We have new details on Apple&'s iPad 2 from component suppliers, but none of it is all that surprising. There&'s word that the new iPad will have front and rear-facing cameras, and that it will be thinner, lighter, and feature a higher-resolution display, Reuters reports. Now I realize that since we have no official details on the iPad 2, nothing is set in stone yet. But we&'ve been hearing about cameras on the iPad successor for months now. And given that all of the iPad&'s tablet competitors &8212' including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the BlackBerry PlayBook &8212' feature dual cameras, it would simply be unfathomable for Apple not to follow suit.Apple also recently brought its FaceTime video chat service to the iPod Touch and Mac computers, so it would make sense for it to bring video chat to the iPad as well.Reuters points to camera module makers Genius Electronic Optical and Largan Precision as new Apple component suppliers, but neither would confirm that they were building components for the iPad 2.That the iPad will be lighter, thinner, and equipped with a better display is no surprise either. Many complained that the original iPad&'s weight (1.6 pounds) made it too heavy to hold for long periods of time. And ever since Apple introduced the high-resolution Retina Display on the iPhone 4, the iPad&'s resolution seemed less impressive in comparison.Reuters&' sources also confirm our previous report, which said that the iPad 2 will ship by the end of February and will be available for purchase some time in April. It&'s expected that the iPad 2 will be announced in January.Next Story: Sprint: 4G tablet coming in 2011, 80% of CIOs want tablets Previous Story: Forrester reveals who uses location-based services the mostPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: Apple, Genius Electronic Optical, Largan Precision Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: Apple, Genius Electronic Optical, Largan PrecisionDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Customer support startup Zendesk has raised $19 million in Series C funding led by Matrix Partners with existing investors Benchmark Capital and Charles River Ventures participating in the round. This brings Zendesk&'s total funding to over $25.5 million. Launched in 2008, Zendesk offers a web-based, SaaS-delivered help desk / support ticketing application that gives companies a simple way to manage incoming support requests from end customers.Over the past two years, the startup has managed to gain an impressive client list, including Groupon, Twitter, Yammer, Sony Music, TriptIt, Lonely Planet, Foursquare and MSNBC. And Zendesk is adding around 20 new customers per day, recently hitting the milestone of 5,000 businesses using the customer service platform. Most recently, Zendesk added a deep integration with Twitter, allowing users to turn a Tweet into a Zendesk ticket. You can also respond publicly to a complaint on Twitter from Zendeska4a4s platform and record any Twitter conversation that is taking place within Zendeska4a4s platform. The startup is also announcing a tighter integration with Salesforce today, which is interesting because Salesforcea4a4s Service Cloud also has much of the functionality that Zendesk offers. Zendesk CEO Mikkel Svane says that we can stay tuned for a Facebook integration with the customer service platform. He adds that mobile will also be huge for Zendesk in 2011. The company already offers native apps for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and has seen more than 50,000 downloads of its iPhone app..The startup&'s price ranges from $9 to $59 per support agent per month, after a one-month free trial. The new funding will be used for sales and marketing efforts. CrunchBase InformationZendeskInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Mobile browser maker Skyfire today announced the launch of the first mobile browser geared specifically for a4Athe social networking generation,a4 the company said.Dubbed the Skyfire 3.0, the new app will now work across a suite of platforms including Facebook Connect for Android 2.0 and higher devices. Skyfire for Android has seen rapid growth since its debut and now boasts close to two million users. It had been operating off a cloud-powered toolbar that let users watch video, view related content, and share content with friends easily and quickly. The Mountain View, Calif., company said Tuesday that the new product is its next step in its dedication to bringing cloud computing-based improvements to multimedia sharing on mobile devices.Skyfire 3.0 is designed specifically for bringing Facebook to Android and other smartphones, allowing quick news feed access, an easy way to see the most popular a4likeda4a4 articles on any site, and the streaming of videos shared from friends.a4ASkyfire was conceived with the vision that cloud computing could be the answer to solving some of the biggest problems in the mobile user experience. For instance, how do we reconcile access to the full Internet, including lots of a4Afata4 high quality video, with the realities of limited spectrum and overcrowded cel towers,a4 Jeff Glueck, CEO of Skyfire told VentureBeat.a4AThe Skyfire cloud makes every video adaptive to network conditions and connection speeds, which means a smoother video playback, but also an average of 75 percent data savings for the network.a4New features offered by Skyfire 3.0 include Skyfire OneTouch Search, which let users enter a single search term and then choose to search Google, Facebook, VideoSurf, Digg, Twitter or Amazon with a single touch &8212' and without having to navigate to separate sites. It also offers Facebook Portal Integration, a Facebook Like Button, a FireplaceFeed Reader and a Popular button on the Skybar that will instantly show what content on the site is most popular within the 500-plus million user Facebook community.&''Skyfire has been the first developer in mobile browsing to concentrate on making video better, when older browsers were still focusing on speed to render text and photos. And video use is growing fast on smartphones,&'' said Glueck. &''Cisco has projected 6,500 percent growth in video on wireless from 2009 to 2014. Skyfire has been at the cutting edge, believing in mobile video from our start. When others believed that YouTube was all that smartphone users should hope for, wea4a4ve always believed that the whole Internet should be accessible to users, not just one or two sites. In the last month, wea4a4ve played video from over 100,000 sites, growing each day, and almost half the video streams come from sites not in the Top 10.
