After holding the top spot in the global smartphone market for years, Nokia may soon lose its dominance to Samsung and Apple, according to an investors' note from Nomura Securities.Sometime this quarter, the investment firm expects Samsung to grab first place, followed by Apple in second, a move that would shake up a landscape led by Nokia since 1996."We are forecasting that Samsung takes the No. 1 position in smartphones in Q2 (fractionally) and that it extends this lead in Q3," said Nomura. "This represents a significant turnaround from a 4.8 percent share in 1Q10 to 20.4 percent in Q3 2011."At the same time, Apple's smartphone unit share will remain steady at around 17 percent, but Nokia's is expected to drop from its current 25 percent to about 16 percent. Beyond the current quarter, Nokia will continue to shed market share, according to Nomura, and could be be overtaken by HTC by the end of next year.Hit by competition and a difficult market, Nokia recently slashed its sales forecast for the second quarter. The company also is in an awkward position for now as it tries to transition from its own operating systems to Windows Phone, courtesy of its recent deal with Microsoft.Nokia is pinning much of its hopes on Windows Phone, but Nomura doesn't see the company's fortunes improving anytime soon."Market shares in mobile phones have swung greatly in prior years and so a come-back from Nokia is feasible, in our view," Nomura said. "However, we see no evidence of a product led turnaround and continue to see better opportunities among Asian vendors in particular."Though it's slated to take second place as a global smartphone maker, Apple faces its own own brand of challenges, said analyst Richard Windsor of Nomura, speaking last week at the Open Mobile Summit. Pointing out that gross margins in the smartphone industry are too high, Windsor expects a move toward less pricey units."We see the handset market becoming much more competitive," Windsor noted. "The number of people who'll pay $500 or $600 for a smartphone [the wholesale price before carrier subsidies] is rapidly running out."New growth will come from AsianAndroid phone makers such as LG Electronics and HTC, forcing Apple to decide if it wants to jump onto the cheaper phone bandwagon, a potential move that would be at least a year away.

0 Vote(s)

Motorola and Huawei Technologies have patched up their legal differences in disputes over the potential sharing of trade secrets. The companies announced today that they've entered into an agreement to settle all litigation in two separate legal matters, pending certain conditions.China-based Huawei has agreed to withdraw its lawsuit against Motorola and Nokia Siemens Networks. The suit, filed in January, sought to block Motorola's sale of its wireless equipment business to Nokia Siemens on the grounds that Motorola could reveal certain Huawei trade secrets to Nokia Siemens.Related links&149' Huawei sues Motorola over sale to Nokia&149' Motorola selling network gear biz for $1.2 billion&149' Huawei rebuts 'misperceptions' of U.S. authoritiesIn return for settling the suit, Huawei will received an undisclosed amount of money from Motorola to transfer its commercial agreements with Huawei. The agreement also allows Nokia to actually use certain confidential information revealed to Motorola about Huawei in order to manage the networks that it set up around the world using Huawei technology. The $1.2 billion deal that would see Motorola's wireless networks and employees transferred to Nokia triggered the lawsuit by Huawei. Since Motorola has sold Huawei's wireless equipment for years, its employees are versed in Huawei's products and technology. Seeing Nokia Siemens as a competitor, Huawei alleged in its suit that any Motorola workers who moved over to Nokia could reveal certain trade secrets. On its end, Motorola has agreed to dismiss a claim against Huawei in a legal action in which Motorola sued Huawei for allegedly stealing trade secrets as part of a corporate espionage case. The matter also involved a networking company called Lemko, with which Huawei had a reseller agreement. In 2008, Motorola sued five former employees for sharing information with Lemko."We regret that these disputes have occurred between our two companies," Greg Brown, president and CEO of Motorola Solutions, said in a statement. "Motorola Solutions values the long-standing relationship we have had with Huawei. After reviewing the facts, we decided to resolve these matters and return to our traditional relationship of confidence and trust. I am pleased that we can again focus on having a cooperative and productive relationship."

