(Credit:Google)Along with the major Android news from Mountain View, Calif., this week, Google has pushed version 9 of Chrome out of the beta nest. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, Chrome 9 stable marks the spread of WebGL support, debuts Google Instant in stable Chrome's search/location bar, and opens the Chrome Web Store for Chrome-based apps to all users.WebGL support has been available to Chrome users in the dev and beta channels for some time now. What it means for people on the stable branch is that they will now be able to check out 3D animations that are getting a power boost from their computer's hardware without requiring additional software. Google has put together a series of demos to show off what WebGL does. You can also check them out in other browsers that support WebGL, such asFirefox 4 beta andSafari. Though Opera is part of the group that's developing WebGL, Opera 11 doesn't yet support it. Microsoft has no plans for incorporating WebGL into Internet Explorer 9.Google Instant is the name given real-time updates that appear in your search results as you enter a query, changing on the fly. Changing "battle" to "battles" will see your search jump from war-related returns to Battlestar Galactica, depending on your browsing history. By making Instant available to all users from the location bar, Google is helping to ensure that users will begin seeing the location bar as a replacement for the search bar.The Chrome Web Store applies to the smallest portion of Google users, though it's still an interesting feature that's now made its way to all Chrome users. Best suited for the Chrome OS, the Chrome Web Store app-ifies the work of Web site publishers that have turned their sites into site-specific, Chrome-only apps.Of the nine security fixes that Google also announced in Chrome 9 stable, most notable was a "critical" fix that addressed an audio bug found by Reddit gamers playing Z-Type. The full changelog for Chrome 9 can be read here.

0 Vote(s)

A patent lawsuit brought against Apple, Google, and other prominent high-tech companies by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen earlier this year has been dismissed for being too vague.Microsoft co-founder Paul AllenCalling the allegations in the lawsuit "spartan," U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman said in dismissing the case that Allen had until December 28 to refile the case, according to a report on the Web site of The Wall Street Journal. Allen's team said it would meet the deadline and called the judge's ruling a "procedural issue."The lawsuit, filed by Allen's firm Interval Licensing, named Apple, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, AOL, eBay, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, and Staples as violating patents that Allen received while leading Interval Research, a company that is now out of business.Microsoft isn't among the defendants, even though it developed the Bing search technology. In a press release issued by Allen when the lawsuit was first filed, the patents were described as covering "fundamental web technologies first developed at Interval Research in the 1990s, which the company believes are being infringed by major e-commerce and web search companies."The patents being disputed in the lawsuit are:No. 6,263,507, "Browser for Use in Navigating a Body of Information, With Particular Application to Browsing Information Represented By Audiovisual Data."No. 6,034,652, "Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device."No. 6,788,314, "Attention Manager for Occupying the Peripheral Attention of a Person in the Vicinity of a Display Device."No. 6,757,682, "Alerting Users to Items of Current Interest."The case was filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, in Seattle.

0 Vote(s)

If theiPad is considered a mobile PC, then Apple is now the top mobile PC vendor in the U.S. and the third largest in the world thanks to its popular tablet, according to data released yesterday by DisplaySearch.Over the third quarter, Apple was able to grab a 12.4 share of mobile PC shipments around the world, with the iPad accounting for two-thirds (8 percent) of those devices, according to the new "DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report."(Credit:DisplaySearch)Of course, some may disagree with DisplaySearch calling the iPad a mobile PC and lumping it in with notebooks and Netbooks. Leaving out the iPad, Apple recently became the third largest overall PC vendor in the U.S. behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell, according to IDC. But DisplaySearch's numbers still point to the clear impact of the tablet on Apple's market share.Though other tech players have been busy launching and prepping their own tablet PCs, the iPad continues to dominate the landscape. Apple sold more than 3 million iPads in the first three months. Bernstein Research retail analyst Colin McGranahan projected in early October that Apple would capture around $12 billion in global iPad sales for the year, and almost $20 billion next year.Of all iPad shipments in the third quarter, 95 percent were directed to developed markets, mainly North America, according to DisplaySearch. McGranahan told CNET in October he believes 45 percent of the tablet's sales are in the United States. But the iPad's booming business in North America also points to a weakness in certain other countries, notably Japan, says DisplaySearch. The lack of language-specific content and apps has slowed the adoption of the tablet in normally tech-savvy Japan. The iPad may also face a tough road in less developed regions."On a global scale, the adoption of iPad is not without its challenges," Hidetoshi Himuro, director of IT market research at DisplaySearch, said in a statement. "Localized content in non-English speaking regions is sparse, and iPad owners must have a PC for downloading content from iTunes. As a result, penetration in developing regions will be slow."That could open opportunities for other tablet vendors to reach local consumers in different countries."As other players come to market with tablet PCs it will be interesting to see if they can move beyond the Western-centric nature of Apple's product and develop an infrastructure to support local needs, especially with the growth of consumer spending in China on personal computing devices," Chris Connery, vice president of large-format displays at DisplaySearch, said in a statement.Looking beyond the iPad at other mobile PC vendors, HP was still the global leader in the third quarter with a 17.3 percent share and 9.5 million mobile PCs shipped. But Acer trailed closely with a 16.5 share and 9.1 million units shipped.Overall, global shipments of mobile PCs (including tablets) hit 55 million in the third quarter, a gain of 19 percent from the prior year's quarter and the highest volume since DisplaySearch started tracking the market in 1999.

