it into a foundation for a broader ecosystem. PicPlz released sample code, for example, for building a slideshow that displays PicPlz images.APIs are important for growth, too. By exposing an interface, as Twitter did years ago, a successful service can become plumbing for others' services. That can complicate Web business plans, though: it's hard to show ads if nobody is coming to your Web site. But if your service becomes a utility others depend on, you can charge for high-reliability, premium access to its interface. For years, photo sharing has been dominated by Yahoo's Flickr and some other relatively slow-moving sites such as Shutterfly and Google's Picasa Web Albums. But the old order is being overturned with people sharing photos with Facebook, Instagram, and other tools that make the process relatively easy and very social.

0 Vote(s)

An animation that mocks North Korea&39's heir apparent shows him driving a sports car and mowing down impoverished women and children.(Credit:Screenshot by Elinor Mills/CNET)The Twitter and YouTube accounts held by the North Korean government were hijacked over the weekend and used to post messages critical of the regime and mocking North Korea leader Kim Jong-Il's heir apparent, Kim Jong-Un. The official Twitter account for North Korea posted messages on Saturday, the day of Jong-Un's birthday, calling for an uprising and criticizing him for reportedly hosting lavish parties while North Koreans starve, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, an animation appeared on the regime's YouTube channel the same day showing Jong-Un mowing down impoverished women and children in a sportscar, the report said. The posts and video were removed but another copy of the video was still accessible. Members of a North Korean Internet forum, DC inside, have claimed responsibility for the prank, according to reports. The hijackings come as North and South Korea prepare to begin talks at the end of the month. Last year in November a group of South Koreans were killed on Yeonpyeong island during an exchange of artillery fire and in March a South Korean military ship was torpeadoed.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Microsoft)A security researcher who created a tool he used to find numerous bugs in major browsers has released it to the public, saying the importance of its distribution is heightened by the leak to the Web of an unpatched vulnerability in Internet Explorer. Michal Zalewski, a Google security researcher based in Poland, announced in a blog post this weekend that he was releasing a tool called "cross_fuzz" and said its distribution was a priority because at least one of the vulnerabilities discovered by the tool appears to be known to a mysterious third party. "I have reasons to believe that the evidently exploitable vulnerability discoverable by cross_fuzz, and outlined in msie_crash.txt, is *independently* known to third parties in China," Zalewski wrote in a separate post. "While working on addressing cross_fuzz crashes in WebKit prior to this announcement, one of the developers accidentally leaked the address of the fuzzer in one of the uploaded crash traces. As a result, the fuzzer directory, including msie_crash.txt, has been indexed by GoogleBot," he continued. "I have confirmed that following this accident, no other unexpected parties discovered or downloaded the tool." On December 30, there were two search queries from an IP address in China that matched keywords mentioned in one of the indexed cross_fuzz files, he said. Of the 100 or so bugs Zalewski said he found in IE,Firefox, Opera, and browsers powered by WebKit, including Chrome andSafari, he said he notified the vendors or developers in July and that they are in varying stages of resolution. He provides a timeline for contacting Microsoft here, noting that his first contact on the matter was in May 2008. "At this point, we're not aware of any exploits or attacks for the reported issue and are continuing to investigate and monitor the threat environment for any changes," Jerry Bryant, group manager for Trustworthy Computing response communications at Microsoft, said in a statement.

