Google's going to do its part to reduce the unemployment rate in 2011, declaring plans to hire more people this year than it ever has before.Google&39's Alan Eustace(Credit:Google) Worrying about the economy is so 2008, said Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research, in a blog post today outlining plans for "our biggest hiring year in company history." Like most companies, Google scaled back its hiring after hitting a high-water mark in 2007 with slightly more than 6,000 new employees, but after adding 4,500 people in 2010 it vowed to get back to those pre-bust levels this year. Hiring will be "across the board and around the globe," Eustace said. Google's career Web pages list openings in seemingly every discipline' focused heavily on engineering and its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, as one might expect, but with plenty of openings in other careers and geographies. It was impossible to miss the undercurrent to Eustace's post: Google now faces much more competition for employees in both its home region and around the world as other Internet companies--places like Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, and Groupon--build mega-businesses of their own. While working at Google certainly has its perks, those companies offer something Google simply can't: the prospect of a major stock payday through an IPO or private sale. Eustace was careful to emphasize that Google employees work in small project teams "effectively working as start-ups," probably hoping to dent recent criticism of Google as an increasingly bureaucratic place where it's harder to get good ideas in front of decision makers. That was one reason cited by Google's outgoing CEO Eric Schmidt for passing the torch to co-founder Larry Page, writing in a blog post last week that a change was needed to "simplify our management structure and speed up decision making." "Google is still the same entrepreneurial company it was when I started, encouraging Googlers to take on big ideas and high-risk, high-reward opportunities," Eustace wrote. Last week Google said that as of the end of 2010, 24,400 people worked for the company.

0 Vote(s)

Like the New York Yankees and pungent curries, it is not easy to love the Dallas Cowboys.Somehow, they seem hell bent on proving that everything really is bigger in Texas. Including, some believe, mouths. They have built a new stadium at which parking is $75 and pizzas a mere $60 (oh, of course they're 20 inches). They constantly seem to act as if they are rather more important than other NFL teams, more important than any other sports team anywhere. Which might make some people curious that the Cowboys have often been referred to as "America's team." While you might ponder what that says about America, may I tell you that the Cowboys are a dreadful team this year. Sunday, they lost again, making it just one win in their first eight games. You must decide whether it was all this excitement--or some strange and sudden inherent mediocrity--that caused the Cowboys some technological embarrassment. For those who wondered whether head coach Wade Phillips would be--or even had been--fired Sunday, were unable to find out at DallasCowboys.com. Yes, the world&39's biggest LED screen is at the new Cowboys Stadium. Not the second biggest.(Credit:CC David Jones/Flickr)According to the Dallas Morning News, the team had forgotten to renew the domain. Which meant that DallasCowboys.com was adorned with a picture of two little boys playing soccer and a suggestion that it was for sale.Naturally, these things can happen at the finest of organizations. It's just like a CEO forgetting he's married and carrying on with some likable Latvian lady at a function. But CNBC reported that the domain expired November 2, and Network Solutions, the domain host, waited until Sunday before chop-blocking the site.It seems the company hoped the Cowboys would pull it out in overtime. Sadly, it was not to be. And yesterday, fans were frustrated not to be able to read about the firing of coach Wade Phillips on their most beloved site. The bill has now been paid. The site is now back up. So loyal Cowboys fans can go to it and read that current quarterback Jon Kitna feels "terrible," that owner Jerry Jones has said there will be "consequences," and that wide receiver Miles Austin declared: "Hopefully, it's a good thing."I have no reason to believe they were referring to the return to life of DallasCowboys.com.

