Every once in a while the Microsoft news world (us included) goes into a tizzy over the imminent death of Zune, the entertainment platform that initially launched around an MP3 competitor designed to take onApple's iPod, and that has since gone on to become the brand and software music experiences found inside theXbox 360 andWindows Phone 7. The reasoning behind these arguments typically centers around a combination of sales, device iteration, and software updates. The MP3 player never quite went on to offer the iPod a challenge in market share as Microsoft had seemingly intended when the product was first announced. What happened instead (and what Microsoft has been happy to point out), is that Zune has grown to be bigger than a single device. It's turned into a platform, and an idea that, much like the ill-fated PlaysForSure DRM initiative (which the Zune helped kill off), means you have a single ecosystem with multiple devices that will work in harmony as long as you stay within its walls. But murmurs around that ecosystem's identity being killed off have slowly begun to pick up again with reports that suggest Microsoft plans to nix the branding, as well as move some of the Zune components into other parts of the company. "My sources tell me that the Zune brand is on the way out and that all Zune products and services will be moved into other businesses, including Windows Live," wrote longtime Microsoft follower Paul Thurrott in a post on Monday. "Zune will essentially cease to exist under this plan," he said.A Microsoft representative denied such claims to ZDnet's Mary Jo Foley, saying:"We're not 'killing' any of the Zune services/features in any way. Microsoft remains committed to providing a great music and video experience from Zune on platforms such as Xbox Live, Windows-based PCs, Zune devices and Windows Phone 7, as well as integration with Bing and MSN." One of the items that had fueled the rumor fire was heaped on during last week's announcement by Microsoft that it was joining forces with Nokia as part of a strategic partnership that would see the two companies working together on future devices. Missing from a slide about how Microsoft and Nokia's collaboration would extend the two companies' global reach were any mentions of Zune ecosystem among the sea of the company's brands and services. One slide is not be enough to start a death countdown though, or at least it shouldn't be given consideration to the role the software and platform itself still plays within the company's current lineup of products. Take for instance Windows Phone 7, which is the latest device to be given the Zune treatment. When Microsoft eventually rolls out its first system software update for it next month it's going to need to be done through the Zune software. Mac users, on the other hand, will be able to use the Windows Phone 7 Connector software, which Microsoft made as a go-between for iTunes users. The prospect gets a bit more murky on the Xbox side of things. Zune has existed there simply as a rebrand of a service that had existed before, with a content lineup that mirrors what's available on the PC side, including the subscription music service. Microsoft wasn't afraid to change it around that first time, but risks confusing users by changing monikers yet again. As for the device itself, the Zune hardware hasn't been given a refresh since September of 2009 and is unlikely to see another, with development on the player software being honed for phones instead. In that regard, it may be the right time to give the platform a rebranding to decouple it from the connotation of a device that is no longer getting the company's attention. The real question is where the pieces will land if and when that happens.

0 Vote(s)

On a typical morning, I wake up to more than 80 new e-mails in my in-box--and that doesn't even count the many more that are automatically filtered to several sub-folders, one of which receives around 70 messages per day alone. Nor does that encompass the dozen or so messages sitting in my personal account. That's quite a lot of e-mail to sift through, especially for a person who cringes at the sight of unread messages in her in-box. But once I've marked them as read, it then becomes a chore to keep track of what needs a response and when. Incidentally, this is precisely the reason that NudgeMail caught my eye. This handy service, developed by San Francisco-based consumer product experience firm Stage Two, is about as straightforward as they come, which is an integral part of its appeal (disclosure: Jeremy Toeman, a founding partner of Stage Two, is also a columnist for CNET). NudgeMail provides one feature: it turns any e-mail client into a reminder system. So say you receive a message that necessitates a reply, but not until Friday. Simply forward the e-mail to "friday@nudgemail.com" and, on Friday, the message will be sent back to you for response. You can also schedule items for particular dates' for example, for the 22nd of November, you would forward the message to "11222010@nudgemail.com."A simple forward sent to thursday@nudgemail.com provides the above results.(Credit:Screenshot by Jasmine France/CNET)It's really as simple as that. There are no registrations, no users, no widgets to toy with--just e-mail. And as many of us know, forwarding an e-mail is about the quickest and easiest process there is. Better yet, NudgeMail works from pretty much any platform--Android, BlackBerry,iPhone, Yahoo, Outlook, Gmail...the list goes on and on. And it's completely free, at least for now. The service is currently in beta' once it goes live in prime time, the developer asserts that free users will still get a "limited but useful quantity of monthly nudges," while those who subscribe to the premium service will get unlimited nudges and extra features.

