Four people sit outside the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York at 12 p.m. ET yesterday, lining up for the new iPad 2, which goes on sale at 5 p.m. today.(Credit:Marguerite Reardon/CNET)The Apple iPad 2 hits store shelves at 5 p.m. local time today all over the country, and the second-generationtablet is already generating a lot of buzz with a few eager customers lining up outside some Apple stores at least a day in advance. Unlike notable Apple product launches of the past, this time, the company didn't offer an extended preorder period. And it wasn't allowing customers to reserve devices weeks in advance of the sale. Instead, the company only began taking orders for the iPad 2 starting at 1 a.m. PT with orders expected to arrive at customers' homes sometime next week. What does this mean for potential customers on launch day It could mean long lines at some stores with potential shortages of certain models and configurations of theiPad 2. But Apple employees and workers at its retail partners say they're ready. Unlike last year's launch, when the original iPad was available in Apple stores and select Best Buy stores, this year, the iPad 2 will be also be available at Target, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Verizon and AT&T retail locations, and online at Amazon.com.When we spoke with a sales representative at Apple's flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York yesterday, where four people were already in line at noon, he was confident the company would have enough iPads on Friday evening to satisfy customer demand."I can't guarantee that we will have every model in stock," he said. "But we will be getting more over the weekend."A sales associate at the Apple store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan said the store may sell out the first evening the iPad is on sale, but he said the store would get more shipments over the weekend to fulfill demand.Across the street and down the block, a salesman at the Best Buy store on 62nd and Broadway in New York, said the store has more iPad 2s in stock for the launch than it had for last year's launch of the initial iPad. While he wouldn't guarantee that the store won't sell out the first day or even the second day, he was confident that this particular Best Buy location had enough iPad 2s to meet a higher demand than last year. "But there's going to be a line," he said. "If you want one, I'd show up no later than 2 p.m. just to make sure you get the one you want."CNET reporters on both coasts will once again be tracking the lines that form and providing insight into the initial sales of the iPad 2. CNET reporter Marguerite Reardon and photographer Sarah Tew will be in Manhattan, while CNET reporter Josh Lowensohn and photographer James Martin will be providing updates from San Francisco. Check out our coverage throughout the day and evening right here, where we will post updates as well as photos. College student Chris Tantillo of Rockland, N.Y., was first in line at the Upper West Side Apple store in Manhattan. He was getting paid $25 an hour to hold a place in line for an eager iPad 2 customer. He had been there since 7 a.m. ET yesterday.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon)New York 1:30 p.m. ET: About three and a half hours before the iPad 2 goes on sale, there are between 500 and 600 people crammed into police barricade pens outside the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Brian Ceballo and his cousin Joseph Cruz, both of Brooklyn, have been here since 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. They waited in the drizzling rain all day Thursday and braved a torrential downpour late Thursday night and into the wee hours of Friday morning to be the second and third people in line for the new iPad 2. The cousins did take shelter for a couple of hours inside the Apple store between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. this morning.Amanda Foote, a college student originally from Florida, was the only person ahead of them. She got to the store at 5:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday. I spoke with her yesterday when I checked out the line at the Apple store. But Foote was gone by 9 a.m. after she sold her first spot for $900 to Hazem Sayed, founder of the app developer Zami. Sayed has developed aniPhone app that allows people to chat with each other while standing in line. The $900 he spent to buy Foote's spot, which she originally advertised on Craigslist for $600, was part of a publicity campaign to get people to notice his app.The line at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York was at least 500 people deep by 2 p.m. ET on Friday as people gathered to buy the iPad 2, which goes on sale at 5 p.m. ET.(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew) New York 2 p.m. ET: The line has started to grow beyond the caged-in barrier area right next to the glass cube at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue. Apple security has been setting up more barricades to fence people in along the the 58th Street side. Apple product launches have become old hat for security workers and businesses surrounding the Apple store here. And they seem to deal with the crowds without much effort or fanfare. The line at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York is growing. It started to wrap around the block along the West 58th Street side of the building around 2 p.m. ET, three hours before the iPad 2 goes on sale.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon) New York 3 p.m. ET: While I've been hanging out on the steps outside the big glass cube above the Apple store on Fifth Avenue, my colleague, CNET photographer Sarah Tew, checked out Apple's Upper West Side store a few blocks away at 68th and Broadway. Like the store on Fifth Avenue, hundreds of people are lined up outside the store waiting for the iPad 2 to go on sale at 5 p.m. ET.The following are several pictures she shot from the Apple store on the Upper West Side. At least 200 people waited outside the Apple store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan this afternoon waiting for the iPad 2 to be released. (Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)Only a handful of people waited all night at the Apple store on the Upper West Side. (Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)Food vendors lined up 67th Street in New York were doing good business as people lined up for the iPad 2.