Grabbing hand: This sample was lifted from nylon after 21 days.(Credit:Scottish Police Services Authority)Scottish researchers say they're having success getting fingerprints from fabric, a feat that traditionally has been difficult for forensic sleuths. The researcher at the Scottish Police Services Authority (SPSA) and the University of Abertay, Dundee, are experimenting with gold and zinc in a technique called vacuum metal deposition, which is used to find prints on smooth surfaces such as glass and plastic. Fabrics are placed in a vacuum chamber and coated with evaporated gold as well as zinc, which binds to the gold where there are no fingerprint marks. The resulting impressions indicate where a finger or hand has touched the fabric. The researchers say they have shown the technique can be used to show a clear fingerprint on fabrics like nylon, silk, and polyester. Fabrics with a high thread count are best for getting prints, the SPSA's Paul Deacon said in a release.Donor skin dryness affects how clear fingerprints will be. Though full fingerprints are difficult to get from the fabrics, the researchers have been able to produce clear hand impressions. "An impression of a palm print on the back of someone's shirt might indicate they were pushed off a balcony, rather than jumping," Deacon said. "Fingerprints left on fabric and other surfaces can leave DNA traces, so it can also help forensic scientists to visualize the best area to target on an item of clothing to recover DNA evidence."

0 Vote(s)

Mobile e-mail is growing in popularity while the use of Web-based e-mail seems to be waning, according to a new study from ComScore.Looking back at November, ComScore found that the number of people sending e-mail via a dedicated client on a mobile device was up 36 percent from the prior November. Over the same period, the number of visitors to Web-based e-mail sites fell by 6 percent.(Credit:ComScore)Even further, those who visited Web-based e-mail sites spent less time doing so. The amount of time spent at such sites dropped 9 percent in November year over year, while the number of total pages viewed fell 15 percent. For the mobile e-mail figures, ComScore is counting people who use a dedicated e-mail client on a mobile device as well as those who just sync mail from Gmail or another online account to their phones. Those numbers also include users who access Webmail accounts from a mobile device. For the Web-based mail stats, ComScore is referring specifically to users who access Webmail through a PC."From PCs to mobile devices, whether it's e-mail, social media, IM, or texting, consumers have many ways to communicate and can do so at any time and in any place," Mark Donovan, ComScore senior vice president of mobile, said yesterday in a statement. "The decline in Web-based e-mail is a byproduct of these shifting dynamics and the increasing availability of on-demand communication options."Despite the move toward mobile, e-mail is still one of the most popular activities on the Web, with more than 70 percent of online users accessing their messages via the Web each month. For November, ComScore reported that 153 million people checked their Web-based e-mail accounts. That compares with 70.1 million mobile users--30 percent of all mobile subscribers--who accessed e-mail through their mobile devices.(Credit:ComScore)Still, the rise in mobile e-mail usage is significant. ComScore found that 43.5 million people used their mobile phones for e-mail on a daily basis in November, a jump of 40 percent from the prior year. The disparity between mobile and Web was even greater among the younger crowd.People ages 25 to 34 were 60 percent more likely to check mobile e-mail than the average mobile subscriber, while those 18 to 24 were 46 percent more likely. In contrast, the use of Web-based e-mail fell 24 percent among those 12 to 17, while the total amount of time spent checking their Web e-mail dropped 48 percent.ComScore based its results for this study on data from its Media Metrix and MobiLens services.

0 Vote(s)

The video game industry posted its best-ever November sales on the strength of Microsoft's Kinect motion controller and games like Call of Duty: Black Ops.That was the report from industry analyst, The NPD Group, which puts out monthly tallies for total video game software and hardware sales. According to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, the video game business was good for $2.99 billion in November, up 8 percent from $2.76 billion a year earlier, and about $30 million more than the previous record November in 2008.According to Frazier, every category of the business was up for the month except portable hardware and software. And Microsoft'sXbox 360--likely on the strength of its brand-new Kinect, saw a sales boost of 68 percent from a year earlier. Microsoft said that it sold 2.5 million Kinects in just 25 days, and 1.37 million Xboxes. In its own release, Microsoft touted its sixth-straight monthly win in the head-to-head-to-head battle for console supremacy between its Xbox, Sony'sPlayStation 3, and Nintendo'sWii. In addition, Microsoft's cited NPD's numbers in saying that four of the top-10 titles at retail for the month were for the Xbox platform: Call of Duty: Black Ops, Fable III, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and Halo: Reach. All told, NPD said, 40 percent of all video game dollars spent in November were spent on Xbox 360 games, hardware, or accessories. For its part, Nintendo said it sold 1.2 million Wiis, as well as 1.5 million Nintendo DS units. As of this writing, Sony had not issued a release touting its sales for the month. On the software side, Call of Duty: Black Ops quickly raced to 8.7 million units sold, becoming in less than a month, the 7th-best selling game of all time.