0 Vote(s)

Oh, the crazya4sPalins. If it isna4a4t crazy Sarah, it&'s crazy Todd. And if it isna4a4t crazy Todd, ita4a4s their crazy, dysfunctional kids. And so it was this week when Willow and Bristol Palin took to a teenagera4a4s Facebook wall to protest his review of their moma4a4s TV show, a4AAt Home With The Palinsa4.Of course, ita4a4s only right and proper that kids want to defend their mother even if, as is frequently the case with Palin, her words are generally indefensible (hell even Elizabeth Bthory probably got a mothersa4a4 day card). But unfortunately, the language used in the Palin kidsa4a4 rebuke to the claim that &''Sarah Palin&'s Alaska, is failing so hard right now&'' was somewhat &8211' shall we say &8211' unfortunate.&''Haha your so gay,a4 posted Willow in response to the kid (identified only as &8216'Tre&') a4AI have no idea who you are, But what I&'ve seen pictures of, your disgusting &8230' My sister had a kid and is still hot.&''For clarification, she added&8230' &''Tre stfu. Your such a faggot.a4Bristol, as the only proper-nouned one of the brood, showed slightly more mastery of grammar: a4AYou&'re running your mouth just to talk shit,&'' she insisted, before turning her fire on the crowd, telling a commenter &''You&'ll be as successful as my baby daddy, And actually I do work my ass off. I&'ve been a single mom for the last two years.&''Oh, yeah, she went there. But of course it was the a4Ahomophobic outbursta4 that really got the media excited. a4AHomophobic and profane slursa4 was how the NY Daily News described the posts, while the Boston Globe characterised Willow Palins a4a4s words as a a4Ahomophobic, hateful Facebook rant.a4a4sThe story was also picked up by CNN, MSNBC and even Fox News, the news channel on which mama Palin is a paid contributor. CNN in particular went to town on the story, wheeling out a succession of commentators to opine on the dangers of letting children use social media unsupervised, and how most teens dona4a4t understand the difference between public and private. These are all valid points, of course &8211' and Ia4a4ve written before that todaya4a4s kids apparently have no comprehension of the damage theya4a4re doing to their future selves when they post crap like this on social media. But whata4a4s truly remarkable about the Palin kids going rogue on Facebook is how unremarkable it is.For one thing, theya4a4re kids &8211' and kids using slurs like a4Agaya4 and faggota4 isna4a4t news. Thata4a4s how kids talk' they shouldna4a4t, but they do, and they will until theya4a4re about 18 and they start having openly gay friends and co-workers and grow out of it. More unremarkable though is the fact that Sarah Palina4a4s kids would feel it&'s appropriate to use social media to turn on critics, using incendiary and ill-thought-out language. After all, kids learn from example.Sarah Palin has been in public office since 1992, when Bristol was two years old and Willow was two years from being born. During that time both kids have had ample opportunity to learn how to behave in a world where your actions reflect on your family. And what lessons have they learned from their mother That name calling is wrong Uh-uh&8230'&''The lamestream media throughout our country&8230'&'' &8211' Sarah PalinOr the importance of disagreeing with dignity&8230'&''Howa4a4s that Hopey-Changey Thing Working Out for Ya&'' &8211' Sarah Palin (to Obama supporters)Avoiding inflamatory rhetoric&8230'a4AOur opponent though is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he&'s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.&'' &8211' Sarah PalinChecking your spelling on Twitter&8230'&8216'&''Refudiate,&'' &''misunderestimate,&'' &''wee-wee&'d up.&'' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!&' - Sarah Palin (on Twitter)Or how about thinking before you post something stupid on Facebook&8230'a4AThe America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama&'s &''death panel&'' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their &''level of productivity in society,&'' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.&'' &8211' Sarah Palin (on Facebook)Yeah, one long series of strong messages from Sarah Palin to Willow and Bristol. Keep ramping up the social media idiocy, kids, and one day you too might become the darling of the frothing, racist tea-partying right. You fucking betcha.

