For $20, you may be able to take your phone number with you to Google Voice.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)One of Google Voice's stickiest conditions is beginning to unstick, thanks to a new, very quietly rolled-out feature that lets you port your own phone number to Google Voice. If you see this in your Google Voice account settings, you may be eligible for porting.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)Previously, signing on to Google Voice meant searching for a new Google Voice number to pass along to (and confuse) family and friends. A call forwarding feature let you give Google Voice the blessing to handle the voice mail attached to your mobile number, but porting was frustratingly not an option, to the chagrin of all of us CNET users as well. Now, you may see the words "Change/Port" in the Settings of your Google Voice account. Click it to begin the process of entering your beloved number, and Google will assess if it's eligible for porting to Google Voice. Unlike the rest of Google's telephony service, porting isn't free, and you can only make payment on the $20 fee through Google Checkout.Just keep in mind that jumping ship on any current mobile contract will incur your carrier's wrath in the form of early termination fees. Therefore, port wisely, young Googlers. [Via Engadget]

0 Vote(s)

CEO Steve Jobs at an Apple event in October to introduce Mac OS X Lion.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Apple's Steve Jobs will be taking a medical leave of absence for the second time in two years but will remain CEO of the company, involved in strategic decision-making.Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook will assume responsibility for the company's day-to-day operations, amid continuing investor concerns over Apple's plans for eventual transition in the corner office. nlrText { float: right' width: 170px' padding: 5px' margin: 10px 10px 10px 0' font-family: verdana' font-size: 10px' border: 1px solid 999' background: FFFFEF' } nlrText h4{display: block' font-size: 1.4em' padding: 0' margin: 0' color: 900' } The Steve Jobs eraSome notable moments for Jobs and his companies over the years. 1976Co-founds Apple with Steve Wozniak. 1984Apple introduces the Mac. 1985CEO John Sculley engineers Jobs' ouster from Apple. 1985Founds Next Computer (later becomes Next Software). 1986Buys computer graphics division of LucasFilm, to be renamed Pixar. 1996Returns to Apple as adviser when Apple buys Next Software 1997Named interim CEO of Apple. 2001Apple introduces iTunes software and the iPod' the iTunes store follows in 2003. 2005Disney buys Pixar' Jobs becomes largest shareholder. 2007Apple introduces the iPhone. 2009Takes 6-month leave of absence for medical reasons. 2010Apple introduces the iPad. January 2011Takes medical leave of absence. The stock market is closed today for a federal holiday. Apple is scheduled to report its first-quarter fiscal 2011 earnings tomorrow after 1 p.m. PT.Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, took a leave in the first half of 2009 to deal with issues related to his medical treatments. In announcing that hiatus, he said he would step away for six months, and he returned to full-time work on schedule. This time around, the 55-year-old Jobs did not give a time frame for his return. Here's the text of his e-mail to employees, provided by Apple this morning:Team,At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple's day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.Steve In January 2009, Jobs said that he was suffering from a hormone imbalance that was impeding his body's ability to absorb certain proteins. In April of that year, Jobs underwent liver transplant surgery, and he returned to work by early July. Cook was the one to step in to run the day-to-day operations of the company during that leave as well, guiding the company through the launch of theiPhone 3GS, as well as some of the final stages of the production of theiPad.In the months preceding that announcement two years ago, Jobs' health had been the topic of intense speculation. In an appearance at the company's 2008 Worldwide Developers Conference, Jobs appeared to have lost a considerable of weight. Apple and Jobs rebuffed any questions on the matter, calling his health a "private matter."No such speculation led up to today's announcement. Jobs has made regular appearances in support of new Apple products, most recently at an October event introducing the latest MacBook Air andMac OS X Lion. He was supposed to appear at an event in San Francisco this week with Rupert Murdoch to announce the launch of The Daily, an iPad-only newspaper, but the event was rescheduled late last week. Though his immediate health was no longer a major focal point with the press or the public, the topic of who will take over for Jobs at Apple remains a hot one with investors. Many investors feel that Jobs can never truly be replaced as CEO, since his vision and persona are so fundamentally linked with the company, but Apple has been criticized for not publicly grooming a successor. Apple COO Tim Cook at the company&39's October event(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET) Just recently it came to light that Apple's board of directors had fielded a stockholder request that Apple make its succession plan public knowledge. Apple refused, saying that privately there is an established a plan in place and that disclosing it to the public and competitors would damage the company's ability to retain and recruit top executive talent. