New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg(Credit:The City of New York)New York City plans to restrict the use of dirty heating fuels, use its capped landfills for solar farms, and issue loans for green and energy efficiency upgrades to home owners.New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the latest initiatives for PlaNYC, the city's sustainability plan, on Thursday at a press conference in Harlem. It's part of the lead up to Earth Day, which is Friday, April 22, and also happens to be the anniversary of when PlaNYC was first announced, in 2007.Over 132 initiatives grew out of "48 public meetings with 220 groups, yielding almost 1,000 ideas, suggestions, and feedback" and are included in the updated plan released by the mayor's office Thursday. The solar panel/landfill project aims to create partnerships with solar developers. The city plans to offer some of its 3,000 acres of landfill property, including some land on the infamous Fresh Kills landfill, for development of solar farms. The Clean Heat heating fuel campaign proposes to use financial incentives and a public education campaign to curb the use of certain types of heating oils in favor of natural gas and low-sulfur oil. It came about as a direct result of the findings from the city's most recent air quality assessment."Just 1 percent of all buildings in the city produce 86 percent of the total soot pollution from buildings--more than all thecars and trucks in New York City combined. They do this by burning the dirtiest grades of heating fuel available, known as residual oil, or 6 and 4 heating oil," according to an excerpt from the report.Perhaps taking a cue from social-media savvy Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Mayor Bloomberg announced he would be implementing a social-media platform dedicated to crowd-sourcing answers and directing help on New York issues. The new-media tool, called "Change by Us," will first propose questions to the public, then expand into a platform for any community group to utilize. The mayor's office also announced via Twitter that Bloomberg would take questions from the public about PlaNYC marked askmike via Twitter, and try to answer them on his Friday morning radio show."97 percent of PlaNYC's initiatives have been launched. Now we're updating the plan to find new ways to reach our sustainability goals," said a post on the mayor's Twitter page, @NYCMayorsOffice.Bloomberg was compared with Booker after a December 2010 blizzard in which the Newark Mayor successfully used his Twitter account to oversee Newark resources and communicate directly with residents, while the New York mayor simply tweeted that residents should call the usual agencies.PlaNYC was originally announced on Earth Day 2007, with the main intent of reducing the city's greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 when compared with its 2005 levels. As of 2011, emissions have dropped by 13 percent.PlaNYC not only addresses carbon emissions, it also includes programs to change things like the city's air quality in general, water quality, land use, transportation habits, and electricity usage.

0 Vote(s)

Google Earth&'s ability to provide a visually compelling view of the world&'s terrain, cities, oceans, weather data, treks, and more never ceases to amaze me. It looks like Google has added another way for users to view the world in Google Earth: panoramic photos. Google Earth now includes a Photo layer which will allow users to find 2D photos taken from Panoramio (a photo community Google acquired in 2007), as well as panoramic photos sourced from 360cities.net, which collects panoramic photography on the web. Google had previously integrated 360 Cities into Google Earth under the Gallery layer, but this appears to be a deeper integration of the photos into the viewing experience. In Google Earth, the panoramic photos from 360 Cities are marked with red square icons and the photos from Panoramio are marked with a blue icon. If you click the icon, you&'ll be shown a bubble with a panoramic image. You can click again to see a larger version of the panoramic image in photo viewing mode. 360 Cities has a pretty vast database of panoramic photos thanks to its vibrant community of photographers and travelers. The new photo layer not only allows you to get an immersive view of a city or landmark, but it could save you from buying a plane ticket as well.
Is Google struggling to keep top employees from migrating to Facebook and other tech companies Chief executive Eric Schmidt talked about the issue today, focusing specifically on a recent 10 percent raise for all of its 23,000 employees.&''It is a war for talent,&'' Schmidt acknowledged.Thata4a4s particularly true in tech, he said, where salaries remain competitive and even the highest-paid employees can struggle to afford Bay Area property prices. But that wasn&'t the only reason for the raise. Schmidt argued that if Google was just trying to stop its best workers from leaving, the raises would have been much more targeted. Making across-the-board raises and allowing the entire workforce to share in Googlea4a4s success is &''good for the whole company,a4 he said. There is a growing perception that Google is becoming a less exciting place to work. Schmidt countered that as any company matures, it gets stuck with the image of being &''fat, dumb, and happy,a4 but that perception doesna4a4t match the reality. For example, he said a4Aregretted attritiona4 at Google (presumably cases in which Google lost an employee it was trying to keep) has not increased in the past seven years.John Battelle, who interviewed Schmidt on-stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, also asked about Googlea4a4s acquisition strategy. Schmidt said that Google has ramped up the rate of its acquisitions this year, so Battelle wondered about deals that turn out to be flops, where the new employees eventually get frustrated at leave. (Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, whose last startup Dodgeball was acquired by Google, is a prominent example.)Schmidt said this is another case in which the press may have exaggerated the problem. Google management has taken a close look at its acquisition history and found that almost all deals had a4Aa pretty significant impacta4 on Google by bringing in valuable brands, products, or