Bing&39's iPhone app can now track down other iPhone apps.(Credit:Lance Whitney/CNET)Bing'siPhone app now shows links to other iPhone apps as part of search results, enabling users to run or download those apps directly on their phone.Described in a blog posted yesterday, Microsoft's goal behind the new feature is to make it easier for users to find iPhone apps directly through the mobile search engine. Though you can of course search Apple's App Store, scouring through the variety of apps that appear to find the right one can sometimes be a challenge.Further, by using Bing to track down iPhone apps, Microsoft hopes that people running their usual searches will stumble upon apps that they never knew existed but will find useful. The new feature works in a couple of different ways.Using a new auto app discovery mode, Bing can find apps in the course of regular search queries. For example, searching for a general topic, such as "hotels" or "movies" will uncover iPhone apps devoted to those subjects. In a search for hotels, Bing might point you to Travelocity's mobile app, while a search for movies would uncover the iPhone apps for Hulu, IMDb, and Moviefone, among others. You can also run searches to track down specific iPhone apps. For example, searching for the name of an app, such as Angry Birds or Kindle will find those dedicated apps. Also, you can enter more general searches, such as "top iPhone apps" or "ebook apps" to find a list of apps that match those categories.Links to the apps show up under a dedicated category called App Results amid your regular search results. The new feature also goes much further than just displaying the name of an app.If you don't yet have the app and want it, Bing will take you to the App Store on your iPhone where you can download the app directly. If the app is already installed on your iPhone, then tapping on it will let you launch the app right from your search results. But for that option work, the app's developer must have enabled the launch functionality, according to Microsoft, a capability that so far is only in around 50 different apps. The new mobile app search works only on Bing's iPhone version. The dedicated Bing for iPad app doesn't support the feature, though you can use the iPhone version on aniPad as well as aniPod Touch. The feature also works on Bing's mobile site.

0 Vote(s)

Those looking to get their hands on the Verizon iPhone in stores tomorrow will have another place to go.Big-box retailer Wal-Mart announced today that it will be carrying the Verizon iPhone in approximately 600 of its stores starting tomorrow. Wal-Mart will be selling the 16GB model for $199 and the 32GB offering for $299 with a two-year contract--the same price offered through Verizon and Apple.By bringing the Verizon iPhone to its stores, Wal-Mart will round out a selection of smartphones it currently sells, including the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the HTC Evo 4G, among many others. Wal-Mart also sells the iPhone 4 running on AT&T's network in some of its stores around the U.S.The Verizon iPhone was unveiled last month at a special event. Verizon allowed existing customers to preorder the device last week, but suspended preorders after supplies were exhausted. The carrier said in a statement following that decision that the company sold enough iPhone units in two hours to best sales on any other device's launch day.Customers who pre-ordered the iPhone before the cut-off started receiving the smartphone earlier this week, ahead of its official February 10 release date.Wal-Mart won't be the only third-party retailer selling the Verizon iPhone. Best Buy announced last week that it would be carrying the device in its stores, as well.

0 Vote(s)

But considering Google TV still doesn't have an applications marketplace available to consumers, Sling's option seems like the next best thing for its users.Sling Media did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

This could be the Motorola Cliq 2(Credit:Cell Phone Signal)Next week at CES T-Mobile and Motorola may unveil the successor to their 2009 handset, the Cliq.A handful of images of the Cliq 2 made their way onto Cell Phone Signal's site yesterday. The photos show a device that looks nearly identical to its predecessor outside of a redesigned keyboard and a shinier bezel around the screen. As you can see from the pictures, the phone will run Motorola's custom MotoBlur user interface, although the version of Android isn't certain. I would certainly hope for at least 2.2 Froyo, but wouldn't be surprised if it were to end up 2.1 Eclair. Feature details for Cliq 2 remain pretty sketchy at this point. The pictures show a 5-megapixel camera on the back, while rumors peg the phone as supporting Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Assisted-GPS, and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n). Although the previous original Cliq was the first on the market with MotoBlur, it was a mid-range phone at best so expect more of the same from this model.T-Mobile has been working hard to promote its burgeoning HSPA+ network, so one might assume the Cliq 2 to support this 4G technology. Indeed, Wi-Fi calling is one feature that would help differentiate the handset from its carrier siblings. T-Mobile indicated back in the fall that some of its upcoming smart phones will feature the ability to make calls and send texts over Wi-Fi using the Kineto application.Recent rumors have tapped the Cliq 2 with a January 19 launch date, so it would make sense to see T-Mobile and Moto showcase the phone at CES. Be sure to check back with CNET next week as we'll be on the ground, covering the announcements as they happen.