(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)New York 3:15 p.m. ET: After hitting the Apple store on the Upper West Side, Sarah strolled down to a nearby Best Buy store on 62nd and Broadway. Unlike the Apple stores, which were surrounded by people waiting in line, there was no one standing in line for the iPad 2 at Best Buy. Salespeople in the store said if she wanted an iPad 2, she could come back at 4:30 p.m. ET when they expected the line to form. The iPad 2 goes on sale at 5 p.m. ET. A salesman on Thursday said the Best Buy store on 62nd Street should be well-stocked. Maybe some of the folks standing in line at the Upper West Side location should go to Best Buy instead. There was no line at the Best Buy store on 62nd Street and Broadway in New York City just a few blocks from the Upper West Side Apple Store, where at least 200 people were lined up. (Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)New York 3:30 p.m. ET: The crowd has continued to grow all afternoon at the Apple store on Fifth Avenue. The single-file line was starting to wrap around the block. Two hours before the iPad 2 will go on sale, the line at Apple&39's store on Fifth Avenue was starting to wrap around the block as people lined up along 58th Street next to the FAO Scwhartz toy store.(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)More from the Apple store on Fifth Avenue as people wait for the launch of the iPad 2.(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew) New York 4:30 p.m. ET: Apple has closed the Fifth Avenue store to regular shopping. And the employees downstairs below the cube are starting to cheer and chant in anticipation. Apple employees manning the line outside told me they have no idea if they have enough iPad 2s in stock to meet the demand at the store right now. The line of people is wrapped around the block down 58th Street along Madison Avenue to 59th Street. The apple employee we spoke to said they will be handing tickets out soon. And those who get a ticket will be guaranteed an iPad 2. Apple has closed the store to regular shopping until after 5 p.m. ET.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon) New York 5 p.m. ET: Just before 5 p.m., Apple lined up its employees outside to cheer and clap as they counted down to the official launch of the iPad 2. And moments later the first iPad 2 customers were escorted into the store.Apple employees started clapping and cheering about five minutes before they let the first iPad 2 customers into the store on Fifth Avenue.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon) Brian Ceballo and his cousin Joseph Cruz were the first two people in the Apple store on Fifth Avenue who were buying the new iPad 2. Ceballo and Cruz had waited in line since Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. ET.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon)New York 5:10 p.m. ET: The first iPad 2 customer at the Fifth Avenue store has emerged from the Apple cube with two iPad 2s in hand. Alex Scumilov came to the Apple store on Thursday afternoon to buy a MacBook Pro. But he ended up staying the night and waiting in line with about 15 other people for the new iPad 2. He was fifth in line, but was the first person to come out of the store. He said he was keeping one iPad 2 for himself and selling the other to a friend.Alex Scumilov was the first iPad 2 customer to emerge from the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York.(Credit:CNET/Marguerite Reardon) San Francisco 3:45 p.m. PT (and switching from Maggie Reardon to Josh Lowensohn): This is CNET's third time checking in on the San Francisco store, but the first update. We swung by here last night around 6:30 p.m. PT, and there was no line to be seen. At around 8:30 a.m. PT this morning, there were 100 or so folks lined up in front of the store, the first of which had gotten there just after 4 a.m. PT. Now the line stretches well around the block, only to be broken up in a few places by parking garages, mailboxes, and sidewalk crossings. The front of the line at the Apple store in downtown San Francisco.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)At the front of the line is not the typical Apple fan. Instead, it was an enterprising young man named Josh Elavitti, who was doing a running job for paid errand service TaskRabbit. Elavitti was buying two iPad 2s for clients, one who lived just across town in Hayes Valley, and another who planned to snatch the iPad 2 just after sales began and take it on a direct flight to Singapore. How much is this that 13-hour wait worth, you might be wondering Just $60 a piece from the two buyers, the majority of which will end up in Elavitti's hands. The rest, around $12 or so, goes to TaskRabbit. In the middle is Jonathan Ive, Apple&39's SVP of industrial design.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Leonard Yeung is flying to Singapore tonight with his new iPad 2. He got it by spending $60 to have someone from TaskRabbit (Josh Elavitti) sit in line for him for 14 hours. (Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)San Francisco 4:29 p.m. PT: Those who were sitting down near the front of the line are now up and ready to go. That includes a group of about 25 who were just graced with an Apple store employee who is going to act as a translator since they speak Cantonese, and not English. One of their bilingual group members, who was going to have to act as the translator for all of them, told CNET the move made his life much easier. There was also a 20-minute or so demo session of iPad 2 apps by their developers, which Apple shut down after the iPad 2 demo units were swarmed by tourists and other passers-by looking to get their hands on the unit. Among the three were Chair, the makers of the hit game Infinity Blade, Firemint, who was showing off Real Racing 2 HD, and Synthetic Corp., which was demoing the new version of its Incredibooth photo taking software. San Francisco 5:11 p.m. PT: Jonathan Ive, Apple's senior VP of industrial design, is here watching from the top deck inside the store. The first sale took eight minutes. San Francisco 5:18 p.m. PT: Grabbing one of the first iPads was Elavitti, with whom CNET had spoken earlier. Right after he came out, he handed it over to Leonard Yeung, who was later catching a flight to Singapore. Yeung told CNET he intended to keep the iPad, and wasn't going to sell it, unlike a handful of other line-waiters CNET talked to who said they had already secured buyers on both Craigslist and eBay. And here we have Josh Elavitti, with iPad in hand.