Microsoft Montage turns your Web searches into rich news albums.(Credit:Microsoft)A new Web app from Microsoft can bring life to your Web searches by using them to build customizable news-oriented Web albums.Demoed at Le Web conference last week, Microsoft's Montage can take virtually any topic or keyword that you enter and create a Web page filled with articles and photographs grabbed from news sites, Twitter, YouTube, and a variety of other sources. You can customize your page with different layouts and change each section of the page to point to specific sources of information. When you're done, you can save your page and publish it or share it with other people. To get started with Montage, just type a word or phrase in the Create field, such as Steve Jobs. In response, the app creates a page pulling together the latest news stores and photos of the Apple chief. You can accept the default layout or try different layouts to play with the rows and columns. After you accept the layout you like, you can customize each specific section or widget on the page by removing it, tweaking its own layout, or changing the news source.Montage lets you pick content from several sources, including news stories, RSS Feeds, Twitter timelines, images, and YouTube videos. You can even add your own text to a section. Each section then links to the original news source so you can read the full story. The content in each section can remain static by pointing to specific news stores or change dynamically by pointing to Twitter feeds.Once you've finished designing your page, you can save it to your own "My Montage" page, publish it to the public Montage gallery, and share it via Facebook or Twitter. You can also search for and browse pages created by other people at the gallery.Montage was designed at Microsoft's Fuse Labs, a new initiative launched last year to focus on social computing projects.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's Chrome Web Store offers a variety of apps for download.Google's Chrome Web Store opened for business today, providing a centralized online marketplace for downloading Web apps for the Chrome operating system and the Chrome browser. The marketplace, similar to Google's Android Market and Apple'siPhone App Store, is designed for Chrome 8, which was released last week. It offers apps, as well as extensions and themes, for customizing the browser. Amazon said it is offering its Windowshop app, a stripped-down version of Amazon.com, on the marketplace. There also is an NPR news app, Facebook Photo Zoom, a New York Times app, and lots of games. The check-out process is integrated with Google Checkout. The Chrome Web Store, which was expected to launch in October, was demonstrated at a Google event in San Francisco earlier today. The marketplace is only available in the U.S., but will expand to other countries early next year. "The Chrome Web Store itself can be accessed using any browser. Currently only users of Google Chrome are able to install an app from the Chrome Web Store, which adds a shortcut on the Chrome browser's new tab page," a Google spokesperson said in a statement. "The protocols for describing and installing apps are all open-sourced and are free to be implemented by other browsers." Updated 2:26 p.m. PTto correct that you do not need the Google Chrome operating system to use the store, 2:07 p.m. PTwith Google comment, and 1:10 p.m. PTwith more details.

0 Vote(s)

It should come as no surprise that Apple and Android are the two "most desired" smartphone systems, according to a new Nielsen survey of mobile phone users. But the results vary a bit based on the people who were surveyed.Among current smartphone owners questioned by Nielsen, the survey results out today show that 35 percent are looking to buy aniPhone as their next device, while 28 percent plan to go for an Android phone. But among those who currently own a feature phone and want to upgrade to a smartphone, 25 percent are eyeing an iPhone and 28 percent will likely opt for an Android device.(Credit:Nielsen)To define the difference: smartphones run a third-party operating system, such as Apple's iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Nokia's Symbian, and they support third-party mobile apps. Feature phones use a proprietary OS, are typically unable to run third-party apps, and usually have other limitations.Among age groups, the iPhone proved slightly more desirable than an Android phone to people 18-24, 25-34, and especially those 55 and older, according to Nielsen. Those 35-54 preferred an Android device as their next phone by a slight margin. And by gender, women favor the iPhone as their next purchase, while men are more interested in Android.Smartphone owners were more decisive than feature phone users about their next device in terms of operating system. Among those who presently use a feature phone, 25 percent said they were "not sure" what their next phone would be, compared with only 13 percent of smartphone users who were equally uncertain. People 55 and older were also less certain than younger users over which mobile OS they'd want for their next phone.Overall, 29.7 percent of all U.S. mobile subscribers use smartphones, compared with 70.3 percent who still have feature phones. The most common smartphones platforms in the U.S. are the iPhone's iOS and the BlackBerry OS, each with 27 percent of the market, while Android now holds a 22 percent share, according to Nielsen's data.(Credit:Nielsen)

