Groupon has partnered with Live Nation to bring concertgoers deals on local events.Dubbed GrouponLive, the service will combine Groupon's local-distribution abilities with Live Nation's roster of events. Consumers will be able to use GrouponLive to find limited-time deals on sporting events, concerts, theater shows, and other live events, the companies said. However, it will be limited to North America. The pairing of Groupon, a deal-a-day provider, and Live Nation is an interesting one. Live Nation currently operates the world's most popular ticketing service, Ticketmaster. It also runs Live Nation Concerts, which puts on over 20,000 shows from 2,000 artists around the world.(Credit:Screenshot by Ron Reisinger/CNET) Last week, Live Nation reported its first-quarter earnings. The company's attendance was static year over year, but its ticket volume was up 11 percent. Though the company posted a net loss of $54 million on the quarter, its revenue was up substantially from the $723 million it made in the first quarter of 2010 to $849 million this year. With the help of Groupon, Live Nation believes it can aid "artists and others to reach ever larger audiences.""By adding this channel to our ticketing platform, we will also provide our venue partners with another option for driving ticket sales across a wide range of events," Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino said in a statement. "Our success is based on selling tickets and filling seats and GrouponLive gives us another platform to achieve this."The announcement of GrouponLive comes at a time when Groupon is facing more pressure than ever. Aside from competing services from Google, Facebook, and Amazon-backed LivingSocial, AT&T announced last week that it's launching a Groupon rival through its Yellow Pages site. Those firms have good reason to be jumping into the deal-a-day market. According to a report released earlier this year by local-media adviser Bia/Kelsey, deal-a-day U.S. revenue is expected to hit $4 billion in 2015. Last year, the market's revenue was $873 million.GrouponLive will launch at some point before the "summer concert season," the companies said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

0 Vote(s)

Boeings 747-8 Intercontinental takes off for its first flight.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)EVERETT, Wash.--If you don't think that the latest model of an airplane that first took to the air 42 years ago could be fresh, majestic, and iconic upon its own initial foray into sky, then you didn't see Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental take off on its first flight today.Resplendent in its all-new orange, red, and white livery, and sparkling in the mid-morning sun, the biggest and most fuel-efficient passenger airplane in Boeing's history took off from Paine Field here at 9:58 a.m. PT before a cheering crowd of hundreds, if not thousands, of company employees and their families, 747 fans, and dozens of journalists and other observers. Just prior to take-off, a voice on a public address system here was heard to say, "Ready, ready, go." And go it did.Boeing's 747-8 Intercontinental flies skyward (photos) The plane is being piloted by Mark Feuerstein and Paul Stemer. To some, the 747 line is an outdated relic of late-1960s-era aviation romanticism, but it was hard to think of the Intercontinental as anything but the cutting edge of design as its beautiful figure, complete with lovely curved wings and a gleaming paint job, made its way gracefully into the sky above Boeing's giant assembly plant here, the largest building in the world by volume. The plan is for the plane to be airborne for at least a couple of hours, during which time it will fly west over Puget Sound and conduct a series of tests before landing in the early afternoon at Boeing Field in Seattle.Boeing has been working on the 747-8 Intercontinental for years, and last month, it formally unveiled the new jumbo jet at a huge ceremony here. The cargo version of the plane, the 747-8 Freighter, made its own first flight on February 8, 2010. The Intercontinental has suffered some delays, but nothing along the lines of what its cousin, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, has gone through: an on-board instrument fire, supply-chain problems, a machinists' strike, and more.

0 Vote(s)

Intel announced shipments of the first 3G chips that sport its branding today at Mobile World Congress--the fruits of its acquisition of Infineon's wireless business. Apple&39's iPad uses what is now an Intel 3G chip--formerly Infineon.(Credit:Apple)"Intel Inside" takes on a new meaning with 3G chips. After the acquisition, Intel Mobile Communications has overnight become a major supplier of so-called baseband processors, which handle the 3G connection and are one of the most critical chips in a smartphone ortablet. Intel's--formerly Infineon's--3G chips are used in prominent devices such as theiPhone andiPad. Announced today, the XMM 6260 is designed for smartphones and can be coupled with a smartphone's application processor or offered as a standalone solution for PC modems and data cards, Intel said. The HSPA+ technology "comprises a fully integrated HSPA+ system solution supporting HSPA category 14 (21 megabits per second) in the downlink and category 7 (11.5Mbps) in the uplink," according to Intel. Intel's MWC wireless rollouts don't stop there. The world's largest chipmaker also announced LTE technology, generically referred to as 4G. The multimode (LTE/3G/2G) platform XMM 7060 "is suitable for integration in LTE-enabled portable devices such as mobile handsets, data cards/dongles and other embedded solutions," Intel said. The 3G silicon is shipping in volume now, while the LTE solution will be available for volume shipment in the second half of 2012. Though the world's largest manufacturer of chips, Intel will not be making these products, instead consigning production to an Asia-based manufacturer.

