In the new book The Birth of the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing photographer Edgar Turner gives aviation fans a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at the making of one of the most anticipated planes of all time.(Credit:Ed Turner/Boeing)commentary It's been eight years in the making so far, and has gone through any number of delays and problems, but Boeing's 787 Dreamliner is still one of the most-anticipated commercial airplanes in history. And with the plane's testing program under way for almost exactly a year, it is edging closer and closer to carrying its first passengers. Now, fans of the innovative plane--it is made from 50 percent composite material and is expected to offer carriers up to 20 percent savings on fuel--can get a fix unlike any offered before. With Edgar Turner's new book, "The Birth of the 787 Dreamliner," anyone interested in the 787--or in commercial aviation in general--can get a great look at what it takes not only to make a major new airplane, but to get a program like the 787 off the ground to begin with.In his book, Turner--a Boeing photographer with terrific access to the entire program--uses his pictures to showcase the entire eight years of development of the 787. He traveled to Boeing facilities throughout the world, as well as to supplier partners, in order to illustrate as much of the process of building the Dreamliner as possible. Divided into sections on the plane's unusual components, its assembly, and "The Dream," or the program's current era, the book offers an education into major aviation development and manufacturing. To be sure, the timing of the book's release is less than ideal, given that the 787's test program is currently grounded due to a recent on-board control panel fire. But while the 787 has had more than its share of problems and delays--from manufacturing issues to strikes to supply shortages, and more--it is still expected to be carrying its first commercial passengers sometime in 2011. And there's no doubt that the book is a very large and prominent promotional effort for the new plane. The 787 made its first flight on December 15, 2009, from Boeing's Paine Field, in Everett, Wash.Stunning photographyWhen you pick up Turner's book, the first thing that strikes you is its heft. This is a big, heavy book, and it comes with a matching price--$85, though it's available on Boeing's site for $49. But when you open the cover, it's the photographs that will transfix you.I would challenge anyone, aviation buff or not, to not get lost in this book. Turner's pictures are stunning, and his access is unlike anything I've seen before. While Boeing makes countless images available on its Web site, it doesn't offer anything like what is in Turner's book--though a few of the same pictures appear in the official 787 imagery. But it's images like those, which offer detailed and intricate looks at just about every element of the airplane, that will keep anyone turning the pages--and turning them slowly. That, plus, pictures of things like the 787's painting process, the Dreamliner Production Integration Center--where Boeing keeps real-time track of the plane's worldwide supply chain--the first flight, the loading of parts of the plane's fuselage on the specially-made 747 Dreamlifter, and much, much more are what make the book worth its price.I wish I could show you more pictures. But it seems the publisher wants you to buy the book for that.

0 Vote(s)

Chrome gained 0.75 percentage points of global browser usage share in November.(Credit:Net Applications)November was a good month for Google's browser ambitions as Chrome won over a sizable new fraction of Web usage.Chrome usage rose from 8.5 percent of worldwide Web usage in October to 9.3 percent in November, according to statistics released today by Net Applications, whose analytics software monitors Web traffic extensively.Chrome claimed most of that share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which dropped in overall usage from 59.2 percent to 58.3 percent. Chrome's gains means Google has an easier time pursuing its agenda--adding new features for Web programmers, modifying Net communication protocols to make them faster, and generally trying to make the Internet a place where people spend more of their lives.Third-placeFirefox was essentially flat yet again at 22.8 percent, whileSafari crept upward from 5.4 percent to 5.6 percent and Opera slipped from 2.3 percent to 2.2 percent.Microsoft, though has plenty of silver lining: its ancient Internet Explorer 6 is gradually fading from use, and the newerIE8 grew in usage from October to November nearly as much as Chrome overall did. (IE9, a more radical upgrade, remains in beta testing.)"One of our main missions here on the IE team at Microsoft is to get people off of IE6 and onto a later version of IE as fast as humanly possible," Roger Capriotti, director of Internet Explorer product marketing, said in the blog post. "In the last six months, IE6 usage is now declining faster among enterprises than it is among worldwide consumers. We believe this reflects how organizations are recognizing the need to migrate to a modern browser."Corporations' software changes can be gated by conservative administrators, upgrade expenses, and dependence on a particular browser. Thus their lingering usage of IE6 has been a particular challenge for Microsoft and developers eager not to spend long hours trying to craft modern Web sites for the old browser.Net Applications said China remains a major holdout for IE6, where 45.2 percent of people use it. That compares with 14.6 percent worldwide. Microsoft is happy to point to signs of IE6&39's fading usage.(Credit:Microsoft)

