(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)Headphones aimed at the fashionable consumer are not in short supply these days, but one would think the last place people are concerned about gadget style would be the gym. However, plenty of manufacturers are banking on the belief that you want good-looking tech no matter how sweaty you are, hence the Powerbeats by Dr. Dre Sport Headphones from Monster. These $150 earphones offer a secure fit, integratediPhone controls, and a sleek look--but they're also pricey for workout headphones, and they don't seem particularly durable or sweat-resistant.Read the full Powerbeats by Dr. Dre Sport Headphones review and get a closer look in our gallery.

0 Vote(s)

General Motors said today it would hire 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan over the next two years to develop more electriccars and hybrids as it launched its battery-powered Chevrolet Volt."Volt clearly demonstrates that we are well on our way and it is especially true when it comes to the electrification of the automobile," GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson said at a ceremony marking the start of production of the plug-in hybrid.Chevy Volt at a press event in May.(Credit:Antuan Goodwin/CNET)The Volt, which tops the Toyota Prius for fuel economy, is a first-of-its-kind vehicle that GM has touted as a symbol of its commitment to pushing for gains in fuel efficiency and developing new technology.Akerson drove on stage in the first commercially made Volt at the ceremony to mark the start of the car's production, three years after the automaker announced the closely watched project.Akerson said GM wanted to be in the forefront of new vehicle technology--starting with the development of powerful battery packs and electric motors--that promises to reduce oil consumption. The Volt is designed to run for 35 miles on a full charge of its 400-pound lithium ion battery pack supplied by a unit of Korea's LG Chem. After that, the car is powered by a 1.4-liter engine that gives drivers an estimated 379 miles of driving range. Some critics had questioned whether the Volt would survive GM's restructuring in bankruptcy in 2009 because of its high cost and the low profit margin on the first shipments of the $41,000 car.GM North American chief Mark Reuss compared the development of the Volt to a NASA "moon shot." He said the effort, including more than $700 million in new investment, had "created the new soul of GM."GM will begin shipping the Volt in limited numbers in December. The automaker plans to expand shipments of the Volt to more markets in 2011 and will also start to export the vehicle, Akerson said. The Volt, which has won honors as Motor Trend Car of the Year and Green Car of the Year, is the first in a number of electric or partly electric cars to arrive over the next two years. The growing segment also includes the all-electric Nissan Leaf and upcoming rechargeable cars from Toyota and Ford.GM introduced a concept version of the Volt at the Detroit auto show in 2007 and started production this month at a plant that straddles Detroit and the city of Hamtramck, Mich. The automaker started development work on the vehicle that would become the Volt in 2006 at the urging of then product development chief Bob Lutz. The event to mark the start of Volt production is the first major event for GM since its record-setting $23 billion initial public offering of shares earlier this month.Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited.
AT&amp'T inadvertently confirms an upcoming Android smartphone.(Credit:Boy Genius Report)An AT&T Facebook account confirmed the existence of an upcoming Motorola handset yesterday, outing the Olympus for all to see.A Boy Genius Report reader asked the AT&T Share team whether he would be wise to wait on the Tegra-2-powered smartphone as he is eligible for an upgrade. The carrier's response, which was quickly pulled, was that the phone will be available in either December or January. Previous rumors suggested that the Olympus would arrive in early 2011, possibly in time for CES at the top of the year. I doubt that the phone will be readied by year's end, however, so expect to see it in January where it could make a bigger impact.Regardless of actual release date, it's refreshing to know that AT&T may be one of the first providers out of the gate with a next-generation Android handset. With a rumored screen size of around 4 inches and its dual cameras, the Motorola phone could easily be the carrier's top smartphone. Thus far, Motorola seems to be reserving its best Android handsets for Verizon's Droid lineup, leaving AT&T with devices like the Flipside and Flipout. And since we're on the subject, it's worth pointing out that Motorola is purported to be working on a very similar handset for Verizon. The Etna is expected to debut in February or March and is said to be 100 percent LTE compatible with Verizon's new network.