Over the past few years, publishers have started offering consumers various ways to create and buy customized tomes, from quality photo books to personalized children''s books. Adding a twist to that model is Brazilian 24x7, best known for its book vending machines in the subways of Rio and Sao Paulo.24x7 took an existing book and lets readers create a personalized copy. Aprendi com meu pai, or Learned from my Father, features lessons that 54 famous people learned from their fathers. Now, people can order a copy that features a lesson they learned from their own dad. Their story is added to the existing chapters, and their name is printed on the cover, as a co-author of the book.Needless to say, the concept is ideally positioned for birthday and Father''s Day gifts, and creates ample opportunity for related editions a4" Lessons from my Mother, Lessons from my Teacher, etc. If you''re in publishing (or want to be), this one''s for you '-)Website: www.aprendicommeupai.com.brContact: www.aprendicommeupai.com.br/site/contatoSpotted by: Denise Kuperman

0 Vote(s)

In the age of the iPhone, smartphones have beautiful touchscreens. But try to play a 3D game on these phones and the graphics suddenly make these devices feel primitive.ARM hopes to move mobile graphics out of the horse-and-buggy days with the ARM Mali-T604 graphics processing unit (GPU). The component is a self-contained unit that can be incorporated into an ARM microprocessors alongside other components. Together, all of the components are stitched together into a single chip that becomes the brain of a smartphone or tablet computer. Other chip companies can take a license from ARM and build the Mali graphics into their upcoming chips.ARM processors balance energy usage with processing power, which is why they are at the heart of billions of cell phones, which need low-power usage to maximize battery life. But the focus on power efficiency often comes at the cost of graphics technology that resembles PC graphics from a decade ago. To be fair, the industry has made a great leap forward in graphics over the past couple of years with the iPhone. But it still has a long way to go.&''Our goal is to double graphics performance every 12 months,&'' said Jem Davies, vice president of technology and fellow at ARM in Cambridge, England.Samsung will be the first licensee to incorporate the new Mali technology into a chip. The first chips are expected to ship in smartphones in 2013.ARM introduced the new GPU at its ARM Technology conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The new GPUs will likely be used in visual computing applications in consumer electronics, mobile devices, tablets, digital TVs, and automotive entertainment. The GPUs will run cool user interfaces, augmented reality apps, and games.Currently, 31 companies have licensed ARM&'s previous Mali-400 technology, which debuted in 2009. A number of companies are shipping chips with it now and devices using it will debut in early 2011. Davies said the Mali-T604 will have better memory pathway efficiency and other features that enable higher graphics performance. The Mali-T604 chips can accommodate processors with four cores and can process graphics data in three parallel paths known as pipelines. The new GPU will be able to handle GPGPU computing tasks, or the use of graphics processing to compute non-graphics tasks.Previous Story: Pixable raises $2.5M to fund a wave of cool photo appsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Mali-T604Companies: ArmPeople: Ian Smythe, Jem Davies Tags: Mali-T604Companies: ArmPeople: Ian Smythe, Jem DaviesDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
There are few things we love more here at Springwise than seeing a good idea spread. So we couldn''t resist mentioning CASHurDrive, a new carvertising initiative in India. We''ve covered carvertising numerous times over the years, including a4" most recently a4" Singapore''s GottaGetGas effort, which rewards consumers with gas for affixing an advertiser-provided decal to their car. Along very similar lines, India''s CASHurDrive rewards owners with cash or petrol vouchers for displaying advertisements on their vehicles. Participating advertisers can choose from among 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-month campaigns with CASHurDrive. Drivers are screened and monitored for minimum monthly mileage requirements, in particular. The carvertising train appears to be making its way around the globe.
