The official logo for the now-defunct AT-AT for America movement(Credit:Andrew Grexa) In "Star Wars," after the destruction of Alderaan, Obi-wan Kenobi collapses in a seat and solemnly says, "I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."Something slightly terrible has happened: Lucasfilm has cut short a grassroots movement to build a full-scale, fully functional AT-AT vehicle from "The Empire Strikes Back." Michael Koehler, the 38-year-old social-media consultant behind the idea, shared the unfortunate news on the AT-AT for America blog:"Long story short, I can no longer solicit any kind of support for the AT-AT for America project in its current form. Seeking financial donations to build a piece of Lucasfilm intellectual property goes far beyond what is considered proper."Koehler wrote that the biggest flaw in the plan was the lack of actual planning, according to Steve Sansweet, official fan liaison for Lucasfilm. The rep informed Koehler that the idea should have been discussed with the studio before being shared with the world. Koehler admitted that the AT-AT for America idea had grown far faster than he imagined, and he seemed surprised at the media coverage. All donations for the project will be refunded, but hope is not lost yet. Koehler said he still wants to build something with the hundreds of people who expressed interest. "I have a tiny kernel of an idea with what we could do going forward with AT-AT for America that I will discuss with Mr. Sansweet and Lucasfilm once I get a plan together," Koehler wrote.

0 Vote(s)

Bing now knows a little bit more about where you are, and where you've been.Earlier today, Microsoft announced that Bing now makes use of user location to change the way search results are ordered. This means if you search for something like a restaurant, it will guess that you're looking for a match nearby where the search is being made and will automatically serve up items that fall into that category.Google added a similar feature to its search tool in February of last year, after having introduced it to its mobile search two months prior. Joining the location feature is a tweak to how the search engine orders results on searches that have been done in the past. If you had clicked on a result lower down from the top, Bing will put it at the top the next time you do that same search. In a blog post outlining some of the changes, Aidan Crook and Sanaz Ahari from Bing's search team said the reason for changing this particular behavior is that when users are searching to find particular sites by name, they tend to do the same thing when they do the search again."Our research shows that users commonly re-issue such navigational queries and the intent of that user rarely changes," the post said. "This new personal search feature uses this human behavior as its core premise - if Bing thinks a user is trying to 're-find' a site, the relevant result is promoted to the top position on the page."Microsoft says both features are currently available only to Bing users in the U.S.

