With an emphasis on tech, the president and his dinner companions discussed ways to encourage people to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM. Obama also talked up his new Startup America initiative, designed to build partnerships between universities and the private sector to help kick-start new businesses. The meeting was part of an ongoing series of conversations with the business sector on how to strengthen the economy, support entrepreneurship, increase U.S. exports, and get people back to work, according to the White House. Obama also expressed interest in ongoing discussions with the group as a way of sharing new ideas to create jobs and stimulate the economy. The president continues his focus on technology today as he takes a tour of an Intel plant in Oregon and meets with CEO Paul Otellini to discuss the company's efforts to invest in STEM to create more high-tech jobs. Obama also plans to appoint Otellini to a panel of experts set up to offer the administration advice on creating jobs.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:The Daily)Watching with great interest (and a little skepticism) the launch of The Daily, the newiPad new publication, it's easy to marvel at the design, technology, and ambitious scale of the project. But after spending a few hours leafing through the inaugural issue, you are left with the same nagging questions. Will readers pay 99-cents a week, or $40 a year, for what is essentially a daily downloadable news app, especially when so much high-quality news is available online at no costThe real litmus test (at least for someone such as myself, having worked in newspapers, magazines, and broadcasting before the Web), is whether The Daily can make itself truly indispensable in a world acclimated to 24-hour news cycles and feature-free blogs and RSS feeds. Free iPad news alternatives to The Daily (screenshots) Since the iPad's April 2010 launch, I've developed what I think is a pretty killer daily reading list, designed to give me a look at the day's top issues from a variety of perspectives. Interestingly, while I initially used reader apps, such as Pulse, for content aggregation, I've since gone back to simply using the iPad'sSafari browser, and I choose news outlets that format themselves well to being viewed and navigated on a touch screen. While The Daily's scope and deep editorial bench are impressive, the product is by its nature not as dynamic or real-time as Web-based news, and largely ignores the most basic of interactive features--the outgoing link to another Web page or publication. There are a handful of Web links, but they launch in their own feature-free mini browser, rather than in Safari. (I once worked at a media company skittish about linking out to other sites...back in 1999). And while the team behind The Daily certainly has editorial experience and credentials to spare, will it really have the boots-on-the-ground ability, or the institutional memory, to master complex global stories Put another way, I'm not yet convinced The Daily can compete with my preferred one-two punch of the New York Times and The Atlantic for up-to-the-minute current events reporting and analysis. I've put together a quick tour of my daily iPad reading list. It's not designed for everyone or every topic, but I do consider myself a lifelong news addict, and I find the iPad mostly ideal for news consumption (my biggest current complaint is that the videos on CharlieRose.com are in Flash and won't play on the iPad). My main criteria for inclusion are: Good-to-excellent formatting in Safari on the iPadReal-time updates to contentEasy to read with plain black text on a white backgroundQuick loading, even on a 3G connectionFew, if any, intrusive adsNo registration required (with a single exception for the New York Times)Peruse the full list in the slideshow here, and let me know which sites you'd recommend instead in the comments section below.

0 Vote(s)

You may be able to get your sweetie a Verizon iPhone this Valentine&39's Day.(Credit:Kent German/CNET)On the heels of Verizon's announcement of a special press conference on January 11, Boy Genius Report says a source has confirmed that Apple has blacked out retail employee vacation time for February 3 to February 6, covering a possible VerizoniPhone launch weekend. When I was a manager at an Apple Store here in Portland, this was a fairly common occurrence for big launch days. Generally these employee vacation blackout days would come months in advance, allowing our staff to make plans around those dates. This of course is only a theory, but in my experience we never had a blacked-out weekend that was not a launch (generally the iPhone orMac OS X).The regions of the United States that BGR has knowledge of have all confirmed these dates as blacked out. Verizon is expected to make the big announcement on January 11 (at 11 a.m. no less), most likely confirming they will finally be bringing Apple's iPhone to the vast Verizon network. The timing all makes sense with Verizon easing contracts to allow for upgrades, the continuous flow of parts photographs and speculation, and with Valentine's Day just two weeks later. The last remaining mystery seems to only be that of specs. Many are hoping for Apple to jump aboard the LTE 4G bandwagon and compete with 4G smartphones running Android, announced at CES. As I, and others, have noted, this is not likely, as Apple's business move to join Verizon would be to gain market share in the rapidly expanding smartphone sector. Were Apple to limit the Verizon iPhone to LTE customers, it would minimize market penetration and lose out on most of Verizon's subscriber base. Until 4G is more prevalent, Apple will most likely stick to CDMA-based versions of the iPhone. I wouldn't expect an LTE version until 2012 at the earliest. Are you making plans to line up for Verizon's iPhone Are you switching from AT&T Let me know your plans in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)Apple has posted job listings for engineers specializing in voice technologies such as speech recognition, iOS software development for speech applications, and speech research. Apple recently filed for patents related to greater integration of voice commands throughoutiPhone,iPad, andiPod Touch apps, including a customizable API that developers could use to include voice control in their software. The recent job postings on Apple's Web site suggest that this patent, along with other voice control technologies (such as the purchase of Siri earlier this year), are being taken seriously. Each of the four open positions relate specifically to sectors of voice technology, namely: Senior Speech Research ScientistiOS Speech Application Engineer2 Speech Recognition Engineers Perhaps Steve