Duke Nukem Forever is coming to the U.S. on June 14.(Credit:2K Games)Duke Nukem Forever is finally ready to launch--after what seemed to some like an eternity."Duke Nukem Forever is the game that was once thought to be unshippable, and yet here we are, on the precipice of history," Christoph Hartmann, president of publisher 2K Games, said yesterday in a statement that may have contained just a tinge of hyperbole. "Today marks an amazing day in the annals of gaming lore, the day where the legend of Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete and it takes that final step towards becoming a reality."Duke Nukem Forever apparently works hard for its M rating.Duke Nukem Forever, which allows users to play the brash, obscenity-happy title character who wants to save the world from "pig cops, alien shrink rays, and enormous alien bosses," has become a bit of a running joke in the gaming business for its protracted delay. The game was first announced in 1997 as a follow-up to Duke Nukem 3D. After being delayed from its original 1998 release date, the game's developer at the time, 3D Realms, made several promises that it would be launched in subsequent years. Each time, those promises were broken, and many wondered whether the game would ever actually launch. Finally, last year, 2K Games announced it was working with a new developer, Gearbox Software, for the adults-oriented game and would deliver it to players this year. It initially hoped to get the game on store shelves by May 3, but it announced in March that it was forced to delay it once again to June."I'm very sorry for the added delay," Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford said in a statement at the time. "We've all been working extremely hard and are very eager to deliver the game to you."To help build hype for the game, 2K Games said it will offer a free demo starting June 3 to its Duke Nukem First Access Club Members. Users must have a unique access code to join the club. All others who want to (finally) get their hands on Duke Nukem Forever will have to wait a few more weeks. The game will ship internationally on June 10 and hit store shelves in North America on June 14. It will be available on theXbox 360,PlayStation 3, and PC. The title is rated M, for gamers 17 and older.

0 Vote(s)

Isilon&39's S-Series cluster (Credit:Isilon Systems)Apple is said to be beefing up its storage capacity with an order of storage equipment from Isilon Systems that tops out at 12 petabytes. The news, which was picked up by AppleInsider earlier today, comes from a source at Isilon who told site StorageNewsletter that Apple was the buyer, and was making the purchase to "manage the video download of its customers using iTunes." CNET has contacted Isilon for comment on the report. EMC announced plans to acquire Isilon five months ago for $2.25 billion, a 29 percent premium on the company's stock price at the time. The company is known for going after large-scale data management projects, and has customers like Sony and Kodak, as well as media companies like ABC and XM Satellite Radio. Before getting too excited that this is incontrovertible proof of Apple's plans to launch a storage locker for user content, it's worth noting Apple is still in the process of readying its North Caroline data center, which the company has stated will go online this spring. The company also has an existing data center facility in Newark, Calif., it purchased in 2006 that could be due for a new wave of hardware upgrades.According to a report published by Bernstein Research last month on Apple's upcoming data center, Apple spent an estimated $1.7 billion on IT assets during fiscal year 2010. That number, the report estimates, could jump up to $2.6 billion this year. The new North Carolina facility, which is said to be 500,000 square feet, can squeeze somewhere between 95,000 to 120,000 servers, something Bernstein said could "easily" cost hundreds of millions of dollars. StorageNewsletter's report says this 12-petabyte buy "probably" makes Apple the largest Isilon customer yet.

0 Vote(s)

Sprint is reportedly setting up a mobile payment network via cell phones, Bloomberg reported today. The carrier's Vice President of Product Platforms Kevin McGinnis told Bloomberg that Sprint phones will eventually have near-field communication (NFC) chips inside and those phones can be waved over a terminal installed in retail stores in order to pay for items.Items paid for via NFC will show up on a user's credit card statement, and not their cell phone bill. Sprint will likely not take a percentage of each transaction, but instead take a share of revenue generated from coupons or deals for certain retailers that users would have access to via the mobile payment system, according to the report.Related links&149' Report: Amazon exploring mobile payments via NFC&149' Samsung, Visa to give NFC payments a boost&149' Report: Google one step closer to mobile paymentsAll across the mobile ecosystem, companies are angling for a piece of the burgeoning mobile payments business, including wireless providers, smartphone manufacturers, credit card companies, retailers, and mobile advertisers. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon have already announced they've formed a joint-venture payment system called Isis, which is expected to be ready for mobile customers this fall. Both Amazon and Google are reportedly working on their own mobile payment networks for phones with NFC-enabled chips, and both Microsoft and Apple have reportedly been working on building phones with NFC chips inside.Later this year, Visa is also planning to roll out its own mobile payments system via phones called PayWave.Sprint did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the mobile payments service.