0 Vote(s)

Active Power is offering an updated version of its flywheel generator specifically designed for backing up microprocessor-based equipment, the company announced today. Its CleanSource UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system is available in 480-volt (300 kVA and 600 kVA) and 400-volt (250 kVA and 500 kVA) configurations."Designed based on customer feedback, the G-Series is an enhancement to our current generation of UPS technology and is a cost and feature optimized solution for the 300 to 600 kVA power range," Active Power CTO Uwe Schrader-Hausmann said in a statement.Active Power&39's CleanSource UPS uses flywheels to provide kinetic energy that can be converted to immediately usable electricity in the event of a brownout or blackout.(Credit:Active Power)A flywheel generator uses electricity from the electric grid to rotate its flywheel and remain spinning. When electricity is lost, the actively spinning flywheel's stored kinetic energy is then used to power its motor and produce electricity. The result is a generator that can supply an immediate burst of electricity until either the original electricity source comes back, or the switch to an alternate long-term power source can be made. The CleanSource UPS, which the company claims is 98 percent efficient, is intended for use in conjunction with large backup generators, and can be used to protect places like data centers from surges or brownouts, as well as used as a temporary energy source in the event of a blackout. It can be integrated to avoid any disruption in service, something obviously critical to microprocessor-based centers.Active Power went public as a company in 2000, when, in the face of rolling blackouts plaguing many communities that year, it began offering flywheel systems that store kinetic energy as an uninterruptible power source. The U.S. government is also interested in kinetic energy, not as a way to back up in the face of electrical failure, but as a way to store energy from the electrical grid.Beacon Power received $43 million in the form of a loan guarantee from the Department of Energy to construct a 200-flywheel storage plant that could potentially buffer 20 megawatts of power for the electric grid in New York. When complete the plant will be a 20-megawatt storage facility.

