Sony Ericsson Xperia X10(Credit:Sony Ericsson)Sony Ericsson is launching theAndroid 2.1 "Eclair" upgrade to Xperia X10 devices running on the AT&T network in the U.S., the handset maker announced today.Owners of the device, which boasts a 4-inch touch screen, a 1GHz processor, and an 8-megapixel camera, will be able to access the upgrade today. With the upgrade, the phone records video in 720p, offers multitouch support, gets facial detection in video capture, and increases the number of available home screens from three to five.In order to update the Xperia X10, users will need to download a PC Companion application to get the process started. From there, they'll need to plug their devices into their computers and start the update. According to the company's Web site, the update will take about 30 minutes to complete. The addition of Android 2.1 to the Xperia X10 comes rather late. Many other devices are already running the newer Android 2.2 (Froyo). There are even some running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). The issue of fragmentation in the Android ecosystem has been a hot-button issue ever since new updates started to emerge. Some devices get the new versions of the operating system quickly, while owners of other platforms, including the Xperia X10, are forced to wait and wait for vendors to offer updates.According to a chart on the Android developers' page, Android 2.2 currently runs on nearly 66 percent of Android-based devices on the market. Android 2.1 is running on 24.5 percent of devices. Android 2.3 is available on 4 percent. There are still even some devices running Android 1.6 and Android 1.5.On a related note, the update didn't take quite so long across the pond. In October, Sony Ericsson announced the Android 2.1 for update European customers. At the time, the company promised that North American owners would get the update by the end of November. The Xperia X10 on AT&T's network is selling for $49.99 with a two-year commitment and online discount.

0 Vote(s)

AirPlay in action with an iPad and a TV with an Apple TV unit. (Credit:Apple)Apple's AirPlay video streaming technology could be making the leap from the Apple TV set-top box to non-Apple living room hardware.A report by Bloomberg, which cites anonymous sources, says Apple is weighing a licensing program for the video component of its AirPlay technology that would let gadget makers incorporate the wireless streaming into televisions and set-top boxes.Apple introduced AirPlay late last year as the successor to its AirTunes wireless audio streaming technology. The renaming was also meant to explain to consumers that, with the incorporation of video streaming, the technology was no longer just for audio. With AirPlay, users of iOS devices like theiPhone, theiPad, and theiPod Touch can wirelessly send videos to Apple TV for watching on the big screen. Since AirPlay's launch, Apple has licensed the technology's audio portion to device makers, for what one of Bloomberg's sources said is $4 per device. What's been missing is the video component, thus requiring users to buy an Apple TV device in order to stream, leaving third-party video device makers out of the market. As far as timing on any licensing goes, Bloomberg says it could be here as early as this year. That time frame could coincide with Apple's annual music and iPod event, which usually takes place in September.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Millennial Media) Android led smartphone platforms last month with a 51 percent share of all ad impressions tracked by mobile ad network Millennial Media, according to its Mobile Mix report released today. That number was down a few percentage points from January but still surpassed the 27 percent grabbed by Apple's iOS. But Apple and iOS took the top spot in other areas.Among other major players, Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS claimed 17 percent of all impressions, leaving Nokia's Symbian with 2 percent and Microsoft's Windows Mobile with just 1 percent.Beyond its standard findings, Millennial Media has kicked off a new category for Connected Devices, which looks specifically attablets and gadgets such as theiPod Touch and certain game consoles rather than smartphones. And in this category, Apple led the pack. Thanks to the popularity of the iPad, Apple's iOS took home 80 percent of all ad impressions in the new category last month. That compared with Android, which accounted for 17 percent, due largely to the growth of Samsung's Galaxy Tab.Looking specifically at the device makers, Apple again won the top spot with 28 percent of all ad impressions. Among the 30 mobile devices tracked by Millennial Media, the iPhone took first place with a 16.5 percent share, while the iPod Touch trailed in second place. TheiPad found itself sixth on the list. Ten of the top 30 devices(Credit:Millennial Media) How did the newly-launched Verizon iPhone fare in February Tracking the phone for a total of two weeks last month, Millennial Media found that it scooped up 4.5 percent of all ad impressions among U.S. iPhones, with AT&amp'T accounting for the rest. Android device makers also did well for the month. Samsung reclaimed second place over HTC with a 23 percent share of all ad impressions, a 50 percent boost from January. In total, Samsung accounted for seven of the top 30 mobile devices, with its Galaxy Tab tablet and its Fascinate, Forte, and Captivate smartphones hitting the list for the first time. Dropping to third place, HTC captured slightly more than 11 percent of all ad impressions for the month and also saw seven of its mobile devices on the top 30 list. RIM followed closely in fourth place, with a share of around 11 percent and six of its BlackBerry phones among the top 30 devices. Among all the devices tracked by Millennial Media, smartphones captured 62 percent of all ad impressions last month, leaving 24 percent for feature phones and 14 percent for other connected devices.

