<description><![CDATA[(Credit:Joseph Kaminski/CNET)One of our goals here in CNET Labs is to keep PC benchmark testing current. This does not come without its challenges. One good example of the process is our recent work on a new Photoshop CS5 benchmark. First, a little background. We are sometimes asked why we don't use off-the-shelf benchmark apps such as 3DMark or Sysmark. These software packages are popular benchmarking tools, but they're synthetic benchmarks, in that they represent performance in a series of proprietary tasks, not commonly used consumer software. Those kinds of tests certainly have value--for example, we currently use Cinebench 11.5 to test raw multicore CPU performance. We're also evaluating 3DMark 11 as a possible addition to our existing gaming tests. However, instead of off-the-shelf testing, we generally prefer to create our own benchmarks that incorporate mainstream applications representing real-world usage. In doing so, we hopefully give you a better idea of how well these systems perform with apps that are at least close to what the average consumer would use. Part of all benchmark development involves balancing the desire to keep software tests updated against the stability of the test and the ability to compare with previous results. (Credit:Adobe)Here's the latest example. We've been using Adobe's Photoshop CS3, which is now two versions behind the latest version of Photoshop. We had skipped a generation, PhotoshopCS4, for a few reasons. Only the Windows version had 64-bit support, which would make cross-platform comparisons with Macs less relevant. We also learned from Adobe that the company was accelerating the release of Photoshop CS5 (which eventually came out in the first half 2010), so any CS4 benchmark would be short-lived. Over the past several months, we've developed a version of our Photoshop test using CS5, and we're currently finalizing it for use in CNET reviews. When developing any new benchmark test, either for a new app or an updated version of an existing app, it can take several months before the test is ready to roll out across our desktop and laptop reviews. We can't transition to the next version until we know it works on all the different types of systems we get in, and until we're confident with the results, and we always make sure product testing takes precedence over test development, so new products can get tested and reviewed in a timely manner. So, until we have a substantial data set of results on high-end, mid, and low-end systems, we double-test with both the new and older benchmarks. One concern when creating these tests is to make it challenging enough for a high-end system but also able to run on a low-end PC reasonably well. The benchmark has to run at least three times and generate scores within 5 percent of one another, or the entire process must be done again. We also have to be able to reliably automate the test, which enables us to be much more productive and to test multiple systems at once. Citing &quot;low usage, the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real-estate Web sites, and the infrastructure challenge posed by the impending retirement of the Google Base API,&quot; Brian McClendon, vice president of Google Earth and Maps, said today that the listings would disappear by February 10. For a few years Google has allowed Google Maps users to search for both rental and for-sale listings in a given area, relying on listings uploaded by real-estate companies.Search Engine Land notes the comment of a U.K. real-estate company, PropertyPals.com, which said it saw &quot;minimal traffic from maps&quot; during its participation in the service, despite Google's attempts to promote it across search results pages. But many top-tier real-estate companies simply didn't participate in that process, preferring to attract users to their own sites during the initial shopping process by simply relying on regular Google searches. McClendon didn't rule out an eventual return to this type of service, but Google will first have to figure out a way to allow the easy upload of real-estate listings now that Google Base has been dropped in favor of Google Shopping APIs, which don't support listing types such as real estate or jobs. The larger challenge might be convincing the real-estate industry that they would see increased sales from allowing their listings to appear on Google Maps. <description><![CDATA[When a former Yahoo employee leaked a list of products that the troubled company plans to shut down, many people were up in arms over the fact that one of the items on the list was Delicious--a social-bookmarking company Yahoo acquired in 2005 that still has a handful of loyal users.But Delicious says it plans to find an exit strategy from Yahoo, not shut down.&quot;We are not shutting down Delicious,&quot; a post on the Delicious blog read. &quot;While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo, we believe there is [an] ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.