0 Vote(s)

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt gave gadget fans a rush today when he showed off an uannounced Android phone with a cool new mobile communications technology. Dubbed near-field communications, the technology lets you wave a cell phone over a reader and use your phone to pay for something.Near-field communications chips are built into Japanese cell phones. But the technology has been very slow to take off in the U.S. Part of the reason is that so many merchant locations have traditional credit card readers in place and are loathe to upgrade the 1970s technology without a clear benefit.Schmidt made the announcement in an opening talk with John Battelle and Tim O&'Reilly at the Web 2.0 Summit today in San Francisco. The fact that the upcoming Google Android phone, which will be made and sold by unnamed Google partners, has near-field communications built into it shows that the chicken-and-egg problem may be overcome soon. After all, a phone maker wouldn&'t add the unnecessary cost of the near-field communications chips if it felt there wouldn&'t be any readers around to read them.Schmidt said that the new phone would run the upcoming Gingerbread version of the Android operating system. Asked when Gingerbread would arrive, Schmidt said a few weeks. Various bloggers have wondered if the phone Schmidt held up was the long-awaited Nexus S, the foll0w-up to the Nexus One phone. Schmidt would only say that the company did not plan to do a Nexus Two phone.Next Story: CEO Eric Schmidt: There is a talent war, but Google isn&'t losing Previous Story: ZenRobotics robot recyclers go for green in the CleanTech OpenPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: near field communicationsCompanies: GooglePeople: Eric Schmidt, John Battelle, Tim OReilly Tags: near field communicationsCompanies: GooglePeople: Eric Schmidt, John Battelle, Tim OReillyDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Changes are afoot with Dell&'s mobile communications group. The company announced yesterday that the division&'s chief, Ron Garriques (pictured right with singer Bono), is leaving Dell as the company integrates the group into its &''core operations&'', Reuters reports.Garriques joined Dell in 2007 and was tasked with managing its mobile consumer business. The company adopted Google&'s Android mobile operating system and started selling its Mini 3i smartphone in China last year. In August, Dell rolled out its long-delayed Aero smartphone in the US. It also launched a 5-inch tablet, the Dell Streak, this past summer, which struck a baffling balance between being a very large phone and a small tablet.None of those devices found much success in the marketplace, but the company did show some promise when it announced its high-end Thunder and Lightning phones, which ran Android and Windows Phone 7 respectively. The Lightning was eventually renamed the Venue Pro for Windows Phone 7&'s launch.Garriques arrived at Dell after serving as the head of Motorola&'s mobile phone division. He&'ll be leaving the company by the end of January but will continue to provide consulting services throughout 2011 (for which Dell will pay him a whopping two payments of $3.15 million). The news doesn&'t mean the end of Dell&'s mobile plans.
