Motorola is making changes to the dual-core Droid Bionic.(Credit:Motorola)Three months after its unveiling, the Motorola Droid Bionic is still without a launch date or price. And now it appears that the handset won't land at Verizon Wireless until the third quarter of this year.In a conversation with The Wall Street Journal today, a Motorola spokeswoman said Moto is delaying the Droid Bionic's release until this summer so it can incorporate several enhancements that will make "an even better consumer experience." The spokeswoman didn't offer specifics, but the original second-quarter launch window is now seen as unlikely.Neither Motorola nor Verizon have said much about the dual-core handset since they first pulled the curtain back atCES in early January. Typically, that's the perfect time for the rumor mill to start up, which is exactly what happened last week. A member from Howard Forums first got the Android faithful buzzing when he claimed that Motorola had scrapped the plans for the Bionic in favor of another device. What's more, the member said the replacement model would not arrive until the middle of the year at the earliest. The Droid Bionic impressed us a lot in Las Vegas, so we're glad to see it's still on track, even if it's coming a bit later. As to exactly what kind of changes are coming, might I suggest taking the time to offer a thinner form factor or Gingerbread update How would you change the droid Bionic

0 Vote(s)

More details about HP&39's upcoming WebOS tablet are leaking out.(Credit:Engadget)As February 9 draws nearer more details about HP's slate of WebOStablets that the company is expected to announce keep leaking out.Today's edition is brought to us by PreCentral.net, which obtained a very detailed spec sheet for the Topaz tablet HP is reportedly working on. PreCentral's document is about a year old, but appears to jibe with one that Engadget posted last week. Both note that the Topaz is set to have a 1024x768 resolution 9-inch screen' have premium audio, sporting the Beats by Dre branding, and a wireless dock.Today's document shows that the "wireless dock" is actually an updated version of the wireless charging device paired with thePalm Pre, called the Touchstone. The updated version of the Topaz tablet will allow wireless charging' photo, music, and contact sharing' audio streaming via Bluetooth' video streaming' and, naturally since this is HP we're talking about, wireless printing. There's also a slew of cloud-integration services planned, including a "tap-to-send" feature for music and photo and possibly e-book sharing. There's also a new service called "HP Cloud canvas."Other reported specs include 512MB of RAM, three options for storage (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB), a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a Qualcomm MSM8660 1.2GHz processor, and a weight of 1.5 pounds.HP is expected to unveil all of this on February 9 at an event in San Francisco. We'll be there live-blogging the proceedings, so be sure to come back here for the definitive details from HP.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Android Central)Seeing that it's already received the FCC's blessing, the HTC Evo Shift 4G is hardly a secret, but in the days leading up to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show more details are leaking out about the Andorid smartphone.Android Central yesterday intercepted an upcoming Radio Shack newspaper ad that points to a Sunday, January 9, release date for the Evo Shift 4G. You don't need a calendar to know that such a date makes sense. It's the last day of CES, after all, which would give HTC and Sprint the time to formally announce the handset in Las Vegas. According to the ad, the listed price will be $149.99, which is about what we'd expect. From the outside, the Evo Shift 4G looks not unlike Sprint's original Evo 4G, though it should add a sliding physical keyboard. We're still in the dark regarding the device's specs, but we expect it to include at least an 800MHz processor, 512MB RAM, and a 5-megapixel camera.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:LG)After expanding its streaming service into Canada, it seems Netflix is looking elsewhere internationally to build its business.Speaking to the CBC last week, Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey said the company is "talking about other regions in the world." He went on to tell the publication that Netflix is planning to "continue our international expansion next year." He also told the CBC that the company will "allocate significant dollars to it."Even more potential evidence of Netflix expanding internationally was revealed today when AdWeek cited unnamed sources that claim Netflix is working with "advertising and media agencies" around the world to determine ad placement. The report claims that those talks are currently "exploratory" in nature, but indicate that Netflix is getting serious about expanding the availability of its streaming offering. As Netflix expands internationally, the company is leaving its DVD-by-mail service in its wake. In October, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings echoed that sentiment, saying that the focus of his company is changing. He also acknowledged at the time that he was looking outside of North America to expand Netflix's streaming operation."By every measure, we are now primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail," Hastings said in a statement accompanying his company's third-quarter financial results. "At the same time, the introduction of our streaming offering in Canada in late September has provided us with very encouraging signs regarding the potential for the Netflix service internationally."Hastings didn't say how popular its streaming offering is in Canada. However, Swasey told the CBC last week that the company plans on being profitable in that country by the one-year anniversary of its Canadian launch in September.Expanding internationally seems like the next logical step for Netflix as it attempts to become the go-to streaming company service on different devices. However, it won't necessarily be met with open arms.In Europe, for example, Netflix will be forced to compete with Lovefilm. That company currently caters to customers across the U.K., Sweden, Germany, and other countries. Aside from its by-mail service, the company has a streaming service like Netflix's. That offering is available on the PC and on Sony'sPlayStation 3.Regardless, Netflix has no other choice but to expand if it wants to see its streaming service continue to grow in leaps and bounds. But it should be interesting to see if it can maintain its winning streak.