0 Vote(s)

Trendnet&39's first 500Mbps powerline adapter kit. More of these are expected to be debuted at CES 2011.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)It's predicted that 2011 is the tipping year of networking, where more electronic devices have built-in networking capabilities than computers.&nbsp'And this isn't a surprise' over the past few years, more and more home entertainment devices, such as flat-screen TVs, media playback devices, game consoles, and so on, include a Ethernet ports. Others use USB Wi-Fi dongles to connect to a wireless network, and many even come with a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. As more and more devices in your home scramble to find ways to connect to one another and to the Internet, the wireless network might be able to handle all of them, especially those at the far end or in the basement of the house. This is where powerline networking, which turns your home's electrical wiring into data cable, comes into play.&nbsp'And, of course, before data can be moved back and forth between different devices, it first needs to reside somewhere. This is when you need to start thinking about network storage.&nbsp'With that said, these are my educated guesses on what consumers can expect to see at CES 2011 in the realm of home networking and storage.&nbsp'All-in-one routersBy now, most, if not all, home users are familiar with the wireless router that handles two types of networking: wired (also known as Ethernet, which connects devices using network cables) and wireless, which allows computers and other Wi-Fi-ready devices to connect to the network and one another without being physically connected to a router or a hub.&nbsp' Now if you want to use a powerline connection to extend the network to the far end of the house, you will need at least two adapters, one at the router and one at the far end. This brings up the question: why not make the router itself also work as the first adapter After all, it needs to be connected to the wall socket anyway.Expect to find answers to this at the upcoming CES. The idea of an all-in-one router, which can handle Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and powerline, was first introduced by Atheros back in October. By early next year, you'll likely be able to purchase one of them from different networking vendors.Routers with built-in network storage functions, namely having internal storage--such as the LaCie Wireless Space or the Apple Time Capsule--and those with built-in USB ports to support external hard drives, will also be more popular and, most importantly, support faster storage throughput speeds. This would spare those with casual needs of network data-sharing and media streaming from having a dedicated NAS server. Chances are you'll also find those that support Ethernet, Wi-Fi, powerline, and have built-in fast network storage capabilities.QNAP&39's NMP1000, the first NAS server that&39's also a media player/streamer.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)Network media player that also work as a NAS server Network media players, such as theWD TV Live, WD TV Live Plus, Seagate Theater Plus, and the Segate Golex TV have been getting more and more popular in the pat two years. These are players that can play back digital content from external hard drives, network storage devices, or even stream them from the Internet. In other words, they are network media streamers. And for the most part, they work very well. All of these players, however, share one common shortcoming, which is the fact that they don't work as streaming servers: you can't play content stored on these player from another player, such as a computer. The idea of a media player that is also a streaming server was actually introduced back during CES 2010 with&nbsp'QNAP's MP1000, the first NAS server that's also a media player. Unfortunately, the device for some reason didn't catch on in the U.S. Consumers had to wait till the end of the year for Western Digital to introduce a similar product, the&nbsp'WD TV Live Hub, which is one of the first media player/NAS servers of its type in the U.S.&nbsp'Expect more of these devices to be introduced at CES 2011.Powerline adapters that have multiple purposesUp to now, most powerline adapters have offered just one function: extending the wired network via the home's electrical wiring. They also have cap speeds of 200Mbps (which translates into much slower real-world speeds).&nbsp'Examples of these are the&nbsp'Plaster Networks PLN3, the&nbsp'Linksys PLK300, and the&nbsp'WD Livewire. With these adapters, you'll have to resort to a hub or an access point at the far corner if you want to add more devices, especially wireless devices, to the network. However, powerline adapters can do more than that. The recently introduced&nbsp'Trendnet TPL-401E2K&nbsp'powerline kit, for example, is the first that can offer speeds up to 500Mbps by supporting the latest in powerline technology. The&nbsp'Powerline Av 200 Wireless-N Extender Kit&nbsp'from Netgear, on the other hand, has the second adapter (used at the far end of the powerline connection) that can also work as a wireless extender.&nbsp'At CES 2011, there will likely be more powerline products like these that combine both additional functionality and faster speeds.Faster wireless speedsMost Wireless-N routers and adapters on the market offer cap speeds of 300Mbps. This is because most of them use the dual-stream standard. The N specs, however, can handle more than just dual stream. The recently available Trendnet TEW-691GR , for example, is the first router on the market that can handle the three-stream standard' it offers cap speeds of 450Mbps. To take advantage of this faster speed, the clients (the wireless adapters) also need to support the three-stream standard. And they will likely become more popular starting with CES 2011. Multiple-stream N devices might also be introduced.A demo of how you can play 3D games from a smartphone on a big-screen TV, wirelessly and with no lag, thanks to WHDI.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)WiDi and WHDI to be widely adoptedIf you want to quickly display your laptop's screen on a big TV, currently there are two popular ways: either by using WiDi-based accessories, such as the Netgear Push2TV,&nbsp' or using WHDI-based accessories, such as the&nbsp'WiCast from Asus.&nbsp'These accessories work with the TV's HDMI port and allow you to stream a computer's display onto a big-screen TV, wirelessly. In a demonstration, WHDI seems to be a lot better, as it has almost no lag, allowing for smooth video playback and even online gaming.&nbsp' However, both of these standards work well and share the fact that you need to use extra devices at both ends: the computer and the TVs. Starting with CES 2011, more and more laptop as well as home entertainment devices, especially flat-screen TVs, will have WiDi and/or WHDI functionality integrated. This means you can create HDMI-like connection between them without having to use an HDMI cable. This is actually very exciting' in the future, if one of these technologies is embedded on a smartphone or a portable game console, you can quickly display the little device's screen on a big TV just by standing within 30 feet from it. Imagine playingiPhone games using the big screen as the display and the phone as the controller, completely wirelessly and without lag.* * *I hope these have made at least some of you excited. Other than these, it's also predicted that USB 3.0 will soon take the place of USB 2.0 on both laptop and desktop computers. Storage vendors will introduce more and more USB external hard drives that are based on solid-state drives, that can full take advantage of USB 3.0 speeds. Personally, I hope that Intel will demo the next generation of peripheral connectivity, called Light Peak, which is estimated to be rolled out in 2012.Speaking of excitement and demonstrations, you can also be certain that IoSafe will make an another crazy demo out of its upcoming and mysterious new device. How about you What, in terms of networking and storage, are you expecting/hoping to see at the show

