Amazon App of the Day - 5/20/11(Credit:Amazon)If you've tried Seesmic, Twitdroyd, TweetDeck, the stock Twitter-type application on your phone, or the official Twitter app, but continue to search for that "one," why not try another On Amazon.com's Appstore forAndroid you can download the full, ad-free version of TweetCaster Pro for Android (normally $4.99) by Handmark, for nada, niente, rien, nichts, gratis. A lot has been improved upon since our review back in March 2011. With a new feature, Zip It, you can remove users or trends from your feed without unfollowing them. Instapaper support lets you save long articles to read later. Use Color Coding to personalize your own tweets and @replies with a custom color of your choosing. At the top of the list are five tabs for your full tweet list, tweets that just mention you, direct messages, your favorites, and any lists that you follow or follow you. Gone are the small yellow dot indicators for new tweets or mentions--we now see the number of tweets, mentions, and direct messages on the appropriate tabs. TweetCaster allows you to add a picture or video from galleries or directly from your mobile device's camera. Built-in URL shortening is also available, and you can quickly add geotag information or the usernames of your contacts to a tweet. Linking your Facebook account to TweetCaster will update that profile as well. The feature list goes on. Free Amazon App of the Day - 5/20/11 (screenshots) It's not perfect, but it is one of the better, simpler, and cleaner Twitter-based apps out there for Android users. TweetCaster Pro will be Amazon's free App of the Day until 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT tonight. Try it out. There's always the option of uninstalling if it doesn't suit your needs, and free is free.

0 Vote(s)

Angry Birds player Jonas Koivula (in the plaid shirt) watches another finalist in the competition.(Credit:Nokia)There were 2,600 participants, five Angry Birds, and, in the end, one steady-handed 19-year-old champion of them all.Nokia recently held an Angry Birds championship in downtown Helsinki to determine who was the best finch flinger in all of Finland. The competition was tough, and only the top 32 players were present after regional tournaments singled out the best of the best. After all, 2,600 people from across the Nordic country had tried out--like a geeky version of "American Idol"--to see if they had what it takes to be crowned the champion of the game. One finalist was only 6 years old, and relied on his father's smartphone to keep his skills fresh. The stakes were high, and gamers were naturally allured by the entitlement of being the best player of a game that has sold millions of copies across various platforms around the world. The grand prize, aside from a shiny plaque honoring the champ like a title belt, was a Nokia N8 and a trip for two to Hollywood. Hot and sunny California is a mighty attractive destination for someone who lives in a land that often has short summers and snow-filled winters.Competitors faced off by playing four levels in a row, and whoever had the most points at the end advanced to the next segment of the competition. In the end, 19-year-old Jonas Koivula won, flying past others in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final round as a large crowd cheered him on. When the winner was crowned, over a hundred green pig plush toys dropped on the crowd like confetti on New Year's Eve.Nokia's official blog revealed that Koivula studied for school by day and played Angry Birds at night, and spent two months practicing for the finals.I'd love to see how you practice for a video game championship.
China Unicom, one of China's three largest wireless operators, plans to introduce its own mobile operating system to compete head-to-head with Apple'siPhone and Google's Android OS in China. The Wall Street Journal reported today that the wireless operator, which is building a third-generation wireless network that competes with China Mobile and China Telecom, is developing a new mobile OS brand known as "WoPhone."The new operating system is based on Linux, and it's geared toward mobile handsets andtablets. Companies that plan to build devices using the new OS include China's ZTE, Huawei Technologies, and TCL. South Korea's Samsung Electronics, U.S.-based Motorola, and Taiwan's HTC are also building devices using the new OS, China Unicom's parent company, China United Network Communications Group, said in a statement today. The company said in its statement that it hopes the new software will help the company develop 3G wireless devices more rapidly, thus getting them into the market more quickly. This is important because the Chinese 3G wireless market is just heating up with the major carriers battling for new 3G subscribers. China Unicom has a long way to go in terms of winning new customers and trails behind larger players, such as China Mobile. As of January, China Unicom had 169.7 million mobile subscribers, including 15.5 million 3G customers. Meanwhile China Mobile had 589.3 million subscribers, including 22.6 million 3G customers. Late last year, China Unicom launched WoStore, a mobile-application storefront that it said would support "all open smartphone platforms."Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems are starting to gain market share in China. But they are not as prevalent as they are in other markets, such as the U.S. or Europe. In China, Nokia's Symbian platform still garners the greatest market share in the smartphone market with 60.1 percent of all smartphones, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based market research firm. Windows Mobile has the second highest market share with 13.1 percent.Google Android is third with 10.7 percent of the market. And Apple's iOS has about 5.4 percent.Other wireless operators in China have also said they'd build their own operating systems for wireless devices. China Mobile launched its Android-based OS called "Ophone" in 2009, but the platform hasn't been a hit with customers.A China Unicom spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that the China Unicom WoPhone platform will not be based on Android. But he declined to comment on whether that is because of Google's dispute with China's government last year. Google moved its search servers to Hong Kong from mainland China because it was worried about hacking and censorship.

