WALTHAM, Mass.--Living off the grid to be in touch with nature may have once been the height of environmentalism, but urban areas are increasingly taking the lead on environmental issues.A panel here at the TieCon East conference discussed "smart communities" in an attempt to define the term and whether it offers business opportunities for technology entrepreneurs. For the most part, panelists said forward-looking cities offer ways to test out new products, but the smart-community notion remains hazy in its definition because it covers so many areas. There are many examples of cities that have made a priority of environmental sustainability and enacted a wide range of policies, such as building-efficiency programs or tree planting to capture storm water runoff. This week in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the C40, made up of many of the world's largest cities, published a report listing the strategies it has devised to mitigate the effects of climate change (PDF).Boston University professor Nathan Phillips (on right, speaking) talks to students from a local school about monitoring carbon dioxide and the exchange of CO2 between trees and emitters, such as vehicles.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET )In the U.S., efforts have mostly touched on energy as well as waste and water, but food will increasingly be a consideration, said Galen Nelson, green tech business manager at the Boston Redevelopment Authority. San Diego, for example, has a multiyear plan to improve sustainability, with the first wave around building an electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. The island of Maui in Hawaii, which relies heavily on imported diesel fuel for electricity, has a goal of converting to 40 percent renewable electricity by 2030. For the most part, the technology for making smarter communities is available, but there are many regulatory, social, and financial challenges. For example, Nelson showed an image of the iconic Boston "triple decker"--a three-story, multifamily home--and said it could be retrofitted with improved recycling, smart meters to improve energy efficiency, solar power on the rooftop, and storm water recycling. But installing these products doesn't always have a rapid financial payback, even though there are environmental benefits. Utilities, for example, can make the electricity grid more reliable and energy efficient by using information provided by smart meters, but investing in meters solely based on energy savings has proved difficult in many cases."The main challenge is that the traditional sense of payback generally doesn't meet the normal hurdle rates," said Jeff Connelly, the vice president of engineering at GE Water and Process Technologies. Investments to improve energy efficiency in commercial buildings is an active area because the financial benefits are the most compelling, compared with residential buildings, said Alistair Pim, vice president of strategic alliances at Schneider Electric. GE is looking for companies that have low-energy water-purification members because energy can be about half the operating cost of water treatment plants, said Connelly. But there's a lot more that can be done beyond efficiency. Boston has done maps measuring the solar potential of buildings, which has helped building owners quickly understand how solar can be used. It's even determined areas that are good candidates for distributed energy generation by using organic waste-fueled anaerobic digesters. "It is fragmented, but these issues are not going away, so you have to play across a number of different fronts to stay contemporary with the issues," GE's Connelly said.Ultimately, smart communities comes down to policies, and the lack of long-term federal policies to encourage alternatives to fossil fuels holds back progress, panelists said. "One of the big challenges is thinking big," said Boston's Nelson. "Fifty years ago we built the national highway system. 150 years ago it was the Erie Canal. Where is the drive to build the smart grid of tomorrow that will drive the economy, and who is going to pay for it"

