The cash keeps coming in for former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)Eric Schmidt, Google's former CEO and new executive chairman, has been handed a huge pay raise, according to a document that Google filed yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.According to the filing, Google's Leadership Development and Compensation Committee has granted Schmidt annual compensation of $1.25 million. In addition, he will be allowed to receive a "target bonus of 400 percent of his base salary." In other words, Schmidt could walk away with more than $6 million in cash compensation in a good year.Schmidt's raise is effective as of April 4, the same day he stepped down as CEO of Google and handed the reins over to company co-founder Larry Page. Schmidt, who previously took a salary of $1 per year as Google CEO and board chairman, is now the company's executive chairman.Google's decision to give Schmidt a raise is the company's latest move to heavily compensate him. Earlier this year, the search giant gave Schmidt $100 million in stock and stock options while he was still chief executive. As much compensation as Schmidt has been awarded as of late, it will do little to affect his standing as one of the richest people in the world, considering how much he already has. According to Forbes, Schmidt is worth $7 billion.

0 Vote(s)

Intuit&39's SnapTax app(Credit:Intuit)Intuit's SnapTax app for Apple'siPhone and Android-based smartphones has been downloaded 350,000 times since its launch last month, Intuit executives have told All Things Digital. All Things Digital's Ina Fried reported today that so far, it has seen more than twice as many downloads on the iPhone than on Android-based devices.SnapTax is designed for simple tax returns that include little more than a W-2 wage statement. After downloading the free app, users need only to snap a picture of their W-2 from their smartphone, and the program will automatically input that information into the user's return. The data is also encrypted to ensure it's kept secure from others. After inputting their personal information and reviewing the return, users can then file it with the Internal Revenue Service for $14.99.Actually paying that fee is somewhat difficult on an Android smartphone. Users must first download the free version of the program and then when they're ready to file, they have to dole out the $14.99 for the paid version of the app. The iPhone offering requires users to pay through an in-app payment system.Even with 350,000 downloads, there's no telling if all those people will actually file their taxes with the app. In fact, Intuit told All Things Digital that it was "surprised" that people would want to file their taxes with a smartphone, given that sensitive data is included in returns. But after performing its research, the company found that younger taxpayers aren't especially worried about that. For those with security concerns or with more sophisticated returns, hiring a tax preparer or using a software program is still the go-to way to pay Uncle Sam.

0 Vote(s)

By selecting "Play by Play" from the Featured Sites tab on Mapquest's Web site, mundane GPS directions become strategic maneuvers to help you get from kickoff to end zone. The navigation site will also release City's Best guides for travel tips and places to watch the big game. And if you're lucky enough to be using the Mapquest Play-by-Play directions to get to Cowboys Stadium, you may want to check the "avoid highways" option if you're in a rentalcar.
Osama BedierPayPal's Osama Bedier has resigned after eight years at the eBay-owned company and will take a job across town at Google. In a blog post, Scott Guilfoyle, PayPal's CTO, made the announcement and introduced the new head of the platform team, Matthew Mengerink. But the departure of Bedier to Google is a big blow to PayPal, considering that both companies are racing to build next-generation payment platforms with a strong mobile component. Bedier held the title of VP of platform and oversaw PayPal's global payments platform, including mobile. Mengerink is an internal replacement for the position, having worked at PayPal for 10 years. He previously led the PayPal architecture, infrastructure, payments development, core technologies, international development, customer quality and engineering services teams. I will update when I hear more on what Bedier will be doing at Google.Story Copyright (c) 2010 AllThingsD. All rights reserved.

0 Vote(s)

GameStop raked in record revenue during the holiday-shopping season, the retailer announced today.During a nine-week period that ended January 1, GameStop generated $3.02 billion in revenue, up 5.4 percent compared with 2009. The company saw a 100 percent revenue gain through GameStop.com, compared with the same period in 2009. The company's gift card sales in December were up 32 percent as well, it reported. The sales figures "exceeded" its expectations, the company noted. The video game retailer stopped short of announcing individual product sales, but noted that overall hardware revenue was up 7.4 percent during the holiday period, thanks in most part to Microsoft's Kinect. New software sales rose 3.3 percent year over year "driven by strong sell through" ofSony PlayStation 3 and MicrosoftXbox 360 titles, such as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The PlayStation Move, Sony's answer to theNintendo Wii Remote and the Microsoft Kinect helped lead accessories sales, while World of Warcraft: Cataclysm drove PC game sales, GameStop reported. Combined, those products helped the company's "other" category grow 15.9 percent year over year. GameStop isn't the only company that enjoyed stronger-than-expected sales during the holiday season. Yesterday, Microsoft announced at its CES 2011 keynote that it sold 8 million Kinect units in the first 60 days of availability, an impressive number considering Microsoft originally anticipated selling 5 million Kinect units through 2010.