Jobs and Apple are envisioning an OS that can be controlled by your voice alone. Certainly, speech recognition and commands have been around for a while in the computer world, but it doesn't seem like Apple is giving up on it just yet. Does this signal that a new, voice-controlled OS is on the way from Apple Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft is now providing e-mail, calendaring, and instant-messaging programs for students of the State University of New York.SUNY's 64 campuses are part of a university-wide Live@edu agreement that covers more than 465,000 students with Microsoft's online productivity suite. Besides the aforementioned tools, this includes things like online storage, video conferencing, and access to Microsoft's Office Web Apps--all of which are offered up free of charge. In a post yesterday announcing the rollout, Microsoft U.S. Education CTO Cameron Evans said that the deal is saving Monroe Community College--one of the SUNY schools involved with the program--$600,000 over five-years. That money, Evans said, would be spent on making the campus "greener." SUNY's implementation of Live@edu is one of the largest yet, though overshadowed by the London Grid for Learning's deployment in 2009, which offered the free suite of online tools to more than 1 million students. A close second is the Kentucky Department of Education, which earlier this year moved 700,000 users to Live@edu. Interestingly enough, that move took Kentucky off the on-premises Microsoft Exchange Servers and into Microsoft's cloud instead.Prior to the agreement, Microsoft says some 70,000 SUNY students were using Live@edu. The other 395,000 or so will presumably be moved over in the first few months of 2011. Update at 4:45 p.m. PDT: A SUNY student has e-mailed CNET and pointed out that some campuses made the switch to Google's Apps for education platform as recently as last year. According to Microsoft's response (below), it may stay that way for some:"The agreement announced today makes Live@edu available as an option for all of SUNY's 64 campuses, effective immediately. Some campuses are already using Live@edu today, and for those who are using other offerings and choose to switch, it's up to the campus on how/when they want to roll out Live@edu to their students and faculty."A Google representative confirmed that indeed 13 SUNY schools currently run Google Apps for education, with a total of 23 schools on or considering using Google's apps platform, though would not say whether those schools plan to drop the program in favor of Microsoft's system. What was said to be a more common occurrence was that schools offered up multiple platforms, letting students choose which one they wanted.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:National Center for Computational Sciences, Oak Ridge National Laboratory)Look at who's logging supercomputing time these days and you are likely to get a glimpse of some major innovations on the horizon. The U.S. Department of Energy announced today it has just granted the largest award ever of the department's supercomputing time through it's Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program, now in it's sixth year. The large award, a total of 1.7 billion hours distributed over 57 projects, was partially attributed to the fact that the Energy Department has been expanding its supercomputing capacity, and, therefore, simply has the means to grant more time. But it also reflects a growing interest in using computer modeling now that it has increased in sophistication, according to the Energy Department. The INCITE program is somewhat like the lottery in that everyone has a chance. The Energy Department has an open application process in which any scientist, whether working in the academic or commercial world, is welcome to submit a request to win supercomputing hours, and it's not restricted to energy-related science.(Credit:Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, Argonne National Laboratory)The winning hours are divided between two supercomputers, the IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory aka "Intrepid," and the Cray XT5 supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory aka "Jaguar," which recently lost its first place status to China's Tianhe-1A as the world's most powerful supercomputer.Among these latest 57 recipients, are large companies like Boeing and General Electric that are going to use the time for sophisticated modeling of potential designs for jet engines and wind turbines, respectively. There are also the climate change and earthquake prediction simulation projects, as one might expect. Most interesting to the energy sector perhaps is the Lithium/Air Battery Project led by Jack Wells, group leader of the Computational Nanotechnology Group at the Center for Engineering Science Advanced Research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His team will be running simulations of lithium/air battery reactions. A successful version of the air battery would be capable of storing 10 times the amount of energy as a lithium ion battery of the same weight. Such a battery might make electriccars more competitive compared to gas-powered cars since it would offer greater driving range on a single charge than current models.A serious commitment to next-generation nuclear power plants might also be on the U.S. energy horizon as several of the recipients are leaders of nuclear energy research projects. The Energy Department's own Argonne National Laboratory Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) team is going to use its time to test design ideas for a next-generation nuclear reactor. Specifically, it's developing a new type of fast neutron reactor that can partition and transmute the elements contained in spent nuclear fuel to reduce the amount of spent nuclear material that would need to be stored underground post-reactor use.But the Energy Department supercomputing time was not just granted to energy-related projects or even U.S.-based institutions.George Karniadakis, professor of applied mathematics at Brown University, scored time to run multiscale simulations of blood flow in the human brain. The information learned could lead to prevention of brain aneurysms and strokes, and a better understanding of diseases like sickle cell anemia. And a team led by Richard Needs, a professor of theoretical physics and a professorial fellow of Robinson College at the University of Cambridge in England, won time to study the behavioral properties of homogeneous electron gas, the charge carriers in semiconductors. The Energy Department released a report with the full list of projects (PDF) that were granted supercomputing time, and include more technical specifics for each simulation being run.