0 Vote(s)

Intel has updated its price list with new dual-core Sandy Bridge chips--some likely bound for Apple MacBooks and just about every PC vendor on the planet. Upcoming MacBook Pros will include dual-core Sandy Bridge processors. Most of the Sandy Bridge chips shipped to date have been quad-core. (Credit:Apple)The chipmaker yesterday added i3, mobile i5, and mobile Core i7 dual-core chips to the Sandy Bridge family. Many of the initial Sandy Bridge processors listed--and shipped--back in January were quad-core only. A low-power i5-2537M (1.4GHz) and standard-power i5-2540M and i5-2520M mobile chips have been added to the current crop of i5 processors. They are priced at $250, $266, and $225, respectively, in thousand unit quantities. A sizable cluster of new dual-core i7 mobile processors includes the i7-2620M (2.7GHz), i7-2649M (2.3GHz) and i7-2657M (1.6GHz). Those are priced at $346, $346 (also) and $317, respectively. The new i3 processors include the i3-2120 (3.3GHz) and i3-2100 (3.1GHz). They are set at $138 and $117, respectively. Apple is expected to announce new MacBook Pros soon that will gorge on the fresh smorgasbord of dual-core Sandy Bridge delicacies. Pros--introduced in April last year--have been using last-generation Core i5 and i7 processors. Launched at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Sandy Bridge--or "Second Generation Intel Core Processor"--is the first mainstream Intel chip to integrate graphics silicon directly onto the processor. It is also the first chip line based fully on Intel's leading-edge 32-nanometer manufacturing process. These two features allow Intel to offer a power-efficient processor with improved multimedia and gaming capabilities. Intel has resumed shipments of Sandy Bridge chipsets as it seeks to put a minor issue with the chipset behind it. "There was a slight delay. We have changed some of our ship schedules," Ross Compton, a market manager at Lenovo's ThinkPad laptop group, told CNET today. He said the delay was measured in "weeks." See the updated Intel price here (PDF). Note that Sandy Bridge processors can be identified by the 2XXX numbering scheme--seen as a suffix to the i3, i5, and i7 identifiers. Intel has also listed other new desktop processors in addition to the Core i3s cited above. Updated at 7:35 p.m. PST: correcting for Core i3 processors. The new i3s are desktop, not mobile processors.

0 Vote(s)

LG Optimus 3D will be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011(Credit:AndroidCommunity)As we speculated last week, LG is indeed going to unveil a 3D smartphone at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Much like the Nintendo 3DS, the LG Optimus 3D won't require glasses for 3D viewing. LG promises a "complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience" as well as HDMI and DLNA connections for content sharing, presumably to a 3D-capable television. Aside from that, we don't know too much about the phone. There's some speculation that it'll have a 4-inch+ display, along with a dual-core processor and multi-channel RAM. I have to say I'm not too excited about a 3D smartphone (I share Scott Webster's sentiment on the subject), but I am impressed to see LG as a pioneer in the field. Fortunately, CNET will be at Mobile World Congress, and we'll be sure to get a look at it and perhaps other 3D smartphones too.
(Credit:Mozilla)Mozilla has released its first alpha version of Thunderbird 3.3, an update to the e-mail software code-named Miramar that drops support for PowerPC-basedMac. Miramar is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The new software includes the Gecko browser engine used inFirefox, and with version 3.3, Thunderbird moves to the Gecko 2.0 engine that's the core of the upcoming Firefox 4. Firefox 4 is dropping support for Macs using PowerPC processors, too, to ease the arrival of new features such as a more secure and crash-proof plug-in design.Apple announced its intention to drop PowerPC chips in June 2005 and released only an Intel version of its current operating system Mac OS X 10.6, aka Snow Leopard. But older machines inevitably linger in the real world. For those customers, software companies often maintain older versions of their software for a time.According to the Miramar release notes published yesterday, one aspect of Thunderbird 3.3 is "support for Mac 32/64 bit Universal builds (Miramar Alpha 1 will no longer support PowerPC on Mac)."Also coming: the new software also gets updated interfaces for managing add-ons and extensions, the ability to show the size of files being downloads, user interface improvements on Windows Vista andWindows 7, and many stability and performance improvements. The current version of Thunderbird is 3.1.6. Mozilla is still debating whether to release Thunderbird 3.2, which would include an earlier version of the Gecko browser engine.Firefox is the better known and more widely used software from Mozilla, but the Thunderbird group is working to make its software more useful. In particular, there's a long list of Thunderbird experiments designed to bring fresh ideas to the software. Those ideas include Thunderbird Sync, to synchronize user information across versions of the software installed on different machines' Contacts for Thunderbird to ingest contact data from Web services such as Facebook' data miners to extract useful information such as package shipping numbers from e-mail' and Thunderbird Air to revamp the user interface for small Netbook screens. In addition, according to notes from a planning meeting yesterday, Thunderbird programmers are working on a feature to emulate Gmail's conversation view, which compresses back-and-forth e-mail discussions into a single item.

