The current version of Final Cut Pro.(Credit:Apple)It's been awhile since a new version of Apple's Final Cut Pro video editing software was released, but that may change at next week's annual National Association of Broadcasters show. A new report from ProVideoCoalition says Apple plans on "taking over" the 10th annual SuperMeet event taking place on April 12 to announce a new version of the software. The proof there is that some SuperMeet sponsors, including Canon, were purportedly told by event organizers that Apple had chosen SuperMeet as its venue to make the announcement and blocked out all stage time for its introduction. In Canon's case, ProVideoCoalition says that resulted in the camera maker canceling its appearance. The report had also claimed that Avid had its sponsorship cancelled by the event's organizers. That does not appear immediately appear to be the case though. An Avid representative told CNET that it had nothing to announce with its sponsorship of the event but noted that actor and filmmaker Kevin Smith was no longer slated to speak at the event and will instead be speaking at the company's NAB booth. Blackmagic, which is also slated as a sponsor of the event aimed at video editors on Final Cut Pro and other editing platforms, told CNET that it was still participating and had its "usual booth there and are very excited about the event, as always." The same went for Autodesk, which said that it did not plan to present on the main stage but would be participating in the SuperMeet Digital Showcase. Canon, AJA, Apple, and the SuperMeet event organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Apple's Final Cut Pro made its debut at NAB in 1998 before being released as a product the following year. The software has a history of April releases, though its last major version came in July 2009. The software itself hasn't been a standalone product for quite a bit longer though, instead being wrapped up as part of Apple's Final Cut Studio suite, which bundles together Final Cut Pro with Motion, DVD Studio, and Soundtrack Pro, as well as the Color and Compressor applications. Apple also offers a standalone, though less feature-filled version of the software called Final Cut Express, which sits between Final Cut Pro and the iMovie software that's included as part of Apple's iLife suite.Reports began circulating in late February that Apple was nearing completion on a complete overhaul of the software that would bring Final Cut Pro into the 64-bit era and more importantly a release this spring. That report from TechCrunch, which cited anonymous sources, said that the design was both under the hood and sporting a new user interface. Final Cut Pro is of special interest given the direction Apple's iMovie application has taken over the past few iterations. When first offered, iMovie managed to get some trickle-down features from its more advanced siblings. But Apple has taken iMovie in new directions by offering an alternative to traditional, multi-track video timelines and the visual editing tools that surround them. While that's managed to play well to devices like theiPhone,iPod Touch andiPad where iMovie can now be had as a touchscreen application, questions remain about whether such an editing style would work its way up into a pro version of the software.
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.--Energy Secretary Steven Chu is drawing on U.S. history in research and development to advocate for policies to encourage clean energy technology innovation for the future. Chu gave the keynote speech at the ARPA-E Summit here today, saying once again that the U.S. is in a race with China, the European Union, and other countries to create energy products expected to grow in demand. He started out by showing a graph of the rise and fall of oil prices over time, saying that people cannot accurately say where oil prices be in a few years time. Oil recently rose past $100 a barrel, and the U.S. spends about $1 billion a day importing oil."What do we do Do we hope for the best and plan for an economy at $40 a barrel" he said. "I suggest taking a longer-term, more measured approach to the problem."Secretary Chu at ARPA-E Summit 2011.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)Beyond the question of volatile fossil fuel prices, Chu argued that there is big spike in demand for accessible clean energy around the world. "Our strategy should not be hoping for the best...Let's plan for where the world is going to be," he said.He listed a number of areas in which China is taking the lead in cleaner technologies. It has, for instance, deployed high-voltage direct-current transmission lines in which only 7 percent of the energy is lost over 1,200 miles. The comparable loss on the U.S. grid would be 80 percent, he said.Meanwhile, China, France, and Japan also have invested in high-speed rail infrastructure. In finance, the U.S. lags other countries on project financing and public market financing in clean energy, although it leads in venture investing. China has passed the U.S. and other countries in roboticized, high-tech manufacturing as well, he said. The strategy at the Energy Department for promoting clean energy is to bring down the cost to lower than that of fossil fuels, Chu said. "We believe in certain instances it can be competitive with fossil fuels. Whether it's 10 years from today or 50 years from today is the question," he said. "If we get clean energies cost-competitive with fossil fuels, it's a very different world."He touted a number of research programs touching many areas, such as building efficiency, efficient air conditioning, and biofuels. In batteries, he said the Argonne National Laboratory made an advance on lithium ion batteries to improve the safety, life, and energy density of batteries. That technology has been licensed by General Motors and is expected to be used in the second generation of the Chevy Volt.Lithium ion batteries were invented in the U.S., supported by Energy Department research, but the products were commercialized in Japan. Now Japan and Korea dominate the lithium ion battery industry. But as the Argonne battery example shows, technologies can be invented and rapidly commercialized in the U.S, Chu said. "Just because we lost the lead doesn't mean we can't get it back," he said. "We still have the opportunity to lead the world in clean energy and capture the jobs of the 21st century, but time is running out. It is a race and the train is leaving the station."