0 Vote(s)

In the competition between native applications for mobile phones vs. Web applications, hardware support often makes native apps an obvious choice for programmers. But the World Wide Web Consortium is tackling one area, touch-screen support, in an effort that could help Web apps catch up.The W3C published an editor's draft of a new touch-screen standard for Web apps today. The draft specification is designed also for devices such as drawingtablets that don't have a screen, but today's hot market for smartphones makes touch screens the more important focus.A standard--if designed well and adopted--would make programmers' lives easier by making it possible to write Web application software that would work on multiple browsers. And with touch screens expanding from the high-end smartphone market to lower-end models and to tablets, touch screens are becoming a dominant technology for user interfaces.Of course, touch screens work to an extent withmobile browsers today. But they chiefly just reproduce the mouse era, and touch screens can be different. Multitouch is one obvious difference, but the draft specification also accommodates subtleties such as the pressure of a touch event and the radius of the spot being touched. The specification defines how a browser would report information in a standard way to a Web application, letting programmers write software that responds to the events. And as with many Web specifications, it uses a real-world browser as a starting point. In this case, Apple'sSafari."Editor Doug Schepers did the sensible thing and started with Apple's specification," said Peter-Paul Koch, a consultant who closely monitors browser issues and in particular mobile browsers, in a blog post.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)While ILCs may be the more interesting enthusiast cameras, the more popular market seems to be the compact, fixed-lens models, most notably the Canon PowerShot S95. Olympus forges into that market with its XZ-1, a promising looking model that's not quite as compact as the S95, but with an exceptionally fast f1.8 lens and a sleek design that rivals models like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 in size and operation. I had some time to play with a preproduction version of the camera--can't really make any judgements about photo quality or performance, unfortunately--and think it's got a nice combination of features and usability that make it a model to watch.First, here's how the XZ-1 compares to the rest of the crowd (with the exception of the Samsung TL500--no room in the table):&nbsp'Canon PowerShot G12Canon PowerShot S95 Nikon P7000 Olympus XZ-1Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5Sensor (effective resolution)10-megapixel CCD10-megapixel CCD10-megapixel CCD10-megapixel CCD10-megapixel CCD1/1.7-inch1/1.7-inch1/1.63-inch1/1.63-inch1/1.63-inchSensitivity rangeISO 80 - ISO 3200ISO 80 - ISO 3200ISO 100 - ISO 3,200ISO 100 - ISO 6,400ISO 80 - ISO 3200Lens28-140mmf2.8-4.5 5x28-105mmf2-4.9 3.8x28-200mm f2.8-5.6 7.1x28-112mmf1.8-2.54x24-90mm f2-3.3 3.8xClosest focus (inches)0.42.03.20.40.4Continuous shooting1.1fps frames n/a1.9fps frames n/a1.3fps 44 JPEG/n/a raw2fps 23 JPEG/8 raw2.5fps 3 JPEG/n/a rawViewfinderOpticalOpticalOptional OVFOptional EVFOptional OVF or EVFAutofocusn/a Contrast AFn/a Contrast AF9 area Contrast AF11 area Contrast AF23-area Contrast AFMeteringn/an/a256 segment324 arean/aShutter15-1/4000 sec15-1/1600 sec60-1/4000 sec60-1/2000 sec' bulb to 16 min60-1/4000 secFlashYesYesYesYesYesHot shoeYesNoYesYesYesLCD2.8-inch articulated 461,000 dots3-inch fixed 461,000 dots 3-inch fixed 921,000 dots3-inch fixed OLED 610,000 dots3-inch fixed 460,000 dotsImage stabilizationOpticalOpticalOpticalSensor shiftOpticalVideo (best quality)720/24p H.264 QuickTime MOV720/24p H.264 QuickTime MOV Stereo720/24p H.264 QuickTime MOV720/30p Motion JPEG AVI720/30p AVCHD Lite MonauralManual iris and shutter in videoNoNon/atkYesOptical zoom while recordingYesNon/atkYesMic inputNoNoYesYesNoBattery life (CIPA rating)390 shots220 shots350 shots320 shots400 shotsDimensions (WHD, inches)4.4 x 3.0 x 2.03.9 x 2.3 x 1.24.5 x 3.1 x 1.84.4 x 2.6 x 1.74.3 x 2.6 x 1.7Weight (ounces)14.5 (est)7 (est)12.7 (est)9.69.2Mfr.
DOE Secretary Steven Chu has said he&39's skeptical of fuel cells providing a successful energy source for vehicles in the near future, but sees them as a viable energy storage option.(Credit:U.S. Department of Energy)The Department of Energy announced yesterday that it's interested in funding more fuel cell research and development projects, as well as cost analysis studies for fuel cell manufacturing and use.To that end the federal agency is offering a total of $74 million in funding, with $65 million going toward research and development, and $9 million going toward cost analysis studies. The funds are available to either academic or corporate laboratories with applications for the research and development funding due by March 3, 2011, and those for fuel cell cost analysis studies due by February 18, 2011.It's an interesting development since the DOE slashed its fuel cell vehicle research budget in 2009.Fuel cells have been given a lot of attention in connection with pilot projects involvingcars, buses, light duty trucks, and even tractors. Recent research reports have predicted that fuel cells will become more standardized over the next 10 years, and experience a surge in popularity as hydrogen fueling stations become more common. Pike Research predicted that 2.8 million fuel-cell vehicles will be on the road worldwide by 2020, due in large part to government interesting and backing.Fuel cells have also been successful in stationary applications like supplying power used to cool a data center, as chargers for gadgets, or as energy storage units for intermittent energy sources like wind and solar.DOE Secretary Steven Chu has been quite vocal with his personal skepticism toward fuel cells as a successful transportation option in the near future until certain technological breakthroughs occur. Chu has said he sees fuel cells more as an option for energy storage when it comes to nuclear power, solar, and wind."I think that hydrogen could be effectively a 'battery' in the sense that suppose you had a way of using excess electricity--let's say a nuclear plant at night, or solar or wind excess capacity, and there was an efficient electrolysis way of turning that into hydrogen, and then we have stationary fuel cells. It could effectively be a battery of sorts," Chu told MIT's Technology Review in a 2009 interview.Of course, as always with the federal government, there is a catch to this available fuel cell funding."Funding for both programs are subject to congressional appropriations," according to the DOE announcement.