0 Vote(s)

If you're a Netflix subscriber, you should be happy with the sounds coming out of Hollywood. One entertainment executive told me last week that other Web video companies looking for content should use Netflix as a model for how to work with the major studios. He called the company a "good partner," high praise coming from an industry in which few have anything good to say about Internet companies. This bodes well for Netflix's chances of obtaining more streaming content. When it comes to the studios' complaints about Netflix, there's also something positive to be found. "While there are things in the Netflix system that are clearly cannibalistic [to sales], there are things we can change," Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Pictures' home entertainment unit, said during a conference appearance earlier this month. "They can pay us more, or we can reduce the quality of what we give them."Kornblau obviously doesn't think that Netflix paid enough for content it licensed in several high-profile deals with the studios this year. That may mean trouble in the future, but Kornblau's statement, coming so soon after Netflix landed the licensing agreements, also suggests that the company's ability to acquire content isn't solely dependent on the size of its checks. Netflix appears to have more to bargain with than just cash. The hit rental service is now the supreme power in U.S. video rentals. It has put itself in that position by building one of the most loyal followings and strongest brands of any digital-entertainment company. Netflix is respected by consumers for doing away with the much-loathed late fees, offering low prices, and providing one of the best viewer experiences online. Netflix has also stood out among Silicon Valley companies for its willingness to partner with the studios. "It's not just about writing the big check," Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, said in a recent interview with CNET. "A lot of people have written big checks and didn't get what they needed." It's our goal to be embedded into the studios' business and understand what drives their decision making.--Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, NetflixOne of the best stories in digital entertainment this year is how Netflix built up its streaming-video library against the odds. It wasn't long ago that pundits predicted that Netflix would be unable to pay the studios' rates and would see its supply of streaming content cut off. The naysayers argued that Netflix would go bankrupt or alienate subscribers by forcing steep price increases on them. So far, the company has defied the doubters. Embedded in Hollywood For tech companies, acquiring rights to film and TV content has proven to be a challenge. For instance, the four major broadcast networks have blocked Google TV from accessing their Web content. To some studio insiders, the Silicon Valley guys were just the latest hustlers to come to town. The Web video companies were either devising software or sites to pirate or port in films and TV shows, or were dismissive of the studios' digital strategies. YouTube employees once famously referred to the video portal created by NBC Universal and News Corp. as the "clown company." It turned out to be Hulu.A high-handed attitude isn't what Reed Hastings wanted. Netflix's CEO, named "Business Person of the Year" last week by Fortune magazine, handed Sarandos a very different mission in Hollywood. "Unlike the companies that [tried to strike partnerships with the studios] before, we didn't make the mistake of relegating relationships to agents and lawyers to broker deals," Sarandos said in a recent interview with CNET. "The same way we don't outsource our [intellectual property], we don't outsource our relationships...It's our goal to be embedded into the studios' business and understand what drives their decision making. We do our best to be good partners." Ted Sarandos, Netflix&39's content chief. (Credit:Netflix)The close Hollywood ties help Netflix managers find ways to help the studios, as well as themselves. One example involves the recent decline in sales of DVD box sets. Many TV shows aren't selling well on DVD, even as the costs of producing one-hour serialized shows go up, Sarandos said. When it comes to syndication, a dramatic series that includes more adult themes, such as Showtime's "Dexter" or Fox's "Lie to me," are traditionally a tough sell. One issue with most serialized shows is that if viewers miss an episode, they fall behind in the story. Netflix's streaming service is one solution. Users don't have to worry about falling behind. They choose which episode to watch and when. Netflix also impressed many at the studios by agreeing to help protect DVD sales. Earlier this year, the Los Gatos, Calif.-based company agreed to delay renting some of the studios' newly released DVDs until 28 days after their titles hit store shelves. In return, Netflix received access to more TV shows and films for its streaming service. Blockbuster and Netflix data There are other, more practical reasons for strong Netflix-Hollywood ties: Blockbuster is all but gone. The brick-and-mortar retail chain, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September, was a big source of revenue for the studios. And just as DVD sales plummet, Hollywood's attempt to persuade consumers to upgrade film collections to Blu-ray discs has largely failed. The studios know that Netflix, with its 17 million subscribers, can help fill these holes. More importantly, the studios know the trend in renting movies is to do it online. If there's a better way than Netflix for the studios to stake out prime digital turf, it hasn't presented itself. And then there's all that customer data. Eric Garland, CEO and co-founder of Big Champagne, a company that tracks digital-media consumption, argues that Netflix's greatest advantage--indeed, one of the things that appeals most to Hollywood--is what it knows about its customers' renting and viewing habits. "Netflix is cleaning up because they started seeing changes in consumer behavior before consumers knew they changed their behavior," Garland said. During the period before it started offering streaming content on demand, for example, Netflix noticed that its subscribers had already started to slow down the volume of their DVD viewing. "We were updating the queues, we were creating the lists, but that ping-pong of DVDs going back and forth in the mail had started to slow. You didn't know what that meant. You were busy going 'Ah, I need to watch that DVD, but I don't want to watch it tonight.' You put it back down. What they saw was that you needed better and more immediate access to more titles," Garland said. "That's old news now, but they've been in possession of that for years. So the reason that Netflix is of such strategic value to Hollywood is that they already own the new consumer who doesn't want to bother with the disc."Correction 8:37 a.m. PTThis story incorrectly stated the number of Netflix's subscribers. Netflix currently has 16.9 million subscribers.

