Nvidia's $1.5 billion settlement with Intel on Monday and its drive to become a leader in the smartphone andtablet market seems to be playing well with Wall Street. Can Nvidia, a relative upstart in mobile chips, maintain this momentum The company's stock jumped about 15 percent today and the share price has doubled in three months. So, the burning question is whether this makes the longstanding PC graphics chip supplier, a relative newcomer to the smartphone- and tablet-centric ARM chip market, a small-device leader The company's Tegra chips have been adopted by Motorola, for example, in high-end smartphones and the Xoom tablet. And LG is bringing out a 4-inch-class phone with the chip, too. "They definitely did a good job with designs this year coming out ofCES, seeing how many tablets are built around Tegra and high-profile smartphone wins," said Doug Freedman, analyst at Gleacher & Company, in a phone interview today. "The concern is how well those products are adopted by customers and consumers," he added. And Nvidia's plans don't stop at mobile chips. At CES, it made a splash announcing a project to build ARM chips that span from the desktop to supercomputers in conjunction with Microsoft's announcement to move its next release of Windows to ARM processors. "The fact that Windows is moving to ARM in 2012, 2013, and the fact that [Microsoft] Office is going to move to ARM, there's no doubt that opens up tremendous potential," said Freedman. But he has some concerns, too. "Is the market overly enthusiastic Are they [Nvidia] going to convert the market to PCs Are they going to sell ARM processors for $100 What's the business model" Freedman also pointed out that Nvidia is by no means alone. Large, experienced mobile-chip suppliers like Texas Instruments and Qualcomm stand as formidable rivals. Both of those companies' chips are used widely in smartphones today.

0 Vote(s)

The mobile check-in is not just a way to tell your friends where you are via FourSquare or Facebook Places, it is a marketing opportunity. Southwest Airlines is combining Facebook Places and charitable giving to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to encourage travelers to check into Southwest when they get to the airport. From now through Christmas, Southwest Airlines will make a $1 donation in the form of free travel credit to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Often these wishes involve travel, an Southwest will donate up to $300,000 in travel credit through this promotion. The promotion is a good example of cause marketing. It gives people an actual incentive to check in that is altruistic and makes them feel good. (Southwest is partnering with Microsoft to place photo-taking Santas at different airport terminals). Some of that good feeling might rub off on Southwest for making the connection, and it also has the added bonus of training people to use their mobile phones to check in at Southwest Airline locations. Next time they fly, they will probably check in again just to see what other geo-promotions Southwest is running. Companies are still trying to figure out how to take advantage of geo-promotions. Turning check-ins into matching donations is certainly more compelling than trying to get people to check into billboards.
Scrambling to flee those who would shut it down, whistle-blower site WikiLeaks has moved its domain to a Switzerland-based domain name host.New Hampshire-based EveryDNS.net (which should be renamed Almost EveryDNS.net) shut down its domain hosting for Wikileaks after it came under a massive cyber attack that also threatened to take down its 500,000 other web sites. That forced WikiLeaks to find a new host, the Swiss Pirate Party, and rename its web site WikiLeaks.ch, as WikiLeaks.org no longer works. A day earlier, Amazon booted WikiLeaks from its web hosting service because of concerns about how WikiLeaks displays &''stolen content.&''WikiLeaks has had quite a year. First, it unveiled thousands of classified documents about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Now it has released 251,000 diplomatic cables from U.S. diplomats around the world. The latest breach has brought a lot of political heat on WikiLeaks as well as a police hunt for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is wanted on a rape charge in Sweden, a charge he claims is no more than an attempt to damage his credibility. As we noted before, it will be interesting to watch if this organization can flee the governments and hackers who are pursuing it, particularly if it has to continue to maintain a public web site in order to share its leaked documents. To operate a web site, WikiLeaks needs a domain name system (DNS) host so that the internet can direct a user to a web site when the user types in the site&'s name. It also needs a web host to store its site and to serve pages as users request them. The Swiss Pirate Part is WikiLeaks&' new DNS provider. The entity is a political group formed two years ago to campaign for freedom of information and better tech policy. The move shows that, despite all of the controversy, WikiLeaks still has friends who can help it hide from the authorities and survive efforts to shut it down. It&'s not clear if WikiLeaks.ch will work in the face of more cyber attacks, as the site isn&'t up at the moment. Web hosting has now moved from Amazon to Sweden&'s Bahnhof.WikiLeaks&' next moves may be to publish secret documents from corporations such as BP and Bank of America.Assange is reportedly hiding in Britain. The New York Times has said he lives on the run, dyes his hair, and checks into hotels under false names. Government officials in France have made moves to ban WikiLeaks from using servers in France to host its site. The whole episode seems like a George Orwell story.
