The Linksys E3200's Connect software now includes a handy Speed Test tool.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)A short while ago, I gave the Editors' Choice Award to the Asus RT-N56U. At the time I thought, "It's gonna be some time before there's another router that comes close." I was wrong. Cisco's new Linksys E3200 High Performance Dual-Band N Router, which we just reviewed, makes a great contender as another excellent, true dual-band router that won't break your bank. As a matter of fact, if it were just a little cheaper and offered better built-in network storage performance, it would get an Editors' Choice Award as well.Released at the same time as the rest of the members in the new Linksys E series, including the supercompact and affordable E1500, the E3200 is a stylish, high-end, well-rounded router. It's really good looking, and offers fast wireless speed and long range.Like the rest in the E series, it comes with Cisco Connect software that make setting up and network management a no-brainer for even the most technologically challenged users. On the other hand, it doesn't leave savvy users in the cold, either. They can just skip the software and use its robust and responsive Web interface to take advantage of its advanced features. At a street price of around $140-$150, the E3200 is about $10-$20 more expensive than the equally eye-catching Asus RT-N56U. Unfortunately, its built-in network storage feature, which allows people to share data off an external hard drive plugged into its USB port, doesn't perform as well as that of the Asus.To find out why you'd still want to have one for yourself, however, check out the full review here.

0 Vote(s)

The Gemini FirstMix is a baby step into the DJ world.(Credit:Donald Bell/CNET) Young and broke. That pretty much sums up the DJ chapter in my life. Aside from the handful of celebrity DJs out there, most of us start out with only a few bucks, a love of music, and the goal of someday playing an unforgettable party. It is with these humble roots in mind that Gemini created the FirstMix. A combination of USB hardware and cross-platform software, the $99 FirstMix system gives newbies an inexpensive entry point into DJ stardom. As DJ rigs go, there isn't much to it. The hardware is a plastic slab with a toy-like feel, a crossfader, some knobs, and two jog wheel controls dressed up like little virtual turntables. The overall feel is about what you'd expect for the price. The sensitivity and responsiveness of the controls is impressive, though.A single attached USB cable sticks out from the back, and you can connect it to either aMac or PC. There are no audio outputs or inputs, just a USB plug for sending MIDI control data to the software (or any MIDI-capable program). On the software end, you get a basic version of MixVibes Cross. The music library pulls in your iTunes collection or lets you browse folders manually. Compatible formats include AAC, AIFF, WAV, MP3, FLAC, and OGG. Waveforms of each track appear at the top of the screen, allowing you to eyeball intros and breakdowns, and giving you a general sense of the BPM. You'll also find some useful controls for EQ, effects, and beat synchronization, including automatic beat matching.Once you've practiced your mix, you can record it into the software and export it as a WAV or MP3. After that, all you need is a worshipful audience of DJ fanatics and you're home free.Gemini FirstMix DJ system (photos)

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's acquisition of Widevine, a company that helps secure digital video, could make Google more attractive to Hollywood. (Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)At a time when Google is attempting to bolster it's Web-video offerings, the company has agreed to acquire Widevine, a firm that provides digital-rights management and video distribution software.Widevine's customers come from film studios, cable systems, and Web TV, Google said today on the company's blog. "By forging partnerships across the entire ecosystem, Widevine has made on-demand services more efficient and secure for media companies," Google wrote. Financial terms were not disclosed. A company that specializes in digital-rights management could come in handy for Google. The search engine is trying to license TV shows and films for YouTube's video rental store as well as for Google TV. The studios and networks have told Web video distributors that securing their content is a must if they want licensing deals. Last month, Ted Sarandos, the Netflix exec in charge of acquiring content, told me the studios were perhaps overly concerned with protecting content. He suggested that the concern perhaps didn't match the actual threat. Consumers have shown that they want a high-quality viewing experience, a good price, and a "convenient distribution model, he said. Still, Hollywood insists distributors adhere to very specific security requirements. On another front, the acquisition also coincides with an announcement yesterday from the company that it will step up antipiracy measures. Google will now remove links to pirated material within 24 hours of being notified and will boot out AdSense members found to be trafficking in piracy. News of a possible acquisition first leaked out last month at the blog Xconomy.