0 Vote(s)

HTC Merge(Credit:Verizon)Verizon tipped its hand a bit last night by inadvertently outing its next Android smartphone. A 360-degree view of the HTC Merge landed on the carrier's Web site only to be abruptly pulled.AndroidCentral was quick enough to see the phone and capture a video of the device. The Merge, which once carried the nickname of Lexikon, should be Verizon's first sliding QWERTY world phone. Specifications include Android 2.2, an 800MHz processor, and a 3.7-inch touch screen.Incidentally, AndroidCentral was able to get its hands on the Merge and do a full review back in early October. One of its findings was that the phone carries Bing as the default search engine, something that might put off a few interested buyers.Rumors predicted that Verizon was ready to announce the phone, possibly as early as November 18, though we're already beyond that date. Recently, the Merge appeared in Best Buy's inventory system leading many to believe a formal press release is around the corner. Indeed, with Black Friday and the holiday shopping season fast approaching, Verizon will want to start advertising this soon.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)The bigApple iPhone news this week involved a new app approved in the iTunes App Store called Skyfire Web Browser (link will open iTunes). This new Web browser's claim to fame is that it can display Flash content by using an interesting workaround. The browser sends Flash content to its own server, converts it to HTML5, then streams the content back to your iPhone. Jessica Dolcourt wrote about Skyfire's shaky launch here.Apparently, within 5 hours, Skyfire's servers were overloaded (imagine that!) as people swarmed to a new way to view Flash on the iPhone. To be honest, I haven't run into many problems with not having Flash, but I definitely hope that Apple and Adobe or someone can come to an agreement so any smartphone user can get ALL the Web content available. As of right now, Skyfire is still available at the iTunes App Store, but I have to wonder how it could not know there would be an onslaught of traffic and prepare accordingly. It also makes me wonder if it's really worth the trouble. What do you think Are you content waiting for developers to convert everything to HTML5 (if that's even possible) Should Apple just throw caution to the wind and make it so Flash works (and open the platform to those alleged dangers) Let me know in the comments! This week, get cooking with chefs from the Food Network and play a fun arcade baseball game.Once you find a recipe, use the top buttons to see a list of ingredients and how to cook the dish.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)In The Kitchen ($1.99) gives you a recipe database made up of delicious recipes from all your favorite chefs from the Food Network. The interface offers a number of ways to find a good recipe, either by using a search tool or by touching the image of a chef from the Food Network.Browse through thousands of recipes from popular chefs including Bobby Flay, Alton Brown, Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, and Rachael Ray, and get reviews for recipes from other users. Once you decide on a dish to make, you can have In The Kitchen create a shopping list for you so you can check off ingredients as you walk around the store. The shopping list is particularly helpful because you can add just the items you need or all the items from multiple dishes. Even if you don't want to make a particular recipe today, you can store favorites in a Recipe Box so you can get back to them later.Along with tons of recipes from your favorite Food Network chefs, handy tools for shopping, and a Recipe Box for your favorites, In The Kitchen offers timers so you don't even need to set a separate one. With all these features and the addition of special seasonal recipe collections, anyone who wants to add to his or her cooking repertoire should definitely download this app.You&39'll need to use your all stars (pitchers mound) to get out of difficult game time situations.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Baseball Superstars 2011 ($4.99) lets you play a cartoony, but surprisingly deep version of America's favorite pastime on your iPhone. You can choose from 10 teams initially with varying skills (some have better batting, whereas others might offer faster runners, for example) and play a standard baseball game. The graphics are more cartoonlike than realistic, and you won't be able to choose your favorite team (Baseball Superstars is not licensed by MLB), but you'll quickly forget your team is "The Dolphins" once you start playing in an exhibition game, home run hitting derby, or even a 45-game season.Baseball Superstars 2011 offers plenty of depth and replay value by allowing you to customize a batter or a pitcher with items you can buy in-game. You also have special pitches and a super-hitting button with special players you can unlock as you play. Though you don't have full control like you would in a console baseball game, Baseball Superstars 2011 manages to use the iPhone touch screen very well. Fielding the ball is done automatically, but you have full control over the type of pitches you throw and ball placement.Even though Baseball Superstars 2011 is not a realistic-looking baseball game, and doesn't come with our favorite players and teams from the pros, this title will still appeal to baseball fans offering some RPG elements and plenty of extras to keep the game interesting. My only question is, why did they release this game after the World Series was over (go Giants!)What's your favorite iPhone app Are you excited that you finally have the recipes from Food Network favorites on your iPhone What do you think of the arcadelike but surprisingly deep gameplay in Baseball Superstars 2011 Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

