Walgreens will host eVgo stations at 18 of its Houston-area stores.(Credit:eVgo)The eVgo chain of charging stations for electric vehicles will have its official coming-out party today at a Dallas event whose speakers include Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The first U.S. commercial chain of charging stations, eVgo (pronounced ee-vee-go), is set to announce that it will have a total of 60 electric-vehicle charging stations in place by Labor Day. It is owned by NRG EV Services, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, one of the largest electricity providers in Texas.NRG EV Services and eVgo will also likely announce their specific pricing structure and plans for station customers. So far, eVgo has said it plans to offer a subscription service through which customers get unlimited access to its stations for a set monthly fee, and it is developing a smartphone app that will alert users to nearby charging stations. The eVgo network already announced in November that it had snagged some leading Texas retailers as partners to provide space in their parking lots for charging stations. The Walgreens pharmacy chain will host 18 of the rapid-charging stations at its Houston-area stores. Other partners include electronics retailer Best Buy, stores in the HEB supermarket chain, and the airport parking company Park N' Fly.Related links &149' Texas to be U.S. transportation testing ground &149' Better Place unveils plans for 9 stations in Israel &149' Fast EV charging stations plug inThe eVgo network will consist of two types of charging stations: 480-volt DC rapid chargers, which take about 30 minutes to recharge an electric vehicle, and 240-volt Level 2 chargers, which take about four hours to recharge a vehicle. The eVgo "Freedom Stations" will be open 24 hours a day, and offer both types of chargers. Twenty-five of those will be open in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and 35 in the Houston area by Labor Day. A total of 70 will be in place in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area and 50 in the Houston area by 2012, according to NRG.Electronics retailer Best Buy will soon offer eVgo charging at some of its Texas locations.(Credit:eVgo)Eventually, eVgo also plans to roll out "convenience stations" that will be limited to 240-volt Level 2 chargers, and only open for service during the business hours of the retailer hosting the station. It's not unusual for Perry to speak at such an event. In addition to his support for the coal and petroleum industries, Perry has also been a very vocal proponent of green-energy projects, and embraced wind energy as an electricity source for Texas. While Texas currently only gets a small percentage of its power from wind, it actually has the most wind power capacity of any U.S. state, according to the latest report from the American Wind Energy Association. Texas is also home to the largest wind complex in the U.S., a $1 billion project that includes 627 wind turbines across 100,000 acres over four Texas counties. It has a capacity of 781.5 megawatts. The state is also no stranger to experimental transportation projects. Texas is currently the country's test subject for a series of telematics transportation technologies being rolled out by IBM in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The projects consists of a GPS-enabled communication network similar to Wi-Fi that allows vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

0 Vote(s)

Warner Music Group is reportedly entertaining acquisition offers even as the third-largest record company continues to pursue its own acquisition of troubled rival label EMI. The New York Times reported that after being approached by buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Warner Music hired Goldman Sachs to seek out buyers. Instead of selling to KKR, Warner's management wanted to see what kind of price it could get on the open market. Warner Music is home to such artists as Green Day, Faith Hill, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. According to the Times' story, Warner's private-equity investors want Warner to either place bet big on music by buying EMI, the smallest of the four major labels or "cash out." Terra Firm, the company that acquired EMI in 2007, could default on its loan from Citigroup and soon be forced to turn over control of EMI. The Internet age has not been kind to the top labels. Overall U.S. music sales shrank last year more than 2 percent while digital sales grew by only 1 percent according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sales have shrunk four consecutive years, and many in the music industry have placed much of the blame on illegal file sharing. Virgin Mega Store closed its stores in the United States nearly two years ago. (Credit:Greg Sandoval/CNET)While many skeptics say there isn't credible proof that piracy has contributed to the music industry's woes, there is certainly plenty of anecdotal evidence that the music sector is melting before our eyes. We could very well see EMI, which produced the Beatles, absorbed by one or more of its competitors. Retail brick-and-mortar music chains, such as Tower Records and Sam Goody have shut down. Wal-Mart Stores has dramatically cut back space dedicated to selling CDs. Sony announced last week that in March, the company will shut down one of its two remaining CD-manufacturing plants in the United States and lay off 300 workers.

