Tendril is trying to make the smart grid smarter about people. The company announced today the release of Energize, an application that seeks to improve energy efficiency with a simple user interface and techniques borrowed from the field of behavioral science.Grounded Power has tested out its home energy application via municipal utilities in Massachusetts. (Credit:Tendril)The product combines Tendril's software for managing home energy with tools that Tendril gained from its acquisition last year of Grounded Power, a small company with experience in smoking cessation efforts and other programs that rely on social psychology. There are dozens of companies that make dashboards to give consumers a real-time display of their energy use via the Web or a dedicated device. These dashboards are meant to help consumers save energy, but experts say that successful efficiency programs depend heavily on what information is presented to consumers and how.The Energize application seeks to get consumers actively involved by setting energy efficiency goals, measuring them, and then sharing them with others. The application can be accessed from Internet-connected devices such as smartphones or dedicated displays, or presented with paper reports. Opower is another company that has successfully used behavioral psychology, data analytics, and Web-based tools to improve utility efficiency programs. The announcement from Tendril, one of the most established smart-grid companies, was made at the DistribuTech utility conference. A number of consumer-oriented smart-grid programs are aimed at reducing peak-time power use and increasing customer efficiency.Late last week, Tendril announced a deal with Whirlpool in which the latter plans to make connected, or smart, appliances that can be managed by Tendril's Connect software.

0 Vote(s)

I want you to consider very carefully where you keep your cell phone. It seems, you see, that an Illinois man whose choice it was to keep his cell phone in his back pocket, made himself to appear something of a butthead, when a SWAT team came to call. The Chicago Tribune has no end of delight in offering that this gentleman, who surprisingly remains anonymous, made an accidental call to his wife.Or rather his bottom did, as it rolled over the phone in his back pocket and depressed the key for the last number dialed. This, so popularly called a butt-dial, usually offers garbled, echoing conversation that is not intended for the callee. This is not a good pocket for your cell phone.(Credit:CC CarbonNYC/Flickr)However, in this case, the wife thought some trouble was afoot. So she dialed the police, concerned for her husband's life--or at least, who knows, his life insurance policy. The Tribune records the words of Mark Friedman, interim co-superintendent of Winnetka Public Schools, District 36 (I'll fill in the school's role shortly): "He was listening to music and he had, I don't know, hip-hop...or music like that, where there were lyrics that were gangster-like." It seems that the husband was actually in hiscar, driving home, and perfecting his groove via the radio. His wife assumed that he was still at his office, which happens to abut the Carleton Washburne school. She thought that, perhaps, her husband had been kidnapped by, say, 50 Cent, gagged, tied to a chair and was about to have his throat turned to soup.Given the city's graceful history, police in the Chicago area always take gangsters seriously. Even if they are gangstas. So they sent a 30-man SWAT team to confront 50 Cent. At the school. One can only imagine how endearing the conversations among the police, the wife, the husband, the school, the children, and pretty much anyone in the Chicago area with a sense of humor, might have been.I fear, however, that the poor husband may now be forced to attach his cell phone to his belt at the hip. That, to me, is truly a look I would sent a SWAT team out to deal with.

0 Vote(s)

Coming soon to Panasonic Blu-ray players.(Credit:Vudu)Add Panasonic to Vudu's growing list of hardware partners. As of Wednesday, Vudu's streaming video service will be available on all of Panasonic's 2010 Blu-ray player models. It will join a panoply of other online entertainment options already available through the VieraCast menu on those players, including Netflix, Amazon Video-on-Demand, YouTube, and Pandora. Also of note: Panasonic becomes only the third vendor (besides Samsung and Vizio) to offer both Vudu and Amazon, both of which offer similar subscription-free, a la carte online video streaming services. (Vudu emphasizes the video and audio quality of its 4,000-plus HD movie titles, while Amazon offers movies and a strong slate of TV shows as well.) Vudu will be going live on the Panasonic devices the same day as it becomes available on the Sony PlayStation 3. As with thePS3, new Vudu subscribers on the compatible Panasonic devices will be offered a $5.99 credit on Vudu, giving them a free HD movie on the service. For now, VieraCast TVs and Blu-ray home theater systems will not be getting the Vudu update. We wouldn't be surprised to see it added in the future on those 2010 devices as well, but there are no guarantees. The full list of Panasonic Blu-ray players getting the Vudu upgrade is as follows: Panasonic DMP-BDT350Panasonic DMP-BDT300Panasonic DMP-BDT100Panasonic DMP-BD85Panasonic DMP-BD65PanasonicDMP-B500Related reading: CNET's quick guide to Internet TVUpdate (9:45a.m. PT): This post has been updated to reflect the fact that some Vizio products also offer both Amazon and Vudu.
Cisco&'s Umi teleconferencing camera for home living room useand the Microsoft Kinect motion controller have more in common than you might think. That&'s because Microsoft is making a play at bringing video conferencing to the living room a4" and taking on video conferencing titan Cisco a4" as part of its media package with the newest addition to its Xbox 360 video game console, the Kinect (pictured at left in use by VentureBeat&'s Dean Takahashi). The Kinect controller features a camera and a microphone array that can detect what someone is saying from pretty much anywhere in the room. The controller allows XBox 360 users to control the console with their voice alone. For example, they can say &''Xbox ESPN&'' to bring up the ESPN channel on their Xbox 360 dashboard.About 40 percent of all time spent using the Xbox 360 is spent doing activities outside of video games, said Dennis Durkin, chief operating officer of Microsoft. That can range from watching Netflix, to accessing Facebook, to using the Kinect controller to chat with friends through Xbox Live. Microsoft&'s goal with Kinect is to turn the entire Xbox 360 experience a4" not just the video games a4" into a social experience, Durkin said. He made the comments at the 18th annual Digital Entertainment conference hosted by BMO Capital Markets today. The Kinect device allows Xbox 360 owners to start video chats with other Kinect users, as well as voice chats with Windows Live users.Cisco&'s Umi telepresence, in comparison, can make calls to other Umi users as well as any other computer with a webcam. Umi also has a few other bells and whistles, such as the ability to leave voicemail messages and greetings. The camera is also more powerful, and lets users stream their video conferences at higher resolutions.Cisco has been a huge name in enterprise video-conferencing technology and has also won itself a presence in the home networking market with its wireless routers, a market it entered by acquiring Linksys in 2003 and expanded by acquiring set-top maker Scientific Atlanta in 2005. The enterprise gianta4a4s push into the consumer space just goes to show how large the consumer market is.But Kinect, which launched last week, has the jump on Umi. Cisco&'s home teleconferencing device launches next week at Best Buy stores and costs a whopping $600. Umi users also have to pay an additional $25 a month to use the teleconferencing service. Kinect costs only $150 and already ties into the Xbox Live service. Microsoft is making one thing clear a4" there&'s only room for one ominous-looking camera device on top of living room televisions.Next Story: Comcasta4a4s Tunerfish social TV app gets a new face Previous Story: Money for nothing: Free apps pay off for 1 out of 3 top iPhone developersPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Cisco Umi, home telepresence, Kinect, Microsoft Kinect, teleconferencing, UmiCompanies: Cisco, Microsoft Tags: Cisco Umi, home telepresence, Kinect, Microsoft Kinect, teleconferencing, UmiCompanies: Cisco, MicrosoftVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.