myThings, a provider of targeted advertising services, announced today that it has raised $6 million in its most recent round of funding led by Deutsche Telecom investing arm T-Venture to expand its research and development in Europe. The company, which has offices in London, Paris, and Tel Aviv, specializes in ad &''retargeting&''. That means it provides advertisers with a learning algorithm that keeps track of which advertisements don&'t work. Users are tagged with a &''smart&'' cookie that keeps track of ads that don&'t generate some meaningful throughput. That information is then shot back to a server that distributes ads. The server then no longer displays ads that didn&'t generate any clicks.Privacy nuts can rest easy, though. myThings says the algorithms only collect non-personal information and won&'t lead to any kind of privacy snafus on the order of the Google Buzz fiasco. Though there are always privacy concerns when any type of information is collected, myThings&' method is similar to the same process that keeps users logged in to e-mail websites like GMail.myThings is pretty popular in Europe, where its clients include Price Minister a4" one of the largest e-commerce sites in Europe and a strong competitor to Amazon.com a4" and a number of other retailers. The company says it has improved advertising throughput on those sites by up to 300 percent with its use of retargeting.Retargeted advertising is becoming an increasingly popular method of generating relevant advertising for consumers. The throughput boost from using retargeted advertising is around 1,000 percent, according to data from comScore. That&'s compared to about a 500 percent boost when targeting advertising based on specific audiences a4" which would involve collecting a whole lot more private information than retargeting needs.myThings.com was, at one point, a web service that kept track of what users buy and the clutter of email that comes with it. Retailers uploaded purchase information directly to myThings, and consumers can then access information about the product through myThings&' web site. myThings CEO Benny Arbel decided the information and algorithms were better used to deliver better targeted advertising, and shifted the company&'s direction as a result.myThings had earlier raised $5 million in its second round of fundraising in 2008, and $8 million in its first institutional round in 2006. That brings the company&'s total funding up to $19 million.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: Boeing makes first solar push' 58 million smart meters to be deployed in U.S. Previous Story: Svpply bags $500K for minimalist social shoppingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: advertising, retargeting, targeted advertisingCompanies: Deutsche Telecom, MyThings, T Venture Tags: advertising, retargeting, targeted advertisingCompanies: Deutsche Telecom, MyThings, T VentureMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Five years ago, video games were in a &''golden age.&'' The Playstation 2 was dominating sales and found its way into most households, and gamers still plugged controllers into their systems to play their games. Then people began texting on their phones a4" and the world changed forever, said Nintendo of America&'s president Reggie Fils-Aime.Video game developers and console manufacturers face a completely different set of problems now that social networks like Facebook and Twitter have risen to power, Fils-Aime said at the 18th annual Digital Entertainment conference hosted by BMO Capital Markets today.&''Some observers might think that 5 years ago in the glory days of the PS2, Game BoyAdvance, that those days could never be matched,&'' Fils-Aime said. &''We&'re facing challenges today that never existed before.&''Today, social gaming and casual gaming dominate game sales. Zynga, a private social gaming company, has a valuation as high as Electronic Arts a4" one of the largest publishers in the world a4" according to some metrics. The Apple App Store and games on mobile devices like Android and the iPod Touch and iPhone have also emerged as significant players in the video game industry.Year-over-year sales have been declined slightly, according to data on game sales by NPD group. In September, game sales fell 8 percent when compared to the same month a year ago. Despite a strong showing by Halo: Reach, and now Call of Duty: Black Ops, there&'s at least a little bit to be worried about, as gamers have tightened their budgets heading into the holiday season. But Nintendo isn&'t all that worried about keeping up with sales a4" and neither should any other company, Fils-Aime said. Console manufacturers have exceeded the sales records of the last console generation that included the Xbox, Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo Gamecube. When compared to the same holiday season in the past console generation, current console sales are up 45 percent.Game sales are also up 26 percent when compared to the same holiday season in the last console generation, Fils-Aime said.&''As good as the good old days were, things could and did get much better,&'' he said. &''Systems designed exclusively for the primary purpose of playing games are doing just fine.&''A large part of that has to do with increasing prices of consoles. During the last generation, consoles sold for between $100 and $150, whereas consoles now sell for anywhere between $200 and $400.Content producers like Electronic Arts and Nintendo have also begun making games to reach a wider audience. And with the introduction of motion controls, more and more people have begun playing video games. 