0 Vote(s)

I don't know about you, but my first thought is that it must have been Eminem. He appeared in a highly visible (and, to some, risible) Super Bowl ad for Chrysler. He swears a lot. Perhaps they didn't pay him on time. Perhaps he's just in a bad mood.In any case, some wise soul, employee or associate of Chrysler (or not), managed to tweet the following on Chrysler's official Twitter feed: "I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the motorcity and yet no one here knows how to f***ing drive."Even though the tweet has been removed, confirmation of its existence comes from the Twitter hashtag motorcity, which shows, astoundingly, that hundreds of people have retweeted this passionate communication.(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)For its part, Chrysler has tweeted a wringing of the hands: "Our apologies--our account was compromised earlier today. We are taking steps to resolve it."This is an interesting set of words. If they are taking steps to resolve it, does this mean that a Chrysler employee may, indeed, have been involved in this amusementOr could it be that the same deft cove who plundered his way into Ashton Kutcher's Twitter feed at last week's TED conference has struck againJalopnik is reporting that the culprit is an employee of Chrysler's social media agency New Media Strategies.Perhaps, when all is revealed, this will merely be a story that has, at its heart, one of Eminem's own songs: it must the ganja.

0 Vote(s)

While the Motorola Xoom will be a test of the viability of the mediatablet design beyondApple's iPad, as I've written before, the question is in what numbers will consumers pour, or trickle, into Verizon stores to grab one. Let's begin by looking at Samsung, which has been trying to test the waters with its 7-inch Galaxy Tab. This is obviously just a pilot run for Samsung, as it does not use Google's Android operating system for tablets ("Honeycomb") and has hardware (specs here) that will be quickly made obsolete by the Xoom and RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook--not to mention the iPad 2. And the Galaxy Tab is a bit of an enigma. It's not clear how successful Samsung's marketing effort has been, despite earlier reports. Samsung did not state shipment numbers for the Galaxy Tab in its year-end financial statement, though it cited figures for just about every other marquee mobile device it sells. And this report states--by way of a correction--that Samsung will not confirm a year-end number for the Galaxy Tab. The point All things considered, the current design of the Galaxy Tab is probably not a great test case for the market beyond the iPad. Motorola Xoom shown in dock with keyboard.(Credit:Motorola)So, what endows the Xoom with so much potential This is a concerted effort by Google to make the Android tablet a success. Google has selected Motorola and Nvidia as partners to make sure the first Honeycomb tablet will hit the market with plenty of impact."Google's strategy has been to partner with a particular device maker and particular chipmaker and come out with that first generation of product," Richard Shim, an analyst with market researcher DisplaySearch, said in a phone interview earlier this week. As a result, Motorola will be the exclusive purveyor of the initial Honeycomb tablet. And the Xoom's specs are certainly impressive. Honeycomb promises features such as an improved System Bar, better tabbed browsing, and an improved virtual keyboard--among numerous other tweaks and modifications. And the choice of Nvidia as the provider of the dual-core silicon--replete with Nvidia's renowned graphics technology--is not surprising, according to Shim. "The smartphone is not very different from the tablet. The difference is that the tablet has a bigger screen, which translates to a bigger viewing area, which means a better graphics opportunity. Nvidia is an ideal candidate," he said. And Motorola, of course, is good choice for a tablet supplier, as its Droid smartphones have competed well in the U.S. against the iPhone. So, let's say--hypothetically at this point--that there are both Wi-Fi-only and 3G versions of the Xoom. And let's say rumors about an initial $699 price tag prove correct. Would you consider buying one Or would Motorola need to go a couple of hundred dollars lower (The iPad starts at $499 and ranges up to $829.) That decision could determine whether tablets are just an Apple phenomenon or the real deal. (See CNET video of Xoom at CES.)