Mozilla has just published their annual &''The State of Mozilla&'' report. They do this once they&'ve filed their audited financial statements for the previous year, so these numbers are for 2009. Still, they&'re impressive numbers given how much competition their is in the market a4" particularly from their biggest benefactor: Google. For 2009, Mozilla reported revenues of $104 million. That was up 34 percent from 2008 when revenues were $78 million. Notably, that revenue number includes a $104,000 loss from long-term investments, but that&'s a huge improvement from 2008 when the same loss was $7.8 million. So where does Mozilla make most of this money from Firefox, of course, thanks largely to their search deal with Google. In the FAQ section of the report, Mozilla addresses this:The majority of Mozilla&'s revenue is generated from search functionality included in our Firefox product through all major search partners including Google, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon, Ebay and others. Mozilla&'s reported revenue also include very important individual and corporate donations and grants as well as other forms of income from our investable assets. While they list a few companies, Google is clearly the key here as further down, they address both their relationship and their contract with the search giant specifically:We have had a productive relationship with Google since 2004 and that relationship remains healthy. To date, we have renewed our contract three times, in 2005, 2006 and 2008. The current version extends through 2011. We believe that search providers will remain a solid generator of revenue for Mozilla for the foreseeable future. The relationship between Google and Mozilla is an interesting one because Google has its own browser, Chrome, that competes with Firefox. And by all measurements, Chrome continues to gain market share at a rapid pace. While it still looks as if most of the share they&'re taking is from industry leader Internet Explorer, Firefox&'s growth has slowed down significantly since Chrome started to take off.In the &''Competitive World&'' section of their report, Mozilla dives into why they believe Firefox 4 is going to take the browser to the next level. The latest version is in late-stage beta testing and should be out shortly. Here, they also rattle off some big numbers for Firefox, such as more than 400 million total users, over 140 million active daily users, and 800,000 Firefox 4 beta testers.Going forward, Mozilla outlines how they&'re putting an emphasis on mobile, apps, sharing and syncing, their Drumbeat project (promoting the open web).CrunchBase InformationMozillaFirefoxGoogleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Seagate showed off its thinnest portable hard drive yet at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. It shows that the race for smaller, faster, better is never over when it comes to new tech products. The Scotts Valley, Calif.-based storage company said its newest 2.5-inch diameter GoFlex external hard drive is a razor-thin 9 millimeters thick, about 38 percent slimmer than the company&'s current ultra-portable drives. Although people are putting more and more critical data on their computers &8212' from family videos to work documents &8212' only about 15 percent back up their data. If this can help get more people to do backups because it&'s more convenient, that&'s great. The new drive is aimed at entry-level laptops and netbooks. It represents the company&'s best attempt to stay competitive with flash memory chips, which are used in SSD drives for laptops. This drive will be available this spring with a capacity of 320 gigabytes. It has a universal serial bus (USB) 3.0 interface to transfer data at speeds 10 times faster than USB 2.0. The small size will allow Seagate to sell cool-looking yet functional external hard drives for people who want to live a &''mobile lifestyle.&'' Pricing isn&'t available yet.Seagate also announced a new line of GoFlex portable external drives for Mac computers. The drives cost $249 for 1.5 terabytes, $199 for 1 terabyte, $179 for 750 gigabytes and $149 for 500 gigabytes. Seagate also announced that it will certify third-party vendors to make slots on their products that can house removable hard drive cartridges from Seagate.Previous Story: Asus goes tablet crazy at CES: Launches Android-powered Eee Pad Slider, Transformer and morePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CES, GoFlexCompanies: Seagate Tags: CES, GoFlexCompanies: SeagateDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