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET) San Francisco 6:17 p.m. PT: The line here now wraps nearly around the entire block. CNET talked to the manager at The Body Shop, the cosmetics retail chain, who said he was pleased with foot traffic brought in from the release. The store had anticipated it ahead of time, though was also given a heads up by Apple last week. This happens every time there is a product release, he said. iPad 2 buyers work their way inside the downtown San Francisco Apple store.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)More than an hour after the device went on sale in San Francisco, the line was wrapping nearly around the entire block. (Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET) Others weren't so pleased though. An employee at Crate & Barrel, which is a few stores up the street from Apple's downtown store, told CNET that the store tends to get less foot traffic on launch days, with this launch being no different. San Francisco 6:27 p.m. PT: I'm following up on rumor that there are no more white Wi-Fi iPads. San Francisco 6:33 p.m. PT: The people at the front of the line have been here since around 2 p.m. PT. Sold out are 16GB and 32GB models of the white, Wi-Fi-only models. San Francisco 6:36 p.m. PT: I also swung by the Verizon retail store earlier, which sold out if its stock in about 10 minutes. Employees there didn't know when they were going to have more, and they were not doing rain checks or reservations. The following are more shots taken by our photographer James Martin around the time Apple started selling the iPad 2 here at the downtown San Francisco store (Enjoy while I take a break):After the long wait, Apple starts to lower the black curtain inside the downtown San Francisco store. It&39's 5 p.m. PT sharp. (Credit:James Martin/CNET)This shot shows the reflection of the crowd as Apple gets ready to let iPad 2 buyers inside.(Credit:James Martin/CNET) A view from above after the first few iPad 2 buyers are let into the downtown San Francisco Apple store.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)James Alimeda, who was second in line for a iPad 2 in at the downtown San Francisco store, was also one of the first to walk out of the San Francisco store.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Another shot inside the downtown San Francisco Apple store just after iPad 2 buyers were let in.(Credit:James Martin/CNET) San Francisco 7:55 p.m. PT: The line now stretches completely up the block and around the side a bit, but not completely around the block as it did before. Part of the reason for that is probably because all the Wi-Fi-only models in both colors are completely sold out. All that remains are all capacities and all colors of the 3G models on Verizon's network and the black 64GB model on AT&T. One salesperson told us "we have tons of Verizon, in both colors." They have all colors of Smart Covers in stock. That's a wrap for now from San Francisco. Stay tuned for a post-game story about the overall iPad 2 sales launch.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--Enduring the heat of re-entry one last time, the shuttle Discovery dropped out of orbit and returned to Earth today to wrap up a near-flawless 39th and final mission, marking the beginning of the end for NASA's winged rocket ships. After firing its twin braking rockets for a computer-controlled descent halfway around the planet, commander Steven Lindsey took over manual control and guided Discovery through a 250-degree left turn to line up on runway 15.Pilot Eric Boe then deployed the ship's landing gear and the 204,000-pound shuttle swooped to a tire-smoking touchdown on runway 15 at 11:57:17 a.m. EST.The shuttle Discovery settles to a smooth touchdown at the Kennedy Space Center to close out its 39th and final flight.(Credit:NASA)Lindsey had no problems with a stiff 25-knot headwind, and a few moments later, NASA's oldest surviving space shuttle rolled to a halt, wrapping up a career spanning some 5,750 orbits, 148 million miles, and 365 days in space during 39 missions since its maiden launch in August 1984."And Houston, Discovery, for the final time, wheels stopped," Lindsey radioed flight controllers in Houston."Discovery, Houston, great job by you and your crew," replied astronaut Charles Hobaugh in mission control. "That was a great landing in tough conditions and it was an awesome docked mission you all had...So job well done."With only two more missions left on NASA's shuttle manifest--a flight by Endeavour in April and a final voyage by Atlantis in late June--Discovery's landing marked the beginning of the end for the world's most complex and expensive to operate manned rocket."We're seeing a program come to a close here and to see these shuttles, these beautiful, magnificent flying machines end their service life is obviously a little bit sad for us," astronaut Michael Barratt said earlier this week."But it is about time, they've lived a very long time, they've had a fabulous success record, they've built this magnificent space station, they've given us lots of science and a tremendous amount of experience of just how to operate in space. More than anything, we look forward to seeing them retire with dignity and bringing on the next line of spaceships."Discovery races down runway 15, rolling out on its final landing at the Kennedy Space Center.(Credit:NASA/Bill Ingalls)Lindsey, Boe, Barratt and their crewmates--Nicole Stott and spacewalkers Stephen Bowen and Alvin Drew--were welcomed home by NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and scores of other agency managers and engineers who turned out for Discovery's final homecoming."This is a pretty bittersweet moment for all of us," Lindsey said on the runway. "As the minutes pass, I'm getting sadder and sadder about this being the last flight. And I know all the folks involved in the shuttle program feel the same way."Lindsey thanked Discovery's processing team at the Kennedy Space Center for "giving us just a fantastic vehicle to fly. It was a privilege to be in charge of her for just a couple of weeks and I'm sad to give her back. But I couldn't imagine giving her back into better hands than this group right here."Over the course of an extended 13-day mission, Lindsey and his crewmates attached a final U.S. module to the International Space Station, delivered a spare set of radiator panels and an external stowage platform, and transferred several tons of supplies and equipment to the lab complex.Bowen and Drew also staged two spacewalks to accomplish a variety of long-planned maintenance tasks. And the astronauts helped their station colleagues service a U.S. oxygen generator and a carbon dioxide removal system. With Discovery safely back on Earth, engineers in the nearby Vehicle Assembly Building made final preparations to haul the shuttle Endeavour to launch pad 39A tomorrow for work to ready the ship for its 25th and final launch April 19.If all goes well, NASA will close out the shuttle program by launching the Atlantis June 28 on a final space station resupply mission.Discovery is towed back to its processing hangar for decommissioning.