0 Vote(s)

Some porn stars have tens of thousands of Twitter followers. A new article claims the industry is finally cottoning to social media.(Credit:Twitter)If you don't think that porn stars want to have any direct connection with their fans, think again. While they may not invite fans over to their houses, many adult stars seem to be very, very fond of developing relationships--digitally, at least--via Twitter. That's what a story in the Daily Beast argues. Titled "Why porn stars love Twitter," the article suggests that hundreds of adult film actresses have turned to Twitter as a way to give the impression of being accessible to fans. This, the article says, despite years of the adult industry being slow to adopt social media, in part because "porn stars have traditionally been marketed as figures of unattainable fantasy" and because "the company owners and agents who run the industry originally doubted the value in sharing with fans the mundane details and drama of real life."But now, the Daily Beast says, "after [hundreds of] individual porn stars built huge followings on Twitter, the industry has belatedly learned the value of social media: Porn stars love Twitter."An example of why the industry is cuddling up to Twitter comes in the experience of 29-year-old porn star Courtney Cummings, the story reports. Cummings (NSFW Twitter profile), who as of this writing had 52,130 Twitter followers, mostly seems to tweet links to pictures of herself in action, as well as information about how to arrange private Skype sessions. She calls her followers her "babies" and told the Daily Beast that though the mucky-mucks in the adult industry have been slow to adopt social media, "the industry is just now learning how supportive my babies are when I go somewhere, do a Web show, or make a film."Not all porn stars see the Twitter attraction though. Even some who have tens of thousands of followers apparently don't see the professional benefit. The Daily Beast quoted her as saying that despite having more than 30,000 followers, adult star Dana DeArmond has not gotten any new work because of her fervent Twitter fan base.Perhaps even more interesting, the article reports, is a growing forum among porn stars themselves on Twitter. Tweeting insults has become common, and some stars have had to quickly retract things they posted in 140 characters or less. "You put something out on Twitter," Cummz told the Daily Beast, and "now the entire industry knows."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Panasonic)GPS on a rugged camera makes perfect sense. After all, it's tough to mark down where you were when you took a picture when there are no street signs. Panasonic's latest rugged model, the Lumix TS3, gives you that GPS for geotagging your photos and video as well as built-in compass, altimeter, and barometer. The TS3 is tougher than its predecessor, the TS2, too. It is now waterproof to approximately 40 feet under water, shockproof to approximately 6.6 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. It's not crushproof, though, so you'll still have to be careful about stepping on it or running it over. Its other key specs include a 28mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with a 4.6x internal zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, and a 12-megapixel high-speed CCD sensor. The sensor is a new design and it's paired with Panasonic's Venus Engine FHD processor. This combo allows for high-speed burst shooting--full resolution at 3.7 frames per second--and full HD movie capture in AVCHD format. The high-speed shooting also gets you 3D photos. The TS3 apparently takes 20 shots with a single press of the shutter release and then picks the two best for overlaying to create a 3D MPO file that can be played back on 3D-enabled TVs, computers, and photo frames. The Lumix TS3 will be available in March in red, orange, silver, and blue versions. No pricing was announced.

