Android has surged ahead of Apple for the first time as the most popular smartphone OS, according to Millennial Media's mobile ad network. In Millennial Media's December report, Google's mobile operating system won 46 percent of all ad impressions (the number of times an ad is displayed), compared with 32 percent for Apple's iOS. In November, the two operating systems were neck and neck at 38 percent each.Rounding up the rest of the competition, Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS grabbed 16 percent of ad impressions in December, Nokia's Symbian nabbed 2 percent, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile snagged 1 percent.(Credit:Millennial Media)Looking separately at mobile device makers, Apple accounted for 3 of the top 30 devices, with itsiPhone,iPod Touch, andiPad. The iPhone, not surprisingly, ranked No. 1 among the 30 devices. Collectively, Apple's three devices accounted for 21 percent of all ad impressions on mobile devices on the network. Samsung as a whole ranked in second place behind Apple for the largest number of ad impressions thanks to its solid lineup of Android phones. And the company's Window-based Samsung Code managed to squeeze in enough ad impressions to make it the only Windows Mobile device to make it into Millennial Media's top 30. Overall, Samsung was credited with 17 percent of all ad impressions and 7 of the top 30 devices. In third place was HTC with 15 percent share of all ad impressions and 9 devices--the highest number of any manufacturer. RIM took fourth place with 12 percent and 5 devices. Of note, RIM's BlackBerry Curve was No. 2--behind the iPhone. Overall, smartphones continued to rise in popularity compared with feature phones, accounting for 23 of the top 30 devices last month and winning a combined 48 percent share of all ad impressions. Looking ahead, Millennial Media's sees not only Android but also RIM and Windows Phone 7 applying pressure on Apple's iOS this year. But one question the blog doesn't address is how the upcoming Verizon iPhone might upset the mobile apple cart and impact the fight between Android and Apple for ad impressions and market share. According to Millennial Media, its ad network reaches 85 percent of U.S. mobile Web users.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Google)Google has unveiled a new doodle on its home page today to serve up some interactive Christmas cheer.Topping the company's home page for the next two-and-a-half days, the new doodle is more ambitious and challenging than past holiday doodles. Most of the Christmas doodles that have graced the site's home page over the past 12 years have been relatively simpler designs that tweaked the familiar Google logo. But the new doodle displays a collection of festive scenes created to suggest that logo in a rather abstract fashion. At first glance, you may not see the Google logo in the new doodle. But closer inspection reveals how each individual scene joins together to paint an overall approximation of the logo. And though the logo may look like just a set of pictures, it's also interactive. Hovering over each scene increases its size so that you can appreciate more of the original design. And clicking on a scene opens a Google search page designed to reveal its origins. The scene farthest left in the doodle, for instance, displays a drawing of St. Basil's Cathedral in Russia and points you to a page of search results on the famous cathedral. Another paints a picture of Buche de Noel, a Christmas dessert served in different countries, and serves up a page with recipes on the dish. A third scene shows Santa Claus and his reindeer atop a roof and brings you to a page where you can learn about "Up on the Housetop," a Christmas song created in 1860.Behind the scenes with Google's Doodle team (photos) View the full galleryGoogle has become renowned for its regular output of doodles, not just for holidays but also for news events, birthdays, and other special occasions. Past doodles have celebrated the Fourth of July, the Olympics, and even Einstein's birthday. Each doodle typically plays around with the classic Google logo, transforming it into something that can visually commemorate a special date in time.Though Google's doodles may seem like a fun and frivolous pastime, creating one is actually real work for the doodling artists, as CNET's Daniel Terdiman discovered earlier this year. Knowing that their design will be seen by hundreds of millions of users, the artists have to make sure the doodle is fun, creative, accurate, and appealing to a large number of people. Doodles honoring holidays and religious celebrations can be especially tricky since the company wants them to be as inclusive as possible.Because of the complexity of the new Christmas doodle, creating it took five artists about 250 hours, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal. Google's