0 Vote(s)

Is there a happy medium between a Tweet and something like a full-blown blog post Microsoft seems to think so and is working on a new experimental publishing system called Montage that lets you throw together a page of content--be it yours, or collected from the Web in just a few minutes.Actually, less than a few minutes is the aim of the game for Montage, which pulls together news headlines, photos, and Tweets based on Bing searches. These items can then be placed on a page that stays static or changes based on the searches and feeds it's pulling from.Montage is the latest creation to come out of FUSE Labs, a skunkworks project group within Microsoft, formed a little more than a year ago by the now departed Ray Ozzie to build social computing projects. Microsoft is taking the wraps off Montage tomorrow morning as part of the annual Web 2.0 Summit series in San Francisco.Montage began its life as a tool for building applications on touch-screen devices before morphing into a content management system of sorts. Editors at MSN.com had wanted a way to program in trending news items to their front door in fewer steps than their existing publishing tool allowed, so the answer was a search box, plugged directly into Microsoft's Bing. It was designed to pull up photos and news headlines and feed them into a grid that could be placed on the site's front door. As far as that translating to a consumer product, it ends up as more of an experiment to see if people will latch onto something that blurs the lines between consumption and creation. According to Fuse Labs user experience director Matthew MacLaurin, who CNET spoke with earlier today, the original premise of what Montage would end up being was not a replacement for traditional publishing systems. Instead, it's a play at offering users a speedier way to create, share, and discover new content from both traditional and social news sources. "We're not trying to be Pagemaker, or anything like that," MacLaurin joked. An example of a particularly fleshed out Montage that more closely resembles a Web page. Click to enlarge.(Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)To help better figure out where the product could end up, Microsoft has been testing Montage internally for the past few months, trying to figure out what normal people (read: non-reporters) will do with it. The results have been all over the map. Some have used it to make simple photo slideshows, while others have put together pages of content that more closely resemble traditional Web sites. So what does Microsoft think most users will do with it "What we've decided is to basically take it public as a curatorial tool that anyone can use to create these sort of new assemblages based on dynamic streaming social media," MacLaurin said. "In a certain sense, there's a long legacy of drag and drop page builders and stuff like that, and the difference here is that it's driven entirely by search and it's entirely dynamic," he said.Of course, pages need not be dynamic. Users can, for instance, lock down a Montage in time by pinning news stories, photos, videos, and more to a page. Or they can just leave each segment of a Montage set to search on Bing, Twitter, or an RSS feed, putting whatever new content shows up at the top. Though as far as that being useful on something like a Web site, the product is not quite there. "We are going to let you eventually embed montages in a Web page, and of course you can just iframe them now if you want to. We want to make that even easier, we want to support that," MacLaurin said. "There's also this reverse embedding, where you can embed your existing blog into a topic page that then gets surfaced in the Montage gallery."Montage&39's gallery of user submissions.(Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)That gallery (pictured above) is a listing of user-created montages that already does things like highlight the newest creations and the people who made them. This can also be browsed by the tags users assign to their Montages. MacLaurin said the goal of the gallery is to eventually include some more social hooks like a face-off for two similar Montages, as well as user achievements for both users and their creations, doled out for unique, or otherwise popular content. MacLaurin says there's still much more work to be done on the tool, particularly in the kinds of things you can do with it. "This is an area we're going to be doubling down on, is getting a lot more cool widgets in here," he said. The product could also morph into something aimed at professional news outlets to provide things like analytics on how users are viewing and interacting with content, as well as a way to actually submit media content through the tool, as MSN's internal version allows. In the meantime, the company will be letting in groups of users in waves, before fully opening it up by the end of the year.