0 Vote(s)

Americans, little by little, are cutting the proverbial cord on cable television. But that doesn't mean they're breaking up with their cable companies. In addition to controlling most of the paid TV market in the U.S., cable companies are also poised to dominate the broadband market. This means that even when people drop their pricey cable TV packages, they're still likely to pay the cable company for access to the Internet, which is used to deliver the video streams to their TVs. For cable operators, it's a "heads we win' tails we win" situation.Neil Smit, president of Comcast's cable division, admitted as much during the company's third quarter conference call earlier this week."If over-the-top comes into being, there is more consumption of online video," Smit said. "We feel very good about our capacity. That is one of the reasons we have invested so heavily in DOCSIS 3 (the cable technology that allows operators to provide download broadband speeds up to 160Mbps). We feel that that big pipe into the house is important and we will continue to invest in speed increases like that, like DOCSIS 3. We think it's an important component and the consumers continue to consume more bandwidth."So what does that mean for average consumers For those of us left behind with traditional cable services, it could well mean that the cable companies increase fees in order to pay for the contracts they have with content producers like the TV networks. For those who do leave cable TV, there's a very good chance they're paying the same provider for a different service--broadband access."People should not think of cable companies as media companies," said Craig Moffett, a senior analyst at Wall Street equities research firm Sanford C. Bernstein. "They are infrastructure companies. And they are in business to make a return on their physical infrastructure." But instead of simply raising prices on cable broadband, Moffett said it's more likely that cable operators would move toward usage-based pricing. That way consumers who use more bandwidth to stream movies and TV shows end up paying more per month for service than people who may be getting their video from the traditional cable TV network. Time Warner has tested usage-based billing, but the company faced a huge backlash from consumers. Still, Moffett said that broadband service providers may have no choice as bandwidth-intensive video streaming services like Netflix become more popular. Sandvine recently issued a report showing that Netflix traffic already accounts for more than 20 percent of downstream traffic during peak times on U.S. broadband networks. Of course, the number of people today who are cutting their cable cord and watching TV from the Internet is still small. But people are cutting the cable cord. Just ask Comcast, which went on the defensive earlier this week explaining why it lost a net of about 56,000 TV subscribers during the third quarter of 2010. (Comcast announced it had lost 275,000 basic cable subscriptions during the third quarter. Meanwhile it added 219,000 digital TV subscribers. This means that it lost a net of about 56,000 video subscribers during the quarter.)"All our exit surveys have seen almost no impact (from people switching to Internet TV)," Smits said during the conference call. "We have seen customers who are disconnecting and not going to a competitor. That small number of customers appear to be going over-the-air (using antennas to get free TV) much more than any over-the-top impact (TV from the Net)." Even though Comcast denies these people are flocking to sites such as Netflix, they have admitted that the weak economy is driving them toward less expensive forms of entertainment. As more content deals are struck with companies such as Netflix, people looking to save a buck on TV, and who also have a broadband connection, will likely gravitate toward the Web for TV and movie viewing. Netflix, which is just one of many over-the-top video options available to consumers, is quickly expanding its customer base. During the third quarter the company saw its subscriber base jump 52 percent compared to a year ago.Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings said on the company's earnings call earlier this month that the streaming offer was definitely fueling subscriber growth. Netflix said 66 percent of its subscribers used its streaming content during the third quarter, up from 61 percent in the second quarter and 41 percent during the same quarter a year ago.Broadband benefitsBut regardless of whether this trend continues, Comcast and other cable companies are likely to benefit since they also control the broadband connection into the home. The phone companies' biggest weapon in the broadband fight has been their new fiber-based networks: U-verse for AT&T and Fios for Verizon. These services have competed head-to-head with cable in markets where they're available. But neither AT&T nor Verizon is covering its entire territory with these expensive network upgrades, which means that many customers without access to U-verse or Fios services have the choice of slower DSL or cable. As the numbers show, many are choosing cable. During the second quarter of 2010, cable captured a record 90 percent of all new broadband additions, according to a report Moffett wrote."Cable's broadband dominance opens the door for renewed share gains in the adjacent video market."--Craig Moffett, senior analyst, Sanford C. Bernstein. "Cable's broadband dominance opens the door for renewed share gains in the adjacent video market," Moffett said in his report. "Cable companies could simply increase their a la carte broadband prices (since in most markets, households have no other choice for sufficiently fast broadband) and simultaneously drop their video pricing, leaving the price of the bundle unchanged, to recapture video share."He pointed to an example of this in Albany, N.Y., where Time Warner Cable raised its broadband price by 10 percent for its Internet-only customers to a rate just $2 below its promotional bundled rate for both services. The Internet-only price increased to $54.95 from $49.95. The 12-month promotional rate for video and data was $56.95.Even without changing its pricing, cable companies are starting to see consumers choose more expensive services with faster speeds. Smits said during the company conference call that more than 20 percent of Comcast's customers subscribe to higher speed tiers of services. He considers the "blast level" services to be 8 Mbps and above. As a result the company saw an increase in the average revenue per user of its broadband services. And with faster 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps speeds on the way, the company has a lot of leg room to up-sell broadband consumers.Of course, Comcast and the rest of the cable industry are not giving up on their TV business. This week Comcast relaunched Xfinity TV, the company's TV-everywhere on-demand video service. It provides access to 150,000 movies, TV shows, and other premium HD content online and can be viewed on various different devices such as laptops and tablets. The service is available to digital video customers who will get an ID and access to the service at no extra charge. By the end of this year, the company expects to have the service available on Apple iPhones and iPads as well as Android tablets. The company is also improving its user guide and constantly adding new titles to its video-on-demand service. For the time being, it does not see Netflix or any other Internet-based TV service as a threat. "I think even Netflix on their own call felt that they were more complementary than anything else to the existing marketplace," Brian Roberts, Comcast CEO said during the conference call. "I think you are also seeing an expansion of usage as you can use more devices. We are very excited about devices like theiPad. It gives us a chance to now start from scratch with a user interface that is using Web technology, not cable box technology."