0 Vote(s)

DocVerse, acquired by Google earlier this year, has ported its software onto Google's network and is ready to let early testers get a crack at Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office. The software letsMicrosoft Office users who also have Google Apps accounts sync their documents with Google without having to work within the Google Docs Web interface, creating a Web-based copy of that native document for sharing and collaboration.Google's been trying for several years now to convince businesses to migrate away from Microsoft's Office suite, but there are still lots of businesses that prefer all the bells and whistles that come with the native applications. This application lets them stay within the familiar Office suite but add the benefits of Web syncing. The software works with Office 2003, 2007, and 2010, Google said, and interested Google Apps customers can sign up to test it out before a wider launch.

0 Vote(s)

Mark your calendars, Facebook masses. November 17 is National Unfriend Day, as declared by late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. "Friendship is a sacred thing, and I believe Facebook is cheapening it," he says. "I go on this Facebook and I see people with thousands of what they call friends, which is impossible--you can't have a thousand friends." So Kimmel suggests examining your list of Facebook friends and only keeping the real friends (you know, as in people who've actually breathed the same air as you). Good idea, Mr. Kimmel. According to Robin Dunbar, a professor of anthropology at Oxford University, our brains can't keep up with more than 150 friends anyhow. So, why not Go ahead and use National Unfriend Day as an excuse to "clean up" your friends list guilt-free.It&39's not you, it&39's your annoying status updates. I promise.(Credit:Karmaloop.com)But before you go on an unfriending rampage, consider the following advice: 1. Keep watch on your frenemies. These days, it seems like the immediate response to being insulted or betrayed is, "OMG I'm going to delete them from Facebook." But don't forget this saying: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. If life is a battlefield, then for some, Facebook is the front line. Take advantage of it. You don't have to interact with your enemies (er, frenemies), but you can use the News Feed to keep tabs on them.2. Value their information. Facebook isn't only about maintaining friendships. Consider other ways in which your potential unfriendees interact with Facebook. Do they post interesting or helpful links Are they an expert in a field that's relevant to your work Remember that most people have something valuable to offer, so consider a person's knowledge, skill set, and connections before unfriending. 3. Consider privacy settings. If you're inclined to unfriend someone to protect your privacy, there are other ways to hide your information without deleting someone. You can choose to hide your wall, photos, status updates, or other content from just a few people--or entire groups of people. Also very useful is the ability to control specific posts. Check out this Facebook privacy guide for a clear explanation. Thank you, Facebook. 4. Control your news feed. Some people are obnoxious status updaters who simply clog your News Feed and put a damper on your Facebook experience with gems like, "I'm so sad. Why do I always get this upset *tear*'" "Damnit! I forgot to put sugar in my coffee'" or "OMG, I just bought the best stuff ever! Neener." Sure, their behavior may warrant an unfriending, but you have another option: Hide them from your News Feed. Next time they post something like, "Dontcha wish ur gurlfriend was hawt like me" mouse over the update, and an "X" button will appear. Click the X and select "Hide all by _______". Their posts will no longer appear in your timeline. If you change your mind (or they change their habits), you can undo this setting. 5. Define your "friends." Ask yourself, "How do I want to use Facebook" Set some guidelines, like whether or not you'll add work friends, acquaintances, business contacts, blog readers, and so on. Or maybe you'll only add people you're really friends with. Whatever you decide, stick with it--not only will it help prevent future unfriending, it'll also remind you who you've given permission to view your content.6. Don't add them in the first place. Unless it's the rare "friends at first sight," don't send a friend request to someone after meeting them for the first time. It's an obvious I'm-adding-you-because-we-officially-met-and-now-I-can-Facebook-stalk-you move. You may find that you and this person never meet again, or your "friendship" fizzles due to your premature friend request that forcefully bypassed the real-life steps necessary to build a real friendship. Admit it, you only wanted to look at their photos. 7. The friend-purging status update. In the spirit of National Unfriend Day, you've decided to delete those unworthy of your profile. Well done. Now, sign off Facebook and be satisfied with your actions. Don't send the following message to the friends who made the cut: "If you're seeing this status update that means I like you enough to still be my friend!!!!!" Again, don't do it. It's arrogant.