Today, BoomTown interviewed AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, along with NPR CEO Vivian Schiller, at the Online News Association Conference in Washington, D.C., about the future of journalism on the Web. Afterward, I talked to him about the future of content on AOL, most particularly its new home page revamp that focuses intently on editorial "curation," rather than a more social direction being taken by rival Yahoo. I also got a short demo of the new home page, which is rolling out right now, instead of Monday as has been reported. The new version-with a clean and spare design and a rotating logo-prominently features local news, video and content from AOL's network of sites, such as Engadget. It also launches three original video shows: A morning promotional feature called "You've Got"' a two-minute news program called "Daybreak," with former "Wallstrip" host Lindsay Campbell--yay!--and produced by Ben Silverman's Electus' and "The One," an expert/opinion segment, done by Next New Networks. The redo is yet another splashy move by AOL and Armstrong to push the company into a new direction of growth as its core access business declines. It's one wrapped almost completely around content, in hopes that creating premium branded content will attract lucrative advertising. So far, not so good, as AOL's ad revenues continue to lag in the midst of a difficult turnaround effort.Presumably, Armstrong hopes a new look will help goose results in a better direction. Here is a screenshot of the page, which is now available to users: Story Copyright (c) 2010 AllThingsD.
Xbox 360 players spend 1 billion hours each month usingXbox Live, Microsoft revealed today.Microsoft currently has over 25 million Xbox Live members worldwide. And according to the company, those folks are averaging over 40 hours of use each month. Although that figure also includes playing games on the service, the tech giant said that 42 percent of its Xbox Live Gold members watch one hour of television or movies per day on Xbox Live.Over the past year, the amount of time people spend watching television and movies on the service has increased by 157 percent, Microsoft said. All told, over 18 million people have either used Facebook, accessed Twitter, watched content on Xbox Live, or accessed one of the other entertainment services offered. At its peak, Xbox Live has been used by 2.4 million people at the same time.It has been an awfully good year for Microsoft's Xbox. In January, Nielsen reported that the Xbox 360 is the most-used game console on the market, taking up 23.1 percent of gaming time. ThePlayStation 2 and theNintendo Wii followed Microsoft's console with 20.4 percent and 19 percent of gaming time, respectively. Sony's PlayStation 3 console failed to make the top-three list. In addition, NPD reported earlier this month that Xbox 360 sales are up 34 percent compared to 2009.