0 Vote(s)

Dell is expected to roll out its hybrid tablet-laptop next week, as the PC maker takes aim atApple's iPad with a novel twist on the tablet concept. Dell Inspiron Duo converts from a Windows 7 tablet to a Netbook.(Credit:Dell)Dell is expected to officially announce the 10-inch Inspiron Duo early next week, possibly on November 23, said industry sources familiar with the launch plans. It will be available for order on Dell's Web site at that time. Dell did not respond to requests for comment. The tablet's most unique feature is the ability to open up the case, flip the screen, and convert it into a clamshell Netbook. And a high-end Netbook, at that. TheWindows 7-based Duo packs a dual-core Atom processor. Hybrid designs such as Hewlett-Packard's EliteBook 2740p have been available for years but are typically pricey, heavier stylus-based products, designed first and foremost as a laptop. Dell has already staked out turf to compete with the iPad. A Dell executive couldn't resist making a wry, elliptical comment about the Apple iPad when the Duo was introduced at an Intel developer conference in September. "There are times that you have to do work. Tablets are great for entertainment, but they aren't exactly conducive to productivity," said Dave Zavelson, a marketing executive at Dell at that time. That's when he revealed the hidden keyboard. Pre-sale order information is expected to be disclosed later this week in conjunction with a Microsoft store opening in Bellevue, Wash.