0 Vote(s)

Should this pedestrian be fined(Credit:Symic/Flickr)For some lawmakers, Cathy Cruz Marrero's now-infamous fall into a fountain while texting couldn't have come at a better time.In California, State Sen. Joe Simitian has reintroduced a bill that would fine cyclists $20 for texting. In Oregon, State Rep. Michael Schaufler wants to fine cyclists $90 for wearing headphones or earbuds. In Virginia, lawmakers are considering whether to broaden such a ban to include any handheld communication device. And in New York, a bill before the legislature's transportation committee would ban the use of electronic devices while crossing streets. This is the second time State Sen. Carl Kruger has introduced this legislation to stem what he calls "tuning in and tuning out." As if to prove his point, a 21-year-old man listening to aniPod Nano in a crosswalk on Madison Avenue in New York last December was killed when a Mack truck backed into him and dragged him 30 feet. Presumably, the man did not hear the beeping of the truck in reverse. The whirlwind of legislation comes at a time when pedestrian fatalities were up for the first time in four years in the first half of 2010, according to a report just released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, which also reports that pedestrian fatalities account for about 12 percent of overall traffic deaths in the United States. Meanwhile, researchers in Washington and in Illinois have been exploring the nature of distraction while walking using cell phones.Sen. Kruger's bill calls for a ban in streets of cities with populations of a million or more people. But the Governors Highway Safety Association reports that in the three biggest states with the biggest cities (New York, California, and Texas), pedestrian fatalities actually fell. Arizona (up 21), Florida (up 36), Oklahoma (up 16), Oregon (up 18), and North Carolina (up 17) saw the largest jumps in pedestrian fatalities over the previous year. While restricting the use of distracting devices incars and on bicycles has become more commonplace across the States, legislation targeting pedestrians and joggers crosses a new line. (In Arkansas, a proposal to ban pedestrians from wearing headphones over both ears was met with such outrage that a legislator withdrew it altogether this week.)Setting aside the obvious debate over whether a person should retain the basic right to walk or jog distracted, the next questions include whether this kind of ban will work to save lives, and if so, at what costIf the bill in New York passes, these questions will be answered in due time. Until then, expect to see a range of legal questions about the finer details of the ban, including what, exactly, constitutes a street, and a crossing of the street, and which electronic devices, if any, may be excused from said ban.

0 Vote(s)

Mobile ad startup Greystripe just announced that it has signed a deal with Media Networks, Inc. that will bring local advertising into the Greystripe ad network for the first time.Director of marketing Dane Holewinski said that until now, Greystripe has focused on national ad campaigns for large brands. Now, the San Francisco startup wants to start tapping into the growing market for local, mobile ads. It points to a study from BIA Kelsey predicting that the local mobile ad market could be worth more than $2 billion in 2014.The deal isna4a4t really focused on a4Ahyperlocala4 ads that know exactly where the viewer is and which store is offering a sale a block away, Hoelwinski said, but on &''local&'' in a more traditional sense, serving the publishers and advertisers who want to limit their campaigns to a certain region or city. With the new deal, MNIa4a4s salesforce will sell local ads that will appear in the Greystripe network.