0 Vote(s)

Most Giants fans won't get beyond the outside of AT&T Park during the World Series games. Tickets for game one are selling for an average of $800.SAN FRANCISCO--Like a lot of people who live in or near the city by the bay right now, I'm trying to figure out the answer to a really tough question: how in the heck can I get a World Series ticketThe answer, of course, is not pretty: you must have money, and lots of it. And since I don't really have any, and wouldn't really be willing to fork over hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a single ducat anyway, I'm having to face facts: I likely won't be getting to see the World Series in person.Last week, I thought I had the perfect idea: Since my new official Road Trip at Home page was about to launch, I would make the case to Major League Baseball that it would be a good idea to give me a press credential for the series--which starts tonight, by the way, between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers--because my ongoing project is all about highlighting local flavor that has national significance. When the World Series comes to town, as it has for the first time since 2002, it seems exactly like something I should be writing about as part of Road Trip at Home. The hours before the World Series (photos) Alas, as I discovered, Major League Baseball expected everyone who was going to cover the series to know they were doing so well before the teams that would be playing for the crown were even selected. I was told during the National League Championship Series--when it began to look like the Giants might actually beat the Philadelphia Phillies and advance to the Fall Classic--that the deadline had already passed for credentials. That was a problem, but I thought I had an ace in the hole: I know an executive who works for the Giants, and I thought maybe he could help. I asked him, and he offered to try--but then the word came back that Major League Baseball wasn't granting any exceptions. So, no credentials for me. But let's be honest: That might have been a good thing. After all, if I learned one thing while covering the World Series for a major national newsweekly in 2002--which, by the way, was the same week as my wedding--it's that cheering is not allowed in the press box. And I'm not sure I could have forced myself to hold back my enthusiasm for the Giants this time either as they fought for what would be the first World Series title in San Francisco's history--much as it was in 2002, against the Anaheim Angels. So it looks like I'll be watching the game on TV. San Francisco appears to be negotiating to host watching parties on giant screens near City Hall--so I may have to get my fix of being around thousands of fans that way. For the time being, I thought it would be fun to walk down to the ballpark and check out the scene a few hours before game one. (Click through the resulting slideshow also promoted above.) There were hundreds of people there already, and I'm guessing a lot of them don't have tickets either. They, like me, just wanted to take in the atmosphere. But I'm always holding out hope that some way, somehow, a ticket might fall into my lap. If you've got an extra one, and I know you don't, let me know.