0 Vote(s)

After being the hot venture capital investment category for the last few years, green tech appears to be cooling off.The National Venture Capital Association yesterday released results from a survey of venture capitalists and entrepreneurs which showed that only 38 percent thought energy investment would increase in 2011. Forty percent expect it to decline.Worries about an overinvestment, or a bubble, have subsided greatly with only 28 percent of respondents seeing clean tech as "frothy" in the year ahead.Instead, the biggest concern of overheated investment is consumer Internet, according to the survey which is done with Dow Jones VentureWire. When ranked, the consumer Internet category was the industry most venture capitalists expect to see "froth" followed by cloud computing software. Overall, the NVCA found that both investors and CEOs of companies have more confidence going into the new year. When VCs were asked which sector will fare better in 2011, information technology came out way ahead with 69 percent, followed by 19 percent for biotech, and 12 percent for clean tech. CEOs had a different view, saying clean tech would to slightly better than the other sectors. There are already signs of a contraction in venture money into the green technology area. Third quarter data from the Cleantech group found that the total venture investing was $1.6 billion in the third quarter this year, a 25 percent decrease from the previous quarter although there were more deals in total. Lower investment levels overall does not mean that VCs are moving out of green tech en masse. But it could signal a shift in how they finance their companies' growth or which areas they invest in. Energy efficiency is often considered a promising area because it doesn't require the large amounts of capital to build a solar manufacturing plant or biofuels refinery, for example. One of the big questions facing all VCs is whether they will have successful exits through an initial public offering or acquisition. Thirty four percent of the NVCA respondents thought that the number of IPOs in clean tech would increase, although few are publicly known at this point. Compared to the IT industry, investing in energy, materials and water typically requires a lot of capital to develop the technology and it can take many years for it to be adopted into the market. That has prompted many companies to change their investment strategies by diversifying their funding sources beyond just venture capital.

0 Vote(s)

A festivus for the rest of us: First, Angry Birds Christmas ornaments, and now an Angry Birds Christmas edition.(Credit:NickandChapin Channel/YouTube)Everyone's favorite finch-flinging frolic is going festive for both iOS and Android devices (just try saying that five times fast after downing a glass of egg nog). Rovio Mobile's next big update for Angry Birds, which celebrates Christmas, has been hinted at, detailed, and screenshotted, and now the company has made it official, though we don't have an exact release date yet. Angry Birds Christmas will be free if you purchased the 99-cent Angry Birds Halloween edition for iOS devices. Rovio had initially tweeted that the Christmas title would only be coming to theiPod Touch,iPhone, andiPad, but today posted a message that it's flying onto Android too. Now we're just waiting to hear if Angry Birds fans with MeeGo, WebOS, and Symbian devices will see their Yuletide cheer turn into jeer this holiday. Angry Birds has steadily been growing into a phenomenon (being No. 1 in most mobile app stores for a while can do that for you), and Rovio is riding the wave with an official Angry Birds Day scheduled for December 11. Nearly a thousand people in 65 countries have already signed up for the meetups, which Rovio is flavoring as a celebration of popping 3 trillion piggies, and the chance to meet, play, and compare scores with Angry Birds fans. I'm pretty decent at Angry Birds, and have had many three-star rounds, if I may brag for a moment. Comparing scores against others might be intimidating, though. I fear the grand master of Angry Birds in my area would probably show up and school everyone. (Credit:Rovio)

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Hewlett-Packard)Consumers still looking to buy one of Hewlett-Packard's new Slate 500 devices will have to wait awhile.Only three weeks since its debut, HP's new tablet is on back order, according to a notice on the unit's order page. The notice says the tablet is scheduled to ship in another six weeks, and a person in HP's sales department confirmed that it would be shipping on December 27. This means that people who place new orders for a Slate 500 won't be able to get one in time for the holidays.HP has attributed the delay to "extraordinary demand" for its new tablet, but that may not be the full story, at least according to one report.Citing an insider tip, Engadget says that HP reportedly only planned to manufacture 5,000 Slate 500s. When the company received orders for 9,000 units, it was forced to rehire workers to ramp up production again. Engadget further says that HP is shaving $100 off the tablet's $799 purchase price for customers now forced to wait.E-mail and a phone call to HP's press relations seeking comment were not returned. The Slate has gone through a bumpy birth. HP first teased a quick glimpse of the tablet at CES 2010 in January, which it followed up in early April with a video of the device afterApple's iPad had hit the market. But when HP acquired Palm earlier this year, reports came out that the tablet might be put on the back burner. In July, details about the Slate surfaced on HP's Web site indicating that the device was still alive and would be powered byWindows 7. Earlier rumors had suggested that the tablet might end up sporting a version of Palm's WebOS.The Slate 500 finally debuted in late October, targeted for the small and medium business (SMB) market. Running Windows 7 Professional, the tablet uses an 8.9-inch touch screen, compared with the iPad's 9.7-inch display. The Slate 500 includes an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of memory, 64GB of solid-state storage space, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and offers both front-facing and rear-facing cameras.