(Credit:NASA TV)Discovery's landing brought that long-awaited--and to some, long-dreaded--end game into sharp focus. Barratt captured the thoughts of many space workers when he reflected on the shuttle program's legacy from orbit."I think about this space shuttle fleet like the clipper ships that were strong and fast and powerful, they did their jobs but they were also graceful and beautiful," he said. "They conjured up imagination, of foreign travel, exotic places, of exploration. And Discovery is just an elite member of this elite fleet."We have the legacy of the clippers in our shuttle fleet and it's a legacy that everybody who's ever touched these vehicles should be extremely proud of. I think the only problem area there is we don't have that follow on, we're not replacing the shuttle with something and I think that's what makes it a little bit sad for us."At the same time, he said, "it is a time to celebrate.""The legacy this spaceship has made for herself is just nothing more than cause for celebration. She's returned so much science, so much experience, and the experience that we as crew members have had has just been marvelous and, again, something our country should be very, very proud of."Over the next few months, Discovery will be decommissioned and ultimately turned into a museum display.NASA has not yet announced where the orbiters will end up, but it's widely expected that one of them will be displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.NASA's space shuttle Discovery takes last flight (photos)

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Experian Hitwise)Just in case you haven't had your fill yet of top-10 lists and countdowns for 2010, today, courtesy of traffic company Experian Hitwise, we give you two more lists related to the Web: most-searched terms and top-visited sites in the U.S. for 2010.For the second year in a row, Facebook was the Internet's most-searched term in the U.S. between January and November, followed by a range of mostly navigational search terms: facebook login, youtube, craigslist, myspace, facebook.com, ebay, yahoo, www.facebook.com, and mapquest. In other words, iterations of Facebook grabbed four of the top 10 spots, according to the traffic company's annual survey of search queries. Overall, Hitwise found that social network-related terms dominated the results for most-searched terms in the U.S., accounting for 4.18 percent of the top 50 searches.New search terms in the top 50, according to Hitwise, included: netflix, verizon wireless, espn, chase, pogo, tagged, wells fargo, yellow pages, poptropica, games, and hulu. But lest you think Web users have gotten less tabloid-y, here's the juicy stuff: the top five people searches this year, in order, are: Kim Kardashian, Oprah, Rush Limbaugh, Miley Cyrus, and Glenn Beck.Moving on to top-visited sites, Facebook this year beat out Google for the most-visited Web site. Google was No. 2 on the list, followed by Yahoo Mail, Yahoo, YouTube, MSN, MySpace, Hotmail, Yahoo Search, and Bing.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Lance Whitney/CNET)Managing the passwords for all the Web sites you use is a neverending challenge, but one tool that can help is RoboForm. Siber Systems recently upgraded its popular password manager to version 7 with a variety of new features and enhancements. For those of you not familiar with the product, RoboForm lets you create, save, and use a different strong password for any Web site where you need to log in. Instead of you having to juggle dozens of different accounts, RoboForm does it for you, automatically filling in your username, password, and other details at each site. The new version offers a cleaner, simpler look and feel to its menus and toolbars and in the RoboForm Editor where you can browse, rename, delete, and modify all of your Web site accounts. Previous versions of RoboForm directly supported only Internet Explorer andFirefox. Version 7 now fully works in Google Chrome and Opera 10 (but not yet 11).RoboForm 7 now offers a bookmark feature, letting you use and synchronize the same bookmarks across multiple browsers and PCs. A new multiple login feature lets you connect to several commonly used Web sites in one shot.I run RoboForm on several PCs, so in the past I've had to buy a separate license for each one. But now the company offers a new option called RoboForm Everywhere, which lets you install the software on as many PCs as you'd like for one annual subscription. This feature stores your passwords on RoboForm's cloud-based system where they can sync with your various PCs.Beyond the pros, I did find a few cons with the new version. The integration with Chrome didn't always work smoothly. My customized Google home page includes modules and gadgets for different Web sites and accounts. In IE and Firefox, RoboForm is able to see and log me in to each module separately. But using Chrome, RoboForm couldn't detect the fields for username and password in each individual module, preventing me from logging in to those sites.RoboForm will run on theMac, though it supports Firefox and Chrome for the Mac only through the use of extensions that are more limited in functionality compared with the full program. Finally, I wish Siber didn't require RoboForm Everywhere to store account credentials in the cloud. I'd prefer not to keep all my passwords on one lone server and just be able to sync them locally among my different PCs.Siber offers a free version of RoboForm but limits you to just 10 login accounts. The full Pro Desktop version will set you back $29.95, while RoboForm Everywhere costs $19.95 per year ($9.95 the first year). Overall, RoboForm 7 is a solid upgrade to an already effective product and a good way to make sure your passwords are secure and easy to use.