0 Vote(s)

The holiday shopping season is about to start, and group-buying startup Groupon is hoping to get in on the action &8212' not just by offering special deals, but by creating its own holiday, Grouponicus. It&'s another offbeat promotional campaign from a company that prides itself on smart, tongue-in-cheek writing. And compared to the last one I heard about, the Grouspawn dating site (where the company offered college scholarships to the children of couples who use a Groupon for their first date), Grouponicus sounds downright serious and practical.Basically, it&'s a separate site and email newsletter that highlight special holiday deals that Groupon users can purchase for their friends. Leveraging Groupon&'s group-buying capabilities, Grouponicus offers things like classy meals, stylish clothing, and even helicopter rides for 50 percent off.The Groupon site already allows users to buy deals for a friend, but Grouponicus is structured differently. Instead of showing one deal per day, it will offer three to four deals at a time, and each will be available for three to five days. The holiday deals will be available starting on November 22 in Groupon&'s top 20 markets (including New York and San Francisco), and there will be 650 deals in all.To flesh out its fake holiday, Groupon has also created a mascot &8212' Groupo the Bargain Bird. Here&'s a relevant excerpt from the site&'s frequently asked questions:Who is Groupo The Bargain BirdGroupo The Bargain Bird is the dapper, snake-tailed Grouponicus holiday mascot that kids love! It is easy enough to find &8212' just look in the heart of every singing child, the faces of every elderly couple baking snow pies, and in the concrete-filled vault 26 miles beneath the Library of Congress, where the original copy is still faintly glowing.I want to welcome Groupoa4z into my home, but my children are afraid of him.Yes.
Mobile TV chip maker Telegent Systems is announcing today that it has shipped more than 100 million chips that enable cell phones to display analog TV.That&'s a pretty big milestone for a technology that many thought would be outdated because of the demand for digital TV and video streaming on phones. But the market for analog TV on cell phones has taken off in emerging markets around the world. What&'s interesting about Telegent&'s chips is that they are making a big difference in the lives of those who use them. That&'s perhaps a greater impact than many expensive technologies that are designed for use by the digerati. The Telegent chips are pretty cheap and enable users to watch broadcast TV for free on their phones. For many people in poorer areas, the phones become the only way that they can access TV programming. In developed countries, users watch TV while on the run or during commutes.Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Telegent was the fastest-growing private company in Silicon Valley from 2007 to 2009, with 38,491 percent revenue growth. The company filed to go public earlier this year but decided to cancel the initial public offering in May, thanks in part to stock market jitters related to the slowdown in Europe. In June, Telegent hired Ford Tamer as its chief executive, replacing co-founder Samuel Sheng. About that time, Telegent was still saying that it had sold just 80 million chips. So it sold 20 million more chips in a fairly short time. I guess we should never underestimate the power of shows such as Wheel of Fortune in getting technology adopted around the world.Tamer believes that the market for analog mobile TV will continue to grow in 2011 as more phone makers put the capability in their phones. He also thinks that interactive services will be integrated with mobile TV viewing, opening up new revenue opportunities for operators, broadcasters and service providers. He also thinks that Telegent has a shot at becoming a multibillion-dollar revenue company. This month, Telegent is making prototype chips available for hybrid digital and analog TV receivers, targeting users in Latin America. The company is also trying to make its chips smaller, consume less power, and display better imagery. Will Strauss, analyst at market researcher Forward Concepts, estimates that 198 million mobile TV chips will chip in 2014.The company expects demand for mobile TV to continue to grow with events such as the broadcast of the Cricket World Cup in Asia and the launch of low-cost ISDB-T phones, for mobile digital TV, in Latin America. Telegent&'s customers range from Samsung to ZTE' more than 100 companies have designed phones with Telegent&'s chips in them. The company was founded in 2004 and has 200 employees. Rivals, mainly focused on mobile digital TV chips, include Siano and DiBcom. Over the years, Telegent has raised more than $50 million fromNew Enterprise Associates, Walden International, Index Ventures, and Northern Light Venture Capital.Next Story: Men want Android, women want iPhones Previous Story: Deals &038' More: Heartland Robotics gets $20M to build robots, RingRevenue brings in $4M for call performance marketingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: analog TV, mobile TVCompanies: Dibcom, Siano, Telegent SystemsPeople: Ford Tamer, Samuel Sheng Tags: analog TV, mobile TVCompanies: Dibcom, Siano, Telegent SystemsPeople: Ford Tamer, Samuel ShengDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
The 2011 Fisker Karma is still on track to reach U.S. dealers in March or April, according to the company. But there&'s one new piece of info: The price of the extended-range electric sports sedan has gone up. Again.Originally announced in 2008 at a price of $80,000, the Karma fairly quickly went up to $87,900 and stayed there. Now, just before launch, &8216'final pricing&' has risen another $8,000.Based on an e-mail forwarded to us last night and originally sent by Fisker of Santa Monica, the final pricing for the 2011 Fisker Karma is:There&'s also a mandatory destination charge of $950 on top of those prices.Karmas are eligible for a $7,500 federal income-tax credit as well as a variety of state and local incentives. In California, the car qualifies for a $5,000 purchase rebate on top of the Federal allowance.Options for the 2011 Fisker Karma run as follows:The Fisker Karma order guide shows all the available colors, as well as various other choices for future owners to make.According to the dealer&'s e-mail, test drives will be available in late February or early March.Fisker