0 Vote(s)

As an Evernote user on several platforms (Mac, PC,iPad,iPhone, Android, Web), I've always felt as if the software has had a Jekyll-and-Hyde divide between its offering on theMac and PC. The Mac version ran better, and had a more consistent interface, while the PC version looked and ran like it had been pieced together out of spare parts. Luckily, that's about to change. Evernote is set to release a new version of its note-taking and Web-clipping Windows software this morning that improves speed, looks, and functionality. In short, it leapfrogs the old version, and then some. The biggest change you'll see up front in Version 4.0 is that the interface has been given a thorough overhaul. Central navigation items that once took up two rows now take up one. It's the same story for the side bar, which contains your list of notebooks, tags, attributes, and saved searches' these items now take up less vertical space, letting you see more on laptops where your screen real estate may be limited. Along with the app's core navigation, the editing interface--where users spend most of their time composing, has been thoughtfully trimmed down. The formatting menu is identical, but v4 gives the buttons a uniform look, as well as ditches the tagging and source URL options, which previously could not be minimized. This change gives you a considerable boost in workspace--especially if you're working in full screen. Evernote&39's look has been tweaked substantially in version 4.0. You&39'll now find much more vertical room for your work with a slimmed-down navigation menu. (Credit:Screenshots by Josh Lowensohn/CNET) But looks are one thing--it's the speed where you can really tell a difference. The application now launches almost immediately, even on some legacy hardware. It also takes up less memory, which in some casual testing was about five times less than the previous version with one note opened and in edit mode. Even more impressive is the built-in search tool, which now provides instantaneous results. Just these three things right here make the software much more enjoyable to use, whether you keep it running all day, or simply want to fire it up to find something you wrote or clipped a long time ago.Windows 7 users also get a few perks, including support for Windows Jump Lists and automatic geolocation detection. This geolocation item is particularly neat, as with the old version you'd have to manually plug in your latitude, longitude, and altitude. Now, you can click a button and it taps into your computer's coordinates, or whatever home position you've plugged in as the default. It's also nice to have Jump List support, as it means no more fumbling to find Evernote's task tray icon to do something like clip a screenshot, or start a new note. Earlier this month Evernote picked up $20 million in a Series C round of financing, led by Sequoia Capital. The company now has 4.7 million users, and is available on eight different platforms including its browser interface. Its last major interface overhaul on Windows came in September 2009, and brought some of the features and functionality over from the company's Mac version. Version 4 of Evernote will not show up as an automatic update for all users of v3.5 in the next few days. But if you're itching to get your hands on it today, you can simply download the new version directly from Evernote.

0 Vote(s)

Ia4a4ve got a really hot tip for all you folks out there on the Interwebs. Ita4a4s amazing. And no one knows about it.You see, the latest red-hot technology, the keys to the proverbial kingdom, the ultimate cash-cow money machine isna4a4t what you think it is. No, it&'s not social media. Ita4a4s not even behavioral or targeted ads. The ultimate killer-app money machine is&8230'.email. And Groupon proves it.Say what Hear me out, folks.Exhibit 1: Talk to any merchant who has placed ads in the social group buying craze, and they will tell you that the most important thing a social buying company can bring to the table is reach. In other words, how many email addresses can you send my super duper deal to The merchants dona4a4t care about how many Twitter retweets a social buying company gets on average for its deals. They dona4a4t care much about how many a4ALikesa4 deals from the social buying company obtains. Buyers understand perfectly well that these are both nice side benefits that emerge from a well-targeted or suitably massive list.As anyone who has followed Internet ads and commerce can tell you, suitably massive has generally trumped well-targeted in the recent past, which explains why Groupon is the big kahuna. Of course, this all sounds ridiculously intuitive but in many ways it&'s not.How many Silicon Valley VCs are frothing at the mouth throwing money at email-based commerce startups Lots, actually, but they are all called social commerce plays &8212' even though the social aspect is actually less important than the email aspect. To put it in an elevator pitch framework, Groupon is Daily Candy with a better monetization vehicle.Exhibit 2: Email captures intent better than just about any other form of advertising. Why is that You have to actually input your email address to get a newsletter or receive a steady stream of deals. Ita4a4s a lot more intent than one shows by retweeting a link or clicking on a Like or Follow button. The market understands this.In many prime verticals (finance, travel, luxe goods) CPMs (cost per mille, or the amount earned for every 1,000 views) for email newsletters are four to five times higher than the CPMs for content advertised on those same publishersa4a4 Websites. Groupon and all the other social buying companies use email as the social currency to fuel their commerce engines precisely because it goes further than capture fleeting intent. Whata4a4s more, getting an email subscriber vastly increases the probability that anything sent to them is actually read.Compare that to stream-based social media offerings. I use Facebook a lot. Do I read or even scan every message that floats through my stream No way. Maybe I&'m an anomaly, but I somehow doubt it. And if I a4ALikea4 a company, do I seek out their Fanpage regularly or make sure to read their posts Not really. Again, I am certain I am hardly alone in this &8212' which explains, partly, why Facebook is moving more aggressively into the a quasi-email application space. Intent equals higher chance of sales and a better currency.Exhibit 3: Not to denigrate Facebook. On the contrary, with the social networking giant bagging a huge chunk of pageviews on the public Internet, it&'s clear they are doing something right and pulling in a lot of ads.But consider that Groupona4a4s gross revenue is already approaching what many estimate will be Facebooka4a4s revenues and you have a pretty good proxy for a CPX (insert advertising revenue measurement of your choice) between the two entities. Which one is pulling in more revenues per subscriber, the social network or the email play The market (meaning, people who spend money to advertise) know where value in the ecosystem resides. That nexus of that value, despite all the social noise, resides in your inbox. The more things change, the more they stay the same.Editors Note: Alex Salkever is a former technology editor of BusinessWeek.com and former senior writer at AOL DailyFinance.com.