0 Vote(s)

Florida has officially banned jurors from tweeting.New jury instructions adopted by the Supreme Court of Florida, which judges will pass along to jurors, instruct them not to discuss the case through "electronic communication, such as a blog, Twitter, e-mail, text message, or any other means."Tweeting (or Facebooking, or blogging) about cases has happened, of course. An Ohio man convicted of drunk driving unsuccessfully tried to get a new trial after a juror blogged about the case. A New Hampshire juror was caught calling criminal defendants "riff-raff."A judge removed a juror after she reportedly posted on Facebook: "Gonna be fun to tell the defendant they're guilty." And a Georgia federal judge banned even spectators from sending live updates through Twitter from the courtroom. Here are some excerpts from Florida's new juror instructions released October 21: During deliberations, jurors must communicate about the case only with one another and only when all jurors are present in the jury room. You are not to communicate with any person outside the jury about this case. Until you have reached a verdict, you must not talk about this case in person or through the telephone, writing, or electronic communication, such as a blog, Twitter, e-mail, text message, or any other means. Do not contact anyone to assist you during deliberations. These communications rules apply until I discharge you at the end of the case. If you become aware of any violation of these instructions or any other instruction I have given in this case, you must tell me by giving a note to the bailiff. In reaching your decision, do not do any research on your own or as a group. Do not use dictionaries, the Internet, or any other reference materials. Do not investigate the case or conduct any experiments...Do not visit or view the scene of any event involved in this case or look at maps or pictures on the Internet. If you happen to pass by the scene, do not stop or investigate.Jurors must not have discussions of any sort with friends or family members about the case or the people and places involved. So, do not let even the closest family members make comments to you or ask questions about the trial. In this age of electronic communication, I want to stress again that just as you must not talk about this case face-to-face, you must not talk about this case by using an electronic device. You must not use phones, computers or other electronic devices to communicate. Do not send or accept any messages related to this case or your jury service. Do not discuss this case or ask for advice by any means at all, including posting information on an Internet website, chat room or blog.

0 Vote(s)

You&39'll need to set up your BlackBerry ID and a plug-in before you can send downloads to your BlackBerry smartphone.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)We've known for quite some time that RIM would update its BlackBerry App World storefront online to provide Web-to-phone downloads. That day is today. RIM has implemented BlackBerry App World 2.0, which lets you purchase and download apps from the computer. But before you dive in, you'll need to go through a setup process to register your BlackBerry ID (if you don't already have one) and install a browser plug-in to facilitate the PC-to-phone transfer. You'll also need to plug your phone into the computer during setup and make sure you have the most recent version of App World on your BlackBerry. After that, pressing the Download button on a product page in the App World online storefront should trigger a download. In addition to purchasing apps online for BlackBerry download, the App World 2.0 catalog lets you access reviews and recommendations and gives you a My World management page that's linked to your account.Previously, the online App World catalog brokered downloads on your BlackBerry in a roundabout way that helped little. Clicking the "Download" button triggered a text message that contained a link for the app's page in the App World App on your BlackBerry.RIM isn't the first to dream up remote PC-to-phone downloads. Google had that honor when it announced in May that the company is working on an update for its Android Market, but so far the only fruit of that labor has been the Chrome to Phone browser plug-in that can send snippets from Web sites to your Android phone.