0 Vote(s)

Whistleblower WikiLeaks said today its Web site has been targeted by a massive computer attack, just hours before an expected release of classified U.S. documents."We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack," WikiLeaks said on its Twitter feed. Efforts to reach the page as of this writing were unsuccessful. The site released 75,000 confidential files on the war in Afghanistan in July and defied a series of warnings from the Pentagon and other government officials by releasing nearly 400,000 secret files from the Iraq war last month. In a Twitter post last week, the whistleblower site announced it was preparing to release its largest cache of classified documents."Next release is 7x the size of the Iraq War Logs. Intense pressure over it for months," WikiLeaks said last week.In a follow-up Twitter post today, WikiLeaks said newspapers such as El Pais, Le Monde, Der Speigel, The Guardian, and the New York Times would post the files, even if its site was inaccessible. (Update at 1:30 p.m. PT: The files have since been released, revealing that the U.S. ordered surveillance of U.N. leaders.)The White House has condemned the leaks, saying they put lives at risk, and conservative commentators argued that Wikileaks.org should be shut down by any means necessary. The WikiLeaks Web site has in the past been proposed as the first public target for a U.S. government cyberattack. One Washington newspaper argued that WikiLeaks' offshore Web site should be attacked and rendered "inoperable" by the U.S. government. A State Department adviser under President George W. Bush wrote a column calling on the U.S. military to "electronically assault WikiLeaks and any telecommunications company offering its services to this organization." Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence specialist, is suspected of being a source for the document-sharing Web site and was charged in June with obtaining "more than 150,000 diplomatic cables" from the State Department.

0 Vote(s)

In a sign that the new airport screening procedures may be altered, two key politicians told the Transportation Security Administration today that the rules may be unconstitutional and a waste of government resources."We are concerned about the new enhanced pat-down screening protocols and urge you to reconsider the utilization of these protocols," Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the influential chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.), chairman of a transportation subcommittee, told the TSA in a letter (PDF). They asked TSA to turn over internal documents, studies, and traveler complaints by December 1.As the Thanksgiving travel season nears, the reaction to TSA's new procedures has been visceral and sharply critical, driven by cell phone recordings of security line incidents, privacy and health concerns, and Web sites including the Drudge Report, which published a photograph of a hands-on examination of a nun with the caption: "THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON." Monday's Colbert Report called them machines "that X-ray your X-rated parts," and a software engineer from Oceanside, Calif. became an Internet sensation after telling a TSA screener: "If you touch my junk, I'll have you arrested." (The procedures announced late last month include pat-downs that can touch genitals and full-body scanners that use X-rays.)The letter demonstrates how some of the agency's political cover is evaporating and could signal a turning point in the protest among Washington politicians. On the other hand, it focuses only on the police-style physical searches, and neither Thompson nor Jackson Lee mentioned the controversial X-ray scanners. For its part, the TSA shows no visible signs of backing down. It declined to answer questions from CNET this afternoon.A statement from TSA chief John Pistole said, "All pat-downs are done professionally and are designed to detect hidden explosives that could bring down a plane. Only a small percentage of passengers end up needing them. Pat-downs have long been one of the many security measures TSA and virtually every other nation has used in its risk-based approach to help detect hidden and dangerous items."Today's letter from the two House Democrats is an abrupt-about face from hearings held just a few days ago, in which Senate Democrats steadfastly backed the Obama administration."I think you're doing a terrific job," Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat and chairman of the Senate committee overseeing air travel, told Pistole, a former FBI agent who's had the job since July. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said a few minutes later that Americans "have to understand that this is being done for their best interests and their safety."That echoed what Sen. Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said a day earlier. As CNET previously reported, he said the TSA is "doing the right thing," and that the scans and more invasive pat-downs are "necessary for the security--homeland security--of the American people." (Lieberman is an independent senator from Connecticut who caucuses with Democrats.)Since those pair of hearings, though, the public outcry has continued to grow, with new reports of Americans' encounters with TSA screeners popping up on the Internet, grabbing news headlines, and providing cable TV hosts with a series of anecdotes and poor-quality recordings of security line incidents. Amateur videos posted on YouTube, including one of a screaming 3-year-old (apparently not even a recent one) being treated none too gently by an airport screener, and bloggers describing how they were "sexually assaulted" after vaginal and labial touching, have put the agency in an unusually difficult position. A Washington Times editorial was titled "Big Sister's police state," and a Forbes writer called for abolishing the TSA outright. This image of an adult man was taken using a Rapiscan Secure 1000 backscatter X-ray scanner.(Credit:John Wild (johnwild.info))One Web site, OptOutDay.com, is recommending what might be called strict civil obedience: it suggests that all air travelers on November 24, the day before Thanksgiving, choose "to opt out of the naked body scanner machines" that amount to "virtual strip searches." Nudeoscope.com, DontScan.us, and StopDigitalStripSearches.org are organizing their own protests. Thanks to the federal stimulus legislation, TSA has been able to buy nearly 400 whole-body scanners and install them in approximately 70 airports around the country. A few weeks ago, with only a one-paragraph mention on the TSA's Web site, the screening procedures were changed to offer air travelers a choice of either full-body scans or what the TSA delicately calls "enhanced pat-downs."

0 Vote(s)

The Nokia N8, a Symbian smartphone(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)The first updates to current Symbian phones will appear in the first half of next year, Nokia said today. At the Symbian Exchange and Exposition in Amsterdam, the handset manufacturer--which said yesterday that it was bringing development of Symbian back in-house--said the first updates would include the addition of split-screen text entry, a Qwerty keyboard that works when the phone is in portrait mode, integrated Swype input, and a new browser.New Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop revealed in October that there would no longer be a sharp break between Symbian^3--the version found in handsets including the N8 and C7--and what was to be the upcoming Symbian^4. Instead, Symbian^4 has been scrapped and features that were due to be released in that version will be gradually added to the current handset range, so as to improve the user experience.See also: "Nokia: We will define 'open' for Symbian" Read more of "Nokia times first Symbian updates for 'early 2011'" at ZDNet UK.