0 Vote(s)

The upcoming release candidate of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 browser is said to include a new feature that will let users selectively pick which parts of Web pages can load ActiveX elements.According to blog WinRumors, which is citing its own sources, the security-focused feature will be included inside the first release candidate for IE9, which is expected to arrive later this month. The filter will come in the form of a toggle that sits alongside the recently announced tracking protection feature--the one that blocks third-parties from tracking user behavior from site to site. Together, the two features would give users more control over what can be done by individual pieces of the page. When asked about the arrival of the feature, Microsoft declined to comment beyond saying, "Microsoft has not released this Internet Explorer 9 code to the public and we caution consumers and businesses that downloading software (including workarounds) from a non-genuine source can pose risks to their environment."ActiveX has had a long history as an integral part of Internet Explorer. Since its introduction in the mid-'90s, the technology played an important part in giving site makers ways to build increasingly interactive Web applications. But at the same time, ActiveX also became a means for sites and individuals to run exploits and other malicious code through the browser. Microsoft responded by beefing up IE's default security settings for ActiveX content, requiring user approval to run plug-ins, and implementing a blacklist to keep known malicious controls from loading. If implemented, this security feature would be another layer on top of these protective measures. IE9 has been in beta since mid-September of last year, and has proven to be a popular download among users, with the most recently released numbers pegging downloads north of 20 million.

0 Vote(s)

Motorola will finally split into two separate public companies next year on January 4, a move first announced in 2008.The company said yesterday that its board has approved the separation of Motorola Mobility Holdings from Motorola. The new Motorola Mobility company will handle the mobile phone and set-top box business. Motorola will rename itself to Motorola Solutions and focus on the enterprise and network business products.Sanjay Jha will run Motorola Mobility as CEO, while Greg Brown will assume the same role for Motorola Solutions. Both men have been running Motorola as co-CEOs.Stockholders who own Motorola shares by the close of business on December 21 will receive stock in the two companies. Motorola stockholders will get one share of Motorola Mobility common stock for every eight shares of Motorola common stock that they own. Motorola will then carry out a 1-for-7 reverse stock split of all Motorola common stock, effective before the market opens on January 4. That means every seven shares of Motorola common stock will be converted into one share of Motorola Solutions common stock.Starting January 4, Motorola Solutions will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MSI, while Motorola Mobility Holdings will begin trading on the NYSE under the symbol MMI. Motorola stockholders can find more information about the split and its effects on their shares at Motorola's investor page. The company first revealed its decision to separate back in March 2008 in light of its weak financials and pressure from investors. That move was supposed to occur in the third quarter of 2009, but the sour economy and Motorola's ongoing losses in 2008 and 2009 delayed the separation. Since then, though, Motorola has enjoyed a turnaround in profitability, thanks in huge part to the success of its Android phones."Today's announcement marks another important milestone toward the upcoming separation that is expected to benefit Motorola, its stockholders, as well as each company's respective customers and employees," Brown and Jha said in a joint statement. "We look forward to taking advantage of the opportunities before us as we begin the new year as two independent, publicly traded companies."In line with the separation, Brown will be elected chairman of the board for Motorola Solutions. The new company's board will also nominate David Dorman as a non-executive chairman. Dorman is currently serving the same role for Motorola. Other members of the board will include William Bratton, Michael Hayden, Vincent Intrieri, Judy Lewent, Samuel Scott III, Douglas Warner III, and John White.