0 Vote(s)

Pioneer VSX-1020-K(Credit:CNET/Sarah Tew)When people ask "Which AV receiver should I buy" the answer depends on what you're looking for. For some, the Pioneer VSX-1020-K's excellent out-of-the-boxiPod connectivity is a must-have feature, but audiophiles couldn't care less about listening to an iPod on their home stereo system' they're better off with the Denon AVR-1911. Our list of best AV receivers is still the easiest way to see how rank different models, but here we've tried to narrow down the choices based on what kind of buyer you are.Best overall value: Pioneer VSX-1020-KThe Pioneer VSX-1020-K isn't the highest-rated receiver we've tested, but it's the one we'd most frequently recommend for the average buyer. That's because it offers unparalalled value, with its street price running as low as $360 these days. That low price is even more impressive when you consider it has excellent sound quality, six HDMI inputs and the ability to connect your iPod directly to its front panel USB port--and Pioneer even includes a cable.Best overall midrange receiver: Yamaha RX-V667If you don't mind paying a little extra, the Yamaha RX-V667 is the flat-out best overall midrange receiver we tested. Great sound quality, six HDMI inputs, 7.1 analog inputs and a best-in-class graphical user interface add up to the top-rated AV receiver for 2010. It's not quite as good of a value as the Pioneer because of its $500 street price, but it may be worth paying for if you want any of its niche features.Best-sounding AV receiver: Denon AVR-1911For the audiophile, the choice is easy: buy the receiver that sounds the best. That's the Denon AVR-1911, which outclasses both the Pioneer VSX-1020-K and Yamaha RX-V667 in audio performance. Its overall rating was held back a litte by its lack of a graphical user interface and less overall connectivity, but if you can get past those shortcomings, the AVR-1911 will wow you with its sound.Best looking AV receiver: Marantz NR1601 or Harman Kardon AVR 2600Honestly, looks aren't a high priority when I'm choosing an AV receiver, but for some buyers decor matters. The Marantz NR1601 is truly unique with its slimline design, and its sleek metal front panel is attractive, too. The Harman Kardon AVR 2600 is another excellent design pick, with its handsome two-tone style giving it a more refined look than other "black box" AV receivers. Most HDMI connectivity for the money: Onkyo HT-RC260The Onkyo fared worse in our review than some of the company's previous AV receivers, but its ace in the hole is that the HT-RC260 offers six HDMI inputs and sells online for a little over $300. On the other hand, with the VSX-1020-K available for only $360, we think most buyers would be wise to spend a little more.Want more details Be sure to check out all the full reviews, plus our full AV receivers comparison chart.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)The all-black Cr-48 that Google is shipping to the first members of its Chrome OS notebook pilot project looked awfully familiar to us when it showed up at our office.Software aside, after putting it side by side with a black MacBook that Apple shipped in 2007 we had in house, it dawned on us why: the two are practically twins. Not identical, but at least fraternal. The overall look is shockingly similar to Apple's now-extinct machine: from the color to the chiclet keyboard to the hinge, size, trackpad, even to the indentation in the place where you lift the lid. Well, see for yourself. We took some photos of the two machines next to each other for you to peruse. Google's Cr-48 and a MacBook side by side (photos) Now, if you go deeper than a first glance and break out a ruler, you'll see that there are some differences between the two externally. While the hinges look practically the same size, they aren't: 6.5 inches on the MacBook to 6 inches on the Cr-48. And the screen sizes vary slightly: The Chromebook's measures 4.5 inches by 7.5 inches, and the MacBook's 5.25 inches by 8.5 inches. The trackpads, however, are equal in size--though not in function: in 2007, Apple had not yet introduced its clickable touchpad-as-button, which the Chrome notebook utilizes.Of course there are some pretty big functional differences too: Google has nixed the disk drive, Ethernet port, and all but one USB port, but does include an SD card slot. The 3-year oldMac notebook also has those pesky caps lock and function keys that Google has eliminated. But what's inside these two machines is obviously where the key difference lays: Apple has the fully-featured Mac OS X desktop operating system powering its notebook, while Google's test hardware is wrapped around its brand new Web browser-based operating system, Chrome OS.

