When RIM introduced the BlackBerry PlayBook, it not only offered a 7-inch alternative to theiPad andAndroid tablets, it also offered a sneak peek into the future of RIM. Even though we think handsets like the Bold and the Torch are sleek and handsome, they're just not innovative enough. They appear to cater to loyalists rather than attempt to woo new customers. Even the latest BlackBerry Bolds from BlackBerry World seem more evolutionary than revolutionary. The PlayBook, however, with its innovative OS and features, may be RIM's first shot at what a next-generation BlackBerry phone will look like. Sure, a tablet and a phone are two different things, but we couldn't help but wish we could shrink down the PlayBook into a more smartphone-like size. That's why we're happy RIM has said it's bringing the PlayBook's QNX platform to its phones. The PlayBook may have received less than stellar reviews in the press, but we think there are still plenty of lessons RIM could learn from its flagship tablet and perhaps apply them to its future phones.Imagine a smaller version of the BlackBerry PlayBook (Credit:Josh P. Miller/CNET)QNX mobileThe PlayBook itself may have garnered mixed reviews, but the QNX OS is nevertheless impressive. The interface is stunning, with buttery smooth transitions and amazing multitasking. In fact, many industry pundits call this "true multitasking," which is not the case with iOS and Android. With the latter systems, you're just hiding or minimizing one task while running another. With QNX, you really are running several different apps at full throttle simultaneously, just like you would on a desktop PC.We think QNX will look fine on a smaller 4-inch display. You won't get quite as much real estate, but the overall experience is actually pretty similar to Palm's WebOS deck-of-cards interface. The biggest hurdle, as we see it, is the PlayBook's reliance on the outer bezel to access menus and jump between open apps. This means that if RIM were to port the OS over to a smaller handset, that device will have to have a rather large border around the display -- at least, a larger border than we're accustomed. Perhaps RIM could tweak the OS so that a thick bezel isn't necessary. The browserThe web browser on BlackBerry OS 6 is far better than any of its predecessors, but it still doesn't offer that full Web experience that many people want. The browser on the PlayBook, on the other hand, is practically indistinguishable from the one on your PC. It ships fully baked with Adobe Flash 10.2 support in the browser, so you can see all the Web's video, games, animations, and ads exactly as you would on a computer. There's also a privacy mode and the ability to selectively disable cookies. Our tablet editor, Donald Bell, did warn that the PlayBook's 7-inch size detracts a little from the browser experience, so a smaller 3 to 4-inch size display might be even worse. The touch accuracy is also not quite there when selecting links. But we have to imagine that RIM will adjust this for the mobile version, or at least we hope so. Seeing as most websites have mobile versions these days, we think the browser will do just fine on a smaller scale. The real question is whether the phone's hardware will be able to handle such a full-fledged browser. Not just more apps, but the right appsWhen it comes to consumer smartphones, it's often the apps that sell the hardware. It is in this arena that the PlayBook is sorely lacking, and we hope that RIM will find a way to get more native apps (and maybe some Android ones) on to its App World marketplace. We don't agree that the app store with thousands of apps is necessarily better than the one with just hundreds, but consumers still at least want the more popular ones, like Netflix or Angry Birds. We also think not having native email and calendar support on the PlayBook on launch date was a misstep. We know that's likely not to be a problem with the BlackBerry phones, but it's still something to keep in mind.If RIM is able to nail down the fit and finish of the OS and browser with its phones, we think they're halfway there. After that, they just need to focus on making great hardware and getting better apps in App World. How about you, readers Do you think the QNX platform will be great as a mobile OS Or is it too late for BlackBerry

0 Vote(s)

Movie rental company Redbox is trying to improve its standing in the mobile market. The company announced today that it has launched a new Android application that will allow its customers to look through available titles, find one of its kiosks around the U.S., and reserve films from the app. In addition, it updated itsiPhone app to make the software more responsive to users when they rent movies. The app also now supports box art.Redbox's iPhone app has performed well. The free application has been downloaded over 2 million times since its launch in December 2009, the company said.Redbox, which is owned by Coinstar, offers DVD and Blu-ray rentals at 26,000 kiosks around the United States. The company recently came off a difficult fourth quarter, missing revenue and profit forecasts due to the impact rental delays had on its operation."Overall, the performance of the Redbox business during the fourth quarter was not in line with our forecast," Coinstar CEO Paul Davis said in a statement at the time. "This was Redbox's first holiday season with 28-day delayed titles, and we underestimated the impact that the delay would have on demand during the fourth quarter."Redbox is currently required to wait 28 days before it can rent content from Warner Bros., Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Twentieth Century Fox. Those delays helped studios increase sales during the fourth quarter and prompted the rental firm to miss its forecasted rentals by a whopping 14 million units. In addition to service improvements in the mobile business, Redbox recently updated its Web site to aid customers in picking films they want to watch. Customers are able to reserve up to five films at a time before they head down to their local kiosk to pick them up.Redbox's iPhone app and Android app are available for free in the App Store and Android Market, respectively.