0 Vote(s)

LEXINGTON, Mass.--Energy Secretary Steven Chu toured tiny solar company 1366 Technologies here today, holding it up as an example of success in the ARPA-E program and the importance of federal funding for energy research.Chu toured the labs of 1366 Technologies, a company spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008 to bring the price of solar power down to the price of coal, after briefing incoming members of Congress at the Harvard Kennedy School of government in nearby Cambridge.Steven Chu during a media briefing, after touring 1366 Technologies in Lexington, Mass.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)1366 Technologies received a $4 million grant from the ARPA-E program, which enabled it to attract private capital to bring its "direct wafer" technology closer to commercialization. That manufacturing technology promises to cut the cost of making photovoltaic solar cells in half. 1366 typifies the innovation that American scientists and engineers are capable of, Chu said. The United States should invest more in energy research because innovation in clean energy technologies will fuel economic growth, as the world transitions to cleaner sources of energy and more effective uses of energy, he said.Echoing comments he made during his "Sputnik moment" speech three days ago at the National Press Club, Chu said he is "alarmed" to see the rapid pace of technical advancement in energy, compared to the U.S., that he saw during a trip to China."Despite these threats, I still maintain--and 1366 is one of the prime examples of this--that the innovative brilliance of Americans...when set in the right direction, when given 'This is where we want to go as a country,' need not be afraid of any other country and any outside technology. They can do this and compete...and not only compete but prevail convincingly," Chu said. But even as Chu remains bullish on American ingenuity in energy, the ARPA-E program faces a funding challenge after next year.ARPA-E is modeled after DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the U.S. military research agency that yielded the Internet and many other technologies. The mandate at ARPA-E is high-risk, high-reward energy research projects done within three to five years. It was created in 2007 but not funded until April of last year, when it received $400 million through the stimulus program. Energy secretary tours solar disrupter (photos) Because ARPA-E was not part of the Department of Energy budget last year, Congress will need to fund the agency beyond its first two years for it to continue, according to an Energy Department representative.Chu said the prospects of having continued funding are good. A number of high-profile reports done by business leaders have recommended increasing ARPA-E's budget, an indicator of how people from different fields--venture capitalists, universities, national labs, large corporations--appreciate what ARPA-E has done, he said."There's almost unanimous enthusiastic appreciation for what ARPA-E has done. So even as we approach austere budget times, its value is certainly widely appreciated," Chu said.Wafer manufacturingThe tour Chu was offered included technical presentations on both disclosed and secretive work of the 30 or so engineers at 1366 Technologies. The company has developed a few manufacturing techniques for incremental improvements in polycrystalline solar cell efficiency. One is a texturing machine that treats the surface of a silicon wafer so that it reduces reflectivity and traps more light. Another is to use a substrate that reflects light back onto the surface of a cell. 1366 Technologies' breakthrough idea, however, is called Direct Wafer, a technology enabling a machine to produce a silicon wafer at half the cost of existing techniques. Solar manufacturers take flat 6-inch by 6-inch silicon wafers and, through various steps, create solar cells that are fitted onto a module, or panel.Typically, manufacturers take ingots of raw silicon and saw them to make wafers, a process in which a lot of the silicon is lost. 1366 Technologies is working on a prototype of a machine that can produce that wafer directly from melted silicon. The machine is a furnace like those used in typical wafer manufacturing, but it "freezes" the molten silicon into shape, explained Adam Lorenz, senior photovoltaics engineer. Because this process cuts the cost of wafer manufacturing in half, U.S. companies can afford to make wafers, which are mostly made in China and Germany, he said.1366 Technologies CEO Frank van Mierlo said the company hopes to complete engineering work on the machine next year and break ground on a 100-megawatt wafer-manufacturing facility by the end of next year. The plant would take a year to build, and 1366 expects to apply for a loan guarantee from the Energy Department for construction, van Mierlo said.A 100-megawatt facility is far smaller than commercial plants, but it would eliminate any technical risk, he said.

