It's not often that I get e-mails and calls from major Yahoo shareholders that begin with "idiotic" and end with "moronic." But that's pretty much the tone of investor sentiment Friday in the wake of Yahoo's escalating dispute with its Chinese partner Alibaba Group. And that was the nice stuff."It is a sad and perplexing situation," said one major Yahoo investor, who declined to be named. "Alibaba is supposed to be a shiny jewel for Yahoo and now it is tarnished badly."Said another more flatly: "This is a crisis of leadership at Yahoo, and the board needs to do something about it."By that, the shareholder was talking about the removal of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who has had a rocky relationship with Alibaba execs, especially CEO Jack Ma.A spate of Wall Street analysts who cover Yahoo also weighed in mostly on the negative Friday. As Jordan Rohan of Stifel Nicolaus noted in part in a note about Yahoo titled "Trust Is the Key Issue":"If Yahoo knew of this transaction yet failed to disclose it, for whatever reason, investors could lose faith in other Yahoo disclosures. If Yahoo did not know about it, trust issues loom even larger, as one could conclude that other material transactions may have occurred and were not disclosed."And now, the latest kerfuffle between Yahoo and Alibaba is turning out to be a digital version of "War of the Roses," in which a divorcing couple battles to the bitter end over their house.Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz(Credit:CNET)Note to Yahoo and Alibaba: At the finale of that fabulous movie, the Roses are both crushed under a lovely chandelier. But prospects of disaster has not stopped either side from holding back on public bickering Thursday and Friday, with both companies releasing conflicting and pugnacious statements about the circumstances around the transfer of Alibaba's Alipay online payments service to a separate entity controlled by Ma.Yahoo said the transaction was made without its knowledge or board approval, claiming it was told of the move six weeks ago.A Yahoo representative reiterated that to me earlier today:"As disclosed in our statement on May 12, Yahoo! and Softbank were notified by Alibaba Group on March 31, 2011, of the two transactions that occurred without the knowledge or approval of the Alibaba Group board of directors and shareholders. Yahoo is in active and constructive negotiations with Softbank and Alibaba Group to preserve the integrity of this investment and maximize shareholder value."Alibaba--which said it had to spin off Alibaba in order to acquire a license from the People's Bank of China--begged to differ on the knowledge part at least, noting that its board was informed of the situation as far back as mid-2009.More to the point, since Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang is one of only four members of that board, which includes Ma and also SoftBank's Masa Son, Alibaba was essentially insinuating that he knew full well what was happening. The latest mess comes after a long and clearly difficult negotiating process between Yahoo and Alibaba about its relationship.Essentially, Ma wants Yahoo to sell back some of its 43 percent stake and Yahoo does not want to let go of an asset that turned out to be one of the only parts of the company investors are enthusiastic about."It's already a sad statement that investors are buying the stock for businesses that Yahoo does not control at all," said one observer. "This fight makes it even sadder."What Yahoo will do next will be critical, especially if it decides to escalate the situation with a lawsuit against Alibaba, which operates in China but is incorporated in the Cayman Islands.Sources at both Yahoo and Alibaba said Yahoo had sent some saber-rattling letters on the situation and has even explored legal action in Singapore, where Alibaba has operations. But every investor I spoke to Friday was hoping the Silicon Valley Internet giant would stop making loud public statements and drop its attacks on Alibaba in favor of negotiating a deal.Joked one: "Yahoo needs to kill all the lawyers and bring in the deal-makers."Added another: "I don't know who's in charge of messaging here, but they need to stop talking and thinking they can win this cat fight. It's not helpful and, more importantly, it's not working."No, it is not at all, having given rise to all kinds of speculation about the tenure of Bartz and the ineffectual leadership on the Yahoo board. But while several sources close to the Yahoo board said Bartz has been on thinner ice of late for a variety of reasons, it's not clear this incident is prompting any kind of ouster at this point. But that could change, depending on how Bartz fixes the clearly dysfunctional situation.Because investors I talked to agree that keeping on the course Yahoo has chosen with Alibaba is not tenable."The more Yahoo protests that it has been snookered," said one exasperated investor, "the more clueless it looks."And the more its stock suffers. Yahoo shares are down more than 11 percent in just five days, a drop that comes after the company finally had begun to see its stock on the rise. That should make the next week, all leading up to Yahoo's investor day on May 25, a very interesting one all around.Story Copyright (c) 2011 AllThingsD.
Even if the Internet is down, people in Egypt can still use Twitter through a new service from Google and Twitter.(Credit:Screenshot by Tom Krazit/CNET)Google, in combination with Twitter and its recently acquired SayNow engineers, has released a service for tweeting without an Internet connection. Designed specifically for those on the ground in Egypt unable to communicate via the Internet with the outside world, Speak to Tweet allows anyone with a voice connection to dial three international numbers and have their voice messages sent out as tweets with the egypt hash tag added to those links. "We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time," wrote Ujjwal Singh, co-founder of SayNow and AbdelKarim Mardini, product manager, Middle East & North Africa at Google, in a blog post. The numbers are +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855 and no Internet connection is required. There are already dozens of messages on the Twitter profile. The only remaining Internet service provider in Egypt, The Noor Group, was taken offline Monday, according to reports.