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Jobs was absent from Apple after a conflict with the board over leadership style. Since his return to Apple in 1997, Jobs has rebuilt the company he co-founded with Steve Wozniak, taking it from near bankruptcy to the most influential consumer electronics company in the world. With more than $50 billion in the bank, Apple now has the second-highest market capitalization in the world, behind ExxonMobil. Beyond the Mac lineup of desktops and laptops, Jobs has transitioned the company into the entertainment business with iTunes and the iPod, and into a leading mobile phone maker with the iPhone. Last year, Apple introduced the touch-screen iPad, which has created a third mobile device category and a success that all of Apple's competitors have recently flocked to try to reproduce. Cook capably handled the reins during Jobs' 2009 leave of absence. While Jobs was away, Apple delivered two back-to-back blow-out quarters, as well as an updated iPhone OS and new iPhone hardware. Under Cook, Apple also put the finishing touches on the company's new iPods, MacBooks, and Mac OS, which were released shortly after Jobs' return to the helm in late June.He was rewarded handsomely for keeping Apple on track, getting a bonus of $5 million plus 75,000 stock options for his work filling in for Jobs. He is Jobs' most trusted executive, handling all earnings calls with Wall Street investors and analysts for the last few years, and has had an increasingly larger role at major product introductions. Cook most recently appeared on behalf of Apple last week alongside Verizon executives in New York City to announce the first iPhone that works on Verizon's network. Cook, 50, joined Apple in 1998 and was promoted to COO in 2004. It was at Cook's behest that Apple pulled out of building its own products and moved to contract manufacturers like Foxconn and others, reducing the company's inventory and drastically improving its margins.Editors' note: This story was updated several times with background and additional information, most recently at 8:10 a.m. PT.
Ford CEO Alan Mulally introduces the Ford Focus Electric.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Ford CEO Alan Mulally introduced the automaker's first-ever zero-emissions vehicle Friday in his keynote address at the 2011 CES convention in Las Vegas: The Focus Electric, a new version of the little sedan which Ford says offers better mileage than the Chevy Volt and charges twice as fast as the Nissan Leaf."This is our first ever gas-free, zero carbon dioxide emissionscar," Mulally said. "(It's) a great step forward in electrification, and part of an even more comprehensive plan for bringing affordable fuel efficiency technology to millions of people around our world."It was Mulally's third consecutive time giving a keynote talk at theCES trade show' this time, there was huge applause when Consumer Electronics Association president and CEO, announcing Mulally, mentioned the fact that Ford had made it through the recent economic crisis without a government bailout. The Focus Electric will launch later this year and is considered to be the flagship vehicle in a collection of electrified Ford cars that the company says will number five by 2012. The car has a top speed of 84 miles per hour, but Ford did not disclose the range that it can drive before needing a recharge.Focus vehicles for the U.S. market will be assembled in Ford's Michigan plant, "production powered in part by one of the largest solar energy generator systems in the state" according to a release.Ford executives hyped up the car's "holistic vehicle ownership experience," as Sherif Marakby, director of Ford's electrification programs and engineering, called it: an improved version of Ford's MyFord Touch console, with specialized SmartGauge display technology to help car owners drive more efficiently and see a "range view" to determine how far they are from a charging station' "value charging," a new partnership with Microsoft to calculate the most cost-efficient charging options by taking advantage of off-peak and discounted utility rates' and MyFord Mobile, a new mobile app that lets Focus Electric owners find charging stations (through a partnership with the AOL-owned MapQuest), determine the best charging times, unlock the car doors, and even post electric-driving achievements to social-networking sites.Ford says that it is working with utility companies to work on handling the demand that plug-in vehicles will place on the electrical grid, and that for customer convenience it expects that the number of public charging systems in US will rise from 1,800 (mostly in California) to 12,000. At-home charging stations will be serviced through a partnership with Best Buy's Geek Squad.More of Ford's green auto plans will be revealed later this month at the North American Auto Show, said Ford head of global product development Derrick Kuzak when he joined Mulally onstage in the keynote address. "But the new Focus just felt more at home at CES," he said.