0 Vote(s)

Who says Flash video has to monopolize your laptop and drain its battery at scary rate Aside from Steve Jobs, that isDivx, the video technology company whose software is in dozens of Blu-ray players and other devices, is releasing today a browser plug-in, DivX HiQ, that replaces the video engine in Adobe's own Flash player with what they say is its own, lighter, faster, better, stronger player. The pitch: now you can get a good video experience even on your underpowered old computer, or your Netbook.Once installed -- it comes as part of the DivX Plus Web Player, available on Download.com -- when you hit a video on a site that the player knows about, like YouTube, you get a second "play" button under the usual player. I tested the beta of HiQ on a few systems--a worn-out old ThinkPad, a 2-year-old MacBook, and a screaming fast desktop--and found the biggest gain on the ThinkPad. Videos played more smoothly, especially when I selected high-definition streams (720p or 1080p). I was able to play all videos in full-screen mode, too, something I haven't attempted on this PC for a while. I didn't notice much of a performance difference on my MacBook or my desktop PC. The DivX HiQ add-on gives you a supplementary Play button on selected sites. YouTube shown.(Credit:Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET) DivX rep Ryan Taylor told me that his company's video decoding technology is just better, which means devices running it can do more video with less horsepower, leading to better-looking movies, better battery life, and cooler laps. The HiQ product can also use the graphics processor of the computer it's running on, to put the video decoding on the chip best designed to do it. Adobe, though, is currently beta-testing its own Flash Player 10.2, which also uses the graphical processing unit. Why Adobe is still, in 2010, in beta on GPU-accelerated video decoding is an open question' this feature should have been baked into the player at least a year ago. DivX's little freebie add-on is a bit of a marketing play. The download will come with an optional codec pack and a converter tool. But mostly, as Taylor says, "it identifies and links our brand the highest-quality playback possible." The company has not discussed this add-on with Adobe or with Apple. You can get DivX technology running on several tablet computers today, including the hot new Galaxy Tab. But it won't work as an end-run around Apple's Flash block for theiPhone oriPad. (It also won't work on sites that apply DRM to streams, like NetFlix or Hulu.) If you want to watch full-screen videos on your Netbook today, the DivX HiQ player is a good bet. I'd recommend it over the Flash 10.2 beta, since it's released code, and since as an add-on to your already-installed Flash player it can easily be ignored if it doesn't work better. But once Adobe pushes the 10.2 update out of beta, DivX will have to rely on the attraction of the other parts of the download bundle to get people to even know about it.