talent.Next Story: You&'ve got mail &8212' still How AOL failed to catch Facebook Previous Story: Google chief shows off unannounced Android phone with near-field communicationPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: talent warCompanies: Facebook, GooglePeople: Eric Schmidt Tags: talent warCompanies: Facebook, GooglePeople: Eric SchmidtAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Much the way Charlie''s Burgers uses a heaping helping of mystery to embellish the allure of its roaming, a4Aanti-restauranta4 gourmet meals, so the Italian town of Ferrara kept most of the details under wraps until the last minute for its recent, pop-up dinner in the city streets.Participants in Ferrara''s September Street Dinner began by purchasing for EUR 60 per person a package for two that included separate tickets for aperitifs, a table and two chairs, and two dinner menu choices' also included were two Street Dinner sweatshirts, instructions and a map of the city. Guests also provided their mobile phone number up front. Then, on the designated evening, an SMS arrived revealing first the location where aperitifs were to be served. Next, an hour before dinner, a second text message told participants where to pick up their table, chairs and chosen meals. Finally, after that a third text message revealed at last the location of the dinner. An option including overnight stay in a 3- or 4-star hotel was also offered beginning at EUR 115 per person. All participants were entered in a drawing for a free trip to Mauritius as well. Operated by travel agency Link Tours with sponsorship from a variety of other local organizations, the Street Dinner is planned to occur again at some as-yet-unspecified date in 2011.Part treasure hunt and part pop-up restaurant, it''s hard to imagine a better way to promote a city and its local highlights while giving consumers an experience they''ll remember. With the overnight option, that can even be extended to consumers from afar. One to emulate, particularly in artistic or historic locations around the world!
Cloud storage provider Panzura has raised $12 million in a second round of funding. The San Jose, Calif., company aims to provide Web-connected cloud storage that is faster than storage devices attached directly to locally hosted servers. The startup debuted its Application Cloud Controller hardware in June. Its controller works by inspecting data packets and then using hardware acceleration to fetch or store data quickly. For security-conscious corporate users, it also encrypts data so it can be sent over the network safely. The product also works with MicrosoftSharePoint collaboration software, which it says can speed as much as 20 times when division offices are sharing the same data. It also supports other applications such as Common Internet File Systems (CIFS) and Network File Systems (NFS).This latest round of funding was led by Menlo Park, Calif.-based venture capital firm Khosla Ventures.Next Story: DEMO does San Francisco (photos) Previous Story: Waze revs up crowdsourced driving app with $25MPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cloud computing, cloud storageCompanies: Chevron Technology Ventures, CTTV Investments, Khosla Ventures, Matrix Partners, PanzuraPeople: John Hanten Tags: cloud computing, cloud storageCompanies: Chevron Technology Ventures, CTTV Investments, Khosla Ventures, Matrix Partners, PanzuraPeople: John HantenOwen Thomas is the executive editor of VentureBeat.VentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
Facebook may be the most-downloaded free application on the iPhone, but today the companya4a4s chief technology officer Bret Taylor seemed more excited about the opportunities offered by the mobile Web and HTML5.Taylor was speaking today at the Inside Social Apps InFocus conference in San Francisco (he&'s pictured above at Facebook&'s f8 conference last year), where he said that mobile will be the a4Aprimary focusa4 of the Facebook platform team this year. Facebook has said for a while now that it wants to be the a4Asocial layera4 in all mobile applications, and while Taylor acknowledged that Facebook could still do more on that front, he highlighted improvements Facebook has made recently, particularly the single sign-on feature that it announced in November.Moving forward, Taylor said that Facebook has been feeling some pain in supporting so many different platforms. If the company wants to roll out a new feature, it has to add it on Facebook.com, across its various mobile and tablet websites, and across its multiple mobile applications. And if thata4a4s a problem for Facebook, it&'s also a problem for any other developer.a4AOver the long term, most people really view HTML5 as the future platform that wea4a4re going to be looking to,a4 Taylor said. He said that tech companies in Silicon Valley are probably a little ahead of the reality in their focus on HTML5, but HTML5 products are going to be a4Aa huge amount of our investment over the next yeara4, not just spending on Facebook itself but also on developer tools. The debate about the advantages of HTML5 (the latest version of the basic format of the Web) versus native apps is one thata4a4s been going on for a while, and to be clear Taylor didna4a4t sound like he was coming down definitively on one side or the other. But it still seems significant that he was so pro-HTML5, since Facebook has had such success on the native side, and since Facebooka4a4s former iPhone developer famously went on a rant about the limitations of HTML5.Taylor didn&'t just talk about mobile. He said that in 2010, Facebook&'s main focus for the platform was on the user experience, and that the team succeeded in cutting back spam in users&' newsfeeds and messages by 95 percent. This year the company is turning its attention to growth. He cited Zynga&'s game CityVille, which reached 100 million users in 43 days, as an example of how quickly an app can grow now.Next Story: You know whata4a4s cool 8 Oscar nominations for The Social Network Previous Story: With Amazon Tote, Amazon.com wants to set a weekly shopping datePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: HTML5, iPhone, native appsCompanies: FacebookPeople: Bret Taylor Tags: HTML5, iPhone, native appsCompanies: FacebookPeople: Bret TaylorAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