The latest winner in GE&'s $200 million Ecoimagination smart grid contest is Clarian Power, a startup that makes what&'s essentially a home solar kit in a box.Clarian makes a plug-and-play solar solution that it plans to sell for under $1,000. For that price, Clarian founder Chad Maglaque says, you get a few solar panels that can be mounted within an hour or two &8212' either on your own or with the help of a handyman &8212' and plug directly into the home. It also includes with the company&'s SmartBox, a thermostat-sized monitor that manages power flow. The system can offset 10 to 15 percent of a home&'s energy use, and users can choose to add more panels to it if they wish to generate more electricity. There are two key factors in Clarian&'s appeal &8212' it&'s designed to be cheap and easy. Right now, solar enjoys popular support in the U.S., but most home rooftop solar systems retail for upwards of $30,000, and installation is an unwieldy process that requires specialized workers who can charge $5,000 to $8,000 for the project.&''What we&'re doing is we&'re fundamentally changing the installation paradigm,&'' Maglaque said.&''Instead of abarrier to entry of $30,000 to $40,000, why not be able to build out a system that fits any budget&''Clarian&'s pithy box o&' solar proposition is winning the attention of some notable names. (It also makes a similar solution for wind power.) The company was propelled to the win on the back of raves from venture capital heavyweight Kleiner Perkins and RockPort Capital. Maglaque said it has also won the interest of Costco and Lowe&'s, big box retailers who are looking to add home solar offerings. But of course, the idea of making solar easy and affordable isn&'t exactly ground-breaking &8212' companies like Solar City and SunRun have had success offering solar leases, which allow residents to get a solar system for little to no money down, and often replace nearly all of a home&'s monthly energy costs since the companies install bigger systems than what Clarian offers. So is Clarian looking to compete with players like SolarCity and SunRun, who already have significant headway in the marketNo, Maglaque said &8212' it&'s complimentary, and in fact, SolarCity has shown interest in teaming with Clarian. Clarian can fill in the gaps for customers SolarCity has to turn away for full-scale installations when a house&'s roof or location means it doesn&'t get enough sun to make the project ideal for a rooftop system financing. Clarian can tack on a few panels onto, say, the side of the house that does get hit by sunlight, thus offering a smaller solar solution for residents who aren&'t able to qualify for the full rooftop shebang.Clarian sees a market potential of 20 million homes for a product at their price, and so far has had 12,000 people sign up and pay a $25 reservation fee to buy the product&'s intitial launch. The company has also signed up 1,000 installers and is planning a pilot for California and Seattle this sprint, and will launch its product in September 2011.Next Story: Who needs Facebook Zynga launches first two games on Yahoo Previous Story: Pay with your phone: AT&038'T, Verizon, T-Mobile announce Isis mobile commerce networkPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: ecoimagination, SmartBox, Solar, windCompanies: Clarian, Costco, GE, Lowes, SolarCity, SunrunPeople: Chad Maglaque Tags: ecoimagination, SmartBox, Solar, windCompanies: Clarian, Costco, GE, Lowes, SolarCity, SunrunPeople: Chad MaglaqueIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
A much craved-for feature by mobile users, microblogging platform Twitter has finally taken notice and added push notifications for mentions to your username (dubbed @mentions) in its iPhone and iPad apps, as well as through SMS.Here&'s how it works: whenever someone you follow mentions you with your username, Twitter&'s iPhone and iPad apps will open up with a push notification. Alternatively, if you&'re not an iPhone user, you can turn on text message notifications under &''Devices&'' in Twitter&'s settings to have an SMS sent to you instead.Additionally, notifications on the iPhone can also be enabled for direct messages sent to you, as they&'ve been previously with SMS and Twitter&'s Blackberry application, and set to show @mentions from everyone rather than just from the people you follow (though if you&'re planning to do this through SMS, take caution as standard data rates apply.)Previously, users who&'ve wanted push notifications have had to use alternatives such as Boxcar, an app for the iOS platform that enables push notifications for numerous services online.Twitter also plans to make the feature available for its Android and Windows Phone apps in the near future.Next Story: Glam Media hires like crazy, on track to overtake AOL Previous Story: Exit41 wants you to order dinner on FacebookPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPad, iPhone, push notifications, sms, texting, tweetsCompanies: Twitter Tags: iOS, iPad, iPhone, push notifications, sms, texting, tweetsCompanies: TwitterSid Yadav is a contributor to VentureBeat.