0 Vote(s)

You will be able to get gallery content, links to purchase the soundtrack, a mapping feature that locates the nearest theater, and e-mail integration that lets the user send an image from the movie to a friend, inviting them to see the movie.iAd integration is not widely available on the iPad, yet. However, iAds on the iPad are expected to be available to other companies in early 2011.Of course, it makes sense that Apple would choose to partner with Disney. In 2006, Disney bought Pixar from Steve Jobs for $7.4 billion in stock, making Apple's CEO the largest single shareholder of Disney and a member of its board of directors.

0 Vote(s)

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--After three launch delays due to technical problems and bad weather, the shuttle Discovery was grounded again Friday. Its final launch is delayed until at least November 30 because of a hydrogen leak in a vent line attached to the ship's external tank. After the scrub was declared, engineers discovered a large crack in the protective foam insulation on the tank that likely would have caused a launch delay, even if the leak had not developed. Engineers have not yet evaluated the crack to know what sort of repairs, if any, might be needed or even whether the damage can be fixed at the launch pad.But engineers are hopeful that the problems can be resolved by the end of the month for another launch attempt at 4:05:46 a.m. EST."We will come back in late November and give it another shot," Launch Director Michael Leinbach said. "I'm disappointed for the team today, for sure. But as we always say, and it's absolutely the truth, we're going to fly when we're ready, and clearly, we were not ready to fly today. So we'll come back another day and try it again."Asked if Discovery was "jinxed," given the problems that have repeatedly delayed the veteran orbiter this week, Leinbach said "it's a machine, and every now and then, machines break, and right now, our machine is broken, and we need to go fix it.""No, we're not jinxed at all," he said. "We're just dealing with one problem after another. Does it get frustrating It's frustrating, because we'd rather be launching and getting up to the space station, sure."Hydrogen gas spewing from a 7-inch vent line attached to the shuttle Discovery&39's external tank triggered another launch delay Friday. The next launch window opens November 30.(Credit:NASA)The leak developed during fueling for a planned 3:04 p.m. EDT launch. Sensors near the vent line indicated a "significant" leak with gaseous hydrogen concentrations of more than 60,000 parts per million. Leinbach said the concentration actually was higher than that, but the sensors go up only to 6 percent. Launches are not allowed to proceed with concentrations higher than 4 percent.Leaks in the vent line attachment fitting--called a ground umbilical carrier plate, or GUCP--delayed two earlier shuttle missions in 2009, but extensive corrective actions were taken, and engineers believed that the problem was resolved. The earlier leaks began when the tank was full, and the hardware in the vent line had been chilled to cryogenic conditions. The leak today developed much earlier, while the tank was being filled, and the leak rate was much higher.Engineers cycled a valve inside the quick-disconnect fitting in a bid to clear out any ice or other contamination that might have caused the leakage. But the system remained out of limits, violating both NASA's launch commit criteria and ground safety rules.Leinbach and Mike Moses, chairman of NASA's Mission Management Team, then decided to call off the countdown, delaying launch.Engineers quickly began assessing possible repairs in hopes of making another launch attempt Monday, the last day in Discovery's current launch window. But the timeline was tight, and engineers will not even get their hands on the hardware to find out what went wrong until Saturday.Complicating the picture, a launch on Monday would have required changes to the shuttle's space station resupply mission because of temperature issues related to the lab's orbit.Instead, Moses said, the management team decided to give up on Monday and to press instead toward at launch at the opening of the year's final shuttle launch window, on November 30.At about the same time, engineers inspecting Discovery's external tank spotted a 7-inch crack in the foam insulation near the top of the intertank region on the side of the tank facing the shuttle. It's not yet clear what caused the crack or what, if anything, might be needed to repair it. But given that it's on the same side of the tank as the shuttle, repairs likely will be required. Whether that work can be done at the pad, where access is difficult, remains to be seen.Discovery's crew, meanwhile--commander Steven Lindsey, pilot Eric Boe, Michael Barratt, Nicole Stott, and spacewalkers Timothy Kopra Alvin Drew--broke quarantine and flew back to the Johnson Space Center in Houston after the delay was announced.Discovery commander Steven Lindsey and Nicole Stott, along with the rest of the shuttle&39's crew, flew back to Houston today after a launch scrub.