0 Vote(s)

HP&39's WebOS tablet is due sometime early next year.(Credit:HP)The pieces seem to be falling into place for HP's first WebOS-based tablet.Executives have confirmed several times that there will be a touch-screen tablet featuring Palm's mobile operating system released sometime between January and March, though little else is known about it. HP has trademarked "PalmPad" and an exec has even publicly referred to an upcoming tablet as such, but it's not clear that will be the product's actual name once it starts shipping to customers.Today Engadget got its hands on an internal HP slide that shows not a tablet, but what is purported to be the Bluetooth keyboard accessory for the WebOS tablet. On its own, sure, it's not that exciting, but whomever sent the slide along also said that the design and styling of the keyboard are reflective of the look and feel of the tablet. Word is that the tablet will have "no hard buttons" on the front, and it is referred to internally as "Topaz."Another piece of WebOS info was also included: HP is apparently planning something "like a Pre" with no physical keyboard aimed at teenagers for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. Phones with virtual keyboards, as we know, do pretty fantastic sales. But HP should probably talk to their friends at Microsoft about the perils of selling phones aimed at teens.

0 Vote(s)

CES 2010 was a lightweight show when it came to cell phones and smartphones. That's often the case with CES, as mobile devices have to share the stage with bigger products like 3D televisions and futuristic robots. That's set to change at CES 2011 of course, but we wanted to take some time and take a look back at the phones of CES 2010.Mobile handsets of CES 2010: Where are they now (photos) We awarded the Best of CES 2010 in the mobile category to the LG Lotus Elite, because that was the most innovative handset we saw at the show. Even though it was really a sequel to the LG Lotus of the previous year, the Lotus Elite had a great wow factor with its fashion-forward looks, innovative external touch screen, and overall features. Even if it's "just" a simple messaging phone, it was one we liked. This is true even when we ended up reviewing it later on.Other Best of CES nominees included the Motorola Backflip and the Sonim XP3.2 Quest Pro. We thought the Backflip had an interesting design, but we had questions about the usability of the back touch pad and the durability of the oddly placed keyboard. We ended up liking it a bit more than we anticipated when we reviewed it later on, but we still weren't too pleased with its sluggish performance. The Sonim XP3.2 Quest Pro, while newly updated with Gorilla Glass and GPS features, was really an update of a previous product. A couple of other products that debuted at CES 2010 were the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus, both of which were sequels of the previous year's Palm products. One thing we should note is that even though we saw Google'sNexus One in Las Vegas, it didn't technically debut at CES, which is why it didn't get nominated. Otherwise, I think we can agree it would have been a shoo-in.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:IDC)It sells just a single smartphone, but Apple is now the world's fourth largest mobile phone supplier, according to the "Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker" report released yesterday by IDC.Thanks to record shipments of the iPhone 4, which arrived on the U.S. market at the start of the summer, Apple shot past several other mobile phone vendors, landing in fourth place ahead of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. For the third quarter, Apple shipped 14.1 million phones, 1.7 million more than RIM and 3.7 million more than Sony Ericsson, which fell out of the top five list for the first time since 2004. This was also the quarter in which the iPhone 4 reached 17 additional countries to establish its beachhead worldwide. With heavy demand for smartphones, Apple also joined RIM as the second smartphone-only vendor among the top five."The entrance of Apple to the top 5 vendor ranking underscores the increased importance of smartphones to the overall market. Moreover, the mobile phone makers that are delivering popular smartphone models are among the fastest growing firms," Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, said in a statement. "Vendors that aren't developing a strong portfolio of smartphones will be challenged to maintain and grow market share in the future."Though still in first place around the world, Nokia is feeling ongoing pressure from the likes of Apple, Android, and RIM. Its market share continues to dip, dropping to 32.4 percent in the third quarter, compared with 36.5 percent a year ago. Nokia's control of the mobile phone market has also been impacted by various Chinese vendors that have made inroads in emerging markets, according to IDC. To fight back, the company has tried to focus on improving its overall smartphone lineup.Solid smartphone sales helped Nokia return to the black with its recent third-quarter earnings, but it also announced a series of layoffs as it attempts to streamline its Symbian phone division and other units. New CEO Stephen Elop recently acknowledged that the company is facing a "remarkably disruptive time in the industry, with recent results demonstrating that we must reassess our role in and our approach to this industry."Among the top five, only LG Electronics lost market share in the third quarter with fewer phones shipped than a year ago. Unlike its rivals, LG hasn't been able to make a huge splash in the smartphone category, according to IDC. But RIM shipped a record number of phones during the quarter, with results boosted by its Curve 8520 entry-level model in emerging markets and its pricier Torch phone in the U.S.Overall, the global mobile phone market enjoyed its fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, with shipments rising by 14.6 percent in the third quarter to reach 340.5 million units, compared with 297.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Looking forward to 2014, continued demand for smartphones will drive mobile phone shipments, as IDC expects the smartphone market alone to grow by 55 percent year over year.