It''s no secret that young kids are irresistibly drawn to all the many games and other entertainment options available on their parents'' mobile phones. The havoc that can wreak on said phones, however, is another matter. Enter the Woogie, a huggable case for iPhone and iPod touch that keeps the device safe while allowing kids to enjoy the fun it has to offer.Launched last month by Tennessee-based Griffin Technology and app developer ScrollMotion, the Woogie is part stuffed animal and part protective case for iPhone and iPod touch. The six-legged creature features two built-in speakers powered by included AAA batteries, and its body is made from soft, non-toxic fabrics designed to protect the device within from the drops, dings and bumps that are sure to happen in a kid''s hands. The Woogie is easily carried by a child, but its legs can also be tucked underneath to prop up the phone for hands-free viewing. Priced at USD 19.99, the Woogie is available online from Griffin. Also available for the Woogie in Apple''s App Store is ScrollMotion''s free Iceberg Kids Sesame Street eBook sampler app for iPhone and iPod touch, which reads stories out loud and even allows parents and kids to record their own voices. More than 150 additional Woogie-ready titles are available in the App Store as well. With the continuing rise of portable devices, it''s a safe bet that demand for kid-proof protection will only increase. The Woogie, however, is currently available only in the U.S. One to partner with or emulate in other parts of the world (Related: The coffee cup for moms that won''t scald tykes a4" Personalized e-stories for kids on iPhone and Kindle a4" iPhone app narrates stories for young kids a4" iPhone game gets kids into the (hidden) park.)Website: www.griffintechnology.com/products/woogieContact: www.griffintechnology.com/about/contact

0 Vote(s)

StumbleUpon, traditionally a tool for website discovery, is taking a crack at application discovery on the Android Marketplace with the launch of its App Discovery feature on its Android app today. The mobile app, which already helps users discover new websites, will recommend Android applications based on what web sites the user says they&'ve &''liked&'' via StumbleUpon&'s interface. The new app recommendations will be based on a user&'s own app preferences, as well as his or her friends&' app usage. If the user finds an app they like, they can click through to the Android Marketplace and download it.Discovery is the biggest, and also one of the newest, challenges that startups face today. There are alreadymore than 300,000 apps on the iPhone App Store, and more than 1,000 more are added to that store daily. There are also about 115,000 apps on the Android Marketplace, according to AndroLib.com. So there&'s a lot of noise, and it can be discouraging for mobile app developers to launch an application only to make a few dollars in sales a month.StumbleUpon isn&'t the first new tool for application discovery on the Android Marketplace a4" or any marketplace for that matter. AppStoreHQ, which launched at DiscoveryBeat 2010 a few weeks ago, helps users discover new Android applications in a similar way: It looks at a user&'s own installed applications and his or her friends&' installed applications.StumbleUpon was launched out of Canada in 2002 and didna4a4t move to the San Francisco Bay Area until 2006. It was acquired by eBay a year later for $75 million. The San Francisco, Calif.-based company raised $1.5 million from Googlea4a4s founding investor, Ram Shriram, Lotus founder Mitch Kapor, Topic founder Ariel Poler, and angel investor Ron Conway.Android users can download the StumbleUpon application today.[Photo: magerleagues]Next Story: Microsoft marks launch of Kinect motion-control system with dance party in Times Square Previous Story: Zynga to launch its first Android social gamePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: app discovery, Discovery, website discoveryCompanies: Stumbleupon Tags: app discovery, Discovery, website discoveryCompanies: StumbleuponVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