0 Vote(s)

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gets a boost from a recent investment in the social-networking giant.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)A new round of funding for Facebook has reportedly given the company a valuation of $50 billion. The social-networking giant raised $500 million through deals with investor Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment firm that has already invested about $500 million in Facebook, according to a New York Times report. The report notes the investments give Facebook a greater value than Web pioneers Yahoo and eBay.Facebook representatives declined to comment on the report. The investments come as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has reportedly begun scrutinizing the market for stock in hot, privately held companies such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Zynga. However, Facebook, has recently taken measures to curb second-market trading, barring current employees from selling stock. While the investment could increase pressure on the company to go public, at least one of Facebook's most high-profile investors has said that the Facebook does not plan on going public until 2012 at the earliest. The investment also comes at a time of great interest in social media sites. Daily Deals site Groupon, which reportedly spurned a recent offer from Google worth $6 billion, recently raised $500,000 toward a stated funding goal of $950,000. Twitter recently closed a $200 million investment led by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers that valued the company at $3.7 billion.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Google)Chrome is ready for corporate use, Google argued today in blogposts."Today, we're announcing that Chrome offers controls that enable IT administrators to easily configure and deploy the browser on Windows,Mac, and Linux according to their business requirements," product manager Glenn Wilson and programmer Daniel Clifford said.Of course, it'll be up to those administrators to decide whether it really is ready. But Google has added several features, most notably Windows policy template support that lets administrators control Chrome settings across an organization. And for those not satisfied with poking around help files and exercising search engines to get support, there's phone and e-mail support through Google Apps for Business, Google said.Google also announced some organizations that have installed Chrome: Vanguard, Boise State University, and Procter & Gamble. That's not much compared to the broader adoption ofFirefox and of course Internet Explorer, but it's notable.Chrome has spread to account for nearly 10 percent of browser usage worldwide, but Google would like more' Chrome fuels its ambitions to make the Web a faster, more powerful foundation for applications, and it also helps the company propagate its technology ideas.Corporate administrators are notoriously conservative. One modern-day trend, exhibited by technologies such as the iPhones and Google search, is the "consumerization of IT." And Google evidently would like some help from consumers spreading Chrome: "let your administrator know to give it a try and let us know what they think," Wilson and Clifford said.

0 Vote(s)

Mark Zuckerberg&39's profile page as viewed with Facebook&39's new profile page layout.Facebook unveiled a redesign for members' profile pages today that puts a greater emphasis on photos and sharing personal information at the top of users' pages. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previewed the new look tonight for Lesley Stahl on "60 Minutes," which runs on CBS at 7 p.m. (CNET News is published by CBS Interactive, a unit of CBS.) (However, users can get the new layout now by going to http://www.facebook.com/about/profile/ and clicking the green "Take the tour" button.)This preview video below gives an overview of what the new page is expected to look like and function. In the redesign, photos take a greater prominence, expanding in size and moving to the top of the page. The "Wall" and "Info" buttons that currently run horizontally across the top of the page have been moved to a column under the member's photo. "Message" and "Poke" buttons have appeared at the top right of the page, perhaps part of the social network's push toward "seamless messaging " across different forms of communication. In a company blog announcing the changes, Facebook engineer Josh Wiseman said the top of the new profile page will be dominated by a new introduction that will include basic information about the member, such as where they live, hometown, eduction, and marital status. A horizontal bank of recent photos in which the member is tagged anchors that introduction. The redesign also includes a "Featured Friends" tool that lets you "highlight the friends who are important to you, such as your family, best friends or teammates," Wiseman wrote. "Create new groups of friends, or feature existing friends lists." A new feature allows you to share specific projects you worked on at work or school, or musical acts or sports teams you are interested in. A new "infinite scroll" feature promises to make it faster and easier to browse photos. It allows users to locate people on Facebook by searching by name, hometown, school, or a number of other dimensions. Facebook launched a redesign in May 2008 after months of teasing users with ambiguous screenshots. In March 2009, it pushed out an unpopular facelift that seemed to have been inspired by Twitter. A relatively minor redesign in October 2009 divided the home page news feed into "top news" and a more real-time "recent activity" view.Zuckerberg's rare TV appearance is his first since the release of "The Social Network," the unauthorized film about his founding of Facebook that has been both praised by reviewers and criticized for what some say is an unduly negative portrayal of the young founder. Updated at 1:20 p.m. PT with Facebook's announcement, and at 1:45 p.m. with instructions on how to get new layout.