0 Vote(s)

It&'s impossible to throw a rock at a media outlet today without hitting a story about Wikileaks. And to make the rock throwing even easier, the subject of this week&'s Why Is This News is: Wikileaks &8211' &8216'enemy of democracy, just plain fact of life&8230' or both&'In it, Sarah argues that, for good or ill, the leaking of several hundred thousand diplomatic cables simply reflects today&'s reality that no information is ever truly secret in the Internet age. The US government, like major companies before them, simply need to adapt to that reality &8211' improving their behaviour, but also getting better at locking down the truly secret stuff. Paul, on the other hand, just hates everything about Wikileaks, describing it as one man&'s pathetic ego trip which reveals almost nothing useful and which, if anything, will massively set back the site&'s stated goal of &8216'transparency&'.In many ways, we&'re both arguing the same point from different angles. But, hey, at least we&'re arguing &8211' which always makes for a fun episode. Video below.

0 Vote(s)

We''ve seen a variety of perks bestowed upon drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles, but the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Mass., may just go further than we''ve ever observed. Not content to offer just free charging for such vehicles a4" as the Sea-Tac Airport and at least one McDonald''s have both been known to do a4" the hotel has developed an array of integrated benefits for consumers who make smart transportation choices of many kinds. To be sure, there is a free charging station in the hotel''s Charles Square Garage for drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as free bicycle parking for those who travel on two wheels. But the benefits are far more numerous than that. Working with Propark America, the garage now uses NanoMAX, for example, a new, patented detection system that measures the size of vehicles entering a parking facility and adjusts the parking rate accordingly. Smaller, environmentally friendly vehicles are assessed a smaller rate as a reward to the driver for operating a vehicle that has a lesser impact on the environment. The garage also has a special area reserved for guests who drive smaller vehicles such as Mini Coopers and Smart Cars' in addition to specially marked parking spots, the section is adorned with high-resolution wall graphics, colourful floor coatings and energy efficient lighting. A tire inflation station lets visitors fill their tires for maximum fuel efficiency, while a free bicycle lending program for guests of the hotel provides Electra Amsterdam Classic bicycles with handlebar-mounted basket, helmet, lock and a map to local bike trails. All of which is a lovely illustration of an old expression: If something is worth doing, it''s worth doing right. Scattered efforts targeting one type of vehicle or another are certainly better than nothing, but there are multiple ways to help the environment. It''s this kind of integrated and full-service approach that''s likely to make an impression a4" and a difference.
Microsofta4a4s next-generation of Surface touchscreen tables made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show this week. We caught up with Chip Wood, senior director of Surface at Microsoft, in a one-on-one interview about version 2.0 of Surface.Surface is one of Microsoft&'s magical technologies, a table with a touchscreen surface that responds to as many as 50 fingers touching it at the same time. The new Surface is a lot more versatile than its predecessor and could become a big hit among advertisers and sponsors who want to entertain people at