0 Vote(s)

A week ago, it was revealed that Apple executive Phil Schiller was using Twitter. Actually, he had been on the service for about two years, but he wasn&'t active, nor was he verified, so no one was sure it was him. Well, now we know it is him and all of a sudden, for whatever reason, he has decided to become an active user. And since stories like ours pushed Schiller from 800 or so followers to about 16,800, he has stepped up his game another notch: he&'s actually started answering @replies with questions pointed towards him. Perhaps this shouldn&'t be too surprising, since this is the same Schiller that took matters into his own hands in August 2009 when there was growing discontent among iPhone app developers. But he is still an executive at Apple, the notoriously secretive company. So what has Schiller revealed via Twitter Well, a lot of more personal stuff, such as his love of the NHL, Aston Martins, watches, and Boston. But he also gave a few Apple-related tidbits. Among them:His current go-to iPhone game is Rage HDThe @appleincnews account on Twitter that some people thought was an official account is not an official account@iTunes is the account to follow for Apple newsHis favorite iPhone apps include&nbsp'Maps, iTunes, MLB, Best Camera, Reeder, Flight Update, Rage, SoundHound, Navigon, NHL, and yes, TwitterHe loves his iPhone 4, iPad, and Mac equallyHe hasn&'t tried Reeder for Mac yet, but he has heard good things (we have Phil,&nbsp'it&'s great!)But much more interesting was when Schiller decided to try and help a few iPhone users with their issues. When someone suggested that iOS 4.2 was buggy and crashing their apps, Schiller wondered if their device was jailbroken &''That is the 1 cause of iOS crashes,&'' he tweeted. When the person said they hadn&'t, Schiller suggested they try AppleCare. But then he went another step and actually gave out his email address and told the person to email him if they were still have problems. That&'s awesome a4" but potentially dangerous on Twitter. And while he gave out his email address on the public service, he was declined to give out his GameCenter ID. &''Isn&'t it enough that people know my Twitter account LOL,&'' he tweeted. Finally, earlier today when someone asked why the App Store on the iPhone makes you enter your password to download new apps, Schiller responded with, &''It is for security. You wouldn&'t want any software to get installed without your explicit approval.&'' Fair enough. So, yes, Schiller is on quite the Twitter tear as of late. It&'s great to see him answering questions directed at him this way. Hopefully he keeps it up. And maybe he&'ll tempt his fellow Apple execs to get on board. Scott Forstall still has yet to say a word to his over 35,000 followers. And he still only follows Conan. Meanwhile, given Steve Jobs&' penchant for quick, blunt email responses, it seems like he would love Twitter.Yeah, I wouldn&'t count on that happening.@butterflyylost have you tried AppleCare to see if they can help you diagnose it That&039's usually the best.

0 Vote(s)

Steve Jobs took the stage today to unveil the iPad 2, the next version of its tablet computer a4"to the surprise of just about everyone, given that he recently announced he would take some time off from Apple for health reasons.Concerns about Jobsa4a4 health weighed on investors and ended up sending Applea4a4s shares down after he announced his temporary medical leave of absence in January. Apple shares fell as much as 6 percent in the following weeks before creeping back up to pre-Jobs-exit levels. But the company&'s shares were up by as much as 1.2 percent today as Jobsa4a4 appearance finally eased some of those concerns and doomsday predictions by media outlets.Jobs took his leave from the company in January after issuing a rather terse letter to the media. It wasthe third time he took a leave of absence for medical reasons. Chief operating officer Tim Cook took control of the company, while Jobs still remained Applea4a4s chief executive. Jobs first left the company in 2004, when he underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer. He had a liver transplant in 2009 and left again. Each time, Jobs said only that his leave of absence was medically related.Apple has been widely criticized because it has not laid out a distinct succession plan for when Jobs finally leaves the company for good, although the company says it has a plan in place. Shareholders werena4a4t even able to force the companya4a4s board to talk about the succession plan at Applea4a4s most recent stockholder meeting. The proposal to disclose those plans was backed by investor-advisory service Institutional Shareholder Services, but Apple said revealing those plans would help competitors and make it harder to retain executives.Applea4a4s chief executive and iconic leader took the stage to unveil the next version of the iPad, which featured mostly only incremental improvements such as a faster processor and a front-facing camera. Most of those features were expected, so the company focused on presenting some additional bells and whistles a4"like a better case that uses magnets to automatically put the iPad to sleep and wake it up once ita4a4s opened. The iPad 2 will be available next week with both a black and white bezel. It will be available on both Verizon and AT&amp'Ta4a4s wireless networks and will retail for $499 for the cheapest model.Next Story: Apple by the numbers: 100M iPhones sold, 100M iBooks downloaded, $2B to devs Previous Story: Apple confirms iPad 2 with all-new designPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iPad, iPad 2, iPhone, iPhone operating system, jobsCompanies: ApplePeople: Steve Jobs Tags: iPad, iPad 2, iPhone, iPhone operating system, jobsCompanies: ApplePeople: Steve JobsMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