0 Vote(s)

Of all the approaches to cutting carbon emissions, making charcoal and putting it in the ground as fertilizer would seem one of the least controversial. But a report published today offers words of caution around expecting too much from biochar.Biochar, also called man-made charcoal, is made by decomposing plants and other organic materials into charcoal through pyrolysis, or slowly burning biomass at high temperatures with no oxygen. The resulting biochar can be used as a soil fertilizer, a technique used by ancient civilizations in the Amazon.(Credit:USDA Agriculture Research Service)Unlike naturally decomposing organic materials, biochar holds onto carbon dioxide for hundreds or even thousands of years. For that reason, it's been touted by everyone from Virgin CEO Richard Branson to environmentalist James Lovelock as a promising method for fixing carbon dioxide in the ground. Biochar has also attracted detractors in the past few years who say that growing plants to create biochar would be a "false solution" to climate change.Environmental advocacy group the National Resources Defense Council today published an analysis that seeks to put some perspective on the potential on biochar. The study also proposes first steps for a U.S. policy to promote production of biochar on a commercial scale (click for PDF).An extensive study earlier this year estimated that as much as 12 percent of human-caused greenhouse gases could be offset by making biochar. But that number best represents the technical potential of biochar, not a realistic expectation, according to the NRDC. It notes that, because there are no commercial biochar production systems, it's difficult to assess the environmental benefits and financial cost. "The truth as to whether biochar is a cure-all or a scourge is apt to lie between theextremes, but we cannot say exactly where at present," according to the NRDC, which said it isn't in a position to endorse or discourage its development without further technical development and tests. Among some of the concerns is the environmental impact from diverting land for biochar and the energy footprint of transporting biomass. The NRDC said that using waste biomass, such as plant residue or manure, looks like the most promising feedstock. Uncertainty around carbon markets makes it difficult to assess the costs of these systems. Among its recommendations, the NRDC says that commercial-scale biochar facilities using slow pyrolisis use waste such as manure. It said that 5 to 10 demonstration facilities would cost between $100 million and $150 million.

0 Vote(s)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab will be getting Sprint ID.(Credit:Donald Bell/CNET)So far Sprint ID (review) has been available on only a trio of Android phones, but CEO Dan Hesse announced at a Sprint developer conference early this week that Sprint ID is spreading to two more high profile devices, the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Samsung Epic 4G.In addition, Notre Dame University is a launch partner for the Galaxy Tab with Sprint ID, and will give the Samsung-made, Android-running tablet to students so they can access the university's Sprint ID Pack, according to Sprint's Hesse.Sprint ID isn't ready to go on the duo of Samsung devices, and Hesse stressed that Sprint and Samsung are working together to make the Epic 4G smartphone and Galaxy Tab tablet Sprint ID-ready. CEO Hesse didn't specify if existing owners of the Galaxy Tab and Epic 4G will also have access to Sprint ID, or if the feature will only come preloaded on new units.Either way, the spread of Sprint ID to two new devices, along with Hesse's announcement of more Sprint ID partners, is proof that Sprint's betting big on Sprint ID as a bid to differentiate the carrier's Android offerings from AT&amp'T, Verizon, and T-Mobile's Android handsets.CEO Hesse said it himself in his keynote, "Sprint ID is very important to us."Of course, Sprint frames the importance of Sprint ID to the customer in terms of discovering essential applications from among the Android Market's 100,000 apps. Sprint's other message is that using an ID Pack--a bundle of apps, shortcuts, wallpaper, and so on, organized around a particular brand or theme--will help smartphone owners streamline the setup process for a new phone by easily loading multiple apps in one package. We have our reservations about Sprint ID's implementation so far, so it will be interesting to see if the feature catches on once it's available to more smartphone owners.Watch Sprint CEO Dan Hesse's keynote at the Sprint Open Developers Conference.

