Taking a virtual tour of Broadway courtesy of Bing&39's revamped Streetside View.(Credit:Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET)Trying to find a specific location using Bing Streetside View is potentially a bit easier now, thanks to a few new tweaks from Microsoft.Using your mouse to drag across the screen, you can now pan up and down different streets to track down specific sites and locations. As you virtually stroll along each street, Bing quickly updates the street-level photo view, showing you a seamless perspective of your tour of the neighborhood. You can drag your mouse left or right to travel along your current street. Making a right or left at an intersection is just a matter of clicking on the link for the new street you want to investigate. You can even click on a U-turn icon to go back the other way.You can also easily keep track of where you are in the context of the city or neighborhood. Above the street-level panoramic view is a bird's-eye view map showing you the name of each street as you walk along. The new navigation is a major improvement over Streetside's old interface, in which you had to click on different panoramas or "bubbles" to travel down a street. The latest enhancements to Streetside are based on work done at Microsoft Research designed to make panoramic navigation quicker and easier.Beyond offering the panoramic views of streets and city blocks, Bing also displays the names of businesses, restaurants, and other types of stores as you reach their locations. For example, clicking on the name of a retail store brings up a page with its address and other details. But clicking on the name of a restaurant displays not just its address but also a link to its menu and any user comments or reviews. You can access Streetside View for any supported location directly from Bing Maps. From the standard Bing Maps page, type in the address or location you wish to see. Then click the icon at the top that looks like a person standing on a circle. Your mouse pointer will latch onto a figure of a little blue person, while the streets and regions capable of displaying in Streetside View will themselves light up in blue. Simply drop the little blue person on the area you wish to navigate, and the view will automatically change to Streetside.

0 Vote(s)

Ashampoo, a German maker of Windows utilities and security software, warned this week that customer names and e-mail addresses were stolen and could be used in targeted malware attacks. "Hackers gained access to one of our servers. We discovered the break-in and interrupted it instantly," Ashampoo Chief Executive Rolf Hilchner wrote in a message on the company Web site earlier this week. Billing information, including credit card and bank account numbers, was not affected, he said, adding that German law enforcement is investigating but "unfortunately, the traces of the well-concealed hackers currently disperse abroad." Attackers often send e-mails with malware-laden attachments to e-mail addresses found in the databases they breach, pretending to be a confirmation of an order from the company, Hilchner said. The company did not disclose how many customers were affected. People should be cautious about opening unsolicited or unexpected e-mails, even from companies they know, and keep antivirus software up to date, he said. The news comes two weeks after dozens of big companies in the United States, including Citibank, Chase, Capital One, Walgreens, Target, Best Buy, and Verizon, warned customers about the potential for targeted phishing attacks in the wake of a data breach at e-mail marketing service provider Epsilon.

0 Vote(s)

The old machine&39's image (left) and a modern machine&39's image (right).(Credit:RSNA/Radiology)We're still not at the place where we can have real-time X-ray video like in "Total Recall," but that doesn't mean X-ray technology hasn't come a long way in the last 116 years. To underline that point, researchers in the town of Maastricht in Holland have fired up an X-ray machine from 1895 and compared it with a modern machine. As you can see in the photos to the right, things have gotten sharper. The original device was built by a local educator and doctor just weeks after the first "how to" on X-ray machines was published. It was found in a warehouse and then dusted off by researchers from Maastricht University Medical Center who wanted to show it off. The old machine was originally produced and built in the Dutch town, and the team didn't just turn it on, they replicated as closely as possible the conditions that would have been available and used by doctors of that time. But it's not just the better-looking images that make modern X-ray machines better, according to the BBC, but also the fact that they use 1,500 times less radiation, making them safer and cheaper. The machine wasn't just fired up for fun, but for science, by doctors who chronicle their findings in the journal Radiology.Still, that doesn't mean that we can look down at the venerable old Dutch machine. If you hadn't been told that the image on the left came from a Victorian-era machine, would you have been able to tell Probably not.