0 Vote(s)

Is the white iPhone 4 on its way(Credit:James Martin/CNET)An update to the Apple StoreiPhone application has given further hints that the white iPhone 4 might not be far off. This morning, the application's new "Reserve Products" feature offered users the option to reserve the 16GB and the 32GB white iPhone 4 for in-store pickup. However, when users clicked on the option, they weren't actually able to reserve the smartphone.Soon after the option was discovered, Apple removed it and placed a "not available to reserve" label on each white iPhone 4 listing. It's unknown whether the option to reserve the white iPhone 4 was a glitch or something that the company plans to offer soon, but mistakenly made available today. But it was notable nonetheless, considering the online Apple Store still lists the white iPhone 4 as "unavailable for order or in-store pickup."The white iPhone 4 is one of Apple's most anticipated products. When the black iPhone 4 went on sale in June, Apple said the white version would be made available in July. The company then pushed the white iPhone's launch back to "later this year" due to "challenges" it was facing with manufacturing. Since then, speculation has been running rampant on when the device will finally be made available. That speculation only increased earlier this month when U.K. tech blog Pocket-lint reported that it had witnessed a man at a recent press event using the white iPhone 4. That person told Pocket-lint that an Apple employee "fixed him up" with the device. He also told Pocket-lint that Apple headquarters is "swimming with white iPhones."Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment on when it plans to make the white iPhone 4 available, and whether its app update indicates the impending release of the device.(Via Engadget)