Benchmark Capital, a venture capital firm that belongs to a handful of elite Silicon Valley venture firms, has raised a fresh $425 million fund to invest in new companies. But fresh on the news, firstreported by PEHub, came the revelation that one of its star investors, Bob Kagle, is apparently stepping down. Kagle was the man who backed eBay, the online auction site that went public in late 1998. eBay was not only a grand slam investment success for Benchmark &8212' the firm owned 22 percent of the company, which went on to become worth billions &8212' but it marked the opening of the great Internet go-go days. Ita4a4s also what catapulted Benchmark &8212' at the time a new firm on the block &8212' to top-dog status with more mature firms such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp' Byers, Sequoia Capital and Accel Partners.Still, the departure should have little impact on the firma4a4s standing. Kagle has slowed down significantly, and the firm has been careful to recruit solid younger partners in recent years, including most recently Matt Cohler, who was the early adult supervisor at Facebook, and before him, Peter Fenton, who has scored a string of consistent hits in Wily, JBoss, Friendfeed and others. Cohler has backed Quora, the hot Q&amp'A site that is the hands-down favorite among Silicon Valleya4a4s insiders right now. Fenton, meanwhile, sits on the boards of Yelp and Twitter, two other hot companies where he has led investments. The firm excelled last year, scoring more than a dozen exits, including the IPO of OpenTable, the sale of Pure Digital to Cisco Systems for $590 million.Last year, despite the recovery, and the increase in exits elsewhere, Benchmarka4a4s bewildering pace slowed somewhat. But the new fund comes at a good time: Therea4a4s plenty of good buzz and optimism as we enter 2011, and the full treasure trove keeps Benchmark solidly in the top handful of venture firms by reputation.According to the SEC filing, another partner Alex Balkanski is joining Kagle in exiting this latest fund. Balkanski was a video expert and former chief executive of C-Cube Microsystems. While those two partners wona4a4t join Benchmark&'s seventh fund, theya4a4re expected to continue to operate by supporting companies backed in previous companies. We&'ve requested comment from Benchmark and its public relations firm, and will update if we hear back from them.Benchmark earlier raised $500 million for its sixth fund in 2008, right before the market cratered. The other notable trait about Benchmark is its relationship among partners. While other firms have partners who are claim seniority to newer, younger partners and thus enjoy a bigger percentage of the carry &8212' or profit &8212' from the firmsa4a4 investments, Benchmark prides itself on the lack of such a hierarchy.Next Story: Don&'t miss The Gamification Summit next Thursday Previous Story: Who turns down $6 billion Someone who&'s after $15 billionPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Companies: Benchmark CapitalPeople: Bob Kagle, Matt Cohler, Peter Fenton Companies: Benchmark CapitalPeople: Bob Kagle, Matt Cohler, Peter FentonMatt Marshall is editor and CEO of VentureBeat.
Here&'s the latest action we&'re following today on the GreenBeat:Nexterra Systems raises $15M for biomass power &8212' The Candian company raised the cash from ARC financial and Tandem Expansion Fund. It makes small-scale biomass gasification systems that generate renewable heat and power systems. The company&'s clients include the U.S. Department of Energy and Johnson Controls. It also has strategic relationships with GE and Johnson Controls. The cash will go towards market expansion.Johnson Controls buys EnergyConnect for $32 million &8212' Building energy efficiency company Johnson Controlswill buy smart grid company Energy Connect for$32.3 million. The transaction is expected to close in July. Energy Connect specializes in a demand response technology, which helps companie cut their peak-time energy use and save money. Utilities with demand response programs also offer financial incentives for participation.Better Place teams with Renault for electric car battery swaps &8211' Electric car infrastructure startup Better Place opened today a center in Europe with its partner Renault, which makes the Renault Fluence Z.E. (pictured), an electric sedan. Better Place is unusual among other startups in that it offers battery swap stations, which allow users to swap out a depleted electric car battery for a fully-charged one &8212' other companies like Ecotality and Coulomb offer charging stations. The Copenhagen, Denmark facility offers a subscription service with five fixed-price packages based on kilometers driven for Fluence Z.E. drivers. For 40,000 kilometers (about 25,000 miles) driven, an &''all you can drive&'' option costs 399 euros a month, or about $557 a month. Other options include $278 to $348 per month packages. The Fluence Z.E. with Better Place mobility packages are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2011.Suntech still sees brisk European business &8211' Despite cutbacks in government subsidies, solar panel manufacturer Suntech says it will sell half its production this year in Europe, Reuters reports. The company does forecast a global oversupply of solar panels this year, but sees it as a temporary situation. Half of its production last year also went to Europe, and Suntech expects that number to only drop slightly.Enphase expands to Europe &8212' The top solar microinverter company has expanded with its first European offices in France and Italy. The company has made more than20,000 installations and shipped 500,000 units of its solar system equipment in North America, and says its expansion is aimed at capturing a share of the global inverter market. Europe is the world&'s largest solar market, but there&'s been some concern lately about government subsidy cutbacks there. Enphase says France, Italy and the Benelux regionare gaining momentum in solar installations and are poised to rapidly adopt microinverters rather than the traditional larger, centralized inverter systems. Inverters convert energy generated by solar systems into usable energy for the grid, and microinverters &8212' a hot area lately &8212' accomplish the same thing, but more efficiently.Amprius raises $25 million for next generation batteries &8212' The company says the cash will go tocommercialize what it says will be the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, signing on major new investors likeGoogle CEO Eric Schmidt and venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield &amp' Byers.Amprius is looking to commercialize high energy, silicon-based materials to for batteries that it says will offer a a4Adramatic increasea4 in energy, range and runtime for consumer electronics and electric vehicles.Next Story: Now that&'s a rant: Brenda Brathwaite unloads on social game haters Previous Story: Sony touts its PlayStation Network, 70M and countingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: batteries, biomass, demand response, electric cars, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, inverters, microinverters, SolarCompanies: Amprius, Better Place, EnergyConnect, Enphase, Johnson Controls, Nexterra Systems, Renault, Suntech Tags: batteries, biomass, demand response, electric cars, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, inverters, microinverters, SolarCompanies: Amprius, Better Place, EnergyConnect, Enphase, Johnson Controls, Nexterra Systems, Renault, SuntechIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