exhibited its prototype Karma at each of its dealers in a lengthy U.S. national tour last summer. The company hasn&'t released final specifications, but the 2011 Karma is expected to travel 50 miles using only electricity from the battery. After its lithium-ion battery pack is depleted, a range-extending 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder GM Ecotec engine switches on.The engine turns a generator that produces electricity to operate the drive motors for a further 250 miles of range. The rear wheels are powered by a pair of 150-kilowatt electric motors. Fisker has quoted a 0-to-62-mph time of less than 6 seconds, and a maximum speed of more than 125 miles per hour.Written by John Voelcker, this article originally appeared on GreenCarReports.com, one of VentureBeat&'s editorial partners.Next Story: Google lets users bill Android app purchases to their AT&038'T accounts Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Another BrightSource IPO rumor, Tessera scrambles for solar moneyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: electric cars, electric vehicles, Fisker Karma, KarmaCompanies: Fisker Tags: electric cars, electric vehicles, Fisker Karma, KarmaCompanies: FiskerVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
Square, the mobile payments startup founded by Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, announced today that it has raised $27.5 million in a round led by Sequoia Capital. The Wall Street Journal reported that the funding valued the San Francisco startup at $240 million, which I confirmed with chief operating officer Keith Rabois.TechCrunch previously reported that Square was closing a round from Sequoia at a $200 million valuation.Becoming a truly mass-market company will be a4Aa big challenge,a4 Rabois acknowledged, but he pointed out that Square is already achieving impressive growth without paying for traditional advertising or other promotions. He said Square is processing millions of dollars in transactions every week, and that ita4a4s signing up 30,000 to 50,000 new merchants every month. Rabois said many of those merchants were previously cash-only, but they were attracted by Squarea4a4s ease-of-use (the card-reading device plugs into iPhones, iPads, and Android phones) and low financial risk (Square takes a small percentage of each payment, but the device is free, there are no upfront costs, and no long-term commitments) to start taking credit card payments for the first time.Beyond the extra cash and impressive valuation, the funding also creates another connection between Square and the group of original PayPal executives who are known as the PayPal Mafia. Rabois joined Square from social startup Slide (which was itself led by PayPal co-founder Max Lecvhin), and he previously held executive roles at PayPal. Now Sequoia Capital partner Roelof Botha, who was PayPala4a4s chief financial officer, is joining Squarea4a4s board of directors. (Sequoia reportedly beat out Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp' Byers and Benchmark Capital to lead the deal.)Bringing those connections to Square seems particularly important, given the company ambitious plans for upending the payments industry. (Building out the financial infrastructure has already caused the company some delays.) Rabois compared the complications involved in building a service that works with existing financial institutions and regulations to building a spaceship.Rabois acknowledged that he and Boetha are connected through PayPal, but he also said that Sequoia has a long history of investing in financial service companies. Sequoia&'s partners are also a4Aproduct and design connoisseursa4, he said, which makes them a good fit for Squarea4a4s goal of making payments seem a4Amagicala4.Khosla Ventures, which led Square&'s $10 million first round of financing, also invested in the new round.Next Story: Cisco security exec cheers on Android&'s security flaws Previous Story: In an industry sea change, Intel to pay Nvidia $1.5B in patent license agreementPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: mobile paymentsCompanies: Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, SquarePeople: Jack Dorsey, Keith Rabois, Roelof Botha Tags: mobile paymentsCompanies: Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, SquarePeople: Jack Dorsey, Keith Rabois, Roelof BothaAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
People say that I never say anything bad about the iPhone. Here&'s something: its notification system is awful. In particular, I&'m talking about the way notifications are managed. They aren&'t. Any Push Notification that comes in overrides another one. Apps can get badged with updates, but you&'ll have no idea what&'s new. That&'s why Boxcar is a vital app. We&'ve written about Boxcar a number of times over the past year or so. They&'re now launching version 4.0 of the app, and it&'s by far the best yet. The entire app has been overhauled from the ground up. The result is a killer management system for Push Notifications. Apple needs to buy this company. While previous versions of the app gave you a time-ordered stream of your notifications, it was somewhat daunting to look at. And you couldn&'t do much from in the app itself. The new design makes everything much easier to manage and more visually appealing. For example, notifications from Twitter now show up complete with the user&'s profile picture. And you can retweet or reply to any of those message right from within Boxcar. The app itself has taken a design cue from the excellent Facebook iPhone app and features a home screen with nice looking big buttons for each service you have activated. There is also now Retina Display support if you have the iPhone 4. All of this works on the iPod touch and iPad as well. And 4.0 brings Support for a host of new services. Google Buzz, Google Voice, Github, App Recommendations, and a few others are all now included and can be installed with a few easy steps. These App Recommendations are done by Boxcar themselves.Boxcar is now a team of 5 people based in New York City. To date, they&'ve delivered over 500 million notifications to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads.Boxcar is a free download in the App Store (though it&'s $4.99 if you wish to disable in-app advertising). You can find it here. Version 4.0 should be live shortly. CrunchBase InformationBoxcarInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