Apple&'s chief executive Steve Jobs has decided to take a leave of absence from running the company, and his timing couldn&'t be better.Don&'t expect the doomsday that some of the Technorati are predicting for the iPhone manufacturer&'s shares. The company is slated to release data tomorrow about earnings from its most recent operating quarter, which includes the holiday season. The last time Jobs decided to take a leave of absence, Apple&'s shares plunged nearly 10 percent in extended trading. The U.S. exchanges are closed today, but the company&'s shares aren&'t faring well in international markets following Jobs&' announcement. Some exchanges reporting a drop of around 8 percent. On U.S. markets that would amount to a swing of around $28. It would be equivalent to a bloodbath and, given Apple&'s presence on the consumer tech market, it could have a ripple effect on other tech stocks, driving them down.We know Jobs is a shrewd executive. The announcement today was definitely a calculated one. By picking a day when U.S. markets are closed, he&'s given traders a day to sit down and get a bit of a reality check about where the company is going now that it will once again be in the hands of chief operating officer Tim Cook. The guy did at least a half-decent job running the company the last time Jobs took a leave of absence, and Apple eventossed him a nice $22 million bonus for his troubles. And the company is readying to release its quarterly earnings report for the holiday season. You can bet those earnings are going to be stellar.Apple brought inmore than $20 billion its last operating quarter and sold a whopping 14.1 million iPhones in its first full quarter selling the iPhone 4. The company also picked up a nice refresh for its iPods a4" bringing out a new Nano and a camera-equipped iPod touch that sports the iPhone&'s retina display. Holiday sales fared quite well on both the online and retail fronts despite a still-shaky economy. All in all, Jobs is taking time off at a very good time for the company. The iPad 2 is coming, the next iPhone is coming and Verizon has finally secured the rights to sell the iPhone on its network. Even in cruise control, this is shaping up to be another fantastic quarter for Apple.Previous Story: OpenGamma raises $6M to kill old-school trading softwarePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, medical leave, stocksCompanies: ApplePeople: Steve Jobs, Tim Cook Tags: iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, medical leave, stocksCompanies: ApplePeople: Steve Jobs, Tim CookMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Tomorrow, the first shipments of the $199 Boxee Box go out to people who pre-ordered them. I got a preview demo today at Boxee HQ from CEO Avner Ronen. The video above shows what it looks like on a big-screen TV.The Boxee Box is a small set-top device that connects your TV to the Internet and displays Web video. It is similar to the Boxee service you can download onto your computer, except with a new user-interface designed for the the TV. There are many ways to browse video on Boxeea4"by channel, genre, or what your friends are watching. You can search for shows, and it fetches them wherever they may be on the Web (if available and not blocked, which is a big if these days). It supports HD video in 1080p, and plays all video from HTML5 sites. You can save shows in a playlist to watch later, and &''subscribe&'' to shows once you find them so that they just keep adding to the queue. The Boxee Box gives you not only YouTube, but video from also network TV sites, Comedy Central, Sony&'s Crackle, Engadget, the History Channel, Revision 3, TED, and more. You can also find out what your friends are watching. Boxee will show you any video shared by your friends on Twitter, Facebook, or Boxee. It also supports dedicated video viewing apps, including ones from Netflix, Vudu (pay-per-view movies), YouTube Leanback, TED, Pandora (music), Vevo, the BBC, the New York Times, and (soon) even Hulu Plus. Finally, it also lets you watch any videos on computers or other devices connected through your home network.