0 Vote(s)

Here&'s the latest action we&'re following on the GreenBeat today:GE will acquire Lineage Power for $520 million &8212' GE is purchasing the company from Gores Group in a move to expand its energy business. Lineage Power makes high-efficiency power conversion technology used in data centers and telecom.SoloPower awaits $20 million loan for Oregon factory &8212' Thin-film solar manufacturer SoloPower recently raised $51 million and is now awaiting a decision on its application for a $20 million loan for a 75-megawatt factory from Oregon&'s State Energy Loan Program, the Oregonian writes. The decision should be handed down today, so stay tuned to GreenBeat.Ford not a fan of Better Placea4a4s battery switch &8212' Electric vehicle infrastructure company Better Place wants to popularize a battery switching technology that allows for the five-minute swap of a depleted electric car battery with a fully-charged one. It has raised hundreds of millions of dollars and partnered with GE in the process, but the switching requires automakers to make electric vehicles compatible with Better Placea4a4s switch stations. Ford said this week that doing so wouldna4a4t make sense for them because it would hold the company back from progressing to new electric vehicle battery technology, Fast Company reports. Toyota will mass produce plug-in hybrid batteries &8212' Toyotaa4a4s Prius plug-in hybrid is slated for limited release in 2012, but according to reports, Toyota will be manufacturing batteries for plug-in hybrids at the rate of 100,000 a year. The company is making lithium ion batteries for the first time ever in one of its own plants and at a factory operated with Panasonic that will cost $120 million, according to the Nikkei business daily (and re-reported by Reuters).Electric hybrid Chevy Volt technology may come to a GM minivan &8212' That&'s according to GM CEO Dan Akerson&'s comments published in Autoblog Green. Akerson says he wants 10 percent of GM&'s cars to be plug-in or hybrids within 10 to 15 years, and he expects one car within each of GM&'s divisions (Buick, Cadillac, etc.) to eventually use technology from Chevrolet&'s Volt electric car. Texas still has other lawsuits pending to challenge the EPA&'s authority to regulate greenhouse gases, the Texas Tribune reports.
Tiny Speck, a game startup founded by high-profile entrepreneur Stewart Butterfield, released a trailer and new web site today unveiling a glimpse of the zany world of the company&'s Glitch game.Butterfield started the company last year. He&'s better known for creating photo-sharing site Flickr with his wife Caterina Fake, a site that was bought by Yahoo in 2005. Butterfield created Tiny Speck with a number of the core people from Flickr, including Cal Henderson, former head of engineering at Flickr. In the game, there are 11 giants &''who thought of funny things until their thinking came alive.&'' You play beings inside their thoughts. &''Go and make them bigger, and you&'ll play for a long while,&'' the song says.Offhand, it looks like a cute kids virtual world, akin to worlds such as Club Penguin or Fantage. But the trailer closes with the scary image of a crow, known as The Rook, with bloodshot eyes. So while this looks like a children&'s game, it will likely have some scary elements too. The Rook, according to the site, &''is dark and opposes all creativity. And they will try to attack the game world, especially locations which are left a little too neglected.&''You can sign up for beta testing now, but the game looks like it will launch in the spring. Techcrunch reported that Glitch underwent extensive user testing over the weekend with thousands of players. Based on the video, it appears to be very zany and original.Butterfield told the New York Times that he has been thinking of a return to video games for a long time. The company has raised $6.5 million from investors including Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and several prominent angel investors. The game will be free to play to start with, but users can buy virtual goods or take out subscriptions to access additional levels. Users can also open stores within the game and pay Tiny Speck to advertise. The game will be on Facebook as well as on its own web site.Check out the video below to see the new Glitch trailer.Next Story: Foursquare looks for full team of West Coast engineers Previous Story: a4AUnlimited juicea4 electric vehicle charging plans: Good idea or exploitationPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Glitch, social gameCompanies: flickr, Tiny Speck, YahooPeople: Cal Henderson, Caterina Fake, Stewart Butterfield Tags: Glitch, social gameCompanies: flickr, Tiny Speck, YahooPeople: Cal Henderson, Caterina Fake, Stewart ButterfieldDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Today at the Web 2.0 Summit, Google CEO Eric Schmidt kicked off his interview by pulling out a new, hitherto unreleased Android Phone (it&'s almost certainly the Nexus S). Schmidt coyly avoided talking abou the device itself, but he revealed that the newest version of Android, codenamed Gingerbread, will bring with it a very interesting new feature: Near Field Communication. You may not have heard of NFC before, but it&'s a very exciting technology (and it&'s actually been around for a while). The gist of it: new Android phones will have a chip that let you tap your phone against special sensors to complete a specific action. That sounds vague, but it&'s got plenty of practical applications. One of them involves credit cards a4"a4syou&'ll be able to hook up your credit card to your Android phone, and conduct transactions simply by tapping your phone against a sensor. There are plenty of other possible uses too. Tap your phone against a location-aware sensor, and it can check you into whatever venue you&'re standing in, without having to bother with opening app on your phone.Another interesting point: it&'s been rumored that the next iPhone will feature similar NFS technology. Google seems poised to beat them to the punch though, as it looks like the Nexus S will include the chip and other new Android devices will surely follow suit. We&'ve know that Gingerbread is coming soon' Schmidt confirmed that it&'s coming within the next few weeks.