&quot;The wording of the post does not make it clear as to whether Delicious was facing the threat of a shutdown or whether Yahoo's plan had been to sell it all along. <description><![CDATA[Hotmail is rolling out a new platform this morning called Active Views that lets users surf through certain Web sites from inside of e-mail messages.But it's not just any message where this functionality is enabled. Instead, Microsoft has partnered with specific companies as part of the launch to give users a way to do common tasks like searching and account management. Some of the first ones on that list are Orbitz and Monster.com, with Netflix and LinkedIn soon to follow.When a Hotmail user gets an e-mail from one of these companies, they'll be able to use parts of that site from right inside the message. For something like Orbitz, the change means users who get something like a travel sale alert, could then do a search for a trip, and have the results page load up within the message frame. Previously this would have jettisoned users out of Hotmail and into another tab or window. In a post on Microsoft's Windows Team Blog announcing the feature, Hotmail Group Program Manager Dick Craddock said this functionality is aimed at making HTML-based e-mails less static, and had not been added in the past due to security concerns. &quot;There has simply been no way to run JavaScript code within e-mail messages in such a way that it's isolated and not allowed to do malicious things on your computer,&quot; Craddock said. The way the company has gotten around the security issue has been to create a white list of senders that can run code inside of messages, as well as partnering with e-mail service providers like Responsys to make sure Active Views-enabled messages move past spam filters. Yahoo and Google have offered similar special treatment to senders in their Web mail services. Google less so, simply by flagging e-mails from senders like PayPal and eBay to help users determine real e-mails from phishing schemes. Yahoo, however, has had a program running for the past year and a half that puts some application functionality inside of Yahoo Mail, so that users don't need to leave the in-box experience to take care of some everyday tasks. Microsoft says Active Views is being introduced as part of a pilot with just a handful of companies, but it will eventually open it up to anyone. As part of the deal, Kaffee, a retired airline pilot, traded in his old Toyota Prius at the Gearhart Chevrolet Dealership in Denville, N.J., to get the 2011 Chevy Volt.GM said Kaffee is just one of 360 customers who will receive Chevy Volts this week. In addition to the New York metropolitan area, Volts straight from the company's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant are also being delivered this week to dealerships in California, and the Austin, Texas., and Washington, D.C., areas, according to GM.The Chevy Volt has garnered much attention in the last year, not only for its innovative new car, but also for its mileage claims. GM initially claimed that the Volt got the equivalent of 230 miles per gallon for city driving. The car ultimately received a 93 miles per gallon equivalent (mpge) rating for combined city and highway driving in all electric mode, and 37 mpge in gas-only mode, according to the new car ratings system developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). GM's news follows Nissan's announcement last week that it had delivered the first Nissan Leaf to its first customer. Olivier Chalouhi, founder and CEO of the start-up Fanhattan, and wife Jan received their Nissan Leaf at the North Bay Nissan of Petaluma dealership in California. Chalouhi did not have a car on trade-in, as his previous mode of transport was an electric bicycle. Chalouhi was the first person to receive a Nissan Leaf because he was &quot;the first person in the United States to place a Nissan Leaf order,&quot; according to Nissan.The Nissan Leaf has received an EPA combined rating of 99 mpge.Nissan has said that its first round of deliveries will be to customers in Southern California, Arizona, Oregon, Seattle, and Tennessee.<br/><br/>0 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[The Dragon spacecraft from SpaceX.(Credit:SpaceX)SpaceX has won the first-ever license from the Federal Aviation Administration allowing a private-sector spacecraft to re-enter Earth's atmosphere.The California company says that next month it plans to launch its unmanned Dragon spacecraft into Earth orbit, where it will be traveling at speeds of greater than 17,000 miles per hour. With the one-year FAA license in hand, SpaceX will also be able to bring the spacecraft back home a few hours later and have it splash down in the Pacific Ocean, where it will be recovered.The event will mark the first commercial launch paired with an officially sanctioned re-entry. The company said in its announcement yesterday that it will also be &quot;the first attempt by a commercial company to recover a spacecraft reentering from low-Earth orbit.&quot; It has only been performed by the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, India, and the European Space Agency, SpaceX said.The unmanned SpaceX mission, set for December 7, is a precursor to coordinated NASA and SpaceX efforts to eventually provide commercial trips to the International Space Station with cargo and crew, according to the FAA. NASA's space shuttles, which have been performing that mission along with related flights by Russia spacecraft, are scheduled to go into retirement early next year.  &quot;NASA wishes SpaceX every success with the launch,&quot; NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden said in a statement.The Dragon spacecraft will lift off atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. <description><![CDATA[The Sylvania LED designed for general lighting, which gives off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent and uses 12 watts.(Credit:Osram Sylvania)The battle to unseat the popular 60-watt incandescent bulbs with more efficient LEDs is moving to retail outlets.Osram Sylvania today said that home improvement store Lowes will carry Sylvania's general-purpose LED bulb, which gives off as much light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb and uses 12 watts.The Ultra A-Line bulb will be available online this month and in all Lowe's stores by the second quarter of next year. The price will $39.98, according to Osram Sylvania. Home Depot is offering a 60-watt replacement LED from Philips for $39.97.LED bulbs in this category are significant because millions of 60-watt incandescents and equivalent compact florescent bulbs are sold every year. Also, these latest LEDs, which give off light more evenly the spotlight LEDs, are designed for general lighting, such as desk lamps and overhead fixtures.The Sylvania Ultra A-Line 12-watt LED, which is dimmable, gives off 810 lumens of light, slightly more than the competing bulb from Philips. The color temperature is 2,700 Kelvin, which means it will have yellow color similar to an incandescent. The color rendering index, a measurement of accuracy, is 90. The rated life is 25,000 hours.Osram Sylvania intends to make a brighter LED which would give off as much light as a 75-watt incandescent which will be available in 2011, according to a company representative.Lowe's already sells LEDs from Sylvania, including a 40-watt equivalent in the G25 globe shape for $30.87. In addition to making brighter lights, manufacturers are seeking to ramp up the volume of LED bulb production, which is expected to lower the price of general-purpose LED bulbs. Some lighting company executives forecast that within two years, LED bulbs in the 800 lumen category will cost less than $10. <description><![CDATA[There is definitely some bad blood between Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Wikileaks, the controversial organization which posted thousands of pages of classified Iraqi War documents.  On the Charlie Rose last night, towards the end of his interview, Wales says, &amp;''If I had some information, the last thing I would ever do with it is send it to Wiikileaks.&amp;''  He prefaced that remark by noting that he has &amp;''mixed feelings about Wikileaks.&amp;''  People with information about wrongdoing in open societies should have the opportunity to make that information public.  His concern is the way that Wikileaks chose to do that without regard for the safety of people &amp;''who are not the wrongdoers.&amp;''   &amp;'' I think they should be slower in releasing things,&amp;'' he says.So what would Wales do with that information He would send it to the New York Times or some &amp;''responsible&amp;'' journalistic enterprise. <description><![CDATA[Life is good for the reigning Android hardware king Samsung.  The company released its record-breaking earnings report (PDF link) for the fourth  quarter of 2010 yesterday, revealing that it sold 2 million Galaxy Tab  tablets and 80 million phones.Samsung announced in early December that it sold 1 million Galaxy Tabs in its first two months on the market. The 2 million number tells us that sales for the tablet  just about doubled in December. The company says its phone sales were  driven in large part by its successful high-end Galaxy S line, which sold 10 million units last year.  Phone sales in the quarter were up 17 percent from a year ago, and they  reached a total of 280 million units sold for 2010, a 23 percent  increase.The  strong fourth quarter helped Samsung to surpass many of its previous  fiscal records. For 2010, the company saw total revenue of $139 billion,  $14 billion in net income $15.5 billion in operating profit ($2.7  billion of which came from the last quarter).Samsung also shipped 12.72 million flat panel TVs in the fourth quarter, a 10 percent increase from the previous quarter.The  company came out of nowhere last year with its slick Galaxy S phones,  which were released in the US across all major cellphone carriers. Now  Samsung has to fight to keep its position as the top Android phone  manufacturer as we begin to see an onslaught of 4G devices from competitors with powerful  dual-core CPUs. After the super angels invest, Martino said startups often reach a point where they need a small amount of cash to keep going, but they&amp;'re not really ready to raise a large second round.At that point, two things can happen. The company can raise a larger round from a traditional venture firm at a high valuation, meaning that it