0 Vote(s)

Back in August, Google launched Priority Inbox, a feature that automatically flags messages that Gmail believes you&'ll be most interested in. It&'s a great feature a4" Google says it cuts down the amount of time users spend reading email by 15% a4" but until now it hasn&'t really been available on Android, which features an otherwise great Gmail app. Today, that changes, as Google brings Priority Inbox to Android. If you&'ve used Priority Inbox on the web, this will be pretty familiar. Messages in your inbox that Gmail thinks are important are tagged with arrows in the normal &8216'inbox&' view. And if you want to only look at the important messages, you can jump to the &8216'Priority Inbox&' label (you can also set this to your default). Some other new features: you can now tell Gmail to notify you (via a vibration or sound) whenever you receive messages in your Priority Inbox' but spam and less important messages won&'t activate the alert. Google has also made it easier to select options like &8216'reply all&'.You&'ll notice that Gmail for Android is getting more frequent updates now a4"a4sit was only a few months ago that it got its last update. Prior to that, the app had been tied directly with Android&'s operating system, which was a problem because many users don&'t get the latest version of the OS for many months after they&'re released (if ever).Of course, even with the decoupling of the app and the OS this update requires Android 2.2, which only 43.4% of Android phones are currently running, so not everyone will be able to use it. But it&'s still better than only giving the Gmail upgrade to users on Gingerbread, which is only supported by the Nexus S at this point.CrunchBase InformationGoogleGmailInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Hewlett-Packard They&'re just a minor roadblock, according to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. After easily beating the expectations of many analysts with its most recent earnings report, Oracle is setting its sights on capturing market share and claiming HP&'s spot of number two database hardware and software provider behind IBM.Net income for Oracle jumped 28 percent to $1.87 billion in its second quarter of 2011, up from $1.46 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, according to its most recent financial statement. Oracle&'s operating revenue also rose 47 percent to $8.6 billion in its most recent quarter, compared to $5.9 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.Oracle continues to successfully fend off the public cloud (which allows developers and companies to offload storage and heavy-duty computing to remote servers at a lower cost) said Oracle president Mark Hurd on the company&'s earnings conference call. Some of its servers and accompanying software can cost upwards of $1 million. But the strategy seems to be working. Its most recent line of servers and software is able to run more than 30 million online transactions per minute, shattering the previous record of 10 million transactions per minute set by IBM.&''We expect overall that our new generation of SUN machines, Exadata, Exalogic and SPARC will enable us to win significant share in the high-end server market,&'' Ellison said. &''That will put us in the number 2 position very soon behind IBM, then we&'ll fight it out for the number 1 spot.&''Despite the popularity of the public cloud, servers and databases that are run in-house are usually faster and easier to access. A number of security concerns prevent some of the largest companies in the world a4" big targets for Oracle&'s hardware and software products a4" from jumping on board the public cloud. Those are companies that can afford the massive price-tags of Oracle&'s software and hardware and have the staff to install and maintain them.HP, which is second in market share at this point because of its legacy in servers, came a distant third in speed with 4 million transactions per minute, Ellison said. Despite the presence of former HP CEO Hurd on the conference call, Ellison did not mince words when it came to HP&'s servers. He said they were downright terrible when compared to Oracle&'s new products and IBM&'s servers and software.&''HP&'s servers are slow, expensive and have little or no software, that makes them vulnerable to market share,&'' Ellison said. &''All our new servers are engineered to run databases and middleware faster than HP and IBM.&''But even with its success with on-premise database hardware and software, Oracle isn&'t going to shy away from the public cloud. It&'s releasing a suite of applications called Oracle Fusion that can run on in-house hardware and public cloud servers. Ellison said he expects it to compete with Salesforce and other public cloud applications beginning next year.&''You&'re just seeing the beginning of us getting share in applications,&'' he said.Investors loved the news, sending Oracle&'s shares up about 4 percent to $31.45 in extended trading.Next Story: Facebook&'s new login for the Web could ruffle feathers Previous Story: Take-Two follows a profitable 2010 with stellar 2011 games lineupPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CRM, customer relationship management, database software, databases, private cloud, public cloud, serversCompanies: HP, IBM, Oracle, salesforcePeople: Larry Ellison, Mark Hurd Tags: CRM, customer relationship management, database software, databases, private cloud, public cloud, serversCompanies: HP, IBM, Oracle, salesforcePeople: Larry Ellison, Mark HurdMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.