0 Vote(s)

A few days ago, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave a talk at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine. During the talk, he mentioned Twitter a few times. When a question from the audience asked Ballmer when he was going to start Tweeting, he revealed that he actually already has an account. He then proceeded to Tweet right on stage. Twitter universe, say hello to Steve Ballmer.&''I have a Twitter account. I&'m just very private about who I really am on Twitter,&'' Ballmer said when asked. But then he went in a different direction and said he would Tweet from the stage. &''What do you want me to tweet I love KPI, how&'s that,&'' he asked. With that, he pulled out his new Windows Phone. &''All right. I love KPI. Now, you know how to find me on Twitter.&''Sure enough,&nbsp'Manan Kakkar did the Twitter search and seems to have tracked down Ballmer&'s Tweet. We have reached out to Microsoft to confirm that is Ballmer&'s account (his account has no picture and only says &''steve b&''), but Ballmer himself seemed to confirm the name on stage. &''But, you know the truth. Steve B. Microsoft up on Twitter,&'' is how the transcription reads. That&'s @stevebmicrosoft in Twitter-speak.Oddly enough, Ballmer apparently Tweeted right before the one done on stage with &''Ukraine today&''. That&'s odd because prior to that, he hadn&'t Tweeted since April 18, 2009 a4" about Russia. He then Tweeted one more time on November 5 and has been silent since. That&'s 4 Tweets, 842 followers, and 4 people he&'s following.
Books are becoming electronic like every other form of print media, but they still lag in their social skills. A startup called Rethink Books wants to incorporate sharing features into every electronic book and turn them into social books. I caught up with founders Jason Ilian and Jason Johnson today at the TedxEast conference in New York City, where they presented a demo f their yet-to-be-released product. I caught up with them in the hallway and got a quick demo which I captured on video. What CEO Ilian is showing is an iPad app, but this app could work on other devices, including e-readers. You see the familiar bookshelf with your books, but you can also connect with your friends on Twitter and Facebook and within the Social Books app itself to see what books are on their bookshelves. As you read a book, you can highlight and create notes, as well as see the highlights and notes of your friends (in different colors). Excerpts could be shared via Twitter or Facebook with a link back to an excerpt page, along with a link to buy the book. There is an activity stream view, where you can see all the comments and recent reading activities of the people you follow. We&'ve seen some of these concepts before. Digital comic book app Graphic.ly comes to mind.. And even the Kindle allows some sharing via Facebook and Twitter. But nobody has really turbocharged sharing for electronic books yet.Rethink Books isn&'t necessarily going to solve the problem, but at least they are approaching it in the right way. The company is approaching publishers who want to put out electronic book titles as individual apps, and Rethink is hoping to power the social sharing features of those books. If Apple and Amazon decide to open up their electronic book marketplaces, they could create a book reader for the their digital books as well. It seems unlikely that Amazon or Apple would ever do that because they want to control their respective digital book markets and offer a consistent experience. In a way, these social books remind me a little of Shelfari, the social reading service Amazon bought two years ago. But why isn&'t that built into the Kindle by now Maybe opening up digital bookstores to outside innovation isn&'t such a bad idea,CrunchBase InformationRethink BooksAmazon Kindle 2iPadInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Urban Airship, a startup that makes it easier for mobile app developers to offer push notifications, in-app purchases, and other key features, has closed a new $5.4 million funding round. The Series B round is being led by Foundry Group, with existing investors True Ventures and Founders Co-op also participating. Foundry Group&'s Managing Director Jason Mendelson will be joining Urban Airship&'s board. At a high level, Urban Airship lets mobile developers take advantage of popular (and powerful) features seen on modern mobile platforms like iOS and Android, without having to reinvent the wheel for each app. These services include managing push notification campaigns across apps running on multiple platforms (there&'s support for Android, BlackBerry, and iOS). So far, the company says it has distributed over 1 billion messages. Urban Airship also offers functionality related to monetization, including ever-popular in-app purchases. The most recent addition to Urban Airship&'sa4sfeature-seta4sis support for subscriptions, which are sure to play an important role for publishers in the coming years. The startup a4spowers the subscriptions seen on the recently-released Newsweek iPad application, which is the the first iPad periodical to feature them (don&'t be surprised if more publishers turn to the startup to power their subscriptions).Other clients include Tapulous, LivingSocial, and Gowalla. Urban Airship previously closed a $1.1 million funding round in February, so this brings their total funding to $6.5 million.CrunchBase InformationUrban AirshipInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