0 Vote(s)

Intel has until 2013 to add an interface to the tablet-centric version of its Atom processor, as device makers are targeting the chip for Netbooks, the Federal Trade Commission said in a "modified settlement order" today. "The agreement reached in August is now final but there is a minor modification to it," Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said today. "That modification is related to Oak Trail, which is for a tablet computer design. Some OEMs (device makers) have decided to design it into a Netbook-type device and under the definitions of the agreement, that made it a computer," Mulloy said. The net effect is that the PCI Express interface will have to be added by 2013. "So, by the time we get to 2013 you could expect some kind of successor product that would be in compliance with the FTC consent decree," Mulloy added. The FTC settlement with Intel in August ordered Intel to, among other things, maintain that key computer interface on its chips for at least six years "in a way that will not limit the performance of graphics-processing chips." The FTC said at that time that it hoped to provide a path for Nvidia and others to offer "complementary, and potentially competitive, products" to Intel's CPUs.

0 Vote(s)

Consumer device chip giant Broadcom said today it plans to buy Gigle Networks for $75 million plus other considerations. The deal will enable Irvine, Calif.-based Broadcom to expand its presence in chips for home networking over power lines. Gigle Networks makes chips that are used in home networking adapters which plug into power sockets. They convert ethernet-based broadband data into electrical signals that can be transferred from one wall socket to another in a house. Another adapter plugged into the wall socket can then connect via ethernet to a PC or network device. The adapters are especially useful in homes with no broadband connection in the living room. The devices complement Broadcom&'s portfolio of wireless and wired networking chips for the home.Broadcom said it can use the Gigle Networks technology to design a master chip, or system-on-a-chip, that integrates power line networking with other kinds of networking in the same device. With such networks in place, someone could stream 3D video from their PC to the TV using any one of a number of networking technologies, including WiFi, MoCA (broadband over cable TV cables), and HomePlug (broadband over electrical wiring).Broadcom will pay most of the $75 million in cash, although holders of unvested employee stock options will receive Broadcom equity awards.
Two years ago, Apple executive Phil Schiller apparently signed up for Twitter and started tweeting. But he didn&'t tweet often, and few people followed him, probably assuming it was a fake account. But if Twitter&'s verification process is to be believed, the account is real. And further, Schiller has gotten a lot more active in recent weeks on the service. And he&'s active on the hot photo sharing app Instagram too! What&'s a bit odd about all of this is that Twitter had said they were suspending their account verification process while they came up with a better system. But Schiller just became verified, as 9 to 5 Mac noticed tonight. I&'ve reached out to Twitter about it, but have yet to hear back. But I also reached out to Instagram when I noticed that a few of Schiller&'s tweets this month were sending out Instagram pictures. Sure enough, it&'s him, says co-founder Kevin Systrom. Here&'s what else is odd about this: Apple has so far been reluctant to join up with the whole Twittera4sphenomenon. While plenty of employees use the service for private means, no high-profile figures at the company are a4" or at least nota4spubliclya4sor actively. Apple exec Eddie Cue also apparently has an account (which Schiller follows), but it&'s protected. Meanwhile, we know exec Scott Forstall has one too, but he has never tweeted with it (and he only follows one person, Conan O&'Brien). But Schiller, who is one of the most public figures at Apple, has a history of public outreach. You&'ll recall that he was personally handling some of the developer backlash in August of 2009.At first Schiller was using his Twitter account sporadically to root on the Boston College Eagles, acknowledge on some Apple milestones, and lament the end of Battlestar Galactica (nice). But the past month he&'s been sharing up a storm (for him), sending links to his pictures and tweeting out iTunes links with the new iTunes/Twitter integration. He has about 800 followers right now. Expect that to skyrocket. Meanwhile, this is a nice piece of publicity for the young Instagram service.
