The new Nook&39's hidden browser is far from fully baked, but it shows potential. (Credit:David Carnoy/CNET)When Barnes & Noble launched its new Nook e-reader a couple of weeks ago, we asked why it didn't include such features as a built-in Web browser or an e-mail app. After all, it is anAndroid-based device, so we assumed it could do a bit more if those Nook software engineers in Palo Alto, Calif., were directed to add new features.Well, it turns out the new Nook, dubbed the Simple Touch Reader, sort of does have a built-in Web browser. Nathan over at The eBook Reader put together the video below to show off its capabilities.Alas, it didn't work quite well for me as it did for him (I couldn't get most URLs to load, though I did get Twitter working). But if you have a new Nook, and want to give it a shot, just press the virtual "Search" button at the bottom of your Nook's screen and key a URL into the search bar when it comes up. Hopefully, Barnes & Noble will refrain from removing the browser in an update and choose instead to make it more functional because the touch-screen navigation actually improves the Web-browsing experience significantly on e-ink e-readers. Both the Kindle and first-edition Nook have browsers, and though they don't work particularly well, they work OK with certain sites and are serviceable in a pinch. As we've seen with earlier e-readers from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, firmware upgrades have added additional features, and we assume that Barnes & Noble will remain flexible with those feature offerings as it awaits Amazon's next Kindle, which may arrive as soon as this fall. It also should be noted that Amazon is scheduled to add local library lending support for e-books as part of an upcoming Kindle update later this year. The Nook currently supports this feature.

0 Vote(s)

A pilot eSolar plant which uses sun-tracking mirrors to create heat to make steam which makes electricity through a conventional turbine.(Credit:eSolar)When it comes to power plants, General Electric sees natural gas as solar and wind energy's best friend.GE today said that it has licensed solar thermal technology from California-based eSolar for use in power plants that use both solar and natural gas. As part of the deal, GE has invested an undisclosed amount in eSolar.Under the agreement, GE will offer a power plant that incorporates eSolar technology with GE's natural-gas turbines designed specifically for operating with large-scale solar and wind installations. The FlexEfficiency combined cycle natural-gas plant is designed to ramp power generation up and down more quickly than conventional plants to work well with variable solar and wind.eSolar has designed a concentrating solar thermal power plant that uses thousands of computer-controlled, sun-tracking mirrors, or heliostats, that concentrate light onto a tower. The heat creates steam which is fed into a conventional steam turbine to generate electricity. GE said that a power plant that combines eSolar's solar thermal system with its FlexEfficiency 50 Combined Cycle Power Plant will have an overall efficiency of 70 percent, higher than modern efficient natural-gas turbines. The license also allows GE to build stand-alone solar power plants without natural-gas generation.GE&39's FlexEfficiency natural-gas power plant is designed with a turbine that fluctuates power generation rapidly to accommodate solar and wind.(Credit:GE)"The addition of eSolar's high temperature tower technology to our FlexEfficiency combined cycle power plant is an important step forward for our industry because it allows us to offer an (integrated solar combined cycle) power plant that creates more value for customers at a competitive cost," Paul Browning, president and CEO of thermal products for GE Energy, said in a statement. "As a part of this transaction, GE is becoming an investor in the technology as well as the primary channel to the power industry [through] the license arrangement."Concentrating solar power systems operate best in desert areas with the right sunlight. GE said it expects to offer the combined solar/natural-gas power plants with investor and developer MetCap Energy in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S. For eSolar, adding GE as a distribution partner gives more marketing muscle in sales to utilities and power plant generators. The company built a small-scale power plant in Southern California and has technology license deals with other energy project developers.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)Match.com will start checking its members against a national sex offenders registry. The company expects to start the new policy in 60 to 90 days, Match.com told CNET this morning, and confirmed that the policy will both affect both new and existing members.Match.com has been considering the option for a while, but yesterday's decision was hastened as a result of the attention brought on by a lawsuit filed last week, spokesman Matthew Traub told the Associated Press yesterday.A woman in California has sued Match.com, claiming she was sexually assaulted by a man that she met through the online dating service. Arguing that the woman had no idea her date had been convicted of sexual battery, the suit is seeking an injunction to stop anyone from joining Match.com until the company sets up a process to screen for convicted sex offenders.Match.com president Mandy Ginsberg told the AP that the company had been hesitant to implement such screenings due to their "historical unreliability." But discussions with advisers over the past few days convinced Match.com that certain improvements have made sex offender registries more accurate, prompting the dating service to reverse its stance. To conduct its screening, the company will tap into a national registry of sex offenders set up by the federal government. This registry pulls together information from the 50 states and other U.S. territories and lets users search for sex offenders by name as well as location.Since the registry relies on coordinating data from a variety of different local sources, Match.com is cautioning that these types of checks can still be highly flawed."It is critical that this effort does not provide a false sense of security to our members," Match.com said in a statement sent to CNET. "With millions of members, and thousands of first dates a week, Match.com, like any other large community, cannot guarantee the actions of all its members. Match.com is a fantastic service, having changed the lives of millions of people through the relationships and marriages it has given rise to, but people have to exercise common sense and prudence with people they have just met, whether through an online dating service or any other means." Match.com advises its members to read and follow the safety tips that it posts on its Web site to better protect themselves both online and offline.Update at 11:10 a.m. PT:Added statement and information from Match.com.

0 Vote(s)

Android has strengthened its leading position as the most popular smartphone platform on Millennial Media's mobile ad network, according to the company's January Mobile Mix report. For January, Google's mobile OS captured 54 percent of all ad impressions seen on smartphone platforms on the network, up from 46 percent in December. At the same time, the share of impressions held by Apple's iOS fell to 28 percent from 32 percent the prior month. In third place was Research In Motion's BlackBerry with a 14 percent share, followed by Nokia's Symbian and Microsoft's Windows Mobile, each of which picked up 1 percent of all ad impressions.(Credit:Millennial Media)Android may be the leading smartphone OS, according to the report. But switching gears to look at the device makers themselves, Apple held onto its top spot by a healthy margin. For January, the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad collectively grabbed 26 percent of all ad impressions, a jump of 24 percent from December. Of all connected devices tracked on Millennial Media's network, theiPhone retained its No. 1 position but was followed by theiPod Touch, which sneaked into second place last month with an 8 percent share.Among other device makers, HTC's share of ad impressions grew 36 percent in January to propel it to the No. 2 position among the top 15 manufacturers. All told, HTC won 21 percent of all impressions and accounted for eight of the devices in Millennial Media's top 30 list with its Nexus One smartphone taking third place.Fellow Android device maker Samsung dropped to the No. 3 spot, though its Epic and Galaxy 5 smartphones joined the top 30 list for the first time last month. Collectively, Samsung captured 15 percent of all ad impressions tracked by Millennial Media and saw seven of its devices scattered among the top 30.In fourth place was RIM with 10 percent of all ad impressions and five of its BlackBerry phones on the top 30 list. The top ten device makers seen on Millennial Media&39's ad network.(Credit:Millennial Media)The report for January also uncovered further evidence of the ongoing popularity of smartphones. For the month, smartphones accounted for 23 of the top 30 mobile devices to win a collective 55 percent share of all ad impressions, up 15 percent from December.Of course, the year is still young, and recent events promise to shake up the mobile market as 2011 progresses. Will the Verizon iPhone knock Android a few pegs off its perch And though Nokia and Microsoft were on the bottom of Millennial Mobile's ad network, will the new deal between the two companies at least giveWindows Phone 7 a much-needed shot in the arm

0 Vote(s)