0 Vote(s)

WikiLeaks, the nonprofit site that publishes leaked government documents, was booted off Amazon.coma4a4s cloud computing services today following political pressure from Senator Joe Lieberman.Personally, Ia4a4m disappointed by Amazona4a4s action, because I think WikiLeaks performs a valuable service. (Gawkera4a4s Ryan Tate has a great post highlighting why the move is hypocritical.) At the same time, I realize that this is a complicated, sensitive issue, and that Amazon may only have done what it believed was legally required or morally right.Too bad the company isna4a4t explaining itself at all. We emailed an Amazon spokesperson for comment, but they didn&'t respond. The company also declined to comment on its relationship with WikiLeaks to the Associated Press, and hasn&'t released a statement to any news organization as far as I can tell. (The announcement, such as it was, came from Sen. Liebermana4a4s office.) This seems to have become Amazona4a4s standard approach to controversial decisions &8212' just refuse to comment and hope that things blow over. For example, when it temporarily pulled books published by Macmillan from its website while the companies were in the middle of tense pricing negotiations, Amazon didna4a4t announce what it was doing, it didna4a4t respond to requests from more information from reporters or authors, and instead it posted a passive-aggressive comment on the Kindle forum.More recently, when Amazon came under fire for selling a self-published a4Apedophile guidea4, it again declined to comment, and instead pulled the book without explanation. In this case, Ia4a4d be particularly concerned if I was a Web company hosted by Amazon or thinking about signing up with them. If therea4a4s controversial content on my website, is Amazon going to take it down as soon as ita4a4s pressured Political blog Talking Points Memo points out that Amazona4a4s terms of service prohibit illegal activity, but ita4a4s not clear yet whether WikiLeaks has done anything illegal.Meanwhile, the WikiLeaks site is back up on a Swedish hosting service, and unlike Amazon, the organization has been very open about what it thinks. On its Twitter account, WikiLeaks said, a4AIf Amazon are so uncomfortable with the first amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books.a4Previous Story: Betterment raises $3M to give casual investors a more accessible portfolioPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Amazon Web ServicesCompanies: Amazon.com, WikiLeaksPeople: Joe Lieberman Tags: Amazon Web ServicesCompanies: Amazon.com, WikiLeaksPeople: Joe LiebermanAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Take-Two Interactive Software reported a strong profit for the fiscal year and quarter ended Oct. 31, the first time it has reported a sizable profit in a year when it didn&'t ship a Grand Theft Auto Game. Much of that was due to the breakout hit from Take-Two&'s RockStar Games label, Red Dead Redemption. The results suggest that Take-Two has cracked the formula for consistently generating profits in an unpredictable, hit-driven business.New York-based Take-Two has struggled for years with a unique problem in the industry. Grand Theft Auto sales generate huge profits during the years when RockStar launches a title in the series. But it usually lost money in the years when there was no GTA. For the first time in years, Take-Two has been able to report a profit in a non-GTA year, for the fiscal year ended Oct. 31, 2011. (Take-Two is changing its fiscal year to end March 31 going forward). The company&'s stock price is up 8.6 percent in after-hours trading, rising $1.03 a share to $12.97 a share. The solid performance is due mostly to the emergence of a spectacular new franchise, Red Dead Redemption, which was my favorite game of the year. In fact, three of my favorite games this year were Take-Two titles' that was more than from any other company.Red Dead Redemption, which is like a Clint Eastwood movie turned into a game, has sold more than 8 million copies since May. That means it has generated revenues of around $480 million at retail. In the most recent quarter ended Oct. 31, Take-Two also saw revenue from Mafia II, NBA 2K11, and Sid Meier&'s Civilization V. The NBA 2K11 title sold more than 3 million units, partly because Electronic Arts canceled its own NBA Elite game. What&'s remarkable is that Take-Two turned a profit even though it delayed a couple of major games, including Max Payne 3. Thanks to the strong basketball game sales, the 2K Sports division was profitable in the year. Of the big games that shipped this year, only Mafia II got less than stellar reviews.