0 Vote(s)

Consumers'' interest in nature''s bounty shows no signs of slowing down in the coming years, fueling the urban gardening trend that''s greening up both private balconies and shared city spaces. As a way to help keep that interest burning bright, the Dutch Flower Council set up four giant, plant-filled displays throughout Paris this past weekend that gave visitors an immersive dose of green, oxygen-rich life.Between 26 and 28 November, passers-by in each of Gare Montparnasse, Place Saint Germain, Bercy Village and Place Colette were sure to notice a gigantic, transparent bubble installed there that was filled with a wide variety of indoor plants. Created by designer Amaury Gallon, the pop-up, self-enclosed gardens each featured a different array of plants: at Gare Montparnasse, for example, it was a jungle being represented, while Bercy Village''s garden was designed to be a4Apsychadelic.a4 Each walk-in bubble measured some 60 cubic meters and so was roughly big enough to accommodate just two visitors at a time, creating a private and intense sensory experience.Dubbed Ma Bulle, Ma Plante & Moi a4" or a4AMy Bubble, My Plant and Mea4 a4" the campaign no doubt delivered not just a break in consumers'' day while it was up, but also a reminder of the importance of flowers and plants in daily life. Which, of course, could well translate into increased sales of such items, particularly over the coming holidays. How could *your* brand deliver a little pop-up and immersive shopping inspiration this holiday season...
German business social networking site&nbsp'Xing has acquired Amiando, an online event management and ticketing services company, for around 10.3 million euros, as the &''German LinkedIn&'' attempts to engage its more than 10 million members more actively.Xing is the leading business social networking site in Germany and offers integrated business event services ranging from organization to marketing, billing, and execution.Amiando has been billed as the &''Eventbrite of Europe,&'' in that it offers online event management and ticketing services under a similar business model, where only a portion of its offerings are paid services but most are free for event planners.Amiando, which is available in German, French, English and Spanish, allows users to manage invitations, promote events online, handle the event registration process, host integrated billing services, and manage event entry. All of their tools are available online, are available immediately, and do not require any form of software installation. The company says it supported around 100,000 events in 2009 and will keep its current staff of 35.The acquisition is part of&nbsp'a larger push by business social networks to tempt their users into using the site for more than just creating an account and looking for jobs. Two years ago Xing acquired socialmedian, a service created by former Jobster chief executive Jason Goldberg to share and discuss news stories, as a way to help busy professionals find relevant news. The acquisition of Amiando is one more step in that &''full-service, one-stop&'' experience, as sites like Xing and LinkedIn strive to increase eyeballs, the time spent on site, as well as incentivize people to come back.a4AAcquiring Amiando gives Xing an opportunity to meet its membersa4a4 growing need for an integrated, comprehensive event registration and ticketing service. In 2009 alone, our members organized and marketed more than 150,000 events via the XING platform,&'' said Xing CEO Stefan Gross-Selbeck. &''From now on, we can offer them all of the services they need including efficient registration, ticketing and billing. This in turn allows us to tap into a highly lucrative and market currently experiencing rapid growth.a4Xing is paying 5.1 million euros initially, and an additional payment of up to 5.25 million euros will be made on March 31, 2013. The deal has several specific provisions, including that Amiando meet preset financial performance targets and that the current management team will stay at the company.Felix Haas will continue in his position as CEO at Amiando.Previous Story: Blog company Automattic has a massive audience, less-massive revenuePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Mergers and Acquisitions, social networking, Social networksCompanies: Amiando, Eventbrite, Jobster, linkedin, Socialmedian, xingPeople: Stefan Gross-Selbeck Tags: Mergers and Acquisitions, social networking, Social networksCompanies: Amiando, Eventbrite, Jobster, linkedin, Socialmedian, xingPeople: Stefan Gross-SelbeckRiley McDermid is a contributing reporter to VentureBeat.
This is more than a case of sour grapes. Time Warner CEO Jeffrey L. Bewkes belittles movie-rental company Netflix in an interview with The New York Times today. &''It&'s a little bit like, is the Albanian Army going to take over the world&'' he asked. &''I don&'t think so.