Think&39's City car, mainly marketed to urban dwellers, has the capacity to go 112 miles on a single battery charge, but only a top speed of 60 miles per hour.(Credit:Think)Norwegian automaker Think plans to deliver 15 of its Think Citycars to Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana today.Think CEO Barry Engle is expected to hand over the vehicles at Fort Harrison State Park as part of a ceremony to promote the all-electric vehicle.Indiana will be the first U.S. customer, as part of the state's Project Plug-In initiative, to drive U.S.-assembled versions of the Think City, and it's obvious why.Think's U.S. assembly plant happens to be in Elkhart, Indiana. And while not all the City's parts are "Made in the USA," one key component is. Ener1, the exclusive battery supplier for all of Think's U.S. vehicles, manufactures the City's lithium-ion batteries in Indiana, and it has also contracted to supply its batteries to 60 percent of Think City's European vehicles. Most interesting is that Ener1 is an investor in Think, and the U.S. government has invested in Ener1.Ener1 received $118.5 million in federal funds as part of a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and White House-backed program to promote high-tech battery manufacturing in the U.S The program consisting of $2.4 billion in U.S. funds doled out to 48 battery manufacturing companies in exchange for matched private investments also totaling $2.4 billion. Ener1 also received $70 million in the form of tax incentives from Indiana and local governments. So the cars represent the fruition of a lot of nudges from both the federal government and the Indiana state government to drum up green-collar U.S. jobs and investment in manufacturing.Indiana will use the 15 City cars in its state fleet, and voluntarily have them monitored as part of Project Plug-In, an initiative to study the consumption habits connected with use of electric cars as well as their effect on the electrical grid. The Think City has a top speed of 60 mph, gets up to 112 miles on a single battery charge, and takes approximately 15 minutes to recharge up to 80 percent capacity when using a fast-charging station, longer when charged from a home outlet, according to Think statistics. That American-made battery convenience will come at a cost. It's estimated that the Think City will initially be sold in the U.S. for $34,000.

0 Vote(s)

Tapjoy, a transaction provider for games and sites that use virtual currencies, announced today that it has picked up $21 million in its third round of fundraising after shedding a bit of a dirty image in its old incarnation.Tapjoy was originally called Offerpal a4" a name synonymous with somewhat shady deals in social games. Offerpal worked with companies to get users to sign up for deals ranging from credit cards to Netflix subscriptions. Users earned Farmville cash and other types of virtual currencies after signing up. Critics said the deals sometimes tricked users into signing up for things they didn&'t want.Offerpal bought Tapjoy in February last year, and changed its name to Tapjoy as part of a renewed focus on mobile applications that use virtual currencies. But it was more about shifting away from that image associated with inappropriate promotions and tricky situations on social networks. As of October, the company was managing around 250,000 virtual transactions each day from apps running on Apple&'s iPhone operating system.Advertising deals that give users a way to &''earn&'' virtual currencies like Farmville cash are still a big part of the company, said Shannon Jessup, vice president of global sales and marketing for Tapjoy. The company still works with retailers like The Gap and Blockbuster to give users access to deals and other ways to earn virtual currencies. There are around 1,200 different advertising deals available to users.Facebook plans to migrate its entire system over to Facebook Credits, an official virtual currency for all the applications running on the social network. But that hasn&'t happened just yet, leading Tapjoy to bring in its best month of virtual currency transactions yet in December, Jessup said. Tapjoy is already prepared for the upcoming switch over to Facebook Credits, and is used on a number of other social networking sites like MySpace and Yahoo. It&'s also the transaction method for some stand-alone games like Gaia Online. The funding is intended to help market Tapjoy&'s services internationally. The company especially wants to expand in Asia, where social games and virtual currencies are prevalent, Jessup said. The company also plans to hire additional staff. The San Francisco, Calif.-based company has raised $40 million to date. Rho Ventures led the latest round of fundraising. Existing investors InterWest Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners and D. E. Shaw Ventures also participated in the round.Next Story: Samsung to let its gadget users access Time Warner and Comcast programming Previous Story: Foursquare fights fake friendsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: social games, social networking, virtual currenciesCompanies: Facebook, MySpace, Offerpal, Tapjoy, YahooPeople: Shannon Jessup Tags: social games, social networking, virtual currenciesCompanies: Facebook, MySpace, Offerpal, Tapjoy, YahooPeople: Shannon JessupMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
GE wants a slice of the burgeoning green-data-centers pie &8212' and ita4a4s willing to spend half a billion dollars to get it.The company, which manufactures everything from wind turbines to electric car charging stations, announced today it has acquired power conversion technology company Lineage Power for $520 million from Gores Group, an offering that GE says will help it leverage huge opportunities in telecom and making data centers more efficient. In 2006, the government reported that data centers consumed 1.5 percent of all electricity in the U.S., costing $4.5 billion, and projected that energy use could nearly double by 2011, costing $7.4 billion a year.Kevin Skillern, who heads up GEa4a4s energy venture capital investments told us he believes the rate is higher &8211'three to four percent of U.S. energy output a year. GE hasbacked other green data center technology companies like JouleX and SynapSense in the past, but this acquisition is a major move into the sector.Lineage Power makes energy efficient power conversion technology that converts the AC electricity delivered from the grid to DC electricity to power the servers and equipment in data centers. It also makes DC-DC power modules for telecom purposes and helps companies set up energy systems. Some companies have been demonstrating data centers running on all-DC power as of late, as a way to save energy.Lineage Power had revenues of approximately $450 million last year and counts Verizon among its customers. It also appears to have a small fuel-cell business.Next Story: IBM&'s Watson AI takes on Jeopardy&'s best contestants Previous Story: HeyStaks makes searching socialPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: AC, data centers, DC, energy efficiency, green data centers, power conversionCompanies: GE, Gores Group, Lineage PowerPeople: Kevin Skillern Tags: AC, data centers, DC, energy efficiency, green data centers, power conversionCompanies: GE, Gores Group, Lineage PowerPeople: Kevin SkillernIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