Yesterday, both the New York Times and Robert Scoble unveiled publicly for the first time what a company called Kiha Software has been working on for about three years in stealth now: a piece of software called Aro Mobile. With $20 million in backing from the likes of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, they&'re obviously getting a lot of buzz. And that should continue when they fully show the system off in a few weeks at Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. But for now we have a video sneak peak of it in action, and 1,000 exclusive beta invites for TechCrunch readers to try out the software themselves. So what is Aro Currently, it&'s a piece of software that runs on top of Google&'s mobile Android OS. But it&'s not just another layer like some of those awful skins that OEMs design for Android. Instead, it weaves itself into the OS and uses AI and machine intelligence to make sense of what you&'re doing with your phone. It natively ties into youra4semail, phone, calendar, address book, and browser to make them potentially much more useful to you when you&'re on the go.Maybe someone sent you an email mentioning an address, the Aro system can recognize that and with the click of a button give you all kinds of actions you can do with it. The same is true with names a4" of both people and companies. And dozens of other things. But it really is one of those things that&'s better when you see it in action. So watch the videos below. And if you&'re interested in signing up to test it out, use this link. The first 1,000 people who do will get priority access to the beta program (though it is still rolling out in waves as they ramp up).
For a couple of days now, we&'ve been hearing rumors that the Yahoo layoffs included the entire Delicious team. a4sNow Former Yahoo employee and Upcoming founder Andy Baio hasa4stweeted out the above Yahoo! product team meeting slide that seems to show that Yahoo! is either closing or merging the social bookmarking service as well as Upcoming, Fire Eagle, MyBlogLog and others. In some kind of weird founder solidarity, the slide was originally posted on Twitter by MyBlogLog founder Eric Marcoullier.Listed under the ominous &''Sunset&'' are: Delicious, Altavista, MyBlogLog, Yahoo! Bookmarks, Yahoo! PicksUnder &''Merge&'' are: Upcoming, FoxyTunes, Sideline, FireEagle, Yahoo Events and Yahoo People Search. It also looks like sundry Yahoo properties like Yahoo Deals and Yahoo Calendar will be made into features.Delicious, MyBlogLog and Upcoming have been somewhat neglected since being acquired by Yahoo and founders Joshua Schachter, Marcoullier and Baio have all moved on to do other (more successful) things. Perhaps one tell tale sign of Delicious&' demise The support forums are now riddled with spam and team sign-off missives like the one below.I have emailed Yahoo for more information and verification and will update this post when I hear back.Update: AllThingsD&'s Liz Gannes is reporting that the products will be in fact shut down and that the slide does in fact originate from an all hands meeting at Yahoo, following yesterday&'s layoffs. As if we needed more proof, Yahoo Product Manager Blake Irving has threatened to fire whomever leaked the slide. The official response from Yahoo:&''Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond. We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.&''For the few of you unaware this is PR speak for, &''We confirm.&''CrunchBase InformationYahoo!Information provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