0 Vote(s)

AT&T is making a new foray into the health care market with a business geared toward improving patient care and trimming medical costs.Announced today, the new AT&T ForHealth unit will deliver a range of wireless, networked, and cloud-based products to doctors, hospitals, insurers, and pharmaceutical companies. The goal is to push the adoption of new technologies to the industry as the country tries to switch over to electronic and digital health care management.AT&T said it's looking to expand upon some of its current health care projects, which include medicine bottles that remind people when to take their pills, devices that can monitor a person's heart at home, and audio/video links that allow a doctor and patient to talk without the need for a more expensive office visit. The ForHealth intiative will drive a variety of services, according to AT&T. The new mHealth Services will focus on helping patients take the right medicine, get home health care, manage weight loss, and monitor wellness programs. New cloud-based image archive programs and security software will let doctors share video, images, and other medical records in a more secure way. AT&T said it will work with a variety of different customers to pilot these new services. As one specific example, AT&T Labs is working with hospitals and universities to design "smart slippers" that would monitor a patient's walk and signal doctors if the person falls or seems about to fall."We believe the health care industry is at a 'tipping point' for fundamental change that will improve patients' care and lead to better health care outcomes," John Stankey, president and CEO of AT&T Business Solutions, said in a statement. "Networking solutions, using cloud-based, mobility, and telepresence technologies, can help the overall industry deliver better care to people while driving costs out of the system."AT&T already has a strong hook into the U.S. IT health care market, bringing in around $4 billion in sales last year to hospitals, insurers, pharmaceutical companies, suppliers, and doctors.
(Credit:Apple)High satisfaction rates amongiPad owners is leading to more interest in the device, which continues to eat away at demand for Netbooks, according to a new survey from ChangeWave Research. The survey, which included the views of 3,108 consumers contacted in October about buying plans for PCs, Netbooks, and tablets, showed that 26 percent of consumers would purchase a tablet in the next 90 days.Of those tablet buyers, 80 percent said they would purchase an iPad. RIM's PlayBook, which is Apple's nearest competitor, came in at 8 percent. The Samsung Galaxy Tab (3 percent), HP Slate (2 percent), Archos tablet (1 percent), Dell Streak (1 percent), and Sony Dash (1 percent) rounded out the list.Noting Apple's dominance in the tablet market, Paul Carton, vice president of research at ChangeWave, said that "with the iPad having already set the bar so very high in terms of customer expectations, these new Tablets all have their work cut out for them in order to succeed in the race to gain new market share."ChangeWave's survey asked current iPad owners about their satisfaction with the device. The numbers showed 72 percent of owners were "very satisfied" (the highest rating), while 23 percent reported being "somewhat satisfied."Those who reported being "somewhat unsatisfied" (1 percent), "very unsatisfied" (0 percent), and "don't know" (3 percent), accounted for 4 percent of respondents. The percentage of consumers planning to purchase desktop computers (6 percent) in the next 90 days was up 1 point since the last survey in August, and those planning to buy a notebook remained at 8 percent, according to ChangeWave. The big loser Netbooks, which saw a loss in consumer interest.
Watch your fill of enriching PBS shows with the awesome (and free) PBS app for iPad.(Credit:Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET)Hey, PBS! How do you expect to make any money if you give away your appI'm kidding, of course. I love free stuff, especially when it's awesome free stuff like PBS for iPad. The new app streams full-length episodes of shows like "Antiques Roadshow," "Carrier," "NOVA," and the much-ballyhooed new "Sherlock Holmes."It also serves up "PBS NewsHour," "Austin City Limits" performances, and previews of nearly everything else in PBS' prime-time lineup. (Alas, previews are all you get of PBS Kids. If you want full-length episodes of, say, "Sesame Street" and "WordGirl," you'll have to pony up for them in the iTunes Store.)The app provides you with a schedule of current and upcoming programming from your local PBS station. There's a search option for looking up shows (make sure to look for "Masterpiece" if you want the aforementioned "Sherlock" series) and a bookmark tool for saving your favorites. The player works like every other you've used, with shuttle controls, double-tap zooming, and even a 30-second replay. And, needless to say, the content is spectacular. I started watching the new series "Circus" just so I could test playback, and found myself totally sucked in (which is why this review is appearing so late in the day).I did find one aspect of the interface confusing at first: how to actually start a video. Although you see the usual assortment of buttons like Share, Add to Favorites, and Buy, there's no independent "Play" button. Turns out you tap on the thumbnail of the video itself, much like clicking a YouTube vid to start it playing.Given the amount (and quality) of content available here, PBS could easily charge five or ten bucks for this app. Am I complaining about it being free Of course not. But I think I'll donate a little extra the next time there's a PBS fundraiser. For now, the PBS app isiPad-only, but aniPhone version is coming next month (yay!).By the way, if you like this, be sure to check out NFB Films for iPad, which streams (and even downloads) free movies from Canada's National Film Board.