0 Vote(s)

The Wi-Fi Alliance is launching a campaign to urge consumers to configure routers and devices to use WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2) on all their wireless Wi-Fi equipment. "Wi-Fi security has gone through some evolutions over the years and WP2, which has been around now for a few years, is the latest and greatest in Wi-Fi security," Kelly Davis-Kelner of the Wi-Fi Alliance said in this podcast interview. WPA2, which offers government- and enterprise-grade security, is available in all products that the alliance has anointed as "WiFi Certified." The security standard replaces the original WPA and has stronger security than WPA and other protocols, including WEP (Wired Equivalent Protocol), which is still an option with most routers. WEP was introduced in 1997 and was largely supplanted by WPA and WPA2. Listen now:Download today's podcastSubscribe now: iTunes (audio) | RSS (audio)

0 Vote(s)

AtCES 2011 we saw several examples of a new kind of hybrid product that straddles the line between laptop andtablet. We're not talking about convertible laptops, which have been around for years and are generally Windows laptops with screens that rotate around and flip down over the keyboard. We're instead talking about slate-style tablets, commonly running Android, but also Windows, that add laptop-like features in an unexpected way, such as using a hidden slide-out keyboard. We saw examples of this design concept recently from Lenovo, Samsung, Asus, and others. The ones that stood out in particular (and you can see them all in the accompanying slideshow) were the Samsung Sliding PC 7, a Windows-based touch-screen tablet with a keyboard that slides out from behind the screen' the Asus Eee Slider, an Android tablet with a nearly flat keyboard the flips out from the rear of the system' and a nonworking Lenovo prototype with a slim keyboard that slides out from a slot on the bottom edge of the screen (as we demoed during our CES 2011 laptop talk show). In a slightly different vein, we also saw the return of Lenovo's U1 Hybrid, which is now a combination of Lenovo's Android LePad tablet and the U1 docking base. When attached to each other, the dock and tablet are transformed into a conventional Intel-powered windows laptop. The new generation of tablet/laptop hybrids (photos) That last example may fall a little outside our scope for this specific question, but it depends on where the lines of the category are drawn. What should one call a tablet with a sliding or foldout keyboard A laptab A keylet A tabtop A keyvertible We're throwing the door open to nominations. Vote in the nonscientific poll presented, or suggest your own category name in the comments section below. We'll take the best ideas and run them up against each other in a follow-up survey.