0 Vote(s)

The updated version of iDOS now comes with a virtual game pad for playing one of the six included shareware titles.(Credit:FAST Intelligence)The controversial iOS app that let users run an emulated version of the DOS prompt has returned to the App Store, more than two months since it was pulled by Apple. The app, which reappeared earlier this morning, has come back missing one key feature--the capability to use the file-sharing tool built into iTunes. This is what allowed users to add executables--including a full-blown Windows installer--into the app, turning theiPhone andiPad into nearly workable PC emulators. To make up for this deficiency, iDOS' developer Chaoji Li has added six shareware games from 3D Realms as well as built a simplified game launcher that will load up any of those titles without the user having to peck out commands on the virtual keyboard. And for those who do not want to use the virtual keyboard, and use the full real estate of the screen, the app now supports Bluetooth keyboards, however this only works in text-based games, Li says.Users who downloaded the app back when it was first available will get a notification to update from within the App Store. Li is urging users who want to get some of the new features, but who want to be able to come back to an earlier version of the app to retain the file-sharing feature, to first make a backup of the app file.Update at 1:16 p.m. PDT: iOS games blog Touch Arcade points out that there's still a way to add files to the application using Macroplant's cross-platform iPhone Explorer utility. This solution does not require jailbreaking of the iOS device, though it may lead to the app getting yanked again.

0 Vote(s)

Contradicting several recent reports that Apple is planning a smaller iPhone, the New York Times is now reporting that, while Apple is looking for ways to make the iPhone cheaper, it is not pursuing a smaller version of the device. The paper&'s sources say that Apple engineers are too busy finishing up the iPhone 5, which is expected to debut this summer, to be worrying about an iPhone Mini. One source says that an iPhone Mini wouldn&'t be cheaper to manufacture and could adversely affect apps written for the existing iPhone&'s 3.5-inch screen.Instead, Apple will continue to make the previous iPhone generations a low-cost alternative to the newest model. This time around, Apple may also change some internal hardware to drive down the price of older models, according to the NYT&'s source. Such a move would still allow Apple to compete with increasingly cheap Android devices.Apple currently offers the 8 gigabyte iPhone 3GS for $49 with a two-year contract. That model, the third in the iPhone&'s lineage, could potentially be offered for free with a contract following the release of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4 could drop in price by half to $99.The NYT&'s source confirms previous reports that Apple will likely make its MobileMe service, which currently costs $99 a year, completely free. The service could serve as a digital file locker for users to stream their music, pictures, and potentially even video. There&'s also been speculation that Apple is aiming for an iPhone that can only stream media, but we think that&'s crazy.Calling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight!
Broadcom has teamed up with Chinese firm 3DiJoy to support its system for motion-sensing gaming on set-top boxes, enabling users to play games in their living room with little extra hardware costs. The companies are billing the system as an inexpensive way to add gaming to an existing set-top box. Broadcom&'s set-top box chips will integrate Bluetooth wireless network technology that can connect to a gesture-based remote control with Shanghai-based 3DiJoy&'s motion-sensing technology. The technology paves the way for motion-sensing game systems to spread far beyond the game console to ordinary set-top boxes that handle functions such as digital video recording or cable TV access. That in turn could lead to a much larger market for video games in places where people can&'t afford or aren&'t allowed to buy game machines. In China, for instance, game consoles are still banned.Broadcom is the leader in chips for set-top boxes. The company makes a BCM7231 IP STB system-on-a-chip device that can power a set-top. That chip will integrate a Bluetooth wireless gaming solution that can connect with a motion-sensing remote (pictured) that uses 3DiJoy&'s technology. That system could work with games downloaded into a set-top via the internet. The Broadcom chip can run 3D graphics-based games that use the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics standard. The system is being targeted at users in the U.S., Latin America, Central America, and China, said Li Hsu, chief executive of 3DiJoy. Dan Marotta, executive vice president of Broadcom&'s communications group, said that service providers can now add new revenue-generating entertainment services to their existing set-top box services. The companies are showing the solution this week at a couple of trade shows: the China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition in Beijing and the IP&amp'TV World Forum in London. The system can be used for both video games and educational apps. Other apps such as search and audio streaming can also be added easily to a system using the Broadcom and 3DiJoy solutions.China&'s internet protocol TV (video delivered via web) market has more than 8 million subscribers and could grow to more than 12 million in 2011, according to market researcher Streaming Media Network. The 3DiJoy system competes directly with the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360, and the Sony PlayStation Move. Kinect-like technology will also be available soon on PCs.Broadcom, based in Irvine, Calif., had 2010 revenue of $6.8 billion.Next Story: Is a &''huge wave&'' of M&038'As, financing deals about to hit Silicon Valley Previous Story: Facebook lets users check-in to eventsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: motion-sensingCompanies: 3DiJoy, Broadcom Tags: motion-sensingCompanies: 3DiJoy, BroadcomDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