0 Vote(s)

Here&39's what should be the rumored PlayStation phone.(Credit:Engadget)The tale of the not-yet-announced PlayStation phone continued today after Engadget posted photos of a Sony Ericsson slider handset sporting full gaming controls and the Android OS. Sony Ericsson has yet to confirm the existence of such a device, but the photos certainly look like the real thing. From the outside, the GSM smartphone shares only a passing resemblance to Sony Ericsson's first Andorid handset, the Xperia X10. It has the same thin menu controls below the display and black color scheme, though the ends are more rounded. Slide up the face, however, and you'll see the expansive gaming controls, which includes the standardSony PlayStation controls, plus what appears to be a touchpad in the center. Sony's shoulder controls should sit on one spine and the camera lens and flash are on the device's back side.Engadget says the PlayStation phone should have a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, a microSD card slot (goodbye Memory Stick!), and the "Gingerbread" version of Android. That's either Android 2.3 or 3.0, depending on whom you talk to.That's all we can say right now, but with the holidays fast approaching, this thing could get the official unveiling very soon. If it is true, a gaming-centric Android phone would mean a lot for the platform and for Sony Ericsson. Though plenty of Android games are available, Google's OS still hasn't attracted a gaming buzz. And for Sony Ericsson, a PlayStation phone would give a huge boost to its Android lineup after the nice, but not so amazing, Xperia X10.For more on what we want from a PlayStation phone, check out Scott Stein's 11 must-have features for a PSP phone.

0 Vote(s)

On top of the Kobo eReaders, Borders is also offering the Android-based Velocity Micro Cruz and Velocity Micro Tablet at $169.99 and $299.99, respectively. Those color e-readers may find much more difficult going should Barnes & Noble roll out the Nook Color tomorrow at $249--which it is expected to do.Editors' note: The price in the box below isn't accurate.
Shades of the 2010 MacBook Air(Credit:Sony)Though a moot point now for consumers, in 2004 Sony came out with an ultrathin wedge-shaped laptop that was a progenitor of the MacBook Air, particularly Apple's 2010 incarnation. At the Apple event this week in San Francisco, Steve Jobs said the new MacBook Air "is the future of notebooks." That's debatable of course but it's clear that PC makers like Sony and Hewlett-Packard already saw that kind of future a long time ago. The problem was that either their timing was off or they didn't execute the designs as well as Apple--or simply that the laptop was too expensive. Back in 1998, HP released the ultrathin, 3-pound Sojourn made from magnesium. (And more recently the wafer-thin Dell Adamo XPS eclipsed the older Apple Air by using a heavily wedged design.) But Sony's offering may be one of the best examples of a laptop that pretty much matches Apple's design--except Sony did it six years ago. The nickel carbon body Vaio X505--no longer available--had some very impressive specs for its time. (See 2004 review.) Similar to the MacBook Air, the pronounced wedge design was 0.38 inches at the thinnest point and 0.83 at the thickest. The nickel carbon body also squeezed in an Ethernet port, a PCMCIA slot, and a 1394 connector(Credit:CNET Reviews)Like Apple's new Air, the Vaio X505 used an ultralow voltage Intel chip: a Pentium M "ULV" 1.1GHz processor. And similar to the Air, it was 0.38 inches at it thinnest point and 0.83 inches at its thickest (and keep in mind this was remarkably thin for a design that was probably conceived in 2002). The Sony X505 was smaller than the 11.6-inch Air, packing a 10.4-inch display, but it was only 1.85 pounds. 2010 MacBook Air(Credit:Apple)And the price When the Sony Vaio X505 came out, it was about $3,000. And that's probably where Apple's new Air breaks the most ground. The ultrasvelte, 2.3-pound Air--which I would argue is the most impressive Apple MacBook design--can be had for $999. Still a bit pricey but far below the boutique, Rodeo-Drive ultrathins of the past. (Note that Apple's original high-end MBA was about $3,000 but mainstream Air models eventually settled in at about half that price.) So, what does Sony have today It has the X series, but that's a single-core Intel Atom processor-based design and won't deliver the performance of the Air, which uses a Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia graphics.