&''This &''Albanian army&'' has transformed itself from a mailer of DVDs to a streaming media service and procuring the rights a4" for not much money &8212' to distribute all kinds of movies and television programs. It is a Wall Street and marketplace juggernaut.Netflix&'s success in streaming has taken some media companies by surprise. They weren&'t bothered when the company simply distributed movies on discs. DVD rentals cut into lucrative DVD sales, but that was going to happen anyway, and Netflix at least helped media companies make more money from rentals. The dynamic changed radically as Netflix moved into streaming. One deal it cut, with the Starz movie channel, has it paying a reported $25 million a year to stream movies from Sony and Disney. That&'s peanuts, especially given the much-lower cost structure Netflix enjoys by streaming rather than mailing. One analyst told the Times that Starz struck &''probably one of the dumbest deals ever&'' with Neflix. But that deal expires next year, and analysts presume that Starz a4" and others a4" will begin demanding much higher licensing fees from Netflix, perhaps amounting to 10 times what Netflix is paying now.At that point, Netflix will likely need to increase the all-you-can-eat, $8 monthly fee it charges streaming subscribers a4" possibly by a lot. Movie watchers might look back on this as a golden age, when they paid a few dollars a month for access to a cornucopia of movies and television. The situation highlights not only how content companies made bad deals, but how some of them completely missed the boat on streaming and utterly failed to recognize what Netflix was up to. Bewkes even admits as much. The Times&8216' Tim Arango paraphrases the CEO this way:Mr. Bewkes said decisions about deals that might have been made two years ago by a junior employee in a studioa4a4s digital division are now reaching his desk. For example, Mr. Bewkes himself approved a deal to allow Netflix to stream &''Nip/Tuck,&'' a drama produced by Warner Brothersa4a4 TV studio. It seems likely that over the next couple of years, as content companies negotiate with harder noses, Netflix&'s profit margins will appreciably decline. If enough air is let out of its stock price, last week&'s decision to list the company in the S&amp'P 500 index might look premature.Media companies, whose own stock prices look anemic next to Netflix&'s, are slowly realizing that online streaming of their content is an inevitability. There is also, of course, Hulu. And Time Warner&'s own HBO is rolling out a service, HBO GO, to give its cable subscribers access to content online. The owners of content hold an enormous amount of negotiating power when it comes to distribution. They just have to wield it effectively.[Image credit: Howard Brier]Next Story: CES preview: A bigger show with everything from connected TVs to smart grid monitors Previous Story: Dell salvages its 3Par fiasco, picks up cloud storage provider Compellent for $820MPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: media, streamingCompanies: Netflix, Starz, time warner hboPeople: jeffrey l bewkes Tags: media, streamingCompanies: Netflix, Starz, time warner hboPeople: jeffrey l bewkesVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
I posted a story earlier today about a cool company called Bonobos, which makes better-fitting hipster pants and just raised $18.5 million in funding. I did an extensive interview with the founder and CEO Andy Dunn last night and asked a lot of detailed questions about how the company was founded and the early days. At the end, I asked if there was anything else I didn&'t ask that I should know. His answers were reflected in the story I wrote and posted this morning. And then all Hell broke loose in Bonobos land. As far as I can tell, Dunn didn&'t say anything inaccurate, and so I didn&'t write anything inaccurate. But by all accounts the details of his co-founder&'s role in launching the company were glossed over. To Dunn&'s credit, he was the first one to call me this morning and ask me to make some changes to reflect what he&'d left out. I&'ve since updated the original story to explain that Brian Spaly was really the one who designed the pants in the early days, and the ideas for how to fix the problem with how pants fit were his. Afterwards the two had a falling out, the accounts of which are mixed and I won&'t hash out the he-said/he-said debate that I&'ve been dragged into today.None of this is uncommon when two friends or roommates start a company. Startups are pressure cookers, and in the early days there are daily forks in the road about which a lot of founders disagree. And it doesn&'t distract from how impressive of a job Dunn has done taking Spaly&'s designs and building them into a burgeoning brand that captured a large funding round from two of the most prominent VCs in the space. And Spaly himself has gone on to found a new company called Trunk Club. But what was uncommon about it was that Dunn didn&'t lay his cards on the table in the interview, and that I have been dragged into a nasty aftermath, instead of the two handling the disagreement between themselves before or after the fact.I bring this up to clear up any confusion, first of all. I&'m not comfortable continually tweaking a story that dramatically without an explanation, especially since a lot of our stories are syndicated right when they are published, and other things are written based on what we write. But I also bring it up, because it&'s an important lesson for every founder team. Lately, I&'ve been hearing some anecdotal accounts of co-founders doing everything with a handshake and having huge misunderstandings later on. Have we learned nothing from Facebook&'s lawsuitsEven if you are best friends and will be forever, formalize relationships on paper. And if one of you leaves the company, negotiate what that means, who is called a co-founder and who isn&'t, what each of you gets credit for and how you will handle it when someone asks you about it. Because if you are successful, someone will. Neither Dunn nor Spaly should have been surprised this would become an issue when the company was raising large amounts of money and seeking press as part of its customer acquisition strategy. &''Why&'d you start this company&'' shouldn&'t be an unanticipated question when you&'re pitching TechCrunch, and if your answer isn&'t the unvarnished truth, at least make sure you&'re all on the same page about what that answer is.