0 Vote(s)

I&'m not sure what took so long, but Amazon today finally announced the ability to gift Kindle ebooks to anyone &8212' just as you would any other product or service from Amazon&'s online store. The company says that the Kindle is &''the most gifted item in the history of Amazon.com&'' but is still mum on specific sales numbers. While this announcement may help Amazon sell even more Kindles, the company stresses that no Kindle is required to enjoy its ebooks. If anything, the feature is a reminder to consumers that they can read Kindle Books on a variety of platforms &8212' including the iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry phones, as well as on Macs and Windows PCs.To gift a Kindle Book, you simply need to choose the &''Give as a Gift&'' option for any book in the Kindle Store, and then send the gift to anyone with an email address. It&'s unclear what&'s kept Amazon from launching this ebook giving feature for so long. The company has sold boatloads of Kindles since it announced cheaper models in July, which makes me think the ebook gifting feature would have been wildly successful had it launched earlier. For now, the news will serve as a way to remind people that Kindle ebooks (and Kindle devices) make great gifts &8212' and it may deflect attention away from Barnes and Noble&'s recently announced Nook Color. Amazon also recently announced that it will be offering 14-day ebook lending to Kindle users.Next Story: Groupon needs the human touch, not Google&'s robots Previous Story: Cox launches mobile phone service to combat AT&038'T, VerizonPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: books, ebooks, ecommerce, kindle, NookCompanies: Amazon, Barnes And Noble Tags: books, ebooks, ecommerce, kindle, NookCompanies: Amazon, Barnes And NobleDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
The Gillmor Gang took advantage of the presence of multiple Android lovers to provide a visceral demonstration of the anti-Jobs reality distortion field. Namely, that no matter how many new Android phones hit the market at 2 week intervals, none is actually better than the iPhone. Michael Arrington went a step further, declaring that Android tablets were destined for instant has-been status once the next iPad ships in February or so. Robert Scoble succeeded in proving Flipboard may be Steve Jobs&' favorite iPad app but still remains useless until they open up. Danny Sullivan wondered how you get into their Tech media section, but why he would care with his iPad sitting unused most of the time.Gillmor&'s theory is that the death of Delicious at the hands of the drowning Yahoo represents capitulation to Twitter&'s domination of what once was called bookmarking and now social citation. Kevin Marks saw a lineage between Delicious, Facebook, and Twitter, but Arrington was more interested in details on a story his team was writing about an alleged Salesforce investment in Seesmic.