0 Vote(s)

This post is brought to you by IBM. As always, VentureBeat is adamant about maintaining editorial objectivity. IBM had no involvement in the content of this or other posts. For more information on how IBM can help create a Smarter Planet, go here. We&'ve written before about how software that makes buildings more energy-efficient will become an appealing sector in smart buildings. Well, smart buildings will need smart lighting. And so 2011 will be a year in which lighting systems &8212' especially ones using light-emitting diodes, or LEDs &8212' will be on the rise.Networked lighting&'s pitch is energy efficiency, a green strategy that promises return on investment, which is a must when selling to commercial entities. (That&'s why, for example, electric vehicles been rolled out sooner and caught on faster among business buyers than consumers.) The basic premise of these lighting systems is that buildings and warehouses can save money by programming lights to automatically dim or shut off based on when the building is in use, as well as other factors, like the amount of sunlight streaming through windows. Some lighting controls focus on more efficient use of standard fluorescent lights, but solid-state lighting like LEDs could save the U.S. $120 billion between now and 2030 if the technology advances to meet certain price and performance milestones, a February report from the Department of Energy concluded.Lighting systems companies have been quick to point out the benefits of installing smart lighting. Digital Lumens claims that investing $100,000 into an LED project yields $50,000 a year in electricity and maintenance savings' Lumenergi also says it can produce a 50 percent savings on electricity bills. GreenBeat 2010 Innovation Competition winner Redwood Systems told us that its use of sensors not only reduces lighting costs but offers valuable insight on other inefficiencies in building energy management.Josh Slobin, marketing director for Daintree Systems, a new entrant into the lighting-controls market, estimates that lighting makes up 40 percent of all building energy use. It has been gearing up wireless sensor-based lighting systems, a market that they decided to get into after recognizing there was &''pretty huge chunk&'' of energy being used the building lightings market. And Michael D&'Amour, CEO of Lumenergi, another lighting-controls player, estimates that lighting accounts for more than 20 percent of all electricity consumed in the U.S. His company says customers for its systems can shave 50 percent off their lighting bills.Another plus: Lighting systems can be integrated into the smart grid. D&'Amour says Lumenergi&'s systems can be designed to dim when the cost of electricity is higher and to shut of decorative lighting when the grid is overloaded.Adura Technologies also uses wireless light switches connected with ZigBee. It uses algorithms to determine how much lighting is needed for environments like parking garages or offices to be comfortably and safely lit' all extraneous lights are cut off. Although there are a number of lighting companies in the field, success boils down to the bottom dollar.&''The key in the end is payback,&'' says Nat Goldhaber of Claremont Creek Ventures, which backs Adura. &''How long does it take to get payback If payback is over 10 years, you don&'t get the deal.&''Still, the less-efficient Edison bulb and fluorescent lights reign in the lighting market, which is why executives like Lumenergi&'s D&'Amour say lighting controls are more important than LEDs when it comes to energy savings at the moment. But LEDs are set to grow 30 percent next year and earn $1 billion in annual revenue by 2014, according to a recent report by Groom Energy and Greentech Media Research. And lighting system companies like Lunera and Digital Lumens have banked on the LED model, designing their systems using LEDs.Like lighting controls, LEDs cost more upfront but can save more money in the long run. In the case of LEDs, they last longer and are more energy efficient. The sector was marked by the NASDAQ debut this month of SemiLED, an Asian LED maker. U.S. LED manufacturers like startup Bridgelux are also aiming for a piece of the pie' others players include Cree, Phillips and Lemnis.[Image via Flickr/roomiccube]Next Story: From Kinect to Angry Birds &8212' the biggest video game stories of 2010 Previous Story: Want VC cash Learn to hone your pitchPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: LED, LEDs, lighting controls, lighting systems, smart lightingCompanies: Adura, BridgeLux, Cree, Daintree Networks, Digital Lumens, Lemnis, Lumenergi, Lunera, Phillips, SemiLEDPeople: Josh Slobin, Michael D&'Amour, Nat Goldhaber Tags: LED, LEDs, lighting controls, lighting systems, smart lightingCompanies: Adura, BridgeLux, Cree, Daintree Networks, Digital Lumens, Lemnis, Lumenergi, Lunera, Phillips, SemiLEDPeople: Josh Slobin, Michael D&'Amour, Nat GoldhaberIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
Here&'s some of the latest action we&'re following on the GreenBeat today:BYD reportedly cancels electric car &8211' The Warren Buffet-backed Chinese automaker saw lukewarm sales of its plug-in hybrid, Autoblog Green reports, selling just over 100 F3DMs (pictured) in the first year of production &8212' well shy of the its goal of 10,000. Lack of charging infrastructure fueled the weak sales, Gasgoo writes, leading BYD to cancel plans for the all-electric F3e sedan.U.S. could gain $342 billion in clean energy investment by 2020&8211' A new report by Pew Charitable Trust estimates the global clean energy investments to be worth $2.3 trillion by 2020 if G-20 members adopt aggressive clean energy policies. Under such conditions, the investment in the U.S. alone would more than double. In the absence of those policies, only $1.7 trillion would be invested worldwide.Ethanol subsidies could get reprieve &8212' An extension of tax credits for domestic-made