0 Vote(s)

Website monitoring startup WatchMouse is now monitoring the top 100 retail websites for availability around the holiday shopping season. The starup tested retail sites including Apple, Amazon, BestBuy, Borders, Overstock, Walmart and Zappos, for availability and performance during the month leading up to and including Thanksgiving Day, November 25 and Black Friday, November 26. WatchMouse says that 27 of the 100 sites had 100% uptime' 15 came in at 99.99%, and only American Eagle Outfitters, GiltGroupe, Footlocker.com, and Fry&'s Electronics landed in the &''unacceptable&'' category. American Eagle Outfitters performed the worst during the monitoring period from October 25 &8211' November 26, 2010 with nearly one full day of downtime. Additional websites that experienced performance issues on either Thanksgiving, Black Friday, or both included Abercrombie and Fitch, Bulgari, JC Penney, Louis Vuitton, Office Max, Pottery Barn, Toys R Us, Williams-Sonoma, and Z Gallerie.WatchMouse says e-retailers are particularly vulnerable to slow page load speeds because of the large number of components each website needs to load in order to optimize all of its product offerings and images. But latency and performance is particularly important for retail sites because users will abandon transactions. According to a recent report published by Forrester Research and Akamai, two seconds is the new threshold in terms of an average online shoppera4a4s expectation for a web page to load. Other research conducted by Google and Microsoft revealed that a delay of only a half second can cause increased shopping cart abandonment rates, higher bounce rates, fewer pages per visit, and reduced revenue per site visitor. With consumers expected to spend $32.4 billion online this season, retailers are under even more pressure to ensure that their sites perform over the next few months. While more retailers were offering online deals this year on Black Friday, it should be interesting to see how retail sites perform on Cyber Monday, which is one of the most trafficked online spending days of the year.
A lot of people out there still seem to think that all blogs do is riff off of major media content. Reblog it, or just plain plagiarism. Most people know that most major news is now broken by blogs, but the prejudice is still out there. One thing we abhor is &''the unattributed rewrite,&'' When some publication takes a story that was broken by someone else and simply rewrites the same story in their own words without any attribution to the source of the story. It&'s just not done by reputable sites, whether they&'re blogs or mainstream media. A simple &''the story was first broken by the Associated Press,&'' or whoever, is the honorable thing to do.Speaking of the Associated Press, they&'ve stepped in it again. We&'ve been critical in the past. They have ridiculous rules around the quoting of their work. Rules they&'ve broken themselves multiple times. They still owe me $12.50, for example, and there&'s the more recent Woot story. Then there was that whole Obama thing. And the legendary story about AP Threatening their own affiliate for embedding an AP YouTube video. We love them so much for their hapless foray into the Internets that we&'ve banned them for life. We&'re not sure exactly what that means, but we&'ll figure it out over time. Now there&'s this. On November 18 we broke the news of the MySpace/Facebook surrender in a post titled Hell Freezes Over As MySpace Fully Surrenders To Facebook. Everyone covering the story read ours, simply because we were hours before the news officially broke. The AP later that day published their own version of the story. And they used &''Surrender&'' in the title. See MySpace to Facebook: OK, We Surrender.Even that isn&'t cause to complain. I mean, they were surrendering after all. But their choice of picture for the story &8211' the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II, is just too much of a coincidence. There is no way that story was written and that picture added as a completely independent beginning. They should have chosen a different picture, or they should have given us credit for breaking the story. And so for that, AP, we must respond. As of this moment, you are on double secret probation, and we ask that you exit the tech news business in an expeditious and orderly fashion until you can behave like non-evil, non-lazy citizens again.Update: Jason Kincaid says that CBS may have chosen the image and even the title, not AP. See here for the same article without the picture and with various titles. If that&'s the case I apologize to AP and revoke the double secret probation. Insert CBS above instead. We&'ll update if we hear more from either organization.

