A company at the heart of the Web-app revolution hopes a major update to its programming tools will further the new style of development.Sencha plans to release Ext JS 4.0 today, bringing new features and some maturity to the software. Ext JS is a software foundation that lets programmers create Web sites that house active applications, not just static pages, that work not just on modern browsers but also on Microsoft's ancient, despised, but still widely used IE6.Web programming these days is getting steadily more advanced, and indeed Web browsers are becoming more like operating systems with support for hardware acceleration, faster execution of JavaScript programs, and responsibilities for juggling multiple tasks and for isolating software into secure partitions for security and performance reasons. All these abilities make the browser a more sophisticated vessel for software and a more compelling alternative to software that runs natively on an operating system such as Windows or iOS. But given the fact that there are multiple browsers on the market, writing software to work across all of them is complicated. This problem is where Sencha aims to help--and profit. Its tools aren't going to be used for creating Web versions of complicated native software such asMicrosoft Office or Adobe Photoshop, but they are becoming more advanced."Ext JS is about letting you build rich desktop-class Web apps using JavaScript," said Aditya Bansod, Sencha's senior director of product management and a recent transplant from Adobe Systems. For Ext JS 4.0, "We rebuilt large parts of the framework."Specifically, the new software is designed to enable a more modular style of programming called MVC (model-view-controller) better suited to larger corporate programming operations. MVC splits projects up into three domains--the user interface, the interaction with systems such as databases, and the control logic that's the brains of the operation. The technique is common at larger companies with different teams for different domains of programming projects. Another change in Ext JS 4.0 is a move away from Adobe's Flash Player, an all-browser technique for showing graphics. Previously Ext JS required Flash to reach older browsers, but a new drawing engine reaches back even to IE6 without the plug-in. New technology for drawing charts, tables of text, forms, and other information displays also arrives. Those features, such as pie charts, infinite-scrolling lists, and sliders, are designed to appeal to those with one of Sencha's main use cases, online dashboards that let people monitor and control operations through a browser.Ext JS 4.0 also is more easily themed, Bansod said, for those who want a consistent, easily changed look spanning multiple browsers. The company's approach mirrors what it used in Sencha Touch, a related framework the company offers for mobile Web programming.Sencha doesn't have the market to itself, though. In the Web domain, there are tools such as Dojo, Sproutcore, and YUI (Yahoo User Interface) that do much the same thing as Sencha's software. And outside the Web domain, there are of course native tools such as Microsoft's .Net or Apple's Cocoa.Ext JS, like Sencha's other projects, is open-source software that's also available under a commercial license. The company's customers typically go for the commercial versions, though, which doesn't require them to release their own software as open source under the terms of the GNU General Public License, Bansod said.Sencha makes its money through three mechanisms: licensing the software, supporting it, and offering training and other services. The business is spread pretty evenly among the three, Bansod said. The company has more than 50 employees now, but it's planning on filling up its more-spacious new headquarters in Redwood City, Calif."We're hiring very rapidly," Bansod said, and the new 10,000-square-foot site will "accommodate a lot of growth in the next year."

0 Vote(s)

INQ Mobile today took the wraps off two new Android smartphones, headed first for the U.K. market, that are designed for people who depend on Facebook. The INQ Cloud Touch(Credit:INQ)The INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q both heavily integrate the popular social network into their overall operation. Working closely with people at Facebook, INQ has outfitted the home screen with a visual feed that lets users quickly access updates, pictures, videos, and other Facebook content. The phones also provide quick links to various Facebook features, including chats, messages, wall postings, and notifications, according to London-based INQ.Facebook Places is accessible directly from the homescreen, giving people the ability to use the feature to check in at stores, restaurants, clubs, and other spots. Facebook's Events feature is also available to let people schedule events and sync them with Google Calendar. And instead of requiring users to log onto each feature separately, the phones offer a single sign-on to access all of the Facebook features available, INQ said. For entertainment, both phones provide the Spotify music player with all of its features available to subscribers."The INQ Cloud Touch and INQ Cloud Q bring Facebook to people with a single touch while they are mobile and demonstrate the power of socially aware devices," Henri Moissinac, head of mobile business for Facebook, said in a statement. "INQ has built an innovative and easy to use set of features that enable people to use common Facebook interactions such as viewing photos and videos, chat, message, and check-in to their favorite businesses all from the home screen."Few specs were available on the Cloud Q, with INQ saying only that it runs Android Froyo 2.2 and offers a 2.6-inch touchscreen. But the company provided an array of details on the Cloud Touch.Like its sibling, the Touch runs Android 2.2, but ING says it's easily upgradable to Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread. Beyond Facebook Chat, the phone includes Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk for instant messaging.Hardware-wise, the Cloud Touch is powered by a Qualcomm 600MHz 7227 chipset and offers a 3.5-inch HGVA touch screen, 4MB of memory with an option to add more, and a 5-megapixel autofocus camera. Also built into the phone are Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, an FM radio, an accelerometer, and a compass. The company didn't reveal the cost of the new phones, saying only that they would sell at "affordable prices for the mass market." But speculation says that as a midlevel phone geared toward teens, the Cloud Touch could sell for as low as $50 when bought with a contract. The Cloud Touch will reach consumers during the second quarter, specifically reaching users in the U.K. in April, while the Cloud Q will show up sometime in the third quarter. Both phones will sell only at Best Buy and the U.K-based Carphone Warehouse, according to INQ.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Southern California Edison)Southern California Edison announced yesterday it has added seven new community solar plants to its energy repertoire that together generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 8,125 households.SCE now has a total of 10 community-size solar stations, a network of small neighborhood solar stations, which consist of mainly rooftop solar installations on local buildings, connecting to its grid.Four community solar stations in Ontario, Calif., for example, consist of 32,950 photovoltaic panels installed on the rooftops of warehouses owned by ProLogis. SCE leased what amounts to about 1.8 million square feet of roof space from the company. Together the solar plants generate about 5.5 million watts of electricity.SCE's announcement illustrates one movement in the U.S. toward using integrated community-size energy plants distributing electricity locally, as opposed to large plants that sometimes necessitate long-distance transmission to get the electricity to consumers. So far, the community-based projects that have gotten the most attention are largely based on wind. Several wind turbine manufacturers are targeting community-based energy generation, and developing mid-size products that could be accommodated on local rooftops or minimal amounts of land. In May 2010, American Wind Energy Association also announced that sales of small-wind turbines had grown by 15 percent. But not everyone is keen on community-based energy projects. The "not in my back yard" phenomenon is strong with many community groups voicing concerns over noise and visual obstructions when it comes to wind turbines. Solar might have a better chance as it's quiet, and less visually intrusive since it mainly consists of photovoltaics installed on rooftops. In the case of SCE, the utility is being cautious, currently awarding only about 29 contracts for building and supplying such community-based projects until it can assess whether the method works based on the results of these current installations."One of SCE's objectives is to study the impact on local grid reliability, so that these distributed energy resources can be interconnected safely. Lessons learned during deployment of SCE's solar photovoltaic project will be shared with other utilities and the solar industry to foster similar efforts," the company said in a statement.