0 Vote(s)

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla.--Engineers believe they have zeroed in on the root cause of cracks in the shuttle Discovery's external tank, NASA officials said today. Installation of a relatively simple modification to the tops of the structural ribs, or stringers, where the ship's liquid oxygen tank is supported by a massive flange should resolve the problem once and for all, officials say, setting the stage for another launch attempt February 24."We're on the road to bringing this tank to a hundred percent," said shuttle Program Manager John Shannon. "It's been two months of very vigorous activity, it took a lot of investigation to piece the different components of how this could be happening together, but I'm very confident we've finally got this figured out and we have a fix that's easy to implement and will be 100 percent effective."Engineers are preparing to install stiffeners on the shuttle Discovery&39's external tank that should prevent the formation of cracks like those discovered in the wake of a November 5 launch attempt. NASA managers hope to make another launch attempt February 24.(Credit:NASA)Discovery's late February launch window opens the day after the European Space Agency's unmanned Automated Transfer Vehicle, loaded with supplies and equipment, reaches the International Space Station. The ATV is scheduled for launch from French Guiana on February 15. Mission managers initially planned a docking on February 26, but ESA, NASA, and Russian managers have agreed to aim for a docking February 23 instead. Assuming the ATV takes off and docks on time, Discovery would be set for another launch attempt at 4:50:13 p.m. ET on February 24.If all goes well, NASA hopes to have the shuttle Endeavour ready for launch on its final mission by around April 18. But planning for that flight is somewhat uncertain. Commander Mark Kelly's wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot in the head Saturday in Tucson by a gunman who killed six and wounded 13 others. Giffords remains in critical condition. At a news briefing today to discuss the external tank investigation, Bill Gerstenmaier, director of space operations at NASA headquarters in Washington, declined to discuss Kelly's status, saying "out of respect to the family, we really are not ready to answer those questions today.""We're going to let Mark decide really kind of what he needs to do," Gerstenmaier said. "We'll let his personal situation take focus...and later when we know more about where [the Endeavour mission] sits and what our options are for Mark and his activities, we'll come talk to you at that time...Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and we're really thinking about Mark in everything we do."The external tank crack problem first surfaced during fueling for a November 5 launch attempt. Discovery's countdown was called off because of a gaseous hydrogen leak, a problem that was later resolved. But engineers also noticed a large crack in the external tank's foam insulation that developed during fueling. When the foam was removed later, four cracks were found in the "feet" of two adjacent ribs in a compartment that separates the tank's liquid oxygen and hydrogen sections. The cracks presumably developed when the liquid oxygen tank was loaded with super-cold propellant, causing the flange that supports it to contract, pulling the top few inches of the intertank stringers inward. Tank components are designed to cope with that stress without breaking, but for some reason cracks developed near the tops of two stringers in Discovery's tank.Engineers were immediately concerned, citing two potentially serious issues. Cracked stringers could result in foam insulation falling off during flight that could pose an impact threat to the shuttle's fragile heat shield. And if enough stringers failed, the structural integrity of the tank could be compromised.NASA launched a wide-ranging investigation to figure out the root cause of the cracks and what might be needed to correct the problem. A full-scale instrumented fueling test was carried out December 17 to precisely map out the stresses acting on the tank during fueling. Discovery then was moved off the pad and back to the Vehicle Assembly Building for additional inspections.Engineers then found four more cracks on the back side of the tank near the tops of three stringers, which could not be inspected at the launch pad. Like the first set of cracks, these were repaired by splicing in fresh stringer segments and attaching doublers for additional strength.Believing built-in stresses from assembly likely caused the cracks, engineers proposed installing doublers on stringers to either side of massive solid rocket booster attachment panels that experience the most stress during flight. But as it turned out, the issue was more complicated than first suspected. Engineers reviewing manufacturing records discovered that the aluminum-lithium alloy used in 78 of the 108 stringers in the intertank of Discovery's external tank came from a batch that had a mottled appearance, possibly the result of heat treatments during the alloy's formulation. Testing showed the material used in those stringers had just 65 percent of the expected fracture strength. On New Year's Eve, Shannon said, engineers successfully re-created a crack using the same mottled aluminum-lithium alloy in a test rig that subjected it to the same sorts of stress the tank experiences during fueling."We absolutely have root cause and we have been able to show that through tests," he said. "It's a combination of two factors. It's the low fracture toughness of the material...combined with some assembly stresses that were built up in different areas."We know that because when we loaded the tank [with propellant], we put high stress on all of those stringers that had that low fracture toughness and we only had cracks in 5 of what we believe were 78 stringers. In looking at those stringers that cracked, we're seeing the evidence of those assembly stresses that combined with that low fracture toughness to cause the problem. So we have root cause and we have a fix that we're completely confident will eliminate those root causes."The fix is installation of radius block plates all the way around the circumference of the upper intertank to beef up the under-strength stringers. The repair calls for engineers to remove the top few rivets holding the sides of each stringer in place. An aluminum plate--a radius block--is then placed over the stringer attachment "feet" and riveted into place. The idea is to lock the stringer flat against the side of the tank and make it less susceptible to the stresses that could cause fractures to develop.Shannon said engineers are carrying out tests and analyses to make sure the repairs do not introduce any unintended consequences."We're proving that out through tests, we're looking at the strain, we're looking at the stiffness and verifying in the tests that material that does not have a radius block does not behave any different than one that does have a radius block," he said. "We're going through and modeling that through the entire tank and verifying we're not going to do any harm. Right now, it looks really good."The repair work is expected to be completed by around January 23. After that, engineers will move Discovery back to pad 39A for work to ready the ship for launch.