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&39's Kinect: A million sold.(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)The million mark is a big milestone in sales, and today Microsoft announced that its Kinect system has joined the list of products to get there in short order. The $150 motion control camera accessory for Microsoft'sXbox 360 landed on shelves in North America 10 days ago and in Europe just last week, and, according to Redmond, it has just hit that magic million number. Microsoft says that puts it well on track toward reaching the company's estimated 5 million units by the end of the year. One thing Microsoft is not saying is how the million unit numbers are broken down. Currently, the Kinect sensor is available in three variations: just the sensor with a pack-in game, and included as part of a 4GB or 250GB Xbox 360 console bundle.Citing retailer reports last week, Dennis Durkin, corporate vice president and chief operating and financial officer of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, said that the units were being sold just as fast as Microsoft could get them manufactured. Kinect, which formerly went by the moniker Project Natal, made its debut at 2009's E3 in Los Angeles. Its big differentiator from competing motion control systems on Sony and Nintendo's game consoles is that it does not require the use of a controller. Instead, it uses multiple cameras and microphones to track motion and user voices, which can be used to control games and low-level system functions.Kinect is slated to hit two more markets later this week, including Asia on November 18, and in Japan on November 20.

0 Vote(s)

Uh-oh, Nissan. There&'s been word a-brewing on car forums for that the carmaker is experiencing delays in delivering the much-anticipated all-electric Leaf, which is slated to start arriving next month. But only five Leafs will arrive in the U.S. next month &8212' one for each of the five states the Leaf is initially launching in, according to Ray Ishak, fleet sales manager at the Campbell Nelson Nissan dealership in Seattle. VentureBeat first reported in September that the initial rollout would be just 200 cars &8212' a small delivery to begin with, especially considering that only five states will see the Leaf in the initial launch.&''Nissan is saying there will only be one car per state for December delivery so they can just keep face and (live up to) their original statement of December delivery,&'' Ishak said.It appears that Nissan has recently changed promiseddelivery dates, making dealers nervous. First, it pushed back the delivery of demo cars until at least March, Ishak said &8212' initially, one &''demo&'' Leaf was promised to each dealer by December, to be used for test drives. Nissan also recently balked at a request to deliver 25 Leafs to the city of Seattle by May 1, telling Ishak the best it could do would be five cars by the city&'s hoped-for delivery date. Cars that were initially scheduled for December delivery were pushed back to January, and Ishak says he currently doesn&'t see any cars in queue for December production.&''If you want &8230' your customers to get car a sooner [rather] than later, don&'t order silver,&'' Ishak recalled the Leaf&'s operations manager advising Nissan dealers. Evidently there&'s a big backlog on that color.Nissan spokeswoman Katherine Zachary declined to give numbers on December deliveries. However, she told us in an email: &''The reports regarding December deliveries to consumers are speculative. In order to prioritize our first consumers, we have shifted back the delivery of our dealer demos. Consumers in all of our launch markets instead are getting the opportunity to test drive the Nissan LEAF on the Drive Electric Tour.&''The changes have been enough to worry dealers and hopeful buyers alike, some of whom vent on the popular Nissan-Leaf.net forum. Ishakand others have suggested that the carmaker may be intentionally scaling back supply, perhaps because the Leaf will sell for a higher price in Japan ($45,000 compared to about $33,000 in the U.S.), or to take advantage of favorable exchange rates.Given what looks to be a molasses-slow trickle of Leafs coming out in the next few months, it&'s unclear how Nissan will make good on the 20,000 reservations it has for the Leaf. The further tightening in Leaf availability is raising questions about whether all of those cars will hit driveways within 2011. Ishak estimates that wannabe Leaf owners who didn&'t get in on the now-closed reservations will likely have to wait until 2012 to get a car.On this, Zachary responded: &''We never have announced projected volume for 2011. We have said there are 20,000 reservations in the United States right now, but not all of those reservations will convert to orders. However, we&'ll be reopening reservations in 2011, so there will be more coming into the pipeline at the same time.&''Between Nissan&'s reported delivery troubles and electric-vehicle maker Coda losing its CEO earlier this month, it seems that, of the soon-to-launch electric car makers, only GM is seeing any good press. The maker of the range-extending Chevy Volt just secured an order for 12,000 electric cars over the next five years in a massive fleet order from GE.Ishak says he&'s not worried that disappointed Leaf buyers will migrate instead to the Volt, but he allows that limited supplies could push some buyers over to startup and IPO hopeful Coda, which is to release its all-electric sedan in 2011. Pike Research analyst John Gartner echoed the potential for startups like Coda rising to meet &''overflow demand&'' from the Leaf in an earlier interview with VentureBeat:&''Codaa4a4s advantage at this point is that ita4a4s probably a supply-constrained market. Therea4a4s a lot of interest in electric vehicles that outstrip the available supply for the next 18 to 24 months,&'' Gartner said.Next Story: With 320M users, Zynga chief sees a &''dog activated&'' world of gamers Previous Story: Microsoft sells 1 million Kinect motion controllers in 10 daysPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Coda sedan, electric cars, electric vehicles, Leaf, VoltCompanies: Chevrolet, GE, GM, NissanPeople: Katherine Zachary, Ray Ishak Tags: Coda sedan, electric cars, electric vehicles, Leaf, VoltCompanies: Chevrolet, GE, GM, NissanPeople: Katherine Zachary, Ray IshakIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