doodle team is led by chief doodler Micheal Lopez and includes Susie Sahim, Jennifer Hom, Ryan Germick, and Mike Dutton. To create the new holiday design, the doodlers spent six months working on the concept of the 17 interactive holiday scenes. The team had to decide which images would be used for the doodle, eventually choosing to celebrate the themes of food, dance, architecture, and textiles. The work was divided among the five team members who would meet regularly to discuss their progress. Initially the team had designed the doodle to reveal itself slowly over three days, ending on Christmas, according to the Journal story, but Google executives who checked out the design last week suddenly wanted the doodle to unveil itself in one single day--hence today's multipart mural. As the doodles have advanced over the years, they've become more than just static images. This past Thanksgiving, for instance, saw a series of three doodles that linked to recipes from "Barefoot Contessa" TV host and author Ina Garten. October 9th honored the birthday of John Lennon by offering a doodle that let you click on it to launch a small animated film with a clip of "Imagine" playing in the background. And in early September, Google used a very lively animated doodle to tease the arrival of its Google Instant search technology. The notion of a doodle on the home page came about in 1998 when Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted a simple doodle to spoof the idea of the "out of office" message, leading to a Burning Man image behind the Google logo. After that, the doodle starting taking off in 1999 with several launched to honor various holidays. Since then, the doodle has become a tradition--a way for Google to visually commemorate days that have special meaning to its users and of course attract more people to its site.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Mozilla)Jetpack, the revamped foundation for add-ons that customizeFirefox, could arrive in its first beta form Monday.Myk Melez, a leader of the project, issued a release candidate yesterday for the software and hopes to release the beta Monday, he said in a mailing list announcement."To have the most successful possible release, it's imperative that we test the hell out of this release candidate to shake out any last remaining release blockers," he said, referring to bugs that are bad enough to hold up the software.Jetpack, taking a page from the Google Chrome extensions playbook, is a mechanism to let developers write add-ons using Web programming technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Apple followed suit with its own similar extensions mechanism in Safari 5, and Opera is doing the same with Opera 11, currently in beta testing. The approaches are similar enough that Opera Chief Technology Officer Hakon Wium Lie believes that the browser extension framework eventually could be standardized.Extending browsers lets people significantly expand what the software can do without burdening the vast majority of users with undesired features. What Mozilla calls add-ons its rivals generally call extensions. They're separate from plug-ins such as Adobe Systems' Flash Player or Unity 3D's gaming engine, which integrate through a different interface.Firefox has had add-ons for years, but using a more complicated technology called XUL. It's sophisticated to permit very elaborate modifications to the browser, but Mozilla believes Jetpack will make add-on programming easier and more accessible. It also hopes the add-ons will be less prone to a major problem with today's add-ons, incompatibilities that break them when new versions of the browser arrive. The Jetpack 1.0 beta won't have all possible interfaces Mozilla hopes to open up to developers. However, Mozilla expects to keep those interfaces it does have stable in future versions, Melez said.

0 Vote(s)

In third place, Microsoft's Bing captured an 11.5 percent share of the market, up 0.3 of a percentage point. And Yahoo saw its share at 15.6 percent, down 0.2 of a percentage point from the prior month. These figures cover explicit core searches only, meaning searches manually entered on a Web page.(Credit:ComScore)Eyeing the actual numbers, the U.S. search market saw 16.6 billion core searches overall in October. Google captured 11 billion of those, a 4 percent gain from the prior month. Yahoo accounted for 2.7 billion, up 2 percent from September, while Microsoft took in 1.9 billion, a gain of 7 percent from the month before.October was the second month that ComScore also tracked "powered by" searches, meaning organic searches powered by the likes of Google and Bing for other Web sites.Google's "powered by" share covers its own properties as well as those at AOL and Ask's MyWebSearch, while Bing's share includes its own sites along with Yahoo's Web, image, and video searches.