From the launch of Apple&'s iAds to Google&'s acquisition of AdMob a year ago, it&'s pretty clear that the next frontier of advertising is mobile. And today, another mobile advertising company calleda4sRhythm NewMedia has landed a big new round of funding. The ad network is announcing that it&'s raised a $10 million Series C round led by QuestMark Partners, with participation from existing investors LightSpeed Venture Partners, Morgenthaler Ventures, and Rembrandt Venture Partners. You may not have heard of Rhythm NewMedia, but the company has some major clients a4"a4sin fact, it only works with top brands both on the advertising and publishing side of things, and has worked with over 100 Fortune 500 companies this year. Publishers include CBS and Fox' advertisers include Best Buy and FedEx, and Rhythm NewMedia CEO Ujjal Kohli says that the company doesn&'t deal with longtail content at all. Most of Rhythm&'s business revolves around its video ad network, which is responsible for most of the pre-roll interactive video ads that you see on iOS and Android applications. So what does that mean Oftentimes video-centric applications from major publishers, like the TV networks for example, feature brief-pre roll ads in front of video content. The ads served by Rhythm are interactive in the sense that users can tap on something during this pre-roll ad to visit another website, or view a longer video clip (like a movie trailer). Kohli says that, like Apple&'s iAds, all of these interactive video ads keep users within the app they&'re using, which means they&'re one tap away from getting back to the content they were viewing originally. In addition to its video ads, Rhythm is also responsible for some web ads, including some of the full-page ads you see in photo slideshows on large publisher sites.Rhythm says that its mobile video ad network was averaging 425 million impressions a month in the third quarter, which was a 30% jump from Q2.a4sThe company has been around since 2005 and has raised a whopping $37 million since then, including this new round. Obviously mobile video ads weren&'t nearly as promising back when Rhythm first started as they are now a4" Kohli says that the company was a4s&''a bit early&'', but that things have taken off since the launch of the iPhone.CrunchBase InformationRhythm NewMediaInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Kiva has appeared on our pages numerous times over the years, but we can''t resist sharing news that brought the microloan platform to our attention once more. Just last week, Visa announced that it is donating USD 1 million toward Kiva''s loans to U.S. small businesses. The Kiva-Visa partnership will focus on expanding Kiva''s existing model to better serve small businesses within the United States. Specific initiatives that will result include a collaborative effort to drive awareness and understanding of microfinance for small businesses, building Kiva''s microlending platform to increase capacity to support U.S. small businesses, as well as a joint study to address gaps in research in the marketplace. William Sheedy, Visa group executive for the Americas, explains: "This partnership advances a shared mission of both Visa and Kiva: helping small businesses grow and ultimately create jobs. For many small business owners, a microloan can have an immediate impact and be a critical catalyst for their long-term success." Visa''s donation coincides with a major Kiva expansion in the Gulf Coast through the addition of ACCION Texas-Louisiana, the largest microfinance institution in the country, to the Kiva Field Partners network.Perhaps best-known for its microlending efforts overseas, Kiva has already facilitated more than USD 1 million in loans within the United States. Visa, meanwhile, is no stranger to the role of brand butler for consumers, and this continues that strategy on the SMB side. Either way, a new source to tap when your small business needs an injection of funds...
Location-based services are currently in a race to lock up the biggest brands and retailers they can. Earlier this month Facebook ran a major promotion with the Gap' Chipotle is also using the platform to offer buy-one-get-one-free deals. This morning, Fast Company reported that Foursquare has forged a deal with Pepsico. And today SCVNGR is announcing that it&'s scored a partnership with arguably the biggest brand of all: Coca-Cola.SCVNGR CEO Seth Priebatsch says that the company has been gunning to land Coke for some time (and that its competitors have as well). The campaign will take the form of custom, coke-themed SCVNGR challenges that will appear in 10 major malls across the country through the end of the year. Players who complete these challenge will be eligible for rewards like Coke bottle openers (meh) and $100,000 worth of American Express gift cards (more tempting). Players will be able to redeem these challenges at each malls&' information booth. And on Black Friday, Coke will actually have teams of people in the malls urging customers to try out the challenges.Obviously this is a big win for SCVNGR, especially if it can maintain a relationship with Coke to run more campaigns in the future. Since its rewards platform launched over the summer, Priebatsch says that SCVNGR players have redeemed some $1.5 million worth of free goods. The timing of today&'s soft-drink related announcements seems like more than a coincidence, but it&'s worth noting that Foursquare&'s deal is quite different from SCVNGR&'s. As reported in Fast Company today, Foursquare has actually partnered with Safeway/Vons to integrate with the grocery chain&'s existing rewards program a4" this helps lower the barrier to get users playing the game, because it happens automatically at check-out. Users are rewarded with different Pepsi products based on their Foursquare history. In contrast, SCVNGR probably won&'t be going the auto-checkin route any time soon, because it&'s focused primarily on offering engaging challenges rather than the check-in itself.CrunchBase InformationSCVNGRInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