0 Vote(s)

Well-known venture capital investor in Twitter and Foursquare, Union Square Ventures, is raising a third fund likely to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 million, peHUB reports. That&'s more than twice the size of its $156 million second fund that closed in 2008.In the peHUB article, Union Square investor Fred Wilson (pictured) said the amount wasn&'t that high, although he didn&'t dispute that a third fund is in the pipeline.a4AThe rumors of USV raising a large fund are categorically false,a4 he wrote in an email to peHUB on Saturday. a4AWe will never raise a large fund. We like the small fund model and are completely and totally committed to it.a4Requests for additional comment from USV were not immediately returned Tuesday. The VC&'s debut fund was only $125 million, which it launched in 2004.Wilson, who once famously called Apple a4Aevila4 for its seemingly relentless quest to dominate the mobile ecosystem and who dismissed Facebook as simply a a4Aphoto-sharing site,a4 may not be hedging his bets in declining to disclose an exact amount of any third fund.An early investor in everything from white-hot gaming company Zynga to blogging platform Tumblr, Union Square has long been at the forefront of handing out early-round funding to startups it thinks can go the distance. Thus far its track record has been lucrative and solid: USVa4a4s exits include Feedburner, which Google snapped up in 2007 for a reported $100 million' Yahooa4a4s $30 million acquisition of Del.icio.us in 2005' and Tacoda, which AOL bought for terms rumored to be in the $300 million range and promptly shuttered. But the days of small seed investments turning into massive payouts may be waning, third fund or no, said USV last week. Wilson warned in a blog post Friday that &''storm clouds are coming&'' as the frenzy to invest in the latest tech darlings has gotten out of hand.a4AI think the competition for a4hota4a4 deals is making people crazy, and I am seeing many more unnatural acts from investors happening,a4 Wilson blogged.Coming on the heels of Tumblra4a4s a4Alarge and competitivea4 (but undisclosed) round of funding last week, USV may keep its third fund small not only to follow a company model, but because it is finding the latest spate of buy-ups to be irrational and bad for the industry overall.a4AIf it were just valuations rising quickly, Ia4a4d be a bit less concerned,a4 said Wilson. a4ABut we are also seeing large deals ($5mm to $15mm) getting done in a few days with little or no due diligence. Investors are showing up at the first meeting with term sheets. I have never seen phases like this end nicely.a4Next Story: All Points Bulletin goes free to play, but will that save it from being a bad game Previous Story: Facebook fixes bug disabling female user accountsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Social networks, Venture CapitalCompanies: aol, Apple, del.i.cious, Feedburner, Foursquare, Google, Pehub, Tacoda, Tumblr, Twitter, ZyngaPeople: Fred Wilson Tags: Social networks, Venture CapitalCompanies: aol, Apple, del.i.cious, Feedburner, Foursquare, Google, Pehub, Tacoda, Tumblr, Twitter, ZyngaPeople: Fred WilsonRiley McDermid is a contributing reporter to VentureBeat.

Now that people are just starting to get comfortable with the concept of the check-in for geo-location, it is starting to spread to other areas like product check-ins, TV show check-ins, and website check-ins. Just a couple weeks ago, Meebo introduced website check-ins as a new feature for its Meebo Bar. And before that, at our last Disrupt conference in San Francisco, two of the startups (Badgeville and OneTrueFan) launched entire companies around the concept of the website check-in. So why would you ever want to check into a website I ran into Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg today at SAI&'s Ignition conference in New York City, who explains in the video above. The Meebo Bar is an IM and sharing extension that increasingly is appearing on many Websites. Meebo is now testing the concept of website check-ins, where you can check into any site you are on by clicking a button and sharing that on Facebook or Twitter. This is not the same as sharing a specific link, although it supports that as well. It is more just telling everyone you know that you like a certain site and it acts as an implicit endorsement. As a result, you will be able to find new sites through people, kind of like you can with StumbleUpon. A check-in in this respect is very similar to a Stumble.People who check in the most become &''VIPs,&'' with the idea that individual publishers could then reward their most loyal visitors with recognition or extra perks. You can sign up for the alpha version of the Meebo extension here (for Firefox and Chrome only) to check out the check-in feature.CrunchBase InformationSeth SternbergmeeboBadgevilleOneTrueFanInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