0 Vote(s)

The WD TV Live Hub from Western Digital.(Credit:Western Digital)Western Digital is trying to build upon the success of its WD TV Live Plus with the launch of the WD TV Live Hub, a set-top box that delivers even more functionality for entertainment seekers. The WD TV Live Hub comes with a built-in 1TB hard drive, allowing customers to store all kinds of video and audio content on the device. In fact, Western Digital said the product includes support for 1080p video formats, .mkv, .mp4, and .mov. In addition, video, music, or photos stored on the device can be streamed to any DLNA/UPnP-compatible products, including the Xbox 360 andPlayStation 3. Western Digital also said that the content can be streamed to theiPad,iPhone, and Android-based smartphones with the help of third-party applications. The WD TV Live Hub boasts user interface configuration options that allow users to change screen backgrounds or themes. The device comes with two USB ports that let users transfer content from cameras, external hard drives, or other products to the WD TV Live Hub. But the set-top box doesn't solely cater to those who want to watch their own content. The device also includes support for Netflix streaming, YouTube, Flickr, and Pandora. It's the only product in Western Digital's line of set-top boxes to feature Blockbuster On Demand. The WD TV Live Hub also includes Facebook integration, allowing users to upload photos or videos, as well as change their status and view their news feeds. The WD TV Live Hub is a definite step up over the WD TV Live Plus, which lacks the 1TB hard drive and the ability to stream content throughout the home. But like the WD TV Live Plus, the WD TV Live Hub lacks Wi-Fi. WD TV Live Hub owners will be forced to connect to the Web via Ethernet or buy an accessory to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It's unfortunate. And it's a glaring omission in a field with several devices, including the Apple TV and Logitech Revue, that do come with Wi-Fi built in. The WD TV Live Hub is available now and retails for $200. CNET will be going hands-on with the set-top box next week.

0 Vote(s)

Google admits to collecting passwords, e-mails, and URLs.(Credit:CNET Asia)Google collected e-mails, passwords, and URLs while the company was snapping images for its Street View service, it admitted in a blog post today."In some instances, entire e-mails and URLs were captured, as well as passwords," Google's senior vice president of engineering and research, Alan Eustace, wrote in a blog post today. However, Eustace was quick to point out that "most of the data is fragmentary," and the company will delete the information "as soon as possible."Google's admission that it collected passwords and e-mails adds further detail to the comments it made back in May when it first announced it had been collecting data from Wi-Fi networks. At the time, the company said that it inadvertently collected "publicly broadcast SSID information and MAC addresses using our Street Viewcars."Eustace acknowledged in today's blog post that at the time of the original announcement, Google had not "analyzed in detail the data we had mistakenly collected, so we did not know for sure what the disks contained."However, several government regulators have. In fact, the Canadian government revealed findings this week that matched much of what Google admitted to today. The government found that a password and username "were included in an e-mail message that a person was sharing with others." In addition, the government's privacy officials found 678 phone numbers, 787 e-mail headers, and "at least five" complete e-mail messages.Although the Canadian government said that Google's data collection broke the law, Jennifer Stoddart, the country's privacy commissioner, closed the investigation, saying that it was the "result of a careless error."Canada wasn't alone. Earlier this year, French privacy officials who analyzed Google's data also said that passwords and e-mails were collected by Google. But U.K. watchdogs said back in July that they had not found "meaningful personal details" in the data they analyzed.Regardless, Google seems committed to ensuring it doesn't suffer a similar embarrassment in the future. The company said that its director of privacy, Alma Whitten, will help "build effective privacy controls" into Google products and practices. In addition, the company will initiate a new "information security awareness program" in December that will require all employees to be trained on the importance of privacy and security. Finally, Google will require all project leaders to have a "privacy design document" that will detail how user data is kept private in a particular product. The company said those documents will be reviewed by the project leaders' managers, as well as the company's internal audit team.

0 Vote(s)

According to his Twitter feed, he&'s been waiting in line by himself since 6:30AM Central.VentureBeat executive editor Owen Thomas spoke to Muehlbauer this morning: &''Honestly, I thought there would be more people here,&'' he said. &''But now I&'m committed.&'' The Apple popup store, which was put together to attract attendees of the South by Southwest Interactive festival running today and tomorrow, will open at 5PM Central.Plans for the store came together quickly this week, according to the Austin-American Statesman. An Apple representative contacted an Austin real estate firm on Monday to confirm the location. Apple already has permanent stores in Southwest and North Austin, but not in Downtown Austin.Of course, Muehlbauer won&'t be the only person waiting in line for long. But you can bet the technology press will be paying keen attention to lines for the iPad 2, since huge crowds didn&'t appear for the Verizon iPhone&'s launch.Update: Muehlbauer tells us that three other people have joined him in line.Next Story: Japan&'s 8.9 quake puts cloud data at risk, stresses mobile services Previous Story: How the Angry Birds deal could lead to mobile gaming nirvanaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPad 2, sxsw, SXSW 2011, tabletsCompanies: ApplePeople: John Muehlbauer Tags: iPad 2, sxsw, SXSW 2011, tabletsCompanies: ApplePeople: John MuehlbauerDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