0 Vote(s)

Graeme Devine gave Apple a lot of credibility when he joined the company to work on iPhone game technologies. But Devine told the game blog Kotaku that his last day at Apple was Friday. The departure of one person may not be that important, of course. But gurus such as Devine can be very influential among the third-party developers who make games for Apple&'s devices. Without these evangelists to keep developers happy, Apple could lose its developers to other platforms.Devine said he was leaving the company to work on game development again. He&'ll make games that run on the iPhone and iPad, so he&'s not sour on Apple. Devine&'s job was to convince game developers to make games for Apple&'s devices. He also had to make sure that games worked great on iOS devices, or those that run the iPhone operating system such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.Devine said Apple didn&'t have an in-house game designer before he joined the company in 2009. In the past, games were treated like second-class citizens on a lot of Apple platforms. But when the iPhone took off, the No. 1 reason was because of the quality of its game apps. Only in the past year have the number of games been surpassed by books as the top category on the iPhone. As for Apple in the future, Device said, &''I can&'t comment on what&'s next inside Apple, but I can tell you, they really do &8216'get&' gaming.&''Devine has been making games since the late 1970s. He joined Atari at age 16 and founded Trilobyte, a well-known game studio, in 1990. The company was known for its 1992 horror game, The 7th Guest.
Therea4a4s no rest for the weary cyberbrain. IBMa4a4s Watson supercomputer, which soundly trounced its human competitors after a three-night Jeopardy competition, will be bringing its talents to the health care industry, thanks to a new research partnership announced today with Nuance Communications.Best known for its Dragon Natural Speaking speech recognition software, Nuance also focuses heavily on the health care industry. Its Clinical Language Understand technology provides doctors with speech recognition technology that can understand complex medical jargon. That technology will be combined with Watsona4a4s deep question answering, natural language processing and machine learning capabilities, as part of the research agreement.Ita4a4s not difficult to imagine what the combination of Nuancea4a4s technology and Watsona4a4s analytical computing system can provide. It could help doctors diagnose patients instantly, just as it can sift through its massive database to answer obscure Jeopardy questions. And it will continually get better, since Watson can learn from its mistakes. The combined Watson and Nuance project wona4a4t replace actual doctors, instead it will augment their ability to treat patients and help to erase human error that can cost lives.Products resulting from the IBM and Nuance partnership are expected to hit the market within two years. Researchers from the Columbia University Medical Center and the University of Maryland School of Medicine will also be participating.IBM mentioned that health care diagnosis was one of the potential uses of Watsona4a4s capabilities when we first covered it last month. Now that it looks like Watson is well on its way to helping doctors, we may also see the technology licensed for other uses, like tech support or enterprise knowledge management. IBM wouldna4a4t say at the time if it was talking to government agencies, but ita4a4s not difficult to see how Watson could be used to help analysts at agencies like the CIA sift through vast amounts of data.Next Story: OpenFeint Connect lets gamers socialize across different smartphones Previous Story: SolarCity makes another buy, outlines expansion plansPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: ai, health care, speech reconition, supercomputer, WatsonCompanies: IBM, Nuance Communications Tags: ai, health care, speech reconition, supercomputer, WatsonCompanies: IBM, Nuance CommunicationsDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
The comparisons between Microsoft&'s Kinect body-gesture motion-control system and the cool gesture-controlled computer in the 2002 sci fi movie Minority Report are getting old, but I can&'t help but think of that film when looking at developer Florian Echtler&'s multitouch interface hack (see video below) for Kinect. We reported earlier in the week that Kinect was hacked only a few days after its November 4 release, but at the time all hackers had to show for it was video of simple sensor readings. Now, there&'s a functioning demonstration of Kinect being used for multitouch gestures &8212' which honestly looks a lot like Microsoft&'s Surface tabletop multitouch technology, except it&'s on your TV.Echtler accomplished the hack by hooking the open source Kinect driver that&'s floating around the web to his custom multitouch software library. His hack is rough, but functional, and it&'s definitely a sign that Microsoft could eventually offer the same sort of multitouch functionality for browsing pictures directly on the Xbox 360.Via EngadgetNext Story: IGNITION to explore the future of media on December 2-3 in NYC Previous Story: Gmail creator Paul Buchheit leaves Facebook for Y CombinatorPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: hacks, Kinect, multitouch, Surface, xbox 360Companies: MicrosoftPeople: Florian Echtler Tags: hacks, Kinect, multitouch, Surface, xbox 360Companies: MicrosoftPeople: Florian EchtlerDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Apple made a big splash this year with its iAd network for high-quality ads from big brands, but new mobile ad network Moolah Media says it&'s already successful by aiming for advertisers who arena4a4t quite as high-end.The San Francisco startup is coming out of stealth mode today, but its services have been up-and-running for a month. Chief executive Shawn Scheuer said Moolah Media has already served more than 100 million impressions and generated more than 250,000 a4Aqualitya4 leads for its advertisers.a4AWe&'re not going to beat iAds on filling the first 5 percent of your inventory at $25 or $50 CPMs (payment per thousand impressions),a4 Scheuer said. a4ABut we will beat other people on filling the remaining 95 percent.a4Moolah came from the founders&' own experience trying to make money from their mobile app, Scheuer said. By using AdMob (now owned by Google) and various other ad networks, they were only able to earn 25 cent CPMs a4Aon a good day.a4 Then they discovered they could increase those CPMs by more than 10 times if they created their own custom ads, and now theya4a4re making the technology they developed available on their network. The key, Scheuer said, is a focus on a pay-per-performance model, where youa4a4re paying for actions and not just eyeballs, coupled with greater publisher transparency. For example, he said, most major ad networks only let you target ads by phone, carrier, and a few extremely broad categories. Moolah lets you see ad performance by individual publisher, and it kicked out an early publisher that wasn&'t performing. Moolah also creates special phone numbers for ads so businesses can tell when customer calls were spurred by a specific ad.a4AOn the fixed Web side, these ideas are not new,a4 he said, but they haven&'t been brought effectively into the mobile world.Moolah is self-funded and is already profitable, he added.Next Story: Google drops bank in RelayRides to turn your car into a Zipcar Previous Story: Premium ad company RGM Group thrives in the tough economyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: mobile ads, mobile advertisingCompanies: Moolah MediaPeople: Shawn Scheuer Tags: mobile ads, mobile advertisingCompanies: Moolah MediaPeople: Shawn ScheuerAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