0 Vote(s)

Online game company Gazillion Entertainment has named a former Blizzard executive as its president and chief operating officer.San Mateo, Calif.-based Gazillion is one of the highest-profile online game companies in the industry with multiple studios working on massively multiplayer online games such as Lego Universe and Marvel Universe. The company recently raised $60 million in funding. So it represents one of the biggest bets that users will continue to play and pay for high-end online games even as free-to-play games become more popular.David Brevik, who ran Blizzard North at rival Activision Blizzard for seven years, will be the new No. 2 executive at Gazillion. He was previously studio director and project lead for Gazilliona4a4s Marvel Universe, which hasna4a4t launched yet. Before joining Gazillion, Brevik was the executive in charge of the Diablo and Diablo II games at Blizzard Entertainment. He also engineered and launched Blizzarda4a4s online gaming service, Battle.Net and was involved in the creation of World of WarCraft.Jeff Lind will replace Brevik as studio head for Secret Identity (formerly Gargantuan), the Gazillion subsidiary that is creating Marvel Universe. Lind was previously a development director for Electronic Arts and Turbine. Most recently he was development director of Marvel Universe. Gazillion also recently added Dan Fiden as vice president of publishing to focus on digital development and distribution. He previously worked at EA Pogo and Playfish.Gazillion was founded by Rob Hutter and raised a lot of money at the outset. It announced its Marvel deal in March, 2009. Other backers include Hearst Corp., Abu Dhabi Media Co., Revolution Ventures, and Pelion Ventures. These kinds of games take a lot of people and a long time to develop' many of them take a lot of funding and often go off schedule. The company has been quiet recently, but earlier this year it shut down a major game at its Slipgate Ironworks studio, headed by Doom co-creator John Romero. That led to some unspecified layoffs.Next Story: Q&038'A site Formspring scores $11.5M Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Range Fuels and Evergreen Solar lay off workers, China to double wind powerPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Marvel, Marvel UniverseCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Blizzard Entertainment, Gazillion EntertainmentPeople: David Brevik, Jeff Lind, Rob Hutter Tags: Marvel, Marvel UniverseCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Blizzard Entertainment, Gazillion EntertainmentPeople: David Brevik, Jeff Lind, Rob HutterDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