0 Vote(s)

Electric car startup Coda has hired Phil Murtaugh, a former General Motors executive with a boatload of experience launching cars, as the company&'s permanent CEO to oversee the launch of its first domestic electric-powered sedan. This marks a new and crucial chapter for Coda. The company is preparing to launch its first-ever offering, a five-seat electric car sedan slated to arrive later this year, raise another $125 million pre-IPO ($76 million of that round has been raised so far) and move forward with an IPO, possibly this year. It plans to sell 14,000 cars in the first year of release, a goal that has some analysts skeptical. The company went through an executive shakeup of sorts right before it announced it would delay its original launch plans.Coda has been seeking a CEO since previous chief executive Kevin Czinger stepped down in a surprise move in November, just a few days after their senior vice president of global sales stepped down. At the same time, the company added COO to the duties of then newly-hired CFO Mark Jamieson.Murtaugh has more than 30 years experience working for General Motors. He served as executive vice president of GM in Shanghai and later as the chief executive of GM&'s China operations. He then worked with Chrysler as their senior vice president in charge of Asia operations until the most recent economic recession hit, forcing Chrysler to limit its operations in Asia. Murtaugh served as a consultant for various automotive companies until Coda hired him as the company&'s chief executive.Coda does have plans to sell its electric vehicles in China after the cars launch domestically, Murtaugh said. Coda has a joint venture in China for car batteries with Chinese battery cell maker Lishen Power Battery.Murtaugh&'s extensive background working with car launches in China and his relationships with battery manufacturers there made him a natural pick to ramp up the company&'s efforts internationally, the company&'s interim CEO Mac Heller said. Murtaugh even said Coda was in a very similar position to the one GM was in when it was first making its way into China with a car launch just around the corner and a need to form joint ventures with parts providers.&''A vast majority of the manufacturing operations in Coda are going to be China-based,&'' Murtaugh said.As part of the arrangement, Heller will step down and become the company&'s executive chairman. He said he will still remain highly active in Coda&'s day-to-day operations. Heller took the gig in early November when Goldman Sachs-bred Kevin Czinger resigned. The other focus for Coda under Murtaugh&'s guidance will be expanding its grid storage business, which he said could be as large a business as Coda&'s auto-manufacturing arm.Murtaugh also said Coda plans to open its own retail outlets in &''high visibility&'' areas rather than distribute the company&'s electric cars through other retail outlets. The locations will be in areas with a lot of foot traffic, and those interested in buying a Coda-manufactured electric vehicle can also schedule appointments online to visit and try out the cars or order them directly online.Coda delayed the release of its sedan, which was initially to debut last month and go head-to-head with Big Auto contenders like the all-electric Nissan Leaf and partially electric Chevrolet Volt. The Coda sedan is a bit pricier than other electric vehicles on the market a4" at $45,000 before state and federal tax credits, it&'s $12,000 more expensive than the Leaf. But Coda is hoping to do strong business in fleet sales to meet its rather aggressive sales target of 14,000 vehicles sold in the first year of production.Coda&'s fourth round of funding is also on the way and a bit ahead of schedule, with the company securing just over $75 million before Christmas, Heller said. Coda is ramping up its fundraising efforts to finish up the round, which will be worth around $125 million. This brings the total raised to $201 million.Next Story: Facebook confirms $1.5B funding, leaves $500M on the table Previous Story: Duke Nukem Forever finally gets a release date a4" 14 years and 2 companies laterPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Companies: Coda, GM, Lishen Power BatteryPeople: Kevin Czinger, Mac Heller, Mark Jamieson, Phil Murtaugh Companies: Coda, GM, Lishen Power BatteryPeople: Kevin Czinger, Mac Heller, Mark Jamieson, Phil MurtaughMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
When Viacom decided to sell music game developer Harmonix, it was a pretty good indication that it didn&'t think Harmonix was doing a good job spurring innovation in the genre. But now it&'s clear Viacom has no confidence in the music game genre as a whole, as Harmonix will retain the rights to itsRock Band and Dance Central intellectual property after being sold off.Viacom decided to dump the music game developer after it failed to generate the same kind of revenue the music game genre has been able to bring in for the past several years. Harmonix led to about a $316 million loss in the first nine months of 2010, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Viacom stands to make up to $200 million by offloading the liabilities and rights of both series to Harmonix, making up at least part of that loss.A lot of Harmonix&'s problems have to do with the failure of the music game industry as a whole, which has stagnated since ballooning in the mid 2000s. Music games generated $152 million so far this year in the U.S., down 50 percent from a year ago, according to Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter. In 2009, music games