0 Vote(s)

Looking for something fun or educational to do this weekend A just-launched site called GameMaki aims to be your guide. The basic mechanics of the site look pretty straightforward. Users can post suggestions for worthwhile activities and assemble some of those activities into a set of suggestions called a GameMaki. Then if youa4a4re looking for something to do, you can browse the site or see what your friends posted, vote suggestions up or down, and add items to your to-do list. Once you actually do the activity, you claim it on the site and win points and badges. With its application of game mechanics to real-world activities, particularly the way it awards points and badges, GameMaki has probably taken some inspiration from location-based app Foursquare &8212' and Foursquare includes activity tips too. The difference, as pointed out by co-founder and chief executive Keith Ng, is that GameMaki isna4a4t tied to your location, so you can include activities that take place anywhere, like a4ARun 10 miles.a4 (Foursquare has dipped its toe into rewards that arena4a4t tied into location check-ins, but I dona4a4t think it has gone very far in this direction.)Thata4a4s not to say that GameMaki challenges cana4a4t be location-specific. The company has created a special set of activities related to the South by Southwest conference thata4a4s just starting up in Austin, and most of them involve visiting a particular location, whether ita4a4s the GameMaki booth or the conference kick-off party.Ia4a4ve played with the site, and the challenges definitely cover a lot of ground &8212' they include everything from a4Arevive the 80s tomorrowa4 to a4Aabstain from shopping this weekenda4 to a4Acreate your own variant of Vincent Van Gogha4a4s Starry Night.a4 That could be an advantage, if GameMaki users find lots of fun suggestions that arena4a4t available elsewhere, but it also risks making the site feel a little random.GameMaki opened to the public today, and ita4a4s still in beta testing. Ng said his team is also working on a mobile application. The site was created by Singaporean startup Socialico. Investors include Myspace founder Brad Greenspana4a4s Social Slingshot Fund and Robert Bong, the chief executive of UCSI University in Malaysia.Previous Story: Apple faithful gather for iPad 2 launch (video)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Companies: GameMakiPeople: Keith Ng Companies: GameMakiPeople: Keith NgAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