(Credit:NASA)The vent line is used to carry excess hydrogen gas away from the shuttle when the tank is filled with super-cold propellant. A valve used to route hydrogen to the vent line is closed a few minutes before launch, when the tank is pressurized for flight. In the most recent previous GUCP leak, the shuttle Endeavour was grounded June 13 and 17, 2009, when sensors near the umbilical attachment plate detected hydrogen concentrations of more than 6 percent. After the second launch scrub, engineers collected detailed measurements and concluded that the problem was caused by an alignment issue between the hydrogen vent port on the tank and the vent line interface. To ensure a tight fit, engineers replaced a rigid Teflon seal with a more flexible design, modified the umbilical plate mounting pins, and installed washer-like shims to counteract the alignment issue. The shims provided additional pressure on one side of the attachment fitting that was believed to be pulling away slightly as the hardware contracted under cryogenic conditions. The fix worked, Endeavour was safely launched in July 2009, and no other GUCP problems occurred before Discovery's fueling Friday.Discovery's launch originally was scheduled for Monday, but the flight was delayed to Tuesday and then Wednesday by work to replace suspect quick-disconnect fittings in the pressurization system of Discovery's right-side orbital maneuvering system rocket pod. Then, during checkout of the avionics used to control Discovery's three main engines, an electrical glitch was encountered that prompted a 24-hour delay to Thursday. After a detailed engineering review, NASA managers decided that the unexpected electrical "signature" was not a threat, and Discovery was cleared for launch. But the weather refused to cooperate, and NASA's Mission Management Team decided early yesterday to order another 24-hour delay. The next launch window opens November 30 and closes December 5 or 6. If Discovery isn't off the ground by then, the flight likely will slip to the end of February, pushing launch of the shuttle Endeavour into late April or early May. NASA's final shuttle flight, a station resupply mission with Atlantis, is targeted for next summer.

0 Vote(s)

Loopt, an early leader inlocation-based services, today announced it has launched the next version of its application with several new features, including automatic check-ins, text messages, social recommendations, and rewards from businesses. If you use any location apps, you may have experienced something called &''check-in fatigue&'' a4" which just means you get tired of having to take out your phone and check in at every place you visit. The automatic check-in feature will now allow Loopt users to create small groups of friends or family who will have constant access to your location, without the need to work your way through an app&'s interface. The ping feature, which allows users to request another user&'s location through the application, now allows the request to be sent via text message.Loopt is also looking to use the large amount of user data it receives to more efficiently recommend locations and activities to users. For example, the app could tell you of a nearby cafe that is frequently visited by friends and might be a location you&'d like to visit. Itsrecent integration with Facebook provides an additional amount of user information that may help with these types of recommendations based on the user&'s network and activities.Loopt previously launched Loopt Star, a separate application for its business-rewards program. Users were able to launch the application and see local businesses offering specials in their area, which they could redeem for checking in to the specific location.Loopt chief executive and founder Sam Altman told me that the app was originally launched to test users&' response to the program, and because of its success has rolled it up into the main Loopt app. Loopt Star will no longer be available as a standalone app. With today&'s updates, Loopt appears to be making a hard push to make the main Loopt application more robust and competitive with popular check-in apps Foursquare and Gowalla, who are already providing similar features. Gowalla just releases its own new version that most notably lets users integrate with Facebook Places and Foursquare. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company, founded in 2006,currently has four location-based applications with more than 4 million users. Loopt has secured $17 million in funding and has around 40 employees.Previous Story: Google launches ebook store with world&'s largest library of titlesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: check-in, check-in apps, location, location based services, location-based, mobile apps, placesCompanies: Foursquare, Gowalla, looptPeople: Sam Altman Tags: check-in, check-in apps, location, location based services, location-based, mobile apps, placesCompanies: Foursquare, Gowalla, looptPeople: Sam AltmanCody Barbierri is a social and digital media consultant.