0 Vote(s)

Artist&39's concept of a future supersonic cruise vehicle designed to have low-level sonic booms. (Credit:Frassanito &amp' Associates)Sonic booms aren't just cheesy ranged weapons that Guile from Street Fighter uses to defend his epic flat-top. They're the result of an aircraft breaking the sound barrier. And they can be loud enough to deafen E. Honda. The nerve-rattling noise factor has restricted much supersonic travel to the world's oceans, limiting intercontinental flight to sub-Mach speeds. But a series of experiments being conducted by NASA are aimed at enabling a new generation of supersonic crafts that can dampen or even eliminate sonic booms.You&39'll poke your eye out, kid.(Credit:NASA photo by Tom Tschida)NASA aerospace engineer Ed Haering today answered reader questions about "what it's like to try to tame a sonic boom," and included images of an F-15B prototype (left) modified with the awesome-looking Unicorn-like "Quiet Spike." The retractable, 24-foot-long spike is mounted to the nose of the aircraft and creates three smaller shockwaves that travel all the way to the ground in parallel instead of building up to a sonic boom. That configuration greatly reduces noise when the aircraft goes Mach 1, or about 760 mph, the speed of sound at sea level. In its bid to tame the sonic boom, NASA has performed ground experiments with names like "SonicBOBS," "SonicBREWS," "LaNCETS," "House VIBES," and even "Low Boom/No Boom." They sound like Dubstep bands, but they entail serious research being done by serious scientists. The Quiet Spike, along with some of the other projects, are proving that aircraft can indeed "mold" soundwaves when breaking the sound barrier. If the experiments are successful, a new generation of supersonic planes could be crisscrossing the country, allowing flights in a fraction of the time they take now. Frequent travelers will welcome the news, if not the fun. Who doesn't want to go supersonic

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET)Now that the electric Nissan Leaf has gotten an official fuel economy rating, all eyes are on the Chevy Volt, the other high-profile electric vehicle soon coming to market. Although there's no definitive rating just yet, Chevy Volt drivers will experience a wide range of mileage regardless of what's on the sticker. The Environmental Protection Agency is using "miles-per-gallon equivalent" (MPGe) as it top-line metric when evaluating battery-powered cars in order to help consumers make comparisons among gas, diesel, all-electric, and hybrid options. (Credit:EPA via CNN)In the case of the Nissan Leaf, which will be available for sale in certain states next month, that translates to an aggregate 99 MPGe between city and highway driving. The Leaf is also rated "best" for fuel economy and "best" for the environment in the midsize vehicle category. The Chevy Volt is moved by an electric motor, too, but the power system is a hybrid that uses both a battery and a gasoline engine. It can run between 25 and 50 miles on the 16-kilowatt-hour battery and then a gasoline engine kicks in to run a generator that charges the battery. So in theory, a driver who stays within the electric driving range of the Volt can get the same fuel economy rating as the Leaf which, according to the EPA's methodology, is about 100 miles per gallon. But once the gas engine kicks in, thecar is in "charge sustaining" mode and the miles per gallon will drop to the mid to high 30s, according to GM.The EPA is likely to include an electric vehicle range with the Volt and an MPGe number that combines all-electric drive and the miles per gallon in charge-sustaining mode, according to GM spokesman Rob Peterson. He said GM is like "an expecting grandparent," waiting to hear the word on the Volt's fuel economy rating before it goes on sale next month."It's a fairly complex situation, a complex car, and a complex process by which the EPA is trying to determine mileage," he said. "Charge-sustaining fuel economy is the worst-case scenario because you're making the assumption that the car never charges or your miles per gallon is what you get after the battery depleted."Early drivers of the Volt have experienced that range of mileage. Motor Trend found that without plugging in, the Volt gets mileage in the high 30s to low 40s. But when a driver is able to draw mostly from the battery, the mileage changes dramatically for the better. Lyle Dennis, who runs the GM-Volt.com Web site and is an early driver, has been able to charge twice a day and drive almost entirely on the battery, giving him a fuel economy equivalent of 168 miles per gallon equivalent on occasion. The Volt is designed to tap its internal combustion engine once in a while so that the gasoline and oil don't get stale. About once every 30 days, the car will automatically turn on the engine and cycle through the stored gas, said Peterson. The ratings for the Volt and the Leaf highlight the difficulty of comparing gasoline-powered cars as new auto technologies are introduced. The EPA, which is in the process of developing new fuel economy labels, uses 33 kilowatt-hours as the equivalent of the energy in one gallon of gasoline to come up with the MPGe. It includes the pollution created by generating electricity to come up with its overall grading on the "best to worst" scale for environment. But some electric-car enthusiasts argue that fuel economy for electric vehicles should be expressed only using kilowatt-hours, the same unit for energy used on electric bills. So instead of miles per gallon, it would be how many kilowatt-hours are used to go 100 miles, for example. Another suggestion has been cost per mile. The sticker for the Leaf does indeed include a kilowatt-hour-per-100-mile rating at 34 and an estimated charge time. The Volt, which needs the EPA label before the car goes on sale next month, is expected to use the same format. The electric-car all-stars come out (photos)