0 Vote(s)

Low-power versions of Intel's latest and greatest "Sandy Bridge" processors are populating the chipmaker's database, giving a pretty clear view of what kind of chips future thin MacBooks will use. MacBook Air(Credit:Apple)Thin, in this case, could be anything from a future 13-inch MacBook Pro (currently 0.95 inches thick) to an updated MacBook Air (currently 0.11 to 0.68-inches)--the latter expected in the summer timeframe. The "launch date" for the low-power chips highlighted in the graphic below is listed in Intel's database as "02/20/2011." It's important to remember that with the 32-nanometer Sandy Bridge generation, Intel combines the graphics function (previously a separate slice of silicon) with the main processor--a first for Intel in its Core series of products. So, a power-efficient Sandy Bridge processor rated at 17 watts is comparable to older, less-integrated Core 2 Duo 10-watt chips. Note that in Intel nomenclature, the wattage rating is called TDP, or thermal design power (see graphic). It's also worth pointing out that the most power-efficient Intel mobile processors have historically been called ULV, or ultra-low voltage. Which leads to a sore point for some prospective 2010 MacBook Air buyers (or current users). The 11.6-inch Airs use the old 10-watt ULV Core 2 Duo combined with Nvidia's GeForce 320M graphics-based chipset, as I've pointed out before. (Nvidia, by the way, does not disclose TDPs for its graphics chips and chipsets--I've asked them more than a few times to no avail.) The use of older Core 2 Duo chips is probably not an issue for the vast majority of people that buy the new Airs but for some (like me) it is a bit vexing that Apple essentially uses the same Intel processor technology as the original MacBook Air introduced three years ago. Low-power Sandy Bridge chips highlighted in black(Credit:Intel)But on a more positive note, these upcoming MacBooks are certainly something to look forward to. And Intel is just now getting ready to push these power-efficient versions of Sandy Bridge out the door in volume, packing goodies like Turbo Boost 2.0 and Hyper-Threading. And let me end with some wishful thinking: the sooner, the better--though I'm pretty sure Apple isn't listening.

0 Vote(s)

V3 Systems is one of 53 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Spring 2011 event taking place this week in Palm Desert, Calif. After our selection, the companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.According to a study by research firm Gartner, growth in the worldwide hosted virtual desktop market will accelerate through 2013, when it will reach 65 million units, up from some 500,000 units in 2009. V3 Systems, a company presenting at DEMO, wants to tap into this market with five drop-in virtual-desktop appliances it&'s announcing today.V3 claims its technology makes virtual machines faster than local desktops.Desktop virtualization, as an idea, detaches a computer&'s desktop environment from a physical machine, running over the Internet instead. This is important because the service allows you to access your computer using remote devices, for example from a cell phone or your own home computer.According to Chief Executive Peter Bookman, V3 Systems&' service will run virtual desktops at approximately half the cost of competitors&' services. One V3 Systems machine can run up to 300 desktops at the same time.&''We set out to transform the face of virtual desktop computing, and I believe we have done just that,&'' said Bookman.V3 Systems achieves these levels of performance by using a proprietary optimized software layer called V3OL, which works together with the virtual machine to optimize the platform for the fastest possible experience.V3 Systemsa4a4 competitors include Dell and HP.The company, which was founded in September of 2010, is led by Bookman, a serial entrepreneur that has spent his career involved in security solutions. V3 Systems has 24 employees and is headquartered in Salt Lake City.Next Story: Phocabulary helps improve your vocabulary with powerful images Previous Story: DEMO: Nimble Contact joins social customer relationship management racePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011, V3 Systems, Virtual Desktop PerformanceCompanies: V3 SystemsPeople: Peter Bookman Tags: DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011, V3 Systems, Virtual Desktop PerformanceCompanies: V3 SystemsPeople: Peter Bookman Have news to share Launching a startup Email: tips@venturebeat.comVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