There will be no shortage of computer security threats for 2011. Among the most prominent will be new threats to geolocation services, mobile devices, and Apple machines, according to researchers at Intel&'s McAfee security division.Researchers also foresee attackers targeting URL-shortening services, Internet TV platforms, and an increase in politically motivated hacking. In short, wherever the internet goes, so go the malware attacks. The predictions are contained in the 2011 Threat Predictions report by McAfee Labs. In 2011, the platforms with the biggest buzz &8212' Googlea4a4s Android, Applea4a4s iPhone, Foursquare, Google TV and the Mac OS X platform &8212' are all expected to become prime targets for cybercriminals. McAfee Labs also predicts that politically motivated attacks will be on the rise, as more groups are expected to repeat the WikiLeaks disclosure pattern.&''Wea4a4ve seen significant advancements in device and social network adoption, placing a bulls-eye on the platforms and services users are embracing the most,&'' said Vincent Weafer, senior vice president of McAfee Labs. &''These platforms and services have become very popular in a short amount of time, and wea4a4re already seeing a significant increase in vulnerabilities, attacks and data loss.&''Here&'s some snapshots from the report:Exploiting Social Media: URL-shortening services will be a prime target of malware since users tend to trust the short URLs from services such as Bit.ly because they are shared by the users&' friends. More thn 3,000 such short-URL links are being created a minute now, creating opportunity for lots of scams.Exploiting Social Media: Geolocation servicesLocation services such as Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places can easily search, track and plot the whereabouts of friends and strangers. In just a few clicks, cybercriminals get a wealth of personal information on individuals, which in turn lets them craft a targeted attack. As mobile usage rises, so will attacksThreats on mobile devices are on the rise, especially among workers. As hacker attacks against mobile phones grow, more corporate data will be at risk. McAfee predicts a rapid escalation in this area.Apple: No longer flying under the radarHistorically, the Mac operating system has been too small for hackers to target. The cybercriminals always got a bigger payoff from attacking Windows users. But Mac-targeted malware will increase as Apple&'s platforms take off in both the mobile and computer markets.Applications: Privacy leaksa4"from your TVNew internet TV platforms are some of the most anticipate devices of 2011. But in the rush to market, McAfee warsn that the platforms aren&'t yet fully protected. Apps that run on the TV could expose users to privacy or identity data losses.Attacks will come from your friendsAs social networks gain currency, attackers will try to pose as your friends to make you a victim of malware. Hackers are coming up with more ways to disguise their attacks as personal or legitimate communications.Hacktivism: Following the WikiLeaks pathPolitically motivated attacks will proliferate and new sophisticated attacks will appear in 2011 as more groups try to repeat the WikiLeaks example. This so-called &''hacktivism&'' will be carried out by people claiming to be independent of any particular government or movement, and will become more organized and strategic by incorporating social networks in the process, McAfee reports.[image credit: ZDNet]Previous Story: Crafty marketplace Etsy could make $50M this yearPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: hacktivism, malware, predictions, securityCompanies: McAfeePeople: Vincent Weafer Tags: hacktivism, malware, predictions, securityCompanies: McAfeePeople: Vincent WeaferDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
One of the running jokes about the iPhone is that ita4a4s amazing, unless you actually want to use it as a phone. I guess it doesna4a4t make a reliable alarm clock either.iPhone owners already encountered an alarm problem back in November, when the switch to Daylight Savings Time caused some repeating iPhone alarms to go off an hour late. Apparently, the New Yeara4a4s switch has caused problems as well &8212' and they were even worse, since the alarms didna4a4t go off at all (rather than just being delayed), and they affected iPhone owners who set their alarms manually (not just the ones who relied on an automatically repeating schedule).I havena4a4t seen any concrete numbers on how many iPhones (and other Apple devices) were affected, but Reuters has a rundown of many of the complaints found on Twitter. An Apple spokesperson told Reuters on Sunday that after problems over the weekend, the alarm would be fixed today. Yet some iPhone owners said their alarms failed again this morning. You can add me to the list of people affected. My alarm didna4a4t go off yesterday, but luckily there was no pressing reason for me to wake up. This morning it worked just fine &8212' until I hit the snooze button and overslept anyway. While the iPhone alarm problems are getting plenty of coverage, they probably aren&'t as embarrassing as a4AAntennagate,a4 where Apple decided to offer free iPhone cases to offset reception problems with the iPhone 4. Yet the phones sold like crazy, and Apple couldna4a4t manufacture them quickly enough.