62 percent of all people between the ages of 6 and 74 now play video games as of October, compared to 45 percent back in November of 2007, Fils-Aime said.&''Motion control has suddenly become the rage exactly 4 years after it started arriving, including each Wii sold,&'' Fils-Aime said. &''And over time, people have changed their minds to become active players.&''To date, Nintendo has sold 65 million units of its Wii remote motion controller and 50 million add-on analog stick controllers for the Wii remote. It has also sold 12 million Wii balance boards, used for games like Wii Fit. Microsoft and Sony have jumped on board with motion controlled gaming by releasing the Kinect and Sony Move, respectively, but they have a long way to go before they reach Nintendo&'s momentum in the space.Next Story: Money for nothing: Free apps pay off for 1 out of 3 top iPhone developers Previous Story: Activision Blizzard makes $360M overnight on Call of Duty: Black Ops launchPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: games, Kinect, motion controls, Nintendo Wii, Sony MoveCompanies: Microsoft, nintendo, SonyPeople: Reggie Fils-Aime Tags: games, Kinect, motion controls, Nintendo Wii, Sony MoveCompanies: Microsoft, nintendo, SonyPeople: Reggie Fils-AimeVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
GE this week announced 12 winners in the first $55 million phase of its venture-funded $200 millionEcoimagination contest. The worldwide competition aims to hunt down the most promising cleantech startups, an area GE is actively investing in and chief executive Jeffrey Immelt has underscored in recent moves and speeches. The company teamed with Kleiner Perkins, Foundation Capital, Emerald Technology Ventures and RockPort Capital to parse over 4,000 submissions from more than 150 countries.Their picks reflect a few rising trends in cleantech:1. Solar hot waterMost people are familiar with those panels that convert sunlight to electricity. But thermal power from the sun can also be harnessed to produce hot water for homes or to produce steam for electric turbines, like Solar Millenium&'s planned500-megawatt facility in Nevada. A few startups have been getting noticed recently for their hybrid systems that produce electricity and hot water, such as PVT Solar, which makes the PVT Echo solar system that can produce hot water, electricity and heating and cooling for the home.Another one is Khosla Ventures-backed Cogenra Solar (pictured), which won a $1.5 million grant from the California Solar Initiative and recently marked an installation at Sonoma Winery that was attended by former British prime minster Tony Blair. Ecomagination winner ClimateWell also uses solar hot water to power heating and cooling systems for homes and commercial buildings like hospitals and is currently working with GE to deploy the technology.2. Greening data centers &8212' with dataAs we surmised from our GreenBeat 2010 conference earlier this month, data is the new wave in cleantech. This shows in GE&'s winners, many of which use a combination of sensors, data crunching and analytics to yield energy savings &8212' particularly in the realm of energy-sucking data centers, which GE&'s managing director of energy financial services Kevin Skillern told me accounts for three to four percent of energy consumption in the U.S.Winner JouleX monitors, analyzes and automatically adjusts energy usage of devices in a network to the tune of 30 to 60 percent in energy savings, and GE is using its technology in, yep &8212' data centers.Another winner and GE investment SynapSense uses sensors to manage and reduce energy use in data centers. And Redwood Systems, the winner of the GreenBeat 2010 innovation competition, uses sensors and networked lighting to cut energy costs in data centers.Greening data centers, is, of course, a big deal for the Internet behemoths &8212' Yahoo (pictured) and Facebook have both recently made moves to green their data centers.3. Smart windowsSmart buildings will have smart windows. The more sunlight and heat that makes it into a building, the harder a company&'s air conditioning will have to work to counteract that. GE winner Soladigm makes electrochromic glass, which automatically adjusts tint on windows &8212' a concept reminiscent of those Transitions eyeglasses. The company says its technology can reduce energy consumption for heating, ventilation and air condition systems by 25 percent.Top construction material and glass company Saint-Gobain is also betting on the appeal of smart glass. Earlier this month, the company invested $80 million in smart glass-maker Sage Electrochromics, which has won a $72 million conditional loan guarantee from the government and is planning to build a plant in Minnesota.Next Story: Android ties for lead with iPhone on mobile ad network Previous Story: Are you dummies ready for location servicesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cleantech investing, ecomagination, glass, green data centers, smart buildings, smart windows, Solar, solar heat, solar hot water, solar thermalCompanies: ClimateWell, Cogenra, Emerald Technology Ventures, Foundation Capital, GE, JouleX, Kleiner Caulfield, Pvt Solar, Redwood Systems, Rockport Capital, Sage Electrochromics, Saint-Gobain, Soladigm, Solar Millenium, SynapsensePeople: Kevin Skillern, Tony Blair Tags: cleantech investing, ecomagination, glass, green data centers, smart buildings, smart windows, Solar, solar heat, solar hot water, solar thermalCompanies: ClimateWell, Cogenra, Emerald Technology Ventures, Foundation Capital, GE, JouleX, Kleiner Caulfield, Pvt Solar, Redwood Systems, Rockport Capital, Sage Electrochromics, Saint-Gobain, Soladigm, Solar Millenium, SynapsensePeople: Kevin Skillern, Tony BlairIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