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall.Apple, BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion and HTC were the only major phone makers to gain ground in the phone market over the course of the past year ending in the third quarter, according to a report by Gartner.Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson a4" all manufacturers of voice-centric feature phones as well as smartphones a4" all saw significant drops in total market share. That&'s likely a testament to the increasing popularity of smartphones a4" whose sales nearly doubled in the third quarter this year when compared to the same quarter last year. Android continues to grow and now runs on a quarter of all smartphones a4" creeping ever closer to Symbian. Gartner predicted that Android would blitz past Symbian and other operating systems as the most popular smartphone OS by 2014.Symbian, the operating system of Nokia, continues its terminal velocity free-fall into phone limbo as its market share fell from 36.7 percent in the third quarter last year to 28.2 percent of all phone users in the same quarter this year. Nokia publicly acknowledged Symbian&'s messy status when it stepped in andtook complete control of the operating system&'s development from the non-profit Symbian Foundation. Its baffling attempt at a smartphone chained to the Symbian platform a4" the Nokia N8 a4" also ended up falling short, according to VentureBeat&'s mobile writer Devindra Hardawar.Apple picked up about an extra 1 percent of the total number of phone users in the third quarter this year compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Research in Motion picked up about an extra tenth of a percent. HTC, which manufactures a number of phones running on Google&'s Android operating system, nearly doubled its market share a4" growing from 0.9 percent to 1.6 percent of total smartphone users.Despite a strong showing from Apple in the third quarter, when it sold 14.1 million iPhones, the total number of smartphone carriers using its iPhone operating system fell slightly in the third quarter this year when compared to the same quarter in 2009. That will probably change when the mythical Verizon Wireless iPhone arrives sometime early next year. Until then, around 75 percent of smartphones sold by Verizon have run on Android. All these metrics may also become completely disrupted as tablet computers begin to dominate the mobile market next year, Gartner said. The technology research firm is predicting that the internet-connected tablet market will reach 54.8 million devices in 2011 a4" so that might also have an impact on Apple&'s market share of smartphone operating systems, according to Gartner.[Photo: Ed Yourdon]Previous Story: Privacy spat heats up: Google taunts Facebook with &''Trap My Data&'' featurePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Blackberry, dumbphone, Google Android, iOS, iPhone, SymbianCompanies: Apple, Gartner, Google, Lg, motorola, nokia, Research In Motion, RIM, Samsung, sony ericsson Tags: Android, Blackberry, dumbphone, Google Android, iOS, iPhone, SymbianCompanies: Apple, Gartner, Google, Lg, motorola, nokia, Research In Motion, RIM, Samsung, sony ericssonVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
The U.S. Department of Energy continues to churn out important announcements &8212' today establishing a fellowship program via its ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency &8211' Energy) initiative. This news follows the Department&'s distribution of $100 million in stimulus grants to experimental fuel, battery and carbon capture projects yesterday. The fellowship program, which lasts two years, underscores the focus on jobs and the cultivation of people, not just technology to wage the climate battle. Scientists and researchers selected to be ARPA-E fellows will assist its directors to create programs, and continue their individual investigations as full-tie federal employees. They will also be encouraged to collaborate with one another to develop bold and disruptive green technologies. Some of these brainstorms will ideally result in formal proposals to Department of Energy higher-ups.The group will be split between senior fellows, those with more than three years of professional work in a relevant field, and regular fellows, which are anticipated to be mostly post-doctoral researchers and even recent college graduates. ARPA-E&'s leadership says it is looking for the best and the brightest minds to mold the new energy economy. Also pertinent to the DOE&'s stimulus allotment, it has also announced that financial institutions and investors can increase their involvement in companies that have received low-interest loan guarantees from the Department. Energy Secretary Steven Chu says that the change should give companies more flexibility in how they spend their money, better stimulate private investment in cleantech concepts, and defray costs for American taxpayers. Before this ruling, players like export credit agencies and financial institutions were unable to provide complementary financing to companies that had received Title XVII loans or federal loan guarantees. Chu says the announcement is the final say on loan guarantee regulations. On an unrelated note, the DOE is still closing cracks in existing energy efficiency regulations. Yesterday, it said it would sharpen the Energy Star program&'s teeth (as of Jan. 2), stripping certain refrigerator-freezers of Energy Star status, particularly those made by LG. Apparently, several independent parties have verified that the appliances don&'t meet criteria for the coveted label. The Energy Star labels have been a factor in consumer consciousness for a while, signaling both an opportunity for conservation as well as energy savings. Studies have shown that it has become a real factor in how people choose which appliances to buy. It&'s unclear whether LG will lose revenue based on the decision, but the company has already filed suit against the DOE for its actions &8212' obviously it&'s concerned.Next Story: DiscoveryBeat: Zynga&'s tips for social gaming success Previous Story: Time and other publishers announce digital newsstandPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Camille was the lead writer for GreenBeat until August 2010.