Facebook is apparently starting a push to get users to make it their default homepage. In fact, that&'s exactly what they are doing with a new &''Make Facebook Home&'' button that is beginning to appear on the top of user&'s profiles.Users logging in may be prompted by several pictures of their friends and a customized sentence reading, &''See what&'s happening with Stephanie, Kim and the rest of your friends the moment you open your browser.&'' At the end of the sentence is a large blue button that reads &''Make Facebook Home.&'' Upon clicking (which I didn&'t want to do) the user has a choice of either making the page their homepage or adding to their homepage tabs. One can&'t help but wonder if this is an attempt to compete with Google and its seeming dominance as a homepage. While Facebook users may be spending more and more time on the service, I can&'t imagine people seeing it as beneficial as Google and it&'s powerful search capabilities. We&'ve asked Facebook how widely the new feature is being rolled out and when we get a response we will let you know. The company is probably testing the service now to see the adoption rate and whether people see Facebook as a homepage.
Since 2007a4sGoogle Street View, in an effort toa4sa4Ato organize the worlda4a4s information and make it universally accessible and usefula4 has visually captured the human experience gamut from pranks, to nudity, to crimes to death. While it&'s had its share of issues, the Google Maps project is one of the greatest juxtapositions of technology and imagery our culture has produced. In homage to this, artist Jon Rafman has collected screen captures from Google Street View blogs and his own discoveries and posted them on the amazinga4sThe Nine Eyes Of Google Street View Tumblr. Rafman describes the inspiration behind thea4stwo year old project.&''The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project. With its supposedly neutral gaze, the Street View photography had a spontaneous quality unspoiled by the sensitivities or agendas of a human photographer.&''In his collection, Rafman expresses the spontaneity and range (anything from Polar Bears to prostitutes) that makes the objective Street View images so intriguing. The grittiness of the subject matter captured by Google&'s nine directional cameras is even more poignant when viewed in relation to other photos from all over the world. This technology isn&'t intended to be art, which makes it even more compelling. Some of my favorite images, above and below.\Via David Karp/HN.CrunchBase InformationGoogleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

We&'re now less than a month away from LeWeb &'10, the giant tech conference in Paris, France put on each year by Geraldine and Loic Le Meur. This year&'s agenda features a whole lot of TechCrunch as several of us will not only be on stage at various times, but there&'s also a modified version of the startup competition that will have more of a TechCrunch Disrupt flavor. So so we&'re happy to announce the 16 startups that have been selected to compete this year. These 16 companies were selected by LeWeb and August Capital. They chose these from over 400 applications submitted. Here they are:Badgeville Incwww.badgeville.comNETHERLANDSCauwill Technologieswww.cauwill.comIRELANDCity Mwww.deways.frFRANCEDesk.io GmbHwww.phonedeck.netGERMANYFiddmewww.fiddme.comISRAELGarmzwww.garmz.comAUSTRIAGreendizerwww.greendizer.comFRANCEGreenPocket GmbHwww.greenpocket.deGERMANYNujiwww.nuji.comUNITED KINGDOMPraized Media Inc.www.needium.comCANADASmallriverswww.paper.liSWITZERLANDSuper Marmitewww.super-marmite.comFRANCETagattitudewww.tagattitude.frFRANCETinypay.mewww.tinypay.me/NETHERLANDSWazewww.waze.comISRAELWork4 Labswww.work4labs.comFRANCE/USAAs you can see, only one of the companies is based in the U.S. (Work4 Labs), and even they are only half-based here. That will certainly give LeWeb&'s competition a bit different of a flavor than many other tech conferences. Or, as our own Michael Arrington puts it, &''These are all European startups! That&'s so racist. Each one of these will get its ass kicked by someone from California.&'' Yep, it&'s almost time for LeWeb again! If you&'re interested in attending, this link will get TechCrunch readers a 200 euro discount. Startups, meanwhile, will get the special price of 995 euros, while independent developers can get tickets for 500 euros.