0 Vote(s)

At long last, iPhone and iPad owners will be able to enjoy the incredibly clever Lego video games, starting with Harry Potter: Years 1-4.(Credit:Traveller&39's Tales Games)Traveller's Tales' Lego video games (including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman) are among the wittiest and most entertaining I've ever played. My kids love 'em, too. Alas, though they've made appearances on all the major consoles as well as handheld systems like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, not one of the games has been ported to iOS. Until now.According to a PR rep for Warner Bros. and TT Games, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 will be arriving "soon" foriPhone,iPad, andiPod Touch. Just how soon, the rep wouldn't say, but given that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is due in theaters November 19, it's a safe bet the game will arrive no later--and perhaps even a bit sooner. Here's the only description I was given: Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 will bring the world of Lego Harry Potter to life on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, giving gamers the power to play with Lego characters and models in a brand-new way. Based on the first four "Harry Potter" books and movies, Lego Harry Potter builds on the foundations of previous Lego video games by offering a mix of fun, accessible gameplay, and light-hearted humor, which appeals to all ages. Players will explore and feel as though they are at Hogwarts. Will the iOS version contain all the levels of its console counterpart Will it allow cooperative play What will the controls be like How much will it cost Alas, I can't answer any of these questions yet. But rest assured I'll post a full review as soon as possible. Suffice it to say, I'm seriously excited by Lego HP's arrival, and hope the other Lego games will follow. In the meantime, I leave you with a couple more tantalizing screenshots: (Credit:Traveller&39's Tales Games) (Credit:Traveller&39's Tales Games)

