Don't search by links, search by pages.(Credit:Do@)Imagine that you're searching for a restaurant or for a movie time on youriPhone, but instead of receiving a long list of links, you see thumbnail images for Web sites instead. Meet Do@ (doo-at) (iTunes download), a newly launched iPhone freebie that does just that. With Do@, search results aren't just thumbnails for pages you have to load, they're active Web sites that you can enter, explore, and exit without losing the rest of those live site results.Search begins with a query as usual, and when you start typing, the app supplies suggestions--not for common phrases, but for contextual categories to narrow your search. For example, type "Inception" and you'll get to pick from suggestions like "Inception @search," "@movies," "@Netflix," and so on. Type sushi and you'll see restaurant, recipe, and Amazon category types. The app launches with about 30 categories and more than 400 searchable Web apps. There are all the usual social networking tie-ins like sharing on Twitter, Facebook, and via e-mail, and marking favorites. The app is notably rich as well, with tricks like being able to scrub through a filmstrip of visual search results, and scroll beyond a first page of results to a second, even third batch. The more you pick a site in your search results, the closer to the top of your results list you'll see it on subsequent searches (you can remove the app to downshift its importance in future attempts.) If your friends use Do@, their recommendations will also surface higher in your results queue.(Credit:Do@)Do@ also has its discovery and business angles in mind. App publishers, let's say Yelp, for instance, can choose if tapping a result will open the Yelp native app if you have it installed. Otherwise, Do@ serves up the HTML-based Web app by default. Do@ also intends to incorporate site promotions in the results stream.Do@'s media and lifestyle focus is clear, as is its goal to revolutionize search. Unlike other apps that claim such a feat, Do@'s approach is actually innovative, interesting, and useful. That was our impression after the demo, at least, but we'll continue with real-world testing in the ensuing weeks. There's still room for growth, as well. For example, we hope to see voice search enabled in future updates. For all your friends withAndroid smartphones, Do@ plans to release a sister app for Android...sometime "in the near future."

0 Vote(s)

Best Buy is on its way to losing more market share to competing retailers, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said in a note to investors yesterday."We expect continued market share losses in consumer electronics to online retailers and lower-priced big-box competitors, and entertainment software to GameStop, Amazon, and Wal-Mart," Pachter wrote.Pachter believes Best Buy's decline is due mainly to its market strategy. The analyst said that the company's "offering the widest selection of goods at premium price points is undermined by value-focused comparison shopping."During its latest reported quarter, announced last month, Best Buy posted weaker-than-expected sales across several categories, including TVs, computers, and video games. Overall, it saw comparable store sales decline by 3 percent compared to the previous year. However, the company still generated a profit of $217 million on nearly $12 billion in revenue, meaning it might not be time to sound the alarm on Best Buy just yet.But the pressures Best Buy faces are worrisome. Most products the company sells can be purchased online for less. Even Wal-Mart, one of the company's brick-and-mortar competitors, is besting it on price in some cases. And until it finds a solution, market share erosion could be something Best Buy will continue to deal with going forward. Moreover, Best Buy's recent decision to discount items to better match the competition might not be something it can sustain for long, Pachter said. He noted that he "expect[s] to see some pressure on margins when [Best Buy] reports its February earnings" later this year due to that decision. Before that happens, Best Buy is expected to release December sales figures at the end of this week. Pachter believes it will show a 3 percent decline in same-store sales, down from the 2.2 percent decline the analyst first expected Best Buy to post. But the pangs of being a brick-and-mortar retailer are nothing new to Best Buy. The company has watched as its many competitors, including CompUSA and Circuit City, faltered in the face of online competitors. And at least so far, Best Buy has been most capable of weathering that storm.Best Buy declined to comment on Pachter's research note. The company's shares are up $0.60 to $35.07 as of this writing.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Apple may have some big plans for 2011, but one analyst believes the company may be saving one of its biggest announcements for 2012--a television.Gene Munster, a Piper Jaffray senior research analyst, said in a research note today that he believes Apple will enter the TV set market by the end of next year. If Munster is right, that gives Apple two years to design and manufacture the television."While Apple's commitment to the living room remains a 'hobby,' we continue to believe the company will enter the TV market with a full focus, as an all-in-one Apple television could move the needle when connected TVs proliferate," Munster said.An all-in-one TV could include built-in Apple TV, MobileMe access, the iTunes Store, and use of the same network as computers.Apple said in late December that its new Apple TV digital media receiver sold 1 million units since its launch in September. In 2011, Munster expects Apple to release new versions of existing products but does not expect the company to enter any new product categories. Products he expects to see this year include a VerizoniPhone,Mac App Store, iTunes cloud services,iPad expansion to other countries, and the release of Mac OS X Lion.

0 Vote(s)