0 Vote(s)

Run, Athlete, run like the wind.(Credit:Video screenshot by Leslie Katz/CNET)We've seen running bipedal robots before, but they tend to move like, well, robots. Ryuma Niiyama of MIT's Robot Locomotion Group wants to build a bot that runs as much like a human as possible, right down to the black nylon running shorts. The robot, aptly named Athlete, sports an artificial musculoskeletal system that mirrors human muscles in the leg, hip, lower abdomen, and booty and has a springy elastic blade foot like those seen on prosthetic running legs. Niiyama's goal is a flexible, agile robot with less of a mechanical gait and more of a Usain Bolt-type stride. Athlete has seven sets of actuator-driven artificial muscles in each leg, plus touch sensors on each foot and an inertial measurement unit on the torso for detecting the body's orientation. It does not, as far as we know, take steroids. Niiyama--who also worked on Mowgli the bipedal jumping robot--developed Athlete as a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Tokyo's Department of Mechano-Informatics along with with colleagues Satoshi Nishikawa and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. They presented their research last week at the IEEE Humanoids 2010 conference in Nashville, Tenn. But the champion sprinters of the world shouldn't worry just yet. With the aid of a harness hung from the ceiling, Athlete can currently take up to five steps at about 3.9 feet per second, but then it falls down. Hey, robots get muscle cramps too.
Writing about green cars can be a challenge. On the one hand, this site attracts many new-car buyers who want to learn more about more fuel-efficient alternatives to what they&'re driving now. Consider the Ford Explorer driver who bought a Honda Fit because it was really all he needed. But on the other hand, it has a significant readership of green advocates who often seem to believe that driving anything other than the most fuel-efficient vehicle you can buy is a moral crime. It&'s for them that we provide this gentle dose of reality, albeit with a needlessly provocative title.1. Size and mass require more energy to moveIn auto markets all over the world, drivers buy the largest vehicle they think they can afford to run. The bigger the vehicle, the heavier it is (despite all-aluminum luxury sedans like the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ).The heavier it is, the more energy it takes to move. Not everyone will drive the smallest vehicle they fit into. Nor should they, because &8230'2. Some families really DO need seven seatsThere really are families with three, four, five, even six or more children. They need family vehicles. And that doesn&'t even get into the Little League coaches, the parents roped into carting athletic teams around, or just those play dates with multiple kids.Families need bigger vehicles. Period. And a Mazda5 minivan, as admirable a vehicle as it is, just won&'t cut it.(3) Some buyers tow very heavy thingsEven ignoring work trucks, a remarkable number of Americans own fifth-wheel trailers, or haul motorcycles or ATVs or snowmobiles around on trailers, or tow 7,500-pound boats four hours each way to the lake house every other weekend.Let&'s be clear: It&'s a way of life that&'s utterly alien to the rest of the world. But in parts of the U.S., the wherewithal to tow a large boat to a weekend house defines middle-class life. It means nothing to the average Chinese first-time car buyer&8211'who provides the growth in global car markets&8211'but as John Mellencamp sang, &''Ain&'t that America&''4. There&'ll always be a low end of the scaleAs fleet average gas mileage moves toward 34 mpg in 2016, there&'ll be cars that do better than that&8211'battery electric vehicles that use no gasoline at all&8211'and vehicles that do worse. We&'ll still have seven- and eight-seat crossovers in 2016. While their fuel efficiency will likely be a lot higher than today&'s crop deliver (a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse AWD is rated at 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway), they&'ll still be a lot lower than the compact sedans that deliver 40 mpg today, and probably better mileage yet by then.Which will make those full-size crossovers gas guzzlers. Relatively.5. There&'ll always be a Texas Texans really love their trucks. Big commercial-grade pickup trucks. Turbodiesel trucks. And Chevrolet Suburbans, which for many years sold half their production in Texas alone. Renting a compact car in Texas is an exercise in repeatedly losing your vehicle because you can&'t see it among the parked trucks.Yes, Texans (and many other Americans) drive long distances. But not every Texan needs a truck to go from a gated suburban community to the nearest mini-mall or high school. Perhaps it&'s the state&'s history as the former source of much of this nation&'s crude oil.We hope it&'s not a representative sample, but more Texans have sneered to us at the idea of using less gasoline than residents of any other state. You almost get the sense that Texans take a perverse pride in using as much gasoline as possible. It&'s some kind of cultural indicator of manhood or something, except that Texan women drive pickups too.Texas Governor Rick Perry may be the only one of 50 governors to call out the Toyota Prius hybrid by name just to sneer at it. (He was wrong' it holds five bales of hay.) He also accused the EPA of &''preparing to undo decades of progress&'' and &''destroying hundreds of thousands of jobs.&''Paradoxically, Texas also produces lots of renewable energy, and would benefit from natural-gas vehicles, given regional supplies. But we suspectTexans will consume more gasoline per mile driven long after mileage standards tighten.(We welcome Texans to weigh in with opposing viewpoints, by the way. Please leave them in the comments below.)Written by John Voelcker, this post originally appeared on GreenCarReports.com, one of VentureBeat&'s editorial partners.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: MiaSol snared in patent suit, Nissan to show off electric sports car Previous Story: RAV4 EV not the only Tesla-powered SUV: Tesla&'s &8216'Model X&' due in 2014PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: electric cars, electric vehicles, green carsCompanies: Audi, Chevrolet, ford, Honda, Jaguar, Mazda, ToyotaPeople: Rick Perry Tags: electric cars, electric vehicles, green carsCompanies: Audi, Chevrolet, ford, Honda, Jaguar, Mazda, ToyotaPeople: Rick Perry Have news to share Launching a startup Email: tips@venturebeat.comVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