0 Vote(s)

The future of biofuels is becoming less about biofuels and more about soap.In particular, it&'s in the chemicals and food additives that go into items like soap, rubber, plastics and protein bars. As investor appetite for ethanol startups has soured, biofuels companies are leveraging their technologies to pursue opportunities in chemicals and food. Why chemicals and not biofuels For one, biofuels have proven to be expensive and difficult to scale. While biochemicals &8212' chemicals made from renewable sources &8212' aren&'t necessarily cheaper to produce, they can sell for a lot more money.&''Fuels are basically cheaper than water,&'' says Mark Bunger, analyst for Lux Research. Commonly used chemicals like polyethelene and polyvinyl chloride, widely used to create plastics, can be sold at a higher price than ethanol. So biochemical makers could potentially make more money and have higher margins.Biochemicals are also more in demand now that some of the raw materials for traditionally made chemicals are difficult to get or increasingly expensive, Bunger says. Think of petroleum-derived plastics and rubber, or vanilla, which requires the tending and refining of a crop.Biofuels startups have moved to make chemicals and food additives part of their business. Solazyme has a joint venture with food ingredient company Roquette and is working to develop renewable oils to for soaps made by Unilever. LS9 has a chemicals partnership with consumer goods titan Procter &amp' Gamble.Gevo, which made a $107 million initial public offering yesterday, is working on producing bio-based isobutanol, an alcohol compound used in rubber and lubricants. Last year, algal biofuels startup Aurora changed its name from Aurora Biofuels to Aurora Algae to reflect a new approach that focused on making food and pharmaceutical ingredients.Lux Research foresees that biomaterials production will grow faster than biofuels, with 17.7 percent growth each year, driven by big corporations. The company estimated the global bio-based chemicals market to be worth $11.7 billion last year, up7 percent from 2009. The company expects the market to grow another 7 percent this year to reach $12.6 billion. The Cleantech Group last year noted a rise in venture capital funding deals for biofuels firms that also made biochemicals.Other companies are focusing on biochemicals from the start. Synthetic Genomics works with Exxon in a chemicals and biofuels alliance centering on algae technology (Exxon mentioned the company in a recent commercial featuring algal biofuels). Genomatica is another startup in this space, and today it announced a deal with major waste services company Waste Management in which it will research chemicals that can be created from synthetic gas, or &''syngas&'', captured at landfills.&''The plastic in your cell phone to the paint on the wall, fibers in carpets &8212' all of this stuff comes from the chemicals industry. All of these materials, about 95-plus percent of them (are derived) from oil and gas,&'' said Genomatica CEO Christophe Schilling. &''We&'re looking to make the same exact chemicals but from renewable feedstocks.&''It&'s not just the startups, either. Major petrochemical companies like DuPont, BASF, DSM and Dow have been broadening their reach because there&'s more competition in their core businesses and because of the supply strain on raw materials. DuPont recentlypaid $6.3 billion for Danisco, with which it has a biofuels agreement. Danisco itself makes food ingredients and industrial enzymes using bio-based processes. And DSM recentlypaid $1.1 billion for Martek, a food company that specializes in microalgae and fermentation. And that&'s why the future of biofuels is in your food and soap.Next Story: Can Cisco be a consumer tech company Previous Story: Is cloud gaming service OnLive really worth $1.8B (poll)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: algae fuel, algal oil, biochemicals, biofuels, chemicals, oil petroleum, petrochemicals Tags: algae fuel, algal oil, biochemicals, biofuels, chemicals, oil petroleum, petrochemicalsIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer. But that&'s not enough. The Helsinki-based company wants to make it easier to pay for its mobile apps. So it is launching a new mobile payment system that is in keeping with the theme of Angry Birds, where birds slingshot themselves at green pigs who have stolen the birds&' eggs. The Bad Piggy Bank is a system for billing that provides consumers with an easy way to pay for Angry Birds and other mobile games.Rovio is making the announcement with Elisa, the largest network operator in Finland, on the one-year anniversary of the launch of Angry Birds on the iPhone. The payment system lets you pay for a mobile app with one finger tap on a touch screen.Rovio says it has to get its hit game on all major smartphone platforms. But not all of those have easy or compatible payment mechanisms. By launching Bad Piggy Bank, Rovio will make it easier to pay, since no registration or credit card purchase is necessary. All purchases are simply billed to a consumer&'s monthly mobile bill. With this system, it will be easier for developers to use in-app purchases, where a consumer buys something from inside a game.a4AAngry Birds has become the benchmark in casual mobile gaming, and a huge part of the whole game experience is convenience,a4 said Mikael Hed, chief executive.Rovio will launch an update of Angry Birds on Android. With that, Elisa and Saunalahti customers in Finland will have the chance to buy the app and remove advertising. Right now, only the free ad-supported version of Angry Birds is available on Android. Bad Piggy Bank will be rolled out with carriers worldwide early next year.
MooBella, the developer of a technology that can make hard-scoop ice cream in just 40 seconds, has raised $9 million from Inventages Venture Capital.MooBella does far more than the average vending machine. Consumers can make up to 96 varieties of ice cream in just three steps. Using a touch screen, customers first choose between premium and low-fat ice cream, followed by a choice of 12 flavors like coffee and cake batter and three mix-ins including chocolate chips. The machine, which is about as large as a household refrigerator, then delivers a freshly made scoop of ice cream.Based in Massachusetts, MooBella currently has 45 machines installed throughout New England, including at Massachusetts&' Logan International Airport and New Hampshire&'s Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The company plans to use the latest funding to expand to more colleges, museums and restaurants in the Northeast.MooBella previously raised $25 million in 2007 and $18 million in 2009, both from Inventages. The Switzerland-based firm focuses on industries in the life sciences, including food innovation.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: Suntech buying $127 million of capacity in China, Infigen weighs $492 million wind investment Previous Story: Foursquare kicks off new brand loyalty program with Safeway and PepsiCoPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Companies: Inventages Venture Capital, MooBella Companies: Inventages Venture Capital, MooBellaVentureBeat has new weekly email newsletters.
The Geological Society Of America (also known as the Geosociety) completed the installation of a solar power generating rooftop at their Boulder, Colorado headquarters yesterday. The project was funded by Xcel Energy and the City of Boulder, and installed by Bella Energy. Good thing they bought into renewables already. The price of solar photovoltaic panels could rise steeply if the Geosociety&'s predictions about mineral trade wars come true. The group of 17 minerals in the rare earth category go into everything from missile guidance systems and mobile phones, to flat screen TVs, lasers and new energy technology. Pending scarcitya4" driven by increases in global demand, and China&'s near-monopoly on the minerals marketa4" could lead to prices that eat into industry margins, slow down clean tech projects worldwide, and to diplomatic clashes between supplier nations (China) and buyer nations (U.S., Germany and Japan).Rare earth minerals are essential to build photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, fuel cells and vehicle batteries. As widely reported, including by the Geosociety, BBC and the New York Times, some 97% of the global supply of rare earth minerals now comes from China. Canada, Australia and the U.S. used to have more global market share, and rare earth minerals mines but the relative value of the currency, and relaxed-to-poor environmental regulation of mines in China made sourcing there favorable for buyers.A trade war is imminent, James Burnell of the Colorado Geological Survey explained in the Geosociety report: &''China is preparing to build 330 giga-watts worth of wind generators. That will require about 59,000 tons of neodymium to make high-strength magnets a4" more than that country&'s annual output of neodymium. China supplies the world with a lot of those rare earth elements, like neodymium, and will have little or none to export if it moves ahead with its wind power plans&8230'So the source for the West is problematical.&''Earlier this month, during the East Asia Summit, Chinese officials told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that Beijing aims to be a reliable minerals supplier and would not impose bans on exports of industrial minerals for political purposes. Sec. Clinton reportedly expressed gratitude, but requested further details on China&'s export policies and new assurances. Today, Reuters reported, 35 global business and trade associationsa4" including the Consumer Electronics Association and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and other major consumers of rare earth mineralsa4" called on the Group of 20 (G-20) summit of the world&'s 20 largest economies to address scarcity and trade war concerns at their forthcoming meeting, Nov. 11-12 in Seoul. Officials from Japan and Germany have already complained that their automotive, and clean tech industries have been adversely impacted by China&'s tightening of mineral exports. China has denied the implications of market manipulation and political motivations to reign in mineral exports. The country&'s officials said China was trying to control some of the negative environmental impacts of mining, instead.