0 Vote(s)

Enbala Power Networks, which competed today at VentureBeat&'s GreenBeat conference, says it can make electricity consumption more predictable by enlisting big energy users like water treatment plants. In the past, Enbala said, utilities and independent electricity system operators (ISOs) dealt with unpredictable demand by trying to generate more or less electricity as needed. But renewable sources like solar and wind are less reliable &8212' you can&'t just flip a switch and create more power. So instead of adjusting supply, Enbala adjusts demand.Specifically, it will actually pay organizations to add their devices to the Enbala network. There&'s a range of devices (such as cold storage units, boilers, and wood chippers) that are somewhat flexible in terms of when they operate. For example, they may need to run for four hours out of an eight-hour shift, but it doesn&'t matter which four hours. So when those devices have been added to the network, Enbala can shut them down when demand is high elsewhere or when supply falters. The company, which used to be called Sempa Power Systems, was one of the judges&' favorites in today&'s startup competition, although it was beaten out for the top spot by Redwood Systems.Next Story: EcoFactor impresses judges with smarter thermostat Previous Story: Redwood Systems wins title of most innovative company at GreenBeat 2010PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: GreenBeat, GreenBeat 2010Companies: Enbala Power Systems, Sempa Power Systems Tags: GreenBeat, GreenBeat 2010Companies: Enbala Power Systems, Sempa Power SystemsAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Social Game Universe is announcing today a new cross-promotion tool that will help indie developers drive traffic to their social games. The Toronto-based company says its &''cross-promotion bar&'' will go by the name IGAPI (short for Inter-Game Applications Programming Interface). It is basically a banner that runs across the top of a Facebook game which promotes other games. We highlighted such tools at our recent DiscoveryBeat 2010 conference.IGAPI resembles other cross-promotion bars created by the likes of Zynga, Applifier and AppStrip. But Social Game Universe says its bar not only has the generic ability to cross promote other games. Social Game Universe realized that the cross-promotion bar can be a form of play, not just an ad.So IGAPI also has a new form of cross-promotion that is personalized to the user, connects two audiences at once, and is based on making the process of discovering other games more fun and social. You can, for instance, use IGAPI to communicate with another friend while both of you are playing different Facebook games. Rather than showing a typical banner ad, IGAPI shows you &''action cards&'' that players can play on their friends in other apps. The action cards can be simple, such as &''Give film to your friend Nathon to help him grow his studio in Hollywood Tycoon.&'' Or they can be bizarre, like &''Release a horde of zomies on your friend Jen&'s horror movie set.&''Developers can thus tailor the cards to whatever will be most appealing to the particular player. Users are thus more likely to click on the cards and interact with their friends across different games.Nathon Gunn, chief executive of Social Game Universe, said the company first developed the idea for its own Hollywood games. IGAPI let players in the movie-mogul sim game Hollywood Tycoon hire actors from the fame and stardom game Avastar. Then the company decided to turn IGAPI into a tool that any third-party developer can use to increase interaction, engagement and awareness of other apps.Hussein Fazal, chief executive of social app marketing firm AdParlor, said he believes IGAPI will drive traffic, re-engagement and revenue across the social game industry. Eric Goldberg, managing director of Crossover Technologies and advisor to Social Game Universe, said IGAPI is a step forward in cross promotion of social games and a great way for indendent developers to reach new players. The company was founded by Gunn and Ted Worth' Gunn was part of the team at Bitcasters, one of Canada&'s longest-running multimedia production companies. While at Bitcasters, Gunn helped develop some of the first tools for uploading and editing video on the web. He also ran the internet strategy for the Canadian government. Werth, head of corporate development, is a serial entrepreneur who ran companies such as Digital Club Network and an early local