Disney&39's &39'Winnie the Pooh&39' will hit theaters on July 15, 2011. The film retains the look of the classic Pooh tales.(Credit:Walt Disney Pictures)Get ready for a new onslaught of Tigger and Pooh toys, games, cartoons, T-shirts, hats, and every other sort of memorabilia. Disney's new "Winnie the Pooh" is coming.Disney today released the first trailer for its forthcoming film, which is the first Pooh adventure from Disney to hit the silver screen in more than 35 years. The studio said the new movie, which is planned for a July 15, 2011 release, will feature all the favorites from the A.A. Milne tales, including, obviously, Pooh, as well as Tigger, Piglet, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, and of course Eeyore, whose tail has gone missing. To make the film, Disney brought back Burny Mattinson--an animator on the 1974 Pooh featurette "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too!"--as senior story artist, and the film was co-directed by Stephen Anderson and Don Hall. In addition, the film features the voices of Craig Ferguson, Tom Kenny, and Bud Luckey. Actress and musician Zooey Deschanel is the vocalist in a brand-new version of the "Winnie the Pooh" theme song, Disney said."Inspired by five stories from A.A. Milne's books in Disney's classic, hand-drawn art style," Disney said, the film "reunites audiences with the [honey]-loving, philosophical bear and friends Eeyore, Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet and Owl in a wild quest to save [their friend] Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit."

0 Vote(s)

To quote Dwight Hansen, I do know a thing or two about a thing or two and as such I&'m allowed, sometimes, to prognosticate. Even as we thrust our fists into the air triumphantly when we snag the last tattered box containing a Kung Zhu hamster value bundle, the IT industry never sleeps and, like a shark, it must keep moving to survive. Based on what we&'ve seen this year, let&'s take a look at what we can expect to see next year when we once again fall into the Black Friday Breech.Chrome OS Laptops and Tablets &8211' We know that Chrome OS is coming in 2011 and I wouldn&'t be surprised if early versions start appearing at CES. Why is this important Because Chrome OS is an OS for the everyman. It is &''just&'' a browser which means, in theory, that the problems related to many OSes won&'t be a problem here. It will, in short, be the ultimate &''default&'' OS for beginning users and it will save us all from the Microsoft and Apple &''taxes&'' simultaneously. If Android is any guide, the first versions will be garbage but by November 2011 they should be in the second release (Peanut Butter Cup or whatever they&'ll call it).Blackberry Playbook &8211' We&'ve been pretty hard on the Playbook because Matt and I don&'t think Blackberry can make non-keyboard devices for a general market. The Storm, if you&'ll recall, was a piece and the Storm 2 wasn&'t much better. But a brand is a brand and a Blackberry device will sell. Best Buy even wants to sell it, which can make or break a device. Also look for an upcoming Palm OS slate from HP. Impressive Playstation Phone &8211' This came out of left field but it seems quite interesting. Sony Ericsson is working on a new phone designed for game players. It appears to be PSP compatible (we aren&'t sure yet) and it will launch in February. Our own tipster told us that the screen and game playing experience were &''incredible.&'' If they can pull this off and offer great games in the Android store SE will finally have a winner.iPad 2 &8211' MG created a speculative history about what would happen when the iPad 2 drops and it sounds pretty exciting. First, you&'ll definitely get a front facing camera and a nicer screen and, if all goes according to plan, you&'ll be running it on Verizon.Google TV Powered Cable Box/DVR &8211' Cable isn&'t going anywhere, even with the rise of a la carte and general TV piracy. That&'s why Google TV needs to end up in more devices and that&'s why it needs to be integrated more deeply with a general set top box experience. If there&'s one thing I enjoy about the Logitech Revue it&'s how it plays quite nicely with the DISH box. However, if all of that were integrated into one uniform UI, you might be able to sell the device to more than just hard core geeks.Nintendo 3DS &8211' This year&'s hot toy will be the Kinect. Next year&'s will be the Nintendo 3DS. Like the Kinect, the 3DS is kind of a gimmick but it will breathe life into the DS platform and give Nintendo another piece of hardware to sell until they come out with a new console in about 2012. The Kackel Dackel &8211' Sorry. I just had to put this in here.