0 Vote(s)

Kik Messenger is a once in a lifetime startup success story, going from 0 to 1.5 million users in 18 days. Aside from being free, the app is available multi-platform and is insanely fast, in fact its speed is what sets it apart from competitors like What&'sApp and Ping Chat.&''It&'s like you can feel the person on the other side of the chat&'' says founder Ted Livingston. Of Kik&'s 1.5 million users about 620K are on iPhones and the rest are spread out evenly between Blackberry and Android.Hailed by its fans as a &''Blackberry Messenger for the rest of us,&'' Kik is an example of a pivotal pivot. Founded in January 2009, the service was centered around SMS until Livingston decided to relaunch the product as in-app messaging about two weeks ago.Crucial to the app&'s viral success is that it easily allows you to invite friends, with a link that goes directly to the install page. It also comes with Kik user suggestions from your contacts baked in, taking away the work of having to manually find them. It&'s almost poetic that the feature responsible its impressive stickiness would currently be the subject of contention.A recenta4sQuora thread goes into how the Kik app might be in violation of Apple&'s iOS Developer Terms of Service, as it automatically imports your contacts without asking for permission, requires users to share information in order to function and does not give users ready access to its own TOS.Here are the specific app store clauses that were brought up in reference to Kik.3.3.9 You and Your Applications may not collect user or device data without prior user consent, and then only to provide a service or function that is directly relevant to the use of the Application, or to serve advertising. You may not use analytics software in Your Application to collect and send device data to a third party.3.3.10 You must provide clear and complete information to users regarding Your collection, use and disclosure of user or device data. Furthermore, You must take appropriate steps to protect such data from unauthorized use, disclosure or access by third parties. If a user ceases to consent or affirmatively revokes consent for Your collection, use or disclosure of his or her user or device data, You must promptly cease all use.The App Store requires both an explicit &''User Permission&'' function as well as direct access to an app TOS, neither of which Kik has. The app also comes under some GetSatisfaction fire for similar multi-platform privacy holes and the fact that there&'s no opt out for it messaging your contacts when you join. When asked about these issues, Livingston, who commented both on the Quora and GetSatisfication threads, said that a fix (like a popup asking users for permission to share their information) was in the works, asap.Livingston, who is concerned about user privacy, was baffled as to why the app had been accepted into the App Store four times without contest if it in fact was in violation of Apple&'s TOS, which it looks to be.a4s&''It was re-approved by Apple two days ago,&'' he said, which is days after the first TOS issues were brought up. I am similarly confused, especially since app has been one of the top downloaded free apps in the App Store since it&'s relaunch.Livingston joked, &''Maybe Apple is letting it slide as a way to crack BlackBerry Messenger&'s hold on the market&''Apple has not responded to my requests for more information.
This is the second in a series of posts on traceability. Written by Springwise, and supported by IBM. Check out our previous post, or read more about building a smarter planet._________From bananas and spinach to coffee and chocolate, we''ve covered a variety of food tracking concepts that were mainly focused on the ''softer'' side of traceability, giving consumers a sense of connection to the sources of their food and the people who grow it. While those individual efforts are immensely valuable as marketing and information tools, both producers and consumers stand to benefit from a more widely accepted and recognized method of tracking food.A recent example of an integrated approach to fresh food traceability is HarvestMark''s partnership with The Kroger Company (2,468 supermarkets in 31 states). Kroger''s private label produce brands now feature sixteen-digit codes by HarvestMark, allowing consumers to find out where their food was grown, when it was packed, how it should be stored, etc.HarvestMark a4" a Redwood City-based provider of food tracking solutions a4" offers a free iPhone app that lets shoppers access information straight from the store, using their phone''s camera to scan a product''s barcode. Alternatively, they can access the information from the company''s homepage. And in the event of a product recall, consumers can quickly check whether the food in their fridge is affected. Kroger is the first retailer to offer HarvestMark on its private label brands. For food producers and packagers, heightened concerns about product recalls (and accompanying legislation) mean that the race is on to find a traceability standard. Not in the least because dealing with multiple systems is confusing, wasteful and inefficient. Add to that consumer interest in food provenance, and it''s no surprise that this market is ripe with opportunity, especially for front-runners who can appeal to the needs of all parties involved: producers, packagers, retailers and consumers.
Apple dominates the global market for tablet computers more than seven months after it launched its game-changing iPad device.About 95 percent of all tablet computers shipped in the third quarter were iPads, according to a study by Strategy Analytics. The Boston market research firm said that tablet computer shipments were up 26 percent from the previous quarter.Google&'s Android operating system accounted for just 2 percent of tablets. That percentage is expected to rise in the current quarter as more models such as Samsung&'s Galaxy tab are launched, the study said.Apple is in a race to ship as many iPad touchscreen devices as it can while competitors try to catch up. Hewlett-Packard launched a Windows 7-based tablet computer this month and hopes to ship a Palm-based tablet in early 2011. Viewsonic, Research in Motion and others have also announced plans for tablet devices. Gartner estimates that touchscreen tablets will triple to nearly 54.8 million units sold in 2011.The high demand for tablets is hurting interest in netbooks. ChangeWave Research said its survey showed that only 14 percent of respondents say their next portable device purchase will be a netbook, down from 24 percent in June. But 26 percent plan on buying a tablet. Of those, 80 percent are likely to buy an iPad.Next Story: Build it and they&'ll unplug How to get people to use energy-saving products Previous Story: Oracle looks to ecommerce with $1B ATG buyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPadCompanies: Apple, Hewlett Packard, Samsung Tags: iPadCompanies: Apple, Hewlett Packard, SamsungDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Herea4a4s the latest action wea4a4re following on the GreenBeat:MiaSol accused of patent infringement &8212' The solar startup has been served a patent infringement lawsuit by solar technology company Solannex. The suit alleges that MiaSollifted aspects of Solannex&'s patented solar array interconnection structure technology after initial meetings in which Solannex&'s founder demonstrated and provided samples of the technology. MiaSol makes thin-film copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) modules.Nissan shows off Esflow electric sports car &8212' The company plans to debut the car at the International Motorshow in Geneva next month. The model is a two-seat all-electric sports car that can go 150 miles on a full battery charge and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. The Esflow, pictured, has two motors that propel each of its real wheels.Electric cars could attract rodents &8212' While plugged into to recharge, electric car battery packs could become a magnet for nesting rodents seeking warmth, Green Car Reports writes. One automotive writer has already reported a rat causing $600 of damage by chewing through part of the wiring harness in his Chevrolet Volt test car. Since rats are considered an act of nature, the damage wasn&'t covered by the Volt&'s warranty.Salazar calls for more renewables support from Congress &8212' Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazarcredited new permitting and financial incentives with success in boosting renewable projects but called for more support from Congress to ensure future development, Greenwire reports. As an example of the need to create more stable renewables policy, Salazar spoke of last year&'s grant program largely benefitting solar and wind projects that nearly expired but were extended at the last minute for just one more year.Next Story: Socialize this: Gamer social network Raptr raises $15M and gets 6M fans Previous Story: Five reasons gas guzzlers won&'t die &8211' and shouldn&'t &8211' any time soonPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cigs, electric cars, Esflow, Solar, Volt, windCompanies: Chevrolet, Miasole, Nissan, SolannexPeople: Ken Salazar Tags: cigs, electric cars, Esflow, Solar, Volt, windCompanies: Chevrolet, Miasole, Nissan, SolannexPeople: Ken SalazarIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
