Bizness Apps CEO Andrew Gazdecki checked in to tell us that they&'ve joined the admittedly very crowded market of DIY iPhone app development platforms, but says they can do it from start to finish for just $39 a month, obviously a highly competitive price. The fledgling company has just scored an undisclosed round of seed funding from two angel investors, namely Build.com CEO Chris Friedland (see his reasons for investing here) and founder and CEO of Collegescheduler.com Robert Strazzarino.I&'m not entirely convinced every small or medium-sized business should have its own iPhone application, but hey, your mileage may vary. At a rate of $39 a month, it sure becomes affordable for a lot of companies that wouldn&'t otherwise spend money on native iOS applications.Obviously, the applications that one can build with Bizness Apps won&'t exactly become the most sophisticated ones available, but it&'s not that they come completely void of useful features, either. The company doesn&'t charge a setup fee, and gives business owners control over the creation, editing and management of their very own iPhone app.Every iPhone app is custom-made for businesses, submitted to the App Store and regularly updated with new features and improvements by the Bizness Apps team.Available features include turn-by-turn GPS directions, sharing capabilities that play nice with Facebook, Twitter and email clients, in-app messaging and push notifications, check-in and couponing capabilities, calendering options and more. The company makes money from monthly support and maintenance fees, but also offer custom iPhone app development and design services.
3VR, a provider of video recording and search technology, announced today that it has raised $17 million in its fifth round of funding led by Menlo Ventures. The company sells a number of video recorders that have scanning and recognition features built-in. Its products are mainly geared toward businesses looking to beef up their security. The software lets businesses review videos and use facial recognition and license plate recognition to track down criminals. The software can also count the number of people in a frame and detect slight changes in movement. 3VR&'s software is also open and allows for custom applications using its application programming interface (APIs).3VR&'s video recorders also sync up with a crime prevention network called CrimeDex. It&'s a network of around 1,000 law enforcement agencies and other organizations that aggregates data about known and suspected criminals. 3VR recorder owners can immediately upload video to the CrimeDex network and essentially crowdsource the detective work.Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp' Byers and DAG Ventures also participated in this latest funding round, and former SUN Microsystems executive Aisling MacRunnels is joining 3VR as its chief marketing officer, 3VR announced today. The San Francisco, Calif.-based company has around 600 clients, but plans on using the funding to expand internationally.3VR previously raised $42 million across four rounds of funding. Its last round, worth $12 million, closed just last year. The latest round brings its total funding up to $59 million.
Taavet Hinrikus, one of Skype&'s first employees, recently launched a new company called Transferwise, which enables cheap peer to peer currency exchange.Banks charge 3-6 percent more than the mid-market rates for currency exchange. Mid-market rates are halfway between the &''buy&'' and &''sell&'' rates from global currency markets. Transferwise cuts out the banks by matching your exchange with someoneelse&'s.Hinrikus is Estonian but lives in London. He says he often needed to transfer money home and was charged for currency exchange (GBP to EUR) as well as for the transfer itself. An informal market emerged where Estonians would exchange currencies between each other, and now Transferwise automates this process. As a user, you transfer the money you want to exchange to Transferwise&'s UK or Irish account. Your cash is matched with one or many other parties at the mid-market rate currently available on the currency markets. The cash is converted, for example, from British pounds to euros and transferred to the designated recipient. Transferwise charges 1 GBP for each transfer. No banks or brokers get acommissionon the exchange process. For example, if I wanted to send 1000 EUR from Amsterdam to the UK, Transferwise would save me around 40 EUR at the current exchange rates.Hinrikus calls Transferwise the &''Easyjet of currency transfer&'' (EasyJet is one of the biggest low-cost airlines in Europe).Currently, you can only exchange British pounds to euros, and vice versa, but Hinrikus told me that additional currencies will be added soon. The American dollar is one of the most requested currencies.Transferwise is based in London, has 5 employees and was founded in 2010. It is privately funded.Next Story: Pocketgear relaunches as Appia, becomes a mobile app store platform Previous Story: Rdio raises $17.5M to boost music-streaming servicePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: currency transferCompanies: Skype, transferwise Tags: currency transferCompanies: Skype, transferwiseCiara Byrne is a full time techie and part-time writer.