venues ranging from sports bars to concierge desks at hotels. More than 350 developers are working on applications for Surface, Wood said. It is targeted at companies that want to create showpiece technology. That&'s many more fingers than the previous version, launched in 2008, could recognize at once. So it lets people collaborate around a table and do things at the same time, like taking a photo with their fingers and stretching it out to a bigger size. The table has a 40-inch durable touchscreen display that is about 4 inches thick. The previous version was bulky and had a projection system and multiple cameras underneath. This time, working with Samsung, Microsoft created a new technology called PixelSense, which allows the surface of the table to sense, or &''see,&'' what is on top of it without using a camera. It can recognize fingers, hands, and other objects pressed directly on the screen.&''PixelSense brings the power of vision right into an LCD (liquid crystal display),&'' Wood said.As Wood shows, the system can recognize a message written on a piece of paper. Wood showed us how partners such as Red Bull have created applications for Microsoft that let people interact with the system in new ways. The Royal Bank of Canada created a banking application to educate users about savings accounts. The bank is sending paper mailers to customers and asks them to bring the mailer in and drop it on a table. The table recognizes the pamphlet and the user&'s name and can offer specific advice to the customer. The table can show them how much money they can save over time. You can hang a Surface table on the wall vertically or use it as a traditional table. In the U.S., it will sell for $7,600 when it debuts later this year as the Samsung SUR40. That&'s hefty, but it&'s not such a bad price for businesses to pay. And it is a lot cheaper than the $12,500 cost for the 30-inch original Surface table. It still isn&'t targeted at consumers to purchase, but businesses who want to attract consumers will likely spring for it.It isn&'t clear if Surface will succeed. The pre-production unit didn&'t have perfectly responsive touch, but Wood said that would change as more models are produced. It certainly is cool technology.Next Story: Up close with Razer Hydra motion controls for Valve&'s Portal 2 game (video) Previous Story: Verizon iPhone now said to come late January with current plansPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Microsoft Surface, SUR40Companies: Microsoft, SamsungPeople: Chip Wood Tags: Microsoft Surface, SUR40Companies: Microsoft, SamsungPeople: Chip WoodDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Autodesk, the 3D computer-aided design company, has purchased 3D game design platform Wild Pockets, VentureBeat has learned.Wild Pockets, which launched at DEMO in Fall 2008, was working on technology that allowed ordinary folks to create their own game worlds using simple 3D animation tools. The goal was to democratize game development.San Francisco-based Wild Pockets offers a free, crowdsourced 3D game platform for browser-based games. Formerly known as Sim Ops Studios, Wild Pockets was the brainchild of Shanna Tellerman (pictured), chief executive and founder of the company. The technology came from a project that Tellerman did at Carnegie Mellon University. Neither Autodesk nor Tellerman commented on the rumor. But Tellerman&'s LinkedIn page shows that she now works as a product manager at Autodesk. It&'s not clear what Autodesk will do with the technology, but Autodesk makes a variety of game-making tools such as 3ds Max and Maya.Next Story: A New Year&'s resolution for Google: Buy MySpace, stat!