0 Vote(s)

Wea4a4ve been promised for a while now that our phones will become our personal assistants. Executives from Cambridge, Mass.-based Vlingo sat down with me this week to talk about how theya4a4ve delivered on that promise &8212' and started turning it into real revenue. It seems like all the big guys are trying to get into this business. The incentive, as a Googler put it when the company launched a similar service last year, is that voice is much more natural than typing as a way to interact with your phone. Apple, meanwhile, showed its interest by acquiring a startup called Siri. And Microsoft included voice commands on Windows Phone 7.The difference, according to Vlingo&'s vice president of business Hadley Harris, is that the startup has built all its basic technology, including speech recognition (something that Siri outsourced) and the a4Aintent enginea4 that allows the app to translate your words into actions that it understands. Vlingo is working with other companies to integrate a wide range of apps into the system, so that you can use your voice to buy a plane ticket off travel site Kayak or check your updates on Facebook.Vlingo has been downloaded 7 million times, Harris said. BlackBerry users represent most of those downloads, since thata4a4s the phone that Vlingo focused on first, but iPhone and especially Android are catching up. The company&'s strategy is to release new features on Android first, then port them to other phones as resources and technology allow. The app is free, so Vlingo makes money through advertising and revenue sharing with its partners. Specifically, Harris told me it currently earns $7.74 for every 1,000 Web searches, $49 for every 1,000 local searches, and $24 for every 1,000 a4Aothera4 monetizable actions, such as a ticket purchase on Kayak. With users performing an average of 30 actions every month, Harris said Vlingo is making about 14 cents per user per month. That might seem a little low, Harris acknowledged, but the plan is to dramatically increase both the number of users and the number of actions over the next year. Most promisingly, he said Vlingo has made deals with a number of Android handset manufacturers who dona4a4t want to direct all of their usage to Google services. (He said it&'s too early to reveal who the manufacturers are.) Not only will that put Vlingo on more phones, it will also make the application more prominent on those phones by turning it into the default app whenever you want to use voice commands.Next Story: Why display ads are cool again Previous Story: Gamification is the new black, reaching beyond loyalty programs to engagementPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: mobile personal assistantsCompanies: VlingoPeople: Hadley Harris Tags: mobile personal assistantsCompanies: VlingoPeople: Hadley HarrisAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Ever since rumors of a Facebook phone started last fall, therea4a4s been talk of a partnership between the social network and British phone manufacturer Inq. Now Inq has finally revealed its Facebook-focused Android phones, the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q.The phones will be the first to use Facebooka4a4s Social Graph API, which allows for more Facebook content than ever to be sent to your phonea4a4s home screen, according to Engadget. We expect similar integration with Facebooka4a4s new API to make it to the next version of HTC&'s Sense user interface.Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been coy about whether the company is building a phone or not, and personally, I never understood why Facebook would want to be in the hardware business. Ita4a4s better off providing better tools for phone manufacturers to deliver the best Facebook experience possible on their devices. Both the Cloud Touch and Cloud Q run Android 2.2, and feature 3.5-inch touchscreens, as well as 5-megapixel cameras. The Q offers a hardware keyboard, while the Touch is all screen. Both phones also feature Spotify instead of Androida4a4s typical music app. Clearly, theya4a4re designed for teenagers who spend most of their time on Facebook and are beyond the quaint need to purchase music. The Cloud Touch will launch in the UK in April at Best Buy and Carphone Warehouse. The Cloud Q is expected to appear some time in the third quarter. Therea4a4s no word yet on a US launch, but we can certainly expect similar teen-focused devices to hit these shores eventually.Next Story: Yahoo announces Livestand digital newstand for tablets Previous Story: Internet Explorer 9 comes out of betaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Cloud Q, Cloud Touch, smartphonesCompanies: Facebook, Inq Tags: Android, Cloud Q, Cloud Touch, smartphonesCompanies: Facebook, InqDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