&''Candidly, I think we are the most creative company in the business,&'' said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of the company. &''We don&'t innovate by rolling the dice with our shareholders&' money. We do it with our brands and our teams.&''That&'s not all bluster. Take-Two invested in Red Dead Redemption for five years before launching the game this spring. And its focus on quality shows in most of its major games. The trend toward quality is one that is being pursued by other big companies in games, but it&'s not easy. Electronic Arts has stumbled financially in part because it takes a long time to get results from quality investments. Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft have also doubled down on quality with huge investments in marquee games. The result is that there isn&'t much room on the shelves for mediocre games anymore. For the fiscal year, revenue was $1.16 billion, up 65 percent from a year ago. GAAP net income was $49.7 million, compared with a loss of $130.4 million a year ago. Non-GAAP net income (from continuing operations) was $97.5 million, or $1.06 per share, compared with a loss of $90.4 million, or $1.18 a share, a year ago. Non-GAAP revenue includes revenues such as online game revenue. For the three months ended Oct. 31, revenue was $373.7 million, up 32 percent. GAAP net income was $54.2 million, compared with a loss of $7.9 million. Non-GAAP net income was $64.0 million, or 67 cents a share, compared with $7.9 million, or 10 cents a share a year ago. Analysts had expected net income of 31 cents a share.Zelnick said that there was confusion about the state of the video game industry, given that market researcher NPD says that year-to-date sales are down 5 percent. But that&'s mainly because of weakness in music and handheld games. Gamers have tired of the Guitar Hero games and handheld games are getting hammered by the iPhone. But games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have seen double-digit revenue increases, Zelnick said, and the installed base of console hardware has grown substantially.&''This challenges the sentiment that core gaming has cooled off,&'' Zelnick said. &''Gamers are as willing as ever to open their wallets to games with differentiated experiences.&''For the year ending March 31, 2011, Take-Two is forecasting revenue of $1.0 billion to $1.1 billion. It plans for a fiscal year profit of 50 cents a share to 65 cents a share on a non-GAAP basis. The big titles coming next year include L.A. Noire in the spring. That title is expected to be a big one in part because it is a fresh story' the game is based on a &''film noir&'' style detective game with very realistic-looking animated human characters. Other titles coming include the long-awaited, politically incorrect shooting game, Duke Nukem Forever, set for release sometime during 2011. That game has been in the works for more than a dozen years, but it looks like it will finally happen. Other big titles are Spec Ops: The Line (fiscal year 2012), Xcom (fiscal year 2012), and BioShock Infinite (calendar year 2012). Take-Two will be hiring during the year, as it expects its research and development costs will go up 11 percent in the March 31 fiscal year. The company said it plans to enter the Asian and Latin American markets. It plans to increase its digital business and is still working on a version of the Civilization game for Facebook. For the quarter, about 46 percent of Take-Two&'s business came from RockStar, 31 percent came from 2K Games, 18 percent from 2K Sports, and 5 percent from 2K Play. For the fiscal year ended Oct. 31, Take-Two reported $94 million in digital online revenue, mainly from sales of downloadable content on the consoles for Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto &8212' as well as digital download sales of the PC game Civilization V.As we noted in our story on a new video released today, Zelnick said that the technology for animating human faces in the L.A. Noire game (pictured right) is &''extraordinary.&'' Ben Feder, who has been chief executive for five years, previously announced he is resigning from the company and plans to do extensive travel in Asia with his family. Interestingly, the employment contracts for the top three RockStar games executives expires in January, 2012. Take-Two has 2,000 employees, but those three include Dan and Sam Hauser, the duo behind Grand Theft Auto and other big RockStar games. No word yet on when Grand Theft Auto V will ship.Next Story: Oracle sets eyes on HP after posting strong second quarter Previous Story: And we&'re off!
Ia4a4m hearing that Instagram, an iPhone photo application thata4a4s attracting a lot of buzz, is raising a new funding round led by Benchmark Capital. To be clear, my source is well-positioned to hear about the deal, but they arena4a4t directly involved, so you may want to classify this as a rumor.