[image via Flickr/Alan Cleaver]Next Story: Gmail creator Paul Buchheit breaks down his angel investing numbers Previous Story: Online game service OnLive hires a chief operating officer from PandoraPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPhone, iPhone 4Companies: Apple Tags: iPhone, iPhone 4Companies: AppleAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
PapayaMobile is launching a set of tools today that will make it easier for developers to make Android games. The Beijing-based company already makes a social game platform that developers can use to make their Android titles more social with features such as friend lists, leaderboards and multiplayer challenges. Now it is releasing the Papaya Game Engine for Android, a tool that lets developers create games with cool 3D graphics, said Si Shen, chief executive of PapayaMobile, in an interview. In doing so, the company is becoming a one-stop shopping solution for Android game developers.PapayaMobile has created its own first 3D game with the engine, PapayaFish 3D, which serves as an example of what the engine can do. The company will also create 3D versions of its other games, which the company says have 4 million users, using the same engine. Shen says the engine eliminates the need for developers to learn the complexities of the Android applications programming interface or figure out the differences across various versions of Android. She also says the games are written in the C programming language and run significantly faster than games based on Java programming engines. The company&'s game platform also allows for the regular release and update of apps so that gamers don&'t actually have to go through the trouble of downloading revised apps. PapayaMobile also recently announced its monetization platform so developers can use virtual currency and virtual goods to earn new revenue. And it also announced a location-based gaming platform.PapayaMobile started as an app maker and now competes with such rivals as Aurora Feint and Scoreloop.Shen recently announced PapayaMobilea4a4s Android App of the Day, which promotes quality Android games to the companya4a4s audience of Android users.Shen, a former mobile product manager for Google in China, started PapayaMobile in 2008 with Wenjie Qian. The company has 30 employees and raised $4 million in funding from DCM. More than 100 apps use PapayaMobile&'s technology, Shen said. Rivals include Scoreloop, Ngmoco and Aurora Feint.
It might look like Apple will crush competing iPhone and iPad advertising companies with its iAd program, but startups arena4a4t giving up. Toronto company mDialog is trying to stand out by offering greater interactivity, which might make ads genuinely useful. Today ita4a4s unveiling its latest improvement &8212' support for what the company calls a4Ain-stream appsa4.You could be watching a 30-second video advertising a car, then tap a button to find the nearest dealership. All the activity happens within the ad, so the video pauses while you look for a dealership, then it resumes once youa4a4re done. (You might not care about continuing the ad itself, but you were probably watching another video when the ad popped up, so this integration reduces overall disruption.)mDialog already announced a4Ainteractive overlaysa4 for its ads, but a company spokesman told me that todaya4a4s announcement goes further, with a4Ainteractive apps within the overlays themselves.a4That description made my head hurt, but the idea is that mDialog is providing even more interactive features to advertisers. For example, during mDialoga4a4s demonstration in April, it allowed users to tap a button and enter their email address as a way to sign up for a car test drive. With the new in-stream apps, mDialog can actually access your iPada4a4s GPS capabilities to identify where you are, then open a Google Map showing all the nearest car dealerships. The company has raised $3.15M from angel investors. You can see a sample ad, as well as mDialoga4a4s tools for creating the ad, in the video below.Next Story: EA&'s loss narrows, but it still needs bigger hits Previous Story: Casual-game maker OMGPOP pulls in funding' proves social games are still hotPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: interactive adsCompanies: mDialog Tags: interactive adsCompanies: mDialogAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