With iOS 4.2 finally out in the wild, the iPad has effectively been&nbsp'rejuvenated. And there&'s no question that Apple is going to sell a massive amount of them during the Holiday shopping season. But what comes next Well, the iPad 2, of course. You don&'t need to be an analyst looking for inside information to know that Apple has a pretty standard policy of refreshing their product lines about once a year. And with iOS devices, it&'s more or less clockwork. Since the iPad was released in early April last year, that&'s the most obvious target for when the iPad 2 will hit. But there&'s a side question that will go along with that launch: what will happen to the iPad 1 Will it go cheap Or will it go extinctEssentially, the question is whether Apple will follow the iPhone model, or whether they&'ll follow the iPod touch model. The iPhone is updated each year, and since the launch of the iPhone 3GS 18 months ago, Apple has been deeply discounting the previous generation model while keeping it available for sale. With the iPod touch, they don&'t do that. Once it&'s updated, the old inventory runs dry and isn&'t replenished' the new one takes its place. Now, there&'s a good reason for Apple to do that for the iPhone. The idea of a sub-$100 smartphone is very sexy to a lot of consumers a4" especially if it&'s an iPhone, which carries the allure of an Apple product. All indications are that the newer models (which sell for $199 and $299) easily outsell the $99 version, but it helps Apple to more fully cover the market. And given Apple&'s huge margins, they still likely make a pretty penny on the $99 iPhone.Of course, a huge reason for that is the subsidy paid to them by AT&amp'T (in the U.S., anyway) on the device. The iPad is different. There is a 3G version, but it&'s not subsidized by any carrier. In fact, it&'s more expensive to the consumer a4" both in&nbsp'initial&nbsp'price, and the need to pay a monthly cellular fee. In other words, any cost eaten on selling a cheaper iPad, would be Apple&'s alone. And the iPad is already an interesting product for Apple in the sense that it has a lower margin than they&'re typically used to. Apple very aggressively priced the iPad out of the gate with prices starting at $499, which was much less than many people had been anticipating. Of course, most accounts still have Apple making close to a 50 percent margin on the device. And with costs presumably coming down over time, they probably have some room to sell a cheaper version if they wanted to.But how cheap$100 off is the obvious choice. But would a $399 iPad really be all that more enticing than a $499 iPad It might not seem so, but those type of price cuts have long worked in the video game console business. And, if looked at a certain way, the iPad is already one hell of a video game console. One that can do about 100 other things too.But initial video game console cuts usually come before the follow-up product is on the market. A $199 Xbox looks awesome compared to a $299 Xbox. But if it were a $199 Xbox versus a $299 Xbox 360, it might not look so hot. That&'s what Apple would have to contend with. A $399 iPad versus a $499 iPad 2.What if they shaved $200 off the price Given what the margins are currently thought to be, that would seem to be impossible for Apple. But remember that 2011 is likely to see an onslaught of competition in the tablet space. Rivals RIM and Microsoft are both slated to make major pushes into the tablet space. And, of course, Android will be coming full charge.Apple CEO Steve Jobs is quick to point out now that no one can match their tablet prices. But next year, some of these competitors likely will a4" and some will even go below them. Apple could blow them out of the water with a $299 iPad 1. While at the same time, keeping the watermark very high with the $499 iPad 2.As we all know, Apple is a company that has always favored profits over marketshare. So maybe the $299 iPad is completely out of the question. But again, with the iPad, they&'ve taken a little bit different approach, and shaved margins down. It&'s something which has caused a few jitters amongst Wall Street analysts. Even with component prices coming way down, a $299 iPad would probably have razor-thin margins. And that just doesn&'t sound like Apple. And, of course, there&'s the other scenario. What if Apple decides simply to kill off the iPad 1 when the iPad 2 comes along That may not be nearly as fun for my juicy speculation game, but it&'s at least just as likely of a scenario. Perhaps even more likely given the margin picture and the lack of carrier subsidy. It just seems as if Apple is so far ahead in the tablet space right now with the iPad 1, that it would be a shame to kill it off without opening it up to even more users at a lower price point. But Apple makes moves like that all the time.&nbsp'Along those lines, here&'s a favorite Jobs quote of mine from a Wired article looking back at 25 years of the Mac:When I got back here in 1997, I was looking for more room, and I found an archive of old Macs and other stuff. I said, a4Get it away!a4a4 and I shipped all that shit off to Stanford. If you look backward in this business, youa4a4ll be crushed. You have to look forward. It&'s not about nostalgia, it&'s about the future. And the future is the iPad 2.[photos: flickr/bfishadow and flickr/mapgoblin]CrunchBase InformationiPadAppleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

This morning News Corp finally announced its highly anticipated iPad newspaper app, The Daily.Rupert Murdoch hit the stage at a special press event in New York to talk about why he wanted to create an iPad-specific publication. &''New times require new journalism. Our challenge was to take the best of conventional journalism &8230' and combine it with the best of new technology,&'' he said. &''Our aim is for The Daily to be the indispensable source for news, information, and entertainment.&''Murdoch said The Daily will cost just 14 cents a day (99 cents a week, or $39.99 annually), and emphasized that there are no costs for distribution like there are with traditional dead tree newspapers. News Corp.&'s target audience is the &''more than 15 million Americans who are expected to own tablets in the next year.&''Murdoch said he&'ll be able to determine if The Daily is a success once he sells millions (big surprise). He said that News Corp. has spent $30 million on the project so far, and it will run at a cost of $500,000 weekly. As of a few minutes ago, The Daily app is live on the iTunes Store. Thanks to a sponsorship with Verizon, the app will be free for the first two weeks. (It&'s unclear if this means the next two weeks, or the first two weeks after users download the app.)The Daily&'s editor-in-chief Jesse Angelo, publisher Greg Clayman, and executive creative director John Kilpatrick next hit the stage to demonstrate the app. They say that they&'ve been doing live production for six weeks with staff working around the clock. &''We have people from television, from newspapers and magazines, working hand in hand with designers and developers. The iPad allows us to tell stories in different ways than we did before.