needs a home-run acquisition or initial public offering in order to pay off. Or the company might be a4Aprematurely shot in the heada4 because the initial investor wona4a4t support it. As an illustration of the issue, Martino pointed to investor Mike Maples Jr.a4a4s story about investing in Chegg (a textbook rental startup that has since turned into a home run).With Bullpen, on the other hand, a startup could raise a $2 to $3 million a4ARational (Series) B,a4 rather than a larger $6 or $8 million round. That gives the company more time to prove its mode, then it can raise that bigger round if it wants to (and then go for the home run), or it can look for a small-but-still-lucrative acquisition. <description><![CDATA[Nvidia is reportedly racking up design wins for its Tegra 2 chip set for smartphones and tablets, with many of the devices expected to be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show.If the rumors are true, it&amp;'s about time. Last year, Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang declared 2010 to be &amp;''the year of the tablet.&amp;'' Only it turned out to be the year of the iPad, which did Nvidia no good because Apple used its own A4 chip in that machine.But analysts say that both LG and Samsung are placing considerable orders for Nvidia&amp;'s dual-core Tegra 2 chips and will display new models at CES, which starts on Jan. 4 in Las Vegas. The upcoming Motorola Android 3.0 tablet for Verizon, code-named Honeycomb, also reportedly uses the Tegra 2. Nvidia has scheduled a press conference for noon on Jan. 5 at the show.It&amp;'s about time for Nvidia to get some big payoff from the Tegra investments, which represent a major diversification opportunity to help Nvidia spread beyond PC graphics. Overall, Nvidia hasn&amp;'t had great luck with its customers for Tegra. Microsoft&amp;'s Kin phone and its Zune music player used the original Tegra chips, but they turned out to be duds. This isn&amp;'t all Nvidia&amp;'s fault, as Apple&amp;'s rivals have had an awful time coming up with designs that can challenge the dominance of the iPad.Glen Yeung, an analyst at Citigroup, says that Samsung has placed a sizable order with Nvidia for Tegra 2 chips in the first half of 2011, for both cell phones and tablets. Analyst Ambrish Srivastava said the next Samsung Galaxy Tab will likely use Tegra 2 as well. Google has also reportedly made Tegra 2 into part of the reference platform &amp;8212' or standard design &amp;8212' for Android 3.0 devices.Mike Rayfield, general manager of Nvidia&amp;'s mobile business, said in a recent blog post that variations on the super phone, or a smartphone on steroids, will be prominent at CES this year.&amp;''Ia4a4d bet that CES 2011 will usher in the year that fully fledged superphones hit the market and really take off, building on the first stirrings of the concept that Google introduced with its phone,&amp;'' Rayfield said. &amp;''The term superphone began to simmer earlier this year.&amp;''He added, &amp;''The first attempts came with displays greater than four inches' a camera of five-plus megapixels for impressive photos and video' accelerometers, and even GPS. <description><![CDATA[For a company which has only been in existence since June this year, Danish startup Abeo has been racking up the awards for rethinking an everyday construction material &amp;8212' concrete.The company won Denmark&amp;'s Cleantech Open competition and will represent the company at tomorrow&amp;'s Cleantech Open Globals Ideas competition. It was recently chosen as one of the Nordic regions&amp;'s top 10 startups by the Nordic Venture Forum. Abeo&amp;'s technology will also be used in a new building from BIG,the architecture firm of rock-star architect Bjarke Ingels .So what&amp;'s all the fuss about Abeo is licensing a new method of constructing concrete buildings which can reduce cost and Co2 emissions by up to 50 percent. The company calls such buildings super-light structures. The super-light structure technique was invented by a Danish professor called Kristian Hertz and first published in the delightfully named a4AMagazine of Concrete Researcha4 in 2009.Most modern buildings are constructed using heavy concrete and steel reinforcement. Super-light structures use a skeleton of medium to high strength concrete and a stabilizing outer layer of lightweight concrete. The strong concrete is load-bearing.The lightweight concrete creates the outer shape and while stabilizing and protecting against impact and fire. Because lightweight concrete weighs 3 to 5 times less than ordinary concrete, it reduces the total weight of the concrete structure by approximately 50 percent.The usage of concrete has a major environmental impact. According toa report from Lux Research, cement production consumesroughly 3 percent of the worlda4a4s primary energy, including nearly 10 percent of the primary energy used for global industry. In total, cement productionaccounts for roughly 6 percent of global carbon emissions.Based on super-light structures, Abeo offers another technique called pearl-chain reinforcement that enables easy and fast construction of curved shapes without the use of scaffolding.