ethanol is in the works as part of tax cut legislation being hammered out in Congress, Reuters reports. The credits are set to expire at the end of this year, and ethanol producers have been bracing for cuts.China&'s solar dominance could be U.S. opportunity &8212' Though China is currently outpacing most in the renewables and solar race, there are still opportunities for the U.S. to win off Chinese solar activity, Forbes writes. The article points out that Chinese panel producer Suntech recently began manufacturing in Arizona. And another company, Innovalight, has done well by marketing its solar panel efficiency ink to Chinese panel manufacturers.LS9 names a new CEO &8212' Renewable fuels and chemicals startup LS9 named Ed Dineen as its new chief executive. Dineen was previously COO at LyondellBasell Industries, a top petrochemical company.Digital Lumens nabs A123 executive &8212' The LED company has hired new CFO Mike Rubino, previously the CFO at battery startup A123 Systems, which IPO&'d this year. The low-energy LED lighting and networked lighting business is posed to be worth a $1 billion market by 2014, according to a recent report by GTM Research and Groom Energy.[Image via Autoblog Green]Previous Story: Android hits 300,000 daily activation milestonePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: biofuels, biotechnology, China, clean energy investment, clean energy policy, electric cars, ethanol, LEDs, SolarCompanies: Digital Lumens, Innovalight, Ls9, Suntech BYDPeople: Warren Buffet Tags: biofuels, biotechnology, China, clean energy investment, clean energy policy, electric cars, ethanol, LEDs, SolarCompanies: Digital Lumens, Innovalight, Ls9, Suntech BYDPeople: Warren BuffetIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
ApSynth is one of 53 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Spring 2011 event taking place this week in Palm Desert, Calif. After our selection, the companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.Mobile apps are a hot topic at the moment, but ApSynth believes there&'s still plenty of opportunity available in Web apps meant for desktop Web browsers.Today, the company is launching a Web-app editor that lets anyone create their own apps, and it also offers multiple ways for users to distribute and monetize their apps. Users can submit their apps to the ApSynth Marketplace to make money from their creation, or they can just offer up the apps for free. The apps can be embedded on websites, social networks and even be used as standalone desktop applications.Founders Guillaume Gruet and Jeff Gruet created the company as a response to the popularity of mobile and social media apps. They wanted to create an easy way for users to bring apps to the wider web, instead of being stuck in closed mobile or social media environments. The former Gruet worked in sales for a software publisher and marketing for Vivendi Universal, while the latter came from Airbus as an IT project manager.ApSynth faces steep from the likes of Conduit, a company that has found great success with its massive web app platform, and Heroku. There&'s definitely room for competition in the web app arena though, and by focusing on easy app development, ApSynth may be able to carve out a place for itself. The Paris, France-based company was founded in 2008 and is self-funded to the tune of 100,000 euros.Next Story: DEMO: EyePredict uses neuroscience to improve product catalogs Previous Story: Watch DEMO Spring 2011 now (live feed)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: app stores, apps, DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011, development, web appsCompanies: ApSynthPeople: Guillaume Gruet, Jeff Gruet Tags: app stores, apps, DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011, development, web appsCompanies: ApSynthPeople: Guillaume Gruet, Jeff GruetDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Salesforce announced today that it has acquired Heroku, which develops and deploys web-based applications that rely on the programming language Ruby on Rails, for $212 million as part of its Cloud 2 suite of cloud applications. The company made the announcement at the Dreamforce 2010 conference in San Francisco.Heroku helps developers streamline their Ruby on Rails web-based applications. Once a developer builds their app, they can launch it on Heroku, which then adjusts things like computing capacity and storage as needed. The community has more than 1 million developers and around 105,000 applications.Last fall, it started integrating with other services. For example, a company could launch their application on Heroku and then monitor it using services from another Rails startup, New Relic. The company also recently raised a round of funding worth $10 million in Mayand has raised $15 million total after it was incubated by Y Combinator. The round was led by Ignition Partners, with participation from existing investors Redpoint Ventures, Baseline Ventures, and Harrison Metal Capital. It&'s a pretty sizable exit for a company that was founded in 2007, and another testament to how important cloud computing has become for a public company like Salesforce to pay out more than $200 million. It&'s also another indication of a shift in Salesforce&'s strategy to focus more on developers, as Heroku specializes in removing headaches for developers working with Ruby on Rails.Salesforce already works with VMforce, which similarly helps Java developers run their applications natively on Salesforce&'s cloud application environment Force.com.Next Story: WeGame launches digital game distribution with a social twist Previous Story: Technology 500: Tech industry is on an upward swingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: acquisition, cloud computing, ruby on railsCompanies: Heroku, salesforce Tags: acquisition, cloud computing, ruby on railsCompanies: Heroku, salesforceMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