&''They demonstrated 360-degree photographs and high-definition videos, content that&'s very well suited to tablets. The Daily will produce up to 100 pages of new content every day. News Corp. has developed some innovative ways to find content, including a carousel of pages, a shuffle button to bring up unread stories, a television-like news anchor and an audio button to read you stories.&''The Daily is not an island,&'' they said. You&'ll be able to share stories on Facebook, Twitter and via email. You&'ll also be able to record audio comments. The app features a built-in web browser, and certain pages also include Twitter feeds. There&'s also an apps and games section to The Daily, which will link you directly to the iTunes Store.Eddy Cue, vice president of interactive services at Apple, joined them on stage to confirm that Apple was also very excited about The Daily. He said that Apple has built a subscription billing option &8212' a first for any iOS device &8212' that&'s &''as easy as one click.&'' The subscription feature will make its way to other publications soon. When asked how back issues are handled, Daily editors said that for now all of the content for the paper is on the web. You&'ll be able to save articles, but it sounds like that&'s akin to a bookmark. They&'re working towards putting more content on internal storage, so you&'ll be able to view it without an internet connection, in future versions. When asked if The Daily will ever make its way to other tablets, Murdoch said, &''As other tablets get developed, we will develop the technology to get there.&''As for sharing content from The Daily, the editors said that when you share a specific story, friends will be able to see it on the web. General web users won&'t be able to access those stories otherwise, and they can&'t just browse around The Daily&'s content from the web. It&'ll be interesting to see how this works out &8212' one of the longstanding arguments against something like The Daily has been that it will keep content out of the free web. This current method seems like a balance between being closed and completely open. When asked why News Corp. didn&'t just make The Daily free and ad-supported, Murdoch said that advertisers would probably lower their rates if it was free. Now, he says, the company will be able to get a better class of advertisers at higher rates. At first he expects subscription revenues to amount for more than ads, but eventually he hopes for it move towards 50/50.Via EngadgetNext Story: VCs flocking to mobile photos: Instagram raises $7M Previous Story: Ning adds lots of knobs and dials to prettify its custom social networksPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPad, newspaper, The DailyCompanies: Apple, News CorpPeople: Rupert Murdoch Tags: iOS, iPad, newspaper, The DailyCompanies: Apple, News CorpPeople: Rupert MurdochDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
a4AThe playlist ran out on my computer, and I thought, a4You know, therea4a4s really no reason why my computer shouldna4a4t just know what I want to learn next,&'' he explains. a4ASo thata4a4s what we made.a4&8211' Mark Zuckerberg, Harvard Crimson interview, 2004Above is the Team page for Synapse, the Pandora-like music recommendation plugin Mark Zuckerberg and former Facebook engineer and Quora founder Adam D&'Angelo built in 2002, while they were in high school together. You can access the entire site through thea4sWeb Archive here.a4sAol, Microsoft and WinAmp all expressed interest in buying the WinAmp program and Zuckerberg and D&'Angelo reportedly received up offers of up to 2 million dollars, which they famously turned down.Items in the above image presented without commentary: The fact that high school student D&'Angelo is described as being &''hung like a horse.&'' The consistent references to &''Programmer Gods&'' woven throughout the site. The fact that the Synapse slogan is &''My brain is better than yours.&'' The Coolio reference. Whatever &''If you hit it and that thing feels deeper, say his name&'' means (shudder).Hey, we&'ve all written strange things on the Internet, and most of us would have lived our lives differently had we known they would one day be searchable (or in this case, Wayback Machine-able). However, what is most interesting about this Team page is the fact that D&'Angelo&'s Quora and Zuckerberg&'s Facebook are now in direct competition over their respective Q&amp'A products. And there seems to be some contention over just how friendly this competition is: Facebook&'s Director of Product Blake Ross is the subject of an entire thread on Quora called &''The Oct 2010 Blake Ross Quoragate Farrago&'' where there is much speculation over exactly why he was unable to login to Quora and why his account there was deleted in early October. There&'s also lot of talk on Quora AND Facebook Questions about a possible dispute between Facebook and Quora, with one thread accusing Facebook of blocking Quora users from gaining access to Questions over the summer.Ross tells TechCrunch that this is not the case and that, &''We don&'t feel animosity toward Quora. It&'s a terrific product. I worked closely with all of the founders in the past. I wish the media would stop trying to turn Silicon Valley into TMZ.&'' Ross also tells TechCrunch that whatever happened with his Quora account has &''been resolved.&'' Yet he still doesn&'t know what exactly happened to his account. Busy Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who recently asked his first Facebook Question, hasn&'t been active on Quora since January 2009.No matter whata4sQuora or Facebook Questions thread you subscribe to, the reality is that Facebook Questions, if rolled out to all users and executed correctly, could kill Quora. The Facebook Questions beta currently has one million users, while the Quora site has around 155K (very passionate) users.Facebook wins the numbers game by default, but many hold that Quora retains a better user experience in terms of quality of answers and a strong community &8212' So it remains to be seen which former Synapse co-founder will ultimately be &''the king of the spreadsheets,&'' at least in the Q&amp'A space.CrunchBase InformationMark ZuckerbergAdam D&039'AngeloBlake RossFacebookQuoraInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