generated $875 million in sales. Sluggish music game sales have been the largest drag on video game sales this year so far, which are down about 8 percent from 2009.Harmonix&'s first batch of intellectual property, Guitar Hero, was left with Activision-Blizzard when the company changed hands to Viacom. Activision-Blizzard took off with the franchise, releasing multiple versions of the game and becoming the main competitor for Harmonix&'s Rock Band series. But that franchise has largely stood in the shadows of Harmonix&'s Rock Band series, seeing less success with critics.Rock Band 3 was actually hit with critics, but that wasn&'t enough to save the company from being sold off. The game garnered a score of 93 out of 100 across 46 reviews on Metacritic, a website that aggregates review scores for games, music and movies. The Rock Band series as a whole has been a bright point in the music game industry, but even then the games have been criticized for failing to innovate and take the genre in a new direction.Viacom&'s sale of Harmonix was enough of a shot at the music game industry, but giving away the intellectual property to the game, which can still generate additional revenue from the sale of downloaded tracks, is basically a vote of zero confidence for the genre. Harmonix has said that the release of new licensed music for the game won&'t be affected. But without the support of Viacom and MTV to help the company pick up new artists, Rock Band 3 may very well be Harmonixa4a4s last stand.Next Story: Is Skype about to release video calling for mobile devices Previous Story: Shopping startup EcoMom raises $2M from Facebook exec and othersPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Guitar Hero, music games, Rock BandCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Harmonix, Viacom Tags: Guitar Hero, music games, Rock BandCompanies: Activision Blizzard, Harmonix, ViacomMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
As we noted earlier today, Google has wasted little time getting their Cr-48 Chrome notebook machines in users&' hands. Less than two days after Google unveiled the device, there are a ton of reports of users getting them. Humorously, some people who thought they signed up for Chrome stickers are also receiving them a4" quite a bonus! But the Cr-48 hasn&'t been a totallya4spleasanta4ssurprise.A number of reports have come in saying that trying to play Flash videos and apps on the device more or less sucks. The experience ranges from buggy to not working at all, apparently. This includes YouTube, Hulu, Vimeo, CNN a4" basically all of major video sites on the web. Now, it has to be noted that Google has made it very clear that the Cr-48 is meant to be a test machine. It&'s not ready for mass production. Plus, it shouldn&'t be too surprising that the processor inside, an Intel Atom, can&'t fully run Flash. That said, Google has also made it very clear that Flash is an important part of Chrome (and Chrome OS). In fact, it&'s baked-in.a4sYou have no choice but to have it installed.Yes, you can disable the plug-in through Chrome, but unlike Apple&'s mobile devices, the fall-back is basically non-existent.Apple made waves when they decided not to include Flash on their new MacBook Airs, but there&'s no denying that the machines run much more smoothly (both in terms of battery life and web browsing performance) without it. Maybe Google should consider following a similar route when the first consumer-ready Chrome notebooks roll out.CrunchBase InformationGoogle Chrome OSAdobe FlashInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Yesterday brought the news that eBay acquired in-store product inventory search startup Milo for $75 million. eBay said that it plans to integrate Milo into both its online marketplace and its mobile applications, including barcode scanning app RedLaser. But tucked away in the press release eBay issued about the acquisition were a few surprising stats about the number of product searches eBay and its competitors are handling.According to comScore, eBay handled more than 2 billion U.S. product searches in the third quarter. For the same time period, Amazon saw 847 million searches, while Google handled only 226 million product searches. Really The data seems a bit surprising considering Amazon&'s dominance in the e-commerce market. In fact, comScore reported in its 2010 Q3 State of the U.S. Online Retail Economy report, that Amazon had the largest audience in the quarter, averaging 78 million monthly unique visits, surpassing Apple, Walmart and Target. eBay, which comScore said was the top auction site for the quarter, had 68.9 million unique monthly visits, which was down 3 percent from last year. But apparently, there is a lot more product searching going on there than on Amazon. Google&'s low product searches are less surprising considering that its product search isn&'t nearly as expansive as Amazon&'s. And Google doesn&'t actually sell products. That being said, Google just launched major improvements to its product search (including more local inventory listings), which should help draw more traffic and searches. For eBay, the wealth of data from product searches is certainly something that could be mined and used for recommendations, and other products. We asked Google for comment on eBay&'s stats, and received this response: &''We typically don&'t share performance metrics for individual search properties.&''We&'ve also contacted Amazon for comment, we&'ll update when we hear back (though the company has notoriously had an aversion to providing specific numbers (i.e. Kindle sales).