0 Vote(s)

The iPhone and Android are (unsurprisingly) duking it out as the most desirable smartphone platforms among consumers, according to October 2010 figures from research company Nielsen. One interesting factoid from the data: Among smartphone upgraders, men slightly prefer Google&'s Android platform over the iPhone (33 percent vs. the iPhone&'s 29 percent), and women prefer the iPhone by a significant amount (31 percent vs. 23 percent for Android). RIM&'s BlackBerry platform is the third-most desirable platform by gender, garnering interest from about 13 percent of both men and women.Marketing may be a big reason for the gender preference. Ever since Verizon&'s $100 million marketing campaign for the original Droid last year, Android phones have generally been marketed as &''manly&'' devices, and at the same time they position the iPhone as &''girly.&'' T-Mobile&'s ads for the MyTouch 4G, which feature an attractive young woman representing the device, is the first major Android campaign I can think of that&'s more female-centered. (Notably, T-Mobile&'s ads also resemble Apple&'s Mac vs. PC ads.)Looking at platform desirability outside of gender, the iPhone has a 2 percentage point lead (30 percent vs. 28 percent) over Android in terms of likely smartphone upgraders. Current featurephone owners prefer Android slightly by 3 percentage points, while current smartphone owners are looking forward to the iPhone more by 7 percentage points (35 percent vs. 28 percent). Featurephone owners are less likely to have decided on their next smartphone platform &8212' 25 percent say they&'re &''not sure&'', compared to 13 percent of smartphone owners.Nielsen reports that 29.7 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers own smartphones that run &''full operating systems&'' like Android, or the iPhone OS. The iPhone and BlackBerry are fighting it out overall device dominance with around 27 percent of the market each, but Android isn&'t far behind at 23 percent.Next Story: That was fast: Windows Phone 7 jailbreak tool pulled Previous Story: Telegent ships 100Mth chip for TV on mobile phonesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Blackberry, iOS, iPhone, smartphonesCompanies: Apple, Google, Nielsen Company, RIM Tags: Android, Blackberry, iOS, iPhone, smartphonesCompanies: Apple, Google, Nielsen Company, RIMDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Semiconductor sales are expected to grow 32.8 percent in 2010 to $300.5 billion. But next year and the year after will see more moderate growth, the Semiconductor Industry Asscociation, the chip industry&'s trade group, predicted today. It forecasted sales growing just 6 percent to $318.7 billion in 2011 and 3.4 percent in 2012 to $329.7 billion. Overall, from 2009 through 2012, the compound annual growth rate is estimated to be 13.4 percent. Chip sales are closely watched as a barometer for the health of the tech industry, since chips are used in all things electronic. The Washington, D.C.-based trade group will hold its annual dinner in San Jose, Calif. this evening, where it will honor George Scalise, its longtime president who retired earlier this year. He was replaced by Brian Toohey. Toohey said that the industry had strong demand across a broad range of markets in 2010, but sales are expected to slow down as the economy recovers and consumer confidence comes back over a longer period than previously expected. The chip industry employs about 185,000 people in the U.S. and is the backbone for the $1.1 trillion electronics industry.Next Story: IssueBurner: Finally, task and issue tracking with email Previous Story: Optimized Energy Networks builds energy systems that even a Republican could lovePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: semiconductorsCompanies: Semiconductor Industry AssociationPeople: Brian Toohey, Geroge Scalise Tags: semiconductorsCompanies: Semiconductor Industry AssociationPeople: Brian Toohey, Geroge ScaliseDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Editor&'s note: This guest post was written by Alex Ahlund (@alexahlund), the former CEO of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile app directory Appolicious. He is currently an advisor to Appolicious. In his previous guest posts, he gave us his picks for top iPhone apps. With the ubiquitous media coverage surrounding the iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) app market, it&'s important to remember that Android also is making huge headway. More than 100,000 apps are now available in the Android Market. Within the last six months, Android devices have reigned supreme, comprising 32 percent of all new smartphone purchases. There is finally a larger selection of models being manufactured and more carriers offering them. When the first Android device launched, I predicted that the OS would surpass iPhone in the coming years. While this looks to be true, those of us involved in the app industry are concerned with something more specific: Who will have the most active app marketplaceCurrently, iOS is still the definitive winner. There is not enough app interest on the Android consumer front to warrant a mass exodus just yet. I have a pretty simple metric for determining the potential of an app market: Is PopCap involved If the answer is no, then the market is still too green. While PopCap has yet to enter the Android space, they have noted plans to port some of their game titles in the coming months. This supports the notion that Android has big potential, but it&'s still too early.Nevertheless, Android does have serious potential, and there are some fantastic apps already available!
