Amazon has shut down its affiliates program in Connecticut and Arkansas over the controversial issue of collecting state taxes. The company announced the move in letters to affiliates Friday, noting that contracts with all Connecticut residents who participate in the Amazon Associates Program would be terminated effective immediately, while contracts with affiliates in Arkansas will be terminated on July 24.Affiliates of the Associates Program are typically Web site owners and bloggers who link to Amazon on their sites as a way of driving traffic to the online retailer. In return, they receive a commission if a sale is made.Though Amazon isn't required to collect taxes in states where it has no presence, many cash-strapped local governments have tried to force the company to pay taxes in states where affiliates are located. Amazon naturally has challenged that requirement, a move that has forced the company to shut down its affiliate programs as it fights the tax regulations. The retailer has terminated similar agreements in other states, including Illinois, Colorado, North Carolina, and Rhode Island, and has threatened to do the same in other states where affiliates are located. In its letters to Connecticut and Arkansas affiliates, the company blamed the budgets signed by the governors of those states that force it to collect tax from online purchases even though Amazon has no physical presence in the states. Because of the new state tax laws, Amazon said it was "compelled" to shut down the affiliates programs."We opposed this new tax law because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive," Amazon said in the letter to Connecticut affiliates. "It was supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside Connecticut, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors. Similar legislation in other states has led to job and income losses, and little, if any, new tax revenue."In a recent interview, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos condemned the drive to collect sales tax, arguing that Amazon is no different than big retail chains that don't collect sales tax in states where they don't have what's known as a "nexus," or presence. The CEO said Amazon's point of view is that the collection of taxes among the states should be simplified, referring to a plan called the Streamlined Sales Tax Initiative."The right place to fix this is with federal legislation," Bezos added. "That's where it can be fixed properly."

0 Vote(s)

Twitter today told developers explicitly that they should stop making third-party clients, citing repeated privacy policy violations and an inconsistent user experience. Ryan Sarver, who leads the company's platform team, said in an announcement on the company's developer discussion group that existing third-party clients can continue to operate but they will be held to rigorous standards of privacy and consistency. The micro-messaging company said it now makes the top five Twitter clients (including its Web site) and says 90 percent of its active users use its apps at least once a month. The key quote is:Developers have told us that they'd like more guidance from us about the best opportunities to build on Twitter. More specifically, developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. The answer is no. In point of fact, there aren't a ton of independent Twitter client shops anymore because UberMedia has bought many of them up, including UberTwitter and Twidroyd, and is in the process of buying TweetDeck. You have to wonder if Accel Partners knew this was coming when the firm for UberMedia last month. Since then, Twitter shut down two of its apps for three days, citing policy violations. And now this.Sarver said developers are welcome to continue to work on Twitter publisher tools, curation, real-time data signals, social CRM and content verticals. But, as for the heart of the Twitter experience: Leave it to us.Story Copyright (c) 2010 AllThingsD. All rights reserved.

0 Vote(s)

Jeppesen&39's iPad app offers electronic aeronautical charts.(Credit:Jeppesen Systems)Apple's iPad my soon find its way onto your next commercial flight, and not just in the cabin as an entertainment device. Major airlines and a charter jet company are considering using thetablet as a way to replace paper navigation charts and laptops both on the ground and during flight. So far, no U.S. airline has adopted iPads exclusively, but Delta Airlines and Alaska Airlines are testing the device for navigational purposes. Alaska spokeswoman Maryanne Lindsay told the Seattle Times that the carrier is running a trial program with a select group of pilots. Calls made by CNET to the Alaska Airlines press office were not returned at the time of this writing.Switching to iPads or other tablet devices would cut down on paper, and on the equipment pilots have to carry. While some specially designed laptops, or "electronic flight bags," can weigh up to 18 pounds, the current iPad weighs just just 1.5 pounds (the recently announced iPad 2 is a tad lighter). What's more, it should save airlines money as well.Yes, there's an app for thatTo power the iPads, Englewood-Colo.-Jeppesen Systems has developed an iPad app called Mobile TC that delivers electronic charts (available now for free in the iTunes App Store). At the the time of this writing, Mobile TC covers only airport terminal charts, but Jeppesen spokesman Brian Rantala told CNET that the app will be expanded to cover in flight use.Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration authorized private jet charter Executive Jet Management to begin using the app as an alternative to paper aeronautical charts. A wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing, Jeppesen also developed aniPhone and iPad app called CrewAlert manage airline crew fatigue. And back in the cabin, Qantas subsidiary Jetstar is close to using iPads as in-flight entertainment units on selected Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft. Though JetStar initially announced its iPad plans last summer, Flightglobal reported today that the airlines airline has compiled a presentation for major movie studios.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Engadget)ThePlayStation Phone leaks keep coming.Just a few days after photos of the rumored PlayStation Phone hit the Web, a new video has been released, showing someone playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer on the device. Like the previously leaked photos, the device has slide-out controls, featuring both a D-pad and the familiar PlayStation buttons. The display boasts a touch screen that seems to respond quite well to the person's taps.In order to play a game on the device, the person in the video was forced to use an app called ROM Buddy, a third-party program available to Android devices. Because of that, the video didn't necessarily answer the question of what kind of games will be made available to the smartphone-gaming device, assuming it's eventually released. The video also failed to answer any of the other questions that consumers might have, like when the PlayStation Phone will eventually be announced or how much it will cost. Sony Ericsson has remained extremely tight-lipped on that front, and has yet to even confirm the existence of the PlayStation Phone. But based on the frequency of leaks, it seems more likely than ever that an announcement is upcoming. In fact, Sony Ericsson is expected to be in attendance at the Mobile World Congress in February, contributing to rumors that the company will be announcing the device at that event. The PlayStation Phone is expected to run Android and feature a 4-inch display, microSD slot, and micro-USB port.(Via Edge-Online)

0 Vote(s)

LinkedIn just announced that Michael Moritz, the Sequoia Capital partner whose past investments include Google and Yahoo, is joining the companya4a4s board. The immediate reason for the move is the departure of Mark Kvamme, who is leaving both Sequoia and the LinkedIn board to become the director of Ohioa4a4s department of development. But there are larger ambitions suggested by the fact that Sequoiaa4a4s most famous partner is joining the board (back when Forbes was still ranking venture capitalists on its Midas List, Moritz was usually vying with fellow Google investor John Doerr for the top spot). There has been speculation about LinkedIn going public for a while now. Reuters recently reported that the company plans to hold its IPO this year to get ahead of Facebooka4a4s expected public offering in 2012. And Moritz certainly has experience serving on the board of companies that go public.LinkedIna4a4s board also includes chief executive Jeff Weiner, founder Reid Hoffman, A.
