W3C CEO Jeff Jaffe(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET )The World Wide Web Consortium announced 35 new members, a move it says signals growing interest in HTML and other Web technologies it standardizes.Among the new members are: China Unicom, Comcast, Facebook, LG Electronics, NEC Corporation, Netflix, SanDisk, Sony, and Zynga. This "more diverse community at W3C" will help bring Web standards to industries including mobile devices, television, publishing, and advertising, W3C CEO Jeff Jaffe said in a statement. "The immediate impact of new Web standards will result in more innovation, more powerful Web-based products and services, and economic opportunities for businesses and consumers alike."Jaffe, who's been at the organization's helm for just over a year, is hoping to raise the W3C's relevance after it lost touch with development of its core technology, Hypertext Markup Language, some years ago. To extend it, the W3C works in conjunction with another, less formal organization, the Web Hypertext Applications Technology Working Group (WHATWG), which had kept the HTML development alive when the W3C had been focusing instead on an incompatible and ultimately unsuccessful alternative, XHTML 2.0.One major change at W3C is the attempt to form faster-moving, easy-to-start groups to tackle new ideas while they're young.

0 Vote(s)

The Synology DS1511+ NAS server on CNET test bench.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)You won't find any network storage device that offers more space than the recently reviewed five-bay DS1511+ NAS server from Synology. This is the first NAS we've reviewed that has up to 15TB of storage space out of the box, by supporting the new 3TB hard drives. On top of that, when used with two DX510 expansion units, the server's storage space can be scaled up to be 45TB. With front-facing drive bays, it's easy to replace or add more hard drives to the systems.

0 Vote(s)

MasterCard is pulling the plug on payments to WikiLeaks, a move that will dry up another source of funds for the embattled document-sharing Web site, CNET has learned. There are some things you can&39't buy with MasterCard."MasterCard is taking action to ensure that WikiLeaks can no longer accept MasterCard-branded products," a spokesman for MasterCard Worldwide said today. That further limits the revenue sources for WikiLeaks, which has seen its finances systematically attacked in the last few days, as the Swiss authorities shut down a bank account used by editor Julian Assange, and PayPal permanently restricted the account used by the group. WikiLeaks has responded with an increasing number of fund-raising requests that urge supporters to "KEEP US STRONG."Assuming that MasterCard blocks payments, the only easy way to donate electronically would be with a Visa credit card through a Web page hosted by Iceland-based DataCell.com. Representatives of Visa did not respond to requests for comment from CNET today. (WikiLeaks also solicits payments sent through the U.S. mail.)MasterCard said it was cutting off payments because WikiLeaks is engaging in illegal activity. "MasterCard rules prohibit customers from directly or indirectly engaging in or facilitating any action that is illegal," spokesman Chris Monteiro said. The move to cordon off WikiLeaks comes as a noose appears to be tightening around the neck of editor Julian Assange, who is the target of an arrest warrant issued today in the United Kingdom, according to a BBC report. He is expected to appear in a U.K. court tomorrow.WikiLeaks previously was given the boot from its United States-based hosting services and domain name services. Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut said last Wednesday: "I call on any other company or organization that is hosting WikiLeaks to immediately terminate its relationship with them."Since then, U.S. politicians have stepped up their criticism of the document-sharing site, which has posted only about 1,000 of 251,000 State Department dispatches it says it possesses and has shifted to the WikiLeaks.ch domain. "I think the man is a high-tech terrorist," Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said yesterday, referring to Assange. "He has done enormous damage to our country."In addition, the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee wants WikiLeaks listed as a "terrorist" organization, which would prohibit U.S. banks from processing payments and make it a felony for anyone else to provide "material support or resources" to the group. CNET reported earlier today that some U.S. government employees are being blocked from visiting WikiLeaks' Web site and the myriad mirror sites that have sprouted in the last few days.

0 Vote(s)

eBay announced that it has acquired Berlin-based Brands4friends, a European online retailer that sells significantly discounted merchandise to its members, for $200 million. It&'s another move away from eBay&'s once-iconic auction service a4" but eBay has been distancing itself from auctions for some time now. For the first time in more than a year, eBay has not seen anysignificant revenue growth from its core marketplace business. That has left PayPal, which continues to grow at a healthy rate, as the flagship revenue stream for the once-leading online auction site, according to its most recent earnings reports released in October.eBay already allows European shoppers to buy directly from retail outlets through its outlet store. Rather than using auctions, the outlet store focuses on a &''daily deal&'' philosophy that sites like Groupon have taken advantage of with some pretty significant success. eBay is likely picking up Brands4friends to divert its 3.5 million members to eBay&'s own retail outlets, since Brands4friends offers a similar service.Daily deals in fashion also account for around 20 percent of all fashion sales in Europe, eBay said in its announcement today.eBaya4a4s auction activities have slowed to a crawl. Revenue from its auction site a4" which charges a fee to let users post things theya4a4d like to sell a4" was up a paltry 3 percent when compared to the same quarter last year, from $1.182 billion to $1.186 billion. The company has tried exploring a number of other revenue sources a4" such as picking up voice-over-Internet provider Skype and subsequently dumping the service. So far, most of the success has come from the company&'s online payment system PayPal and a stronger focus on retail. The turnaround in eBaya4a4s strategy began when John Donahoe took the reigns in 2008. eBay decided to shift its focus to PayPal and to model Amazona4a4s online marketplace model with eBaya4a4s a4Abuy it nowa4 option for most of its auctions. The Brands4friends acquisition seems to be just another nudge in the same direction.Next Story: AT&038'T snags more bandwidth for 4G: Buys Qualcomm&'s FLO TV wireless spectrum for $1.9B Previous Story: Tesla plans aggressive timeline for production of 2012 all-electric Model SPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: auctions, daily deals, retailCompanies: Amazon, brands4friends, eBay Tags: auctions, daily deals, retailCompanies: Amazon, brands4friends, eBayMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
WowWee showed off a projector that piggybacks on the popularity of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch gadgets. At the Consumer Electronics Show, the gadget was one of many that are part of Apple&'s multibillion-dollar peripheral economy.Even though Apple never makes a showing at CES and instead stages its own events, Apple&'s partners were there in force. The show had a special iLounge section where peripherals were on display. It may seem like these Apple peripherals are a dime a dozen, but they can sell a lot of units when they&'re made with the right amount of innovation. At the opening reception, WowWee showed the Cinemin Slice projector, which can take images, slide shows, and videos on your iOS devices (based on iPhone software) and display them on a wall, ceiling or screen. You put the iPad or other device into the dock and then start playing a video. It can project an image size of up to 60 inches diagonal and can be viewed from a range of about 10 feet. The projector uses Texas Instruments&' pico projector technology, which uses lots of little mirrors on a Digital Light Processing chip to create images. It&'s relatively bright at 16 lumens and has a touch-sensitive control interface. In the back is a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port, a VGA port, an A/V port. It can display images with WVGA quality, or 854 x 480 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It has 6-watt speakers and a headphone jack as well as an infrared remote control. Check out the demo by Adam from WowWee. It costs $429 and is available for pre-order. It ships at the end of January.Next Story: Jam-packed CES draws more than 140,000 visitors to Vegas Previous Story: Smart blood-pressure monitor reports your readings to iPhone (video)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CES, CES 2011, Cinemin Slice, Consumer Electronics ShowCompanies: Wowwee Tags: CES, CES 2011, Cinemin Slice, Consumer Electronics ShowCompanies: WowweeDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