city guide. The company raised $1.25 million in two rounds of angel funding. Its backers include Michael Cohl, former chairman of Live Nation' Ron Demo, founder of Algorithmics' Howard Gorman' Bruce Hooey, chief financial officer of the Toronto International Film Festival' Gary Slaight, former CEO of Standard Broadcasting' Clive Smith, co-founder of Nelvana Animation Studios' and Moses Znaimer, founder of Citytv. The company was founded in 2009 and has 15 employees. IGAPI is being used in several apps developed by Social Game Universe, but third-party developers have also signed up to use it. They will be disclosed later this month.Previous Story: Google takes a swing at Facebooka4a4s a4Adata dead enda4PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: IGAPI, social gamesCompanies: Social Game UniversePeople: Nathon Gunn, Ted Werth Tags: IGAPI, social gamesCompanies: Social Game UniversePeople: Nathon Gunn, Ted WerthDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat. It&'s unclear how much the size was adjusted but it looks like the change is significant enough that it drew user attention as soon as the font was tweaked.Unsurprisingly, many members took to Twitter to vent about the smaller font, complaining that the new size is difficult to read. It&'s a small adjustment but the majority of Tweets about the change seem to be negative so Facebook may not be keeping the new, smaller font for long. What do you think about the new font size Love it or hate itCrunchBase InformationFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Mikkel Svane, CEO of help desk ticketing provider Zendesk, said that his company&'s most recent round of funding worth $19 million might be his company&'s last.Zendesk is part of a batch of fresh collaboration and enterprise startups that have seen some explosive growth in recent years. Along with Huddle, Yammer and some other startups, Zendesk has seen a lot of interest with its on-demand help desk services. With that much momentum, it makes enough sense that the company is going to go as far as possible a4" which could involve going public, though that&'s a completely different beast, Svane said.&''This most recent round of funding has all the characteristics of being the last round of funding,&'' Svane said. &''We want to push this company as far as we can a4" we believe we have fantastic momentum here.&''The whole generation of enterprise startups has seen some significant rounds of funding as well.Zendesk has hired about 50 people in the past year or so, and has seen an incredible amount of growth. That&'s on top of two earlier rounds of funding, the second of which was worth $6 million. Yammer, another startup in that generation, recently announced a funding round worth a whopping $25 million. Huddle raised an extra $10.2 million in its second round of funding earlier this year in May.It&'s another indication of the newest startups bringing typical consumer-facing strategies to the enterprise. Yammer brought the lessons Facebook taught startups to the enterprise space with its business social network. Zendesk, like Yammer, brought lessons from the consumer space by letting customer help desks communicate with customers anywhere at any time, using a large number of tools like e-mail and Twitter.&''The whole notion of customers and companies is completely changing, we&'re all customers,&'' Svane said. &''All our tactics are consumerish a4" the traditional B2B is quietly dying out.Svane wouldn&'t give any indication of what kind of valuation the company had in its most recent round of funding, but said he was &''very humbled at the size of the round.&'' He said the company was a bit oversubscribed and, like other fresh startups in the area, had the luxury of being a bit picky in what investors the company chose.&''We can&'t say yes to everybody,&'' he said. &''There can be only one, and that was actually the hardest part.&''If that weren&'t any kind of indication of how much influence the consumer space has on Zendesk&'s enterprise strategies, the company has enlisted the likes of Cory Doctorow for a series of holiday videos ranging from creative commons musicals to parodies of TED talks.Previous Story: Worried about your reputation Intelius now lets you track it onlinePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: B2B, collaboration, enterpriseCompanies: Huddle, Yammer, zendesk Tags: B2B, collaboration, enterpriseCompanies: Huddle, Yammer, zendeskMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