It&'s said that you&'re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day. Apple, it seems, is sticking with that rule. Yes, the elusive white iPhone has been delayed again. As Apple representatives havea4stold Reuters, the white version of the device is now not due until next spring. This is the third delay of the device, as it was at first pushed from launch day in June until the second half of July. Then it was pushed until &''later this year&'' in late July. Now for the next question: will it actually beat the next version of the device itself to marketLike clockwork, Apple unveils a new version of the iPhone each year at their WWDC conference in early June. It usually goes on sale shortly after that in late June/early July. Summer this year doesn&'t technically start until June 22, and there&'s a very good chance that the next version of the device, let&'s call it &''iPhone 5&8243', will at least be unveiled in the spring a4" now the stated launch of the white iPhone.Adding to the confusion is the whole Verizon iPhone storyline. It&'s generally believed now that Apple will unveil a CDMA version of the iPhone that&'s compatible with Verizon&'s network in January of next year. It would likely go on sale shortly after that. This should be a modified version of the iPhone 4. But at WWDC, Apple could unify the iPhone product line with a CDMA/GSM version of the iPhone 5. Would Apple really want two other versions (the Verizon iPhone 4 and a white iPhone 4) being released only months or weeks before thatYou&'ll note that in the Reuters story, Apple isn&'t quoted as saying a &''white iPhone 4&8243' is coming, just that a &''white iPhone&'' is. Perhaps the idea now is just to scrap the second shade until the iPhone 5That will piss off a lot of people who were waiting for the white one. But for whatever reason, Apple just hasn&'t been able to get it made. And that&'s odd considering that I played with one at the unveiling of the iPhone 4 in June (see picture above). I didn&'t notice anything wrong with it, but there have been reports that it was hard to color the enclosure in the right white pigment or that it was letting light bleed through.Who knows what is going on. All I know is that this may actually be a better option if you want a white iPhone 4 at this point. So much for that special editiona4sDisneya4za4sSnow Whitea4s iPhone 4 for the holidays!CrunchBase InformationiPhone 4AppleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Mobile app users are a fickle bunch: while theya4a4re willing to give new apps a try, 26 percent of the time the apps never get a second shot, according to a study by the analytics firm Localytics. The big takeaway from the news for mobile app developers is that first impressions of your app matter greatly, and you should also pay more attention to the number of people who keep using your apps, instead of just looking at download statistics.Localytics looked at thousands of apps across every major mobile platform using its app analytics software. The company found that one-time app usage was slowly on the rise throughout 2010 &8212' in the first quarter it was around 22 percent, but by the end of the year it grew to 28 percent. The increase is most likely due to more consumers getting smartphones throughout the year, and we can expect the number to grow even further over the next few years.Unlike installing traditional software on computers &8212' which involves locating installation files, performing the installation, and then running the program &8212' mobile apps offer a lower barrier to entry that entices users to try them and then forget them. On mobile platforms, you generally only need to locate the program you want in an app store, choose to download it, and wait while your device does all the installation work.Calling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
Research in Motion has finally unveiled the launch details for its long-awaited BlackBerry PlayBook tablet: It will hit stores on April 19 and start at $499 for the 16 gigabyte version, the same price as the iPad 2.RIM&'s pricing makes the PlayBook the first real competitor to the iPad in terms of both pricing and features. Motorola&'s Xoom Android tablet, which launched last month, is feature packed and offers 32 gigabytes of storage, but it retails for $699 to start. Motorola is planning a WiFi-only version for $599, but most consumers will still consider it more expensive than the iPad, even though it has more storage. Also like the iPad, RIM will offer a 32GB version of the PlayBook for $599, and a 64GB version for $699. All of RIM&'s current PlayBook offerings will be WiFi-only, with mobile broadband versions (likely with both 4G and 3G support) to come later in the year.Best Buy will start taking preorders for the PlayBook today. Other retailers include Staples, Office Depot and RadioShack.Calling all mobile executives: This April 25-26, VentureBeat is hosting its inaugural VentureBeat Mobile Summit, where we&'ll debate the five key business and policy challenges facing the mobile industry today. Participants will develop concrete, actionable solutions that will shape the future of the mobile industry. The invitation-only event, located at the scenic and relaxing Cavallo Point Resort in Sausalito, Calif., is limited to 180 mobile executives, investors and policymakers.