As with many cellphone manufacturers trying to figure out how to make the leap into superphones, LGa4a4s bet on Google&'s Android operating system is turning out to be a wise decision. The company announced today that its budget-minded Optimus One is its fastest-selling phone ever, hitting 1 million units sold worldwide in 40 days. The Optimus One is currently available in the US as the Optimus T on T-Mobile for $29.99 (after a mail-in rebate and two-year contract), and the Optimus S on Sprint for $49.99 (with contract). Ita4a4s heading to Verizon soon as the a4AVortexa4. The phone certainly isna4a4t a powerhouse &8212' it has a smaller screen and slower CPU than typical Android smartphones. But ita4a4s running the recent Android 2.2 release, which many Android owners are still waiting for, and reviewers have generally been very kind to the phone. Not that it needed much confirmation, but LGa4a4s success with the Optimus is a clear sign of how Android will eventually become the dominant mobile platform. Since ita4a4s free, manufacturers can easily implement on both high and low-end phones, which means that it will definitely pose a threat to Nokiaa4a4s dominance among cheap a4Adumbphones.a4While LG is seeing success with the Optimus One, it also hasna4a4t given up on the high-end Android market, where it has yet to make a major impact. The company is apparently working on a super powerful Android phone that will be the first to pack in a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, and it can also record 1080p high-definition video, Engadget reports. The phone, which is being called the a4AStara4 internally, doesna4a4t look like much design-wise. But ita4a4s clearly worth paying attention to, if only because LG managed to deliver high-end specs like this in a phone before the likes of HTC or Motorola.Next Story: Can Coda steal sales from the backlogged Nissan Leaf Previous Story: Layar lands another $14M to turn augmented reality into a discovery toolPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, dumbphones, Optimus One, smartphones, TegraCompanies: Google, Lg, Nvidia Tags: Android, dumbphones, Optimus One, smartphones, TegraCompanies: Google, Lg, NvidiaDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Biofuels company Gevo raised $107 million in an initial public offering yesterday, pricing 7.1 million shares at $15 each. The company, backed by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla and Virgin&'s Richard Branson, sold the shares at the high end of its range of $13 to $15. Biofuels companies Amyris and Codexis IPO&'d last year, but at the low ends of their ranges. Gevo originally filed last summer for a $150 million IPO but scaled down its intentions in a filing last month to $100 million.Gevo&'s successful IPO is good news for biofuels and marks an earlycleantech IPO for 2011, which venture capitalists like Alan Salzman and Nat Goldhaber have speculated will be a good year for public offerings in the sector. It also highlights some new trends in biofuels &8212' that is, investors are becoming interested in non-ethanol investments.Like many biofuels companies lately, Gevo&'s business plan isn&'t contingent on producing biofuels immediately &8212' it focuses first on producing isobutanol, an alcohol compound that can be used as an ethanol substitute. (Other companies, like LS9, have looked tomaking bio-chemicals to broaden their revenue streams.)Though Gevo has never turned a profit, it has secured letters of interest from Total, United Airlines and others interested in buying its chemicals and fuels.&''They have a lot of things going for them. They have a capital-light business model to retrofit ethanol (facilities). They have strong partnerships, which was the real reason we thought they might have a successful IPO,&'' said Andrew Soare, analyst for Lux Research.&''The next couple of years are going to be make or break for Gevo,&'' he added, saying the company has to show it can successfully pull off the retrofits and produce isobutanol at competitive prices. While ethanol has started to sour among investors, Khosla is one of a few who has multiple plays in the running. He backed Amyris, which IPO&'d last year, and he backs LanzaTech, Coskata, Mascoma, Range Fuels (which recently closed a plant), LS9 and Kior.Gevo, in fact, wants to retrofit ethanol facilities to produce isobutanol, with commercial production starting in 2012. Its SEC filingplaced heavy emphasis on isobutanola4a4s potential as a building block in materials such as rubber, lubricants and polyester. Isobutanol can be used as a fuel in existing gas tanks, as a fuel blend with gasoline like ethanol, or as a component in plastics and other polymers.[Image via Flickr/xcbiker]Next Story: Dell dumps its Macbook Air competitor Adamo Previous Story: Why we break up&8230' with a brandPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: biochemicals, biofuels, ethanolCompanies: Amyris, Codexis, Gevo, Ls9, Total, United AirlinesPeople: Andrew Soare, Richard Branson, Vinod Khosla Tags: biochemicals, biofuels, ethanolCompanies: Amyris, Codexis, Gevo, Ls9, Total, United AirlinesPeople: Andrew Soare, Richard Branson, Vinod KhoslaIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