0 Vote(s)

Back in June, we covered Pay with a Tweet. Developed by German-American Innovative Thunder, Pay with a Tweet bills itself as "the first social payment system where people pay with the value of their social network." In other words, rather than paying with currency, purchasers of any kind of content tell their friends on Twitter about it instead. We had a feeling it wouldn''t be long before we came across another like-minded initiative. As if on cue, along comes SocialWhispers, a site that enables the exchange of online content for a tweet or status update on Facebook.
Wi-fi hotspot provider Boingo has filed to go public on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker a4AWIFIa4 and is looking to raise $75 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.Boingo operates around 211,000 Wi-fi hotspots around the world a4"most of which are in Asia. In fact, only around 15 percent of its active hotspots are in the United States. The company has a number of recurring payment plans that charge anywhere from $8 a month (for mobile devices) to $60 a month (for any device at an international hotspot) to access the Internet. The filing shows that companies feel like there&'s a window for IPOs right now and that the good performance of the tech industry during the recovery may be enticing to investors. The Southern California-based company sees around 10 percent of its subscribers end up quitting the service each year a4" though those are replaced by new subscriptions. The had 54,000 subscribers in 2007, but grew to about 140,000 subscribers at the end of 2009. The company had 191,000 subscribers through its most recent operating quarter, which ended in September. The companya4a4s churn rate (the rate at which old subscribers are replaced by new ones) has dropped to around 9.6 percent this year. But Boingo does seem to be at least a little vulnerable to the free Wi-fi stunts pulled by companies like Google over the holidays. One company a4"normally Google a4"typically signs up with a few airports and other locations to offer free Wi-fi access. Boingo may have had 140,000 subscribers at the end of 2009, but the company only added 7,000 subscribers in the last quarter of 2009. It added 59,000 new subscribers in the first three-quarters before that. Boingo does list companies offering free Wi-fi as a significant risk for its future success.Boingo hasna4a4t raised any money since it completed its third round of funding in 2006. It raised a whopping $65 million from New Enterprise Associates in August that year. But the company has quietly grown throughout the past several years, with its revenue up 16 percent from $56.7 million in 2008 to $65.7 million in 2009. The company brought in $20.2 million in its most recent operating quarter ending in September, up 23 percent from the same quarter in 2009.The company is also on track to be profitable for the first year in the past several years a4"it hasna4a4t lost money since June in 2009. Despite the best attempts of companies offering free Wi-fi during the holiday season, Boingo made $1.5 million off $19.8 million in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009. Its income for the most recent operating quarter ending in September was also up 237 percent to $2.1 million, from $626,000 in the same quarter in 2009.Boingo is also pitching its services to wireless providers like AT&amp'T and Verizon as a way to reduce the load on their 3G and soon-to-be 4G wireless networks. The looming roll-out of faster wireless networks and phones that act as mobile hotspots poses an obvious threat to Boingo. But then again, thata4a4s not a bad way to spin it seeing as one of the largest complaints is the load at events where a lot of people are accessing wireless networks all at once. Boingo indicated that it wants to expand its service to public events like sports events and conventions in the filing.Investors seem to be getting excited about the Internet again (a crazy notion, I know). Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank Securities, Pacific Crest Securities and William Blair &amp' Company are listed as the underwriters for the public offering.Previous Story: Peter Relan takes over as CEO of social game firm CrowdStar (exclusive)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: mobile hotspot, WiFiCompanies: Boingo, Google, paypal Tags: mobile hotspot, WiFiCompanies: Boingo, Google, paypalMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
